With a BFA degree in Art and a BA in Art History from UC Berkeley, her ability to build beautiful art collections that reflect her client’s personality is well respected. She seamlessly adapts existing art collections to her interior design and assists her clients to both build and create powerful and iconic displays of their art— both in and out of doors. Kathleen provides an informed understanding of her clients style, arriving at exceedingly unique and beautiful solutions. Olivia also holds an Art History Degree from USC. Also a painter, she specializes in modern and mid-century art and design and is well versed in Roman architecture and all things Italian design. She holds dual citizenship in Italy and the USA and manages the production of bespoke art and design goods in Europe. Fluent in Italian and French, she is able to manage the production of goods as necessary as well as help to design or restore goods for her clients. At Tower Design we regularly create site specific art for projects. The tower design ream considers art as part of the design process. Kathleen has created dozens of bespoke paintings, sculpture, custom art lighting, custom fabric design, furniture and rugs along with outdoor installations. Both women lead the restoration and repair of existing historical and decorative architecture, murals and furniture. In this phase, we gutted and remodeled the kitchen and all baths, replaced floors, windows, fireplaces, decks and purchased all new furnishings. The photos include a separate guest unit and a super cool roof deck. Tower Design purchased and placed all furnishings and art, much of it vintage or custom made. Removing wall to wall carpets and faux marble and gilt paint on columns, we laid traditional large tile Thassos Marble floors and modernized and simplified the indoor and outdoor spaces. We incorporated the traditional elements as a backdrop to sleek modern furniture and added brightly colored touches to the now stark white interior. The dining room table top was drawn and designed by Kathleen McMullen and hand built in Florence Italy in the classic pietra dura technique. We purchased garden statuary of back to back lions and had those gilded in Salt Lake City, Utah for the base. The chars were bought at auction and gilded in Santa Barbara and covered with Zebra hides. With the addition of the Armand Jonckers vintage Brass Etched Cocktail Table and the brass base for the Bar Table, we brought in that feel for gilded neoclassical look in a much more spare way. We used mid-century modern furniture pieces as a nod to the actual era of the home, and created a comfortable yet formal setting for the clients many parties. She founded Tower Design to express her lifelong passion for blending art and design. Originally an Art Buyer and Art Consultant, Kathleen came into Interior Design with a unique perspective. She loves to start with art, and the precious items collected by her clients that represent their most cherished acquisitions and memories. From a child’s sculpture to a modern art collection, a careful curatorial sense of meaning is always a goal. Kathleen earned a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) in Art and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the History of Art & Design, with an honors degree in Art Conservation from the University of California, Berkeley. She did her graduate work at the San Francisco Art Institute and Stanford University, where she studied with famed artist Nathan Oliveria, and taught art and design at the college level. Olivia went on to earn dual B.A. degrees in Art History and Anthropology from the University of Southern California, deepening her understanding of visual culture, global aesthetics, and the human experience. She later earned a Doctorate in Chinese Medicine, which continues to inform her holistic, balanced approach to interior design. Now based in Santa Monica , Olivia serves clients throughout Southern California—including the greater Los Angeles area, Santa Barbara, Montecito, Ojai, and Malibu —offering bespoke interiors marked by quiet beauty, intentional layering and soulful storytelling.
