Welcome! I welcome you to St. Mary Star of the Sea, where we encounter Christ, work together to become Holy, and help each other get to Heaven! Contact Us Fr. Patrick Michaels Pastor Fr. Pat born in San Bernardino, California, on April 28, 1955 and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on December 4, 1982. He spent two years at St. Kevin Parish in San Francisco and another two years at St. Elizabeth Parish in San Francisco. He spent the next three and a half years at St. Gregory the Great Parish in San Mateo. Four and a half years were then spent at St. Timothy Parish in San Mateo. Fr. Pat was pastor at St. Raymond Church in Menlo Park for the past twelve and a half years. He has been pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for the past fifteen years and now joins Star of the Sea as our pastor. "Life is the source of the material I use in teaching and preaching. That is how I understand the word 'evangelization': our sharing of God’s ongoing revelation through his Word and our life experience. I also believe that 'faith' is a lifelong process of living by which our relationship with God develops." Father's interests lie significantly in the arts and how they give expression to deeper truths. He practices a variety of forms of art, from painting to cooking. Hiring Administrative Assistant New Paragraph Gwyneth Varn Finance Administrator Gwyneth is a retired (mostly) business professional with a long career in IT, finance, and nonprofit management. A big fan of lifelong learning, Gwyneth received her MBA in 2015 from Dominican University, where she also tutored accounting and related business courses. She continues to work with students to help them navigate the sometimes mind-numbing intricacies of accounting. She enjoys being part of the team at St. Mary Star of the Sea, working with Fr. Ginter, Jen, and the dedicated members of the Parish Finance Council to keep the Parish in good order as faithful stewards of the church’s financial resources. Gwyneth enjoys spending time in her garden, traveling, hiking, and camping. She also volunteers at the Redwood Empire Food Bank which serves thousands of Sonoma County individuals and families, helping to reduce food insecurity throughout the North Bay. Robin Olive Music Director Robin Olive, originally from England and has been involved in choir music as a talented musician all his life. He has performed as a guest organist with orchestras and has broadcast on live radio. Robin was responsible for replacing the church's original organ (upon its demise) with what some consider the finest organ of its type in Marin County. While his repertoire is not limited to a single musical instrument, his joy is to present the finest organ music possible. Heléna Tietze Cantor Heléna Tietze is a classically trained pianist, cellist, and vocalist. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Heléna grew up singing for the San Francisco Archdiocese and has participated in several local and national ensembles (such as the National Honors Choir and the National Orchestra Festival). She has attended the Kodály Summer Institute at Holy Names University in Oakland, California, and she completed her undergraduate studies in Music Therapy at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she served as principal cellist in both the symphony and chamber orchestras. Following board certification as a music therapist, Heléna went on to specialize in work with the end-of-life population. Heléna is passionate about helping others find community and meaning through music. St. Mary Star of the Sea, Pray for Us! Under the consecrated species of bread and wine Christ himself, living and glorious, is present in a true, real, and substantial manner: his Body and his Blood, with his soul and his divinity. (CCC 1413). The liturgical life of the Church revolves around the sacraments, with the Eucharist at the center (National Directory for Catechesis, #35). At Mass, we are fed by the Word and nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ. We believe that the Risen Jesus is truly and substantially present in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is not a sign or symbol of Jesus; rather we receive Jesus himself in and through the Eucharistic species. The priest, through the power of his ordination and the action of the Holy Spirit, transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus. This is call transubstantiation. When a man and a woman are married in the Church, they receive the grace needed for a lifelong bond of unity. Marriage is a Covenant The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenantal union in the image of the covenants between God and his people with Abraham and later with Moses at Mt. Sinai. This divine covenant can never be broken. In this way, marriage is a union that bonds spouses together during their entire lifetime. Contact Us at least 6 months before your desired wedding date. The Process - What to expect: Call or email the rectory to receive the general request form. Fill out the request and submit to us via mail or email. Fr. Pat will schedule a meeting with the couple. Obtain and review the Marriage Guidelines & Checklist. Submit your deposit. Schedule and attend classes - https://sfarchdiocese.org/requirements . Meet with Fr. Pat for other documents and arrangements. Mail Marriage Certificate to City Hall. Inquire about a wedding at St. Mary Star of the Sea Marriage Reflects the Holy Trinity The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the way to eternal life. (CCC 1661) The love in a married relationship is exemplified in the total gift of one’s self to another. It’s this self-giving and self-sacrificing love that we see in our other model of marriage, the relationship between Christ and the Church. Marriage is based on the consent of the contracting parties, that is, on their will to give themselves, each to the other, mutually and definitively, in order to live a covenant of faithful and fruitful love. (CCC 1662) The Church takes the lifelong nature of the Sacrament of Marriage seriously. The Church teaches that a break in this covenant teaches goes against the natural law of God: The remarriage of persons divorced from a living, lawful spouse contravenes the plan and law of God as taught by Christ. They are not separated from the Church, but they cannot receive Eucharistic communion. They will lead Christian lives especially by educating their children in the faith. (CCC 1665)aptism frees us from the bondage of original and actual sin. Water is poured in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Today, the sacrament of baptism is often performed on infants, shortly after birth. Adult baptisms take place at the Easter Vigil through the restored Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Adults or children who have been baptized in a valid Christian church are not baptized again in the Catholic church. As we say in the Nicene Creed, “I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins…” We believe that God exists in eternal communion. We believe that God exists in eternal communion. Together, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are united in one being with no beginning and no end. Human beings, likewise, were created by God in God’s image for the purpose of communion with another human being. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “The Christian family is a communion of persons, a sign and image of the communion of the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit” (CCC 2205). The Sacrament of Marriage is “unitive, indissoluble and calls us to be completely open to fertility.” Christian marriage at its finest is a reflection of God’s self-giving love expressed between the love of two people. The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. (CCC 1113) While we believe that human life is infused with the sacramental goodness of God, the Catholic Church has defined seven sacraments - instituted by and through the life of Jesus Christ. It is through the experience of the sacramental ritual that we are infused with God’s grace. The Sacraments nourish and strengthen us as they express and build up our faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that when the sick are anointed they should be "assisted by their pastor and the whole ecclesial community, which is invited to surround the sick in a special way through their prayers and fraternal attention" (650) 380-9874. "Like all the sacraments the Anointing of the Sick is a liturgical and communal celebration…It is very fitting to celebrate it within the Eucharist" (650) 380-9874. Schedule an Annointing Email your questions Healing and Comfort in the Time of Illness Who may Receive? In the Catholic Church, Extreme Unction or the Last Rites is the anointing at the time of death. Since the Second Vatican Council, this sacrament is now called the Anointing of the Sick and has been broadened to offer healing and comfort in times of illness that may not lead to immediate death. Speaking about a wider implementation of this sacrament, Pope Paul VI advocated for “a wider availability of the sacrament and to extend it—within reasonable limits—even beyond cases of mortal illness." Unlike the traditional understanding of the Last Rites, the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is, ideally, to be administered in a communal celebration. Spiritual Healing The healing that occurs in this sacrament of anointing is not necessarily physical healing. While we believe that physical healing can occur through the great power of God, the grace that is infused through this special sacrament is the reminder of the eternal presence of God in our human suffering. When the priest blessing the oil of anointing, he asks God to "send the power of your Holy Spirit, the Consoler, into this precious oil. Make this oil a remedy for all who are anointed with it; heal them in body, in soul and in spirit, and deliver them from every affliction" (Pastoral Care of the Sick, #123). "The celebration of the Anointing of the Sick consists essentially in the anointing of the forehead and hands of the sick person (in the Roman Rite) or of other parts of the body (in the Eastern rite), the anointing being accompanied by the liturgical prayer of the celebrant asking for the special grace of this sacrament" (CCC 1531) How to Prepare For Anointing of the Sick Spiritual Healing The healing that occurs in this sacrament of anointing is not necessarily physical healing. That is how I understand the word 'evangelization': our sharing of God’s ongoing revelation through his Word and our life experience. I also believe that 'faith' is a lifelong process of living by which our relationship with God develops." [email protected] What is RCIA? RCIA is a process of study, exploration, faith-sharing, and faith formation with specific liturgical rites for seekers and inquirers. Seekers and inquirers are non-baptized adults who desire to be fully initiated into the Roman Catholic Church and/or baptized adult Christians who desire full communion in the Roman Catholic Church. Adults or older children who have not been baptized and desire to join the Church are invited into the ancient celebration of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. During this process, which is marked by regular ritual acts, participants are introduced to the liturgy, the teachings, and the life of the Catholic Church. Adults or older children who were baptized in another Christian denomination prepare in a similar way for the sacraments of confirmation and the Eucharist during their reception into the Catholic Church. By the power of the Holy Spirit give to this water the grace of your Son, so that in the sacrament of baptism all those whom you have created in your likeness may be cleansed from sin and rise to a new birth of innocence by water and the Holy Spirit. Born in England in 1795, he became the first mate aboard the Orion which arrived in the Bay and anchored off what was to become Sausalito in 1822. William was 27 years old - and when the Orion left the Bay waters he 'jumped ship' and stayed behind. There are many legends and myths about William; but history does record that he had built the first dock in Sausalito and built a thriving business, transporting grain and hides. By 1870 there was a thriving British and Portuguese community in Sausalito and a Methodist Church was built in 1872 to serve the community. In 1877 there was an attempt to organize a Roman Catholic Parish, but the attempt failed. Four years passed before Archbishop Alemany created Sausalito's first Roman Catholic Parish and Mass was celebrated in a school house rented for the occasion. Fr. Patrick Cummins was appointed Pastor in 1881 and he named the Parish St. Mary's Star of the Sea. The first Catholic Church was built out of timber in 1881 and stood at Litho & Bonita Streets. In 1888 the first Holy Ghost Festival was held and signaled the faithful association of the Portuguese immigrants and their descendents with the Parish. Some of the most active men and women in the Catholic community came from this group of people. Adding also to the community were waves of Irish and Italian immigrants. Adding also to the community were waves of Irish and Italian immigrants. The town of Sausalito flourished and it was felt that a second Catholic Church was needed to serve the people; and so a second building called Holy Family Hall was completed in 1908. There was great excitement in Sausalito in December 1909, when a train pulled into Sausalito carrying special cargo bound for the Catholic Churches. Two bells cast in copper & tin in Missouri and tuned to the key of 'G' had arrived safely after being transported across country. The larger of the bells bearing the name 'Virginia' was installed in the first Catholic Church and the second smaller bell 'Edward' was installed outside Holy Family Hall. The bells were dedicated on December 12th 1909 by Fr. John Valenti and called the faithful to worship for the first time on Christmas Eve. All was well until September 1919 when a roaring fire swept through parts of Sausalito and destroyed many of the towns wooden buildings including Holy Family Hall. Fortunately, it had been thought for some time that the community would be served better by having one larger Catholic Church and construction on a new church on Bulkley Avenue was nearing completion when the fire broke out. The first Catholic church at Litho & Bonita Streets was closed and demolished in 1920 after only forty years of service to the community. Ground Breaking - 1959 The third Church served the faithful well but during World War II the population of Sausalito increased so much that a new church was needed to serve all those working in the Marin shipyards. The ground breaking ceremony for the present church on Harrison Avenue took place in 1954 and the church was completed and consecrated in 1959. Over the course of his ten years at Star of the Sea, Father Deitch’s dream of establishing a Catholic School was not realized but his significant efforts contributed to the establishment of Willow Creek Elementary school in Sausalito. In 2004, almost 100 years after they arrived by train, and after periods of being hung, stored, rescued and even neglected - the bells 'Virginia G' and 'Edward' were hoisted aloft and hung in the bell tower of the fourth and present Church - and once again call the Faith Community to worship. In 2014, the parish started a renewal of all deferred maintenance items. This had a happy effect of coinciding with an increase in ministry (for instance, as of January 2018, there were 130 youths in St. Mary Star of the Sea’s CYO program, whereas before 2014, there were none).
