The Haven at Tomales is a family-owned and operated private ranch, home to Purebred Angus cattle and a flock of sheep. The ranch is about an hour and a half north of San Francisco and about two miles from Tomales Bay, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. Farm management has a focus on regenerative agriculture practices, such as carbon farming and wildlife habitat protection. The health of the Earth drives physical and mental health for all! We try to treat the land with respect in everything we do. Regenerative agriculture practices are used at The Haven to enrich and enhance soil health, watersheds and ecosystems. healthy soil is one of the most important substances humans can protect. Pure soil determines the amount of nutrients available to plants. Healthy plants and trees are restorative to our well-being by removing CO2 from the atmosphere and converting back to useful organic matter. ⠀ More than just pretty pastures ... the fields are fighting climate change! Carbon farming is an active practice at The Haven and the surrounding ranch. We love that our cows and their home can help reduce greenhouse gas in California. Specialized farming practices allow us to help the pastures our cows graze in to remove carbon dioxide more rapidly from the atmosphere. The CO2 is converted to plant material and soil organic matter. Our family has a deep passion for nature conservation. The Haven property has been at the forefront of soil and riparian preservation practices. We utilize sustainability enhancing tools, such as solar panels for a clean energy source. The hope is to do our part in preventing climate change. In fact, the family has been involved with third party agencies conducting the land use Climate Change Conservation Research Project.   Protection of California native and endangered wildlife species is a strong focus. We have worked with local agencies to create protected habitats for these special animals, such as a coho salmon preserve in our Walker Creek Watershed.   Each piece of conservation is uniquely important to preserving our precious resources. We know when different tools for land stewardship are put into practice together, they make a powerful and impactful difference for future generations to enjoy the beautiful property.  Walker Creek Watershed Riparian Conservation Protected habitat creates a new home for endangered coho salmon. The ranch has installed over 25,000 feet of fencing to create secluded native plant regions which have historically been in danger of being overtaken by invasive species. Grade stabilization projects were implemented to defend creek banks and the natural layout of the land.  This is also the location of educational and fun filled days for school children who are interested in land preservation.  Through Students and Teachers Restoring A Watershed (STRAW),  watershed restoration provides habitats for fish, birds and other wildlife. The practice also prevents creek bed erosion. Estimates of STRAW benefits, for every mile of creek restoration, benefits to the climate include the removal of approximately 290 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents from the atmosphere - every year. This is comparable to taking 55 cars off the road every year.  Purebred Angus Beef Cattle Solar Panels & Responsible Livestock Care Our pastures are home to free range and grazing Angus beef cattle and a flock of sheep. Grazing rotation plans allow the animals to enjoy a natural life style while caring for the land itself in a responsible manner.   The family installed a remote solar system to deliver fresh, pure spring water to livestock throughout the ranch. In keeping with being stewards of the land and providing ultimate comfort and care to livestock, animals have access to water wherever they roam on the ranch. Over 5,000  feet of water line deliver spring water through a system powered by the solar panels.  This property is unique in the vast amount of natural spring locations. No matter the season, natural springs bubble year round. Where springs occur naturally, developments throughout the ranch capture some of Earth's most pure and refreshing water for all to enjoy.  Elegance in Nature Request More Information Back to Top The Haven at Tomales, 900 Cerini Road, Tomales, CA 94971 707.878.2181 [email protected] © The Haven at Tomales, LLC 2026 | All rights reserved. We can't have healthy cows without abundant, nutrient-dense forages. We can't have thriving forages without soil that is cared for and respected.  We are thrilled to have a Carbon Plan written through the Marin Carbon Project.  As lifelong learners, our family is always trying to learn how we can do better for our livestock and the land that we steward. As part of the Marin Carbon Project, we partner with a team of advisors to increase organic matter in our soil. This promotes the growth of native grasses, but also increases carbon sequestration. We are collecting atmospheric carbon in our pastures.  Marin Carbon Project's vision: "Our vision is for Marin landowners and managers of agricultural ecosystems to serve as stewards of soil health and to undertake carbon farming in a manner that can improve on-farm productivity and viability, enhance ecosystem function, and stop and reverse climate change for the equitable benefit and enjoyment of all Marin’s residents." His search for the perfect spot is documented in preserved historical letters to his loved ones back East. The below are excerpts from his family. One fateful Sunday afternoon fulfilled this young dreamer’s vision. Abijah had been seeking a property for some time and failing to find a place which spoke to him. This day’s drive with his horse and cart was seemingly no different. He drove west from his parent’s parcel towards what is now the town of Tomales, near the ocean. When he came within several miles of the Tomales Bay shore, he could smell the exhilarating sea air and felt his spirits become uplifted. As he moved closer to ocean on his journey, the horse spooked at something obscure. Abijah wrote he never knew what scared the horse, but wildly galloping over the hill changed his destiny. By the time his horse was under control, Abijah was about a mile south of the main traveled road. A little disoriented, Abijah stepped out of the cart and surveyed the land. A strange feeling of familiarity and comfort over took him. He felt he had been here before. Even knowing it was impossible he had, he recognized this horizon he was scanning. “It is my place in the dream!” Even as he said those words out loud he couldn’t believe them. What stroke of luck – or element of providence – led him to this pasture? Just as he saw in his vision, the abundant green grass waved softly from the gentle sea breeze. The murmuring creek ran through rolling hills filled with wildflowers. Right here! This is where he would build his house from the dream. The house would face west, towards the setting sun. The barns would stand majestically on top of the hill overlooking his fields. The very next season after Abijah laid claim to his land, Abijah proposed to his best friend, Abby. He had not planned on doing it that beautiful winter day, but the timing just seemed right. Abijah had taken Abby for a ride to explain his plans for the land he loved so much. “On top of that little hill, I’m going to build a house seventy feet long and beautiful, grand barns! Along each side of the driveway, I’m going to plant a row of tall Eucalyptus trees. Two long rows! A driveway fit for a king! In the back of the house, I will plant a big grove of trees to break the wind. I figure 10,000 Eucalyptus trees in the shape of a sailor … then I’ll plant 5,000 Eucalyptus trees in the shape of an anchor. Can’t you see it, Abby? I will anchor the ground down to earth.” “But who is going to see it?” questioned Abby. “See it?” Abijah shook his head in frustration. It was not for someone, it was for the wind and the rain. “They will fly right past. We will create a Haven!”   The young settler achieved his vision. The prominent Eucalyptus grove of a sailor, sword and anchor still stand on the ranch today. Abijah’s original barns have also proudly outlasted the test of time. Within their walls, cows have cuddled with their young; baby lambs first wobbled to their feet; and many, many children played hide and seek in the sweet hay. The current family caring for this historic land has a passion for land stewardship and nature conservation. They have a deep respect for the land and strive daily to maintain the natural integrity of the land. Excerpts from the Woodworth Family History as recorded by Cory Stander, descendant of Parmenus Woodsworth, in his book “The Timbers of this House.” Thank you to the family for making the story of the Eucalyptus trees available for us to all enjoy. If you are visiting the beautiful West Marin area and would like to learn more about local agriculture, we would love to host you for a picnic and tour! The walking tour will start at the Historic Barn to give a brief background on Marin agriculture and the products you can readily include in your daily meals. This will be followed by a stroll through the sheep, goat, and cow pasture. They graze in the fields all year on a rotational grazing plan. After we say hello to the livestock, our adventure will continue through the forest - be sure to keep your camera handy in case we happen upon a grazing deer or flock of quail. The tranquil feeling and aromatherapy of the Eucalyptus trees mixed with fresh, coastal air is always a wonderful mind reset. We follow the forest hike up with a hike alongside the canyon overlook and conclude back at the Historic Barn. Upon reaching the Historic Barn, we have an outdoor space available for your use if you would like to enjoy a picnic with pastoral views.
