What Our Patients Are Saying
I had a dental problem over the weekend and called Huntington Dental Excellence first thing Monday morning. By lunchtime I was in their office getting it repaired. The dentist was fabulous and his technician, Chely, did a wonderful job as well as being friendly and considerate of my needs and comfort at all times. Everyone at this practice is definitely excellent and after being a patient there for 8 years, I will never go anywhere else!
Anne H.
I always have a great experience at this dental office. Gabi the hygenist takes a lot of care with my sensitive teeth, which is appreciated because I get nervous. I highly recommend them! They also have comfort items like pillows. Definitely worth checking out.
Annika G.
It was my first time going to Huntington Dental Excellence and I have never had a better experience at a dentist. Dr. Adrian Goei and Jenny were both really friendly and took a lot of time to help me. They had to numb my gums cause I had some cavities and I didn’t feel any pain during the procedure and even the numbing came with no pain or discomfort. They were both really professional and made sure everything they did was perfect. The office was also really nice and I didn’t have to wait when I arrived. I would definitely go again and I would recommend this dentist to everyone!
Klara V.
Dr. Yoo and Kelvin took great care of me! Everyone in this office is so kind and professional. They are very accommodating to schedules and make every effort to help you from making an appointment to getting the dental work done. I highly recommend them!
Sandy S.
Dr Gin Goei is a singularity. I literally do not know what to do when she fully retires. There are no other dentists who get even close to her level of knowledge, skills, patience, and charm. Her staff are great too. Chely, Irene, and Margie in particular are wonderful to interact with and always very helpful. I feel very lucky to have found them and seen them for the last 15 years.

Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Reasons to Get Dentures Dentures are not the only tooth replacement option. Implants have become more popular in recent years. However, not every tooth replacement option is the right choice for every patient. Here are several reasons people may prefer dentures to other tooth replacement options: Dentures may be an affordable solution to tooth loss: Other tooth replacement options tend to cost more, usually contingent upon the insurance provider. Traditional full dentures and partial dentures are typically more cost-efficient than the alternatives. This is true even when factoring in the cost of replacing the dentures every 5-10 years. Lower risk associated with denture procedure: The patient prefers to avoid the risk of a potentially painful bridge failure. Dentures can be received relatively quickly: The denture process typically takes less time than permanent procedures. The tooth replacement method the patient chooses depends on their unique situation. One should examine all their options when making this decision. Our team can offer the guidance you need in deciding if dentures are right for you. “Traditional full dentures and partial dentures are typically more cost-efficient than the alternatives.” Alternative Options to Dentures Dentures and partial dentures are two of the most common forms of tooth replacement treatment. However, there are other options available at our practice. These include various types of dental bridges. We will determine the most effective option for the patient's specific needs. Every patient's situation is different and needs a different solution. There are various factors to consider when deciding on the exact type of dental bridge, such as cost, number of missing teeth, placement of missing teeth, and more. During a consultation, we will answer any questions the patient has about the different options so they can make an informed decision. “There are various factors to consider when deciding on the exact type of dental bridge, such as cost, number of missing teeth, placement of missing teeth, and more.” Types of Dentures When considering dentures, patients can choose between full and partial dentures. In fact, over the past few years, dentists created hybrids with other dental treatments to provide patients with even more options. Here is a shortlist of denture options one can consider: Full Dentures Most commonly used by seniors, these dentures replace a complete set of teeth. They sit directly on top of the gums. Some patients are good candidates for immediate placement. In this instance, the dentist places the previously made dentures immediately after the extraction of the teeth. For everyone else, the dentist may recommend waiting eight to 12 weeks after teeth removal. Partial Dentures If the patient still has a number of healthy teeth left, the dentist may recommend partial dentures. This usually requires the use of a metal piece to which a pink-colored base is attached. The metal helps to anchor the false teeth to the natural teeth to prevent movement. Implant-Supported Dentures This method blends implants with dentures. Instead of anchoring all the teeth in place individually, the dentist may add several dental implants that hold the full upper and/or lower set in place. Dentists may use this for partial dentures, too. These dentures are not removable once in place. Please note that not all patients are good candidates for these. Overdentures or Snap-In Dentures When patients prefer to retain the ability to remove dentures but like the stability of implants, they may opt for overdentures. These are particularly useful in cases where a person has no teeth, as implants provide an anchor for the teeth to sit on. For even more excellent stability, patients may opt for snap-in dentures. In this case, the implants have locator receptors, and the dentures have attachments. These work together to snap the dentures into place for a snug fit. The option a patient chooses will depend on that patient's unique situation and health. Our team is available to discuss all the options. We will help you determine the right one for you. “In fact, over the past few years, dentists created hybrids with other dental treatments to provide patients with even more options.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Dentures and Partial Dentures in South Pasadena, CA How to Care for Your Dentures According to Mayo Clinic , both removable partial and full dentures require proper care to keep them clean, stain-free, and in generally optimal condition. For example, it is essential to remove and rinse dentures after eating (and brush the teeth after removing the dentures). Dentures should be rinsed thoroughly before put back in the mouth. Patients must also treat dentures delicately, making sure not to bend or damage the p Full Mouth Reconstruction – Huntington Dental Excellence South Pasadena California Skip to Main Content 1730 Huntington Dr Ste 202 South Pasadena, CA 91030 Call Us! This dental treatment can help patients restore their mouths from extensive damage, pervasive decay, and other comprehensive problems. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Candidates for Full Mouth Reconstruction Patients who have dental problems throughout their entire mouths and require extensive restoration are good candidates for full mouth reconstruction. These problems may result from significant trauma during an accident, decay, wear from grinding, or habit-based damage. Other treatment candidates include people with severe dental conditions from birth, such as amelogenesis, dentinogenesis imperfecta, and ectodermal dysplasia. Some reconstruction treatments involve surgery, particularly implants or procedures that necessitate bone grafting. This typically requires that the patient is in good overall health. Therefore, a full mouth reconstruction may not be an immediate option for patients with other health issues. “Patients who have dental problems throughout their entire mouths and require extensive restoration are good candidates for full mouth reconstruction.” Reasons Someone May Want or Need a Complete Mouth Reconstruction Various functional and cosmetic conditions may justify a full mouth reconstruction as a treatment. Patients should have a consultation with our team to will discuss their options. Some common reasons that people may want or need this procedure include: Aesthetic improvement: It is not uncommon for patients to seek a complete mouth reconstruction for aesthetic reasons. Discoloration, wear, missing teeth, and other issues may not impact function but can have an adverse cosmetic effect. Full reconstruction can help patients improve their self-esteem and enjoy the smiles they have always wanted. Dental decay or disease: Dental decay and other disease affecting the teeth can also necessitate reconstruction. In most cases, decay alone can be treated with less extensive procedures. However, if left untreated, tooth decay can put teeth at risk of needing replacement. Gum disease: Oral health can play a big role in the necessity for a complete mouth reconstruction. Gum disease can result in losing multiple teeth. This is especially likely if a problem goes unaddressed for too long. Oral trauma: A full mouth reconstruction may be necessary to restore the proper function of the teeth after significant trauma. Extensive cracking, chipping, and damage can require comprehensive treatment. Long-term damage from wear can also cause a person to want or need this treatment. “Various functional and cosmetic conditions may justify a full mouth reconstruction as a treatment.” Full Mouth Reconstruction Treatment Options The process of a full mouth reconstruction varies from patient to patient, depending on their preferences and needs. Full mouth reconstructions can include almost any dental procedure and combination of treatments. Some of the most common procedures performed during treatment include dentures, crowns, inlays, and onlays. Additionally, a complete mouth reconstruction may involve bone grafting, especially when implants are chosen. Dental deep cleanings are also an option to combat moderate to severe gum disease. People with gaps of missing teeth can choose to receive a dental bridge, while porcelain veneers are an option for people with misaligned or discolored teeth in the front. “The process of a full mouth reconstruction varies from patient to patient, depending on their preferences and needs.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Full Mouth Reconstruction in South Pasadena, CA Top Mouth and Bottom Mouth Reconstructions A common alternative to full mouth reconstruction is a partial treatment of just the upper or lower mouth. The treatments for both parts of the mouth are similar. However, according to the Mayo Clinic , the jawbone, which is at the bottom of the mouth, may require bone grafting if it is overly weakened or damaged. This can also happen with the top of the mouth but is less common. Some reconstruction of the jawbone and gums may be necessary to create a healthy smile even if implants are not used. “A common alternative to full mouth reconstruction is a partial treatment of just the upper or lower teeth.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option What is Dental Anxiety? Dental anxiety is a term used to describe feelings of fear, anxiety, or stress associated with visiting a dentist or undergoing a dental procedure. The Adult Dental Health Survey (2009) found that 12% of adults had extreme dental anxiety, while over a third (36%) had moderate dental anxiety. These feelings are quite common because of fear or trauma related to certain triggers, such as needles, drills, or the dental setting in general , that are brought on in early childhood. However, dental anxiety and phobias are often the result of avoiding crucial dental appointments and can significantly affect oral health. “However, dental anxiety and dental phobia are often the result of avoiding crucial dental appointments and can significantly affect oral health.” Causes of Dental Anxiety Patients of all ages and backgrounds can have dental anxiety. A multitude of factors may contribute to someone's unease at the prospect of being in the dentist's chair, including but not limited to fear of anesthesia, fear of injections, fear of pain, feelings of embarrassment, and feelings of helplessness. All of the above are valid reasons to be anxious. Still, they do not have to overtake a patient's dental experience. Patients should be open and honest with their dentist about their anxieties, as this is the first step to phobia management. At Huntington Dental Excellence, we believe communication is key to a successful dentist-patient relationship. “Patients should be open and honest with their dentist about their anxieties, as this is the first step to phobia management.” Coping with Dental Anxiety Dealing with a dismissive dentist may only make the problem worse. Therefore, the first step to managing dental anxiety is finding the right dentist. Patients should also ask office staff about any recommended coping strategies and agree on a signal to let the dentist know if they need to take a break. Mindfulness techniques can also help. Patients may want to try breathing exercises or doing body scans while in the dentist's chair. Others may benefit from distracting themselves by doing things like wearing headphones or occupying their hands. Additionally, patients should let the dentist know if they are particularly sensitive to pain, even with local anesthesia. There is no need for patients to feel embarrassed about asking questions or being open about their fear. This is the only way to develop a truly individualized plan to attack one's dental anxiety. “There is no need for patients to feel embarrassed about asking questions or being open about their fear.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Dental Anxiety in South Pasadena, CA Sedation & Dental Anxiety Some patients with more severe dental anxiety may require more intensive management measures. These include: Anxiety Medication: Typically, anxiety medication for dental anxiety comes in the form of a pill. It may be prescribed either by a dentist or a doctor. The patient will take a single, short-acting dose about one hour before their dental appointment. Conscious Sedation: Conscious sedation is a form of intravenous (IV) sedation administered either by a sedation dentist or an anesthetist. Patients under conscious sedation may drift off into a light sleep, making this known as “twilight sedation.” General Anesthesia: General anesthesia is the most intensive form of sedation, administered through a combination of IV medication and inhaled gases. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Causes of TMJ The source of the problem with TMD is the jawbone at the temporomandibular joint. The temporal bones are in the front sides of the face, underneath the ears. These bones connect to the jaw. This pair of joints act as a hinge to allow the jawbone to open and close. In addition, several muscles support the joint that works to help the mouth function. There are many possible reasons why patients suffer from TMD. Patients with arthritis, bruxism, high stress levels, poor posture, or misalignment of the bite may have TMD. Certain habits, like constant gum chewing, also sometimes lead to the disorder. According to the National Institue of Dental and Caniofacial Research , some estimates indicate that TMJ disorders affect over 10 million Americans. In addition, patients with TMD may have problems with arthritis at the joint, jaw muscle pain, or misalignment. A TMJ dentist has the right knowledge and understanding to treat this disorder and relieve pain and alignment. “There are many possible reasons why patients suffer from TMD.” Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) Damage to the individual components of TMJ can lead to several serious problems. These include: Intense headaches Ear pain Chronic TMJ pain Tense facial muscles Inability to open or close the mouth These conditions are known as temporomandibular disorders or TMD. Many people call them TMJ, though. A TMJ dentist understands how to alleviate joint pain symptoms using a combination of physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and advanced treatment options. “These conditions are known as temporomandibular disorders or TMD.” When to See a TMJ Dentist There are numerous signs that a patient might suffer from TMD and should see a TMJ dentist. Jaw pain, headaches, ear pain, sore jaw muscles, and clicking or popping in the jaw are symptoms of TMD. Seeing a skilled TMJ dentist helps patients determine the cause of these concerns. However, TMD symptoms are also common symptoms of other disorders, so it is important to get a medical professional's advice before determining if it may be TMD. According to the National Institute of Dental Craniofacial Research , there is no one diagnostic test for TMD. The TMJ dentist reviews medical and dental histories and usually takes X-rays to make a diagnosis. Then, the dentist conducts an oral exam to discover what the source of pain may be. “Jaw pain, headaches, ear pain, sore jaw muscles, and clicking or popping in the jaw are symptoms of TMD.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: TMJ Dentist in South Pasadena, CA How a TMJ Dentist Can Help There are many treatments to help with TMJ pain. Some reduce inflammation of sore tissues and strengthen the patient's jaw muscles. Other therapies promote relaxation and help to ease tense muscles and tendons. Another way TMJ dentists provide relief is by correcting poor dental alignment. When teeth fit together correctly, TMJ muscles can work smoothly. This can also help to prevent clenching and grinding. Using special orthodontic appliances or mouth guards, it is often possible to reduce the effects of grinding the teeth at night. “When teeth fit together properly, TMJ muscles can work smoothly.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Diseases That Cause Gums to Bleed Most forms of gum disease are caused by plaque. This sticky substance traps food and bacteria against the gum line. Over time, bacteria attack the gums, triggering inflammation and sensitivity. Without treatment, the problem can worsen. The gums may bleed while eating, brushing, or flossing. Gum problems have also been linked to heart disease and stroke . Often, smoking and poor oral hygiene are to blame for gum disease. But some patients may be prone to gum disease even if they brush and floss daily. Pregnant women may also be at risk for cavities due to changes in behaviors, such as eating habits. Patients who wear dentures are more likely to develop gum disease too. In rare cases, bleeding gums can be a sign of a severe condition like leukemia. Patients who notice bleeding gums should seek dental care right away. Our team can determine the source of the problem. If further tests are required, we help patients make the necessary arrangements. “Often, smoking and poor oral hygiene are to blame for gum disease.” Mouth Injuries Gums may also bleed after a common mouth injury. Patients may notice bleeding after eating sharp foods or suffering a sports injury. More minor injuries may heal on their own, but severe dental bleeding can be dangerous. Seek medical care right away if you experience heavy or uncontrolled bleeding. Taking some quick and easy precautions can help prevent dental injuries. For example, wearing a mouthguard protects the teeth and gums while playing sports. Avoid sharp foods like chips and hard candies, and never use the teeth to cut or tear objects. Keep appliances like dentures and retainers in good shape, too. Wearing a damaged or ill-fitting appliance can result in a serious mouth injury. If your device no longer fits, contact our dental team. We can provide a replacement. “Taking some quick and easy precautions can help prevent dental injuries.” Factors That Cause Gum Bleeding Smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco all increase one's risk for gum disease . The substances dry out the mouth and reduce blood flow to the gums. Over time, some patients may develop gum problems. Patients who notice gums bleeding should quit all tobacco products at once. A poor diet can also lead to vitamin deficiencies. If the body does not receive enough of certain nutrients, patients may develop gum recession. Blood tests can determine whether a patient suffers from nutritional deficiencies. If a nutritional deficiency is to blame, supplements may resolve the problem. Some prescription medications are associated with oral bleeding, too. Blood thinners, including aspirin , can increase the risk of bleeding. Patients who experience oral bleeding while taking these drugs need immediate care. Contact your healthcare provider for further advice. “Smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco all increase one’s risk for gum disease.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Why Are My Gums Bleeding in South Pasadena, CA How to Stop Gums from Bleeding Patients with bleeding gums sometimes stop brushing and flossing their teeth. Unfortunately, poor oral hygiene only worsens the underlying problem. As such, patients must continue brushing their teeth twice daily, even if they are experiencing gum bleeding. Use a soft-bristled brush and apply gentle pressure. Afterward, floss carefully to remove any debris that might be stuck in the gums. Our team may also recommend a specially formulated mouthwash or a saltwater rinse. These treatments help clear up the infection and shrink swollen gums. Oral rinses also flush away debris and help prevent plaque buildup. Preventing plaque is an essential step in the gum-disease treatment process. “Preventing plaque is an important step in the gum-disease treatment process.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. While it may not always be necessary, certain factors can lead to an extraction being the most effective option for treatment. Many people are intimidated when they hear they may need to extract a tooth. It is only natural since most people grow up being told their adult teeth should last the rest of their lives. If an extraction is necessary, it is crucial to speak with a dental professional. Tooth extraction is available at Huntington Dental Excellence in South Pasadena and the surrounding area. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option A Normal Procedure While it is best to preserve natural teeth, many reasons can necessitate tooth extraction. Sometimes a filling or crown is not enough to restore a tooth. The American Dental Association suggests the extraction of teeth that have suffered severe trauma, have extreme tooth decay or disease, or are crowding the surrounding teeth. It is also normal for patients to have an extraction or two before orthodontic treatment. Many tooth extractions are relatively simple and performed in-office. For teeth that are visible about the gum line, we will numb the extraction site and remove the tooth with forceps. Broken or impacted teeth require a more involved procedure. “The American Dental Association suggests the extraction of teeth that have suffered severe trauma, have extreme tooth decay or disease, or are crowding the surrounding teeth.” Reasons for Tooth Extraction Tooth extractions are often performed to stop an infection. For most people, this occurs due to gum disease. Gum disease is a result of bacteria getting below the gum line, causing an infection. If left untreated, oral bacteria may lead to receding gums, loose teeth, and jawbone damage. Gum disease is also reportedly one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. Chronic dental infections may also cause inflammation, a condition linked to several systemic diseases – including cardiovascular disease and stroke. Root canals are often sufficient to save teeth from decay. In rare cases, however, a tooth may be too far gone to reasonably save. In such cases, extracting the tooth may be the most reasonable option. “Tooth extractions are often performed to stop an infection.” Overcrowded or Impacted Teeth In some cases, it is beneficial to have crowded or impacted teeth extracted. Impacted wisdom teeth do not have enough room to grow. Extraction can prevent pain, infection, and other dental problems . While not all wisdom teeth need removal, it is necessary once they start causing problems. In some cases, wisdom teeth do not fully break through the gums and can cause crowding issues. A partially erupted wisdom tooth is especially susceptible to cavities. Patients may also need teeth extracted before receiving braces. Orthodontics involves the process of properly aligning the teeth, which may be tough without enough room. Crowded teeth increase a patient's risk of developing gum disease and cavities. Extracting teeth can relieve crowding and impacted teeth. “Extraction can prevent pain, infection, and other dental problems.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary in South Pasadena, CA When Tooth Restoration Is Not Enough Typically, the first option to restore a damaged tooth is a crown or filling. If the damage is too severe, trying to save a tooth may put oral health at further risk. A filling may put the tooth at risk for shattering, while a tooth may not be strong enough to support a crown. Root canals are also not possible when there is too much tooth damage. Each tooth has a limit to how many times it can be worked on before it starts to fail. Redoing a crown or root canal only buys so much time. After several fillings, crowns, and root canals, there will not be much of the tooth left to save. At that point, tooth extraction is the best option to maintain oral health. “If the damage is too severe, trying to save a tooth may put oral health at further risk.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. How does a dentist prepare a tooth for extraction? Q. What is cracked tooth syndrome? Accidents Leading to Tooth Extractions While adult teeth are extremely durable, they are not immune to damage. Both minor and major dental injuries can occur due to orofacial trauma. While most injuries from orofacial trauma are minor, some may be severe enough to necessitate tooth extraction. Common accidents leading to tooth extractions include, but are not limited to, car accidents, sports injuries, and slip-and-falls. Since time is of the essence whenever there is any damage to the tooth, patients must get to our office as soon as possible after their accident. We can examine the tooth for any signs of additional damage that may not be apparent to the untrained eye. Tooth extraction may be necessary if teeth have become severely fractured, making them loose and unable to be restored. Even seemingly mild dental trauma should be taken seriously. “Both minor and major dental injuries ca About Us – Huntington Dental Excellence South Pasadena California Skip to Main Content 1730 Huntington Dr Ste 202 South Pasadena, CA 91030 Call Us! Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Why Choose a Cosmetic Dentist A cosmetic dentist is a dental specialist who focuses primarily on cosmetic and aesthetic treatments for the purpose of enhancing patients' smiles. Cosmetic dentists can perform services such as dental bonding, teeth whitening, veneers, inlays and onlays, implants, and enamel or gum reshaping and contouring. In most cases, patients are referred to a cosmetic dentist by their primary dentist. Patients generally choose or are recommended to go to a cosmetic dentist when their teeth are chipped, missing, or otherwise need adjustment. Since they receive specialized training, most people would choose a cosmetic dentist rather than a general dentist for even the most basic treatments. There are a variety of oral and general health benefits to each cosmetic procedure. “Patients generally choose or are recommended to go to a cosmetic dentist when their teeth are chipped, missing, or otherwise need adjustment” Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry Cracked, crooked, discolored, and uneven teeth can impact people's confidence and self-esteem. It can influence their success in school and work roles, personal relationships, and mental health. According to one study, people's perception of their smile's appearance can remarkably affect their social and psychological well-being which is reflected in their behavior and can affect their self-confidence. Cosmetic dental procedures can enhance a person's appearance and help them smile and live more confidently. Cosmetic dentistry can also translate into better oral health by addressing decay and overcrowding that hinders the cleaning of teeth and gums. Some procedures can strengthen teeth and protect against further deterioration. Other procedures, such as bonding, can help teeth become less sensitive. “Cosmetic dental procedures can enhance a person’s appearance and help them smile and live more confidently.” Treatment Options Various procedures are available to choose from depending on the patient's needs and goals. People interested in receiving cosmetic dental treatment should have a consultation to learn about the available options. Our team will help determine the optimal treatment for each patient. Some common cosmetic dental procedures include: Bonding: This treatment uses resin to repair chips and cracks, close gaps, or shape teeth. Bonding is an alternative to metal fillings when the patient wants the repair to be discreet. Once the resin is in place, a special blue light will harden the material. Crowns: Crowns fit over the entire tooth. Filing of the natural tooth must occur to prepare a tooth for a crown. This filing leaves a “post” over which the crown sits when cemented into place. Enamel shaping: Enamel shaping is also known as contouring and is a simple procedure. Polishing tools removes a bit of surface enamel to smooth out chips or unevenness. Shaping is a quick procedure that does not require numbing. Gum reshaping: Gum reshaping is a solution for smiles that show a lot of gum. This procedure involves removing a small portion of gum tissue so more of the tooth is visible. Patients can have this procedure done on one tooth or several. Teeth whitening: Patients have several options for teeth whitening. Teeth whitening can occur in the dental office or come in the form of custom-made trays. Both professional teeth whitening methods utilize peroxide-based teeth whitening agents to remove tooth discoloration. Veneers: Typically made of porcelain, veneers are thin coverings made to custom-fit over teeth fronts and sides. The placement process involves buffing the teeth before cementing the veneers into place. Veneers improve the appearance of a smile while protecting the tooth’s surface from damage. “Various procedures are available to choose from depending on the patient’s needs and goals.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Cosmetic Dentist in South Pasadena, CA Preparing to Visit a Cosmetic Dentist Prior to visiting a cosmetic dentist, many patients address their primary concerns with their general dentist as they may be unfamiliar with the type of procedure they need. It is important to discuss each concern as the teeth naturally interact and affect one another. Give the dentist a general idea of the smile the patient would like to achieve and create a treatment plan together. Ensure that all priority treatments are taken care of before aesthetic ones. It is a good idea to come prepared with questions when visiting a cosmetic dentist for the first time. In most cases, they will have a referral consisting of the patient's treatment plan and desired results. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Try to Stay Calm Chipping a tooth can feel devastating, particularly because it can dramatically impact one's outward appearance. It can be difficult to think straight and create a plan of action after chipping a tooth, especially when it is accompanied by pain. The more one remains calm—using deep breathing techniques or a soothing mantra—the more efficiently they can help themselves by taking action. When someone has chipped a tooth, take a moment to first assess the situation. Ascertain to survey the extent of the damage, including any teeth that may have fallen out. Then, get to a calm place where you can sit down and collect yourself. “It can be difficult to think straight and create a plan of action after chipping a tooth, especially when it is accompanied by pain.” What To Do About a Chipped Tooth People suffering from a chipped tooth should schedule a dental appointment since professional treatment is the only way to fix it permanently. It is important to immediately take certain steps after chipping a tooth to address pain and protect the tooth and inside of the mouth from further injury. According to the American Dental Association , people should rinse their mouth with warm water right away to clean it. After rinsing, they should apply pressure to stop any bleeding and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. People should be sure to save any pieces of the chipped tooth and wrap them in wet gauze to bring to our dentist. While waiting to see our dentist, people can use over-the-counter pain medication to manage pain and discomfort. “It is important to immediately take certain steps after chipping a tooth to address pain and protect the tooth and inside of the mouth from further injury.” What to Do When Children Chip a Tooth It can be especially nerve-wracking when a child chips a tooth, particularly if it causes them a great deal of anxiety or discomfort. The most important thing that a parent can do when a child chips a tooth is to comfort them. This may mean not addressing the chipped tooth for several minutes until they have calmed down. After getting a clearer visualization of the chip, try to locate the fragment and make sure it is not posing a risk to the child's airway. According to the Cleveland Clinic, one may be able to preserve the chipped piece of tooth in cold milk or a specific salt solution. For children, it is important to follow the same steps that are advised when an adult chips a tooth. Control any pain or bleeding first, and then contact their dentist immediately. Dentists are able to repair chipped teeth in children in much the same way that they repair teeth in adults, so it is important to get follow-up care as soon as possible. “The most important thing that a parent can do when a child chips a tooth is, first, comfort them.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: What Should I Do If I Chip My Tooth in South Pasadena, CA Repairing a Chipped Tooth There are various methods to repair a chipped tooth, depending on the state of the patient's tooth and the type of injury. In some cases, our dentist can reattach the broken piece of a tooth. If the damage is minimal, our dentist may only need to use cosmetic contouring to polish the tooth's surface or smooth a jagged edge. Other options include veneers to cover a chip or dental bonding to fill in missing tooth structure. Chips that go below the tooth's surface may require more extensive repair, such as a root canal or extraction. A root canal is necessary when the damage enters the pulp and infects it. Extraction is the last resort when a root canal is not enough to save a tooth. Patients should contact us to find out what repair options are available. “There are various methods to repair a chipped tooth, depending on the state of the patient’s tooth and the type of injury.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. While many people are reluctant to get visible metal braces, Invisalign offers a clear, almost invisible alternative. This system of clear aligners gently moves teeth into alignment to help them achieve their smile goals. Invisalign is available at Huntington Dental Excellence in South Pasadena and the surrounding area. Patients in search of a discreet method of tooth correction can wear Invisalign without anyone knowing. Contact us at (626) 657-6335 to learn more about our services or schedule an appointment. Request An Appointment First & Last Name (Required) Email (Required) Phone Number (Required) How Did You Hear About Us? Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option How Invisalign Works To Straighten Teeth Invisalign treatment involves wearing a series of clear aligners that gradually straighten teeth over time. These aligners are removable and do not have any brackets or wires. They consist of a patented thermoplastic material called SmartTrack® that fits snugly over teeth. Each aligner in the series encourages a slightly different position than the previous one, making the overall correction a steady yet gentle progression. Before beginning Invisalign treatment, patients must schedule a consultation to discuss the process and have their smile thoroughly evaluated. During this appointment, we take digital scans, X-rays, and photos of the teeth and mouth to create a precise 3D model. This information is sent to the Invisalign laboratory, where a customized digital treatment plan is developed, detailing each step of the smile transformation. We review the plan together, and once it’s approved, Invisalign begins fabricating the custom-fitting aligner trays, designed specifically for the patient’s unique smile. “Invisalign treatment involves wearing a series of clear aligners that gradually straighten teeth over time.” The Creation of Invisalign Trays The process of receiving Invisalign trays typically takes about three* weeks. It begins with digital scans of the patient’s teeth, which we send to the Invisalign lab along with detailed notes outlining the desired course of treatment. The lab then reviews the case, determines the optimal number of trays, and sends a proposed treatment plan back to us. After reviewing the plan, we make any necessary modifications and submit the final adjustments to the lab. Once approved, the trays are custom-made—each one carefully trimmed by lab technicians to fit precisely along the patient’s gumline. This meticulous process ensures that treatment is not only effective but also as comfortable as possible. “The process of receiving Invisalign trays usually takes around three weeks.” The Benefits of Invisalign One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is its clear, nearly invisible appearance, making it a discreet choice for straightening teeth. The aligners are also removable, allowing patients to easily brush and floss without metal wires getting in the way. Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean, which leads to better oral hygiene and overall health. In contrast, crooked or crowded teeth can trap food particles and bacteria, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Teens and adults are typically the best candidates for Invisalign, as their teeth and jaws are fully or mostly developed. The system is highly effective for treating crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. “One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is its clear, almost invisible appearance.” Why Straight Teeth Matter Our teeth have a natural tendency to shift over time—especially when some are already rotated or overlapping—leading to an unstable dental arch. Without intervention, this crowding or malocclusion tends to worsen, making it more difficult to correct later on. While many people seek straighter teeth for cosmetic reasons, there’s an equally important clinical reason: longevity. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean. When teeth overlap, it becomes harder to brush and floss effectively, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Over the years, poor cleaning can lead to bone loss around the roots of the teeth. As bone is lost, teeth become more mobile, accelerating crowding and further destabilizing the bite. Left unchecked, this cycle can eventually lead to tooth loss. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Alternative Orthodontic Options While metal braces are the traditional orthodontic option, teens now have alternative options to straighten their teeth. Clear aligners are a great option for teens who want to improve their smiles but are worried about how their peers will perceive their appearance. These clear trays fit easily into a teen's life without interrupting it. They function the same way as traditional braces, applying gentle pressure to teeth to gradually move them into alignment. However, they consist of a flexible and clear plastic that allows teens to smile without brackets or wires getting in the way. These trays are also virtually invisible, so others may not even notice that they are wearing them. “Clear aligners are a great option for teens who want to improve their smiles but are worried about how their peers will perceive their appearance.” Save Time Straightening Teens with busy lives can benefit from clear aligners since they can save time from the straightening process. Braces require frequent office visits to replace or adjust wires. That can mean taking time off of school and other activities. Clear aligners require less frequent office visits to ensure treatment is progressing. Other than that, the patient can switch out their aligners at home. In general, clear aligners also take less time overall to complete treatment. The one-piece trays provide force to all the teeth at once, while braces move each tooth individually. In some cases, clear aligners can trim as much as six months off the treatment time than traditional teen braces. “Teens with busy lives can benefit from clear aligners since they can save time straightening.” Clear Aligner Benefits Teens who choose clear aligners can benefit from increased self-esteem and ease of use. How a person feels about their teeth can greatly impact their contentment with their overall appearance. Orthodontic treatment can significantly increase people's mental health status and improve multidimensional attitudes towards body image, according to a 2018 study . Clear aligners are great for teens since they are virtually invisible when worn properly. Another benefit of clear aligners is how easy they are to use. The trays are easy to put in and remove, which makes keeping them clean much easier. Teens can clean their teeth more easily than with braces since they do not have to brush around wires and brackets. They are also comfortable to wear since there are no sharp edges that can dig into gums. “How a person feels about their teeth can greatly impact their contentment with their overall appearance.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Alternative to Braces for Teens in South Pasadena, CA How Long To Wear Clear Aligners To get the best results, teens must wear their aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day. These clear trays can only work when they are in contact with teeth. Failure to wear them for long enough can result in delayed progression and a revised treatment timeline. Questions Answered on This Page Q. How do clear aligners save time straightening? Q. How do I take care of my clear aligners? Q. What are alternative orthodontic options? Q. What are some clear aligner benefits? Q. How long should I wear clear aligners? People Also Ask Q. What age groups use Invisalign? Q. What are the different types of cosmetic dentistry treatments? Q. How do clear aligners compare to traditional braces? Q. Are there any necessary dietary restrictions while wearing Invisalign? Q. What are some of the types of cosmetic dental treatments? Taking Care of Aligners While aligners are easy to take care of, they do require teens to be proactive about cleaning. Dirty aligners can accumulate bacteria, which can cause bad breath and harm oral health. Like teeth, teens should clean their clear aligners every day to keep the treatment process moving forward. Once they remove their aligners, patients should use warm water and a soft toothbrush to scrub the trays. Teens need to rinse their aligners with cold water every time they're removed and never leave them out in the open. Ideally, patients should only remove their aligners to eat or drink . Teeth should then be brushed and flossed before patients put back their aligners to prevent food particles from becoming trapped in the tray. Forgetting this step can lead to tooth decay and other concerns. When taken care of properly, clear aligners are less likely to cause cavities or tooth damage. Clear aligner treatment also improves the patient's overall oral health since straight teeth are easier to clean thoroughly. “While aligners are easy to take care of, they do require teens to be proactive about cleaning.” Frequently Asked Questions Q. What happens after I finish clear aligner treatment? A. After treatment, most people will receive a retainer. Retainers are important devices that prevent teeth from shifting back into the original position. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option What is Laser Dentistry? In laser dentistry, a dentist diagnoses or treats a dental concern using a laser, which is a tool that emits light. Lasers can cut both hard and soft tissues in the mouth, and they allow for high precision. They also can reduce pain and the likelihood of an infection. Patients who may be eligible to receive a laser dental treatment include those who require the following: A biopsy Cavity removal and preparation Gum surgery Surgery on other tissues of the mouth Additionally, people with high sensitivity in their teeth or dental anxiety can benefit from receiving laser dentistry. Lasers take up less space than a traditional dental tool, which is more comfortable for patients with small or narrow mouths (especially young patients). There are two categories of laser dentistry: soft tissue laser dentistry and hard tissue laser dentistry. “Lasers can cut both hard and soft tissues in the mouth, and they allow for high precision.” Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry A soft tissue laser can help manipulate tissues in the oral cavity that are less dense than teeth. These tissues include the gums and other soft tissues. A soft tissue laser cauterizes as it works, which means that patients tend to experience less bleeding during a procedure. Other benefits of soft tissue lasers are that they can reduce the chance of infection, are highly precise, and reduce procedural swelling and pain. Specific procedures that may incorporate a soft tissue laser include gum contouring or reshaping, frenectomy (removing the frenulum), crown lengthening, biopsies, exposure of partially erupted teeth, and periodontal disease treatment. Lasers can also help seal wounds and reduce bacteria within the mouth. “Specific procedures that may incorporate a soft tissue laser include gum contouring or reshaping, frenectomy (removing the frenulum), crown lengthening, biopsies, exposure of partially erupted teeth, and periodontal disease treatment.” Hard Tissue Laser Dentistry A hard tissue laser can manipulate the hard structures of the mouth, namely the teeth. Similar to soft tissue lasers, hard tissue lasers offer high precision, minimal pain, and fast recovery time. Thus, they are ideal for patients who experience dental anxiety from the sounds and sensations created by traditional dental instruments. Compared to a soft tissue laser, a hard tissue laser can cut through more dense materials, making it well-suited for procedures involving teeth and bones. The National Journal of Maxillofacial Surgery notes that hard tissue lasers can be used for preventing cavities, bleaching teeth, preparing cavities, and eliminating tooth hypersensitivity, among many other procedures. “Compared to a soft tissue laser, a hard tissue laser can cut through more dense materials, making it well-suited for procedures involving teeth and bones.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Laser Dentistry in South Pasadena, CA Advantages and Disadvantages of Laser Dentistry When considering whether to receive laser dentistry, patients should consider the advantages and disadvantages of this treatment. A major advantage of laser dentistry is that it can be less invasive and damaging to the oral tissues. Lasers can decrease the need for stitches and anesthesia. Wounds in the mouth can heal faster since lasers can help with blood clotting and sterilization. While laser dentistry is a good option for many people, it is not for everyone. For example, teeth with certain types of fillings like metal amalgam may not be able to receive laser treatment. Pre-existing surrounding tissue or components involving the tooth or gums can also prevent people from receiving laser dentistry. Additionally, some laser procedures will still require the use of anesthesia and other drilling tools. Our team can determine whether laser dentistry is right for a patient's needs. “A major advantage of laser dentistry is that it can be less invasive and damaging to the oral tissues.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. Dental crowns are available at Huntington Dental Excellence in South Pasadena and the surrounding area. Our dentists offer crowns and other options to help optimize dental health. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option What Are Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges? A dental crown is a cover shaped like a tooth that provides support and protection for a damaged tooth. This may be necessary when a natural tooth is broken, worn down, or structurally weak. A crown can also be placed on a tooth that has a large filling, which can weaken its structure. Crowns can also be used cosmetically to cover a tooth when the patient is unhappy with its color or shape. We also place crowns to support a dental bridge. A dental bridge is used to replace one or several missing teeth. It consists of the replacement tooth or teeth on a framework, which attaches to teeth on either side. This framework can be permanent or removable. To support a bridge, the teeth on either side need to be fitted with crowns. “A dental crown is a cover shaped like a tooth that provides support and protection for a damaged tooth” How Dental Bridges Work with Dental Crowns It is not uncommon for patients to get dental crowns to complete a dental bridge. According to WebMD , bridges fill in the gap left behind by a missing tooth. If a patient has a single missing tooth, dentists may restore it by creating a dental appliance that anchors to the two adjacent teeth. The dentist must reshape the two abutment teeth to secure the dental bridge. The abutment teeth are topped with dental crowns which attach to the new artificial tooth that makes up the middle piece of the bridge. “The dentist must reshape the two abutment teeth to secure the dental bridge.” Why Patients Get a Dental Crown Some patients may choose dental crowns to avoid further damage or decay to an existing tooth or to maintain an aesthetically pleasing smile. Crowns can also help prevent tooth loss that could lead to additional oral health problems and more expensive dental work. Additionally, patients may find crowns help them maintain a normal bite and keep the teeth from shifting. “Crowns also help prevent tooth loss that could lead to additional oral health problems and more expensive dental work.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges in South Pasadena, CA What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown At Huntington Dental Excellence, we offer the convenience of same-day or next-day crowns to restore your smile quickly and efficiently. Questions Answered on This Page Q. How do dental bridges work with dental crowns? Q. Why should I get a dental crown? Q. What is a dental crown? Q. When it comes time to get the crown, what should be expected? People Also Ask Q. How can a root canal help save my cracked tooth? Q. When is a dental restoration necessary? Q. What types of dental bridges are available? Q. What are some common dental emergencies? Q. What is restorative dentistry? Q. What are the benefits of restoration dentistry? Q. What is CEREC? Frequently Asked Questions Q. How long does a dental crown last? A. Crowns usually last between five and 15 years. Good oral hygiene can extend their lifetime towards the higher end of this range. Additionally, avoid putting stress on them by biting on hard foods or chewing ice. Q. What should I do if my dental crown comes off? A. WebMD recommends cleaning the crown and the accessible parts of the tooth. Call the dental office right away and follow the care instructions given until the appointment. In the meantime, it is possible to use dental adhesive or temporary dental cement to replace the crown. The dentist will either replace the crown permanently or order a new one. Q. How should I take care of a temporary dental crown? A. Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth with the crown, if possible. Likewise, avoid hard or sticky foods that could pull off the crown. Follow a regular oral hygiene routine but avoid flossing up and down around the crown, as that could displace it. Q. Is it possible to whiten a dental crown? A. Regular tooth whiteners do not work on dental crowns. It is best to choose the preferred color before the crown is placed. Most crowns are made of porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal. As a result, they do not discolor easily and should not present this problem once placed. Q. Will my dental crown look like a real tooth? A. Crowns are shaped to look like real teeth. We also strive to match them by color and ensure that they do not stand out among the natural teeth. While metal is sometimes used for crowns, it is generally reserved for teeth that are not visible. We will answer any questions the patient has before the procedure if the patient has any worries. Helpful Dental Information We offer helpful dental information such as the fact that you need to floss before brushing for any real effect. While we use regular dental checkups to clean teeth, we also use them to educate patients on proper oral hygiene. It is crucial for patients to brush their teeth twice a day and at least floss once a day to keep the teeth healthy. While regular brushing and flossing can help, they are not enough to keep teeth healthy on their own. By scheduling regular dental checkups at least twice a year, we can prevent any early signs of infection or decay before they get worse. Do not hesitate to give us a call, schedule an appointment and ask us any questions about oral health before we begin the procedure. 1730 Huntington Dr Ste 202 South Pasadena, CA 91030 Get Directions Call Us Today! However, the leading causes of tooth loss in older adults are gum disease and tooth decay, which are both caused by poor oral hygiene. Oral hygiene basics, such as proper tooth brushing and flossing, can help prevent these conditions and many other common dental problems. Dental care is available at Huntington Dental Excellence in South Pasadena and the surrounding area. Contact us at (626) 657-6335 to schedule an appointment. Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene Maintaining good oral health is important for several reasons. First, oral health problems like gum disease can cause health problems in other parts of the body, including heart disease. It is especially important for pregnant women to take good care of their oral health: Gum disease has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. It is hard to overstate the importance of good oral hygiene. Even for those who brush and floss their teeth properly, it is worth reviewing oral hygiene habits occasionally to make sure they are doing everything properly. Good oral hygiene involves consistent daily habits and the right products and regular appointments with a dentist. In addition, some family members, such as children and the elderly, may need special help with their oral hygiene. Most patients will require a regular dental cleaning at least once every six months. This cleaning removes any bacteria and tartar that has accumulated between the teeth and gums. Patients with gum disease may require a deep cleaning, also known as root scaling and planing , to remove larger amounts of bacteria and tartar buildup. “Oral health problems such as gum disease can cause health problems in other parts of the body, including heart disease.” How to Properly Brush Teeth The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that people brush their teeth for two minutes at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Brushing is crucial for removing plaque and bacteria buildup, which can both lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Poor brushing is almost as bad as not brushing at all. In order to remove bacteria and plaque, teeth need to be brushed for at least two minutes. Take the time to move the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions, and make sure to clean all the surfaces of the teeth. Proper flossing is also integral to a good oral hygiene routine. According to Healthline , patients should use 18 to 24 inches of dental floss, winding most of it around both middle fingers. Only about one to two inches of floss should be reserved for the teeth. Floss should be held taut between the thumbs and index fingers before being placed between the teeth. It should then be gently glided up and down. Patients should curve the floss at the base of the tooth, forming a C shape. A new, clean section of floss should be used for each tooth. The mouth is full of bacteria. Proper brushing and flossing can keep these bacteria under control and keep them from causing any damage. But if hours or days pass between brushings, the bacteria can build up. When left in place too long, the bacteria start attacking the teeth. “The mouth is full of bacteria. Proper brushing and flossing can keep these bacteria under control and keep them from causing any damage.” Helping Other Family Members With Oral Hygiene Children and seniors have special oral hygiene needs. Individuals with young children or older adults in their care may need to help them with their dental hygiene. Oral Hygiene for Kids Children will need help brushing their teeth until they learn to do it on their own. Start cleaning their gums with a clean, wet cloth before they have teeth to get them used to the routine. When a child's first teeth start to appear, brush them twice a day with a child-sized toothbrush with soft bristles. Start flossing as soon as the child has teeth in contact with each other. This usually occurs around the ages of two and three. Once children can hold a toothbrush, encourage them to brush their teeth. Watch them to make sure their teeth are being cleaned properly. To make brushing more fun, let them pick out a toothbrush featuring their favorite cartoon character. Make it into a fun family activity by brushing with them and playing a song. Continue to supervise the brushing until they have adopted good oral hygiene habits. Oral Care for Older Adults Older adults are more likely to have special oral hygiene needs. Many seniors are more likely to have untreated tooth decay or gum disease. According to the CDC , from 2015-2018, 1 in 8 adults age 65 and older experienced complete tooth loss. Older adults are also likely to take multiple prescription and over-the-counter medications, increasing the likelihood of dry mouth. Dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay. Encourage older adults to brush their teeth regularly, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration. Older adults may also benefit from adding a fluoride rinse to their oral care routine to combat tooth decay. Adults with dentures may also need products designed specifically for denture care. For example, tartar can build up on dentures just as it does on teeth. Denture cleanser tablets are designed to keep dentures free of odor, stains, and bacteria, and many are safe for overnight soaking. “Children and seniors have special oral hygiene needs.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Oral Hygiene Basics in South Pasadena, CA How to Keep the Smile Healthy and Prevent Tooth Decay Following a dental hygiene routine with at-home care and regular dental checkups will help keep the smile healthy and prevent t Patient Information – Huntington Dental Excellence South Pasadena California Skip to Main Content 1730 Huntington Dr Ste 202 South Pasadena, CA 91030 Call Us! Existing Patient Google Discovered Online Word of Mouth Facebook or Other Social Media Other Select an Option Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Extractions Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars and permanent teeth that emerge in the back of the mouth. They generally erupt between the ages of 17 and 21, granting them the name "wisdom teeth." However, in some cases, they never come out at all. Since they are the last teeth on each arch and have no security between them, wisdom teeth can erupt at any angle. Wisdom teeth are often removed for preventive purposes, as they can cause pain and oral health problems later in life, even if there is no present pain. Extraction becomes necessary when the wisdom tooth or teeth are damaging the other teeth or the jaw, causing sinus issues, inflamed gums and cavities, or are impacting teeth alignment. These more serious problems can result in various oral conditions as the patient gets older. “Extraction becomes necessary when the wisdom tooth or teeth are causing damage to other teeth or the jaw, causing sinus issues, inflamed gums and cavities, or are impacting teeth alignment.” Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth—and Why Are They Removed? Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars and the last permanent teeth to emerge, typically appearing between the ages of 17 and 21. Because they arrive in early adulthood, they’ve earned the name “wisdom teeth.” However, not everyone develops them, and in many cases, they remain impacted beneath the gums. Historically, our ancestors had larger jaws and consumed tougher foods, which made these extra molars useful. They also helped compensate for tooth loss earlier in life. But with modern diets, improved oral hygiene, and smaller jaw sizes, wisdom teeth often do not have the space to erupt properly. This can lead to several issues, including: Damage to neighboring teeth Sinus complications Gum inflammation Cavities Misalignment of surrounding teeth Even if no discomfort is present now, wisdom teeth are frequently removed as a preventive measure to avoid complications in the future. “Even if no discomfort is present now, wisdom teeth are frequently removed as a preventive measure to avoid complications in the future.” Potential Risks Although wisdom teeth extraction is a common and safe procedure, there are a variety of Potential risks are involved with extracting any tooth. We conduct a thorough examination and discussion of each patient's medical and dental history to determine whether they would be a good candidate for extraction. Some of the risks associated with wisdom tooth extraction include: Dry socket, or exposure of bone when the post-surgical blood clot is lost from the site of the surgical wound Infection in the socket from bacteria or trapped food particles Damage to nearby teeth, nerves, jawbone, or sinuses While there is always a risk of complications with any procedure, we follow strict standard operating protocols and maintain a safe, sterile surgical environment to minimize those risks and ensure a smooth, uneventful experience for our patients. “Although wisdom teeth extraction is common and safe, there are a variety of potential risks involved with extracting any tooth.” Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Extraction The first step in the wisdom teeth extraction process is a thorough initial consultation. During this appointment, patients are encouraged to be open and transparent about their full medical history. This includes any existing health conditions, current medications or supplements, and lifestyle factors that may impact the procedure or healing process. The consultation also provides an excellent opportunity for patients to address any concerns or anxieties. Asking questions and understanding the steps involved can help ease nerves and ensure you're fully informed before moving forward with surgery. We don’t do wisdom tooth extractions at this office. “The first step to wisdom teeth extraction begins with an initial consultation.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Wisdom Teeth Extraction in South Pasadena, CA What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Extraction Generally, wisdom teeth extraction begins with the doctor injecting the patient with a local anesthetic to numb them to the pain of the procedure. The doctor will then cut into the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone, making sure to remove any bone blocking access to the tooth root. Depending on how severely impacted the tooth is, the tooth may be divided into sections to be removed little by little. After extracting the tooth, the doctor will clean the extraction site of any debris. Afterward, the wound may or may not need stitches, and the doctor will pack gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding and to aid in the formation of a blood clot. “After extracting the tooth, the doctor will clean the extraction site of any debris.” Questions Answered on This Page Q. This could include replacing a filling, installing a temporary crown, or performing a root canal. An emergency dentist may be able to give you emergency advice over the phone. For example, If an adult tooth is knocked out of place, put it in milk and then get to a dentist as soon as possible. “Some damage or trauma to teeth may be an emergency that requires immediate restorative dental care.” Treating a Toothache or Abscess As WebMD explains, the type of treatment for a dental emergency depends on the patient's specific injury. While waiting for an appointment with their dentist, the injured individual may need basic first aid. The patient may need to wait for a call-back from the emergency dental practice outside regular office hours. For a severe toothache, rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water and remove any food particles gently with dental floss. Cold compresses can help with swelling and pain in the affected area. Do not place a painkiller such as aspirin against the painful tooth, as doing so can injure the gum tissue. However, taking acetaminophen orally can often control the pain associated with a toothache. Avoid aspirin, which can exacerbate bleeding. If an abscess develops on the gum tissue, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution a few times a day. Depending on the reason for the pain, the dentist may remove or repair the decayed tooth before prescribing an antibiotic to relieve the infection. “While waiting for an appointment with their dentist, the injured individual should perform basic first aid.” Chipped, Broken, and Missing Teeth For a broken or chipped tooth, save the pieces of the tooth if possible. Rinse the mouth completely with warm water and use clean gauze to slow bleeding. A cold compress can help with swelling or pain. The dentist will attempt to restore the broken tooth or recommend a crown or implant depending on the extent of the damage. This type of injury may require a root canal to repair damage to the tooth's pulp, leading to infection. The Oral Health Foundation recommends that if a tooth is completely knocked out in a fall, fight, or accident, hold it by the crown and rinse the root with warm water. Replace the tooth in the socket above the gum if possible. If it will not stay in place, save it in a small container of milk and see the dentist as soon as possible. Avoid handling the tooth when it is not necessary to do so. Patients have better chances of saving the lost tooth if they receive treatment within 60 minutes of the injury. “The dentist will attempt to restore the broken tooth or recommend a crown or implant depending on the extent of the damage.” Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Yelp: Emergency Dentist in South Pasadena, CA Treatments for Dental Emergencies Since there are many types of dental emergencies, treatment options vary. Furthermore, metal clasps, more common in dental bridges, can come loose or break off. Some dentures get damaged suddenly from an impact. The American Dental Association recommends dentures be evaluated by a professional when the prosthetic teeth are ill-fitting or damaged. We encourage patients to do the same if they misplace their dentures. Patients may find it beneficial to use denture adhesive to help get used to dentures.
