Our goal is to catch any oral health issues early, to ensure that we can find a solution sooner rather than later. However, for those patients who have experienced a root canal, surgical extraction, or have recently had a filling, implant, crown, or bridge placed, there are recommendations you should follow. List of Services Diet If you are enjoying a sugary or starchy snack during the day, it is more than likely that your teeth and gums are being exposed to decay-causing elements. If you do consume these things, we recommend brushing and flossing your teeth after they are consumed or try and stay away from them altogether. In most cases, a soft diet is recommended for the first 48-hours after your procedure and to chew on the other side of your mouth and avoid hard and sticky foods. Also avoid foods that break into small pieces when you chew them, such as raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and popcorn. It is important to note that there may be sensitivity to hot and/or cold, pressure, and swelling after a dental procedure. In most cases, any discomfort will subside dramatically within the first 24-48-hours. Item Link Pain Relief After a major procedure, most discomfort can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Pain medications work best when taken before the pain reaches its worst. Pain medications should be taken on a schedule and never more than the recommended dose. An acute or persistent toothache is common with most orthodontic treatment, however, another cause of toothache is decay. Decay is a bacterial infection that can spread through many parts of the tooth, and even into the gum tissue. Sometimes, a toothache indicates that you may need root canal treatment — a procedure that not only relieves the discomfort but can also keep your tooth from needing to be extracted. Other times, the discomfort may be caused by a loose filling or by a crack. The only way to know for sure what is causing your toothache is to make an appointment with us. Avoid using straws, spitting, vigorous swishing of fluids, and smoking, as all these activities can interfere with the healing process. Item Link Proper Care When brushing, we recommend using a soft-bristle toothbrush as it is gentler on your teeth and gums. As for toothpaste, this depends on your oral health as there are different toothpaste recommendations depending on your individual needs. If you are curious about which toothbrush or toothpaste is best for you, please call our practice to setup an appointment. Your gums may be tender around the tooth that has been worked on. Keeping your gums clean with gentle flossing, brushing, and rinsing with warm saltwater (1/2 tsp of regular table salt in 8oz of warm water) will help your gums recover more quickly. Bad breath, also called halitosis, can be embarrassing, especially around your loved ones or in a business meeting. It is no wonder that store shelves are overflowing with gum, mints, mouthwashes, and other products designed to fight bad breath and keep our mouths feeling fresh. However, many of these products are temporary measures and do not address the cause of bad breath directly. Certain foods, health conditions, and oral habits are among the causes of bad breath. In many cases, you can improve your breath with consistent proper oral care. If simple self-care techniques do not solve the issue, you need to book an appointment with our office as there may be an underlying cause. Bad breath odors vary depending on the source or the underlying cause. While most patients tend to only have a mild case of bad breath that can be fixed with a proper oral care regimen at home, there are cases which require a dental professional to intervene. While it is important to check all concerns with our office, just to be safe, here are the main causes of bad breath: Food | The breakdown of food particles in and around your teeth can increase bacteria and cause a foul odor. Eating certain foods, such as onions, garlic, and certain spices can cause bad breath. After you digest these foods, they enter your bloodstream, are carried to your lungs, and affect your breath. Tobacco | Smoking causes its own unpleasant mouth odor. Smokers and oral tobacco users are also more likely to have gum disease, another source of bad breath. Dental Hygiene | If you do not floss and brush at least twice daily, food particles remain in your mouth, causing bad breath. A colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) forms on your teeth. If it is not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums and eventually form plaque-filled pockets between your teeth and gums (periodontitis). Your tongue can also trap bacteria that produces odors. Dentures that are not cleaned regularly can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles as well. Dry Mouth | Saliva helps cleanse our mouths, removing particles that cause odors. A condition called dry mouth, or xerostomia, can contribute to bad breath because the production of saliva is decreased. Dry mouth naturally occurs during sleep, leading to "morning breath," and it worsens if you sleep with your mouth open. Chronic dry mouth can be caused by your salivary glands or other medical diseases. Medications | Some medications can indirectly produce bad breath by contributing to dry mouth, while others are broken down in our body to release chemicals that are carried on our breath. Infections | Bad breath can be caused by surgical wounds after oral surgery, such as a tooth removal, or because of tooth decay, gum disease, or mouth sores. Mouth, Nose, and Throat Conditions | Bad breath can occasionally stem from small stones that form in our tonsils and are covered with bacteria, as well as from infections or chronic inflammation in our nose, sinuses, or throat. Other Causes | Diseases, such as some cancers, and conditions such as metabolic disorders, can cause a distinctive odor because of chemicals they produce. Chronic reflux of stomach acids (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) is also associated with bad breath. Some patients worry about their breath even though they have little or no mouth odor, while others have bad breath and do not realize it. Because it is difficult to assess how your own breath smells, ask a close friend or relative to confirm if you suspect you may have bad breath. If you have bad breath, review your oral hygiene habits. Try making lifestyle changes, such as brushing your teeth and tongue after eating, using dental floss, and drinking plenty of water. If your bad breath persists, call our office. Freshen Your Breath, Restore Confidence Persistent bad breath can signal an underlying dental issue. At South Lake Dental , our caring Pasadena dental team identifies the cause and provides effective treatments for lasting freshness. Enjoy renewed confidence with personalized care for bad breath , dry mouth , and oral hygiene concerns. Book an Appointment Book Appointment Online We are the Pasadena dentist near you! How you feel about your teeth impacts how often you smile. If you feel embarrassed about stains on your teeth, you might find yourself smiling less frequently. The way our patients' feel about their smiles matters greatly to us. A common issue we often address at our dental practice is tooth discoloration, which can range from subtle yellowing to pronounced shades of brown or gray, all of which impact your confidence and willingness to smile. Our experience dental team will speak with you during your consultation to see which treatment option may be right for you. Stained teeth refer to teeth that have changed in color from their natural shade, due to various external or internal factors. This discoloration can manifest as yellow, brown, or gray. Stains can occur on the surface of the tooth (extrinsic stains) or within the tooth structure itself (intrinsic stains). Extrinsic Stains Surface Stains | These are caused by external factors that often affect the outer layer of the tooth (enamel). Common causes include the consumption of pigmented foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, tomato-based sauces, and certain spices. Smoking or using tobacco products can also lead to extrinsic stains due to tar and nicotine. Poor Oral Hygiene | Inadequate flossing and brushing can result in the accumulation of plaque on your teeth. Plaque, when not removed regularly, can harden into tartar, which can cause surface discoloration that contributes to staining. Intrinsic Stains Medication | Some medications, particularly certain antibiotics such as tetracycline, when taken during childhood, can cause intrinsic stains. These stains occur within the tooth's structure, making the stains more challenging to remove through regular cleaning. Trauma or Injury | Physical trauma to a tooth, such as a fall or impact, can cause intrinsic discoloration. This is because the tooth may react to the injury by laying down more dentin (the inner layer of the tooth beneath the enamel), which can darken the color of the tooth. Aging | Over time, the enamel of our teeth can wear away, revealing more of the yellowish dentin underneath. This natural process makes teeth appear more stained or discolored as we age. Prevention and Treatment For Stained Teeth Preventing stained teeth involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices, regular dental check-ups, and minimizing the consumption of staining foods and beverages. Professional dental cleanings can help remove surface stains, but if the stains on your teeth are deeper, treatments such as whitening , veneers (thin shells placed over the front of teeth), or crowns (caps that cover the entire tooth) may be recommended by our dentist to improve your tooth color. Maintaining a bright, healthy smile involves a combination of proactive measures and professional guidance to prevent and address stained teeth effectively. Understanding the specific cause and type of staining is vital for determining the most suitable treatment plan. Consulting our dentist allows us to create a personalized assessment and recommendation based on your individual needs for any current stains you have on your teeth and to help prevent future staining. Brighten Your Smile with Confidence Say goodbye to stains and discoloration with expert dental Pasadena care at South Lake Dental . Our experienced team offers personalized treatments, from professional whitening to veneers and crowns, helping you achieve a radiant, lasting smile you’ll love to show off. We are dedicated to helping our patients find a solution for their needs, regardless of the state of their oral health. A full mouth reconstruction is a personalized treatment plan that combines several procedures to restore your oral health and function. The process may include procedures such as dental implants, crowns, and orthodontics. Our team is passionate about working with you to improve your smile, bite, and quality of life. A full mouth reconstruction is focused first and foremost on your oral health. Once your main oral concerns are addressed, we can provide cosmetic procedures to help improve the appearance of your smile, including porcelain veneers or teeth whitening. Full mouth reconstruction is typically recommended for patients with: missing teeth, substantial decay, excessive wear, chipped or cracked teeth, periodontitis, or severe misalignment. Full mouth reconstruction can also help treat bruxism (teeth grinding) and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). During your consultation, we create a personalized treatment plan to help improve your smile. Addressing fundamental dental issues offers three key benefits:  Recovered Oral Health | By succinctly treating concerns such as gum disease, decay, or tooth issues, your oral health can be significantly improved in a short period of time. This will not only enhance your day-to-day life, but it benefits you in the future as well. Undergoing a full mouth reconstruction can significantly reduce your need for future dental procedures. Improved Function | Missing or broken teeth can make it difficult to chew, causing you to rely on one side of your mouth, or to eliminate certain foods from your diet altogether. These issues can also affect enunciation, preventing you from speaking clearly. By restoring affected teeth, these functions can be alleviated. Increased Self-Confidence | By fixing broken, chipped, and cracked teeth, the appearance of your smile will improve. When restoring compromised teeth, we use high-quality, natural-looking prosthetics for outstanding results.  Your oral health is our priority. When planning your full mouth reconstruction, we make recommendations based on the information gathered during your consultation. Once we have established your oral health concerns that need to be addressed, we provide you with a treatment plan tailored to your needs, budget, and goals. With a focus on biological dentistry, we only recommend procedures we feel are in your best interests for your overall health. Feeling comfortable and confident in your smile will undoubtedly have a positive impact on your life. Typically, patients can expect this process to take several months. However, the timeline for your treatment plan may take longer depending on your specific oral concerns and the procedures needing to be performed, which may include: dental implants, root canal therapy, gum rejuvenation, orthodontics, periodontal care, dental crowns, or a variety of cosmetic procedures. You will typically return for two follow-up appointments that will occur one week and one month after your procedures are complete. This way, we can ensure everything looks and functions as it should. Rebuild Your Smile, Renew Your Confidence Transform your oral health and appearance with a full mouth reconstruction in Pasadena at South Lake Dental . Our experienced team combines advanced restorative and cosmetic treatments, like dental implants , crowns, and veneers, to restore comfort, function, and confidence for a truly life-changing smile. Proper oral care from home helps keep any potentially harmful oral diseases at bay and provides our dental team with the advantage of treating those issues in their early stages. Here are a few tips to develop a constructive at home oral health care routine. List of Services Floss Flossing removes plaque from the areas between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. If that plaque remains, it often leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Be certain that you floss at least twice per day because a toothbrush, on its own, will only achieve so much for your oral hygiene and health. It is also important to floss after eating any meal or snack to ensure you remove any food particles between your teeth before they have a chance to develop into a more serious oral health condition. Item Link Fluoride Toothpaste Fluoride is successful at preventing cavities and repairing tooth enamel, a fact that has consistently been solidified by scientific research. A naturally occurring element, fluoride is completely safe when it is properly utilized. Parents are urged to only use a smear of toothpaste on a toothbrush for babies and children younger than the age of three, and a pea-sized dab for children ages three to six. Item Link Toothbrush and Brushing A soft-bristled toothbrush, with a head that is small enough to comfortably reach all your teeth, is recommended. With it, you will get a thorough cleaning and avoid the abrasion that often comes with a medium or hard-bristled toothbrush. You should also change your toothbrush when the bristles begin wear down or soften, which is generally after three months of use. Gently brush at a 45-degree angle against the gumline with a short, circular motion. Brushing too frequently, or with excess force, can cause gum recession and harm the root surfaces of your teeth, abrading them in the process. Your roots, when exposed, are at a greater risk of decay and might become quite sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. These surfaces are not covered by ultra-hard enamel that protects the crown of your teeth above the gumline, so they tend to wear faster. Brush moderately twice per day for about two minutes on each occasion since it does not require too much effort to remove trapped food particles and bacteria plaque. Item Link List Item 1 Mouthwash Mouthwash, when used daily and for the advised amount of time that is printed on the bottle, can greatly reduce plaque and gingivitis. A mouthwash with alcohol might cause irritation, but you can always switch to one without it. Item Link Drink Water A moist mouth is crucial for all patients since mouth dryness increases plaque accumulation and your risk of both tooth decay and gum disease. Tobacco products, alcohol, caffeine, and certain over-the-counter prescription medications help contribute to mouth dryness. Drinking water is important because it keeps you hydrated and provides several health benefits for your body. Within your mouth, it keeps sensitive areas moist and stimulates the healthy movement of saliva. Your saliva buffers acids, helps digestion, assists the mouth in thwarting germs, and safeguards your teeth from decay. Item Link Avoid Sugary Snacking and Acidic Beverages Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of both children and adults, despite being almost completely preventable. Sugars are consumed by oral bacteria and then release acids that attack our teeth, producing tooth decay and cavities. Consuming less sugar is beneficial for your teeth, but, if you cannot eliminate these snacks from your diet altogether, limit them to mealtimes a couple days a week. This allows your saliva an opportunity to better neutralize and diminish the acids when consumed. Acids soften the hard enamel that covers your teeth by dissolving the outer layers, giving your teeth a gritty feel. Soda, sports drinks, and juices dissolve calcium out of the surface enamel through a process known as de-mineralization. Because saliva is rich in minerals, it has a natural neutralizing and buffering capability that will re-mineralize enamel surfaces impacted by acid. This is why it is important to steer clear of these drinks, and instead drink plenty of water. Item Link Understand Poor Oral Health Habits Aside from sugar intake, there are a few other detrimental oral health habits that you should be aware of, including the use of tobacco products, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, and chewing on your fingernails, pencils, pens, or bottle caps. Understanding the effects of these tendencies, all of which have negative ramifications on your overall oral health, will assist you in avoiding them. Another example is an oral piercing, as it increases your chances of experiencing gum pain or a chipped tooth. A clenching or grinding habit can also harm your teeth, jaw joints, and muscles, particularly during your sleep. Item Link Book Appointment Online We are the Pasadena dentist near you! However, as adults our mouths are only designed to hold 28 teeth, each tooth having a specific name and function. The teeth in the front of our mouths (incisors, canine, and bicuspid teeth) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces. The back teeth (molars) are used to grind food up into a consistency suitable for swallowing. After our molars are our wisdom teeth, and for most of the population, they are an issue and serve no benefit. For most patients, they do not have enough space in their mouths for a new tooth to properly erupt without disturbing their surrounding teeth. Before these wisdom teeth start to develop into an issue though, we take a preventive measure and have them removed. Typically, this removal is done under sedation, so you will not feel a thing. For those patients who choose to keep their wisdom teeth and not take the preventive measure of having them removed, there could be several issues, including their wisdom teeth growing in sideways, having them only partially erupted, or even remain trapped beneath the gum line and bone, which can be especially painful as they can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to successfully erupt. When wisdom teeth are partially erupted, the opening around them allows bacteria to grow and will eventually cause an infection. The result: swelling, stiffness, pain, and illness. The pressure from the erupting wisdom teeth may start moving your other teeth and disrupt any orthodontic or natural alignment of your teeth. The most serious oral issues occur when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom teeth. Removal of the impacted teeth usually resolves these issues. Early removal is recommended to decrease the likelihood of wisdom tooth complications. Between 14-16-years old, most patients will have the conversation about their wisdom teeth with either their dentist, orthodontist, or by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. With an oral examination and x-rays of your mouth, our dentist can evaluate the position of your wisdom teeth and predict if there are any issues present now or may develop in the future. In most cases, the removal of your wisdom teeth is performed under local anesthesia, laughing gas (nitrous oxide), or general anesthesia. These options, as well as the surgical risks (i.e., sensory nerve damage, sinus complications), are discussed with you before the procedure is performed. Before a tooth is removed, we need to evaluate your current oral health. Please keep in mind that if an extraction is required, it is for the benefit of your overall oral health. Safe, Comfortable Wisdom Teeth Removal Protect your smile with expert wisdom teeth removal in Pasadena at South Lake Dental . Our experienced team provides gentle extractions under sedation to prevent pain, infection, and crowding, ensuring a smooth recovery and lasting oral health. Cavities are caused by oral bacteria, sugary diets, and inadequate oral hygiene. A comprehensive treatment plan is pivotal for sustaining oral wellness. Our dental practice is committed to aiding patients in crafting effective oral health routines to ensure their mouths are clear of cavities and other oral health issues. By understanding the origins of cavities and implementing proper oral hygiene habits, patients can significantly reduce their risk of dental decay. Our goal is to empower patients with the knowledge and guidance needed to proactively maintain good oral health and prevent potential oral health issues. Cavities and Dental Decay Cavities are the result of a combination of factors primarily influenced by oral hygiene, dietary habits, and bacterial activity within the mouth. Understanding these contributing causes is fundamental in preventing cavity formation and maintaining good oral health. One of the causes of cavities is bacteria. The human mouth hosts numerous types of bacteria, some of which form a sticky biofilm called plaque, which forms on tooth surfaces. These bacteria thrive on sugars and carbohydrates from food remnants left in the mouth after eating. As bacteria feed on these sugars, they produce acids that can erode the protective enamel layer of teeth, leading to cavity formation. Diet is the next most common cause in cavity development. Frequent consumption of sugary or acidic foods and beverages heightens the risk. Sugary treats, sodas, candies, and even natural sugars found in fruits can feed the bacteria in our mouth, promoting acid production and enamel erosion. Acidic foods and drinks can directly weaken enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay. Inadequate oral hygiene practices significantly contribute to cavities. Poor flossing and brushing habits allow plaque to accumulate on your teeth, providing a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. When plaque is not regularly removed, it hardens into tartar, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease. Conditions that lead to reduced saliva production, such as certain medications, medical treatments, or health issues, can contribute to cavity formation. Saliva plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids in the mouth and aiding in the remineralization of enamel. Reduced saliva flow diminishes the mouth's natural defense mechanism against cavities. Overall, a combination of factors including bacterial presence, dietary choices high in sugars and acids, inadequate oral hygiene, and reduced saliva flow collectively contribute to the development of cavities. Preventive measures targeting these causes are pivotal in maintaining optimal oral health and preventing dental decay. Regular flossing, brushing, a balanced diet, and routine dental check-ups are essential in preventing cavities and preserving a healthy smile. Types and Symptoms of Dental Cavities Cavities and dental decay can exhibit various symptoms, often indicating different stages of progression. Recognizing these signs is crucial in seeking timely dental care to prevent further deterioration. Common symptoms associated with cavities and dental decay include toothaches, tooth sensitivity, visible holes or pits, visible discoloration, pain while chewing, halitosis (bad breath), or pus around the tooth. Recognizing these symptoms and promptly seeking professional dental care can help prevent further tooth decay, alleviate discomfort, and preserve dental health. Regular dental check-ups play a crucial role in detecting cavities in their early stages when treatment is typically less invasive and more effective. During your dental check-up, our dentist will examine your teeth for signs of dental decay. It is important to know that cavities can occur on all areas of a tooth, above and below the gum line, and are classified based on where they occur and their extent of progression. Smooth Surface Cavities | These cavities occur on the flat surfaces of our teeth and are typically the result of plaque buildup. They often progress slowly and can be easier to detect during regular dental check-ups. Pit and Fissure Cavities | Found on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars, these cavities occur in the pits and fissures of teeth, making them more susceptible to food particle accumulation and decay. These areas can be more challenging to clean effectively, leading to increased cavity risk. Root Cavities | Root cavities develop on the tooth roots, usually in patients with gum recession or periodontal disease. When gums recede, the tooth roots become exposed, making them vulnerable to decay. Root cavities can progress rapidly due to the softer nature of root surfaces compared to enamel. Coronal Cavities | These are the most common type and occur on the crown or visible surface of a tooth. Coronal cavities can affect both enamel and dentin, progressing deeper into the tooth structure if left untreated. Recurrent Cavities | Sometimes referred to as secondary cavities, these develop around existing dental fillings, crowns, or other restorative dental work. They occur due to the breakdown of the material or the presence of bacteria at the margins of the dental restoration. Baby Bottle Tooth Decay | This type of cavity specifically affects infants and toddlers. It is often associated with prolonged exposure to sugary liquids such as milk, formula, or fruit juice in baby bottles, especially when the child is put to bed with a bottle. Baby bottle tooth decay commonly affects the upper front teeth. The severity of cavities varies, ranging from initial enamel demineralization (incipient cavities) to more advanced decay involving deeper layers of the tooth. Early detection through regular dental check-ups and appropriate treatment are crucial in preventing cavity progression and preserving dental health. In its later stage, periodontitis, the gums begin to pull away from your teeth which causes your teeth to loosen or even fall out and may cause bone loss in your jaw. While periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, children have been known to get it. Either way, it starts with a lack of proper oral care. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two biggest threats to oral health. A recent report from the Dental Association, related to periodontitis, says that 47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease and that it increase with age. 70.1% of adults, 65 years and older have periodontal disease and this condition is more common in men than women (56.4% vs 38.4). Causes of Gum Disease Bacteria in our mouths start to infect tissue surrounding our teeth, which causes inflammation and leads to periodontal disease. When bacteria stays on our teeth long enough, it forms a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to tartar, also called calculus. Tartar buildup can spread below the gum line, which makes our teeth harder to clean. Then, only a dental health professional can remove the tartar and stop the periodontal disease from progressing any further. Warning Signs Bad breath or bad taste that won’t go away Red or swollen gums Tender or bleeding gums Painful chewing Loose teeth Sensitive teeth Gums that have pulled away from your teeth Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite Any change in the fit of partial dentures Risk Factors Smoking Diabetes Poor oral hygiene Heredity Crooked teeth Underlying immuno-deficiencies Fillings that have become defective Taking medications that cause dry mouth Dental bridges that no longer fit properly Hormonal changes Gum Recession Receding gums occur when the margin of gum tissue that surrounds your teeth wears off or pulls back, a process that exposes more of a tooth or its root. Pockets or gaps then form between your teeth and gum line, giving easy access for disease-causing bacteria to buildup. Untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures of your teeth can be severely affected, eventually leading to tooth loss. Gum recession is an everyday dental concern seen in most patients, though many do not realize when they have it because the process transpires gradually. Tooth sensitivity is usually the first sign of gum recession, or a patient might notice a tooth that appears lengthier than normal. To confirm the presence of gum recession, a notch can often be felt close to the gum line. Receding gums can directly lead to further worries, so be sure that you contact our office if you believe there is a sign of it. Gums can recede for a number of reasons: Periodontal Diseases | The primary cause of gum recession, periodontal diseases are bacterial gum infections that infect gum tissue and the supporting bone that secures your teeth in place. Dental Care | Ineffective brushing, flossing, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash simply invites plaque to develop into calculus (tartar), a hard substance that grows on and between our teeth. Only a professional dental cleaning can eliminate it. Aggressive Brushing | Brushing strenuously can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear away, receding your gums. Not only can gum recession make your smile appear imbalanced, but it can pose a serious oral health risk. When tooth roots become exposed, they are more prone to decay and do not receive the proper support from your gum tissue. Eventually, this can lead to more severe conditions, such as tooth loss. As a practice that prioritizes biological dentistry, we are proud to offer our patients conservative solutions that minimize trauma to their gum tissue and provides a more comfortable dental experience. Prior to beginning treatment, we administer a local anesthetic to the treatment area. Typically, treatment time for each tooth is about one hour. After the procedure you may experience some swelling and minor discomfort, most patients require little to no downtime. However, for a few days following, you should avoid spicy and abrasive foods that could irritate the treatment area. Bleeding Gums Bleeding gums occur when the delicate gum tissue around your teeth becomes irritated or inflamed, often leading to bleeding during brushing or flossing. This condition is typically an early warning sign of gum disease and, if left untreated, can progress to more serious oral health concerns. Bleeding gums are usually caused by plaque buildup along the gum line, but they can also result from poor oral hygiene, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, or medications that affect blood clotting. While occasional bleeding might seem harmless, persistent bleeding requires attention to address underlying issues and prevent further complications. Bleeding gums can occur due to several factors, including: Gingivitis | The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis causes redness, swelling, and bleeding due to the accumulation of plaque and bacteria on the gums. Poor Oral Hygiene | Inconsistent brushing and flossing allow plaque to harden into tartar, which irritates and inflames the gums, leading to bleeding. Aggressive Brushing or Flossing | Using excessive force while brushing or flossing can damage gum tissue and cause bleeding. If not treated, bleeding gums can lead to gum recession, infection, and even tooth loss. Additionally, inflamed gums can indicate systemic health issues, as gum disease has been linked to conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and scheduling regular dental cleanings are essential to managing bleeding gums effectively. BOTOX® has been approved by the FDA as an effective treatment for managing Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, a condition causing discomfort and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Unlike its cosmetic applications, BOTOX® exhibits promise in relieving the symptoms associated with TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder stems from various factors such as teeth grinding, stress, or jaw misalignment, leading to muscle strain, resulting in pain, stiffness, and difficulty in jaw movement. BOTOX® injections, derived from botulinum toxin, work by temporarily relaxing the injected muscles, reducing their ability to contract forcefully. This relaxation can alleviate the symptoms of TMJ disorder, providing relief from pain and restoring ease in jaw movement. One of the notable advantages of using BOTOX® for TMJ disorder is its minimal downtime, allowing patients to resume regular activities promptly after the procedure. Results typically start to become noticeable within 48-72-hours, reaching their full effect within 30-days and potentially lasting up to 4-months. Moreover, BOTOX® treatments for TMJ disorder are suitable for both men and women, offering a viable option for patients seeking relief from TMJ-related discomfort. Treatment plans may vary depending on factors such as age and specific treatment goals. Patients trust BOTOX® for TMJ disorder due to its established reputation and track record. Supported by extensive research spanning over several years, BOTOX® employs a unique manufacturing process, ensuring its potency and effectiveness in managing TMJ disorder symptoms. How Does BOTOX® Work? BOTOX® for TMJ works by injecting botulinum toxin into the affected jaw muscles, inhibiting their excessive contraction. This blocks nerve signals that cause muscle tightening, relaxing the jaw muscles. By reducing muscle activity, BOTOX® eases strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), alleviating pain, tension, and improving jaw mobility. This intervention provides temporary relief from TMJ-related symptoms, diminishing discomfort and allowing for better jaw function. What To Expect With BOTOX® Treatment With BOTOX® treatment for TMJ, expect targeted injections into jaw muscles, taking between 10-30-minutes. You may feel a slight pinch during injections. Results typically appear within a week, with optimal effects showing within 1-month. Relief from TMJ symptoms such as pain, jaw tension, and improved jaw movement may last for several months. Mild bruising or redness at injection sites is possible, usually fading quickly. Minimal downtime allows for immediate return to regular activities. Follow-up appointments may be necessary for sustained relief, as BOTOX® treatment effects are temporary. How Long Is The Recovery Time After BOTOX® ? Recovery time following BOTOX® for TMJ is minimal. Generally, there is no need for downtime, allowing immediate resumption of regular activities post-treatment. Patients may experience mild bruising, redness, or slight discomfort at the injection sites, however, these effects typically diminish quickly. Engaging in strenuous activities or massaging the treated areas immediately after the procedure is usually discouraged to prevent the spread of the toxin. While most patients resume normal routines right after treatment, it is advisable to consult with us for specific guidelines and recommendations tailored to your individual circumstances. How Many Injections Does BOTOX® Include? The number of BOTOX® injections for TMJ treatment varies based on your individual needs and the severity of symptoms. Typically, multiple injections are administered into specific jaw muscles during a single appointment, with the exact quantity determined before treatment is started. The number of injections aims to strategically target the affected muscles responsible for TMJ-related discomfort and limited jaw movement. Our dentist assesses and determines the precise locations and quantity of injections required for effective relief, customizing the treatment plan to address your unique condition and optimize the therapeutic outcome. Relieve Jaw Pain with BOTOX® Therapy Experience lasting relief from TMJ pain and muscle tension with BOTOX® treatment in Pasadena at South Lake Dental . Understanding the causes, symptoms, and potential treatments for these issues is essential for managing discomfort and preventing further dental complications. A toothache typically involves localized pain around a tooth, often stemming from dental decay, gum disease, abscesses, fractures, or tooth grinding. Tooth sensitivity refers to discomfort caused by specific stimuli such as extreme temperatures, sweet and acidic foods, or air. Receding gums, decay, or cracked teeth often result in heightened sensitivity. Dental treatments such as fillings, root canals, or gum treatments tackle underlying issues causing toothaches and sensitivity. Desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride applications, and regular dental check-ups can help manage the discomfort. Consulting our dentist is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. What Is A Toothache? A toothache refers to pain experienced around a tooth or within the oral cavity. Several factors contribute to toothaches: Dental Decay (Cavities) | Dental decay, caused by bacterial activity in the mouth, is one of the primary reasons for toothaches. Bacteria generate acids that gradually erode tooth enamel, creating cavities. As decay progresses and reaches the inner layers of a tooth, it exposes nerve endings, resulting in sensitivity and pain. Gum Disease | Infections and inflammation affecting the gums can cause discomfort and pain. Gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, can progress to periodontitis, causing pain around the affected teeth and potential tooth loss if left untreated. Tooth Abscess | An abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can develop at the root of a tooth or between the tooth and gum tissue. This condition is often associated with severe, throbbing pain and requires immediate dental attention to prevent further complications. Tooth Trauma | Accidents, injuries, or biting down on hard objects can result in a cracked or damaged tooth, leading to acute pain and discomfort. Fractured teeth can expose sensitive areas, causing sensitivity to temperature changes and pressure. Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) | Grinding or clenching teeth, often involuntarily during sleep, can cause toothaches and jaw pain. Over time, bruxism can wear down tooth enamel, leading to increased sensitivity and pain. What Causes Sensitive Teeth? Having sensitive teeth causes discomfort or pain in response to certain triggers, such as hot or cold temperatures, sweet or acidic foods, or even breathing cold air. Common causes of sensitive teeth include: Exposed Tooth Roots | Receding gums due to age, gum disease, or aggressive brushing habits can expose tooth roots. Unlike enamel, the roots are composed of dentin, a softer tissue containing microscopic tubules that connect to the nerves, leading to sensitivity when exposed. Enamel Erosion | Acidic foods and beverages, gastrointestinal reflux, or excessive consumption of acidic substances can gradually wear down tooth enamel. This exposes the dentin layer, leading to increased sensitivity. Tooth Decay or Cavities | When dental decay progresses and affects the dentin, it can cause sensitivity and discomfort, especially when consuming hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages. Dental Procedures | Some dental treatments such as professional cleanings, fillings, or teeth whitening procedures might cause temporary sensitivity. However, this usually resolves shortly after the procedure. Cracked Teeth | Fractured or cracked teeth can expose the sensitive inner layers, leading to increased sensitivity and discomfort when exposed to various stimuli. Treatments Available For Toothaches and Sensitive Teeth The treatment for toothaches and sensitive teeth depends on the underlying cause and may include dental fillings for cavities, root canal therapy for infections, or periodontal treatments for gum disease. Before these issues have a chance to develop, we recommend our patients to take proper precaution to ensure their oral health remains intact. Using specialized toothpaste containing compounds such as potassium nitrate or fluoride can help reduce sensitivity over time. Additionally, in-office fluoride treatments may strengthen enamel and decrease tooth sensitivity. Adopting good oral hygiene practices, such as using a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoiding acidic or sugary foods, can help prevent enamel erosion and subsequent sensitivity. For patients who suffer from bruxism, wearing a custom mouth guard while sleeping can protect teeth from grinding and alleviate associated pain. Toothaches and sensitive teeth can significantly impact your quality of life. Seeking professional dental care, maintaining good oral hygiene habits, and addressing underlying issues promptly are crucial steps in managing and preventing these conditions. Regular dental check-ups and early intervention can prevent minor issues from escalating into something more severe. If your teeth are overly sensitive, or if you are experiencing a sharp pain in your tooth, you should contact our office as soon as possible. We offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies. In instances when a patient regularly takes part in physical activity or grinds or clenches their teeth, it is crucial to wear a mouth guard as it creates a barrier between your teeth and any object or force. Mouth guards also help prevent injuries to your jaw, chips or cracks to your teeth, and even tooth loss.   When selecting a mouth guard, is it best to understand why we do not recommend store-bought and always recommend our patients to acquire a custom mouth guard instead. First, there are the boil and bite mouth guards that are usually purchased in pharmacies and sports stores. This type of guard can be molded at home using boiling water, which helps soften the material, and then placed in your mouth to help form the plastic to your teeth. This is a less expensive mouth guard; however, it will not supply you with the best comfort or protection.   A stock mouth guard is also sold in a sports store and comes pre-formed. This form of mouth guard provides the least amount of protection and comfort, which could result in extensive injury to your lips, teeth, or jaw. This is because these types of mouth guards take the approach of “one size fits all”. There is also the chance that stock mouth guards could interfere with swallowing and breathing, which is why they are not recommended. Store-Bought vs Custom-Fit Mouth Guards There are a variety of options available to patients who are looking to protect their teeth during sleep or physical activity. However, patients are left wondering what the difference is between store-bought and custom fit mouth guards. Store-bought mouth guards are mass-produced, which means that a generic form is taken to ensure it can fit a multitude of shapes. Although these mouth guards come ready to use, they may not fit every patient the same due to the different sizes and shapes of our mouths. Wearing an improperly fitted mouth guard could potentially cause more harm than not wearing one at all as the store-bought mouth guards are made from soft plastic, which is thin. Thin plastic prevents the mouth guards from staying in the same shape for long periods of time. Typically, these store-bought mouth guards need to be replaced every 90-days or after 40-uses. Custom-fit mouth guards are made by a dental professional through impressions and measurements to ensure accuracy. They are made from thermoplastic which is far more durable than store-bought plastic. Since they are custom-fit pieces, they will fit much more comfortably. These custom mouth guards also last 3-4-times longer than the store-bought kind. Sports Guards If you take part in any contact sport or physical activity, you should always wear a sports guard to prevent injury to your face, teeth, and jaw. Oral injuries can occur at any age and as a result, it is crucial to stay protected when involved in contact sports. Usually, we recommend acquiring a sport guard if you play sports such as football, rugby, hockey, or basketball, however, other sports such as baseball, cricket, and soccer have also been noted for patients to use a sports guard. You should also consider a sports guard if you take part in recreational activities such as skateboarding, cycling, or even track and field.   Sports mouth guards are beneficial because they help protect your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues from any trauma that could occur during the activities. They can also help reduce the pressure that could occur from a forceful hit to the chin. When acquiring a sports guard, be sure that the material is comfortable but secure, allows for normal breathing, provides full protection, and does not have an odor. Night Guards Many patients have found they suffer from headaches, TMD, sensitive teeth, or even eroded, chipped, or cracked teeth due to undiagnosed bruxism. This condition typically happens during the night, which is why many patients do not know if they have it. Although bruxism may not prompt any real concerns, in the long-term, it can lead to broken teeth, loss of tooth enamel, and potential tooth loss. However, once it is diagnosed, you can start wearing a night guard to help prevent further injury and pain. So, if you do grind or clench your teeth, a night guard will help protect your teeth and relieve tension that may occur.   There are a few different night guards that patients can purchase, such as a custom night guard, a boil and bite, and a one-size-fits-all. A custom night guard is made by a professional and is custom fit for your mouth using a dental impression. The boil and bite night guards are an over-the-counter guard which requires you to boil the piece of plastic to soften the material in order to make your impression. This night guard may not give you the maximum protection or comfort you are looking for but it is a quick fix (just not a long-term solution). A one-size-fits-all night guard is another over-the-counter guard which is not custom or form fitting. These guards may work for a brief period but are not suggested for the long-term as they may only help with occasional grinding. Protect Your Smile Day and Night Keep your teeth safe with custom mouth guards in Pasadena from South Lake Dental . Whether for sports or nighttime grinding, our professionally fitted guards offer superior comfort, durability, and protection, helping you prevent damage and preserve your healthy smile. A root canal infection occurs when decay enters the inner chamber of your tooth. Without treatment, the tooth will not be able to receive vital nutrients and may need to be extracted. If your tooth is extracted, it is important that you replace the tooth, preferably with a dental implant supported restoration, to restore the tooth from root to crown. Our team uses advanced dental techniques that are designed to improve the success rate of the procedure while cutting down on your discomfort. With proper aftercare, you can preserve your natural tooth for years to come. The nerve root canal system of a tooth is shaped like a tree, with the nerves spreading out like tree branches. It is only possible to clean the trunk of the root canal system and not the branches themselves. This results in a 90-95% success rate as a nationwide average. When addressing your root canal infection, we always keep your comfort in mind. Root canal infections are often painful, which is why prompt treatment at our dental practice is often necessary. When cleaning and disinfecting your tooth during root canal treatment, we use a biological technique that helps eliminate bacteria. Following the surgery, we use a special sealant to secure your tooth. All of the techniques we use deliver the highest success rate possible to prevent potentially painful complications. Helpful Information According to the Dental Association, nearly 70% of patients report pain as a top concern following root canal treatment. Following the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort and sensitivity as the local anesthetic wears off. This period of discomfort should subside within a few days following surgery. Keep in mind that any pain should be manageable using over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. We do recommend appropriate pain medications while ensuring that the medications do not interact with any prescriptions or supplements you may already be taking. In the first day or two following your root canal procedure, you should avoid chewing hard foods as this can aggravate your recovering tooth. Helpful Tips Many of our patients have reduced discomfort following root canal treatment by following these tips:   Sleep with an elevated pillow Gargle with saltwater Apply an icepack near the surgical site Perform excellent oral hygiene habits Avoid hard foods until your tooth completely recovers Avoid hot or cold food and drinks Follow recovery guidelines carefully   By working with our biological dental practice, you can increase your chances of saving your natural tooth. We use the latest techniques to improve your root canal treatment success. Why Root Canal Treatment? Our goal is to provide ways to save your natural teeth with the highest possible success rate. The loss of a tooth can be psychologically devastating and the alternatives to replacement can be even more expensive than a root canal itself. If not replaced, the loss of a tooth can have dire consequences, such as: bone loss, teeth movement, collapsing bite, and cosmetic concerns. If you are experiencing tooth pain, contact us to schedule a consultation. We can help determine whether root canal treatment is right for you. Relieve Tooth Pain and Save Your Smile Severe tooth pain doesn’t have to mean tooth loss. At South Lake Dental , our gentle root canal treatment in Pasadena removes infection, preserves your natural tooth, and restores comfort. There are two TMJs, one on each side of the jaw, and they work in unison to open and close our mouths and allow us to chew and speak. A TMJ disorder (or TMD) is a chronic degenerative condition that can take years to develop and have serious consequences to your health and quality of life. When your jaw is misaligned, it can cause headaches, neck, and/or shoulder pain, clicking and/or popping sounds in the jaw, locked jaw, jaw pain, teeth grinding, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Teeth Grinding Many patients grind or clench their teeth, a habit medically known as bruxism. While grinding from time to time might not cause harm, frequent grinding can create issues for your teeth and cause other oral health complications. Teeth grinding can stem from stress and anxiety, though it often develops during sleeping hours and is more likely to be the result of an abnormal bite, missing teeth, or crooked teeth. Sleep apnea, a sleeping disorder, can also be responsible for teeth grinding habits. As grinding typically occurs when you sleep, it is unlikely you will be aware of this tendency unless a symptom of bruxism, such as a constant headache or sore jaw is encountered. Speak to our dentist at your next appointment if you believe you may be grinding your teeth because they can examine your mouth and jaw for signs of bruxism, including jaw tenderness and excess wear on your teeth. Continual teeth grinding can produce fracturing, loosening, deterioration, or loss of teeth for some patients. If left untreated, you may need a dental bridge, crown, root canal, implant, partial denture, or even complete dentures in certain instances. A great way to help prevent further complications from occurring is to ask our office, at your next dental appointment, for a customized mouth guard to protect your teeth from grinding as you sleep. Clicking Or Locked Jaw  Your temporomandibular joint, located directly next to each of your ears is responsible for connecting your jaw to your skull and allowing your mouth to speak, chew, and yawn. When your jaw is clicking or locking, you might be experiencing a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This occurs when your jaw joint is harmed or inflamed due to an injury, inflammatory disorder, or other issue. Ideally, the temporomandibular joint operates as a smooth hinge so your jaw can move in a natural, free motion. Inflammation or harm impairs the movement, forcing your jaw to click or lock, while also making it a challenge to open your mouth. Some cases of TMD can be helped by lifestyle choices, for example, no longer chewing gum. You can also assist your recovery by reducing stress, utilizing a night guard that will treat teeth grinding, eating softer foods, and using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. In more severe cases of TMD, you might require treatment from a dental professional, especially if it was caused by an oral injury or inflammatory disease. Surgical treatments are rare and are only recommended if all other alternative treatments were ineffective. Treatment When you come in for your appointment, we will assess your teeth and mouth for any visible signs of wear. If there is an issue, we will use a few different methods to understand why the issue is happening and develop a customized treatment plan for you. Some of the methods we use to determine if you have a bite issue include a complete oral exam, panoramic x-rays, model of your mouth using our 3D scanner, and high-definition photos.   Depending on your situation, there are generally 2 ways to correct a TMJ dysfunction. One solution is to use braces and possibly other orthodontic appliances to correct the position and development of your jaw. The 2nd option is to establish a physiologic bite position using an appliance for 2-3-weeks. Then using crowns to restore your teeth to their healthy position. It is always best to treat TMD as early as possible to prevent future oral health issues. Find Relief from Jaw Pain and Grinding Constant jaw tension, clenching, or teeth grinding can cause lasting damage. At South Lake Dental , our skilled Pasadena dental team diagnoses TMJ disorders and creates personalized treatments, from custom night guards to bite correction, to ease discomfort and restore healthy jaw function. Failing Tooth | This typically refers to a tooth that is in the process of deteriorating or experiencing issues such as decay, infection, or has structural damage. The tooth might not necessarily be completely dislodged but has started to severely decay or become loose. Missing Tooth | A missing tooth is where a tooth is entirely absent from its socket. This could be due to various medical and dental conditions, trauma, extraction, or congenital absence, and where the tooth was not immediately replaced. Knocked-Out Tooth | Also known as an avulsed tooth, this occurs when a tooth is completely displaced from its socket due to trauma or injury. This can happen due to accidents, sports injuries, or other forceful impacts to the mouth. In any case, a dislodged or missing tooth can be a serious dental emergency that requires immediate attention. If a tooth has been knocked-out, it is crucial to seek dental care promptly as there might be a chance to save the tooth. Our dentist can provide the appropriate treatment, which might involve reimplanting a knocked-out tooth or using a dental implant, dental bridge, or dentures to replace a missing tooth. The best treatment option for your missing or knocked-out tooth will depend on the severity and the condition of the tooth and surrounding structures. What To Do If You Have A Failing, Missing, or Knocked-Out Tooth The actions to take if you have a failing, missing, or knocked-out tooth can significantly impact your chances of saving the tooth. Here are the steps to take in each scenario: Failing Tooth | If you suspect a tooth is failing due to decay, infection, or structural damage, see our dentist as soon as possible. Be sure to maintain good oral hygiene by gently brushing around the affected tooth, and use mouthwash to keep the area clean. Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further issues to the tooth and be sure to follow any specific instructions or recommendations given to you by our dentist. Knocked-Out Tooth | Act quickly. Time is crucial in potentially saving a knocked-out tooth. Retrieve the tooth without touching its root. Rinse the tooth gently in warm water or milk, and avoid removing any attached tissues. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth in its socket and hold it in place by gently biting down on a clean cloth or gauze while you make your way to our office, or to the hospital. If reinsertion is not possible, keep the knocked-out tooth in milk (not water) and seek immediate emergency dental care. In any case of dental emergency involving a failing, missing, or knocked-out tooth, seeking prompt professional dental care is vital. Contact our dentist   or visit a hospital emergency room immediately. Failing Dental Implants Dental implant failure refers to a condition where a dental implant does not successfully fulfill its intended function. This failure can occur at different stages, including during the initial healing period after implant placement or even years after the successful integration of the implant. There are two primary categories of dental implant failure: Early Implant Failure | This occurs within a few months after the implant placement and before the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone (osseointegration). Causes of early failure may include inadequate bone integration, infection, implant mobility, or implant fracture. Late Implant Failure | This occurs months or years after successful implantation and osseointegration. Late failure may result from a variety of factors, such as peri-implantitis (inflammation around the implant), bone loss around the implant site, mechanical issues such as abutment or prosthetic complications, or even systemic health issues such as diabetes or autoimmune diseases. Several other factors contribute to implant failure, including poor oral hygiene leading to infections or gum diseases around the implant area, insufficient bone density or quality at the implant site, improperly placed implants, excessive biting forces or parafunctional habits (teeth grinding), smoking, and certain systemic health conditions that can compromise healing and bone integration. Symptoms of dental implant failure may include pain, swelling, mobility of the implant, discomfort while chewing, gum recession around the implant, or visible signs of infection. Addressing implant failure often involves a comprehensive assessment by a dental professional. Treatment may range from non-surgical interventions such as antibiotics, professional cleaning, or adjustments, to more invasive procedures such as implant removal, bone grafting, or replacing the failed implant. Preventive measures including regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene, following post-implant care instructions, and lifestyle modifications, play a crucial role in minimizing the risk of implant failure and ensuring their long-term success. It can develop in any part of the mouth, internal or external – lips, tongue, cheeks, floor and roof of the mouth, sinuses, and throat. This is why routine checkups are so important. Routine checkups allow our dentist to thoroughly examine your mouth for early signs of development. While oral cancer is always a concern, you should know that it is rare. Unless you are actively using tobacco products, or have a gene pool that has a history of developing it, there is a very little chance you will experience anything close to oral cancer in your lifetime. However, it is never a bad idea to get your concerns checked at your next dental visit to our office. An oral cancer screening is a routine examination that is done once a year. We educate our patients about the importance of following up with their medical doctor for any visual lesions, lumps, or bumps that may be observed during the screening. The first step in screening for oral cancer is the completion of your dental and medical history, which includes a review of: General health history, including a list of current medications and allergies. Oral and lifestyle habits, with reference to quantity, frequency, and duration of tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Symptoms of oral pain or discomfort. If anything is concerning, we may perform an extraoral and intraoral examination, where we: Inspect your head and neck for asymmetry, tenderness, or swelling. Palpate the submandibular, neck, and supraclavicular regions for lymph nodes, paying close attention to size, number, tenderness, and mobility. Inspect and palpate the lips and perioral tissues for abnormalities. Systematically inspect and palpate all oral soft tissues, paying close attention to the high-risk sites for the development of oral cancer including the lateral and ventral aspects of the tongue, floor of the mouth, and the soft palate complex. Symptoms of Oral Cancer It is important to note that while these symptoms may be caused by other, less serious oral health issues, they should still be checked by our office at your next routine visit. Common symptoms include, red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity, a sore that bleeds easily or does not heal, a lump, thickening, or rough spot, pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in your mouth or on your lips, or difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your jaw or tongue. There are many other symptoms to lookout for, so it is always best to call us for an appointment if you experience or see anything alarming. Diagnosis and Treatment Oral cancer screenings involve an examination of the oral cavity as a whole – not just your teeth. This helps detect cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. If the early stages of oral cancer are detected, it is typically treated with surgery or radiation. Advanced cases will combine surgery and radiation as the most common treatment. In the late stages, radiation and chemotherapy are the usual combination, with or without surgery. Prevention With all cancers, the best way to prevent oral cancer starts with you – avoid all tobacco products, only drink alcohol in moderation, maintain a healthy and balanced diet, and limit your exposure to the sun (this is significantly more important than sunblock, because sunblock can only be as effective as your ability to properly apply it, while limited exposure always works best). There is also a link between certain types of the HPV virus and throat cancer. Avoiding risky behavior and receiving the HPV vaccine can be considered to help prevent this cancer. Prioritize Your Health with Early Detection Protect your smile and overall well-being with routine oral cancer screenings in Pasadena at South Lake Dental . Our experienced team performs thorough, comfortable exams to detect early warning signs and keep your oral health on track. Early prevention is the key to peace of mind. Essentially, dental implants replace teeth roots and dental crowns, dental bridges, or dentures are attached to the implants through a connector piece known as an abutment. Cleaning implant-supported tooth replacements is just as important as cleaning natural teeth, as both depend on healthy surrounding tissues for support. Plaque collects on implant crowns just as it does on natural teeth and must be removed daily at home with proper flossing and brushing. Without daily care, an infection may develop known as peri-implantitis which can result in the loss of the implant. Unlike inflammation around teeth, this reaction can be quite catastrophic, quickly leading to a loss of bone around the affected implant which can rapidly progress to the loss of the implant itself. Our dental hygiene team has an important role to play in keeping dental implants infection-free, and there are many factors to be considered in selecting the right instruments for a professional cleaning. In order to choose the most effective dental instruments possible, we must perform an oral exam to better understand the nature of the debris, the location of the deposits, the type of surface on which the debris accumulates, and the stubbornness with which they adhere. Our team must select instruments for cleaning that will not impact the crown, bridge, denture, abutment, or the implant itself. Maintaining the highly polished, smooth surface of the abutment and attachment are critical. If they are scratched, they can attract and harbor bacteria. That is why the instruments used are most often made of plastics and resins. Natural teeth do not scratch in the same way, and therefore metal instruments can be used to clean them. If any part of the implant body itself is visible, this may mean there is infection that has resulted in gum and/or bone loss. The implant surface becomes exposed following loss of its fusion to the bone. Implant surfaces are generally microscopically “roughened” to increase surface area for bone attachment. But this surface roughness makes implants difficult to clean and disinfect. Additionally, some implants are screw-shaped, and their threads add to the cleaning dilemma. Despite these special cleaning challenges, implants are highly successful. In fact, studies indicate long-term success rates are well over 95%. However, the prevention of peri-implantitis is fundamental to implant health, maintenance, and function. And cleaning implants and their related components is an important part of their success. Unlike other alternatives, they offer a blend of durability, aesthetics, and functionality that closely mirrors natural teeth. At our dental practice, we believe in educating our patients about the benefits and intricacies of this transformative procedure. A dental implant, as defined by the Dental Association, is essentially an artificial tooth root crafted from titanium metal. This implant is surgically anchored into the jawbone, serving as a stable foundation for the replacement crown (or cap). The primary objectives of dental implants are: Restoration | To restore the appearance and function of a missing tooth. Preservation | To prevent bone loss in the jaw, which often occurs after tooth loss. Protection | To safeguard adjacent teeth from shifting or becoming misaligned. Key Components of Dental Implants Understanding the structure of dental implants can help demystify the procedure. Here is a closer look at its primary components: Crown | This is the visible part of the dental implant, meticulously crafted from ceramic material. It is designed to resemble the appearance and color of a natural tooth, ensuring seamless integration with the rest of the teeth. Abutment | Acting as a bridge between the crown and the implant, the abutment securely holds the crown in place. It is typically made of titanium, zirconia, or porcelain, chosen based on the patient's specific needs and aesthetic preferences. Screw (Implant) | This titanium post is the heart of the dental implant procedure. Once inserted into the jawbone, it undergoes a process called osseointegration, where the bone grows around the implant. This bonding ensures the implant's stability and longevity. Managing Pain and Discomfort One of the common concerns patients voice is the pain associated with the procedure. However, advancements in dental technology and anesthesia can help: Pain Levels | The discomfort experienced during a dental implant procedure is often likened to that of a tooth extraction. It is manageable and short-lived. Anesthesia Options | Depending on your comfort level and the complexity of the procedure, various anesthesia options are available. Local anesthesia is commonly used, but sedation or general anesthesia can be considered for more extensive procedures or to help manage dental anxiety. Post-Procedure Care | After the surgery, patients might experience some swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort. Our dental practice provides clear aftercare instructions and medications, if necessary, to ensure a smooth recovery. By understanding the foundational aspects of dental implants, patients can approach the procedure with confidence and clarity. At our dental practice, we prioritize patient education, ensuring everyone is well-informed and comfortable with their dental decisions. The Professionals Behind Dental Implant Surgery Dental implant surgery is a meticulous procedure that requires specialized skills and expertise. The professionals involved are pivotal to ensuring the success and longevity of the implant. Here is a closer look at the experts who make this transformative procedure possible: Oral Surgeons Oral surgeons are at the forefront of dental implant procedures. Their extensive training in surgeries of the mouth and jaw equips them to handle the complexities of implant placement. Key responsibilities include: Assessment: Evaluating the patient's oral health and determining the feasibility of the implant procedure. Surgical Placement: Precisely inserting the titanium implant into the jawbone. Post-Surgical Care: Monitoring the healing process and ensuring successful osseointegration of the implant. Periodontists Periodontists specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases. Their expertise extends to the structures that support teeth, making them integral to the dental implant process. Their role encompasses: Gum Health: Ensuring the gums are healthy and free from diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis. Bone Assessment: Evaluating the quality and quantity of the jawbone, which is crucial for the stability of the implant. Maintenance: Providing care tips and treatments to maintain the health of the gums around the implant. Endodontists While endodontists primarily focus on root canal treatment, their understanding of tooth anatomy and nerve structures can be invaluable, especially if complications arise. Their expertise includes: Pain Management: Addressing any nerve-related discomfort or pain during or after the implant procedure. Tooth Preservation: In cases where a tooth might be saved, endodontists can provide treatments to preserve the natural tooth structure. The Dental Implant Journey At our dental practice, we pride ourselves on housing a team of dedicated professionals who prioritize patient care above all. Our dentist, in collaboration with our specialists, crafts a personalized treatment plan for each patient. From the initial consultation to post-surgical care, we ensure that our patients are in skilled and caring hands, guiding them towards a brighter, healthier smile. Eligibility and Diagnosis Eligibility varies based on general health, jaw structure, bone density, and other factors. It is crucial to consult with our dentist for a precise diagnosis. Diagnosis Process: Comprehensive examination of the mouth. Utilization of X-rays, CT scans, and other diagnostic tools. Personalized treatment planning based on findings. Procedure Overview Initial Steps: The gum tissue is opened to expose the jawbone. A hole is drilled for the implant's placement. Implant Placement: The screw is placed into the jawbone, and the gum tissue is stitched back. Over several months, the implant bonds with the bone and gums. Final Steps: An abutment is attached, followed by the replacement tooth. In cases with multiple missing teeth, a bridge might be used between implants Prevent Decay with Professional Dental Cleanings in Pasadena HOME ABOUT OUR TEAM Meet Dr. Balikyan PATIENT INFO Dental Insurance Dental Financing Patient Education Videos Our Dental Blog At Home Care Dental Technology Post-Surgical Care Biological Dentistry WHAT WE TREAT Cavities and Dental Decay Cracked and Chipped Teeth Failing, Missing, or Knocked Out Teeth Toothaches and Sensitive Teeth Stained and Discolored Teeth Bad Breath Clenching, Grinding, and Jaw Pain Sleeping Issues Gum Disease Misaligned Teeth OUR SERVICES Dental Cleanings Dental Fillings Dental Sealants Cosmetic Dentistry BOTOX® For TMJ Invisalign Dental Implants Dental Implant Maintenance Dental Implant Surgery Single Tooth Implants Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges Root Canals Oral Surgery Full Mouth Reconstruction Wisdom Teeth Removal Dentures Custom Mouth Guards Oral Cancer Screenings APPOINTMENT REQUEST Pasadena Dentist We understand that trying to find a nearby dentist you can trust is difficult, that is why we make it easy for you to work with us. However, there are spaces in our mouths that are difficult to clean on our own, which is why we all need to have our teeth professionally cleaned every few months by a dental hygienist. As your local dental practice, our job is to keep our patients oral health in check. We do this by providing our patients with an oral exam and thorough cleaning of their mouth. A dental cleaning involves the removal of plaque, polishing, and instructing on proper oral care from home. To break it down further, a dental cleaning helps remove excess plaque from hard-to-reach places in our mouths. Plaque is a mostly invisible sticky film of bacteria that forms on our teeth when we eat and drink. The bacteria in plaque acts as an acid that can decay tooth enamel and cause cavities. If left untreated, plaque turns to tartar, and tartar can form a shield overtop of our gums that can cause inflammation, which can cause bleeding and the gumline to be pushed down, which in turn causes tooth sensitivity and even tooth and bone loss. We understand that there are patients who do not wish to come into the office, for one reason or another. Typically, patients tend to skip dental visits due to anxiety, dental pain, income, or the lack of dental insurance. These are all valid reasons that our dentist can address with you on your next visit as it is even more important to care for your health, which includes your oral health. Please call our office if you have certain care requirements. Tooth Desensitization and Fluoride Treatment If a taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee is sometimes a painful experience for you, then you most likely suffer from sensitive teeth. Dental sensitivity is very common amongst adults and there are many reasons why teeth become sensitive. Most often, it is due to root exposure. We offer treatment to decrease that sensitivity with minimal to no discomfort by applying a fluoride gel or other desensitizing agent to your teeth. This process is simple and can have long-lasting affects on the strength of your enamel and the transmission of painful sensations to the nerves of your teeth. Usually, tooth sensitivity occurs because of bone loss, vigorous brushing, clenching/grinding of teeth, acid wear on teeth, smoking, periodontal surgery, cancer treatment, and dry mouth. Fluoride is used to help prevent tooth decay and is usually recommended for children up to 18-years old but is determined by your oral health. Fluoride treatment helps if you have a history of tooth decay or sensitivity around your teeth and gums, and also helps by strengthening the enamel on your teeth. Keep Your Smile Fresh and Healthy Regular dental cleanings are the key to lasting oral health. At South Lake Dental , our gentle Pasadena dental team removes plaque and tartar buildup to prevent decay and gum disease. Enjoy a brighter, cleaner smile with professional care tailored to your needs. Book an Appointment Book Appointment Online We are the Pasadena dentist near you! Compared to dental bridges and dentures, implants are a more permanent long-term solution to losing a tooth. You can replace all your teeth with implants. However, if you are missing an entire row of teeth, procedures like All on 4 or denture implants may be a more suitable option:   All on 4 are custom made to replace a full upper or lower set of teeth that are permanently placed into your mouth and cannot be removed by the patient. It is a one piece full bridge secured into place using implants. Implant retained dentures are removable and can snap into place. Similar to All on 4 in that the row of teeth is supported by implants, except the row of teeth can be removed by the patient. Implants are typically placed in a single appointment, in less than 1-hour. The initial discomfort and swelling on your gums from placing the implant should subside within 3-4-days. If the discomfort and swelling should continue after 5-7-days, please contact our office. Your bone on the other-hand, where the titanium rods are placed, takes anywhere from 3-6-months to fully heal. After 3-6-months of healing, the protective cap placed over the implant can be removed and a permanent crown can be placed. If you need a dental extraction, this is the perfect time to replace that tooth with a dental implant. If the tooth is not replaced, you may start to notice your face beginning to shrink, or collapse into itself. This happens because there is nothing supporting the bone structure or structural integrity of your jaw. If this happens, you may require a bone graft. Bone grafting is the process of replacing or augmenting bone around a missing tooth. Bone loss is typically caused by the extraction of a tooth and the loss of the supporting bony structure. When placing an implant, bone may need to be augmented to give the implant a supporting structure. This is why we recommend replacing a missing tooth with an implant right away, as this usually eliminates the need for bone grafting later and helps prevent facial collapse. This also prevents 2 healing periods (1 for the extraction and 1 for the implant). The Pros and Cons For Tooth Replacement Options As dentistry advances, so do the options, methods, and techniques used to replace missing teeth. Luckily for you, we offer many different tooth replacement options and will recommend one of these options to you based on your desired outcome and budget. Not everyone is a viable candidate for each option though, so, we can discuss which tooth replacement option is best for you during your free initial consultation. Traditional Dentures Low-cost treatment Non-surgical Easily replaceable Qualifies for dental financing Cons Offers minimal support Will require relines and repairs Often loosens or falls out Does not halt jawbone loss Must be removed to clean Can cause discomfort or sore spots Potential for speech and eating difficulties Snap-In Dentures Enhanced stability Prevents jawbone deterioration Removable for easy cleaning Improved chewing and speaking capabilities Qualifies for dental financing Cons Moderate treatment cost May not look or feel natural May need relines or repairs Requires surgical procedure Higher initial cost than traditional dentures Fixed Full Arch Most natural look and feel Long-lasting solution Maximum stability and comfort Comparable to natural teeth Improves oral and overall health Fracture and chip resistant Promotes jawbone health Restores over 98% of function Qualifies for dental financing Cons Requires more extensive surgical procedure Cannot be removed at home High treatment cost What To Expect From Dental Implants Typically, dental implants require at least two appointments. During your first appointment, we surgically place implant posts into your jawbone. The treatment area will then need to fully heal before your final restoration can be placed, which typically takes 3-6-months. Once healing is complete, you will return to our office for the restoration placement portion of the procedure. While dental implants are the preferred method for replacing missing teeth, not all patients are eligible for this treatment. Shortly after a tooth falls out, or is extracted, the jawbone begins to recede. This is because there are no tooth roots supporting the tissue. The longer a patient takes to replace missing teeth, the worse jawbone atrophy can become. Since dental implants rely on the stability provided by secure placement in the jawbone, it is essential that you have sufficient tissue to support the posts. However, we may be able to perform a bone graft or sinus lift procedure to rebuild the recessed jawbone. During your consultation, we will evaluate your candidacy and make the best recommendation to protect your oral health.  While dental implants can be provided by many dentists, it is imperative that the dentist you choose possess the skills and experience necessary to precisely place the posts. Our dentist has undergone extensive training to provide patients with secure, durable implants. Our surgical expertise allows us to provide patients with an unparalleled level of dental implant care. Our team works together to provide you with safe, reliable dental implants, from surgery through to restoration, conveniently at our dental practice. Trust us to completely rebuild your smile. The Top Six Factors That Affect Dental Implant Costs There is no doubt that dental implants are the best solution for replacing missing teeth. They also offer a number of long-term oral health benefits. However, many patients believe that the cost of dental implants precludes them from undergoing treatment. Here are the top six factors that affect dental implant costs:   The Number of Dental Implants |  The number of teeth that need to be replaced will affect your total cost of treatment. There are a variety of reasons why patients seek out braces or clear aligners from our dental practice or other orthodontists in the area. While the procedures and treatments are fairly standard from office to office, every patient is unique and you need a dentist who understands the complexities of your individual needs as a whole. Our practice provides all patients with a complete oral exam to ensure your treatment plan is set up for success. The best way to stop serious issues from forming is to catch them in their early stages and develop a treatment plan to restore any issues that may have been caused. It is important for us that you understand what issues there are in orthodontics, and what we can do to help. Overbite An overbite is when a patient's top teeth overlap their bottom teeth. While almost every patient has at least a bit of an overbite (1-3MM), which is normal, there are some patient's who have a more severe overlap. It’s considered an excessive overbite when a patient's top teeth overlap their bottom between 3-9MM, or more. Underbite Underbites occur when the lower row of teeth significantly overlaps the upper row. This is less common than overbites, however, the issue involves the same chewing complications, speech impediments, and jaw soreness that overbites do. In an underbite, a patient's chin is often pressed forward. Crossbite A crossbite occurs when the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw. When this happens, the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth. The opposite can also occur where the lower jaw may be too small for the upper jaw. Either way, a crossbite can occur on either on the left or right side of the mouth or on both sides. Open Bite An open bite is when the upper and lower teeth do not touch when the mouth is at rest. This can happen on either side of the mouth but is most common with the front teeth. Open bites are quite rare. One study discovered that they are the least prevalent type of misalignment. Crowded Teeth In an ideal alignment of teeth, there is the right amount of space for the teeth to erupt without crowding or leaving gaps. The top teeth should hang slightly over the bottom teeth, with all the teeth lining up comfortably when biting down, however, this does not occur with dental crowding. Gapped Teeth Having gapped teeth can be the result of a size difference between your teeth and jaw, gum disease, missing teeth, or improper habits such as thumb sucking. Whether you have a small or large gap between your teeth, our orthodontist can provide insight on which treatment can close the gap. Straighten Your Smile with Confidence Whether you’re dealing with crowding, gaps, or bite issues, South Lake Dental offers personalized orthodontic solutions to help you achieve a balanced, healthy smile. Our skilled Pasadena dental team provides advanced treatments like clear aligners and braces for comfortable, precise results. They are a conservative approach because they replace missing teeth without affecting or altering adjacent teeth. Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. They offer several advantages, including a natural look and comfortable fit, the confidence to smile, eat, and engage in social activities without worrying, and excellent long-term value. Dental implants stimulate bone growth and prevent teeth from shifting toward the gap, making them an effective tooth replacement solution. If you are missing teeth or having problems with an ill-fitting denture or bridge, dental implants may be the right choice for you. Our dentist will evaluate your specific needs and develop a comprehensive post-implant placement maintenance plan that fosters a favorable prognosis. Dental Implants: The Modern Solution Understanding Dental Implants Dental implants, made of sturdy titanium, are today's answer to missing teeth. They serve as a reliable replacement for bridges, dentures, or partials. Essentially, an implant is a titanium artificial root placed surgically into the jawbone. Once bonded, a replacement tooth is attached, mimicking the appearance and function of natural teeth. Single tooth implants are ideal for replacing one or a few adjacent teeth, enhancing oral health and aesthetics. Their adaptability allows placement anywhere in the mouth. If considering this dental innovation, our dentist can assess its fit for your situation.   Who is Eligible for Dental Implants? Dental implants are a transformative solution for many, but it is essential to determine if they are the right fit for you. Ideal candidates typically exhibit good overall health, maintain gums free from periodontal disease, and possess a jawbone robust enough to anchor the implant securely. The jawbone's integrity is crucial as it serves as the foundation for the implant. If you have experienced bone loss due to prolonged tooth absence or other conditions, causing the jawbone to recede or not develop adequately, hope is not lost. Modern dental techniques, such as bone grafting, can come to the rescue. This procedure involves supplementing the existing bone with graft material, thereby creating a more solid base for the implant. Our dental practice is equipped to assess your specific needs and guide you through the best options tailored for your oral health. Assessment and Planning Before the actual procedure begins, it is essential to ensure that dental implants are the right solution for you. Oral Examination: A comprehensive check of your oral cavity is conducted to assess the health of your gums and the status of any remaining teeth. Diagnostic X-Rays: These are crucial for a detailed view of your jawbone, revealing its density and health, and the positioning of any remaining teeth. Treatment Plan Discussion: Based on the findings, our dentist will craft a bespoke treatment plan. This discussion ensures you are well-informed about every step of the upcoming procedure. Implant Insertion This foundational step is where the magic begins. Local Anesthesia: To ensure a pain-free experience, the area is numbed using local anesthesia. Implant Placement: A small incision is made in the gum to access the jawbone. A specialized drill creates a space for the implant, which is then securely placed. Healing Process: Over the subsequent months, a natural process called osseointegration occurs. The implant fuses with the bone, creating a robust foundation for the replacement tooth. During this period, the gum tissue also undergoes healing. Prosthetic Attachment Once the implant has integrated with the bone, the next phase is initiated. Abutment Placement: This connector is fixed onto the implant, serving as the base for the replacement tooth. Impressions: To ensure a perfect fit, an impression of your mouth is taken. This mold aids in crafting a replacement tooth that aligns seamlessly with your natural teeth. Crown Attachment: The custom-made crown, designed to match your natural teeth, is then affixed to the abutment. Depending on your individual needs, this might necessitate several visits to perfect the fit. Dental Bridges for Multiple Missing Teeth For those with multiple missing teeth, dental implants still offer a viable solution. Fixed Bridge: Instead of individual crowns for each implant, a bridge is used to span the area of missing teeth. This bridge is anchored firmly to dental implants on either side of the gap. Natural Appearance: The bridge is meticulously designed to blend with any remaining natural teeth, restoring both functionality and aesthetics. Post-Procedure Care and Considerations Dental implants, anchored in the jawbone, function and appear much like natural teeth. Regular cleaning, akin to natural teeth care, and periodic check-ups at our dental office ensure their longevity. Our dentist will guide you on the proper cleaning procedure for implants . What You Should Know Cost: Dental implants might have a higher initial cost compared to other tooth replacement options. However, they offer long-term value, often being a one-time cost. Potential Complications: Though rare, complications can arise, such as bleeding, infection, or the implant not bonding to the bone. Our experienced team ensures the highest standards of care to minimize risks. Begin Your Smile Transformation Today At our esteemed dental practice, we believe in a patient-centric approach. We understand that every individual has unique dental needs and aspirations. Whether you are yearning for the freedom to enjoy your favorite foods, a radiant smile that turns heads, or the confidence to engage in social interactions without hesitation, dental implants can be the answer. This blocks nerve signals that cause muscle tightening, relaxing the jaw muscles. By reducing muscle activity, BOTOX® eases strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), alleviating pain, tension, and improving jaw mobility. This intervention provides temporary relief from TMJ-related symptoms, diminishing discomfort and allowing for better jaw function.</p>"

"text": "<p class=\"rteBlock\">Dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a special type of x-ray machine that is implemented in scenarios where normal dental or facial x-rays are insufficient. This variation of the CT scanner employs a special type of technology to generate 3D images of dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths, and bone in the craniofacial area, in one scan. These images allow for more specific treatment planning. The CBCT machine has an x-ray beam, in the shape of a cone, which moves around you to create a large number of high-quality images, or views. It was developed as a means to produce similar images to what a CT provides, though with a significantly smaller and less costly machine that could be situated in an outpatient office. Providing detailed images of the bone, the CBCT machine evaluates diseases of the jaw, dentition, bony structures of the face, sinuses, and nasal cavity. One shortcoming is that it does not provide the comprehensive diagnostic information available with conventional CT, especially in the analyzing of soft tissue structures such as muscles, glands, nerves, and lymph nodes. The CBCT machine can also be used for reconstructive surgery, cephalometric analysis, locating the origin of pathology, surgical planning for impacted teeth, diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), and for the accurate placement of dental implants.</p>"
