If you’ve lost a tooth (or a few teeth) due to injury or disease, dental implants can rejuvenate both your smile and your oral health. An implant is a synthetic tooth root in the shape of a post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. The “root” is usually made of titanium: the same material used in many replacement hips and knees, and a metal that is well-suited to pairing with human bone. A replacement tooth is then fixed to the post. The tooth can be either permanently attached or removable. Permanent teeth are more stable and feel more like natural teeth. The ideal candidate for implants is a non-smoker who has good oral health, including a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw, and healthy gums with no sign of gum disease. Single Or Multiple Implants Dental implants are versatile. If you are only missing one tooth, one implant plus one replacement tooth will do the trick. If you are missing several teeth in a row, a few strategically placed implants can support a permanent bridge (a set of replacement teeth). Similarly, if you have lost all of your teeth, a full bridge or full denture can be permanently fixed in your mouth with a strategic number of implants. Advantages Over Dentures or Bridges Conventional bridges and dentures are not fixed to the bone, and can therefore be unstable. This can make it difficult to eat or smile with confidence. Implants not only look more natural, but feel and act more like normal teeth, with a stronger biting force. And because they don’t directly rely on neighboring teeth for support, implants don’t compromise the health of your natural teeth. In fact, bridges are only expected to last seven to ten years, even less with root canals, whereas implants will typically last a lifetime. Post-Treatment Care Consider your replacement teeth to be the same as natural teeth. They require the same daily brushing and flossing, and the same amount of regular checkups. Just like your natural teeth, the better you take care of your replacements, the longer they will last. Our Dental Implant Services Include: Sinus Lift Augmentation: Often the sinuses will enlarge following loss of the upper back teeth. This can preclude placement of dental implants in the upper back areas of the mouth, since the sinus is an air-filled space and dental implants need to be surrounded by solid bone. A sinus lift augmentation/graft is a surgical procedure that restores the sinus cavity to its original size, and replaces the bone that has been lost as a result of the enlarged sinus. This new bone graft typically takes nine to 12 months to heal before the dental implants can be placed into the grafted bone. Autogenous Bone Grafting: Occasionally, the ideal areas for dental implants do not have sufficient bone quantity to support the implants. In these cases, it is often necessary to “borrow” bone from another area of your mouth and graft it into the deficient area. Often, the area of choice is from the chin or in the back of the jaw where your wisdom teeth used to be. Implant Site Development: When a tooth needs to be removed due to infection, it is not uncommon to have lost bone around the infected tooth. In these cases, various types of bone grafting can be done at the same time the tooth is removed to facilitate the placement of a dental implant at a later date. Computer-Enhanced Treatment Planning: We have special software on our computer that allows us to evaluate your dental CT scan in three dimensions for bone quality, bone quantity, and bone location, enabling the best possible placement of your dental implants. This also allows us to work closely and smoothly with your restorative dentist to ensure an ideal result where your dental implants are concerned. Implant Maintenance: Once your dental implant restoration is completed, it is important to keep the area clean and infection-free. Dental implants can accumulate plaque and tartar just as teeth can. Whether you have just one tooth replaced by an implant or several, a professional cleaning schedule will be necessary to keep your implants healthy. The time interval for these professional cleanings will be determined by your individual needs. The design offers fixed dentition if you have lost most or all of your teeth. Traditional dentures are held in the mouth holding onto the bone and muscles, or through the use of denture adhesive. They are removable and often uncomfortable, bulky, and after time become loose and ill fitting. All-on-4 gets its retention primarily from the four titanium implants placed in the jaw bone. It is solid, fixed, and less bulky than a removable denture. All-on-4® Treatment Drs. Nazanin and Mahsa Hakim work with top oral surgeons and labs to assure the highest quality outcome. Prior to the treatment, your oral surgeon will evaluate the quality and quantity of the bone by taking a series of X-rays and CT scans. If you are a good candidate for All-on-4 treatment, we will take a few models of your teeth to create a temporary fixed denture. You will then schedule your appointment for the implant surgery. On the day of the surgery, your surgeon will place four implants in your jaw and screw the temporary denture onto the implants. You will walk out of the office with a set of teeth while you are healing. The healing process can take up to six months. Once your surgeon confirms the healing is complete, you will return to our office for several appointments to be fitted for your permanent denture. Is All-on-4® Right For You? You may be a candidate for All-on-4 if you have enough bone structure to hold the implants. It is not appropriate if you are an active smoker or have been treated by certain bone density medication such as Fosamax. Sedation dentistry allows your doctor to provide a variety of dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients who experience anxiety when visiting the dentist. There are several benefits to sedation dentistry, including: No memory of undergoing the procedure No sense of time while under sedation No sense of smell or sound No fear or anxiety during treatment The safety of anesthesia services in a dental office has dramatically improved in the past decade due to increased specialized training. Our dental anesthesiologist is highly trained in the provision of all levels of anesthesia in dentistry, from light sedation to general anesthesia. Reasons Patients Choose Dental Sedation: Having difficulty getting numb Being too young to cooperate Suffering from tremor related illness Requiring extensive treatment needs Having an unmanageable gag reflex Feeling anxious to receive the necessary dental treatment. We understand these circumstances and will carefully choose the right sedation service and method of administration for each patient. Preoperative Evaluation We will thoroughly evaluate patient medical history and physical status at the consultation appointment. If necessary, we will conduct any additional consultation with your primary care physician, or medical specialist with appropriate medical workup. This is all done in order to optimize patient’s long-term outcome and assure minimal complication during the procedure. The Levels of Sedation We Provide Mild Sedation The patient is at ease and aware of surroundings during mild sedation, while in a more relaxed state of consciousness. The patient will still have the ability to respond to verbal commands and stimulation. Incremental dosing to reach the recommended dose is common, as patients differ in their needs and requirements for a treatment. Moderate Sedation Moderate sedation is categorized as a deeper state of relaxation, with responsiveness to light stimulation. Patients may feel drowsy and may sleep during the procedure. Our anesthesiologist assures safety during the needed level of unconsciousness. Deep Sedation During deep sedation, the patient is in a deeper sleep to avoid anxiety and discomfort. The patient will be breathing independently, with supplemental oxygen given in most instances. This type of monitored care is highly effective and allows the dentist to provide full dental care in complete comfort for every individual, regardless of previous dental experiences. General Anesthesia General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness where a patient cannot see or hear anything during a procedure. The medication can be administered through various routes, and can be done in both, a hospital operating room and the dental office. It is an extension of deep sedation, helping limit movement and discomfort during dental treatment. A highly trained and specialized dental anesthesiologist is required to provide this type of anesthesia to assure an absolute patient’s safety throughout the procedure. Postoperative Recovery Period The duration of the recovery phase after General Anesthesia depends on several factors related to the drugs used and the individual patient’s body response to them, age and general health. When the procedure has ended, the patient is usually transferred to the recovery room, until consciousness is regained, and the vital functions return to normal levels. Recovery of consciousness occurs usually within 30 minutes depending upon the duration of surgery. During the recovery period you will receive a follow-up from your doctor and written instructions. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, worn, or partially destroyed by tooth decay. They are “cemented” onto an existing tooth and fully cover the portion of your tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth’s new outer surface. Dental crowns can be made of porcelain, metal, or both. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong. Crowns or onlays (partial crowns) are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling. Unlike fillings which apply the restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth. Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. Your crown is then sculpted just for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed. You Might Need A Dental Crown If: The tooth has been filled so much that there is more filling than actual tooth structure. The tooth has had extensive decay and/or damage. The tooth has been broken. The tooth has a root canal performed on it. Adjacent teeth need crowns to support a bridge. A dental implant has been put in and requires a crown to finish it off.
