The word “Shanti” is the Sanskrit word for “inner peace.” Shanti is the place we find in ourselves… when we have performed a simple act of service that matters to someone else; when we are being with another person in just the right way; when we feel truly connected. The Shanti Model of Peer Support is a way of being with another person that frees both parties to be fully who they are and communicate their feelings to one another. It is a way of being which allows two persons to meet as equals. It is a way of relating to others that is characterized by certain values and attitudes. Definition of Peer We define peer as someone who is not necessarily like us in obvious ways, but is someone with whom we share a basic humanity; someone with whom we are equals. All people share universal human experiences. By virtue of this shared humanity, we are all peers. The Shanti Model of Peer Support is based on this equality. Values Underlying the Shanti Model of Peer Support mutual respect positive regard empowerment of the client (the assumption that the client has the solutions to his or her own problems and does not need your advice of direction) genuineness (being oneself, authenticity) acceptance of differences (does not mean agreement, but acceptance based on respect) empathy (allowing oneself to feel with another person) intention to be of service Techniques and Activities to Realize the Shanti Model of Peer Support Listening from the heart (listening with an open heart, being willing to be touched by another, willing to engage with another person’s emotions) Speaking from the heart (speaking authentically, honest self-expression) Acting from the heart in service to another person (acting based on compassion, caring, and an intention to be of service) Shanti Project 27 Maiden Lane, Suite 400 San Francisco, CA 94108 Phone: (415) 674-4700 Federal Tax ID: 94-2297147 | Privacy Policy | Terms of Use | Copyright ©2024 Shanti Project Search Posts Login Wednesday, 14, Aug Volunteers Are the Heart and Soul of Shanti’s Mission Friday, 17, Nov Client Spotlight: Edith Thursday, 16, Nov Building Social Connection: Sharing Food & Stories at Meals Heal Thursday, 16, Nov Shanti’s Volunteer Support Group Helps Make Volunteer Work Sustainable Thursday, 12, Oct 2023 Nancy Pelosi Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree: Tom Nolan Sunday, 24, Sep 2023 Margot Murphy Cancer Inspiration Award Honoree: Barbara Rose Brooker Welcome back, Username Password Remember Me LGBTQ+ Aging & Abilities Support Network - Shanti Project icon menu canvas Overview Services About About Us Our Story Shanti Model of Peer Support Staff Board Financials Careers Contact Us Programs & Services Overview Community Services HIV Programs LGBTQ+ Aging & Abilities Support Network Pets Are Wonderful Support Cancer Program Our Impact Overview Client Stories Impact Reports News & Events Shanti Voices Blog Events Newsletters Press Updates Volunteer Volunteer Opportunities Volunteer Applications Donate Donate Monthly Donate Stock More Ways to Give Legacy Giving Corporate & Foundation Partners About About Us Our Story Shanti Model of Peer Support Staff Board Financials Careers Contact Us Programs & Services Overview Community Services HIV Programs LGBTQ+ Aging & Abilities Support Network Pets Are Wonderful Support Cancer Program Our Impact Overview Client Stories Impact Reports News & Events Shanti Voices Blog Events Newsletters Press Updates Volunteer Volunteer Opportunities Volunteer Applications Donate Donate Monthly Donate Stock More Ways to Give Legacy Giving Corporate & Foundation Partners Show Search Search Search Hide Search LAASN Overview Services LGBTQ+ AGING & ABILITIES SUPPORT NETWORK (LAASN) LAASN provides compassionate supportive services that help counteract isolation and emotional, behavioral, and health challenges faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer older adults and adults with disabilities. This year, we are honored to celebrate 49 years of service in San Francisco. Throughout the years, Shanti has become a critical part of our City’s continuum of care, and we feel more connected than ever to our community—our clients, partners, supporters, and neighbors. Through our work, we foster a sense of belonging for the people who connect with Shanti—within our agency, within communities, and within our City. We are pleased to share the ways we reduce isolation and build belonging in San Francisco and beyond with highlights from fiscal year 2021-2022 (July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022). BY THE NUMBERS 2,100 People received compassionate care, connection, and community with Shanti 70 Shanti staff members made this work possible, including 24 who have been on staff 5+ years 170 People offered support as Peer Support Volunteers or Pet Assistance Volunteers 40,000 Hours of direct care were provided to clients by Shanti staff and volunteers Patricia HIV Programs Client “Through the groups and outings at Shanti, I have made friends in the community, which has helped lift me out of my depression. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Charles A. Garfield at the UCSF Cancer Institute, Shanti was one of the first volunteer organizations in the United States to provide support to people with life-threatening illness. From our earliest days, Shanti has engaged and inspired members of our community to be the difference between zero and one—the difference between facing life’s most difficult challenges alone or with one person by your side. Shanti emerged from the UCSF cancer ward halls to become one of the world’s very first community-based organizations to help support people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS during the epidemic’s early, most traumatic days. In 2001, we expanded our services to include women diagnosed with breast cancer, and in 2015, we expanded again to serve women facing any cancer diagnosis. Also in 2015, we merged with community partner Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), which became a program of Shanti’s. To bring our internationally recognized model of care to more members of our community, we launched two new programs in 2016. Our LGBTQ+ Aging & Abilities Support Network (LAASN) addresses social isolation as well as emotional, behavioral, and health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ older adults and adults with disabilities. Our Peer Advocate Care Team (PACT) supports current residents of Potrero Terrace and Annex to help them prepare for their public housing to be demolished and rebuilt into a mixed-income community. Provide emotional and practical support from staff and volunteers to help reduce clients’ isolation and levels of stress. Improve clients’ abilities to manage their health challenges and advocate for their needs. Enable clients to transition into survivorship and continue to provide support through survivorship.
