[email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 Elementary Overview During the Elementary years, students are empowered to take risks as they explore their capacity for learning in a safe and inclusive environment. Our skilled teachers will guide your child to think critically, practice collaboration, and assume authentic leadership roles. Here, students discover their individual strengths and challenges, and articulate a keen sense of inclusion, social justice, and fairness. They are encouraged to think creatively rather than memorize formulas and to connect knowledge to their own lives meaningfully. Our Elementary program provides a strong foundation in fundamental academic skills while also nurturing and guiding students’ social and emotional growth and development. The curriculum is rigorous, supportive, and developmentally appropriate. Study tours (field trips) extend classroom instruction out into the world, while cross-curricular themes and connections within all aspects of the program help our students bring learning into focus. Our instructional learning teams use a variety of methods to reach all children, including a combination of direct instruction, independent practice, hands-on learning, and cooperative group work. Request Information Inquire Online → What's Your Positive Equation? Learn More → Curriculum: Kindergarten–Grade 2 Language Arts The Lower Elementary Language Arts curriculum balances skill development, conceptual understanding, real life application, and empowers students to share their thinking through a thoughtful combination of individual, small group, and teacher-directed whole-class instruction . Our K-2 reading curriculum combines phonics, guided reading, and core literature, which together foster the development of essential decoding and comprehension skills, enabling students to tackle increasingly challenging texts. Explicit phonics instruction teaches students the decoding skills necessary to become proficient readers. Guided reading involves small, teacher-led groups in which the teacher supports and develops problem-solving strategies geared toward independent reading. In core literature, teachers engage students in texts that have been carefully curated around a connecting idea, central theme, or study of a particular author, illustrator or genre. Turning Point is dedicated to fostering independent, confident writers at every age. We facilitate student growth through a thoughtful combination of modeling, direct instruction, practice, and reflection. Students develop the skills to clearly and confidently articulate their thoughts in their own authentic voice. Our Writer’s Workshop model enhances our thoughtfully constructed, individualized instruction around writing skills, strategies, and concepts. Students also practice creative storytelling, personal narratives, and poetry, and they proudly publish their work. Our emphasis on regular student-teacher conferencing encourages students to take an active role in their learning and allows teachers to differentiate instruction based on each writers’ needs. Mathematics Across the Turning Point math curriculum, teachers guide students in utilizing strategy, discipline, and flexibility in thinking in order to develop mathematical habits of mind that lead to a deep conceptual understanding of numbers and equations. Students build a strong foundation of number-sense, helping them work towards understanding increasingly abstract tools, numbers, and symbols. Our anchor text, Singapore Math, reflects our pedagogical understanding that as students work with and manipulate numbers, they develop fluency and mental math strategies. Process-based lessons are presented in a concrete, pictorial, and abstract sequence, and fluency (e.g. sprints, skip counting, and sequenced call response drills) is included as a major component. In addition to our anchor text, we utilize a variety of multi-modal approaches such as project-based learning, interdisciplinary connections, games, and math centers in order to ensure that all learners are able to comprehend material in the way they individually learn best. In Kindergarten, students build a strong foundation in number relationships and develop their mathematical vocabulary, which is strengthened in Grade 1 with work on place value, addition, subtraction, and regrouping. In Grade 2, math is integrated into a variety of cross-curricular areas, and students develop critical thinking skills through experimental and experiential math activities. SCIENCE The Science program in Kindergarten – Grade 2 inspires intellectual curiosity and promotes environmental stewardship by involving students in hands-on, experiential learning as they explore and understand the world around them. Students learn how to form questions, make predictions, and experiment. By the time students complete Grade 2 Science, they have engaged in study of the scientific method, the engineering process, research methods, and scientific report writing. Social studies In Kindergarten and Grade 1, the social studies program centers on the social milieus most familiar to young children: self, family, school, and neighborhood. Students expand their capacity to understand self and others, and work cooperatively to problem solve and negotiate differences. In Grade 2, students explore geographic regions of the earth, learning how to use globes, maps, and compasses to bring context to the wider world. They engage in constructive problem solving, connect with similarities and reflect upon differences, acknowledge interconnectedness, and explore their capacity to become change makers and affect positive change in their classroom, school, community, and world. Spanish In Kindergarten – Grade 2, students build upon the Spanish language, vocabulary, and cultural instruction they began to explore in Preschool. Students develop listening comprehension, a vocabulary base, and verbal proficiency skills by engaging in imaginative, personalized, and inquiry-based activities. Song and rhythm, active play, art, and stories stimulate curiosity and engagement in Spanish-speaking cultures. Students explore themes related to self-awareness, empathy, and curiosity about their world as they work collaboratively to develop cultural literacy. Library and research Turning Point School’s Luis de Torres Memorial Library is home to a collection of over 10,000 print, digital, and multimedia resources. Through its wealth of diverse resources, the library aims to support students’ intellectual curiosity, appreciation of literature, and drive to become lifelong learners. In Kindergarten, students are introduced to book selection and check out, book care, and library arrangement. As students advance through the grade levels, research and media literacy skills are also taught, as students develop essential skills of inquiry, critical thinking, and reasoning. Technology In K-2, students learn how the responsible use of technology enhances learning by developing and honing skills in introductory keyboarding, digital citizenship, technology-supported project based learning, and basic programming. Inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity are developed as students apply their knowledge of technology and comput Private School in Culver City California | Head's Corner You are using an outdated browser. Read More The Hardest Lesson: Learning to Live Beyond Yourself February 20, 2026 | Dr. Laura Konigsberg Turning Point School is grounded in a liberal arts philosophy, often described as teaching students how to think. But in a culture where attention is fragmented and self-promotion is constant, a more urgent question may be what students learn to care about and who they learn to care for. Our role as educators is not to tell students what to believe, but to help them discern what is meaningful, what is trivial, and what is worthy of sustained focus. Through reflection, dialogue, and shared responsibility, students learn to move from reactive opinions toward values that orient them beyond themselves and toward a shared world. The way we educate them, with intention, empathy, and high expectations, equips them to navigate an increasingly complex world with clarity, courage, and compassion. And when they do, the world won’t just be ready for them, it will be better because of them. Read More Showing Up and Seeing Each Other September 5, 2025 | Dr. Laura Konigsberg In these first weeks of school, teachers and students co-create classroom norms and culture, shaping learning spaces where every student feels empowered to take risks and explore bold ideas. When students have choice, voice, and a sense of ownership, their engagement deepens, not out of obligation but out of genuine inspiration. We foster and model that spirit early in the year, because meaningful learning begins with meaningful connection. Read More How to Get Your Child Into High School May 21, 2025 | Dr. Laura Konigsberg Both of our children got into their first-choice high schools. They had multiple acceptance options when admissions decisions were released. We didn’t have letters of recommendation from well-connected family friends, nor did we know anyone on either school’s board. We didn’t hire an admissions consultant (and, to my knowledge, neither did most families in their grades). We didn’t make a donation to improve their odds. They applied to schools that were a good fit—and presented themselves as they are: curious, intelligent, lovely, funny, and imperfect. Read More Designing a Perfectly Imperfect Holiday Season Dr. Laura Konigsberg As we move into a time of gratitude with the celebrations of light that can help us through the winter solstice and into the renewal of the new year, we can simultaneously face the pressures of pleasing others, of reuniting with families and friends, and of making the holidays memorable and joyful—as well, perhaps, as the anticipation of disappointment when things might not feel as “perfect” as we planned. Read More Lessons from Election Season Dr. Laura Konigsberg It’s hard to ignore the swirling emotions that are building the closer we get to November 5, as the anticipation of what the news cycle might bring can lead to unease and uncertainty. At Turning Point, we have the anchoring responsibility of our shared commitment to children. In the coming days, teachers and staff will continue to provide a non-anxious presence that encourages students to access curiosity and compassion when exploring their own questions and feelings around the election. This also affords us an excellent opportunity to teach about the democratic process in age-appropriate ways. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 Early Childhood Division Overview The foundation for your child’s unique positive equation starts in our Early Childhood Division. In our nurturing, stimulating environment, students discover the elements that will define their growth through their years at Turning Point. They learn by engaging in free play, by making guided choices, and by valuing themselves and each other. Our Preschool and Pre-K classrooms are carefully constructed to inspire self-directed learning, to develop confidence, and to cultivate independence in our youngest students. Our Preschool classrooms consist of children from 2 years, 9 months through three years, while our Pre-K program is for children ages four-, five-, and sometimes six-years-old (depending on Kindergarten entry plans). All our teachers in our Early Childhood Division are experienced and expert observers, trained to determine each student’s stage of development, evaluate which tasks have been mastered, and determine which challenges should come next. The curriculum grows with the student over the course of their time in the Early Childhood Division and advances naturally as students continue from Preschool into Pre-K. The educational theories and practices of Maria Montessori—a philosophy that embraces the understanding of how children learn—lay the foundation of our Early Childhood Division. Work periods encourage independence and choice while maintaining a thoughtfully designed structure supported by experienced and specifically trained teachers. Students are stimulated and challenged yet given the latitude to learn at their own pace. They are taught all aspects of the subject matter, with plenty of time for repetition and opportunities to experience the natural joy of learning. In addition to time spent in their main classroom, Early Childhood Division students also travel to other areas of campus to attend Specialist classes such as Spanish, music, physical education, and library. In addition, students enjoy plenty of unstructured playtime in a supervised setting on our playground. Students practice social skills daily by sharing, communicating, and collaborating with others. A favorite activity for both our youngest and oldest students is the “Big Buddies” program, where Preschool and Pre-K students engage in authentic, inspiring activities with their Grade 8 buddies. Personal responsibility is also important. From pushing in one’s own chair, to using one’s words to resolve conflicts, students at a young age are learning self-advocacy and developing confidence. Work periods are balanced with humor and creativity. Truly knowing a child means understanding how they think about the world and how they communicate those thoughts. Turning Point School’s commitment is to the whole child’s intellectual , social , physical , ethical , and emotional well-being. We create a nurturing, stimulating, challenging, and supportive setting to meet the needs of young children beginning to explore their world. Careful guidance and direction are provided to inspire happiness, confidence, and independence while developing life skills. Request Information Inquire Online → What's Your Positive Equation? Learn More → Preschool and Pre-K Schedule Each day is unique at Turning Point School. Embedded in the daily schedule are myriad opportunities for students to practice and develop the elements that constitute their “ positive equation .” Arrival Students may be dropped off between 7:45–8:25 am. They are greeted by classroom teachers and friends and enjoy supervised play until classes begin. Morning Group Morning Group provides an opportunity for our friends to welcome each other, review the day’s schedule and “helper” duties, and set their intentions for the day. Music Music provides a wonderful conduit for creative self-expression. Turning Point utilizes the Orff Schulwerk method, a music and movement program that features singing, chanting, clapping, dancing, and keeping a beat, and the Kodaly method which focuses on developing rhythmic coordination and a sense of harmony. Students proudly demonstrate their musical talents and enthusiasm during our Winter Concert. Spanish Preschool and Pre-K students explore the Spanish language and culture with a dedicated Spanish teacher. Song and rhythm, active play, art, and stories stimulate curiosity and introduce beginning concepts of world language studies. Physical Education Young children are experts in play. Turning Point’s commitment to every child’s physical well-being starts in our Early Childhood Division, where our Physical Education specialists help students develop agility and coordination, practice teamwork and fair play, and learn new games and skills. Library Our Luis de Torres Library is a magical place for young children. Our Preschool and Pre-K students delight in their weekly visit to the library, where they hear stories, browse the stacks, and select a special book to borrow. Work Period Daily “work” time provides the foundation for our Early Childhood Division. The Montessori method honors the fact that children are naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. During work time, students enjoy a balance of direction and free choice as they engage in activities including puzzles, artwork, math, imaginary play, building blocks, and more. Playground Students engage in supervised, unstructured outdoor play with friends on the Turning Point playground, designed for fun and safe play activity. Multiple classes often interact, allowing students to practice socialization with new peers. Lunch/Story Group Students bring their own lunch each day and are encouraged to follow Turning Point’s guidelines for sustainability. Teachers read to students daily from a wonderful assortment of children’s literature and theme-oriented stories. Share Day Group Students have the option to bring in something special from home to share with friends. Nap Time/Work Time For our youngest students, an hour of rest time is provided. A shorter rest and afternoon work time is available for older students. Optional After School Care and After School Classes Preschool and Pre-K students may enroll in select After School Experience Classes . All students may participate in supervised After School Care until 6:00 pm. Want to learn more about our Early Childhood Division? Start the conversation. The interdisciplinary curriculum encourages students to adopt the adaptable, entrepreneurial spirit required to embrace the challenges of a rapidly evolving world. Students practice key communication skills by developing strong interpersonal relationships and mastering purposefully selected technology tools, allowing them to become self-directed learners who exercise critical reasoning. Advisory Our signature Advisory program does more than provide students with a daily check-in. It has its own curriculum designed to support the academic and social-emotional lives of middle schoolers as they experience a remarkable rate of physical, emotional, social, and cognitive change. In small group settings, students learn and practice essential life skills, such as study strategies and organizational habits. Each student develops a meaningful relationship with their advisor, assimilating key relational skills such as empathy, compassion, conflict-resolution, boundary-setting, assertiveness training, leadership, and mentorship. Advisory curriculum also includes health and human development topics, so that students explore self-identity and community in an environment anchored by a trusted adult advocate. Humanities Humanities students use the power of words to think, speak, and write critically. Social studies and language arts are integrated, and literature selections connect the curriculum to local and global communities, as well as to historical change and current events. Our students analyze perspectives by reading actively and practice the art of using their own voice in structured composition and creative writing. Mathematics Beyond developing a sophisticated fluidity and proficiency with numbers, mathematics students at Turning Point acquire the discipline of practice and learn to effectively utilize a blend of resources to gain proficiency, including technology tools and methodical notes. Students utilize these skills and tools to further their conceptual understanding; the end result is that they are able to effectively strategize, problem-solve, and provide well-organized evidence of sound mathematical arguments. Science In Middle School science, our students establish connections between the physical and natural world and their own lives. They explore earth science, biology, environmental studies, chemistry, and physics. Students are challenged to develop higher-level critical thinking skills through problem-based learning, cooperative group projects, hands-on laboratory experiences, and study tours. World Language Through our Middle School world language program, students build written and oral communication skills in the target language. In Spanish, students learn conversational language and grammatical concepts through everyday connections and community experiences. In Latin, students appreciate Latin’s influence on English and other languages and disciplines. Across the grade levels, learning is rooted in the cultural and historical contexts of the languages being studied. Community Leadership In Leadership classes, all Grades 7 and 8 students explore civic responsibility as it relates to their daily lives at school and their interactions with the broader community. Individual leadership strengths are identified and developed through a range of projects and activities, including mentorship and service-learning, empowering students to fully understand and explore their potential to contribute. Physical Education Active lessons in a variety of team games, nutrition, fitness, and basic physiology teach students the value of a healthy lifestyle while empowering them to achieve and maintain personal fitness. Self-confidence and problem-solving are fostered through emphasis on individual effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Athletics Teams Middle school interscholastic teams extend the physical education program as a means to foster students’ skill acquisition and deepen their understanding of healthy competition. A “no-cut” policy encourages participation and enables athletes at all levels to experience the benefits of team practice and play. League participation with various independent schools on the west side of Los Angeles includes sports such as flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, cross-country, swimming, cheer, and track & field. Electives Our Middle School Elective program includes a wide range of choices to enrich the core academic curriculum. We know that a diverse curriculum prepares students to be adaptable and accomplished global citizens and that students who think outside the box and take responsible risks improve their confidence and deepen their love of learning. Whether pursuing a passion or trying something for the first time, students are encouraged to confidently take risks in a nurturing environment. Visual Arts Self‐esteem is vital to children’s social and cognitive development and emotional well‐being. Middle School in particular can bring challenges to an adolescent’s self-esteem in the form of social comparison and competition. New research , however, shows that engagement in the arts through painting, drawing, playing music, or reading makes kids feel better about themselves more often. Understanding that art is a language through which humanity expresses itself, in Middle School students identify and develop visual voices and gain a greater appreciation for the creative process. Whether practicing specific techniques of Fine Arts or honing Photography skills, passionate young artists express themselves creatively as they explore the intersection of art and culture. In the MakerLab Studio , students explore a broad spectrum of project-based learning and design thinking activities where science, mathematics, and art come together with the help of the latest technology and professional tools. Language Arts To refine the art of communication, the Public Speaking and Debate electives foster students’ critical thinking skills so they may hone their research abilities and articulate sound arguments and cogent rebuttals. Creative Writing participants learn the importance of detailed descriptions, dialogue, and the power of observation as they create compelling works of fiction and poetry. Critical Thinking Youth for Change students learn to use critical thought Private School in Culver City CA | Out-of-School Experience You are using an outdated browser. Morning Care begins at 7:45 am and continues until the official start of the school day. After School Athletics As an essential component of the Physical Education curriculum, beginning in Grade 5 students are encouraged to participate in Turning Point’s interscholastic, after-school Athletics program. The focus remains on long-term health for all students, so our emphasis is on participation. With a secondary emphasis on skills acquisition and healthy competition, students also learn the skills needed to participate on high school teams if they so choose. Turning Point’s no-cut policy allows students to try new sports; nearly 100% of students participate in at least one sport by the time they graduate in Grade 8. The cost of After School Athletics is included in tuition. Grade 5 students participate in the Coastal Canyon League, a developmental league where students focus on healthy competition, skill acquisition, and teamwork, rather than the outcome of the games. In the CCL, there are no playoffs or win-loss records, and all students play equally, regardless of experience or skill level. Teams for Grade 5 include: Flag Football Volleyball Basketball Cheer Also, every Grade 5 student participates in an annual Track Meet Students in grades 6–8 compete in the Pacific Basin League against other independent schools on the west side of Los Angeles. Talent and experience now play a role in determining playing time, as do a dedication to the team, sportsmanship, and commitment to academics. Student-athletes are encouraged to work together in a competitive environment, pushing themselves and teammates to do their best work in pursuit of common goals. Each season ends with the PBL Playoffs, where students put into play elements of resilience, critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and collaboration as they compete for the championship. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 Community Global Citizenship Turning Point students are mindful of their responsibility as citizens of a shared planet. They actively pursue the formation of meaningful ties with their local and international communities. Equally curious about finding common ground and seeking diverse perspectives, students take seriously their role as advocates for cross-culturalism, pluralism, and ethnic inclusiveness. Responsible global citizens passionately explore world issues; they confidently communicate and respectfully engage in constructive problem solving and conflict resolution. Creative and critical thinkers, Turning Point global citizens are equipped with the tools and habits that will garner success in a diverse, interconnected, and ever-changing world. In 2015, Turning Point was awarded International Certification through the Council of International Schools (CIS). To receive certification, Turning Point was required to demonstrate proficiency in four major areas: student growth and leadership commitment; whole school development; an emphasis on reflection followed by outcome-oriented action; and the translation of international education into authentic project-based learning across the community. Student-Led Mentoring One of the benefits of a Preschool-8 model of education is that it provides built-in opportunities for students of varying ages to engage with each other in authentic, inspiring ways. Under the guidance of teachers, students in Middle School work closely with their younger classmates in Preschool and Elementary, developing leadership skills and taking an active role in strengthening the community. Mentors and mentees form close bonds while they engage in an integrated curriculum that includes academic problem-solving, with an emphasis on character development, fair play, ethical interactions, and positive leadership. Student-led mentoring programs at Turning Point are mutually beneficial; they allow older students to become empathetic leaders in a unique setting and allow our youngest students to gain confidence and learn from role models they are eager to emulate. As students progress through the grade levels, they naturally and eagerly transition from the mentee to mentor role—developing poise and self-confidence at a younger age than many of their peers at other schools. The bonds that are formed are strong and long-lasting, and the various mentoring programs become a highlight of the year for all involved. Service Learning Service Learning provides Turning Point School students with opportunities to take their educational practice beyond the classroom walls and consider how the knowledge they are acquiring might help support and sustain the wider community. When students are provided with opportunities to build meaningful relationships with others in their community—at home, at school, locally, and globally—they connect more deeply with the learning process and begin to realize their ability to impact change. While working to build a stronger community and healthier environment, students make inspired leaps of understanding in developing a sense of responsibility extending beyond themselves. Turning Point was honored as a Silver Level recipient of the California Green Ribbon Schools award through the California Department of Education. This award is inclusive of the school’s many community-service and service-learning initiatives, including those that reflect an ongoing commitment to programs that impact sustainability. In addition, it encompasses our commitment to environmental education, particularly in incorporating STEAM education, civic skills, and green career pathways. Circle Groups Turning Point Circle Groups provide a multi-age environment that encourages continuity and builds a sense of community among faculty, staff, and students. Circle Groups (formerly called “Family Groups”) at Turning Point are a long-held tradition; upon admission to Turning Point, every student is assigned to one multi-age group, where they remain through graduation. Each group comprises approximately 15 students plus four adults, spanning all grade levels and departments. Every Turning Point student and faculty/staff member participates in this program, from preschool through middle school, as well as teachers, administrators, and staff representing departments such as admissions, facilities, tech, development, and more. The intentional multi-age environment builds a sense of community in many ways. Younger students develop courage as they step out of their routines and practice collaborating with a new group of friends. Older students hone their leadership skills as they lead activities and mentor their younger buddies during group work time. All members of the Turning Point community feel inspired to explore, create, and innovate together as new memories are created. Meaningful bonds and trusting relationships are formed among children and adults who might not otherwise have occasion to interact during the regular course of the school day. Speaker Series Fostering GENDER-INCLUSIVE Schools: Courageous Conversations Series with Dr. Derrick Gay WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17 | 6:30 – 7:30 PM During this workshop for Turning Point parents/caregivers, Dr. Derrick Gay will continue his Courageous Conversations series by exploring inclusion and belonging through the lens of gender. Building on our ongoing parent education around racial literacy, and in alignment with the school’s professional development for faculty and staff, this workshop will provide common language and understanding of gender, research around what young children understand around gender at various developmental ages, and current challenges and opportunities that K-8 schools are currently navigating. Dr. Gay will conclude the workshop by providing strategies for parents to foster and sustain gender inclusion. We encourage at least one parent/caregiver from every family to join. Current caregivers can RSVP through the ParentSquare app. Dr. Derrick Gay is an internationally recognized Diversity and Inclusion Strategist for schools and businesses around the world. Dr. Gay has consulted with over 300 independent schools around the world and has served as a senior content advisor to Sesame Street over the past seven years to ensure that programming is grounded in research around what children at varying developmental ages understand about themselves and others. The Neuroscience of Stress: Naming and Normalizing our Response to Crisis (with Kate Sheppard) WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1 | 6:30 – 8:00 PM FOR CURRENT TURNING POINT PARENTS/CAREGIVERS Have you noticed how your brain responds to stress differently these days? What coping mechanisms kick into gear when something unexpected happens? How do you identify and process grief? And, most importantly, what does the path to strength and healing look like for you? We’ve learned from our own experiences and from colleagues at other schools that in many ways, fatigue and increased social-emotional challenges have made this year even more difficult than the remote learning period at the height of the pandemic; not just for students but for the adults in the community as well. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 About Us Welcome from the Head of School Welcome to Turning Point School! Since 1970 , Turning Point has been graduating students in Preschool through Grade 8 who are confident in their abilities, masterful in their achievements, and empathic in their worldview. I hope you will come to campus to meet our remarkable students, observe the teachers who lead and support them, and explore with us the elements of your child’s “positive equation.” Brain research shows that early childhood and adolescence are the two most critical periods of a person’s cognitive, emotional, and social growth. At Turning Point, we thoughtfully and purposefully construct a path for students to bridge these stages effectively—in the classrooms, on the playing fields, and in our various creative spaces. Our methods are research-based, our approach is systematic, and our outcomes are carefully measured. Turning Point is a positive community, and our students remain happily engaged from the time they arrive at drop-off until they go home at the end of the day. Yet, happiness is far more than an easy morning routine. It is what results from the exercise of personal strengths and virtues, guideposts that help us all—students, educators, and parents—make our way toward purposeful and courageous lives. When our students are engaged in enhanced, meaningful learning and the deep satisfaction which accompanies authentic growth and achievement, we can observe it on their faces and in their body language. We call this a “state of flow”— it makes them better able to select more challenging goals, perform better, and persist longer on challenges. It helps them navigate difficult situations more resiliently and inspires them to share their authentic selves and genuine talents with others. It is a profound marker of future success of all kinds and creates the traits we want to see in those who will, one day in the not-too-distant future, inherit our planet. Turning Point continues to evolve after almost 50 years of excellence, thanks to our robust partnership between school and family, which not only nurtures our greater school community, but promotes the well-being and happiness of others. Our community’s dedication to a larger, common good guides us toward noble purposes which transcend meaning we merely create for ourselves. I cannot think of a more profound compass to guide our myriad positive equations for achievement. I look forward to meeting you and your child. Warmly, Dr. Laura Konigsberg Head of School Parent of Jack (Class of 2019) and Miles (Class of 2023) Our Positive Equation Based on scientific research and the field of positive psychology, our positive equation for achievement encompasses the intellectual , social , physical , ethical , and emotional elements that drive each student’s experience and growth, from the very first day of preschool until eighth grade graduation. The Intellectual Elements As students navigate our rigorous curriculum, we encourage them to take ownership of their learning. While a thoughtfully designed scope and sequence guides our curriculum, we honor your child’s unique path. Personalized, strengths-based instruction means students experience the right level of challenge as they practice critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving—elements they will continue to utilize through high school, college, and beyond. Learn More The Social Elements Very few things happen in isolation. Having the aptitude to move comfortably among peers and to connect with those different from oneself are crucial qualities your child will need to successfully contribute to a global society. From day one, our students exercise leadership, inclusion, trust, and kindness as they learn to collaborate and to build healthy friendships. Learn More The Physical Elements Research reveals a significant correlation between physical well-being and success in learning. A balanced curriculum creates space for play, promotes agility and motor skills, and elevates sportsmanship. We foster in our students an appreciation for their physical selves, and dedicate intentional time to nurturing healthy habits. Learn More The Ethical Elements Growing your child’s ethical mind goes deeper than knowing right from wrong. As a community, we cultivate shared values rooted in integrity, equity, and empathy. Our students speak up for themselves, as well as for those who do not have a voice, and shoulder responsibility for their peers as they embrace their obligations as compassionate global citizens. Learn More The Emotional Elements Children travel remarkable and complex paths through childhood and adolescence. In our dynamic environment, students harness the power of emotion to assign personal relevance and meaning to their learning. By summoning the courage to test their independence, confidence, and compassion, students are able to see themselves in the best light—as great friends, deep learners, and true collaborators. Learn More Preschool-8 Model The Turning Point program, which spans preschool through eighth grade, honors the profound brain reshaping periods during both early childhood and early adolescence. Research shows that middle school students perform better academically and have a higher perception of their own abilities in Preschool-8 schools, where they feel safer, more confident, and more engaged. Turning Point is committed to a Preschool-8 program that produces talented, capable students who are not only ready to take on the challenges of high school, but are proud to have already made the world a better place. Our Story For over 50 years, Turning Point School has maintained a focus on the whole child, emphasizing the successful development of all facets of children’s learning: intellectual, emotional, physical, ethical, and social. The school began as a Montessori-based preschool in 1970, when a group of educators and business professionals strongly committed to the principles of developmentally appropriate education founded Montessori of West Los Angeles. Housed in facilities leased from the Leo Baeck Temple in Bel Air, the school had 125 students enrolled in its first year, with a combined Faculty and Staff of 18. By the end of the 1980’s, the school had adopted an independent model of governance with a self-perpetuating board, and the school’s name was changed to Turning Point School to represent the series of “turning points” through which the school nurtures and guides its students. In 1990, the school was accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges . In 1991, the school’s Board of Trustees created a long-range plan for the school, including a mandate to acquire and develop its own campus. In 1993, Turning Point School began accepting major gifts to fund the purchase, and the search began for a facility that would accommodate ongoing enrollment growth and the creation of a Middle School. On February 11, 2001, Turning Point School moved into its permanent home at 8780 National Boulevard in Culver City. Acquiring the character needed to thrive in a diverse and ever-evolving society, these young visionaries want to make a difference, so we champion their capacity to effect real change. By the time eighth graders walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, they have not only acquired the academic skills necessary to take on the challenges of any high school, but they are also determined to make the world a better, more equitable place. Request Information Inquire Online → Schedule a Visit Visit Us → Curriculum Each facet of our program is specifically designed with middle school brains in mind. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 The Emotional Elements Children travel remarkable and complex paths through childhood and adolescence. In our dynamic environment, students harness the power of emotion to assign personal relevance and meaning to their learning. By summoning the courage to test their independence, confidence, and compassion, students are able to see themselves in the best light—as great friends, deep learners, and true collaborators. Compassion Compassion occurs when our feelings and thoughts about others transcend empathy to include the desire to help. When we feel compassion, our heart rate slows, we secrete the “bonding hormone” oxytocin, and regions of the brain linked to empathy, caregiving, and pleasure light up, resulting in our desire to care for other people. At Turning Point, we help students develop compassion by providing genuine opportunities for them to be helpful and generous and by modeling compassion ourselves. Courage Courage is foundational to tenets of leadership and positive psychology, and research shows that when we act courageously, our brains release chemicals that reward us for bravery. Courage is not just about facing fear, but also about coping with risk and uncertainty. Courage allows students to take academic risks, to express original ideas, to manage potential disapproval, and to avoid peer pressure. Independence Independent learners are motivated to set internal goals to achieve; they actively seek to come to the answers, and are motivated to dive into topics because they truly want to understand more—not simply because they want to pass a test. Learning is not a straight path; independent learners capably navigate the process, less likely to become discouraged when they venture out on their own. Empathy At Turning Point, empathy is not just feeling sorry for someone or even working to help them. It’s consciously seeking to understand diverse values and rationales, going beyond “What do they think?” to “ Why do they think that?” Research shows while empathy is partly genetic, it can also be learned. A child’s ability to recognize and respond to the needs and feelings of others is based primarily on social factors, such as upbringing and environment. Gratitude In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness and better decision-making. Gratitude is more than being thankful. It does more than just make children feel good; it inspires more purposeful engagement at critical moments in development when their identities are taking shape. At Turning Point, we hold the Montessori principles of gratitude in high regard; we encourage students to recognize each other’s innate value, and we show our own gratitude for our students and each other. Purpose When students have purpose, they are driven by something larger than themselves. Often sparked by the observation that something is missing in the world that they might provide, students demonstrate a sense of purpose by connecting their learning to the outside world, engaging in advocacy and civic engagement, and asking important questions about ways to affect positive change. Motivation Motivation comes from vision, goal setting, and experiencing successes, but there’s a science behind it, too. Research shows that motivation is hard-wired in our brains; the neurotransmitter dopamine rewards us when we persevere to obtain something we want. At Turning Point, students develop intrinsic motivation—they are driven to learn not just to achieve a grade or earn a reward, but to authentically expand their knowledge because it is internally satisfying. Confidence Research shows that the most effective learning environments operate in the “sweet spot” wherein students encounter just the right amount of challenge. Working at the optimal skill level allows students to tackle more challenges because they feel confident and take ownership of their ideas. Even if they don’t accomplish specific goals, students internalize the lessons derived from their attempts and build the confidence needed to try again. A positive equation for achievement. Inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity are developed as students apply their knowledge of technology and comput Private School in Culver City California | About Us You are using an outdated browser. In 2005, the Board of Trustees seized the opportunity to control the property on the school’s west side through a long-term lease—allowing the school to more than Private School in Culver City CA | The Social Elements You are using an outdated browser. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 The Social Elements Very few things happen in isolation. Having the aptitude to move comfortably among peers and to connect with those different from oneself are crucial qualities your child will need to successfully contribute to a global society. From day one, our students exercise leadership, inclusion, trust, and kindness as they learn to collaborate and to build healthy friendships. Friendship Human interactions that create social bonds— like playing, laughing, singing, and storytelling —activate endorphins and oxytocin, the neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, that link us to each other. To call someone a friend, the relationship must be long-lasting, positive, and involve cooperation. Studies have shown that people who are socially connected live longer; more proof that it is important to nurture friendships. Kindness Being kind is more than just a display of good manners. A 2018 study published in The Journal of Social Psychology demonstrates that being kind to others, whether or not we are close to them, may be inherently rewarding for us and activate an evolved neuro-biological system involved in caring for others. Furthermore, observing kindness—rather than seeing a world full of stress and bad news— is a way of noticing the good around us, which can boost our mood. Respect Children build their sense of self-respect from their exchanges with others. When they feel valued, they develop a positive sense of self, which in turn allows them to hold others in high esteem. Research shows that our overall happiness is intertwined with how much we are respected and admired by those around us, which is why this is a foundational tenet in our community. Trust Meaningful school relationships based on trust allow students to feel safe to speak their mind, and to discuss triumphs and challenges with openness and honesty. Students who feel secure are more apt to make collective decisions, to take risks, and to rebound after disappointment. At Turning Point, students are given intentional, ongoing opportunities to develop trust—with adults and with each other. Inclusion Inclusion, as a foundational philosophy, is integral to our community and curriculum. We commit to ensuring that all school constituents feel respected and valued for being their full authentic selves. Numerous studies have shown that schools dedicated to inclusion and equity are strongly associated with a range of short and long term benefits for students, including the ability to challenge assumptions, think critically, empathize with people who are different from them, and work collaboratively to discover creative solutions to real world problems. Leadership When students are empowered to lead, they become architects of their futures and change agents in their schools and communities. They are more apt to take appropriate risks, seek out challenges, develop self-confidence, and self-advocate. Our students practice and reflect on leadership skills in authentic contexts with the support and guidance of trusted teachers and advisors. A positive equation for achievement. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 The Ethical Elements Growing your child’s ethical mind goes deeper than knowing right from wrong. As a community, we cultivate shared values rooted in integrity, equity, and empathy. Our students speak up for themselves, as well as for those who do not have a voice, and shoulder responsibility for their peers as they embrace their obligations as compassionate global citizens. Equity At Turning Point, we know a diverse and inclusive environment improves learning outcomes for all students and that good teaching—that communicates to students our faith in their ability to achieve—is integral to establishing positive relationships. In both our teaching and learning, we consistently apply research-based strategies and hone our practices in fostering equity and inclusion. Integrity Integrity and the qualities we associate with it—honesty, respect, authenticity, and social responsibility—are built through influences from all spheres of a child’s life. At Turning Point, students learn integrity in classrooms, on playing fields, at the lunch table, and in leadership roles, and so can adopt principles of academic and personal honor as part of their character. Advocacy Whether asking for help or helping a friend in Preschool, or taking a stand for oneself or for social justice in Middle School, Turning Point students are encouraged to advocate for themselves and for others. Our students are empowered to speak and act confidently to make the changes they deem necessary in their immediate and broader worlds. Our goal is for students to respectfully raise their individual and collective voices to take action on issues that have meaning to them. Global Citizenship Responsible global citizens passionately explore world issues; they confidently communicate and respectfully engage in constructive problem solving and conflict resolution. Turning Point students are mindful of their responsibility as citizens of a shared planet. Equally curious about fostering respect for differences and finding common ground, our thoughtful, empathic students explore ways to contribute meaningfully to their local and global communities. Accountability At Turning Point, students are accountable for their actions—whether the outcomes be positive or negative. We guide students to understand how they are successful and how adverse choices can be understood to inform better decision-making in the future. Empowerment goes hand in hand with accountability; when students are able to own their actions and decisions, they develop agency and become self-directed learners. [email protected] • Phone: (310) 841-2505 Strategic Priorities: A Positive Strategy Comprised of four main areas of focus, the following Strategic Priorities guide our school’s work over the coming years and serve as our roadmap for positive, adaptive change. Mission and Identity What is the logical evolution of Turning Point’s unique identity? How do we use our differentiating features to tell the Turning Point story? RATIONALE Since our identity anchors us and serves as our central guidepost for every decision we make at Turning Point, articulating a clear identity is at the heart of Turning Point’s future. We will define what makes our school unique, distinctive, and distinguished. At the center of this work is our mission statement, which will concisely capture and powerfully convey who we are as a school community. DESIRED OUTCOMES New mission statement that defines what is unique about our community No longer the “best kept secret” in West Los Angeles Strong alignment of pedagogical and curricular choices vis-à-vis our mission Community members can clearly articulate our mission and purpose Turning Point is considered a “thought leader” school in the conversation about the value of a P-8 education, locally and nationally. Academic Excellence How can we refine and articulate our outstanding, innovative academic program to align with our mission and identity? RATIONALE Turning Point is committed to an outstanding academic program featuring innovative teaching and learning, deeper understanding of content, and the development of students’ critical thinking and analytical abilities. We set a high bar of learning and ensure each child has support to meet our rigorous expectations. To prepare students for the future we must educate them for a rapidly changing world, and therefore, consider the long-term effects of globalization, the impact of biological and digital revolutions, and the benefits of establishing lifelong learning as a strategy for success. We want to further develop curricula to be thematic, process based, personalized, and intentionally sequenced. We will ensure that teachers have the tools and technology necessary to implement the school’s mission and to offer students dynamic opportunities to create and apply knowledge. DESIRED OUTCOMES Curricular innovations that foreground diverse and inclusive perspectives, multidisciplinary approaches, technological innovations, and critical thinking and analysis Aligned, dynamic curricula from Preschool to Grade 8 Continued professional development and evaluation program for faculty and staff, focusing on excellence Elevation of Turning Point’s reputation as an excellent school among all stakeholders: prospective parents, local community, high schools, prospective teachers, and the broader community Enhancement of Turning Point’s reputation among Los Angeles high schools by demonstrating and communicating academic capability among multiple dimensions: intellect, citizenship, empathy, self-reliance, leadership Students demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways: they can problem solve, articulate their strengths and challenges, make reasoned choices, think critically, empathize with others, and understand their capacity to make a difference in the world Financial Sustainability How might we further support and promote our values and priorities through financial and operational sustainability? RATIONALE Turning Point is redefining excellence through attracting, supporting, and retaining outstanding faculty, staff and administrators; delivering an exceptional program; providing competitive tuition assistance; and maintaining and upgrading its facilities. To achieve these goals, we must maintain sound business practices, wise management and oversight of our financial resources; make continual improvements to our infrastructure; and drive enrollment to meet the expectations of the operating budget. Creating a more inclusive financial assistance program will improve access for all students. We will further maximize fundraising potential and attain higher outcomes. Finally, we will leverage existing facilities and optimize staffing to advance the successful growth of the school. DESIRED OUTCOMES Fully-enrolled preschool and Kindergarten each year; enhanced enrollment in sixth grade; reduced attrition in Grades 6 and 7 Competitive faculty, staff, and administrative salaries Continuing the conversation in the community around strategic philanthropy and our endowment Exploring new sources of support, including corporate and foundation backing Enhanced fundraising to increase annual giving amounts and ensure full participation in our Annual Fund by all constituents Executing fundraising campaigns to support special projects and initiatives Continued excellent stewardship of Turning Point’s investment portfolio Culture and Community How do we continue to foster a highly inclusive, engaged community? RATIONALE Relationships are at the heart of a vibrant, thriving school community; they create the bonds that maximize student learning. A diverse and inclusive environment improves learning outcomes for all students. We will focus on equity and inclusion in our hiring and enrollment practices and in leadership and governance composition. In addition, we will support and maintain greater ethnic and socio-economic diversity in both staffing and admissions to ensure that our community reflects the broader demographics of Los Angeles. Strong parent partnerships allow students to be supported collaboratively at home and school and invite parents to become natural ambassadors of our mission. Alumni relationships keep former students and families connected to Turning Point. Good relationships with our neighbors create a solid reputation and thriving network among the members of our community. Strategic and collegial relationships with our partner schools, both locally and nationally, heighten the school’s reputation and position us as a leader in the field of P-8 education. Improving and expanding our modes of communication connects new families with Turning Point and informs current and former families about our transformative teaching and learning. DESIRED OUTCOMES Increased socio-economic diversity within our community and support for underrepresented families More outreach to and involvement of alumni in the life of the school Expanded participation of families in community-wide events, reflective of the diversity of our community Increased community partnerships with neighboring businesses and residents Enhanced capability of faculty and staff to address and navigate issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity Strong engagement with Turning Point parents, from onboarding to graduation A positive equation for achievement. Inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity are developed as students apply their knowledge of technology and comput Ethical Education | Turning Point School in Culver City, CA You are using an outdated browser. Our STEAM+ philosophy combines the STEAM and Movement Education models with play-based learning. Our code word for developmentally appropriate play-based learning is “fun” and the evidence for the efficacy of play-based learning is conclusive. After Care / Morning Care Morning Care and After Care help to fill the gaps between when a child can be dropped off and picked up, and when the school day begins and ends. Athletics teams for Grades 6-8 include: Flag Football Soccer Basketball Volleyball Baseball Softball Cross Country Track and Field Swimming Early Childhood Division 2¾–5 year olds Learn More → Elementary School Kindergarten–Grade 4 Learn More → Middle School Grades 5–8 Learn More → A positive equation for achievement.
