ABOUT OUR HOSPITAL As a first time parent of a one year old dog I’m pleased with Shatto Vet Service. I was very anxious not knowing what was wrong with my baby, but Doctor Yi was very knowledgeable and explained everything in details. I would highly recommend this clinic. Viktoria C. I love this place. The doctors and staff are very knowledgeable, nice and patient, they practice safety for themselves and their patience and owners. Everything is clean and sterile No bad smells. And best of all they are open 7 days a week. Helen H. They’re perfect here! The staff is super friendly and the vet is honest which I appreciate and I am sure many people will too. They have good pricing and were quick as well. Thank you again for such an awesome visit. Daritza G. As a first time parent of a one year old dog I’m pleased with Shatto Vet Service. Previous Next Preventive Care in Los Angeles Veterinary Center At Shatto Veterinary Center, we provide the highest quality preventative care, from vaccinations and parasite prevention to wellness exams and microchipping for your cat or dog. Our Los Angeles veterinarians believe that your pet's best chance for long-term health and well-being, from puppy and kittenhood to their golden years, is through consistent preventative care. We take a multi-faceted approach to your pet's preventative veterinary care. We encourage all of our clients to bring their companion animals in to us for a routine wellness exam at least once per year. During this exam, we check to make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations and may suggest other preventative healthcare procedures for them such as spaying, neutering or microchipping.  While microchipping doesn't have an immediate impact on your pet's health, placing this rice-grain-sized chip beneath your pet's skin and registering it with a database vastly improves their chances of finding their way home to you if they are ever lost. OUR PREVENTATIVE CARE ROUTINE EXAMS Tips & Advice From Shatto Veterinary Center Whether your are searching for advice about protecting your pet from parasites or for ways of helping your pet recover from a common illness, our veterinary blog features the tips and advice you need to keep your pet happy, courtesy of our expert Los Angeles vets. Methods for Tartar Removal in Dogs Tartar buildup in dogs happens thanks to the accumulation of plaque on their teeth, which hardens over time and becomes difficult to remove. If left untreated, tartar can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health issues in dogs. Today, our Los Angeles vets discuss how you can get tartar off of your dog's teeth at home, and when professional dental cleanings may be necessary. READ MORE Rabies Vaccine for Dogs Rabies is a potentially fatal disease. The best way to protect your dog and your family is to have them vaccinated against rabies. Today, our Los Angeles veterinarians explain more about this important vaccine, including how frequently your dog should get a booster shot. READ MORE Why are my cat's ears warm? The temperature of your cat's ears will naturally fluctuate, and while this can sometimes be harmless, at other times it can indicate an issue. Today, our Los Angeles vets share some of the potential causes and symptoms behind your cat's warm ears and what steps you should take if you have concerns. The temperature of your cat's ears will naturally fluctuate, and while this can sometimes be harmless, at other times it can indicate an issue. Today, our Los Angeles vets share some of the potential causes and symptoms behind your cat's warm ears and what steps you should take if you have concerns. Why are my cat's ears hot? While petting your cat, you may realize that their ears are warmer than usual. This can lead you to wonder 'Are my cat's ears supposed to be warm?' Well, cats can have warm ears for many different reasons, and some of them are perfectly normal. If you pet a cat with hot ears, some of the possible reasons may be: No reason at all Responding to the weather Allergies Fever Ear Mites Ear Infection Here we go into more detail about each of these reasons and what you should do in these situations: 1. There is No Reason It is important to understand that a cat's normal body temperature is slightly higher than a human's. Cats have a higher body temperature, ranging from 101° to 102.5°, compared to humans who typically have a temperature of 98.6° or lower. The takeaway here is that a cat's ears should feel just a bit warm. If your cat is acting normal otherwise, then there shouldn't be any need to worry. 2. Changes in Weather If you've noticed your cat's ears becoming warmer as the temperature rises, it's no coincidence. It's just your cat regulating its body temperature. To keep them from overheating, blood flow increases to the ears, paws, and nose, allowing them to easily release excess heat. However, extreme heat is still very dangerous to cats. Make sure you are keeping your cat cool by brushing them daily, providing them with a shaded spot, and making sure they have plenty of water. 3. Allergies Cats, like humans, can suffer from allergies. They are among the most common medical conditions in cats. Allergies can be caused by seasonal irritants such as pollen and grass, insects, and, in some cases, food. Symptoms of allergies usually include sneezing, wheezing, watery eyes, excessive licking, and, you guessed it, hot ears. If you suspect your cat may have allergies, you should speak with your vet. 4. Fever Moving on to more serious issues, a cat's warm ears may indicate a fever. However, warm ears will not be the only sign. If your cat is sick, you will probably notice or feel a warm belly. Some other symptoms may include: Isolating or not wanting to play Change in appetite Vomiting Diarrhea Lethargy Contact your vet or nearest emergency veterinary clinic right away if your cat is showing any signs that they are experiencing a fever. 5. Ear Mites Some cats can experience ear mite infestations. These contagious parasites live within the ear canal and reproduce continuously throughout their life. Ear mites are a common problem among cats and can cause severe itching and discomfort. They feed on the wax and oils in the ear canal, leading to inflammation (hence the warm ears) and potential secondary infections. Your cat will need to visit the vet for medication to help get rid of the mites. Without proper treatment, ear mites can spread to other pets in the household, as well as humans. It is critical to consult a veterinarian to accurately diagnose and treat the infestation, as over-the-counter remedies may be ineffective. Routine preventive care offered at our veterinary clinic is an ideal method of preventing many different types of parasitic infections. Speak to us about scheduling a preventive care visit. 6. Ear Infections Ear mites are one of the most common causes of cat ear infections. However, they are not the only possible cause. Other causes of cat ear infections include dirty, overly waxy ears, food allergies, environmental allergies, and trauma, such as a scratch or something stuck in the ear. In addition to warm ears, you might notice: A loss of balance Itching & head shaking A foul odor in the ear Red, inflamed ears Abundant ear wax Rubbing ears on the floor or furniture Ear infections can be painful for cats and can lead to hearing loss if ignored. This makes diagnosis and treatment a crucial step. Contact your vet right away if you notice any of the signs listed above. How will my vet diagnose and treat my cat's warm ears? At Shatto Veterinary Center, we will use our veterinary diagnostic lab to perform complete examinations of your cat's ears, along with a full health evaluation, which can help us pinpoint the cause of your cat's warm ears. Once the cause is diagnosed, we can then prepare a treatment plan. The treatment your cat needs will depend on the specific cause behind their symptoms. Note: The advice provided in this post is intended for informational purposes and does not constitute medical advice regarding pets. For an accurate diagnosis of your pet's condition, please make an appointment with your vet. If you notice anything strange with your cat's ears, or if they are showing concerning signs, book an appointment with our vets in Los Angeles. The best way to protect your dog and your family is to have them vaccinated against rabies. Today, our Los Angeles veterinarians explain more about this important vaccine, including how frequently your dog should get a booster shot. What is rabies? Rabies is a viral disease that can affect both humans and animals. The virus is transmitted via direct contact with the saliva or brain tissue of an infected animal. In people, this disease is usually transmitted through being bitten by a rabid animal. Rabies is a serious disease. There are no tests that can be done on a living person or animal to tell if they are infected and once symptoms appear the disease is almost always fatal. The majority of states require dog vaccinations. If your dog is not up to date on their rabies vaccine and is bitten by an animal, state law may require that your pet be quarantined for an extended period of time or even euthanized in order to protect other animals and people. This is why it's essential to keep your dog's vaccinations current. Click here to view the appropriate vaccination schedule for a dog. How often does my dog need a rabies shot? The required rabies vaccination schedule for dogs varies by state. In most states, your puppy will receive their first vaccination between the ages of 14 and 16 weeks, followed by a booster shot one year later. After that, your dog should receive a rabies booster every 1-3 years, depending on state law and the type of vaccine used. Your veterinarian is the best source for information on how frequently your puppy should receive booster vaccinations. Why are rabies boosters required? Vaccines teach the body how to recognize disease and mount an immune response that will target and destroy the virus if it enters your dog's body. Over time, this immune response wanes and isn't as effective. Booster vaccines re-build your dog's immunity to ensure they stay protected. Can a vaccinated dog get rabies? Rabies vaccinations are highly effective, but no vaccine can provide complete protection. So, while the chances of a vaccinated dog contracting rabies are extremely low, it is still possible. The best prevention is to keep up to date on your dog’s rabies vaccines over the course of their life. Are there any side effects of the vaccine? Following vaccination, many dogs will experience mild discomfort or swelling at the injection site, as well as a slight fever and fatigue. This is completely normal and typically resolves within a day or two. If the side effects last more than two days or worsen, contact your veterinarian. Occasionally, the injection site may remain firm and swollen for several weeks. If the swelling lasts more than three weeks or grows larger, it is time to take your dog to the vet. Rarely, your dog may develop more serious side effects. These will typically occur within minutes to hours after receiving the vaccine and require immediate medical attention. If your dog experiences any of the following, you should bring them to the closest emergency vet right away: Vomiting or diarrhea Hives Swelling of the muzzle and around the face, neck, or eyes Severe coughing or difficulty breathing, and even collapse. Overall, the rabies vaccine is extremely safe and an important factor in maintaining your pet's overall health. If you feel your dog is acting weird after a rabies shot, contact your vet. How much is a rabies vaccine for dogs? The cost of a rabies vaccine for dogs can vary depending on the clinic and the veterinarian administering the vaccine. It is recommended to consult with your local veterinarian for specific pricing information and to schedule an appointment for your dog to receive the rabies vaccine. Note : The advice provided in this post is intended for informational purposes and does not constitute medical advice regarding pets. Book Online (213) 352-1252 Veterinary Diagnostic Lab We use a variety of technologies, such as radiography for our diagnostic testing and imaging. This allows us to produce high quality images and diagnostic information about your pet's well-being and the health of their internal structures . At Shatto Veterinary Center , we have advanced tools to help accurately diagnose your pet's medical issues. We offer a variety of services, from digital radiology to ultrasound and cold lasers. With our diagnostic capabilities, we are able to effectively produce precise diagnostic information about you pet's conditions in order to provide immediate and customized treatment options. In-House Lab & Veterinary Pharmacy in Los Angeles We support our comprehensive veterinary services with our diagnostic lab in order to produce quick and efficient diagnosis and start treatment as soon as possible. Our pet pharmacy in Los Angeles is stocked with a range of prescription diets and medications, providing us with quick access to any medications your pet may need while in our care. Our Diagnostic Services With our in-house veterinary diagnostics lab we are pleased to offer advanced diagnostic testing to allow our vets to provide an accurate diagnosis of your pet's medical issues. Radiography (Digital X-Rays) Using a radiograph (digital x-ray), we can examine your pet's internal systems to reveal information that may be invisible from the outside. Radiography is safe, painless and non-invasive. It uses only very low doses of radiation. Because the level of radiation exposure required to perform radiography is very low, even pregnant females and very young pets can undergo this procedure. Radiographs can be used to evaluate bones and organs, and diagnose conditions including broken bones, chronic arthritis, bladder stones, spinal cord diseases and some tumors. Bloodwork At our vet lab in Los Angeles we are able to run a number of common and specialized blood tests to determine the health of your pet, and to diagnose illness. Some of the most common veterinary blood tests we do are CBC (complete blood count), white blood count, hemoglobin and MCHC, hematocrit, platelets, eosinophils, and blood serum profile. Heartworm Testing We run specific blood tests to check your dog for heartworms. An antigen test detects specific heartworm proteins which are released by adult female heartworms into the dog's bloodstream. In most cases, antigen tests can accurately detect infections with one or more adult female heartworm. Fecal Exams A fecal exam is the microscopic examination of your pet's feces. All fecal exams are sent out to a laboratory for full diagnostics. The goal of a fecal exam is the identification and treatment of any infections or parasites in your pet's gastrointestinal tract which may be compromising their health or the health of your household. Fecals allow us to determine if your pet is the host for parasites such as hookworms or roundworms. Parasites can cause pets to feel uncomfortable or irritable and, if untreated, can cause a number of other serious conditions. Some may even be transmittable to humans. Since GI parasites live inside your pet's body, they are often hidden from view. The only way to accurately detect them is with a fecal exam. Annual fecal examines should be a vital part of every pet's routine wellness exam. Happy Tails from Clients My go to vet! Common immune-mediated disorders in dogs and cats include anemia, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, allergies, and skin diseases. Emergency Vet FAQs Read through our most frequently asked questions below to learn more about bringing your pet in for an emergency appointment. Do I need to call ahead? You should contact the emergency animal hospital if possible and let them know that you are on your way. This will allow them to prepare for your pet's arrival. What situations require emergency veterinary care? The following situations are examples of emergencies that require immediate care: Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging Fractured bones or severe lameness Seizures and/or staggering Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours Injuries to the eye(s) Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine Heat stress or heatstroke Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more Unconsciousness Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.) How long will we have to wait to see the vet? Cold laser therapy uses a low-intensity laser or LEDs (light emitting diodes) to help relieve your pet's pain and enhance their cell function and improve healing. Our vets are passionate about providing the highest quality treatment for your pet and cold laser therapy provides a safe, non-invasive, effective way of alleviating pain and encouraging your pet's return to their normal, healthy selves. A wide variety of conditions have been shown to improve with the use of laser therapy including muscle spasms, arthritis symptoms and joint pain. The Cold Laser Therapy Treatment Process Cold laser therapy involves treating your pet by moving a handheld laser wand back and forth over the affected part of your pet's body, whether that be from an injury or some other health issue. Your pet will feel a pleasant and warm sensation in the area being treated and will probably find it enjoyable and relaxing. Cold laser therapy sessions generally last around twenty minutes. The number and frequency of these treatments will depend on your pet's specific healthcare needs. Uses for Laser Therapy Cold laser therapy has a wide range of uses and is highly effective when used in conjunction with traditional medications and other veterinary treatments. Laser therapy encourages cell regeneration and increases circulation, benefiting the following conditions and procedures: Wounds Strains & Sprains Bone Fractures Inflammatory Bowel Disease Degenerative Joint Disease Post-Surgical Recovery Inflammation Osteoarthritis Lick Granuloma Dental Procedures Benefits of Cold Laser Therapy Therapeutic laser treatments offer a wide variety of benefits to your pet. When your companion receives a low-intensity laser treatment, the specific wavelength of the light prompts the alteration of the physiology of their cells and tissues. Book Online (213) 352-1252 Comprehensive Dental Care for Cats & Dogs Routine dental care is a key component of your cat or dog's oral and overall health. Some pets may not receive the oral hygiene care the need in order to keep their teeth and gums healthy. At our Los Angeles veterinary hospital, we provide complete veterinary dentistry care for your pet, from basics such as dental exams, teeth cleanings and polishing, to dental x-rays and surgeries. We also make a point of providing dental health education to pet owners about home dental care for their pets. Dental Surgery in Los Angeles We know that discovering your pet requires dental surgery can be overwhelming. We do our best to ensure that this process is as stress-free as possible for both you and your pet. We'll do everything we can to ensure your pet's experience with us is comfortable and easy. We'll break down each step of the process to you in detail before the procedure, including preparation and post-operative care requirements. We offer jaw fracture repair surgeries, tooth extractions, and gum disease treatment for dogs and cats. Pet Teeth Cleaning & Exams Much like your annual checkup at the dentist, your dog or cat should come in for a dental examination at least once a year. Pets who are more prone to dental problems than others may need to see us more often. Shatto Veterinary Center can assess, diagnose and treat dental health problems in cats and dogs. Symptoms If you notice any of the following symptoms in your pet, it's time for a dental checkup. Bad breath Pain or swelling in or around the mouth Reduced appetite or refusal to eat Tartar buildup Loose and/or broken teeth Extra teeth or retained baby teeth Bleeding from the mouth Discolored teeth Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth Contact Us to Book a Dental Checkup Assessment We will complete a comprehensive physical assessment of your pet before their dental examination. We will take blood and urine analyses to ensure it's safe for your pet to undergo anesthesia. Additional diagnostics , such as chest radiographs or an ECG may also be conducted. After your pet is under anesthesia, we will also conduct a complete oral examination tooth by tooth as well as charting. Treatment Next, the teeth are cleaned and polished (including under the gum line) and x-rays are taken. We then apply a fluoride treatment to each tooth. The last step is to apply a dental sealant to your pet's teeth in order to prevent plaque from building up on their teeth. If advanced periodontal disease or other oral health issues are discovered throughout this process, our veterinarians will develop a treatment plan for your pet. Prevention Ideally, a follow-up examination will be scheduled two weeks after the initial assessment and treatment appointment. During this visit, we will discuss implementing teeth brushing at home. We can also recommend products that can help improve your pet's oral health. FAQs About Pet Dental Care Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from our patients about pet dental care. Why do pets need their teeth cleaned? Our pets can develop periodontal disease or tooth decay as a consequence of poor oral health. Just like in humans, when animals eat, plaque sticks to their teeth and can build up into tartar if not brushed away regularly. This can lead to infections in the mouth, periodontal disease, tooth decay, and even loose or missing teeth. That's why regular dental care is essential to preventing pain or disease in the gums. How can I tell if my pet has oral hygiene issues? Did you know behavior may be an indication of oral health problems? If your pet is experiencing dental problems, they drool excessively (and the drool may contain pus or blood), or you may notice them pawing at their mouth or teeth. They may also yawn excessively, grind their teeth, or stop grooming sufficiently. Other signs of oral health problems include bad breath, swollen gums, and tooth discoloration. Some pets may even suffer from pain that keeps them from eating. Read more about symptoms to the left under Pet Teeth Cleaning & Exams. What long-term problems can poor oral health potentially cause in my pet? Besides causing problems ranging from cavities and bad breath to severe periodontal disease, oral health issues and conditions can lead to disease in the liver, kidney, heart, and other areas throughout your pet's body. Cysts or tumors may develop. Your pet may also not feel well in general (if you've ever had a toothache, you know how it can affect your mood!). In addition, diseases related to oral health conditions can shorten the lifespan of your pet and cause significant pain. This is why regular dental care is so essential to animals' physical health and wellbeing. What happens during a pet teeth cleaning appointment? During your pet's regularly scheduled oral examination, our vets will look at their mouth and check for oral health conditions or any emerging symptoms which may require intervention. Our veterinarians will clean the debris and tartar from your dog or cat's teeth. If they find cavities, gum disease or any other conditions, they will walk through what they are with you as well as what treatment will be required to address the health issue. In some instances, surgery will be required in order to treat more serious health conditions. Your pet will be provided with anesthesia before their procedure in order to make sure they are comfortable and don't experience any pain. However, they will require special care from you to make sure they recover properly once they return home. What should I do at home to keep my pet’s teeth clean between dental appointments? At home, you should brush your pet's teeth on a regular basis and give them dental chew toys. These will help eliminate plaque. Do not allow them to chew on things that will damage their teeth, such as bones, toys or objects that are too hard. Always contact your vet with any questions or concerns regarding your pet's oral health. Veterinary Dentistry: Anesthesia & Your Pet's Oral Health Cats and dogs do not understand what is going on during dental procedures, and will often react to dental procedures by struggling or biting. Similar to the anesthesia provided to nervous or anxious patients by dentists, our Los Angeles vets provide anesthesia to all of our patients before performing dental procedures. This puts less stress on the animals and allows us to x-ray their mouth as needed. If left untreated, tartar can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health issues in dogs. Today, our Los Angeles vets discuss how you can get tartar off of your dog's teeth at home, and when professional dental cleanings may be necessary. The Importance of Tartar Removal for Oral Health As mentioned above, tartar buildup on a dog's teeth can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and even just bad breath. In severe cases, it can even result in tooth loss and infections that can spread to other parts of the body. The good news is that there are several methods for tartar removal in dogs, including at-home dental care such as brushing your dog's teeth with a pet-safe toothpaste, dental chews and treats designed to reduce tartar buildup, professional dental cleanings performed by a veterinarian, and specialized diets formulated to promote dental health. At-Home Dental Care Regular toothbrushing is crucial for maintaining good oral health in dogs. By establishing a routine of toothbrushing, pet owners can help prevent these problems and keep their dog's teeth clean and healthy. Introducing toothbrushing to dogs may take some time and patience. It is important to start slowly, allowing the dog to become comfortable with the process. Begin by letting the dog sniff and lick the toothbrush, then gradually introduce toothpaste. It is important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush specifically designed for dogs, along with a pet-safe toothpaste that does not contain fluoride or other harmful ingredients. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, to make the experience enjoyable for your dog. With consistency and gentle guidance, most dogs can learn to accept toothbrushing as part of their regular grooming routine. Veterinarians typically recommend brushing a dog's teeth at least 2-3 times per week. However, some dogs may require more frequent brushing depending on their breed, age, and overall dental health. Dental Chews & Treats There are various types of dental chews and treats available for dogs, including rawhide, dental bones, dental sticks, and dental toys. These products are specifically designed to help clean your dog's teeth and gums while providing a tasty treat. Dental chews and treats work by encouraging your dog to chew, which helps remove plaque and tartar buildup on their teeth. The chewing action also stimulates saliva production, which can help wash away food particles and bacteria that can contribute to dental issues. When choosing dental chews for your dog, it's important to consider the size of the chew in relation to your dog's size and chewing habits. You should also look for products that are approved by veterinary associations and made with quality ingredients to ensure they are safe and effective for maintaining your dog's oral health. Professional Dental Cleanings A professional dental cleaning for dogs involves a thorough examination of the mouth, followed by scaling to remove plaque and tartar buildup. This is done under anesthesia to ensure a safe and effective cleaning process. The veterinarian may also polish the teeth to smooth out any rough surfaces that can attract bacteria. Not only do professional cleanings help prevent dental disease, they also improve overall oral health. By removing plaque and tartar, professional cleanings can prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Additionally, regular cleanings can help detect any underlying dental issues early on, preventing them from developing into more serious problems. The frequency of professional dental cleanings for dogs varies depending on the individual dog's oral health needs. Some dogs may only require a cleaning once a year, while others may need a cleaning every 6 months. It is important to talk with your veterinarian to determine the best schedule for your dog. Specialized Dental Diets Specialized dental diets for dogs are formulated with ingredients that help reduce tartar buildup by promoting chewing and scraping actions on the teeth. These diets often contain ingredients like enzymes, antioxidants, and specific textures that help break down plaque and prevent it from hardening into tartar. These diets are designed to not only improve oral health, but also provide balanced nutrition for overall well-being. When choosing a specialized dental diet for your dog, it is important to consult with your veterinarian to ensure it meets their specific needs and dietary requirements. Book Online (213) 352-1252 Geriatric Care for Senior Dogs & Cats at Shatto Veterinary Center To assist in maintaining a good quality of life as your cat or dog ages, our vets provide your senior pet with routine preventative care and early diagnosis throughout their golden years. Diligent care can help extend your pet's life and good health as they age, so it's important that they attend regularly scheduled wellness exams , even if they seem healthy. Our veterinarians are here to help your geriatric pet in Los Angeles maintain their optimal health by identifying and proactively treating health issues as they emerge and while they are at their most treatable before they become long-term problems. Typical Health Problems Due to improved dietary options and better veterinary care, companion cats and dogs are living far longer today than they have in the past. While this is certainly something to be celebrated, pet owners and veterinarians now face more age-related conditions than they did in the past as well. Senior pets are typically prone to the following conditions: Joint or bone disorders Geriatric Dogs As your dog becomes a senior, there are a variety of bone and joint issues which they can develop and that will cause them pain and discomfort. Some of the most common joint and bone disorders in senior pets which are treated by our veterinarians include arthritis, hip dysplasia, the reduction of spinal flexibility, growth plate disorders and osteochondrosis. Addressing these issues early is essential for keeping your dog comfortable as they continue to age. Treatment for joint and bone issues in senior dogs ranges from simply reducing levels of exercise, to the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs, to surgery to remove diseased tissue, stabilize joints or reduce pain. Geriatric Cats While osteoarthritis is typically a condition we think of in older dogs, this painful condition can also affect your senior cat's joints. Symptoms of osteoarthritis in cats are more subtle than those in dogs. While cats can experience a decrease in range of motion the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis in geriatric cats include weight loss, loss of appetite, depression, change in general attitude, poor grooming habits, urination or defecation outside the litter pan, and inability to jump on and off objects. Lameness typically seen in dogs is not commonly reported by cat owners. Cancer It is believed that approximately 50% of all pets in the US die from cancers. That's why it's important for your senior pet to visit the vet for routine wellness exams as they age. Bringing your geriatric pet in for routine checkups even when they seem healthy allows your veterinarian to examine them for early signs of cancer and other diseases which respond better to treatment when caught in their earliest stages. Heart Disease Like people, heart disease can be a problem for geriatric pets. Senior dogs will common suffer from congestive heart failure, when the heart doesn't pump blood effectively enough and creates a fluid backup in their chest, lungs and heart. While heart disease is seen less in cats than in dogs, Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is relatively common. This condition causes the walls of a cat’s heart to thicken, decreasing the heart’s ability to function efficiently. Blindness and hearing loss Degeneration in the eyes and ears can lead to varying degrees of deafness and blindness in older pets, although this is more common in dogs than in cats. When these conditions are age-related they may come on slowly, allowing geriatric pets to adjust their behavior and making it difficult for pet owners to notice. Liver disease In senior cats, liver disease is common and may be the result of high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. Symptoms of liver disease in cats include loss of appetite, jaundice, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased thirst. Liver disease in dogs can cause a number of serious symptoms including seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, jaundice, abdominal fluid buildup, and weight loss. If your geriatric dog or cat is displaying any of the symptoms of liver disease, veterinary care is essential. Diabetes Although dogs and cats can develop diabetes at any age, it is most common in dogs between 7 and 10 years old and cats older than 6. Symptoms of diabetes in dogs and cats include excessive thirst, increased appetite accompanied by weight loss, cloudy eyes, and chronic or recurring infections. Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes in both cats and dogs. Kidney disease As pets age, their kidneys tend to lose their function. In some cases, kidney disease can be caused by medications used to treat other common conditions seen in geriatric pets. While chronic kidney disease cannot be cured, it can be managed with a combination of diet and medications. Urinary tract disease Our Los Angeles vets often see geriatric cats and dogs with urinary tract conditions and incontinence issues. Elderly pets can be prone to accidents as the muscles controlling the bladder weaken, but it's important to note that incontinence could be a sign of a bigger health issue such as a urinary tract infection or dementia. If your senior pet experiences incontinence issues it's important to take your geriatric dog or cat to the vet for a thorough examination. Veterinary Care for Seniors Our vets will thoroughly examine your senior pet, ask about their home life in detail and perform any tests that may be required to receive additional insight into his or her general physical health and condition. Based on the findings, we'll recommend a treatment plan that can potentially include medications, activities and dietary changes that may help improve your senior pet's health, well-being and comfort. Routine Wellness Exams Preventative care is the key ton helping your senior pet to live a healthy and happy life. It also allows our veterinarians to detect diseases early, when they are at their most treatable. Early detection of disease will help preserve your pet's physical health and catch emerging health issues before they develop into long-term problems. With regular physical examinations, your pet will have the best chance at quality long-term health. However, they will require special care from you to make sure they recover properly once they return home."
