If you’re an SF SPCA client seeking prescription food or medication from the Mission Campus Hospital at 201 Alabama Street, there are several options: • Call our refill lines. For prescription food, dial (415) 522-3555 and for prescription medication, dial (415) 522-3554. Leave a message with the pet’s name, owner’s name, medication/food name, and quantity. We typically contact you via text and email, but if you prefer a phone call, please let us know. • Text the pet’s name, owner’s name, medication/food name, and quantity to (415) 554-3030. • Email our pharmacy the pet’s name, owner’s name, medication/food name, and quantity at [email protected]. • Order through our online partner pharmacy, RxPro. Visit the RxPro website to create an account and have the food or medication shipped directly to you. When you shop online with us, a portion of the sales will support the SF SPCA’s Financial Assistance Program and our shelter animals. How soon I can pick up my prescription? Most prescriptions requested for hospital pick-up will be ready within 72 hours. You will receive a text notification when your items are ready. In cases where there are no remaining medication refills or special circumstances, a doctor must approve the refill request, which might extend the wait time beyond 72 hours. I visited the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), how do I request and refill my pet’s medications? If your pet has only been seen at the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), located at 4527 Mission Street in the Excelsior District, there are three options for medication requests and refills: • Call the CVC prescription refill line at (415) 429-5410 and leave a message with the pet’s name, owner’s name, medication/food name, and quantity. We typically contact you via text and email, but if you prefer a phone call, please let us know. All medications must be picked up at the CVC, open Wed–Sat from 8am–6pm. • Text the pet’s name, the owner’s name, medication/food name, and quantity to (415) 554-3030. • Email the pet’s name, owner’s name, medication/food name, and quantity to [email protected]. Medications for pets only seen at the CVC cannot be filled at our Mission Hospital or through RxPro, our online pharmacy. Can I order prescription food or medication through another pharmacy? The SF SPCA Hospital does not directly authorize outside pharmacies. A written prescription for food or medication may be requested by calling us at (415) 522-3554, texting us at (415) 554-3030, or emailing us at [email protected]. Once it’s ready, you can pick up the prescription during our regular business hours or have the prescription mailed to you. We do not email prescriptions. How do I pick up food prescriptions? We accept food prescriptions from outside veterinarians. Bring your food prescription to the kiosk on the first floor of the hospital during regular business hours, 7 days a week, from 8am to 6pm. You can also call (415) 522-3555 (our food refill line) or text (415) 554-3030 to inquire about food availability. Medication prescriptions or refills from outside veterinarians cannot be filled. Contact us by calling (415) 522-3550, texting (415) 554-3030, or emailing [email protected] for assistance. Can non-SF SPCA clients pick up prescriptions prescribed by another veterinarian? Our onsite and online pharmacies are only for SF SPCA clients. If you have a written prescription from another veterinarian, check with human pharmacies or online veterinary pharmacies for medication availability. What are the requirements for a prescription? A valid Veterinarian-Client-Pet Relationship (VCPR) must exist for any pet to obtain prescriptions by law. An in-person examination with your pet by a veterinarian at this hospital must have occurred within the last 12 months to have a current VCPR. If your pet has been seen at a different veterinary hospital, please contact them for prescriptions. Still have questions? We accept food prescriptions from outside veterinarians. Bring your food prescription to the kiosk on the first floor of the hospital during regular business hours, 7 days a week, from 8am to 6pm. Our onsite and online pharmacies are only for SF SPCA clients. If you have a written prescription from another veterinarian, check with human pharmacies or online veterinary pharmacies for medication availability. What are the requirements for a prescription? A valid Veterinarian-Client-Pet Relationship (VCPR) must exist for any pet to obtain prescriptions by law. An in-person examination with your pet by a veterinarian at this hospital must have occurred within the last 12 months to have a current VCPR. Adoption FAQs Do I have to make an adoptions appointment? No. Our adoption center is walk-in only, so we operate on a first-come, first-served system. When you arrive, simply sign in at one of our self-service kiosks, and our team will walk you through the next steps. How long does it take to adopt a dog or cat? During our adoption process, we want to ensure that you have enough time to view as many animals as you’d like, get all your questions answered, and feel confident in your decision. The process takes about an hour, but can vary from person to person. We recommend visiting on a day when you’re not pressed for time. What dog breeds do you have? Our adoption center has large and small dogs and a team of adoption counselors ready to help you find your perfect match. Our dogs are typically mixes of popular dog breeds like Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls, and Terriers. Is every animal available for adoption listed on the website? Yes. We refresh our website every 15 minutes to ensure that it reflects all our available animals. When an animal is available for adoption, we add their profile to our website. As soon as an animal is adopted, we remove their profile. When you visit our adoption center, you may see animals that aren’t listed on the website. This means that they’re not yet ready for adoption because they may be receiving health checks or recovering from surgery. What does it mean if an animal is “free” or their adoption fees are waived? If you see that an animal is “free” or that their adoption fees have been waived, it means that our generous SF SPCA donors have sponsored their adoption. Sponsoring adoption fees help us get animals out of our shelter and into loving homes faster. Can I reserve an animal or place a hold on them? No, we do not reserve or place holds on animals. Your adoption is not complete until you submit your payment. Do you have any other animals besides cats or dogs? No. Although the SF SPCA rescued animals like pigs and horses when we were first founded in 1868, we currently only house cats and dogs. Can I just play with the animals? Although our animals are cute, you can only physically interact with them if considering adoption. Our animals get plenty of love from our staff and volunteers during the day, and we don’t want to stress them out by introducing them to too many strangers. Are the animals assessed and treated medically and behaviorally? Every animal on our adoption floor is medically and behaviorally assessed throughout their time at our shelter. Each animal is altered (spayed or neutered), microchipped, vaccinated, and given preventative flea, tick, and worm medications before they’re available for adoption. Check-in Instructions On the day of your pet’s surgery, please allow 45 to 60 minutes for the drop-off and registration process, which includes a veterinary exam for which you must be present. The veterinarian will review your pet’s medical history and address any questions or concerns you have about the spaying or neutering procedure. Please alert us if your pet has any medical conditions or if they are currently on any medication. Cats are admitted between 7:30am and 8am. Upon arriving at your cat's spay/neuter appointment, please confine them to a carrier or crate. Let us know if you need a carrier. Dogs are admitted between 8am and 8:30am. Dogs must be on a leash. Walk your dog in the morning prior to their appointment to encourage elimination. Pickup Information ​​​ Release time for all animals is 5pm. Please allow 30 to 45 minutes so that our staff can review important post-operative home care with you. We do not board cats or dogs at the spay/neuter clinic. Milo was suffering from a urinary blockage, a life-threatening condition that male cats are especially prone to. Without swift intervention, toxins can build rapidly, putting a cat’s life at risk. Within moments, Milo received emergency care. Our veterinarians relieved the blockage and worked closely with his family to send him home with a prescription diet designed to support urinary health, which is often an effective solution after a first episode. A setback requiring advanced intervention However, one week later, Milo was back at our hospital. The blockage had returned. After a thorough evaluation, Milo’s care team determined that he needed a perineal urethrostomy (PU) surgery, a complex procedure that reroutes the urethra to prevent future blockages. It’s a highly effective surgery with an excellent prognosis, but it’s also costly and typically performed at specialty hospitals. Milo’s family was faced with an impossible choice. They wanted to give him the care he needed, but they didn’t have the financial means to pursue the surgery elsewhere. Although PU surgery is often performed at specialty hospitals, our team has the surgical expertise to handle complex cases like Milo’s. That capability, combined with a deep commitment to access to care, meant his family didn’t have to choose between financial hardship and their cat’s life. Our veterinary teams partner closely with clients to understand their goals, values, and financial realities. Through this contextualized approach, treatment plans are tailored to each pet and family, ensuring that medical decisions are both compassionate and realistic. When cost becomes a barrier to lifesaving care, our donor-supported financial assistance program helps make treatment possible. Thanks to this service model and the generosity of supporters who make financial assistance possible, we were able to make Milo’s surgery happen. Two of our dedicated doctors, Dr. Grace Park and Dr. Kat Geating, cleared their schedules and performed the delicate procedure, collaborating closely with Milo’s family every step of the way. California passes a bill to make cruelty to animals a crime. 1884 First Horse Ambulance Before human ambulances appeared in San Francisco, the SF SPCA designed and constructed a horse ambulance—the first of its kind in the West. 1890 “Animals Home” Built SF SPCA builds “Animals Home” for lost and stray animals at the corner of 16th and Alabama Streets. 1905 Responsible for SF Animal Control SF SPCA is given full responsibility for animal control services in San Francisco. 1906 Helps Animals Post Quake SF SPCA comes to the aid of animals imperiled by the earthquake and fire. 1913 Our Animals SF SPCA publishes the first issue of Our Animals. 1918 Fire Department Horse Lottie G becomes the first fire department horse sent to the SF SPCA Animals Home. 1941 Pets Evacuated from Pearl Harbor SF SPCA receives and cares for pets evacuated from the Pearl Harbor Attack until they can be reunited with their families. 1963 New Animal Shelter New animal shelter opens at Alabama Street site. 1980 Mobile Adoption Outreach and Foster Care SF SPCA establishes one of the first mobile adoption outreach programs and a foster fare program. 1981 Animal Assisted Therapy The first humane-society based Animal Assisted Therapy program is created. 1982 Sido Program Begins Donor leaves funds for Sido program to help animals who outlive their guardians. 1998 Maddie’s Adoption Center Maddie’s Adoption Center opens as the first cageless adoption center in the United States. 2009 New Animal Care Center Leanne B. When You’ve Tried It All For pet guardians who adopted from the SF SPCA, please book a phone consultation with one of our adoption counselors to start the return process. NOTE: San Francisco county residents should reach out to San Francisco Animal Care & Control (SF ACC), if they did NOT adopt their pet from the SF SPCA. Pets should be surrendered to your local shelter if you live outside of San Francisco county limits. Click here to find the shelter in your county. Returns FAQs Can I return my pet to the SF SPCA? The SF SPCA can only accept returns of pets that were originally adopted at this shelter. I found a stray dog or cat in my neighborhood. Can I bring them to the SF SPCA? No. For all stray pets , please reach out to your local municipal shelter. Click here to find the shelter in your county . Do you take pets that are not cats or dogs? No. The SF SPCA is only able to house dogs and cats previously adopted from our shelter. Do I need an appointment to return my pet? Yes. Appointments are required to make sure we have a room available for your pet. Please start by booking a phone consultation with an adoption counselor so we can learn more about your experience with the pet. The consultation should take no more than 30 minutes. During the phone consultation, we can book a date and time to drop your pet off safely at the SF SPCA Adoption Center. What should I bring with me to my return appointment? Please bring the pet you are return ing, including any medical records from visits to the vet. You are welcome to bring up to one grocery bag filled with toys, beds, or other supplies to be sent home with the pet to their next home. You are also welcome to bring any crates or carriers to be kept with the pet or to be donated. Any pet items that do not need to stay with the returned pets may be donated for shelter and public use at the time of the appointment. What happens during a return appointment? How long does it take? Most appointments last no longer than 5 minutes . During your appointment, y ou will read and sign a relinquishment form , which transfer s ownership of your pet to the SF SPCA. This form can be signed on your mobile phone or on paper . Lastly, you will hand off your pet to our care team . How long does it take to make a return appointment? Return appointments are typically available between 1- 3 days after your phone consultation. Appointments are required to make sure we have a room available for your pet. Can you update me when my pet gets adopted again? SF SPCA policy does not allow us to provide updates once a pet has been return ed. Rest assured, your pet will be in good hands ! Can I exchange my pet for a different pet? Can I still adopt from the SF SPCA after I return my pet? We do not offer exchanges. However, our Adoptions T eam would be happy to facilitate the adoption of another pet , should we have one that better suits your needs and lifestyle . We realize not every pet is the best fit for every home . Will my pet be euthanized? Euthanasia only occurs if a pet has serious behavior o r medical concerns that cannot be treated or managed in a shelter. We never euthanize animals due to a lack of space. The SF SPCA’s top priority is to maintain a good quality of life for each pet in our care and the safety of our staff, volunteers, and community. What happens to my pet after I return? After a pet is return ed , they will be evaluated by our medical and behavior teams to set them up on the best pathway out of the shelter. Most return ed pets are adopted in to new homes . Our veterinarians recommend an annual professional cleaning, along with routine brushing at home, to help prevent more serious (and more expensive) dental issues down the road. If you’re starting to brush your dog’s teeth for the first time, we recommend taking it slow and getting your dog used to the process so it’s enjoyable for everyone involved. Why brushing your dog’s teeth is important Dental health plays a major role in your pet’s overall well-being. Dental disease is one of the most common conditions our veterinary team treats, and it’s often mistaken for a cosmetic issue. Left untreated, dental disease can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs, such as the heart and liver, especially in smaller dogs. Preventative care helps protect your pet’s health while keeping them comfortable, eating well, and feeling their best. Fresh breath (and kisses!) is just a bonus. Supplies for teeth cleaning success A dog toothbrush or finger brush designed for canine mouths. Dog-safe toothpaste in yummy flavors like chicken, beef, or peanut butter. Try to find a toothpaste that your dog enjoys the taste of and will lick off your finger like a treat. Avoid human toothpaste—it may contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs . Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle toward the gums and use light, back-and-forth motions. Be sure to be gentle. If the bristles are flattening, you’re likely pressing too hard. Through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), these cats are humanely trapped by community members, sterilized at the SF SPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic, and returned to the outdoor locations they call home. This prevents litters, improves cats’ health, and supports a stable, healthy outdoor cat population in our city. Our role  focuses on trap rentals, education, and referrals to neighborhood resources . Community members, independent trappers, and San Francisco Animal Care and Control (SFACC) play essential roles in intake, placement, and on-the-ground trapping. Community cats are unowned, free-roaming cats that live outdoors and are not typically socialized to humans. Because they do not adapt well to indoor life, they are not candidates for adoption. Many rely on caretakers who provide food and oversight. Altered cat colonies benefit neighborhoods by preventing the birth of additional litters. There are unowned cats outdoors in my neighborhood. What should I do? Our program supports spay and neuter services for unowned, free-roaming community cats. These cats are generally not socialized to people and do not thrive in a traditional home environment, so they are not candidates for shelter adoption. Community members can help by coordinating TNR efforts and returning cats to their original locations after surgery. What should I do if I find a friendly adult cat outdoors? Not every outdoor cat needs intervention. Many cats in San Francisco live safely outdoors or are indoor/outdoor pets. If a cat appears social or may be lost, San Francisco Animal Care and Control ( SFACC ) is the best resource for guidance on found, friendly cats and for determining whether intervention is needed. Please visit SFACC’s page about found pets to learn how you can help . What should I do if I find kittens outdoors? For kittens found within San Francisco city limits, please contact SFACC for assistance . For kittens found outside of San Francisco, reach out to your local animal shelter. What is TNR? Trap-Neuter-Return is a humane and effective approach in which community members trap free-roaming cats, bring them for spay/neuter surgery, then return them to the same outdoor location after recovery. TNR stabilizes cat populations and supports healthier colonies. Why is TNR effective? TNR prevents litters , reduces stress behaviors, and improves overall colony health. It is the best alternative to euthanasia for healthy, free-roaming cats who are not candidates for adoption. Why are community cats returned after surgery? Outdoor cat populations naturally expand to fill available food and shelter. Removing cats creates a “vacuum effect,” in which new, unaltered cats move in and reproduce. Returning sterilized cats to their familiar territory prevents this cycle and maintains a stable, non-breeding population. Why do community cats receive tipped ears? Ear-tipping is the universal sign that a cat has been spayed or neutered. It is done under anesthesia during surgery and signals to trappers and caregivers that a cat does not require retrapping . Ear tips are required for all cats in the Community Cats Program. Do you offer trap rentals? Yes. Humane trap rentals are available Tuesday–Saturday from 11am to 4pm at the Spay/Neuter Clinic (201 Alabama Street, second floor). A refundable deposit is required , and trap availability may vary. For rental details, email [email protected]. Do you have trapping tips? Effective trapping should align with your scheduled surgery appointment so cats are not confined longer than necessary. Coordination with neighbors is often key. Find our community cat trapping tips here . Do you offer trapping assistance? The SF SPCA no longer sends volunteers or staff to trap cats on behalf of community members. This shift strengthens program sustainability and ensures resources are focused on high-volume medical care. Community members who need trapping help can access trap rentals, online resources, or connect with independent trappers in San Francisco. How do I schedule a TNR appointment? The Community Cats Program provides free TNR surgery appointments for San Francisco community cats (and $50 per cat for those from outside the county). Appointments are available Tuesday through Saturday, with drop- off at 10am and pick- up at 5pm. To request an appointment, please text (415) 554-3084. How should community cats be transported? Cats must arrive in individual humane cat traps or metal transfer cages. For safety, we cannot accept cats in carriers, crates, boxes, or other enclosures. Cats remain in their traps for the entire TNR process, including recovery, to prevent injury and escape. Montana's Story Meet Montana, a 17-year-old Ragdoll cat who got a second chance thanks to the Sido Pet Protection Program. In 2009, Montana’s human, Trudi, enrolled him in the Sido Program when he was just two years old, knowing that he would be well cared for if he outlived her. Sadly, Trudi passed away in January of 2024 and Montana was transferred to the San Francisco SPCA. He was understandably shy and scared after losing his guardian and ending up in our shelter full of strange sights, sounds, and smells. We gave him some time to decompress, but it was clear early on that he was a very loving cat, and our staff and volunteers showered him with affection. The overall lack of access to veterinary care, including emergency care, results in delayed treatments, increased shelter relinquishments, and significant stress on shelters, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and animal guardians. We are committed to finding and advancing policy solutions to this shortage, thereby saving animals from suffering while helping shelters and guardians. Featured Legislation AB 516 and SB 602 AB 516 and SB 602 address California’s veterinary care shortage by increasing the efficiency and capacity of veterinary teams. AB 516 clarifies the tasks that Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) and veterinary assistants can perform, and SB 602 allows RVTs to lead wellness vaccine clinics without a veterinarian on-site, helping more animals in shelters and under-resourced communities access timely care. AB 631 AB 631 requires animal shelters to publicly post key data about their intake, outcomes, and operations. By increasing transparency and accountability, AB 631 helps communities understand local shelter performance and encourages adoption. AB 928 AB 928 strengthens enforcement against illegal bird trafficking by helping animal control agencies crack down on cockfighting. It aims to prevent cruelty and protect birds from exploitation. For more than 40 years, the San Francisco SPCA Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) Program has facilitated communication and healing by sharing the love of companion animals with those facing mental, physical, or educational challenges. Feature Programs​ Wag Brigade Our animal ambassadors ease the stress of air travel at San Francisco International Airport. One of our dogs, a pig, or a rabbit visits a terminal every day of the week. Puppy Dog Tales Our team visits children with reading challenges in schools, libraries, and clubs throughout San Francisco, to share literacy and a love of reading in a positive, non-judgmental space. Therapy Visits AAT Volunteers visit hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities, and youth facilities to share the therapeutic benefits of the human-companion animal bond. Teams are required to complete an evaluation and certification program that prepares them to work in the community. No. Our adoption center is walk-in only, so we operate on a first-come, first-served system. When you arrive, simply sign in at one of our self-service kiosks, and our team will walk you through the next steps. How long does it take to adopt a dog or cat? During our adoption process, we want to ensure that you have enough time to view as many animals as you’d like, get all your questions answered, and feel confident in your decision. The process takes about an hour, but can vary from person to person. We recommend visiting on a day when you’re not pressed for time. What dog breeds do you have? Our adoption center has large and small dogs and a team of adoption counselors ready to help you find your perfect match. Our dogs are typically mixes of popular dog breeds like Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls, and Terriers. Is every animal available for adoption listed on the website? Yes. We refresh our website every 15 minutes to ensure that it reflects all our available animals. When an animal is available for adoption, we add their profile to our website. As soon as an animal is adopted, we remove their profile. When you visit our adoption center, you may see animals that aren’t listed on the website. This means that they’re not yet ready for adoption because they may be receiving health checks or recovering from surgery. What does it mean if an animal is “free” or their adoption fees are waived? If you see that an animal is “free” or that their adoption fees have been waived, it means that our generous SF SPCA donors have sponsored their adoption. Sponsoring adoption fees help us get animals out of our shelter and into loving homes faster. Can I reserve an animal or place a hold on them? No, we do not reserve or place holds on animals. Your adoption is not complete until you submit your payment. Do you have any other animals besides cats or dogs? No. Although the SF SPCA rescued animals like pigs and horses when we were first founded in 1868, we currently only house cats and dogs. Can I just play with the animals? Although our animals are cute, you can only physically interact with them if considering adoption. Our animals get plenty of love from our staff and volunteers during the day, and we don’t want to stress them out by introducing them to too many strangers. Are the animals assessed and treated medically and behaviorally? Every animal on our adoption floor is medically and behaviorally assessed throughout their time at our shelter. Each animal is altered (spayed or neutered), microchipped, vaccinated, and given preventative flea, tick, and worm medications before they’re available for adoption. However, we recommend taking your new cat or dog to the veterinarian for a standard check-up after adoption. Have the animals been given all their vaccines? Yes. All of our adoptable animals receive a complimentary round of age-appropriate vaccines. However, your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccines and other preventive care. What qualifies as a government-issued photo ID? We will only accept a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state identification card, or U.S. passport. Do you offer any supplies at the time of adoption? When you adopt from the SF SPCA, we send you and your new companion home with a few days’ worth of food, a collar, a leash (if you’re adopting a dog), a cardboard carrier (if you’re adopting a cat), and a 20% discount coupon to Pet Food Express. We also sell basic supplies like harnesses, slow feeders, cat toys, and more at our adoption center. Can I return an adopted cat or dog to the shelter? Yes. We completely understand if an adoption doesn’t work out. The SF SPCA will always accept animals previously adopted from us with no judgment and no time limit. If behavior is an issue, we recommend meeting with our veterinary behaviorists or reviewing our behavior resources for advice.
