Despite twenty years of community volunteering , Janis was uncertain about how to help, so she began by having her children interact with the children in the shelter: playing games, drawing, and reading. The children in the shelter were reluctant at first to participate, but Janis and her children continued to return each Sunday, slowly building relationships and trust. Parents living in shelters are so consumed and stressed with trying to find a way to make their lives work that they long for and welcome the opportunity to spend a few hours a week engaging in meaningful, shared activities with their children . At the same time, Sunday Friends' volunteer base was growing. Janis encouraged community members to lead activities and bring in new ideas. Sunday Friends became a place for volunteers to realize their own strengths and build on these skills while gaining a sense of awareness of the diversity in their community. By drawing on the amazing resources of the community, Sunday Friends evolved and further expanded its program offerings. Many of our long-term participants from the Lowell-based programs have stepped into leadership as we have opened new sites , welcoming in new families, showing them the ropes, and effectively role-modeling Sunday Friends' values. Her team surveyed 22 young children, 27 teens, and 68 parents who participate with Sunday Friends. In her conclusion to the final report, Dr. Gittens writes: “Overall, Sunday Friends has created an extraordinary sense of community among its attendees. Sunday Friends is having a strong positive effect on children and youth’s emotions, their attitudes about themselves and others, and their engagement with their family. The impact of Sunday Friends on the lives of children and teens is particularly noticeable in terms of the academic perceptions and aspirations espoused by the young participants. The tremendous consistency across the Youth and Adult surveys suggest that the Sunday Friends Program is overwhelmingly successful in meeting its desired outcomes. Sunday Friends’ community-building and financial literacy-oriented, working alternative to charity approach based on education is successful at fostering the developmental assets and achieving its goals to empower families.” The Year 2017 evaluation focused on measuring Sunday Friends’ success in instilling  “Developmental Assets” in children and in meeting our defined organizational outcomes: Sunday Friends' Three Primary Outcomes: OUTCOME #1 - Parent's Behavior Fosters Their Children's Healthy Development  OUTCOME #2 - Children Demonstrate Pro-Social and Pro-Education Attitudes and Behaviors  OUTCOME #3 - Family Members Understand and Practice Sound Financial Management Behaviors  Additional Sunday Friends Outcomes: In addition to Sunday Friends’ top three Program Outcomes listed above, we also extrapolate additional outcomes from the survey questions:  OUTCOME #4 - Violence Prevention  OUTCOME #5 - Stress Management  OUTCOME #6 - Health and Nutrition  OUTCOME #7 - Community Connectedness  OUTCOME #8 - Service-Orientation Impact for Volunteers   Click here to download the  Complete 2017 Evaluation Report.  Click here to view  Highlights from the 2017 Evaluation report.   The research team also extensively surveyed program volunteers. Click here to view the  Volunteer Report. 2016 In 2016, a Santa Clara University (SCU) research team led by Dr. Carol Ann Gittens, Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, analyzed extensive data collected in 2015 and 2016 through Sunday Friends programs. This evaluation had a special focus. The goal was to assess our program’s success in instilling  “Developmental Assets”  in children. The goal was guided by the research of  The Search Institute , which has demonstrated that 40 developmental assets - values and experiences - directly support and predict healthy youth development as well as success in school and in life. Examples of developmental assets (the ones that scored highest with Sunday Friends, in fact) are: Responsibility, Achievement Motivation, Self-Esteem, Planning and Decision Making, School Engagement, and Homework. The Search Institute has shown that 31 assets are sufficient to predict successful futures. The SCU Evaluation demonstrated that Sunday Friends is effectively imparting 38 out of the 40. In her conclusion, Dr. Gittens wrote:   “The results from the 2016 Supplemental Parent Survey revealed that the Sunday Friends Program has tremendous positive impact across the many internal and external domains – known as assets - recognized by the Search Institute as being vital for a child’s well-being and development. Through our unique Learn & Earn Model, you have the agency to choose from a variety of learning activities that interest you the most, such as parenting classes, job skills training, nutrition classes, digital skills and financial education workshops, and much more! We have virtual online classes and workshops through Zoom, in English and Spanish, that are flexible and accommodating to your family's busy schedule. If you have difficulty getting online, our staff will guide you step-by-step to provide you with the tools and access to participate in our online education. If our Zoom classes do not work for your schedule, you'll be able to participate in our in-person Community Days on Sundays. The program is designed to be flexible and adaptable to the needs of each family. You can participate at your own pace, choose the level of support you need, and engage in activities that you find most helpful while building a community of support. Your family will be able to earn participation points for most of the activities that you participate in, and these points will add up to different membership levels with increasing benefits. Join us for our annual Holiday Shopping Spree ! History of the Holiday Shopping Spree: Started in 2003, the Holiday Shopping Spree (HSS) was created to stock our store with gifts for the holidays. This tradition, which was paused from 2019-2023, provided families an opportunity to create meaningful holiday memories. Children, rewarded for their participation in our educational programs, can proudly choose gifts for their parents. Parents, in turn, can select presents for their children with confidence, knowing they've earned them through hard work and achievement. The Holiday Shopping Spree is one of the key parts of our Learn. Serve. Earn. model , serving as one of the major rewards families receive for their active participation all year long. For those of you who are new to HSS , here’s the process: Assemble a team (at least 2 people) Name your team Fundraise : Set a fundraising goal, as high as you are comfortable with, per person Gather with us at Target on December 5th, between 5 & 8 PM (Note: Once your team is created, we’ll email you a form where you can choose your mission and let us know your preferred arrival time. Times are staggered to keep the event running smoothly.) Get assigned a mission : (baby toys, boy/girls’ toys, gifts for teens, gifts for mom & dad) Search the store for the best gifts Meet back at the registers to check out and award prizes All year, Sunday Friends families have been hard at work in classes and activities, developing their skills, equipping themselves to achieve economic mobility. While participating in these opportunities, families receive basic necessities and other goodies throughout the year, but the holidays can be extra challenging .  The Holiday Shopping Spree is an opportunity for you to partner with us to put Kindness Into Action this holiday season and recognize the consistent self-improvement and learning that families are diligently investing in at Sunday Friends. In 1997, she answered a “Call to Action,” conceptualizing the Sunday Friends model—a program built on self-respect, where pride stems from work and community service, not handouts. Janis, with her extensive experience leading projects at Intel and Apple, turned her focus to community service, from suicide prevention to inner-city programs. She transitioned from Silicon Valley boardrooms to addressing the stark realities of struggling families. Janis, her children, and friends began by visiting a local family shelter. This wasn’t a one-off act of charity. Janis and her dedicated team of volunteers spent years listening to the shelter families’ needs, building relationships based on trust, and a genuine desire to uplift. Sunday Friends grew slowly and organically, fueled by a shared vision. The program fosters self-respect and pride, allowing families to contribute and learn, with thank you letters as bridges for giving back. Literacy and computer skills programs, fresh produce distribution, and the “Sunday Friends Bank” for financial literacy empower families to break the cycle of poverty. This initiative is about more than survival—it’s about empowerment. Janis’ dedication saw young mothers land jobs and families rise from despair, fueling her passion for years. Even after her retirement in 2019, Sunday Friends thrives as a vibrant community, a testament to her vision, and the countless volunteers who found purpose within its walls. Janis’ legacy is a reminder that we are all connected, and that small acts of kindness can blossom into extraordinary change. Intergenerational Sunday Friends is Family Centric and focuses on the whole family—parents and youth together. Economic Mobility Families are making gains in financial security, financial capability, and overall family well-being. IMPACT & OUTCOMES Metrics : These 5 outcomes will demonstrate the impact Sunday Friends is making to empower families to break the generational cycle of poverty. METRIC 1 - ASSET BUILDING Families will realize an increase in financial assets. METRIC 2 - DEBT REDUCTION Families will realize a decrease in family debt and an increase in credit scores. METRIC 3 - INCOME GENERATION Families will realize an increase in household income. METRIC 4 - CONFIDENCE BUILDING Families will gain confidence in making sound financial decisions. METRIC 5 - EMPOWERMENT Families will feel empowered to advocate for the needs of their family. PROGRAM INITIATIVES Strategic Inititives : These 3 strategic initiatives define the program infrastructure for increasing economic mobility. Initiative 1: FINANCIAL LITERACY A Comprehensive Financial Literacy program to help families build financial security & financial capability. Key activities include: Multi-part Series Workshops, Individual Coaching Youth Activities Designed to equip families to make informed financial decisions and take on proactive behaviors that lead to intergenerational economic mobility. Initiative 2: LIFE SKILLS A Life Skills program to help families gain capacity and resources towards intergenerational economic mobility. Key topics include: Digital Skills Job Readiness & Small Business Development Communications Confidence Health & Wellness Youth STEM Youth Literacy Initiative 3: COMMUNITY & EMPOWERMENT A Community-Building & Empowerment program to help families advocate for themselves, to gain confidence as a voice in their community, and to feel valued. Activities include: Learning Series focused on Advocacy as a form of Empowerment Community-Building Events Workshops focused on empowering Community Building & accessing Community Resources BACKGROUND In 2021, The board and staff at Sunday Friends set out to develop a strategic plan to guide our mission over the next three to five years by sharpening our program focus. We evaluated our strengths, successes, values, and the needs of our community. We also took stock of the gains we have achieved through our digital pivot in response to the pandemic. Our objective was to build upon those strengths and values to focus our program on activities that would provide measurable results towards shifting the needle on poverty, and would make positive and significant impact in the lives of the families we support.
