The construction of the new Dharma Center is essential to the Betsuin and the evolving needs of the community. This project is the culmination of 10 years of planning. Guiding this process was an assessment of where we began, who we are today and what improvements are needed for a strong tomorrow, while aligning our vision with our core Buddhist values. The new Dharma Center addresses the needs of our Betsuin as well as our broader community. LEARN MORE DONATE TODAY UPCOMING EVENTS SJBCB Athletic Trophies: Own a piece of history – for free! Their performances have spanned the Bay Area, California, Hawaii, and Japan. Their repertoire has included English and Japanese songs, movie themes, religious tunes, and ones that have featured sign language. The choir is more like a family, according to Elaine Jones, a former director. “It’s been 14 years since I’ve seen many of the former choir members, and when I see them now (or get updates from their parents), I am delighted to see and hear about their journey into adult life,” Elaine said. For one Junior Choir alum, joining the group started out just as another church activity, but through the practices, performances and trips, his appreciation for the group deepened as he grew closer to the members. “My favorite memory were the recitals when we put on a large production and were able to entertain our friends and families,” he said. Isaiah, a current member, said: “I joined junior choir because it was a fun, extra activity that I could do with all my friends. I also loved all the food we would get to eat along with learning about our Japanese heritage. We learned some songs in Japanese, and now since I’m in high school, I’ve decided I want to be the first one in my family to speak Japanese since my great grandmother passed away.” The Junior Choir is open to Dharma School students from ages 3 rd to 12 grade. Choir members have also been recruiters for the group, exuberantly telling people at church services to: “Join the Junior Choir!” The Junior Choir was founded in 1965 by Yumiko Hojo, wife of Rev. Ejitsu Hojo and Buddhist music pioneer in the United States. She wrote and arranged some of the most popular and enduring songs sung in Dharma School services. The choir practices in the Hondo (temple) after the adult services. They have three major performances every year, at the Bodhi Day service in December, the Hanamatsuri service in April and the Junior Choir Recital in April. Over the years, the choir has performed not only at major Buddhist Churches of America events but also ones in the wider community. They include the Dharma School Teacher’s Conference in 1996; a visit by the head of the temple sect, Nishi Hongwanji-ha; JACL National Convention in 1996; the Council of Churches Interfaith Service for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001; Kyoto and Okayama during a 2007 trip to Japan; and one of San Jose Taiko’s Rhythm Spirit concerts. In the early 2000s, the choir performed original musicals for the spring recital, most notably one titled “Dorothy in Dharmaland,” inspired by the Wizard of Oz. Some of the parents displayed their artistic skills by designing building props and sets for the musicals, while others were in charge of lighting and the sound. Another attraction at the recitals has been the food, full lunches years ago and, more recently, gourmet desserts. When the choir went to Hawaii in 2003, they learned Pokemon Ondo at the Hilo temple, and brought it back to the mainland and the temple’s Obon Odori (Obon dance). It has become a favorite number during Obon and is also part of Obon dancing at other temples. Speaking of Obon dancing, the choir members and parents sell home-made snacks during the dance practices as a fundraiser. Echoing a sentiment of all the choir directors over the years, Elaine said: “I am thankful for the choir members and their families’ participation in the Junior Choir program, and hope that they have fond memories of being together. I hold these memories dear to my heart.” Choir alums also fondly remember their time in the choir. “Jr. Choir was a fun activity that enabled me to stay connected to the church over the years,” says one Junior Choir alum. “I’ll never forget our trip to Hawaii, traveling to perform in different places and bonding with other choir families.” If your child attends Dharma School and is interested in singing, please send email to [email protected] . Adult Buddhist Association Adult Buddhist Association About Us Adult Buddhist Association sjbetsuin 2021-10-29T09:19:56-07:00 The Adult Buddhist Association has been contributing to the temple for nearly 70 years. Famous these days for the wildly successful annual rummage sale, ABA (pronounced ah-bah) as it is known by many, started under a different name in 1953. The Nisei (second generation Japanese American) Buddhist Society was founded by former Junior Young Buddhist Association members and members of the Jr. Fujinkai (women’s association) who combined to form one organization. Its name was changed to the Adult Buddhist Association in 1990, to recognize the fact that many Sansei (third generation Japanese Americans) had joined the group. The preamble to the original NBS constitution said: “We pledge to perpetuate the teachings of the Buddha, to strengthen our personal faith, to develop leadership among Buddhist groups, and to cooperate in the promotion of mutual welfare of the Buddhist movement.” Over the years, ABA members have more than fulfilled the goals from that preamble. They have sponsored a retirement fund for ministers, published a book that outlined Buddhist funeral customs, helped lead the fundraising to construct the Annex building, financed new robes for ministers, and spearheaded the purchase of an organ for the temple. The association has been active in major temple and community events such as Obon, church clean-up, the Yu-Ai Kai Keiro Kai and mochitsuki. ABA’s own annual rummage sale is one of the most anticipated activities at the temple, bringing together a dizzying array of clothes, books, shoes, jewelry, kitchen ware and art work. Members also enjoy getting together for fun activities such as a post-Obon steak barbecue and joint outings with the Buddhist Women’s Association. ABA members have formed the backbone of the temple leadership. A number of them have become temple presidents and dozens have served on the Betsuin Board of Directors. ABA members have also served as president of the Buddhist Churches of America. In 1969, three women from the organization blazed a new path for temple leadership when they became the first women on the Board. Membership is open to anyone in the Sangha. As ABA approaches its 70 th anniversary, the organization is looking for new members to help continue their mission. One member says they will do “the best we can as our Issei and Nisei brothers and sisters did and do our best to carry the legacy they started to support the Betsuin and the Buddha Dharma.” Sunday Services : Dharma School : 9:30 AM, Adult Service : 10:10 AM © Copyright | San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Page load link Go to Top Sangha Support – San Jose Betsuin Skip to content DONATE TODAY Search for: About Us Services Your First Service Religious Materials Teachings Support Us Dharma Center Donate Today Planned Giving Membership Annual Obon Festival Annual Golf Tournament Programs Adult Buddhism Study Class Seminars Dharma School Disaster Relief Fund Japanese Language School Lotus Preschool Youth Organizations Adult Buddhist Association Buddhist Women’s Association Young Adult Buddhist Association (YABA) Affiliated Organizations Bonsai Club Kendo Judo Choir Betsuin Choir Junior Choir Clubs EcoSangha Jr. YBA Sangha Support Scouting Boy Scouts Cub Scouts Girl Scouts Calendar Upcoming Events Facilities Calendar Contact Resources Annual Reports Archives Betsuin Information Board Highlights Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) Dharma Newsletters Dharma Articles Facility Forms Scholarships Photo Gallery Sangha Support sjbetsuin 2022-02-28T20:12:05-08:00 Sangha Support The Sangha Support Committee (SSC) was formed in 1993 when Sumi Tanabe was the Betsuin Board President. Betsuin Choir About Us Betsuin Choir sjbetsuin 2021-12-31T10:04:43-08:00 For its members, the Betsuin choir provides more than just an opportunity to sing, it enables them to connect with other members of the temple, provides a way to express their joy in Jodo Shinshu teachings and to share Buddhist music with a wide audience. It’s been that way since the first choir formed in 1950. Over the decades, the choir has been a pacesetter among Shin Buddhist choirs, organizing the first Northern California Buddhist music festival, hosting music recitals and performing at major temple and Buddhist Churches of America events. The San Jose Betsuin Senior Choir was founded in 1950. Its first directors were music teachers from the San Jose Unified School District. The choir’s first performance was during a visit of the Gomonshu, head of the temple’s sect of Buddhism that is headquartered in Kyoto, and his wife during a visit to the United States. In 1959, Mrs. Yumiko Hojo arrived in San Jose with her husband, Rev. Eijitsu Hojo. Mrs. Hojo is one of the three women recognized as pioneers of Shin Buddhist music in the United States, along with Jane Imamura and Chizu Iwanaga. They wrote some of the most enduring and endearing English-language gathas sung by generations of Dharma School students and adults at services. Under Mrs. Hojo’s direction the choir began to sing at major services. Beginning in 1963, the choir performed in a recital that featured Buddhist gathas, Japanese folk songs and contemporary English language tunes. The event continued for 14 years. The choir’s contributions to the temple and the Buddhist Churches of America were recognized on its 10 th anniversary. Then-Bishop Kenryu Tsuji presented a certificate to the choir for “outstanding contributions to American Buddhism by developing interest in and appreciation for creative Buddhist music, not only in your own Sangha, but also throughout the BCA.” The choir milestones include a tour of Hawaii with the Junior Choir in 1982, a 1976 tour of the Pacific Northwest, performances at the Betsuin’s 100 th anniversary in 2002, hosting the first Northern California Choir Festival in 2005, and a joint performance with San Jose Taiko at the Japanese Immersive festival in 2018. “The choir offers a wonderful space to connect with sangha members and also provides opportunities to practice/experience interconnectedness, remain in the present, and learn about gathas,” says choir member Aiko Yep. The choir practices every Tuesday night in the Hondo (temple building), doing so via Zoom since February 2021 due to the pandemic. But there is a special night that the members look forward to … the monthly snack night. But that’s not the only social activity. “We’ll celebrate marriages, births, retirements, any reason for us to be happy for one another,” a choir member says. When Aiko Yep moved to San Jose, she decided to join the choir. “I previously sang with another temple choir, and when I moved to San Jose, I was excited to connect with the San Jose Betsuin and join this group,” Aiko says. Eventually, her husband, Ben, decided he would give singing with a choir a try. “I started choir at the same time I started to play ukulele, and because of that I was able to increase my confidence to sing for a public performance,” Ben says. During the pandemic, the choir gathered virtually to record gathas, which was not easy to do. The choir members had to record themselves singing, mostly on their own. Each recording had to be synchronized with the other recordings. The virtual performances were played during Sunday services and also at the Coast District Nembutsu Family Conference. These recordings have been used in our regular Sunday services and also will be available in the upcoming BCA Music Library for temples’ use when a musician is not available for services. The Betsuin choir members continue to do what they love to do best, singing together and sharing their love of the Dharma through music. About Us Dharma School sjbetsuin 2023-03-24T18:00:23-07:00 Dharma School Services Sundays – 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM This service is oriented toward the children and their parents. The services include incense offering, sutra chanting, singing, and a brief sermon (Dharma talk). The children are then dismissed to Dharma School classes. Classes Sundays – 10:10 AM – 11:00 AM Religious Education is offered for pre-school and school-aged children from the ages of 3 through 18. Classes are generally divided by grade level, except for Pre-School and High School. Teachers are generally lay members of the Sangha who volunteer their time. Classes are held in pre-assigned class rooms immediately following the Dharma School Service. The Dharma School classes participate in several of the special services conducted throughout the year. The children are thus introduced to and taught about Buddhism through Dharma talks, lecture, crafts, music, and activities. From time to time there may be field trips to other temples or local sites of interest. Betsuin membership is not required for your child to attend. However, we require every student to register. The Dharma School year mirrors the academic school year starting in September and ending in early June. The Dharma School Parent Organization (DSPO) staffs the cross-walk and provides the after-school snacks as well as organizes the potlucks for Bodhi Day and Hanamatsuri luncheons. People quiet down in silent meditation. Ministers walk to their seats At most services, the ministers and minister’s assistants will sit in front of the altar, facing forward. For special services, the ministers will sit in the altar area, facing each other. Chairperson The chairperson welcomes everyone and announces the gathas (hymns) and the sutras for the service, including the pages. The page numbers of the hymns and sutras will also be shown on a large monitor. Sutra chanting Ministers will lead the chanting. The sutras are the words of the historical Buddha or influential Buddhist teachers. We typically chant Dharma Talk The Dharma is the teachings of the historical Buddha and the founder of our sect, Shinran Shonin. The talks are given by ministers and our minister assistants in English. For those that understand Japanese, we have a Japanese language service on the second Sunday of the month, immediately following the Adult Service. Closing Gatha The Dharma School Service usually closes with another song. Announcements Events and activities are announced by representatives of various temple organizations. Incense Offering Everyone is invited to walk toward the metal burners and offer incense. There are usually two lines that form down the middle aisle of the temple. See the “How to Oshoko” section below for the preferred way of offering incense. Students leave the temple to attend Dharma School classes, located in the Education Building across the street. Refreshments After the end of the adult service and Dharma School (usually about 11 a.m.), everyone is invited for refreshments in the multi-purpose room of the gym building (located on the opposite side of the garden) or in the garden during the summer months. Visit us We accept everyone as they are. You are welcome to attend our Sunday services, where you can learn about Buddhism, meet our members and join us for refreshments afterward. What to expect during your first visit We offer many different types of religious services at our temple, but the most commonly attended is our Sunday Dharma Service, which is geared to families with school-age children and begins at 9:30 a.m. from mid-September to mid-June. An adult service is scheduled for 10:10 a.m. during the school year and 10 a.m. during the summer. Below is an outline of the format that these Sunday services typically follow. Many of our Dharma services are also recorded and can be watched on our Youtube channel What is the Hondo? The Hondo is the main hall of the temple where services take place. When we enter this room, it is customary to bow at the doorway, a mindful reminder that we are entering a place of peace and respect. Before exiting, you should also turn and face the altar, and bow again to show mindfulness and appreciation. We ask that you refrain from eating, drinking (water, in closed containers is permissible) , using your cell phone, and talking during the service. We recommend putting any phones on silent or “Do Not Disturb” mode so that you can remain fully present for the hour! It is also respectful to bow if you ever cross in front of the Amida Buddha which is the central figure on the altar. Japanese Language Service The second Sunday of the month we have a service in Japanese immediately following the adult service, usually beginning at about 11 a.m. Practices and Traditions If you’ve been wondering how to offer incense or where we gather for service you’re in the right place! In the following text, you’ll find walkthroughs, how-to’s, and explanations of common service practices and traditions that you might observe during your visit. How to Oshoko (Incense Offering) The literal translation of Oshoko is “burning incense”, but we often use this word to represent the act of offering incense. Many practices in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism are exercises in being mindful. What is an Onenju? The Onenju, or Ojuzu as some people refer to them, literally means prayer beads and were originally used as counting beads. But in our Jodo Shinshu tradition, they are a symbol of the 108 blind passions that influence our lives. So the Onenju serves as a way to be mindful of these things as we put our hands together in Gassho (literal meaning is “palms pressed together”). Temple Etiquette FAQs What should I wear to a service? At our services, you’ll see some members in their Sunday best, and some in more casual outfits, like a sweater and jeans. Is there anything I need to bring? For your first visits, you only need to bring yourself! If you have prayer beads (Onenju), you are welcome to bring those to use throughout the service, but they are not required. Do I have to make a donation to attend? All Sunday services are free and open to the public. Donations are always appreciated, but not required to attend! If you would like to make a monetary donation at the service, there is a black wooden donation box (Osaisen-bako) as you enter the Main Hondo and baskets beside each incense burner in front of the altar. Donations can also be dropped off at our Office. All service donations (Osaisen) go to support the activities of our temple. Can I bring my children? Yes! Our services and temple community are very family-friendly. There are times during service when we do ask that the Sangha (congregation) quiet all personal conversations. Our 9:30am Sunday Dharma Services are followed by Dharma School (Sunday School for K-12th Graders). If you are interested in enrolling your children, please visit our Dharma School page to learn more! How do I respectfully observe a service if I am not Buddhist? Whether or not you are Buddhist, here are a few helpful tips for visitors: We respectfully ask that everyone silence their cell phone when entering the Main Temple At the entrance to the Hondo, it is customary to bow toward the Main Altar (Onaijin), both when entering and leaving. You can sit anywhere you like and can find a seat by using the aisles on the outside of the pews (as opposed to the center aisle). Listen attentively to the Dharma message, sing along with the Gathas, and participate in the chanting if you’re comfortable! Your experience will be richer from it. After service, please plan to join us for coffee and snacks, either outdoors in the garden or inside our Annex building, depending on the weather. It’s always a wonderful time to meet people, share your experience, and ask questions! The Choir sings a combination of Buddhist gathas, Japanese cultural songs, and other selections. In addition to performing in several services throughout the school year, the Choir hosts an annual Recital Luncheon and Fundraiser. Currently, due the pandemic, the Choir is not meeting as indoor singing is considered a highly risk activity. Reverend Sakamoto hosted a blog during their 2007 trip to Japan. Junior YBA (Young Buddhist Association) The Junior YBA is a social and religious organization whose members are high school aged. The group occasionally have events which are open to all age groups. For the Junior YBA, active parent participation is required. Parents assist the students in the administration of their group and act as chaperones during the events. Some events involve travel to other temples, usually within the state, but often outside of the Bay Area. Activities include: volleyball, skiing, socials, volunteering and dances. If your child is interested, please contact the Betsuin Office at: [email protected] . Scouting The Temple hosts active Boy Scout , Cub Scout , Girl Scout , and Venture Crew organizations. Boys start with Tiger Cubs and can advance through Cub Scouts all the way through Eagle Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts start with Daisy and may advance through their Gold Award as Senior Girl Scouts. Active parent participation is required by all groups. Kansha was the compilation of the 75-Year history of the San Jose Betsuin (covering the period from 1902 to 1977). The book included photographs and key dates from each of the many Betsuin organizations. In March, we are posting the book for the 100th Anniversary of the Betsuin (1902 to 2002). I recently learned that the first Betsuin Board of Directors meeting to plan for the September 2002 Anniversary occurred in May 1999. During the early meetings in 1999, the Centennial Committee met every two months to develop a Theme, a budget, publicity, etc. In 2000, the meetings moved to monthly and included a project to upgrade the onaijin. In 2001, planning started for fundraising, and a banquet, and reservations for hotel rooms, plus planning for the Centennial Book. In August 2002, meetings were held weekly to cover final planning for the Chigo Parade, fundraising, the yearbook, the banquet, a Fun Day, Publicity, and a Golf Tournament. As I enjoy looking through the Betsuin Centennial Book, I have a deep appreciation for all the dedicated people, who worked many hours to put together all aspects of the 100th Anniversary . Please view the 100th Anniversary Book by clicking on the Learn More box below. Finally, if you would like to volunteer to help the Archives Group, please contact us by email at [email protected]. Learn More December 2025 As Mike Mori wrote in the October 2025 Dharma Newsletter, the Archives Committee has been actively working to upgrade the capabilities of the Archives Group equipment. We now have two upgraded iMac computers, one Windows PC, and one Windows laptop. We’ve also purchased a high-speed document scanner, and a high-speed photo scanner. Our goal is to digitize the many documents and photos in the Archives storage and move the files to the Cloud for safe keeping. In addition to keeping the files safe, storing photos and documents in the Cloud will enable us to share select items with the Sangha community. One example is the Kansha booklet that was put together for the San Jose Betsuin’s 75th Anniversary . The entire booklet can be viewed at the link to the right (Learn More). We hope you enjoy this look into the past, as we are looking forward to the 125th Anniversary in 2027. We will be working with all the Betsuin Organizations to support their archiving needs. All 11 years of age. They were the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin’s first Boy Scouts. Like all Scout groups, the new organization needed a numerical name. So the group became … Troop 611. Since then, hundreds of boys have participated in the troop, with about 165 of them earning the highest rank of Eagle Scout. The troop teaches the boys leadership and life skills, from first aid to time management, from cooking to teamwork. They learn to always be prepared, to be resourceful, and to appreciate the outdoors. If there is an activity at the temple, chances are Boy Scouts from Troop 611 are out front or behind the scenes helping out. “Troop 611 is a big part of my life,” says Aaron Oshidari, one of the current scouts. “I have made so many friendships, memories, and learned so many new things while being in the troop.” The troop meets the first three Wednesdays of the month on church facilities, and, from September to April, participate in one hike and/or campout per month, and attend a summer camp. Troop 611 Scouts also participate in a wide variety of other activities, including the Nikkei Matsuri, the temple’s Obon Festival and Bazaar, and the Oak Hill Memorial Cemetery Clean-up. They also perform community service such as coastal clean-up, Penitencia Creek tree planting and at the Japanese Friendship Garden. Parents also play an important role supporting the troop, driving their sons to meetings and serving on the parent committee positions that plan activities and oversee the troop finances. Derek Fujikawa, one of the assistant scoutmasters who himself is an Eagle Scout from Troop 611, says the troop “has meant a lot to me and my family”. His son, Colin, is a second generation Troop 611 Scout, and like his father, earned the rank of Eagle Scout . “My time as a scout in the troop were some of the most memorable times growing up,” Derek says, “From just hanging out with my friends to camp outs at Yuki Beach, to summer camp, I made lifelong friends and learned valuable life lessons. As a parent and leader of the troop, I got to see my son and his friends grow up and turn into great young men now off to college. The troop has given me so much that I am happy to continue on as a leader even after my son has aged out.” Derek is not alone. A number of fathers have continued to participate as adult leaders with the troop years after their sons have graduated out. Aaron says the adults and boys are a tight-knit group, but at the same time welcoming to all newcomers. “The troop has also taught me how to be a leader,” Aaron says. “Now being one of the older scouts, I have to step up and fulfill roles I was looking up to only a year ago, which has been a great learning experience not only for me, but for the younger scouts to see someone only a year older than them lead an entire troop.” Like Derek, Aaron is also looking to the future of Troop 611. Arron says: “The troop has helped me learn so many new things that I would never have even thought about had I not joined, and I am hoping that it will provide a fun and educational experience to future scouts as well as existing ones.” The Betsuin looks forward that future – and to the possibility of a third generation member of Troop 611. About Us Teachings sjbetsuin 2023-06-28T22:11:57-07:00 Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu The Three Treasures There are hundreds of sects and denominations of Buddhism in the world. One common thread that ties them together is the Three Treasures (also called the Threefold Refuge): Buddha (the Awakened One), Dharma (the Law or Truth, i.e., the Buddha’s teachings) and Sangha (the Buddhist order). A Buddhist is one who takes refuge in these Three Treasures. Dharma There have been countless numbers of Buddhas, individuals who have awakened to the Truth. That which distinguishes the Sakyamuni Buddha (the Buddha of the Sakya Clan), the “founder” of Buddhism, can be seen in examining the next two treasures, Dharma and Sangha Within the Dharma and Sangha we find the personal significance to the path of freedom, discovered or rediscovered by Siddhartha Gautama. After his enlightenment, Sakyamuni Buddha personally stated that what he discovered was nothing new. The Truth had always been in existence. He had merely rediscovered it. Through the Dharma and the acceptance of this Truth as a result of personal introspection, the Dharma came to life. After his enlightenment, Sakyamuni Buddha was not sure that this path to freedom could be understood by all mankind. He felt that man’s attachment to the ego was so strong that it would be virtually impossible to break from the bonds of self-centeredness and to realize, true compassion. The legends state that as he was contemplating whether or not to share the fruits of his enlightenment, two merchants, Tappussa and Bhallika, came and expressed their reverence towards him. Standing to one side they said, “Oh, Bhagavat (wise one), we request you accept this offering of wheat cake and honey cake on our behalf and help us attain peace and lasting benefit.”” The two merchants then prostrated themselves at his feet by touching their foreheads to the ground and stated, “Here we pledge our homage to the venerable master and Dharma. Oh, venerable one, please receive us as lay followers. From this day hence until the time of our death, we shall pay homage.” This was the first identification of the Buddha and Dharma, the first two of the Three Treasures. With this incident as proof of humanity’s potential to learn and benefit from his teaching, Sakyamuni Buddha traveled to Deer Park to share his discovery with the five fellow seekers who were still practicing the ascetic rituals that he had given up. The content of this first sermon given by the Sakyamuni Buddha to his five companions is known as “ shiten borin” setting the wheel of Dharma in motion. The contents of this sermon can be summarized as the Four Noble Truths. (1) There is suffering in our lives, as expressed in his first concerns of the eight suffering, which had lead him to begin his search. (2) This suffering is caused by our attachment to ego. The desire that the changing will become unchanging causes suffering. (3) It is possible to gain freedom from this suffering. If we can understand the true nature of ourselves and see the cause of our attachment to ego, we can find liberation from this cycle of suffering. (4) The Eightfold Noble Path is the process to transcend this cycle of suffering. The path is composed of Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Conduct, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Meditation. After hearing the Sakyamuni Buddha extol this teaching, each of his companions came to realize enlightenment. They took vows to follow the Sakyamuni Buddha and to share their understanding with others. This is traditionally viewed as the beginning of the Sangha, the Buddhist order. For the next forty-five years, the Sakyamuni Buddha continued to teach the Truth that he awakened to under the Bodhi Tree. In the Mahaparinirvana Sutra , it is written that at the time of the Buddha’s death, he told those gathered, after my death, the Dharma will be your teacher. Throughout his life the Buddha stressed the flow of wisdom and compassion as a dynamic activity reaching out to embrace each of us. Without the Dharma, and Sangha, at the time of the Sakyamuni Buddha’s death, this compassionate flow of the Truth may have stopped. However, with the Dharma as our teacher, this compassionate flow continues to reach out and embrace each and every one of us. Over those forty-five years of teaching, the Sakyamuni Buddha spoke of the Truth to which he had awakened under the Bodhi Tree. His method was to teach the Truth in such a manner that each individual would understand the Truth according to their individual capacity. After his death, these teachings were compiled, interpreted, and eventually became the foundation stones upon which each of the various denominations and sects of Buddhism developed their various practices. This compilation is known as the Tripitaka (Three Baskets). Although each particular denomination or sect may emphasize a certain aspect or interpretation of the Dharma, the first sermon by the Sakyamuni Buddha becomes the starting point of each. Our Jodo Shinshu tradition bases its teachings upon the Larger Sukhavativyuha Sutra , the Meditation Sutra and Amida Sutra . These three sutras are collectively referred to as the Three Pure Land Sutras . Sangha As mentioned in the account of the Sakyamuni Buddha’s meeting with the two merchants, Tappussa and Bhallika, they encouraged the Buddha to share his teaching with all of us. Kai Ho Zo (Open Dharma Storehouse) However, traditionally, Tappussa and Bhallika would not be considered to be a part of the Sangha. The Sangha was limited to the fellowship of Buddhist monks and nuns. Therefore, Tappussa and Bhallika, householders and merchants, would have been excluded. From a very orthodox view of the Sangha, it is only with the Sakyamuni’s preaching to his five friends and their acceptance and decision to join Sakyamuni Buddha, that the Sangha was established. It was a prerequisite to give up home and family and adhere to the precepts as a monk or nun to be counted amongst the Sangha. Up to the time of Honen Shonin in 1100s in Japan and even today, in some schools of Buddhism, enlightenment is only possible for those who had renounced their life in society and become monks or nuns. However, with Honen Shonin and Shinran Shonin’s break from the monastic tradition of Mt. Hiei, a new view of the Sangha developed. Through the development of the Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu doctrine, enlightenment was made accessible to the lay follower. Tappussa and Bhallika had venerated the Sakyamuni Buddha many centuries earlier, but lay followers were not considered to be a part of the Sangha. It was a result of the Nembutsu teaching, that Enlightenment for everyone became a reality. Shinran has written, Amida Buddha (Buddha of Infinite Life & Light)’s Primal Vow does not discriminate between the young and old, good and evil; true entrusting alone is essential. ” Onaijin (altar) donated in 1928 From a Jodo Shinshu standpoint, the Sangha wo Facilities Calendar – San Jose Betsuin Skip to content DONATE TODAY Search for: About Us Services Your First Service Religious Materials Teachings Support Us Dharma Center Donate Today Planned Giving Membership Annual Obon Festival Annual Golf Tournament Programs Adult Buddhism Study Class Seminars Dharma School Disaster Relief Fund Japanese Language School Lotus Preschool Youth Organizations Adult Buddhist Association Buddhist Women’s Association Young Adult Buddhist Association (YABA) Affiliated Organizations Bonsai Club Kendo Judo Choir Betsuin Choir Junior Choir Clubs EcoSangha Jr. YBA Sangha Support Scouting Boy Scouts Cub Scouts Girl Scouts Calendar Upcoming Events Facilities Calendar Contact Resources Annual Reports Archives Betsuin Information Board Highlights Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) Dharma Newsletters Dharma Articles Facility Forms Scholarships Photo Gallery Loading... The school continues to provide Japanese language education for the next generation of students from every background. Our teachers are native Japanese speakers that conduct classes in both English and Japanese allowing students to learn in a comfortable and inviting environment. Students learn reading and writing (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji), speaking, and important aspects of the Japanese culture. Creative teaching methods such as games and other fun activities (such as Radio Taiso, look it up!) are used to facilitate learning. Once the students learn some phrases, let’s take a field trip to visit shops in San Jose Japantown and practice shopping in Japanese! The JLS Parents Association is vital in supporting on-site school activities (snack sale at recess), yard duty, and other learning events during the school year. The Parents Association also supports the Japantown and Betsuin community through volunteering for the Nikkei Matsuri festival in May and the Obon festival in July. Parents and families of students are strongly encouraged to join and participate in the Parents Association. While affiliated with the Betsuin, the JLS welcomes both San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin members and non-members! Students periodically visit the church to listen to the Principal’s message on Japanese traditions and the Buddhism’s influence of Buddhism on Japanese culture. The beautiful Hondo is worth seeing! The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin is excited to be celebrating Obon with our traditional community festival on July 12 and 13. This event brings the community together and reminds us of the connections we all share – our interdependence and the strength we embody – together. Obon is a time to remember and honor those who have provided us with a strong and lasting foundation. And as we emerge from a historically challenging time, we acknowledge that much of our own courage, strength and compassion are rooted within our families, friends and loved ones. We celebrate our ancestors and our community. Giving In Gratitude has become an important and sincere expression of our gratitude for our past and the Betsuin. We are grateful and recognize the significant role of the Betsuin and Sangha in our lives. In the spirit of Obon and with gratitude, we hope you find this way of giving both meaningful and valuable. EcoSangha About Us EcoSangha sjbetsuin 2025-09-22T16:50:07-07:00 Eco-Sangha is Buddhist Ecology in action “To be a Buddhist is to be both an ecologist and a conservationist.” That is how Rev. Don Castro described what EcoSangha strives to promote. The term combines the words “ecology” and “sangha,” which is the Buddhist community. Together the word is a term used to call Buddhists to action to incorporate conservation in their lives. Rev. Don Castro, the retired head minister of the Seattle Buddhist Temple, is credited with starting the Eco-Sangha movement within the Buddhist Churches of America. The group’s mission statement is: As Buddhists, the EcoSangha of the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin recognizes that we are interdependent with all life. From this position of Oneness, we ask what we can do for our environment. The designers are Kodo Nishimura and Sergio Garcia. Our History The Buddhist Women’s Association is one the oldest, largest and most active organizations at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin. BWA members can be seen helping in a wide range of temple activities, from making sushi for the Obon Festival to cleaning the altar each year to helping at the Dharma School mochitsuki (making rice cakes). BWA members regularly visit patients at convalescent hospitals and raise money to support temple activities and organize food and clothing drives for charitable groups such as Yu-Ai Kai, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Women’s Gathering Place and Silicon Valley Strong, in addition to arranging fun social activities for themselves. The BWA has donated money for the organ, to buy robes for the ministers and to support the campaign to build new facilities. They are among the first to volunteer for any new temple activity. It wouldn’t be a Betsuin event without delicious food from the BWA. BWA members are inspired by the founder of the international organization. Lady Takeko Kujo started the BWA in 1905 at a time when Japanese women were absent from leadership positions. Despite her privileged upbringing as the daughter of the head of our sect of Buddhism, Lady Kujo focused her all-too-short adult life promoting Buddhist women’s activities and helping the poor. She founded one of the first modern hospitals in Japan, helped start Kyoto Women’s University, and spearheaded relief efforts after a devastating earthquake in 1923, including rebuilding a major temple. She died of sepsis at age 42, contracting the illness after working in poor neighborhoods. San Jose’s BWA was founded in 1908. It has successfully recruited a younger generation of women, who help keep the organization vital and energetic. The 140 members range in age from 14 to 101. The BWA is always looking for new members and is open to anyone who wants to join. Reflecting on the importance of the organization, a BWA member said: “I have come to understand that being a BWA member is about sharing the Nembutsu with our Buddhist sisters, whether they live nearby or half a world away; sometimes sharing that experience involves cooking and sometimes it does not. The BWA, and all of groups with which it is affiliated, inspires and encourages Jodo Shinshu women to live by Shinran Shonin’s (the founder of Jodo Shinshu) teachings and to help spread those teachings.” Our objectives are: To promote and cultivate appreciation of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist teachings To propagate the Buddha-Dharma in association with the Buddhist Churches of America and the BCA Federation of Buddhist Women’s Associations To participate in social welfare services in gratitude for the Amida Buddha’s compassion To promote the betterment of our family, church and society Current Activity BWA Volunteer Recognition (Fusaye no hi) – Feburary 1 This is a service to recognize the people who has contributed to the San Jose BWA in the past year. Our Legacy. Whether you took part in the building of the San Jose Betsuin, grew up within its community or are a newer member – we all share many of the same fond memories – dropping off our children at Lotus Preschool for the first time, attending Dharma School or Buddhism Study Class, participating in Scouting, preserving our heritage through cultural activities, staying involved through the many Betsuin organizations and enjoying the Obon Festival every year. However, our most significant memories are of the friendships we made and our ever-growing ‘family’… our Sangha . As our Sangha and the community continue to grow and change, the Betsuin must plan for these needs as well as for those of our future generations. The construction of the new Dharma Center is essential to the Betsuin and the evolving needs of the community. It is our turn. Our legacy. DONATE TODAY Lotus Preschool We have created a special way to honor and support the new Lotus Preschool home, by designating your gift. All generous donations between $10,000 to $100,000 and above will be prominently recognized on a Lotus donor wall acknowledging your generosity toward either a classroom or the new playground. Donations of $50,000 or above will be matched dollar for dollar by the Dharma Center Challenge Grant (made possible by an anonymous donor) . Please join us in believing in the future for the Lotus Preschool, the Temple and Japantown by helping to close the fundraising gap. You and your children undoubtably have many fond memories of Lotus. Together, let’s ensure future generations can also experience those moments. About Us About Us sjbetsuin 2026-04-17T16:37:09-07:00 History A little over 100 years ago, in carving out a new life in a new land, the pioneer Japanese immigrants, the Issei, established our temples as places to hear the teaching of the Nembutsu, to hold the rites of passage in life and as safe havens to gather. They overcame countless hardships in the process, adjust- ing to a new language and new customs, the Depression and prejudice. They struggled to not only establish their families but to ensure that those families, their children and grandchildren would have a safe place where they could gather and feel pride in their heritage by building our Hondo or Buddha Hall. Over 50 years ago, after returning from the relocation camps, our parents and grandparents built the Annex. The facility provided for the growing Sangha to gather and be with one another and the rest of the community, to have dances, large services and funerals, and sporting events. Today, the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin continues to serve as a gathering place to share the Buddha-dharma. It is now up to us to continue to ensure that our children and grandchildren will have the same opportunities to encounter the Dharma together in safe and beautiful facilities. Girl Scouts About Us Girl Scouts sjbetsuin 2022-01-28T13:42:30-08:00 Being a member of the temple’s Girl Scout troops is about learning together and being there for each other throughout years of projects, activities and having fun. It’s been that way since the Betsuin’s first Girl Scout troops were formed in 1971. “To me, Girl Scouts is all about community and having people to rely on when I need them,” said Kory, a member of a Betsuin Girl Scout troop. “I always know that my Girl Scout sisters are there for me.” Cora, a younger scout said: “I like that we can learn things together and we can always be there for each other and discover our differences. My favorite activities are doing art projects and playing games.” The Betsuin Boy Scout troop began in 1968, followed by the Cub Scouts in 1969. Roy Iwamoto, the then head of the temple youth programs, and others felt the temple should help provide similar opportunities to girls in the Sangha. He approached Ricki Miyahara, mother of two young girls at the time, to start organizing the program. Ricki was motivated by remembrances of the Scout programs at the San Francisco Buddhist Church. Two Girl Scout troops started in 1971, the Juniors and Brownies. A Cadette troop started the following year. A Senior troop in 1977, followed by a Daisy troop in 1985 and an Ambassador troop in 2008. Currently, the Betsuin sponsors 13 troops, from kindergarten through 12 th grade, with well over 100 girls and about three dozen adult leaders. The troops are open to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. The temple’s Girl Scout program has been a pioneer in integrating Shin Buddhism into scouting. Scouting had been a predominantly Christian-based organization, so scout leaders within the temple worked hard to establish Buddhism within scouting. The BCA already had a Boy Scout religious badge in place and Rev. Hogen Fujimoto of the BCA believed the Girls Scouts should also have one. He initially worked with Reiko Iwanaga to create the Padma Award with four levels. They wrote the requirements to correspond somewhat with the Metta and Sangha programs of the Buddhist Boy Scouts so that one teacher or minister could teach the boys and girls together. They were later joined by Jean Wilson, another Girl Scout mother and leader, who had Scout experience. Jean was instrumental in getting the badge accepted by the national organization and successfully lobbied to replace “God” in the Girl Scout Promise with a religious word of the scout’s choice. Jean became the chairperson of the BCA Scout Committee and Reiko continues to serve on that board where Padma badge requirements were recently revised (to meet the current needs of a wider Buddhist community). Reiko, another founding member of the first troops, combined the Girl Scout Law with the Six Paramitas, the six practices of a Buddhist life: Dana (giving), Sila (discipline), Ksanti (patience), Virya (Diligence), Dhyana (Concentration), and Prajna (wisdom). The scouts still recite that melding of the scouts’ law and Buddhism every year. She has taught the Padma Brownie level for over 45 years and Rinban Sakamoto has taught the upper levels throughout his long tenure in San Jose. In addition to working on scout projects, the girls participate in a wide variety of temple and community activities, providing a much needed pool of volunteers. They work on the Obon Festival and Bazaar, Church Cleanup, cleanup at Oak Hill Cemetery, Betsuin mochitsuki, Yu-Ai Kai mochitsuki and Keiro Kai, and Nikkei Matsuri. The Girl Scout groups rotate responsibility for decorating the yagura, the main stage for the Obon dancing. One time in the early years of scouting, the Girl Scouts brought Obon dancing to the Eastridge mall. And of course, the troops sell a small mountain of Girl Scout cookies every year. Those activities leave a strong imprint on the scouts as they grow older. Ashley, an Ambassador Girl Scout reflected on her journey through the program: “Girl Scouts has taught me many life lessons such as money management skills from selling cookies and leadership through hosting events, but something that I will cherish forever are all of the memories I’ve made, including Bon Odori dancing at night and going ziplining with my troop. All of the activities that you get to do makes Girl Scouts so much fun!” Currently, our program is open to girls beginning in Kindergarten through the 12th grade. Daisies Troop 273 – Kindergarten & 1st grade Brownies Troop 1052 – 2nd & 3rd grades Junior Girl Scouts Troop 260 – 4th & 5th grades Cadette Girl Scouts Troop 404 – 6th, 7th & 8th grades Senior Girl Scouts Troop 782 – 9th &10th grades Ambassadors Troop 782 – 11th &12th grades Girl Scouts of Northern California Girl Scout Awards Gold Award Information Silver Award Information Bronze Award Information Religious Awards Padma Award Projects We are Girl Scouts (Ashley H., Hailey H., Lauren G., Rina M., Hannah K. and Marissa P.) from Troop 61302 and we chose the Sow What Journey as our second Journey to complete in order to be able to begin our Gold Award. During our Journey, we volunteered at Sacred Heart, toured the Shuei-Do Manju Shop in Japantown, and had a video conference with a food scientist to learn more about food waste, planting seasons, eating locally, food labels, and nutrition. We have all learned so much in this Journey and if we can change the way 1, 5, 10, or 20 people think about food, we feel we have been successful. Please enjoy our information pamphlet. This is a great way to play while spending less time and money. This can be accomplished when working remotely, since the majority of slot machines have LCD displays that allow people to view the results. Online slots are fantastic because all players will be using the exact same tokens. If you’re looking to win real money online, then you should learn how to manipulate the symbols and icons to make the reels spin randomly. You might need to read the rules to play the game. But, this isn’t required, as you’re familiar with the basics. One way to increase your odds of winning is downloading a computerized slot machine program. Most of the progressive slots have video LCD displays so that we players can see Danska casinon med snabba uttag what is being played. Live dealer games are excellent because we can still play even when we aren’t at the computer. A lot of progressive machines come with audio tracks that let us feel as if we are there. Slot machines online pay out cash or in credits. There are progressive slots that feature progressive slots as well as jackpots that pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is a huge jackpot. We can get ourselves big payouts even if we do not have enough funds in our accounts. Credits can be purchased at any of the online casinos which offer a variety of different types of bonuses. Online slots also have other features that are important for players. One of these features is the random number generator. If you are a lover of slot games that offer various chances of winning, then you will certainly want to test your luck using any of these random number generators. Every casino site that wishes to remain competitive must have a random number generator. Without this feature, a casino site will become predictable to players and they will cease playing on the casino 1000 euro bonus senza deposito site. Online casinos with this feature allow players to win huge jackpots even though they do not have the right combination or the right number. This feature is unique to casinos that are online. Online slots may be difficult to understand. Paylines aren’t designed to aid you in winning. Paylines are designed to keep us playing. If there were no paylines, players could quickly lose their money and would stop playing. Many players abandon the game if feel they are not paying their casino debts. Paylines are designed to keep us playing until we’ve paid off all of our debt. This means that even if we’re playing but we’re not winning, the payline will allow us to keep playing. If we wish to avail some of the most lucrative online slots offers, then we should ensure that we know what to look for in the bonus offers offered by a specific casino site. We also need to ensure that we read up on all of the bonuses offered by the various websites. If we do these things, we can be sure that we’re getting the most out of every bonus provided by any casino website. Brandon Uenaka 2026-05-14T05:15:54-07:00 Share This Post, Choose Your Platform!
