A client put a new roof on his vacant house on Walnut Ave. in Walnut Creek. In the course of tearing off the existing material, “Oliver”, the curious cat belonging to the neighboring Zuppan family, climbed up into the attic area of the home. He apparently got “roofed-in” by the workmen. Six or seven days passed with the Zuppans desperately looking for “Oliver.” The weather was extremely hot so it must have been 120 degrees or above in the attic. Neighbor, Andy Huang thought he heard a cat meowing and called the Zuppans. Late one evening I got a call from Ben Zuppan who asked me if I would open up the home and check for his lost cat. I raced over with a flashlight in hand and we opened up the attic. A frightened and dehydrated “Oliver” reluctantly staggered in the waiting arms of his owner. How he survived for six or seven days in those conditions is anybody’s guess. Ben Zuppan reports that “Oliver” is doing fine but is still just as adventurous as ever. Spring’s crazy seller’s market is beginning to normalize, though, just as we expected it would. Multiple-offer situations are declining because buyers are now finding more properties to choose from. In addition, multiple-offer “fatigue” has settled in and is a major factor in the decline. We are seeing numerous buyers who are loath to invest their emotions on a home they feel will have too many bidders. As a result, numerous buying opportunities are being missed. Even in a seller’s market, there are always buying opportunities. The smart buyer, with guidance from his sophisticated agent, will seek out properties that have been over-priced and thus likely to have had little activity. If they match a buyer’s requirements, these types of properties may be purchased without competing bidders and under market price. Nevertheless, the greater San Francisco Bay Area is still among the hottest real estate regions in the country. Job growth, pent up demand, fear of rising interest rates, and skyrocketing rents are still driving the real estate landscape. He closed over 400 in the Northgate Area of Walnut Creek, the most of any known Realtor in history! Torrey, a former CBS-TV sports anchor, was the top selling agent for all the Century 21 offices in Contra Costa County on 13 occasions between 1977 and 2008. Pete and Zack were the top selling team in the East Bay for Century 21 for 2006 and 2007. He earned his Broker’s license in 1980 and was named to Century 21’s International Hall of Fame in 1995 – the company’s highest honor. The International Hall of Fame Award, given to only 50 members worldwide, is based on public service, customer satisfaction and ethical standards as well as sales performance. Pete, who spent his early childhood in Piedmont, raised his family in Walnut Creek with his wife of over 40 years, Jean, a native of Oakland. Earlier, he graduated from Burlingame High School before meeting Jean at San Jose State University where they both graduated in 1970. Torrey listed one of his proudest accomplishments was his leadership in the “Save our Sports” campaign for the Contra Costa Association of Realtors when local high school sports were threatened with budget cuts in the 1990’s. Supporting community and school activities has always been a high priority for the Torreys. With over 47 years of combined experience the Torrey Team has expertise in all areas of the East Bay.
