He’s an inspired 2025 graduate of San Lorenzo High School, a freshman leader and first-generation student at Laney College in Oakland and, in his mind’s eye, a future alum of Morehouse College in Atlanta. That vision took hold in November 2024 when August visited Morehouse and several other Historically Black Colleges and Universities on a tour organized by the San Lorenzo Unified School District. Before the trip, he hadn’t even been sure about going to college and considered becoming a police officer or a firefighter. At Morehouse, August had an impactful meeting with then-senior Hudson Osborne, a 2021 San Lorenzo High graduate who last summer completed an internship with the European Union and is pursuing a career in international relations. He saw firsthand the confidence and pride that Osborne and other Morehouse students exuded. Although August’s late-decision application to Morehouse in spring 2025 fell short, he said he’s more determined to become a “Morehouse Man.” He attends every Morehouse-related event he can find, and recruiters, faculty and alums continue to encourage his hopes. He plans to join the liberal arts college’s Class of 2029, walking in the steps of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Class of 1948, and U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, Class of 1991, among many other notable grads. August (whose first name is pronounced Core-DAY) intends to use his story of persistence as the basis for his second application essay this fall. “I knew that I could get in, I felt it, and I haven’t lost the fire yet,” he said. His first Morehouse essay focused on the idea of perception — how he began to appreciate his innate abilities during his junior year at San Lorenzo High when seeing how other students perceived him. He recalls working in a group with “the smart people” in physics and their reaction when he was the one able to solve an especially difficult problem. At Laney, he is on track to complete an associate degree for transfer in political science and an associate degree in social science by spring 2027, with a plan to continue on to Morehouse as a junior. He is receiving financial aid and also benefiting from work study with the Peralta Community College District, which includes Laney. The Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) at Laney, which supports economically and academically disadvantaged students, is paying for his textbooks and providing other support. With Morehouse in mind, August is active in student clubs and organization. He is president of both the Black Student Union (BSU), for which he invited several Oakland leaders to participate in Black History Month events in February, and A2MEND (African American Male Education Networking and Development), as well as a member of the Associated Students of Laney College and the Umoja community for Black students. In early March, he attended an A2MEND summit in Long Beach, focused on African American male empowerment. His course schedule includes a class in public speaking, which is of particular interest to him. “There’s been a lot of hats I’ve been wearing,” he said. August has met students he remembers from attending Oakland schools, and said he feels seen and supported by Laney faculty and staff, including a counselor who is a Morehouse grad. “It’s a community college,” he said. “We’re all from the same community, and we’re all trying to achieve close to the same thing. We all want to further our education because we understand that education’s important.” August, who transferred to San Lorenzo High from online learning, said San Lorenzo was where “I rediscovered my passion for education,” adding, “They put me in position, for my education, to go to Morehouse.” At first, he recalled, he was just going straight home after school, but in his senior year he got involved with the BSU at San Lorenzo High and found new energy through extracurricular activities. He also pointed to his study of construction technology at the Eden Area Regional Occupational Center as a confidence-builder. August’s sights are set on Morehouse, but they don’t end there. He can envision himself becoming active in politics within Oakland and seeking elective office as a way to give back. “That’s where I’m from; that’s my community,” he said. “It needs to be taken care of, and I understand now that politics is what runs the world.” San Lorenzo Unified School District 15510 Usher Street, San Lorenzo, CA 94580 Phone: (510) 317-4600 Fax: (510) 278-3048 Back to District Site Useful Links To Access Your District Applications Use District Email (username & password) Edlio Login Powered by Edlio Family Portal Staff Directory Board Calendar Colonial Acres Elementary School Skip to main content Colonial Acres Elementary School Main Menu Toggle Our School Attendance Bell Schedules Calendar and Bell Schedule COST Referral Form Library Newsletter School Accountability Report Cards (All Languages) Staff Directory Student Handbook 2020-2021 Programs Uniform Complaint Procedures Williams Resources Our School Technology Support District Technology Tools for Families/Students Technology Support Kids' Corner Kids' Corner TK Kindergarten First Grade Second Grade Third Grade Fourth Grade Fifth Grade Library Kids' Corner Parents' Place Parents' Place Boys & Girls Clubs (After-School Program) Contact Us School Site Council (SSC) Parents' Place Search Facebook Colonial Acres Elementary School Home Home Page Main Image Shuffle Quicklinks News and Announcements Quick Links Upcoming Events We Are San Lorenzo Compassionate, collaborative and creative problem-solvers • Resilient and well-informed • Civically-engaged advocates for equity and social justice News & Announcements PRE-ORDER YOUR COLONIAL ACRES YEARBOOK BY MAY 22nd! Dr. Daryl Camp to Lead Statewide Advocacy Organization in 2025-26 Supt. Dr. Daryl Camp to Lead Statewide Advocacy Organization in 2025-26 Will Serve as President of 18,500-Member Association of California School Administrators San Lorenzo Schools Supt. Dr. Daryl Camp previewed his term as president of the Association of California School Administrators on May 8, asking members to “build bridges” by communicating the importance of public education to their communities and elected leaders. Quoting the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who said the moral arc of history “bends toward justice,” Dr. Camp urged ACSA’s 18,500 members to be loud and proud in support of students and schools. “Our loudness is here, and our power is here, in the stories you have,” he said during a 20-minute address in Burbank, adding, “Many of us live, and pray, in places that probably have similar values as you have. The problem is, if you’re not getting outside of your own homogenous populations, then we’re not building and we’re not connecting in such a way that’s going to move us forward.” Dr. Camp, who has led San Lorenzo Unified School District since 2019, was sworn into this new leadership role with the nation’s largest state-level advocacy organization for public education during an annual meeting. He began his path to the ACSA presidency in 2023, when he was elected as vice president. He was president-elect last year and will continue as past president in 2026-27. A public school educator in California for more than 30 years, Dr. Camp was previously superintendent of the Riverbank Unified School District and has been a high school principal and a middle and high school assistant principal, beginning his career as a math teacher and coach at James Logan High School in Union City. Th e Oakland native is a graduate of Morehouse College, a Historically Black College in Atlanta that was also Dr. King’s alma mater. Dr. Camp completed his master’s degree in educational leadership at then-California State University, Hayward, and his doctorate in educational administration at Sacramento State University. His call to action for the audience of about 300 attending ACSA’s three-day Leadership Training, Leadership Assembly and Board Meeting was in the context of national political polarization, particularly around such issues as immigration, education funding and diversity, equity and inclusion. ACSA lobbies in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., for financial support, legislation and policies that affect TK-12 school districts like San Lorenzo, while also providing a wide range of professional development and leadership opportunities for site- and district-level administrators. As ACSA president starting July 1, Dr. Camp will succeed Rafael Plascencia, director of personnel for the Tustin Unified School District. Parvin Ahmadi, who is retiring this year as superintendent in Castro Valley, was ACSA president in 2023-24. H e was introduced by a longtime mentor, Dr. Odie Douglas, a retired assistant superintendent for the Pleasanton school district, who hailed Dr. Camp’s career-long commitment to public service. The induction took place at the Marriott Convention Center. “In an era where leadership is often equated with position, power and prestige, Dr. Camp reminds us that the most powerful leaders are those who serve,” Dr. Douglas said. “… He leads with purpose, with humility and a deep uncompromising dedication to academic excellence for all children, especially those who have been historically underserved.” In Dr. Camp's remarks, which received a standing ovation, he paid tribute to his late parents, who were committed to education and who exposed their children to culture and daily life around the country and throughout the world. He also thanked his wife, Janee Cornelison Camp, and the couple’s two grown sons, Myles and Kendall, for their love and support, and he credited members of his district executive team for their dedication to improving outcomes for students. In conclusion, Dr. Camp pledged to carry the baton of ACSA leadership through the coming year. "I'm going to do my very best to serve you because I know you serve our students," he said. "I'm going to do my best to represent ACSA in a way that brings pride to the organization and those who came before ..., and I'm going to work diligently, and daily, towards a better education for the almost 6 million students in California." Dr. Camp’s leading role with ACSA was acknowledged by members of the SLZUSD Board of Education during their May 6 meeting, when several trustees thanked him for his commitment to students and families, both on the local level and beyond. “It is a huge deal,” Trustee Samuel Medina said, addressing Dr. Camp directly. “We really appreciate the work that you do in our community, but also the work you do in our state and nationally.” San Lorenzo Unified School District 15510 Usher Street, San Lorenzo, CA 94580 Phone: (510) 317-4600 Fax: (510) 278-3048 Back to District Site Useful Links To Access Your District Applications Use District Email (username & password) Edlio Login Powered by Edlio Family Portal Staff Directory Board Calendar San Lorenzo Unified School District Skip to main content San Lorenzo Unified School District Main Menu Toggle About Us Welcome Join the San Lorenzo Unified School District Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Mission, Vision & Goals Graduate Profile COVID Guidelines Key District Initiatives Become a Student with San Lorenzo Schools Anti-Bias Guiding Principles Staff SLZUSD Instructional Calendar About Us Schools Bay ES Bohannon MS Colonial Acres ES Edendale MS Corvallis ES Washington Manor MS Dayton ES Arroyo HS Del Rey ES East Bay Arts HS Grant ES Royal Sunset HS Hesperian ES San Lorenzo HS Hillside ES San Lorenzo Adult School Lorenzo Manor ES District Independent Contract Education (DICE) Schools Departments ● Educational Services Elementary Education Secondary Education Technology Integration Services Data & Assessment English Learner Program Library Services Special Services Student Support Services ● Business Services Maintenance, Operations & Transportation (MOT) Budget & Position Control Child Nutrition Construction Developer Fees Fiscal Services Purchasing Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee ● Superintendent Communications and Community Engagement ● Employee Portal ● Human Resources Personnel Commission Departments For Families Immigration Resources and Support For Families Wilma Chan Family Resource Center New Student Enrollment Inter District Transfers Instructional Calendar School Meal Services Data & Assessment Student Support Services English Learners Special Education Workshops for Families Small Learning Communities College Corner Library Services Canvas for Students & Families School Bus Application Family Technology Training & Resources Student Data Confirmation Quick Links for Family Access Reporting Covid & Other Illness For Families Community Community Partnership Portal Peachjar for Community Partners Health & Wellness Advisory Council Alumni Welcome to Our Mental Health Page Community School Board Board Members Board Policies Board Resolutions Board Office Hours Board Meeting Dates, Agendas, & Minutes School Board Search Facebook San Lorenzo Unified School District Home Home Page Main Image Shuffle Quicklinks News and Announcements Technology Resources Upcoming Events Enroll Your Student in San Lorenzo Enrollment in the San Lorenzo Unified School District is now open to new families for the 2026-27 school year.
