During his Friday Sermon on December 11th, 2015, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said that injustice is the “root cause” of so much of today’s unrest. So, at various public gatherings, His Holiness has expounded upon how to establish justice in today’s world. On one occasion, His Holiness noted that while the Holy Qur’an ( 42:41 ) calls for punishing injustice, it forbids transgression and urges forgiveness if forgiveness fosters reformation. In this regard, His Holiness presented the exemplary justice of early Muslims, despite facing bitter persecution. During Islam’s early days, slaves who had converted to Islam were forcibly laid on hot sand and burning coals, corpses were mutilated (and sometimes consumed), Muslims died from famine brought on by a 2.5 year economic boycott, women had had their legs tied to different camels that were made to run in opposing directions – ripping their bodies in two. After 12 years of persecution, instead of fighting, the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina. Even after migration, the Meccans constantly declared war on the Muslims. Yet after more than two decades of such persecution, when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) conquered Mecca, the Meccans were forgiven. In contrast, these days, there are reports of soldiers on foreign land mutilating corpses, extremists then exploiting local sentiment to fan the flames of hatred. Forgiveness aside, His Holiness cited the governance of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as ruler of Medina to validate the potency of Islam in establishing justice. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and many of the Muslims were themselves immigrants to Medina. Following the migration, Medina’s citizens unanimously appointed Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as their ruler. During Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) rule, His Holiness mentioned that Muslims and non-Muslims enjoyed equal treatment under the law, religious liberty and the right of mutual defense. This, in contrast to a society that, before Islam, considered fighting the only means of settling a dispute. Demonstrating how equality under the law was practiced, once, when an affluent woman committed a crime, many suggested that, given her high standing, her crime should be ignored. His Holiness remarked that Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commitment to justice was so lofty that he openly condemned this thinking and declared that no one was above the law, even his own daughter ( Bukhari ). His Holiness believes that these principles should also be adhered to at an international level. He explained that the League of Nations unjust policies helped spur WWII. Regrettably, the United Nations, with its permanent member nation status and selective veto power that absolves some nations of accountability, is also sowing the seeds of distrust; blocs are forming once again. The UN turning a blind eye to major powers preference for regime change has created power vacuums. Extremists have exploited the pain of the innocent, who have seen their homes destroyed and families killed, to fill this power vacuum. Even if these extremists are defeated, His Holiness explained that their ideology can spread, especially if their members scatter. Compounding this effect, far-right parties are increasingly polarizing the West. And as globalization has made the world economy increasingly integrated, no unrest should be deemed to have an isolated effect. In contrast to major powers peacekeeping efforts, His Holiness stated that the Holy Qur’an ( 49:10 ) explains that intervention requires impartial parties to negotiate between warring sides. Afterwards, if any party violates an agreement, unified force should be used against the belligerent. He further cited the Holy Qur’an ( 16:127 ) to advise that the coalition cannot transgress – only using force to the extent necessary to stop the belligerent. Otherwise, enmity will replace trust and such instability will only benefits extremists. He further cited numerous Qur’anic verses to outline model rules of war: as every innocent life is sacrosanct ( 5:33 ), wars should only be defensive in nature ( 2:191 ) and waged to end persecution ( 2:194 ), prisoners of war should be freed if at all possible ( 8:68 , 47:5 ), every avenue should be pursued if a belligerent party inclines towards peace ( 8:62 ) and any covenant should be honored if the enemy is peaceful and has honored past terms ( 9:4 ). Lastly, justice can also be established at a grassroots level. His Holiness grounded his position in the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to help both the oppressed and the oppressor. When asked how one can help the oppressor, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied that you should prevent the oppressor from acting unjustly ( Bukhari ). Thus, the public should hold their leaders accountable, not allowing vested interests and lobbies to sway legislation. And while each nation is justified in pursuing what is best for themselves, the public should peacefully criticize any nationalistic policies that create unrest or any political party injuring someone’s feelings; for similar reasons, the Holy Qur’an ( 6:109 ) instructs Muslims to not even insult the gods of other faiths. Moreover, the public should not vote solely on party lines, but objectively assess who will better their nation. If societies adopt these ideals, corruption will vanish, as will the potential for rebellion. His Holiness also encouraged people of different backgrounds to meet with one another as these interactions help remove suspicions and, in turn, people are more likely to ignore minor issues and exhibit more generosity. His Holiness stated that as injustice deteriorates trust, peace requires absolute justice ( Holy Qur’an 4:59 , 60:9 ), even to one’s enemy ( 5:3 , 5:9 ), whereby an individual is willing to bear witness against oneself or loved ones ( 4:136 ). But such justice will only be established when the most insignificant person realizes that for him to earn God’s love requires him to establish peace in every aspect of his life. Despite the founding declaration that all men are created equal, communities of color have faced centuries of systematic, brutal injustices. People of color have endured legal persecution in the form of slavery, Jim Crow laws, and now mass incarceration for low-level crimes. The highly publicized incidents of police brutality against George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake are a stark reminder that racial inequality is a daily fact of life for millions of black Americans and other people of color. So, too, the devastating impact of the Covid19 epidemic on communities of color has laid bare vast racially based social disparities in the United States. Even as protests roil America’s cities, lasting change is possible only through the political process, wherein communities of color must overcome significant barriers—including felon disenfranchisement—that impede voting and representation. As incidents of brutality continue and racial tensions escalate, many fear that indifference, and injustice, will continue to prevail. ‍ In this moment of crisis, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA—the nation’s oldest Muslim organization—believes that to heal the nation’s trauma, Americans must commit themselves to the principle of Supreme Justice. The 3-day gathering brought together over 2,000 attendees from across the country for prayer, reflection, and dialogue centered on the Community’s guiding motto, “Love for All, Hatred for None.” As part of the convention’s commitment to service, members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community held their third annual “Jalsa Cares” community service initiative on Friday, partnering with God’s Pantry in Pomona. Volunteers from the Community worked alongside Christian partners to pack 1,000 meals, which were distributed to families in need across Los Angeles County the following day. The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday evening interfaith guest session, where elected officials, civic leaders, faith advocates, and scholars addressed the gathering on the need for unity, compassion, and moral leadership in a divided world. The keynote address was delivered by Abdul Latif Balanta, a member of the national board of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA from Baltimore, titled “The Holy Quran’s Teachings on Global Peace and Unity.” Reflecting on his journey as a convert to Islam and drawing from the divinely-inspired guidance of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah and founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Balanta described the Holy Quran as “a living, breathing book” that challenges believers to reflect, reason, and act with moral integrity. He explained that peace in Islam is holistic, stating, “Islam at its core is about building peace — peace with ourselves, peace with our neighbors, peace with our God.” Addressing human diversity and coexistence, Balanta emphasized that the Holy Quran views differences as purposeful, quoting, “We have made you tribes and subtribes that you may recognize one another,” and added, “In Islam, diversity is meant to be a basis for mutual recognition and cooperation, not for arrogance or for conflict.” California State Senator Susan Rubio (District 22) reflected on her experience at the convention and the keynote address, stating, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard something so beautiful in a way that I could understand it. The message tonight was very clear to me… that differences of opinion are a blessing to society. That is beautiful.” She also praised the Community’s service to the broader public, saying, “We all share a moral responsibility to work together to reduce human suffering. Together I think that we could continue to take care of others that need us the most.” Bill Velto, Mayor of Upland, underscored the relevance of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s official motto in today’s world: “This year’s theme, ‘Love for All, Hatred for None,’ is not just a phrase. It’s a call to action. It’s a guiding light.” He added: “In today’s world, divisions are everywhere… but love heals. Love bridges gaps. Love changes hearts.” Olegario “Ollie” D. Cantos VII, Mayor Pro Tem of West Covina, commended the Community’s long-standing role in building interfaith understanding: “Your Jalsa Salana, with 38 years of history and for all that you have done through the years to build dialogue all across this country, has made a difference in showing the world how we… may indeed plant new seeds of peace and hope and understanding and love.” Joumana Silyan-Saba, Director of Civic Participation and Human Rights for the City of Los Angeles, emphasized the active nature of peacemaking: “Peace is not passive. It is not conformity or submission to injustice. Rather, it is an active and constant force that drives those who believe in the righteous and moral values of love, justice, and human dignity.” She also lauded the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s example and leadership of its global spiritual leader, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, saying, “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a powerful living example of these values.” Reflecting on the Jalsa Cares service project, Augusto “Goose” Dolce, Executive Director of God’s Pantry, shared: “It was wonderful seeing Christians and Muslims working together… families that woke up this morning not knowing where the next meal was going to come from were blessed by the work of our hands together.” He added: “When we share the work, that builds partnerships. And when we share a meal, we’re building friendships.” Academic scholar Professor Heather Ferguson, Associate Professor of Ottoman and Middle East History and Director of the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights at Claremont McKenna College, highlighted the deeper meaning of unity: “Unity is thus a practice — a way of being in the world — and it requires patience.” During the session, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was presented with official recognitions from the California State Senate and the City of Los Angeles, acknowledging its vast contributions to peacebuilding, interfaith cooperation, and service to humanity. About the Campaign While terrorists caused death and destruction on September 11, 2001, they also hijacked the faith of Islam. By painting a violent, militant picture of the faith, terrorists fomented suspicions of all Muslims.  But the truth is that terrorists do not represent Islam or all Muslims. Since its founding, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community advocates for the sanctity of all human life, as emphasized by true Islamic teachings. The Holy Qur’an teaches that life is sacred, and whoever unjustly kills a single person is as if he had killed all of mankind, and whoever saves the life of one person is as if he has saved the life of all of humanity (5:33). In his Farewell Pilgrimage address, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Even as this month, land and day of Pilgrimage are holy, so has God made the blood, property and honor of every human being sacred.” The “Muslims for Life” campaign is a nationwide effort with a simple message: the only blood Muslims should shed is to save lives.  Launched on the 10-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2011, the campaign has partnered with national and regional blood centers to host several thousand inter-faith drives across America.  To date, through the campaign and partnership with various blood centers including American Red Cross, blood drives have yielded a collection of over 70,000 pints of blood to save as many as 200,000 lives.  Every year since 2010, the “Muslims for Life” campaign hosts an annual blood drive on U.S. Capitol Hill for members of Congress and staff. The nature of the attacks and the scale of the conflict are gravely concerning as is the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe. His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has unequivocally condemned Hamas for the killing of innocent civilians and said they were completely against the teachings and principles of Islam. He also condemned the subsequent killing of innocent civilians by Israel, noting that its actions had exceeded all limits. His Holiness underlined the need to end hostilities on all sides with an immediate ceasefire, the need to allow humanitarian aid to reach all in need, and for a lasting peace to be secured based on absolute justice. His Holiness urged world powers to concentrate their efforts to de-escalate the conflict and work towards a lasting peace that must enable all people in the region, Jews, Christians and Muslims, to live in peace and harmony. Innocent victims must not be targeted “For the past few days, a war has ensued between Hamas and Israel. As a result, women, children and the elderly have been killed and are continuing to lose their lives without any distinction.” “Even in a state of war, Islam does not permit the killing of women, children, elderly and innocent civilians. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave strict instructions against doing so… In this recent escalation of the war, Hamas made the first move and attacked Israeli citizens. Leaving aside for a moment the fact that innocent people have been unjustly killed by the Israeli army, Muslims should ensure that they always adhere to the teachings of Islam.” “Where the Israeli army has carried out injustices, that is on them and there are better and lawful ways to address that. If there is a legitimate state of war, it should be entirely limited to the respective armies and never against innocent women, children, elderly and civilians. In this respect, the action Hamas took must be condemned.” “Whatever injustice and cruelty Hamas committed, the response to that or war should have been restricted to Hamas. However, the (indiscriminate) response of the Israeli government is extremely dangerous and it seems that this conflict will not end here. In fact, it cannot even be imagined how many innocent women, children, elderly and civilians will lose their lives. The Israeli government has suggested it will destroy Gaza and to this end, they have carried out severe and overwhelming bombardment. They have turned the city to dust. Now the most recent development is that the Israeli Government is telling a million or so people to leave (Northern) Gaza immediately.” The need to uphold justice and the rule of law “Thankfully – albeit with much hesitation – the United Nations is, at least, now raising a faint voice in response to this development. They have said it is against human rights and would create huge problems and so Israel should think about their decision. Rather than unequivocally saying that it is wrong, and instead of taking a stronger stance, the United Nations is making mere requests.” Major powers must support de-escalation “…it seems that major powers are bent upon inciting war, rather than ending it…An ordinary person cannot even imagine the war that may now ensue as a result of the injustices that have been seen. The major powers know the intensity of the damage it will cause, yet, they are not interested in establishing justice and are unwilling to pay heed.” Muslims must work together for peace Muslims must work together for peace “In these circumstances, the Muslims should at least realise their responsibility and should pay heed. They must set aside their differences and must establish their unity. In order to better their relationships with the People of the Book, if Allah has given the commandment to the Muslims to call them towards “a word equal between us and you,” by uniting over the Unity of God, then Muslims who have the same creed, should unite between themselves even more so by setting aside their differences. They should ponder over this and should establish their unity. This is the only way of removing injustice from the world and of fulfilling the obligations of justice and of establishing the rights of the oppressed. In order to do so, the Muslims must raise a strong voice in unison whilst coming together for those that are down trodden across the world.” “If the Muslims unite and are one, they will have a strong and impactful voice. Otherwise, the Muslim governments would be responsible for the deaths of innocent Muslims. Always keep the saying of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in mind – and this should be borne in mind by the major powers as well – that we must help both the oppressor and the oppressed.* We must understand the importance of this injunction.” “May Allah guide the Muslim powers so that they may unite in order to establish true justice. May the major world powers of the world also be granted rightmindedness so that instead of taking the world towards destruction, they try to save it. They should not make it their objective to simply fulfil their selfish desires. They should always remember that if and when there is destruction, the major powers too will not be safe from it.” * Note : Here, His Holiness referred to the saying of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one.” People asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)! It should not be that they become lenient towards one side at the cost of the other. If we all worship the same Creator, how can we usurp someone’s rights? While addressing the Annual Peace Conference held in London in 2011, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, cited the words of the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who said: “The task for which God has appointed me is that I should remove the malaise that afflicts the relationship between God and His creatures and restore the relationship of love and sincerity between them.” Commenting on these words, His Holiness explained that realizing we worship the same God creates an environment where love for one another trumps vested interests. For, if we all worship the same Creator, how can we usurp another’s rights? Similarly, religious differences would foster dialogue, not serve as excuses to discriminate against religious minorities or kindle wars ( Holy Qur’an 49:14 ). And if we all recognize God, our desire for peace will transcend our immediate surroundings and spread throughout “ the whole world .” Furthermore, with globalization, people have become unprecedently exposed to different cultures. In such an environment, leaders must enact just laws. His Holiness stated , “The best way to do this is that the world should come to recognize its Creator. Every form of loyalty should be linked to loyalty with God. [T]hen we will come to witness with our own eyes that the very highest standards of loyalty will be established by the people of all countries and new avenues leading us to peace and security will open throughout the world.” His Holiness also stated that not recognizing God has created societal unrest, the only remedy being for man to search for his Creator. 1,400 years ago, Prophet Muhammad and his followers demonstrated this principle in the face of bitter persecution. For more than a decade, he and his followers peacefully endured being verbally abused, boycotted, beaten, tortured and even killed because the Meccans viewed Islam as a blasphemous religion. After 12 years, the Muslims peacefully migrated to Medina to be able to worship their Creator; here, Prophet Muhammad drafted the Charter of Medina, granting religious freedom to all of Medina’s citizens. Even after the peaceful conquest of Mecca, in 630 CE, Prophet Muhammad forgave his enemies and still invited them to worship the same God he worshipped. Emulating this example, His Holiness stated that despite facing persecution in the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has never retaliated or sowed the seeds of unrest in any society. “For the sake of attaining Allah’s pleasure,” he remarked, “[we] always steer clear of all forms of disorder. And this is the conduct that one day will not only save the world from anarchy; in fact, it will be the guarantor for world peace.” This fundamental instills a sense of unity in mankind and encourages us to focus on similarities rather than divisions. So, nations must operate with each other’s interests in mind. While addressing the European Parliament in Brussels, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, noted that the requirements for peace and global unity are interconnected. Global unity begins with peace at home, as the state of each home affects the surrounding neighborhood. This environment then cascades to the town, the country, and, eventually, between countries. As immigration sits amongst those issues affecting every home, His Holiness noted that immigrants, “must enter with a willingness to integrate with the local people,” while locals must be, “ready to open their hearts and display tolerance.” He argued that a lack of integration breeds resentment, leading to policies that strain international relations. His Holiness further noted that as the inability to provide for oneself and one’s family is a major cause for immigration, establishing peace in war-torn countries is paramount. Simultaneously, immigrants should become productive members of society, and not become a tax burden to their hosts. Sourcing a saying of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) , “A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand the people are safe” ( Nasa’i ), His Holiness called for policies that promote mutual respect and outlaw hurting each other’s sentiments. This attitude can also preserve the European Union and foster a global cohesion on currency, trade, and standards of immigration. Individuals must also rid themselves of any sense of ethnic, religious or racial arrogance. Echoing the teachings of the Holy Qur’an ( 49:14 ), in his Farewell Address, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reminded mankind that, “An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white – except by piety.” Were individuals to follow this advice, it would be easier to notice that the growing immigration debate is a result of the global financial crisis – not a clash in belief systems. His Holiness noted that prior to the 2008 recession and credit crunch, immigration was a non-issue. But now, even relationships between Western countries are being affected. His Holiness acknowledged that a skeptic may ask that if Islam’s teachings can foster global unity, why is the Muslim world wracked with division and disorder? Indeed, if Muslim countries were united, they would not need to constantly seek foreign aid. His Holiness remarked that the state of the Muslim world indicates the need for a divine reformer, whom Ahmadi Muslims believe to be Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and the Promised Messiah. On another occasion, His Holiness cited the governance of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as ruler of Medina to validate the potency of Islam in establishing unity. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and many of the Muslims were themselves immigrants to Medina; following the migration, Medina’s inhabitants unanimously appointed Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as their ruler. His Holiness noted that under an impartial jury, Muslims and non-Muslims enjoyed equal treatment under the law and religious liberty. If a Jewish tribe of Medina was attacked, Muslims were duty-bound to defend them, and vice-versa. His Holiness concluded by urging mankind to make these changes and foster unity at every level: “If we fail in this task, then no part of the world will remain safe from the horrifying and destructive effects of war.” As globalization has connected the world in an unprecedented fashion, even seemingly minor unrest can send shockwaves throughout the world. As the Holy Qur’an states, “And break not the oaths after making them firm” ( 16:92 ). In this spirit of loyalty, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA launched a nationwide campaign in 2011 called “Muslims for Loyalty.” Hundreds of thousands of flyers were distributed, detailing Islam’s teachings on loyalty to one’s country. Some fear that as a Muslim is primarily loyal to his faith, a Muslim may sacrifice the best interests of his country for Islam. But His Holiness noted that, in fact, sincere patriotism is a tenet of Islam. Prophet Muhammad stated, “Love of one’s country is a part of faith” (Sakhawi). There is no conflict between one’s pledge to religion and their Pledge of Allegiance because exhibiting loyalty to one’s country of residence itself becomes a religious practice. If the state is unjust, a citizen can peacefully criticize injustice because a loyal citizen wants the best for their country. But as the smallest act of disorder or unrest has the potential to cascade, Islam also forbids fomenting any form of rebellion. His Holiness noted that if no change results despite informing the state of alleged injustices, the Holy Qur’an ( 4:98 ) instructs those affected to migrate to another land. Accordingly, when the Meccans persisted in persecuting Prophet Muhammad and his followers for more than a decade, Prophet Muhammad peacefully migrated to Medina. His Holiness also pointed out that loyalty to one’s country also demands a citizen to exhibit no hypocrisy. As an immigrant or a native, loyalty to one’s country forces each individual to behave in the best interest of the country. As personal interests and partisanship are cast aside, the society believes each individual has every other individual’s best interests in mind and peace becomes widespread. The most potent way to foster such an environment, His Holiness remarked, is for the world to link every loyalty to God. Then, the greater good takes precedence over short-sighted interests because if everyone’s loyalty is linked to the same God, how can any individual usurp another’s rights? Sadly, if this sage advice is ignored, individual states will create an internal environment of “distress and frustration”. In today’s interconnected world, deepening the divide will only further the creation of political blocs and threaten global peace. DOROTHY S. BOULWARE June 18, 2025 News Ten thousand American Muslims will gather in Richmond, Virginia, on July 3, headed to an annual convention. But they’ll also be engaged in service by tending to a neglected cemetery where African American graves have been forgotten and overgrown. Indeed, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community will spend the morning before their 75th annual convention cleaning headstones and clearing brush from graves that have received little care or funding, in stark contrast to the well-maintained section where white Americans were historically buried. “It’s a cemetery that’s been pretty much run over, hasn’t been cared for, doesn’t really get funding,” Zafar Harris, national spokesman for the community, tells Word In Black. The service effort is a continuation of the restoration work they began last year, which uncovered nearly 100 burial sites. Harris says last year they saw first-hand that the clean side is where “the white Americans were buried, so that’s why it was maintained.” However, the predominantly African American side was “not kept at all. And so we spent time, we toiled and sweated a lot in the heat,” to restore it. Violence in the name of religion is never justified, nor is insulting another under the guise of free speech. While addressing the 8th Annual Peace Symposium on March 26th, 2011, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, commented that curing extremism today requires accurately, objectively portraying the truth. To begin, His Holiness reasoned that Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entire life demonstrates that Islam and extremism are incompatible. During his lifetime, he and his followers were beaten, starved, tortured, some even killed. After 12 years of peacefully enduring such persecution, instead of fighting, the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina. Even after migration, the Meccans constantly declared war on the Muslims, compelling the Muslims to defend themselves. Per the Holy Qur’an ( 22:40-42 ), the Muslims waged a defensive jihad to not only protect their very existence but to protect all religions from annihilation – not just Islam. And after two decades of such persecution, when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) conquered Mecca, the Meccans were forgiven. His Holiness further noted that Islam spread to South Asia and the Far East without any violence. How could a religion win over much of the Eastern world without force while allegedly forcing others into its fold? His Holiness also presented the research of a terrorism expert indicating that the first suicide bombings were conducted in the 1980s. He asked if Islam permitted such attacks, why did they not taking place centuries earlier? In fact, the Holy Qur’an ( 5:33 ) declares the loss of one innocent life akin to the loss of all mankind. Moreover, non-Muslim countries involved in these wars never declared the wars to be religious in nature, helping both warring Muslim sides with weaponry and funding. So it is wrong to say these wars are in any fashion Islamic. His Holiness methodically rebutted accusations that Islam engenders extremism. His Holiness rejected the allegation that Islam punishes apostasy. For, if Islam sanctioned death for apostasy, why does the Holy Qur’an ( 2:218 ; 3:21 , 3:73 , 3:87- 92 , 3:150 ; 4:138 ; 5:55 , 5:62 , 5:93 , 5:100 ; 9:3 , 9:66-68 , 9:74 ; 16:107 ; 47:26-27 ; 63:2-7 ) address—but never sanction—worldly punishment for the apostate who repeatedly believes and disbelieves? His Holiness also reasoned that when the Holy Qur’an only granted Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) the ability to preach the message, how could any lesser Muslim compel anyone into belief? Addressing blasphemy, His Holiness reminded the public that the Holy Qur’an ( 4:64 ; 6:70-71 ; 10:109 ; 11:47 ; 50:46 ; 88:22-23 ) only permits Muslims to admonish – but never punish – a blasphemer. His Holiness quoted the Holy Qur’an ( 2:157 , 10:100 , 25:58 , 18:30 , 28:57 ) to prove that Islam recognizes and defends the freedom of conscience and religion; in fact, the Holy Qur’an addresses disbelief more than 150 times, yet never allows man to punish the nonbeliever. But while Islam does not punish blasphemy, it calls for restraint in speech because peace demands it. In this regard, His Holiness cited the Holy Qur’an ( 6:109 ) and presented the wise counsel of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) : “It is one of the gravest sins to abuse one’s parents.” It was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, can a man abuse his own parents?” Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied, “He abuses the father of somebody who, in return, abuses the former’s father; he then abuses the mother of somebody who, in return, abuses his mother” ( Bukhari ). His Holiness also mentioned how, on one occasion, a Jew complained to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that a Muslim had slapped him because the Jew claimed Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) was superior in rank to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) . Upon hearing this news, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sharply rebuked the Muslim as it had hurt the Jew’s feelings ( Bukhari ). “See how beautifully,” His Holiness commented, “[the] limits of freedom of speech and respecting honor have been laid down.” His Holiness also explained that political leaders and the news media, by conflating Islam with a tiny minority of extremists, commit “an injustice that is sowing the seeds of further division and conflict.” Instead, if such commentary was unbiased and covered acts of goodness instead of evil, terrorism would decrease. Unfortunately, such bias has led the public to tolerate extreme prejudice. His Holiness asked why Europe was so concerned with women wearing a hijab while accepting the headdress of nuns? And if, by wearing a hijab, states deny education to Muslim women, do they not realize that the country itself suffers because the talent pool shrinks? He further stated that if any mosque was the source of an anti-government conspiracy, the government must take “immediate action,” but alleging this happens only or always in mosques is wrong and creates unrest. Unjustly attacking Islam for the behavior of rogue Muslims only intensifies division, which extremists use as a wedge strategy. His Holiness further cited examples such as Brexit, the global arms trade, proxy wars, tensions between Europe and Russia, the admissions of a prominent diplomat that the invasion of Muslim countries was based on lies, and a potentially emerging cold war between America and China as proof that non-Muslims have also significantly contributed to today’s unrest. A prominent diplomat even claimed the major powers were working towards a “new world disorder.” Supporting insurgencies and toppling regimes creates power vacuums that extremists can exploit; rebel groups allied with major powers can even sell weapons to extremists. Instead, His Holiness advised major powers to help weaker governments combat extremism contingent on these governments respecting their citizens’ rights. He also noted the hypocrisy and danger of far-right groups falsely blaming immigrants for economic crises, “They too are extremists, who seek to poison Western society, by inciting the masses against those who have a different color of skin or who hold different beliefs.” As the world has become increasingly connected, unrest anywhere can create unrest everywhere. Thus, rejecting extremism in all its forms is of paramount importance. “Steer clear of all forms of disorder,” His Holiness advised , “[T]his is the conduct that one day will not only save the world from anarchy, in fact it will be the guarantor for world peace.” Extremism exists across the religio-political spectrum. Melissa Hortman Official Statement June 14, 2025 Featured Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA mourns the tragic, targeted shooting in Minnesota that claimed the lives of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. We are also deeply saddened that State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were seriously injured in the another attack. These acts of politically motivated violence have shaken our nation. Rep. Hortman was a cherished friend of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Since the opening of the Nusrat Mosque in Coon Rapids in 2015, she always joined the Community’s events with a warm, welcoming smile. Her support, grace, and compassion enriched our hearts and uplifted our spirits. As Muslims, we say ‘ Inna lillahi wa inna illaihe raji-oon ,’ meaning, ‘To God we belong and to God we return.’ “This is a shocking and deeply personal loss,” said Dr. Kamal Ahmed, Secretary of Public Affairs for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s local chapter in Minnesota. “Melissa touched our community beyond words. During the 13th National Peace Symposium on March 19, 2016, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, cited Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (may peace be upon him) , the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, to explain that religion aims to achieve two goals: to fulfill rights owed to God through proper worship and to fulfill rights owed to man by serving him as if he is a family member. Accordingly, contemporaries of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) describe him as “the most generous of all people” ( Bukhari ). Because of his love for Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and belief in the purpose of religion, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (may peace be upon him) also excelled in serving humanity. For example, he studied traditional native medicine and treated locals, irrespective of background. This, despite living in a remote 19th-century Indian village. Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (may peace be upon him) himself declared , “To fail to help a brother in their time of need or difficulty is utterly immoral and wrong.” Thus, Islam teaches that spirituality demands serving humanity. At other occassions, His Holiness cited various Qur’anic verses ( 2:84 , 2:196 , 3:111 , 4:37 , 47:39 , 51:20 , 90:15–17 , 107:3-5 ) to contextualize the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s philanthropy to non-Muslims – e.g. providing running water, establishing schools and scholarships, creating model villages with solar energy, disaster relief, establishing orphanages, establishing hospitals and clinics, feeding the hungry, etc. His Holiness explained that such philanthropy allows future generations to escape the grip of poverty and help develop their nations. Moreover, His Holiness noted that instead of earmarking portions of our budget for our staff, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community spends “every cent” in delivering aid and “not a penny [is] sent abroad.” To fulfill these services, volunteers sometimes paying their own fares and life devotees of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community sometimes spend decades, or even their entire lives, serving the Third World. His Holiness also cited the Holy Qur’an ( 2:139 , 16:91 ) to explain that this attitude of serving others with anguish for their well-being must be exhibited even towards those who abuse you. As Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (may peace be upon him) stated , “Allah the Almighty has instructed Muslims to act with justice and to do good to all others. Hence, you must treat even those people with love who have done no good to you. In fact, you should go beyond this and favor them and care for them as a mother cares for her child.” As Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once exclaimed that God had impressed the rights of neighbors upon him so much that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) thought God might class neighbors amongst a person’s rightful heirs ( Bukhari ), His Holiness further reminded the public that this attitude of service should be as expansive as possible. Lest anyone feel these comments or actions were made for personal gain, His Holiness declared, “ We seek no praise and no reward for such efforts because we are merely doing what our religion has taught us to do.” Highlighting these points also serves as a means to rebut allegations that Islam is a violent religion. If that were so, His Holiness asked , why does Islam instruct Muslims to be so service-oriented? Lastly, as the Holy Qur’an ( 14:32 ) instructs the doing of good “secretly and openly”, periodically highlighting acts of goodness can serve as a means to encourage others to follow this model or even strive to improve it. Let us all “vie with one another in goodness” ( Holy Qur’an 2:149 ) and, as His Holiness said , serve humanity in a manner that does not indicate an “end of our services” but a perpetual indication of what is to come. Muslims for Loyalty Islam requires every Muslim to be loyal to his country, regardless of the ruler’s faith. The Holy Qur’an states, “O ye who believe, obey Allah and obey the Prophet and obey those in authority from among you” (4:60). In Islam, therefore, loyalty first belongs to God, obedience to others’ authority being derived from Him. In Islam, since a sovereign can demand obedience from his constituency because he is responsible for their safety, obedience to such a one becomes obedience to God. The Holy Prophet Muhammad declared: “Whoso obeys the ruler obeys me, and whoso disobeys the ruler disobeys me” (Muslim); “Listen to and obey your ruler, even if you [despise him]” (Bukhari). Since its founding, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has championed the principle of loyalty to one’s country. The Community’s founder, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, declared: “Obedience to governmental authority is one of [Islam’s] imperatives” (Works and Speeches, Vol. I, p. 261); “To entertain ill-will against a government under whom life is lived in freedom and there is complete security and religious obligations can be discharged to the full is a criminal step and not jihad… Thus, God Almighty had established me on the principle that sincere obedience and gratitude should be rendered to a benign government such as the British Government. My Community and I are bound by this principle.” ( Tohfah Qaisariyya (“A Gift to the Queen”), 1897, pp. 9-10). Expressing loyalty to America, however, does not prevent peaceful dissent. Both the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and the Holy Quran guarantee this very right. Dissent, however, must be expressed within the confines of the law—no Muslim can or should take the law into one’s own hands. The Holy Qur’an states that creating disorder can lead to damnation, not salvation (2:2-16). Islam requires Muslims to not only obey their government, but actively love their country.  Prophet Muhammad instructed: “Love of one’s country is a part of faith” (Sakhavi; Safinat al-Bihar, vol. 8, pg. 525; Mizan al-Hikmah, Hadith #21928). The Community’s founder, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, emphasized: “It should be the duty of every Muslim to render true and sincere obedience … and offer heartfelt gratitude to such an authority and pray for their welfare.” The “Muslims for Loyalty” campaign is a grassroots effort to show gratitude to America for conferring fundamental freedoms that all Americans, including Muslims, cherish and protect.  Each year since 2010 on the Fourth of July, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community participates in hundreds of parades across the country to demonstrate to ourselves and our fellow Americans that love of one’s country is an essential manifestation of one’s faith.   Related Stories Muslims for Loyalty Join Us. (WHTM)– The Muslim community in Harrisburg gathered at the Hadee Mosque today to celebrate Eid-Al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast during daylight hours, so the festive lunch that takes place on Eid is the first time in a month most of the participants have been able to eat at a typical meal time. But, by increasing regional strife, the arms trade itself threatens the stability of the world economy. Arms trade proponents argue that the arms sales deter conflict. At various times, however, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has argued that the arms trade has only further destabilized the world. His Holiness asked that if the arms trade has a deterring effect and establishes peace, why are Western powers selling weapons to opposing factions – states and rebels – in the Middle East? Certainly, Muslim states mired in such corrupt practices are to blame. But if Islam is to blame, how are extremists able to sell oil to purchase such sophisticated weapons? When sanctions can be placed on oil-rich nations, what is stopping major powers from stopping the trade of extremists? Beyond purchasing weapons, these funds also lure poor families to give their children in exchange for money, growing the extremist base. In fact, if extremists’ supply-lines are cut off, His Holiness argued terrorist groups like ISIS will be defeated in months, not years; Muslim countries and their allies should press for this measure. His Holiness wholly acknowledged the responsibility of each government to look after the best interests of their constituency. But this responsibility does not absolve major powers from trading weapons that can destroy the peace of the world. “Quite openly and proudly, the major powers are trading arms that are being used to kill, maim and brutalize innocent people. Regrettably, such nations are focused only on attempts to boost their economy and to maximize their nation’s capital, without pausing for thought at the consequences. They desperately seek to attain the largest possible contracts to sell destructive weapons that, once fired, do not distinguish between the innocent and the guilty. They proudly sell weapons that make no exception for children, women or the infirm. They shamelessly sell weapons that engulf and obliterate towns and cities indiscriminately. Countless children are seeing their parents being killed in the most inhumane fashion and all they can do is wonder why their parents have been taken away from them. Thousands of women are left widowed, hopeless and vulnerable. What good can come of such devastation? All I see is a generation of children being pushed into the arms of those who seek to destroy the peace of the world. “Instead of being in school, getting an education, so that they grow into decent, law-abiding citizens, the only education an entire generation of children is getting, is how to master grenades or rocket launchers, how to do suicide attacks and how to wreak havoc in the world.” Curbing the arms trade, His Holiness said , requires obeying an instructive of Prophet Muhammad, “No one of you shall become a true believer until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself” ( Bukhari ). If we abided by this principle, how could we facilitate the arms trade? Dialogue and the fostering of communal thought are also necessary. “It is imperative,” he states , “that nations and their leaders not only focus on their own national interests but consider what is best for the world at large. Dialogue with other nations and communities is vital.” Otherwise , “The world stands on the brink of disaster.” Major powers, attracted by lucrative contracts, justify the arms trade. As the ramifications of such weapons can last long after an attack, nuclear weapons threaten peace for generations to come. Today, 9 countries possess nearly 14,000 nuclear weapons ; some of these weapons are 3,000 times more powerful than the atomic bombs the United States of America dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Nuclear proliferation proponents argue that nuclear weapons deter conflict. At various times, however, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has argued that nuclear proliferation has only further destabilized the world. On another occasion, His Holiness noted that today, the world suffers from economic instability and tension between nuclear powers, resulting in proxy wars and the formation of power blocs – an environment eerily similar to that prior to the onset of World War II. The breakdown of peace talks, exploitation of weaker nations, and increasingly bellicose language of leaders of various nuclear states indicate such weapons can come under the control of the extremely short-sighted and/or those with an apocalyptic worldview; negligence, such as in Chernobyl or Fukushima, too, cannot be ruled out. New “ low-yield ” weapons being manufactured for “limited nuclear war” scenarios sadly proves that far from deterrence being the objective, the market is more important than establishing peace; vested interests trump human rights. Even if deterrence is the alleged goal, His Holiness critiqued this logic: “The thousands of innocent children who have lost their parents, or have lost their own limbs, will never be convinced by such logic [of deterrence], nor will the thousands of women who have been left widowed, or the millions of people who have been displaced from their homes.” Were nuclear war to materialize, our concerns would not be limited to those suffering the direct brunt of such attacks. Radiation would render inedible drinking water and various foodstuff, future generations would suffer from severe defects and repopulation efforts in affected regions would prove onerous. And with ongoing bombardment and the rebuilding of razed cities posing extensive pollution challenges, His Holiness asked why the developed world was so concerned with climate change. In light of the world’s precarious state, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has placed the Doomsday clock at a mere two minutes to midnight. The clock, serving as a theoretical nuclear alarm, strikes midnight in the case of a nuclear catastrophe. Averting nuclear war, His Holiness said , requires obeying an instructive of Prophet Muhammad, “No one of you shall become a true believer until he desires for his brother what he desires for himself” ( Bukhari ). If we abided by this principle, how could we encourage the onset of nuclear war? Dialogue and the fostering of communal thought are also necessary. “It is imperative,” he states , “that nations and their leaders not only focus on their own national interests but consider what is best for the world at large. Dialogue with other nations and communities is vital.” Otherwise , “The world stands on the brink of disaster.” Rather than serving as a deterrent, nuclear weapons intensify calls for war. To give back to the community that welcomes us with open arms, this year, the convention introduces “Jalsa Cares” – a program to give back to the city of Richmond with a series of service projects the day before the weekend-long convention begins. On Thursday, July 3rd members of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA are partnering with the city of Richmond, alongside American Red Cross, to do a Clean-up of Historic Civil-War Era cemetery and of Wharf Street. Jalsa Cares 2024 Last Year in 2024, members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community convened its annual “Jalsa Cares” initiative, in which over 30 volunteers, in coordination with the City of Richmond and American Red Cross, spent the day cleaning up a garden at the local Veterans hospital, Pony Pasture Park at James River and the Evergreen and East End Cemeteries. The work was featured in Richmond Times-Dispatch . Civic, political, and thought leaders then gathered over the weekend to discuss peacemaking and religious freedom at the Jalsa Salana. The event drew over 9,500 attendees and an additional 30,000 online viewers. Participants engaged in discussions on resolving contemporary conflicts through peacebuilding and reconciliation. In recent months, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has repeatedly called on world leaders to pursue an immediate end to the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians in Gaza and to avert another world war. On Friday, June 28, the Virginia House of Delegates passed Resolution HR705, introduced by Delegate Joshua Cole with 49 co-sponsors, commending Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA on its 74th Jalsa Salana, peace initiatives and Jalsa Cares service project. On Saturday, June 29, special guests joined the Jalsa to speak to all in attendance. Mayor of Richmond, Levar Stoney, spoke to the Jalsa Salana attendees expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA choosing Richmond as the host city for this year’s Jalsa. “We were once known as the capital of the Confederacy and are now embracing our role as the capital of compassion.” Mayor Stoney then reflected on the service activities of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in advance of the Jalsa, saying, “We’ve seen universal love in action just this past Thursday during the Jalsa Cares day of service, when volunteers from this community selflessly spent the entire day serving others. It was you who cleaned up our neighborhoods, it was you who donated food. It was you who gave blood that will help save lives. And it is actions like these that remind us of the profound impact that community can have in healing. Together, we can create a world where love overpowers hate, where peace overcomes turmoil, where the light of unity dispels the shadows of division.” Virginia State Senator Lashrecse Aird emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in addressing challenges to sustainable peace. She said to the crowd, “There is power in our voice, especially when unified together. Challenges to sustain peace are faced by every generation and show up in many places and in many ways. By all accounts, the ones we are actively seeing occur right now are no different. But what is and should be different is how we respond…To me, that means I must commit and truly feel the obligations in this moment to uplift principles of peace in a world plagued by conflict.” Sam Rasoul, the first Muslim elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, addressed the Jalsa as not only a member of the House of Delegates but also as a Muslim and a Palestinian. Reflecting on the atrocities being committed against Palestinians in Gaza, Rasoul said, “While we are watching a genocide play out minute by minute in front of our eyes…I will tell you what I have been pleased by ⎼ the silver lining in all of this. We have seen so many of our friends, our allies, stand up, but in particular those friends from our Jewish community who have stood up and said ‘not in our name’…I know with all my Ahmadiyya friends, because of the persecution you have faced, because of the trials you have been through, that the calling is unique to the [9,500] people who are here today and the tens of thousands throughout this country.” Ahmadiyya Muslim Community conferred its 2024 Humanitarian Award to Rep. James McGovern for his long and distinguished career as public servant. Rep. McGovern has been a courageous and principled advocate for human rights, the rule of law and justice for all communities. He has spent his entire Congressional career defending the rights of the oppressed and vulnerable, and his work in ameliorating poverty and hunger is well known. Accepting his Humanitarian Award via video, Rep. McGovern said, “What is happening in Gaza right now is unbelievably tragic. We must save humanity from this destructive war. Last December, I joined your Voices For Peace campaign on Capitol Hill to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. I was moved to learn how your community in Israel was able to bring together thousands of Jews, Muslims and Christians to call for peace. Your approach is an example for us all. We must continue to push for a ceasefire and a return of all hostages. These are necessary steps that I believe could put us on a path towards a sustained peace.” Other special guest speakers featured Josh Cole (Member, Virginia House of Delegates), Marcia Price (Member, Virginia House of Delegates), Steve Schneck (Chairman, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom), Josh Paul (former Director, U.S. State Dept. Held ahead of the group’s 75th annual Jalsa Salana USA convention over the Fourth of July weekend, the effort brought members young and old together to clean parks, restore a historic cemetery, distribute 250 meals to those in need, and hold a session on fire safety awareness. Volunteers traveled in from as many as 10 states to take part. Jalsa Cares is the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s way of giving back to the cities that so generously host its annual convention — a public act of gratitude and service rooted in Islamic teachings. As volunteer Harris Zafar put it, “Service to humanity is worship.” At East End Cemetery — a historic burial ground for Black Richmonders dating back to 1897 — volunteers joined the Friends of East End to uncover more than 20 overgrown headstones. “This whole area was basically a thick forest,” said Amjad Mahmood Khan, national secretary of public affairs. “As Muslims who love and live in the United States, we want to give back to our community and show our gratitude by serving the most underserved areas.” “It makes it unique because it’s people who have been forgotten,” said Kaleem Wali, president of the St. Louis chapter, who helped lead the cemetery cleanup. “Being that we are Ahmadis, we have ‘Love for all, hatred for none.’ And so for Ahmadis to come out and take care of a cemetery that has been neglected — it means a lot.” The Red Cross, a longtime community partner, welcomed the group’s return. “We appreciate your dedication and your willingness to give to the community,” said Christy Carneal of the Red Cross Virginia region at the Jalsa Cares kickoff event near the James River. She presented a Community Partner Award to the local Muslim youth chapter in recognition of their commitment to service. City officials and civic leaders also praised the initiative. “We come together across all different divides to serve one another,” said Lawson Wijesooriya, chief of staff to Richmond Mayor Danny Avula. “That is one of the best ways to heal.”  Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as), the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, taught: “Never, ever restrict your circle of kindness.” From cemetery restoration to neighborhood cleanups, Jalsa Cares 2025 embodied that call — showing Richmond what Islam looks like in action: grateful, generous and grounded in service. In 1851, he married his paternal cousin, Hurmat Bibi but the marriage ended in a permanent separation. From 1864-1868, he worked as a government clerk in the court in Sialkot. The re-establishment of divinely appointed leadership(Khilafat) After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him), the institution of khilafat - or successorship - was instituted to serve as Muslims’ spiritual and administrative head and spread Islam. An individual divinely appointed to this office is referred to as a khalifa or caliph. In accordance with a prophecy of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be on him), following the passing of Ali, khilafat was replaced with various kingships and periods of despotic rule. "Wisdom is to avoid every type of vice, from associating partners with Allah down to the least impolite behavior." The First Khalifa (ra) Hadhrat Maulvi Haji Hakim Nuruddin The first khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Maulvi Hakeem Nuruddin was the most devoted follower of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. A talented physician and Islamic scholar, he was the first follower of Ahmad to take the Oath of Allegiance in 1889. He was khalifa from 1908-1914. During his khilafat , the Community established its first foreign mission in London, translated the Holy Qur’an into English and established its first madrassa (religious school). The Second Khalifa (ra) Hadhrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (1889-1965) The second khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad was the eldest surviving son of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and Nusrat Jahan Begum. In 1886, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad prophesied that God would bless him with a Promised Son, who would prove to be a boon for the Community. In 1944, Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad claimed to be this Promised Son. A renaissance man and skillful orator, his knowledge base included comparative religious study, philosophy, city planning, agriculture, Quranic exegesis, world history, linguistics, economics, political science, etc. (more…) "All men are equal, there is no difference between one man and another man. The Third Khalifa (rh) Hadhrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad (1909-1982) The third khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Nasir Ahmad was the eldest son of Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad and a grandson of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Earning his B.A and M.A from Oxford University, he was well-versed in political science and economics and served as the headmaster for the Community’s secondary school prior to his appointment to khilafa . He was khalifa from 1965-1982. During his khilafat , the Community established mosques in numerous Western European countries as well as establishing the Nusrat Jahan scheme, to build hospitals in schools in Africa. In the 1970s, he guided the Community past a nefarious state-sponsored attempt to delegitimize and persecute the Community. The Fourth Khalifa (rh) Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (1928-2003) The fourth khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Tahir Ahmad was the third child of Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad and Syeda Maryam Begum, and a grandson of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. An erudite and scholar, he penned works on religious polemics, philosophy, evolution, poetry, ecumenism, homeopathy, etc. He was khalifa from 1982-2003. During his khilafat , the Community founded its independent humanitarian organization, Humanity First, and launched Muslim Television Ahmadiyya, the only 24-hour Islamic programming television channel. In an increasingly flat world, no economy is immune from unrest. While addressing the 7th Annual Peace Symposium on March 20th, 2010, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (may Allah be his helper) , the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, explained that fixing the world’s economic problems requires following a directive of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) , “None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” ( Tirmidhi ). Based on the Holy Qur’an ( 2:189 , 4:59 , 15:89 , 20:132 , 83:2-4 ), His Holiness advised majors powers to craft equitable business dealings with weaker nations, to not covet weaker nations resources and to fairly compete for such resources. The world benefits if the richer nations secure a fair amount in return for their services and educate the people of these nations so they avoid the resource-curse and diversify their economy. Otherwise, resource exploitation and support of corrupt governments will stunt growth and foment unrest, which extremists can exploit. To curb the influence of corrupt leadership, His Holiness advised major powers to provide aid contingent on proper resource allocation and the enforcement of other pertinent civic demands. Economic experts agree that capitalism itself needs to change from being profit-driven to value-driven. His Holiness explained that if a child is worried about his next meal, how will time ever be found for an education? With today’s technology, the child will see what the developed world enjoys despite not having it himself – laying the seed for resentment. Since the masses are illiterate or uneducated, extremists can exploit this anger as governments are often responsible for a widening economic gap and injustice. Compounding this effect, extremists promise the child’s family money in exchange for the child. Thus, His Holiness said , “Poor nations must not be looked down upon, rather we should consider them as part of our family – our brothers and sisters.” As a practical example of the benefit of paying heed to the Holy Qur’an’s instructions, His Holiness noted that early Muslims were exemplary in their diplomatic and financial dealings. During the caliphate of Hadhrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) , the second caliph of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) , Muslims ruled over Syria. During this time, a tax was levied to exempt Syrian Christians from military conscription; also, no tax was levied on the poor. But when it became uncertain if the Muslims could defend Syria against Rome, the Muslims returned all the tax money to the Christians, explaining that they could not take this money if they could not defend Syria’s inhabitants. The gesture moved the Christians to pray for a Muslim victory. The example not only demonstrates Islam’s commitment to justice, but also proves that it is wrong to claim that religion and peace are incompatible. His Holiness noted how, as head of state, far from exploiting his subjects, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) established the first civilized society the Arabs had ever known. A people barely acquainted with literacy were instructed to teach the illiterate, including slaves and orphans. Literate prisoners of war were released if they taught illiterate people how to read and write; this also serves as a successful model for prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration. Arabs were constantly instructed to free slaves ( Holy Qur’an 90:14-17 ), and while under one’s care, a Muslim was to feed and clothe the slave with the same food and clothing he used himself. Sadly, more people are slaves today than at any time in history. His Holiness also noted that others become slaves of a parasitic financial system, which, through usurious lending practices, burdens borrowers with debt that can pass on to future generations. In contrast, Medina saw the creation of a taxation system to help the poor and avoid hoarding of wealth, as was a code of business and financial ethics to ensure fair and honest trade. Public sanitation and a city cleaning programme were implemented, citizens taught the importance of hygiene and physical health. Roads were expanded and improved. A census was conducted to identify citizens’ needs. Women, whom Arabs treated worse than animals, were given inheritance and divorce rights and became a source of honor for the family, as Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) declared that any individual who lovingly raised two daughters would earn salvation ( Mufrad ). When a Muslim expressed a desire to participate in armed jihad, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed him to care for his mother as “Paradise is beneath her feet” ( Nasa’i ). This, all despite Muslims being immigrants to Medina – fully integrated into the local society and contributing to its development. Today, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community emulates Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) example through its philanthropy . His Holiness also noted that Ahmadi Muslim girls across the world are doctors, teachers and architects and Ahmadi Muslim girls literacy rate in the developing world is “at least 99%.” If this sage advice is ignored, no major power should feel secure as experts believe a potential China-American cold war would be more harmful than the original Cold War. This milestone gathering centered on the theme “The Giving Hand,” focusing on what American Muslims can do to better their country through acts of service, compassion and civic engagement. The annual convention became both a vibrant celebration of American freedom and a powerful call for peace, justice and humanitarian service. The event drew a diverse group of lawmakers, policymakers, faith leaders and scholars, who praised the Community’s steadfast dedication to improving American society, even as Muslims worldwide face increasing hostility. Numerous U.S. lawmakers, from both parties, sent messages of goodwill and support, recognizing the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community as a vital force for unity and compassion. During the gathering, the 2025 Ahmadiyya Muslim Humanitarian Award was presented to U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) for his courageous advocacy for human rights and the rule of law. Accepting the award, Senator Van Hollen stated: “I want to thank you for your shared commitment to ending the humanitarian disaster and war in Gaza and for freeing all the hostages. At a time that is too often dominated by the loudest and angriest voices, members of your community have broken through the noise as a voice for peace, especially for your global Voices for Peace campaign and lifesaving work in Gaza by Humanity First USA. We must work to build peace, dignity and self-determination for all people.” Throughout the weekend, speakers underscored how the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s motto, “Love for All, Hatred for None,” and the spirit of “The Giving Hand” exemplify a vision of faith that contributes profoundly to American society. Virginia State Senator Ghazala Hashmi reflected on the significance of the convention’s timing and mission: “I had the honor of joining Jalsa last year. It left a lasting impression on me. We’re honored you chose Richmond for this event. What better time to celebrate than this weekend, when America honors freedom on July 4th, we celebrate a universal truth: Love for All, Hatred for None, the motto of the Community, championed by His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad,” said Senator Hashmi. Virginia Delegate Joshua Cole emphasized that the community’s ethos resonates with America’s own founding ideals: “As the Qur’an (49:13) reminds us, nations and tribes were created so we may know one another, and the most honorable are the most righteous. You belong here. This is your country. Together, we’ll continue to champion: Love for All, Hatred for None.” Virginia State Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg welcomed the convention to Richmond, stating: “There’s no better place than Richmond for this gathering, just a few hours away from the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’ is a principle we can all live by.” Virginia State Senator Saddam Salim praised the community’s seamless organization and spirit of service: “I’m struck by the incredible volunteer spirit, seamless logistics and warm hospitality. Your ‘Jalsa Cares’ initiative reflects your motto of ‘Love for All, Hatred for None.’” Virginia State Senator Kannan Srinivasan echoed the theme of unity: “Your community is truly an example of how love has the power to bridge any divide…I’m grateful for the service the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community provides—here in America and across the world.” Richmond Mayor Danny Avula commended the community’s global leadership for peace. “Your community’s local leader, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, is one of the leading Muslim voices for peace, and I hope the leaders throughout the globe will embrace that message.” Dr. Scott Weiner of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom highlighted the stark contrast between the community’s values and the persecution it faces globally: “Ahamdi Muslims face persecution in countries like Algeria, Egypt, Afghanistan, Yemen and Pakistan based on false blasphemy charges—heartbreaking for a peaceful people. We stand with the community. The Baitul Hameed Mosque is one of two mosques in Chino, the other is the Chino Valley Islamic Center on Chino Avenue at Yorba Avenue, which held an interfaith iftar on March 9.
