After some time in the making, La Ramona Family Housing officially became St. Joseph Center’s first fully owned and operated housing community. An important milestone in St. Joseph’s shared commitment to ending family homelessness in Los Angeles.  La Ramona represents a significant transformation—turning a once-nuisance motel into a safe, supportive, and thriving community for families in South Los Angeles. Through Project Homekey, St. Joseph Center partnered with the State of California and the County of Los Angeles to acquire and rehabilitate this property into 20 beautiful, family-focused transitional housing units.   St. Joseph’s Center is a long-time partner of United Way of Greater Los Angeles, and we are extremely proud of supporting and celebrating this life-changing milestone. Amid the dark times in the sector, the opening of La Ramona Family Housing is a shining light of hope for all of us who are committed to the mission of ending homelessness in Los Angeles. “We did it together, in partnership. This is a good day for Los Angeles!” said Dr. Ryan Smith, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s Center. “We celebrate this transformative achievement with every single one of our partners as we continue building pathways of hope and opportunity for families across Los Angeles.”  During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Kelvin Driscoll, Interim Director of Homeless Outreach Program Integrated Care System (HOPICS), thanked St. Joseph’s for giving us all “something to celebrate and a place where hope lives.” That hope is especially a reality for survivors of domestic violence and their children who have found a safe place for healing and a fresh start.   Just last month, Delorie, with her two young children, and Rosa, with her son, found a safe home at La Ramona Family Housing. “We have been here for a month now, and my kids are happy. We get everything we need,” Delorie said. Rosa is also thankful for being a resident at La Ramona. “We used to live under a tent in San Pedro Street, but thank God I got a place here where they make sure we have food and other services. I’m glad they gave us a space here.”  St. Joseph’s Center has helped more than 2,480 families facing housing insecurity with transitional supportive housing, provided 29,000 mental health services, and nearly 41,500 meals last year.   For years, United Way has believed in and supported St. Joseph Center’s mission to provide low-income families, unhoused individuals, and children of all ages with resources and tools to become productive, stable, and self-supporting members of the community. From providing grants for interim housing support to this year’s funding to keep its access center operating for unhoused individuals to access basic services such as showers, case management support, referrals to housing support, and more.   Before converting the motel, located near Leimert Park, into La Ramona Family Housing, this motel used to be a place used for human trafficking, substance abuse, and other criminal activity, but thanks to the vision of Dr. Smith, this place has been transformed. “This place is no longer a place of harm but of hope. When I see the families here, I see me and my mom, finding a better future,” Smith said.  Nandie, who fled an abusive relationship in Atlanta, arrived in Los Angeles thanks to a Spirit Airlines credit and $40 just a year ago. “Thanks to St. Joseph’s, I was able to stay here and get the support I needed. I am back in school, my son is in childcare, and I’m just grateful to all at St. Joseph’s for seeing me as a human being in need. Their staff were like angels to me.”  93% of families in La Ramona find permanent housing after the six-month transition program.  LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell praised this kind of family housing that allows the families to transition into permanent supportive housing but also to find employment training, therapy, and financial programs towards independence. “This is the best example of what housing first means. Amid all the other issues, Housing First works; research proves it. St. Joseph’s La Ramona is a testament of why housing first is the model we all should follow,” she said.  La Ramona Family Housing stands as a symbol of what’s possible when vision, compassion, and collaboration come together. Congratulations to St. Joseph’s Center and all its partners for turning a place of harm into a haven of hope.  STAY CONNECTED WITH UNITED WAY OF GREATER L.A.   📱Follow Us!  Instagram  |  Facebook  |  Twitter  |  LinkedIn  |  TikTok  |  YouTube     📩 Stay United, Stay Updated:  Subscribe for exclusive policy updates, resources, latest news, volunteering opportunities, and more!  Stay Involved First Name Last Name Email Subscribe so you can stay in the loop on our work, upcoming community events, and more. The program aims to improve accessibility, quality, and consistency of care, helping residents maintain housing stability and reducing the risk of them returning to homelessness.   California is facing a severe care crisis. Currently, nearly 159,000 adults over the age of 65 in Los Angeles County rely on In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS). Many of these clients struggle with navigating a tangled web of challenges to secure reliable support.  For older adults transitioning out of homelessness or living in permanent supportive housing, the search for a caregiver can take up to two years. Additionally, turnover for caregiver placements is higher than for any other IHSS position, exacerbating systemic issues and threatening access to care that all people deserve.  The Permanent Supportive Housing Caregiver Training Program will bridge this critical gap through 26 hours of intensive instruction on 16 specialized courses designed for IHSS caregivers working with the most at-risk populations. Program participants will dive into topics such as harm reduction strategies, de-escalation techniques, body mechanics, transfers, and lifts. These courses equip caregivers with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of mental health challenges and substance use issues faced by housing-insecure older adults  “This program is about more than just training. It speaks to a larger movement advocating for systemic change in how we approach elder in-home supportive services by creating a culture of care,” said Min Chang, Chief Executive Officer of Homebridge. “By investing in the education of caregivers, Homebridge and UWGLA are setting the stage for a future where individuals can thrive in inclusive communities, with access to the consistent and compassionate care that’s a human right.”  “Many older adults in supportive housing who experienced homelessness have limited social networks and often struggle to find non-family caregivers who are willing to provide services. This is particularly the case with Black and Latino older adults, who also experience higher rates of chronic health conditions compared to other racial and ethnic groups,” said Derric Johnson, Vice President of Impact and Equity of United Way of Greater Los Angeles. “This pilot aims to create a network of caregivers that are more directly connected to permanent supportive housing tenants, influence system improvements to prevent premature or unnecessary transitions to institutional settings or reentry to homelessness.”   About 43% of older adults experiencing housing insecurity report difficulty with at least one daily activity, such as bathing and cooking. Most IHSS clients rely on family or friends for care. For older adults in permanent supportive housing, those networks are often gone. Caseworkers and families often step in, sometimes without proper training and support.   In Los Angeles, thousands of individuals—including working families, students living below the poverty line, and retired seniors without a financial safety net—face housing insecurity every day. United Way of Greater Los Angeles responds by investing in daytime service centers and enhancing shelter spaces that provide temporary relief—along with stability, dignity, and a chance to rebuild for people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness, including seniors.  This partnership with Homebridge responds to immediate need while taking a proactive stance towards a brighter future for older adults living in permanent supportive housing – ensuring they have access to a pipeline of qualified caregivers. By addressing the training gap through sustainable solutions, Homebridge and United Way are championing a vision where all older adults have access to dignity and care, fortified by a well-trained workforce that understands the unique dynamics of the community. With trained, supported caregivers, older adults can live safely, with dignity, and without the risk of returning to homelessness.  About United Way of Greater Los Angeles    United Way of Greater Los Angeles is one of LA’s most trusted nonprofits, uniting people and resources to create pathways from poverty to prosperity for all people in the Los Angeles region to thrive. This not only reduces the time and cost required to earn a degree but also builds confidence—especially for students who may not see themselves as “college ready.” “Every single one of the high school -college partnerships is about which students or communities will be potentially not reaching, and how do we serve them? How do we make sure they have the information and understand that dual enrollment is for everyone,” said Kim Patterson, Dual Enrollment Coordinator at LACOE . “So, we stress partnerships because you have partnerships between the K12 district and the college district, but also between community organization groups, in this case, United Way of Greater Los Angeles, who might help you fulfill that vision. United Way’s Community College Success Initiative (CCSI) is grounded in equity and designed to support first‑generation students of color with the resources they need to thrive. Through tools like mentorship programs, resource fairs, and academic toolkits, CCSI programs connect students to mentors through the Mentorship Program, while the Way2Success Community College Resource Fair connects students to basic resources that help them secure housing, food, and other basic needs, removing barriers for them to stay enrolled and complete their college and career goals. The development of academic toolkits is central to the CCSI initiative. Besides providing students with resources directly, another key area of focus for the CCSI initiative is providing tangible resources and support to practitioners to support equitable access and information to families and students to be informed about the opportunities and to help dispel the myths of dual enrollment. United Way’s investment in toolkits such as the dual enrollment toolkit signals its commitment to supporting the prosperity of Los Angelenos. With the rollout of the Dual Enrollment Toolkit, more students will be able to understand, navigate, and confidently pursue college courses while still in high school.  To ensure the toolkit met real community needs, United Way convened a working group of practitioners, counselors, nonprofit partners, and students. LBCC took a deeply intentional, equity‑minded approach—engaging feeder districts such as Long Beach Unified and Norwalk‑La Mirada and hosting multilingual focus groups with students and families.  The resulting toolkit provides clear explanations, side‑by‑side comparisons between Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and step‑by‑step guidance tailored for families—including Spanish‑language versions to ensure broader access. The easy-to-digest format with striking visuals was also intentional in order for it to be as accessible to students and families as possible. Early Outcomes Show Strong Promise   LBCC’s dual enrollment program is seeing significant growth and improved outcomes. In the 2024–25 academic year:  6,989 students  participated in dual enrollment  121 course sections  were offered  Students achieved an  86% course success rate   For Black/African American students, enrollment increased by  500%  over five years, while success rates rose from 75% to 83%.  These numbers reflect a powerful truth: when students receive the right information, support, and guidance, they thrive.  A Scalable Model for the Region One of the most exciting outcomes of this collaboration is the creation of a universal toolkit that can be easily adapted by other districts. It has already gained traction across community college systems, including Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), and interest continues to grow statewide. The Chancellor of the California Community Colleges, Sonya Christian , has called Dual Enrollment “a game changer for college attainment.”   “Dual Enrollment programs provide a unique option for public high school students who seek to accelerate their achievement, launch their careers, and access high-quality free college education even before they walk the high school graduation stage,”  said the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond.    By investing in shared resources, United Way and LBCC are not just supporting one campus or community—they are building a scalable model for increasing early college access across California.  This collaboration with K-12 school districts and community colleges shows United Way’s broader commitment to creating pathways for college and career success accessible to all students —particularly those who have historically been excluded from these opportunities. And they can start now.  “The Dual Enrollment Toolkit was designed with students’ voices at the forefront, empowering them and their families to confidently explore their options and take that first important step toward higher education,” said Martha Maciel Serratos, Education P Privacy Policy - United Way L.A. Now, our communities must also deal with the looming impacts of H.R. 1, commonly known as the “Big Beautiful Bill, which will gut the safety net on which so many depend. According to the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), 19.9 percent of the County’s population of 10 million individuals live in poverty and another estimated 20 percent are considered working poor.  PPIC estimates that without a safety net of critical services, poverty rates could rise to close to 30 percent.  As an organization that focuses on poverty, we know that the face of poverty has changed over the years and that there is little understanding of the realities that families face. First, most families in poverty are working and have income – many have multiple jobs to make ends meet.  Second, social safety net programs keep many families out of poverty, especially children. With rising rents that consume the majority of a family’s income, access to food through CalFresh, access to healthcare through Medicaid, and access to programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit are critical to saving families from impossible choices and providing some financial stability. What’s at stake with this bill?  It Takes Food Away from Children and Working Families The bill slashes CalFresh—the federal food assistance program that helps families put meals on the table. In Los Angeles alone: Approximately 500,000 households depend on CalFresh. Without it, families will have to choose between paying rent and feeding themselves or feeding their children. No family should have to make that choice. It Strips Away Health Care from Millions Who Need It Most Medicaid cuts in the bill would leave millions without access to essential and emergency care. Here’s what’s at stake: 3.9 million Los Angeles residents rely on Medicaid today – that’s close to 40 percent of our population. It Eliminates Tax Credits for Hard-Working Families who contribute to our Economy   The bill eliminates the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for families who file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). These families: Pay federal, state, and local taxes, contributing billions to our economy. Are often essential workers, caregivers, and the backbone of our communities. This bill isn’t about numbers or sides—it’s about people, and the people in the place we call home. It’s about whether we believe that every child deserves food, every senior deserves care, and every working family deserves a shot at financial stability. In the coming months and years, we will see the full impact of this Bill on our communities and our nation, and we will need each other. While the divisiveness in our country can feel paralyzing and insurmountable, now Is the time to stand together.  At United Way, we have always been about working across sectors and joining individuals to create impact. Time and time again, you have mobilized with us to create lasting change and to focus on what unites us — a shared vision where everyone thrives and has their pathway from poverty to prosperity.  Your advocacy, giving and volunteerism is more important than ever.  So, let’s make sure we are checking in on each other.  Let’s continue to show up, speak out, and stand united because we know united is the way.  Stay Involved First Name Last Name Email Subscribe so you can stay in the loop on our work, upcoming community events, and more. Supporters and funders, including representatives from United Way of Greater Los Angeles, joined the celebration of the first wildfire rebuild completed by San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity since January 2025. “It takes a village to build a Habitat house,” said Paul Van Ast ,  Donor Partnerships Manager .  The structure was completed in just six months of construction with the hard work of 1,626 volunteers who helped with the build.  UWGLA is proud to support the completion of the first home rebuilt by Habitat following the devastating Eaton Fire. The East Pine Street property features two homes, a primary residence and an Accessory Dwelling Unit or ADU. This is the first of many Altadena ADUs being built by Habitat for Humanity with support from UWGLA. United Way remains committed to providing support and investments to address the long-term wildfire recovery efforts as a community partner.  “United Way of Greater Los Angeles is proud to support the completion of the first wildfire rebuild led by San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, welcoming back the Wood family to their Altadena community after the devastating Eaton Fire,”  said Derric J. Johnson, Vice President of Impact & Equity, United Way of Greater Los Angeles . “We are hopeful for the future of the Wood’s family as they work to reestablish what was previously lost. The United Way is committed to providing further support and investments to address the long-term recovery efforts as a community partner.”  “As we started talking with the community about what was most important for them, we realized ADUs were a huge part of what the community needed,” explained Bryan Wong, CEO, SGV Habitat for Humanity. “They’re cost effective, they don’t change the character of the neighborhood, and we can increase density without changing the look and the feel of the city.”   “I think we have the ability to get to build a hundred houses a year,” Wong continued to a big round of applause from the crowd. “We have seven other houses currently under construction. We are on track to build ten houses a month. Thanks to all of you, we cannot do any of this without you. As funding comes in, we will build more.” Wood, his wife Carol, their daughter Jenine and their son Ken Jr and his family all lost their homes in the disaster. For more about the family, click here . “My mother always said, ‘the best parties are in the kitchen,’” said LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, 5 th District. “This house is more than a rebuild, it is proof of what our community can do when it comes together. It is a symbol of hope for all who drive by and a symbol of love to all who have had the honor of helping to build,” said Candace Kim, project director, Altadena Builds Back Foundation.   Kim expressed gratitude to SGV Habitat for Humanity who walk alongside Eaton Fire survivors every day on the path to recovery even as some of them have been displaced from their own homes.  “The work doesn’t stop here,” she continued. “Thousands in our community still need help. As we rebuild from one of the worst disasters our state has ever seen, SGV Habitat for Humanity needs our support, they need our volunteer hours, they need our fundraising, because we want to see them succeed. They need our support so more families like the Wood family can return home. So together we can help Altadena build back!”   “I really appreciate all the help and the generosity extended to us, people have come together to help us at a time when we didn’t know where we were going, what was next or how navigate the system of getting things started,” said Carol Wood. “Habitat has been so wonderful to give us hope beyond what we even dared to imagine could happen. We hope for good things, but we’ve received great things, a great treasure, and for that we’re appreciative.”  “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Ken Wood added.  After presenting the keys to the Woods, attendees were able to tour both the primary three bedroom and two bath residence and the one bedroom and one bath ADU.   Taking it all in, the homeowners took a seat on an engraved bench to enjoy their favorite views of the Altadena mountains and palm trees from their new front porch. United Way of Greater Los Angeles is investing $425K toward the construction of 50 Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) for low‑income households in Altadena displaced by the Eaton wildfire. The first one will be completed next month. This investment is part of our Wildfire Response Fund, established in January 2025. To learn more about the Fund, read the community impact report here . Through the Wildfire Response Fund and thanks to the ongoing commitment of our supporters, corporate partners and donors, United Way of Greater Los Angeles continues to stand alongside survivors, helping them rebuild not just homes, but a brighter future.  Like thousands of others who lost their homes, Secada and her family still live with uncertainty. They debate whether rebuilding is even possible. Their love for the community remains strong, but the emotional toll of navigating the barriers weighs heavily.  “We would love to stay in Altadena, but we also have to center our wellness and health. Coming back is still an option.” For now, they remain in a long-term rental.  As a cancer survivor who endured a family loss before the fires, Secada’s grief after the wildfire was overwhelming. “At first, we were all in shock. The best thing I could do was get to work—help others,” she said.  Carola Secada with other fire survivors at a donation event at DENA Heals. Secada channeled her pain into action, founding DENA Heals as an emergency hub to provide resources and a safe space amid the devastation. Within days, DENA Heals began offering culturally centered healing programs for fire survivors. With funding from United Way of Greater LA and others, nearly  2,000 people  have received emotional support through Dean Heal’s offerings of yoga, meditation, healing circles, and more.  In June, DENA Heals joined five other organizations forming the  Wildfire Response Collaborative , organized and funded through the United Way’s Wildfire Response Fund. Partners include  LA Voice, Bet Tzedek, Project Passion, and My Tribe Rise , working together to provide financial and legal assistance along with emotional healing. The collaborative has provided support services to at least  8,000 fire survivors.   For more than 100 years, United Way of Greater Los Angeles has responded to crises—wars, disasters, pandemics—by uniting people and bringing resources to support recovery and resilience. Our experience allowed us to respond quickly with a roadmap for recovery. Thanks to our generous supporters, we were able to launch the  Wildfire Response Fund  within 24 hours of the fires and quickly distribute more than  $2.5 million  to  30 organizations  serving fire survivors across Los Angeles.   Brandon Lamar, founder of Project Passion and president of NAACP-Pasadena, has led efforts to provide food and financial assistance to at least 2,000 people with funding from the United Way Wildfire Response Fund.   Brandon Lamar “The day after the fire, we had over 200 volunteers that came to the relief drive to really help their own community. These are people that have lost their homes, were displaced by the fire, and still they decided to come together and give back to their community,” Lamar said.  “That showed the real heart of our Altadena community. The way we stand together and uplift each other.”  “We are values-aligned. Even with different methods, we share the same vision. We come to that space with creativity and hope,” Secada said of the collaboration with Lamar’s and the other organizations.   In the months ahead, the collaborative is working to develop a “People’s Action Plan,” a community-driven framework focused on co-creating solutions with residents that shape policies and projects impacting their neighborhoods. This work is facilitated by Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI), with the objective of creating a build/design blueprint for a public space based on what community members articulate as their current needs and preservation goals.  As we look ahead to 2026 and beyond, our mission is clear: to restore housing stability, foster collective healing, and create a stronger, more resilient Altadena and Los Angeles region. These blazes consumed homes, businesses and entire neighborhoods, forcing mass evacuations, and leaving deep physical and emotional scars on thousands of families. Together, the fires destroyed more than 16,000 structures and claimed precious lives.   At United Way of Greater Los Angeles, our first priority in that chaotic aftermath was to stand with those who were hurting most. Within a day of the fires’ ignition, we launched the  Wildfire Response Fund  — a dedicated resource to provide immediate relief and support long-term recovery for those whose lives and livelihoods were upended.   Because of the generosity of this community — neighbors, businesses, donors, and partners — more than  2,800 individual supporters and more than 90 corporate and foundation partners  answered the call. Together we raised critical resources to support survivors, low-income households, people experiencing homelessness, community organizations on the frontlines, and impacted small businesses.   In Phase 1 of our Fund, we concentrated on urgent needs: food, shelter, case management, and support for families still reeling from displacement and loss. In Phase 2, we began investing in  community-driven rebuilding initiatives  — prioritizing locally-led organizations and recovery efforts shaped by those who live and work in the places most affected.   What we’ve learned this year is profound: disasters do not affect all communities equally. Altadena — a community rich in history, culture, and homeownership across generations — saw many working- and middle-class families displaced, grappling not just with physical loss but with the deep inequities that shape access to insurance, recovery capital, and long-term stability.   Yet, as we reflect, we also see  courage in recovery . Families are beginning to rebuild. Local nonprofits and community leaders have stepped forward to support mental health, housing assistance, job placement, and financial navigation. Local businesses that once served as neighborhood hubs are finding ways to reopen their doors. These aren’t just early signs of reconstruction — they are expressions of resilience and hope.  Still, our work is far from done.  We also honor those we lost. We remember the neighbors who will never return home, the families forever altered, and the heroes who worked around the clock to protect lives. Their memory fuels our commitment.  To every partner, supporter, and neighbor — thank you for showing up with generosity and heart. To the many still in the difficult stages of recovery, know this: United Way of Greater Los Angeles stands with you for the long haul. We believe in a future where every family has the support they need to recover, rebuild, and thrive.  Together, we are building a more resilient, equitable Los Angeles.  Stay Involved First Name Last Name Email Subscribe so you can stay in the loop on our work, upcoming community events, and more. However, the homeless service sector in Los Angeles is currently facing a unique set of challenges. United Way of Greater Los Angeles recently hosted a virtual technical assistance webinar entitled “Planning During Funding Transitions” with Wahid Ahmed, United Way of Greater Los Angeles, and financial expert Claire Knowlton, Claire Knowlton Consulting, to discuss how United Way’ homelessness service partners can navigate these tumultuous times.  Understanding Measure A   Last year, LA County voters passed Measure A, a landmark sales tax initiative supporting homelessness services and affordable housing. While this is a significant win for long-term planning, its passage does not eliminate the ongoing fiscal challenges within the public sector.  What it is:  A half-cent sales tax that replaces the expiring Measure H.  The Benefit:  Unlike its predecessor, Measure A does not “sunset” (expire). This allows for long-term bonding and the sustained production of affordable housing.  The Allocation:    64% goes to homeless services (outreach, interim housing, rental assistance).  35% goes to affordable housing production and prevention.  Projected Deficits for Homelessness and Housing   Although Measure A continues to be a vital resource in LA County, declining sales tax revenue, rising program costs, and significant cuts to state and federal funding have created a significant deficit.  The LA County Department of Homeless Services and Housing needs $865 million to maintain all currently funded efforts in the next fiscal year, but is currently projecting $562 million, leaving a $303 million gap. The LA County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA) is projected to need $372 million and will have a $10 million deficit.  How We are Leading Through Crisis   When public funding shifts, our community-based partners don’t just wait for the dust to settle. Knowlton shared how organizations are “game-planning” to protect their mission and staff.  1. Scenario Planning   Organizations are looking at multiple potential futures rather than just one. This includes:  Trigger-Based Planning:  Deciding now that  “If we don’t raise $X by July 1st, we will pivot Program Y.”   Boundary Mapping:  Exploring “edge cases”, or the absolute best and worst scenarios to find a stable middle path.  ABC Scenarios:  Modeling what services look like with a 10%, 25%, or 50% revenue reduction.  2. Radical Transparency   In times of crisis, information vacuums lead to fear. We are encouraging our partners to be proactively transparent with their staff and the public. By naming what is at risk, we can solve problems collectively rather than in isolation.  3. Advocacy and Action   The scarcity we see is often a result of policy decisions. While we manage the current budget deficits, we remain committed to advocating for government funding that works for the people who need it most.  Why Support Matters   Philanthropy cannot fill the deficit alone. That is the scale only public dollars can reach. However, private donations serve as the catalyst. Donations allow organizations to remain open while they re-strategize. It provides flexible capital that public contracts often lack, allowing for innovation and the retention of a skilled workforce that took years to build.  United Way of Greater Los Angeles is committed to staying close to our partners, understanding their needs, and ensuring every dollar you give is used to sustain the backbone of housing solutions.  Stay Involved First Name Last Name Email Subscribe so you can stay in the loop on our work, upcoming community events, and more. What began as a partnership rooted in shared values has grown into one of the most impactful corporate–nonprofit collaborations in our region—touching thousands of lives and powering long-term change in housing, education, and economic mobility.  A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values  East West Bank and United Way share a belief that every person deserves an opportunity to thrive and a path to financial stability. Since first joining our Board of Directors in 1996,  East West Bank Chairman, President & CEO Dominic Ng  has played a pivotal role in shaping United Way’s community impact. His leadership helped guide efforts to address systemic inequities and uplifting communities historically excluded from opportunity.  From the early 2000s through today, East West Bank’s leadership and employees have redefined what corporate community engagement can achieve. Under Dominic Ng’s leadership, East West Bank has championed record fundraising efforts that helped launch the groundbreaking report   A Tale of Two Cities,  the first quantitative analysis comparing Los Angeles’ social and economic landscape from 1999 to 2009. The report informed United Way’s 10-year Action Plan to expand access to basic needs, financial tools, and pathways to stability. The Bank’s support has remained steadfast through natural disasters, economic downturns, and moments of crisis—including a $125,000 gift to the Pandemic Relief Fund. Time and again, East West Bank and its employees have stepped up for the region.  East West Bank & WalkUnitedLA  One of the most visible and enduring symbols of this partnership is East West Bank’s consistent support of  WalkUnitedLA  (formerly HomeWalk). Since the event’s inception in 2007, East West Bank has been a leading sponsor—mobilizing thousands of employees and building fundraising teams to advance solutions to end homelessness, strengthen economic mobility, and, in 2025, support wildfire recovery. Year after year, East West Bank’s WalkUnited teams have ranked among the top fundraisers.  WalkUnitedLA has always been more than a walk—it is a movement powered by community, compassion, and the belief that everyone deserves a better future. East West Bank has helped sustain and grow that movement every year.  Building the Future Together  Through financial literacy workshops, small business support, education programs, and emergency relief efforts, this partnership has expanded opportunities for thousands of individuals and families. Together, we have:  Equipped families with financial education and budgeting tools  Supported small businesses through economic uncertainty  Helped students access academic resources and pathways to higher education  Provided essential resources to families facing housing insecurity  Mobilized volunteers to support tax preparation, community beatification, and crisis response  Volunteerism has long been at the heart of the 30‑year partnership, turning time and talent into lasting community impact. Most recently, EWB volunteers donated their time at Foothill Unity Center of Monrovia, rolling up their sleeves to sort food and other donations. Their hands‑on support helped sustain three weekly food distribution events serving low‑income households across the San Gabriel Valley—demonstrating how dedicated volunteers continue to power this long‑standing collaboration and ensure families have access to essential resources.  Each initiative represents a step toward a more equitable Los Angeles—one where every family has the opportunity to build a pathway to prosperity.  As we celebrate  30 years of partnership , we honor East West Bank’s extraordinary legacy and look ahead with renewed energy. Together, we remain committed to creating stability, opportunity, and hope.  “Financial stability is the foundation of opportunity, and for 30 years, East West Bank has helped United Way ensure families across Los Angeles have the tools and resources to build economic resiliency. They have helped families move from crisis to stability—strengthening household finances and expanding long‑term economic opportunity across our region.” said   Elise Buik, President & CEO, United Way of Greater Los Angeles.   “ Thank you, East West Bank, for your unwavering commitment, leadership, and belief in a stronger, more equitable future for every Angeleno.”  Stay Involved First Name Last Name Email Subscribe so you can stay in the loop on our work, upcoming community events, and more. And here is why:    When we unite, we become stronger. We become a force capable of lifting each other up and transforming hardship into hope. When our human rights and liberties are threatened, when the most vulnerable among us are being abandoned by the system, when our communities of color live in fear, we will stand up with them in solidarity, not as witnesses but as a united force for good. In times of adversity, United Way joins forces with our local leaders and institutions to defend our collective values so that all people in Los Angeles can live with dignity and safety in their own communities. We champion systems that enable our vision for individuals and families to have equal access to housing, financial stability, education, and opportunities to find pathways to prosperity. For more than 100 years, United Way of Greater Los Angeles has stood strong through wars, natural disasters, pandemics, economic recessions, and other major challenges. Our “superpower” has always been bringing people and resources together to provide a roadmap for recovery while standing by those most vulnerable and showing them they are not alone. This year, we faced together the devastating wildfires in Palisades and Altadena, the immigration raids in predominantly Latino communities across Los Angeles, and the drastic cuts in federal funding to public programs like Medicaid and CalFresh that are leaving millions food insecure and without access to healthcare. Federal funding cuts at our public colleges and universities are further hurting our low-income students.    Whether it is children, the elderly, the displaced, the unhoused, or those facing economic hardship, our collective responsibility is to ensure no one is left behind in times of crisis. Our shared vision for a stronger, more resilient Los Angeles amid the adversity and political divide should be our north star for unity.  When we come together—across backgrounds, beliefs, and political views—we become a beacon of hope for others, showing that we have the power to choose empathy over indifference, and solidarity over division. When we come together in support of those who need it most, we strengthen the entire fabric of our communities. Their resilience becomes our shared triumph. Even in the darkest moments, light can be found in collective action. Every challenge carries within it the seed of opportunity. A crisis can reveal our flaws as a society and systems that need to be fixed, but it can also spark compassion and solidarity. When we face difficulties together, we learn to listen more deeply, to embrace our differences, and recognize that diversity is a strength through collaboration in building solutions that are equitable and sustainable. We have an opportunity in front of us. Let’s not wait to act. Let us be the ones who reach out, who speak up, who build bridges. Let us be the ones who remind the world that unity is not just a concept—it’s a choice we make every day.  Together, we can turn troubled times into transformative ones. Together, we can support the vulnerable, overcome division, and prevail—not just as individuals, but as a united force for good in Los Angeles.  I hope you join our organization and thousands of Angelenos to show the world that United is the Way!  In unity,   Elise Buik, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles  Stay Involved First Name Last Name Email Subscribe so you can stay in the loop on our work, upcoming community events, and more. Applicant Resources Request for Proposal: Workforce Restructuring & Retention Application Questions Budget Template Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Apply Request for Information (RFI) Intergenerational Housing Prototypes About 25% of LA County’s homeless are 55 or older, many of whom are facing homelessness for the first time. Limited housing supply, building challenges, and changing demographics require reevaluating the housing landscape. Intergenerational housing can reduce social isolation, improve stability, and prevent homelessness. While promising models exist nationwide, LA needs more evaluation of locally tailored models that combine innovative design, sustainability, and policy reform into a comprehensive strategy for addressing its affordable housing crisis. United Way of Greater Los Angeles (UWGLA) seeks responses from qualified housing consultants or interdisciplinary teams to design feasible, replicable intergenerational housing prototypes tailored to Los Angeles. The goal is to create fundable, real-world design concepts that advance affordability, stability, and community connection for older adults and other populations. Through this Request for Information (RFI), UWGLA will commission a design and feasibility package to develop innovative intergenerational housing models for potential piloting in Los Angeles. Some nights, I slept on a bench outside the building where I went to class, unsure of what tomorrow would bring,”  Allen said . “Many students like me across LA are working multiple jobs, caring for family, facing housing insecurity, rebuilding after loss, fighting health challenges, all while riding across the city just trying to make it to class.”  In California, 60 percent of community college students face  housing insecurity . Nearly one in four experience homelessness and half are struggling with food insecurity.  Allen noted the support he has received through the partnership between PCC and United Way helps students like him know that “we are not alone, that our story matters and that when we invest in people in need, we invest in the future of Los Angeles.”  From left, Los Angeles Quarterback Matthew Stafford, United Way of Greater Los Angeles President & CEO, Elise Buik, LA Rams announcer Sam Lagana, and LA Rams mascot Rampage. Matthew Stafford  returned for the second consecutive year as WalkUnitedLA 2026’s Honorary Chair, championing this year’s theme: Housing, Education, and Opportunity for All. “Everybody deserves opportunities,” said  Stafford . “I’m so happy that with the support from the Rams and United Way, students in the LA area are going to have access to funding, mentorship, skills, and career pathways that are not only going to change their lives, but hopefully the lives of their families as well.”  In Los Angeles County, an estimated 1.17 million households (41%) struggle to make ends meet, including paying for housing, food, childcare, health care, transportation, and taxes. More than 1 million households pay 30% or more on housing.  “Housing, education and opportunity for all that’s what we believe in, and that’s why we’re here for today,” said  Elise Buik, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles . “We know that our future lies in our young people, in their talent, in their resilience and in their potential to rise when given the chance.”  “We are proud that this year’s walk has a special focus on education as a critical pathway to economic mobility,” said Los Angeles Rams President Kevin Demoff . “The Rams believe in the power of education, and we live out that belief in our S.T.E.A.M. literacy, mentorship, and scholarship programs, just to name a few.”   The stage program also featured a jazz performance by the  HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles) Eisner Intergenerational Orchestra , along with remarks from  Pasadena City College President José A. Gómez  on the critical role community colleges play in advancing equity and opportunity.   Participants also enjoyed fun activations such as photo opportunities with the 2026 Rams rookies, Rams Cheerleaders, mascot Rampage, Rams Kids Zone, food trucks, picnic area, outdoor games, and more.  WalkUnitedLA 2026: Housing, Education, and Opportunity for All was made possible through the generous support of  presenting sponsors the Los Angeles Rams and East West Bank,  and thanks to major sponsors including Edward Jones, The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, Banc of California, BMO, City National Bank, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Kaiser Permanente, KPMG, L.A. Care, U.S. Bank, and media sponsor ABC-7/KABC-TV Los Angeles.   The proceeds from the walk benefit United Way’s life-changing programs focused on creating pathways out of poverty. People are encouraged to donate at  WalkUnitedLA.org  until May 31 to help United Way’s transformative initiatives aimed at providing high school and community college students with equitable access to essential resources that help them stay enrolled, graduate, and build successful futures.  ### About United Way of Greater Los Angeles   United Way of Greater Los Angeles is one of LA’s most trusted nonprofits, bringing together people, partners, and resources to address the region’s most pressing challenges through innovative solutions and community-driven investments.
