It is located on Grand Avenue in Oakland, CA, near the Grand Lake Theatre and the Lake Merritt estuary. Most of the piano bars in the area closed decades ago, but The Alley is very much alive. The bar is part saloon, part 1920's alley, a design the East Bay Express once described as “Dashiell Hammet in Disneyland.” Complete with wood shingles, telephone wires, and windows in the interior, and graced by the silhouette of a busty dame above one rooftop as well as a fake pawn shop along the back wall, The Alley’s interior is a snapshot frozen in a time of constant change. Cozy booths fitted throughout the venue are similar to those found at a diner, and the walls are bedecked with approximately 40,000 to 50,000 business cards stapled up by visitors from all over the world for decades. Business cards from Jerry Brown, Gregg Allman and more can be found. The grand piano is located past the main bar, topped by a lacquered wood table. Twelve seats fit around the bar and a pianist sits on the far end. Songbooks and microphones also rest on the bar. Regulars primarily sing songs from the Great American Songbook, with the lyrics of many tunes stored in binders for any singers who need them, but more contemporary songs are also now played. Since the 1950s to the present, participating singers perch around the piano to await their turn to sing along with the resident piano player (or guitar player) for the evening. From 1959 to 2017, the Alley's resident piano player was the legendary Rod Dibble, whose 4000+ song repertoire was built from the Great American Songbook, comprising the Tin Pan Alley tunes and Broadway hits that have become jazz standards. The tradition continues today, with singers keeping alive classics by Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, and more, while more contemporary songs are available upon request. Dinner is served nightly from 6 to 9:30 and focuses on simple and classic American fare, featuring hamburgers, cornmeal crusted fried chicken, and an award-winning steak. The Alley has featured in travel and restaurant guides to Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area. The GrassRoutes Travel Guide to Oakland: The Soul of the City Next Door describes The Alley as "an old-time alternative to karaoke" representing "Oakland at its friendliest." The bar attracts "a wacky mix of hams and crooners", says the Lonely Planet Guide, reporting that there are no beers on draft but the mixed drinks are "strooooong." Rough Guides listed The Alley as a bar in 2003 then as a live music venue in 2011. A guide to dive bars in the San Francisco Bay Area listed The Alley among five of Oakland's dive bars, the group including Smitty's, a local bar several doors up the street from The Alley. The Alley has been designed a Heritage Property by The City Of Oakland. See the full Report describing the fascinating history of the Alley in this document . He later pursued a degree in engineering and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area soon after graduation. In this new environment, Bryan began honing his skills as a pianist, keyboardist, and accompanist, gaining a reputation for his versatility and emotive sensitivity. From pop and jazz, to Irish and folk, Bryan’s musical heart dances to a myriad of beats and styles. Bryan's American odyssey in music commenced in touring alongside the renowned Irish vocal ensemble, The Black Brothers. This engagement not only solidified a decade-long tenure as their pianist but also allowed him to connect deeply with his own Irish heritage. In 2006, Bryan co-founded the Bay Area cover band, The Peelers , known for their innovative "Top 40 Mash-ups and Medleys". Their charisma and unique non-stop dance music won them fans and accolades, including being named the "Best Cover Bay Area Band" by Metro magazine. This exposure led to a 14-month weekly headlining residency at the Red Rock Casino Resort in Las Vegas in 2012. From 2016 onwards, Bryan's passion as a piano accompanist found its weekly expression at the iconic Alley Piano Bar in Oakland every Thursday and Saturday evening. His community-building musicianship was recognized by The Battery Club in San Francisco and was hired as an Artist-In-Residence. In 2021, Bryan was pivotal in keeping the Alley community together by organizing a virtual piano bar online that promoted community through sharing of music on Zoom calls twice a week. He also spear-headed and managed the GoFundMe campaign to “Save The Alley” that raised $95,000 that provided a financial bridge for The Alley Piano Bar through its closure of the pandemic. Bryan Seet's musical journey is a testament to passion, adaptability, and continuous growth and the belief in the importance of community, creativity, and the arts. JEF LABES Pianist Jef Labes is a seasoned keyboardist and pianist known for his versatility and exceptional talent. Over the years, he has collaborated with a variety of renowned artists and played an instrumental role in bringing numerous projects to life. Perhaps best recognized for his collaboration with Van Morrison, Labes' keyboard prowess can be heard on several of Morrison's albums. Throughout his career, Jef has displayed an uncanny ability to seamlessly blend into various genres, from rock and pop to jazz and blues. In addition to his work with Morrison, Labes has collaborated with a plethora of artists, enriching their sound with his distinctive keyboard style. Beyond performing, he is also a skilled arranger and songwriter. Jef's dedication to his craft and his passion for music have made him a sought-after musician in the industry, and his contributions have left an indelible mark on the albums and projects he has been a part of. PAUL HLEBCAR Guitarist Paul Hlebcar has been a San Francisco Bay Area musician and bandleader for over twenty years. His experience and skill in performance, as well as expertise in client relations, has made him a valuable commodity. He plays both acoustic and electric guitar, not to mention a "mean" harmonica. As the leader of the seven-piece R&B band, The Desotos, Paul has played many large and small venues, including: the Fillmore Auditorium (opening for Tower of Power), the San Francisco Giants' Stadium (where The Desotos sang the National Anthem three times), and numerous wedding and corporate event locations throughout the Bay Area.In previous years, many famous musicians have sat-in with The Desotos: Eddie Money, Joshua Redman, Frankie Avalon. And, a few years ago they did a show as the back-up band for Bo Diddley. Today, they continue to entertain and delight. Paul's other love is a quieter, "unplugged" sound, which goes back to his roots (he began his career playing folk music). Lately, he has been performing regularly in smaller, more intimate settings, usually in solo, duo or trio form. His warmth and personality come across well at these gigs. He sometimes adds drums, bass, and piano for a fuller sound. Raised in Berkeley, Dibble started playing piano in 1938 when he was six years of age and performed at The Alley starting in 1960. For 50 years, Dibble performed nightly at the bar from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Knowing more than 4,000 songs by heart, he would accompany singers through key changes and rhythm variations based on the participating singer. When the microphone made its full circle around the piano and back to him, he would take his turn, singing anything from “Deep Purple” to “Blue Light Boogie” to “Hard Hearted Hannah” in his signature voice, which San Francisco Chronicle writer Peter Hartlaub described as a mix of "Louis Armstrong and Tom Waits on the raspy spectrum." Over the decades, Rod Dibble helped thousands of people who didn’t even think they could carry a tune become joyful, full-voiced singers. To make new singers feel comfortable and valued, he would ring a small bell in honor of the “Alley virgin’s” first song, regardless of whether the singer performed it well. For returning singers, he would have his ears open for their progress, and ring a large cowbell when someone dispatched a “personal best.” He would move the key of a song up or down as someone’s voice improved with practice, helping them show off their new chops. Rod’s approval of your singing could send an Alley patron floating down Grand Avenue, feeling loved and accomplished. When asked if he would ever retire, Dibble said, "I'll never retire, I'll be very happy to die right behind this piano here." He didn’t quite get his wish--the floorboards of The Alley were too difficult for him to navigate nightly in his final months. But he continued to play and sing in his home as his health declined, accompanying his wife Linda and having friends over for singing salons. Rodney Dibble passed away December 18th, 2017. We will always remember Rod as the pianist who kept the spirit of The Alley going for 50+ years. Thank you, Rod, for encouraging thousands of people to sing, and making The Alley a place that changed lives. JENNIFER DAVIS Long-Time Bartender Jennifer Davis - Long-Time Alley Bartender By Rachel Howard Patrons of Oakland’s Alley Piano Bar are mourning longtime server and bartender Jennifer “Jen” Davis, who was always quick to swing aside her long ponytail and listen to a friend’s troubles, or pop over to the piano to sing “I’m an Old Cowhand” in her husky, joy-filled voice. Jen died January 15, 2026, in San Francisco. As the Alley staff wrote on the bar’s Facebook page, “Jen was a familiar face to so many of us - warm, sharp, feisty, hilarious, and steady behind the bar. She helped make our nights feel like home, and she’ll be deeply missed.”Jen was born June 29, 1958 in the East Bay, one of four adopted children who grew up in San Jose, where her father worked for General Electric and her mother was a devoted homemaker. The family often went on skiing adventures to the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Jen’s younger sister Lisa Zahn Davis remembers Jen as “quite the daredevil.” After the family moved to suburban Almaden, according to her sister, Jen would sneak out at night to a pasture where she would jump on horses bareback, riding them with a hackamore she’d fashioned from rope. With her waist-length brown hair and large, soulful eyes, Jen was “so beautiful, too doggone smart for her own good, and not afraid of anything,” her sister said.In 1972, Jen’s parents moved Jen and her two sisters to Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, where the girls had their own horses. Jen was physically graceful and blessed with a photographic memory; subjects like math and physics came easily to her. She craved adventure, and upon graduating high school, she moved to Memphis. But in 1981, the family came back to California, and Jen moved back to the Bay Area with them. Eventually she settled just down the street from the Alley at 180 Grand Ave., where she lived for 25 years. Jackie Simpkins, the Alley’s owner, remembers first meeting her sometime in 1999 or 2000. “One night Jen came in and was writing a letter to a boyfriend, and she stayed and we talked for hours,” Jackie recalled. “She kept coming back. Finally she told me she needed a job, and I hired her as a server. She was a waitress for a long time before she became a bartender. She was so bubbly. She was very dependable. She was one of the best servers I ever had.” In addition to pouring a great cocktail, Jen had a talent for connecting with just about everyone who walked in. As Jackie recalled, “Some of the customers told me she was basically their therapist.”Jen’s life to that point had been challenging, but her sister Lisa remembers that right around the time Jen started working for the Alley, she changed. “Suddenly she had so much empathy and compassion,” Lisa said. “She said a funny thing to me. She told me she had gotten a ‘drop-in soul’. She started studying on her own, theories about physics, and she would write incredible poems.”One of Jen’s fans was legendary Alley pianist Rod Dibble. Before his death in 2017, Rod would regularly wave Jen over to the piano. Singing George and Ira Gershwin’s “They All Laughed,” Jen’s hearty alto would belt out “ha ha ha, who’s got the last laugh now?”, always to uproarious applause. Jen was captured on film in a short documentary by Katherine Gorringe, “The Last Piano Bar,” in which Jen says: “Someday the end of the world will come, but if I’m in the Alley when that happens, things could be worse than that.” Jen, you will always be with your piano bar family in the Alley, where your welcoming kindness will never be forgotten.
