"It is a pleasure for me and my staff to be here, and to join hands with this community that truly lives out the values of its faith -- a faith that is practiced by serving others in their communities."
Nithya Raman
City Council Member at Dawoodi Bohra Los Angeles Event
I was grateful for the opportunity to join the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit to clean up Farmington Hills and protect the natural resources we are blessed to steward. I’m proud of the work Governor Whitmer and I have done to protect Michigan’s environment, and I encourage every Michigander to take time to step up and make a difference.
Garlin Gilchrist
Lt. Governor
The month of Ramadan embodies the spirit all of us at City Hall should be bringing to our work to make Los Angeles a place we’re proud to call home. It is a month that provides us opportunities for heightened charity, for good deeds, for community, for rededicating ourselves to spiritual undertaking, and for renewed vigor in all that we do. It is a pleasure for me and my staff to be here, and to join hands with this community that truly lives out the values of its faith: a faith that is practised by serving others in their communities.
Nithya Raman
Council Member
“This community stands for things that we can all learn from. For kindness, generosity, and selflessness. I constantly refer to them when I talk to my officers: this is how you should treat somebody, this is how you should expect to be treated. If you're ever near the mosque and in need, I guarantee someone will help you. I truly respect everything the Dawoodi Bohra community represents, what it brings, and what they contribute to our community. They were the first ones to stand up food drives during COVID and in fact they lasted longer than others, beyond what was the norm back then, and that's just one of the things they do… It's just incredible the things this community contributes, and thanklessly. That's what we should all aspire to be"
Montgomery County Police Chief Yamada
“These are the things that make the people, who are kind of down on their luck, feel like they are part of our community and that we care. And I know that's what the Dawoodi Bohras want us to feel. And I have always felt that love coming from this building and these people.”
Kim Sanchez Tampa
“The Dawoodi Bohras of Tampa continue to give so much to this great city. While small in number, their presence is felt far and wide, both in their professional contributions and in their extensive charitable work to support local vulnerable people and protect our natural environment. I thank them for their tremendous service.”
Mayor of Tampa
“One of our incredible sponsors is the Dawoodi Bohra community. I want to thank them for embodying the spirit of California Volunteers and living the values every day that we can take care of our environment and we can take care of our community at the same time”.
Josh Fryday
Chief Service Officer, California
“The level of dedication and involvement demonstrated by the Dawoodi Bohras in their local community is exemplary. Their commitment to serving others and contributing to the betterment of the community is truly inspiring.”
Haley Stevens
Representative
“The Dawoodi Bohra community’s values of fighting food insecurity, caring for people in need, and limiting waste are aligned with purpose…. I find this commitment inspirational…”
Reverend Mary "Mimi" Biedron
CROP Hunger Walk
“Thank you for the work you’re doing to promote harmony and peace in our world. I’ll always be supportive of your efforts to help the local community.”
Leroy Comrie
Senator of New York
“From my early days on patrol to rising through the ranks to elected sheriff, I have always appreciated how much this community respects us and welcomes us.”
Sheriff James
Mendrick of DuPage PD
“Your Holiness, under your guidance, the Dawoodi Bohra community has made and continues to make incredible contributions to the global community.”
John Kerry
Former United States Secretary of State

Since the 1950s, we’ve called this city home. With over 2,000 members to count, our members embody Houston’s spirit of perseverance and opportunity, contributing to the city’s industries, culture, and community life. From the peaceful suburbs of Katy to the bustling energy of downtown, we’re proud Houstonians. We’ve grown and are growing alongside this city, taking part in its story and its future. Where We Are The heart of our community is the Mohammedi Masjid Complex in Katy. Inaugurated in 2014, this masjid is the largest Dawoodi Bohra place of worship in North America. It’s where we gather for prayers, celebrations, and initiatives that serve the broader Houston community. Though, you’ll also find us far beyond Katy. We’re visiting Hermann Park, catching a game at Minute Maid Park, or volunteering to make our city better. Houston culture is woven into our lives, from its iconic rodeos to its world-class museums and universities. Where We Are Our Story The Dawoodi Bohra story in Houston began in the 1950s when a few families settled here, drawn by the city’s opportunities and welcoming spirit. By 2001, our growing numbers led to the construction of a masjid in Katy. In 2014, the inauguration of the Mohammedi Masjid Complex marked a new chapter for our community, reflecting our growth and deep roots in Houston. Our Story Resilience is in Houston’s DNA, and our community lives by this value. After Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of the city in 2017, our masjid’s industrial kitchen prepared 20,000 meals for those sheltering at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner recognized our efforts, calling them a reflection of the generosity and spirit that define this city, “I applaud the leadership and responsiveness of this community. Your generosity truly reflects the spirit of Houston as does your candid spirit reflect the spirit of Texas.” Today, we’re a vibrant group of professionals, students, and entrepreneurs, committed to making Houston a city of opportunity for everyone. Our Community From young to old, the Dawoodi Bohra community in Houston is a vibrant force committed to making a positive impact across the city and beyond. Our dedicated doctors and nurses serve underserved neighborhoods, ensuring healthcare is accessible for all, while our lawyers provide pro-bono services to non-profits and those in need. Our enthusiastic youth, high school and college students alike, are actively engaged in civic life, supporting their favorite candidates during elections, demonstrating our commitment to community involvement. With professionals making strides in energy, aerospace, and software, we contribute to Houston’s innovative spirit. The entrepreneurial drive is strong here; we support startups and small businesses through access to seasoned mentors and interest-free loans, which also help prospective homeowners invest in our neighborhoods. Our Community Community Center Community Center Masjid Name: Al Masjid Al Mohammedi, Houston Address: 17730 Coventry Park Dr, Houston, TX 77084 The Mohammedi Masjid Complex, largest of the Dawoodi Bohra community in North America, is more than a place of worship; it’s a gathering space for our community. Here, we hold prayers, community events, and educational programs that reflect our values and commitment to service. Serving the Wider Community Serving the wider community is an integral part of our faith. We actively engage in outreach initiatives, providing healthcare services and resources to underserved neighborhoods, ensuring that everyone has access to essential support. Our community members volunteer with local non-profits and participate in interfaith dialogues, fostering understanding and collaboration among diverse groups. Serving the Wider Community We also take pride in our commitment to environmental sustainability, participating in clean-up campaigns and tree-planting initiatives to help preserve Houston’s natural beauty. During times of crisis, such as Hurricane Harvey, our masjid mobilized to provide meals and assistance to those affected, reflecting our core values of compassion and generosity. By collaborating with local organizations and supporting community events, the Dawoodi Bohra community strives to make Houston a better place for all, embodying the spirit of resilience and togetherness. Over nine years, he has watched informal weekly games evolve into a nationwide tournament that draws players from across North America. This year’s ninth annual MFL Flag Football Tournament took place at Sprague High School Football Stadium in Dallas, welcoming teams from across the United States and Canada. The timing added resonance. Flag football will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, marking a major milestone for a version of American football built around speed, strategy, and accessibility. Jafferji speaks about the sport with the ease of someone who has grown alongside it. Flag football has existed for decades, but its appeal lies in how it lowers barriers to participation. Unlike tackle football, flag football removes full-contact collisions. This shift has driven its rapid rise, particularly among youth and recreational players, while preserving the core elements of the game. Strategy, athleticism, and teamwork remain central, without the long-term physical toll tied to full-contact play. “That accessibility is what makes it last,” Jafferji said. “You don’t age out of this game. You play across generations.” That philosophy shapes the league itself. Teams often include players with wide differences in age and experience, united by preparation and shared responsibility. Many train year-round. “Our athletes practice consistently. Every weekend, throughout the year,” Jafferji said. “I first played in 2018 and was immediately hooked,” said Murtaza Rawat, a community member from Austin. “The preparation keeps you active, and you build a real bond with your teammates over time, across age and skill.” “It brings people together through a shared love of the sport,” said Taher Hashim from Chicago. “Coming back each year reminds you how much that consistency matters.” For Mustafa Hamdani of New York, the tournament balances intensity with familiarity. “It’s competitive, exciting, and deeply team-oriented,” he said. “That sense of belonging keeps people returning.” Rawat sees the impact extending well beyond the field. “My son and I already talk about when he’ll be old enough to be drafted, maybe six years from now,” he said. “Whether we play together or against each other matters less than the friendships he builds and the habits he forms.” That sense of continuity, more than the Olympic announcement, defines the league’s success for Jafferji. “We started this just to play,” he said. “Now it’s something people grow up with.” Share Reading Time 4 mins Last Updated February 9, 2026 More Like This Women’s Leadership Summit: Pursuing Excellence in Every Role of Life What 100 AI Prompts and People Taught Me Bohra Student Arwa Jafferji Begins Term As University Of Texas At Arlington’s Speaker Of The Senate Together We Rise Most Popular Latest Posts Dawoodi Bohras Partner with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County As Corporate Impact Partner Across cities and courts, Dawoodi Bohras connect through racquet sports Houston Dawoodi Bohras Mark Seven Years of Rising Against Hunger As Flag Football Heads to the Olympics, a Dallas Community League Reflects on Nine Years of Growth How One Overnight Tournament Turned Into 50+ And a Lifetime of Community News and Articles Discover the latest updates, stories, and community highlights from Dawoodi Bohra communities across the USA. While most Dawoodi Bohras reside in India, many live in Pakistan, the Middle East, Yemen, and East Africa, with growing populations in Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, and here, in the United States. The first Dawoodi Bohra arrived in the United States in the 1920s. Since then, our presence has steadily grown over the past century as we build better lives for ourselves and brighter futures for our children. Today, nearly 20,000 Dawoodi Bohras live in 31 centers across the United States, from coast to coast. The term "Bohra" comes from the Gujarati (vohrvu) word for "trade," reflecting our focus on hard work and education. As proud Americans, we are dedicated to our communities, working as professionals and entrepreneurs engaged in trade and commerce, and we regard compassion and patriotism as core tenets of our faith. His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin at an event at the Los Angeles community centre of the Dawoodi Bohra community. “Love for one’s country is integral to faith” - The Prophet Mohammed Our Values Dawoodi Bohra Faith The Dawoodi Bohra faith is built on peace, love, and humanity. As followers of the Fatimi Ismaili Tayyibi school of thought, we believe in one God, Allah, the Holy Quran as His word, and the sacred mission of the Prophets and their successors. Dawoodi Bohra practices are founded and guided by Islamic principles and Fatimid teachings, including reciting the Quran, performing the five daily prayers, and fasting during Ramadan. Our faith's values come directly from the teachings of our spiritual leader, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the 53rd Dai al-mutlaq. He continuously guides and reminds us of our duty to be exemplary citizens wherever we live. In 2018, during a gathering in Indore attended by nearly 200,000 people, His Holiness shared his core message with the community in the presence of the Prime Minister of India, who had been invited as a special guest. Dawoodi Bohra Faith In accordance with our Prophet’s statement that “love for one’s country is integral to faith”, always love your country. Be loyal to it, abide by its laws, and contribute wholeheartedly to its growth and development. Be kind, help others, live in harmony, and avoid quarrels and arguments. Faith Education Women’s empowerment Social contributions Patriotism Here in the United States and around the world, the Dawoodi Bohra community has forged itself a unique identity. Following Islamic principles, our faith is expressed through service and kindness to others. We believe in the value of society, equal education, women’s empowerment, interfaith engagement, physical health and wellbeing, and a responsibility to care for the environment. Our Traditions The Dawoodi Bohra community has a blend of ethnic cultures from Egypt, Yemen, and India. Along with speaking local languages, we also use our distinctive tongue, Lisan al-Dawat, which is derived from Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Gujarati. Dawoodi Bohras uphold a distinct style of community attire. Men of the faith traditionally wear a white three-piece outfit along with a white cap decorated with golden designs, known as a topi. Women of the faith wear a two-piece dress called the rida, which stands out from other forms of hijab due to its bright colors, decorative patterns, and lace. Dawoodi Bohras take pride in their culinary tradition and practice a unique system of communal eating around a large metal plate called the thaal. Family and friends gather around the thal at home, while members sit in groups of eight at community events. We often welcome local friends and neighbors to our community center to share a traditional Dawoodi Bohra meal. These gatherings foster cultural exchange, encouraging understanding, mutual respect, and lasting friendships. Education Education is at the center of Dawoodi Bohra tradition, for its capability to transform and uplift individuals and communities. Islamic teachings declare the pursuit of knowledge as a divine declaration, illustrated in the Quran, and a responsibility. The Prophet Mohammed words emphasise this sentiment, underpinning the importance of acquiring education for every Muslim man and woman. “The pursuit of knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim man and woman.” - The Prophet Mohammed A cornerstone of Dawoodi Bohra values, education is considered a lifelong journey in the community, and efforts have been made towards accessibility. Under the guidance of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin and his predecessors, the community has established 70 schools, several colleges, and four campuses of its premier institute, Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah. This commitment has led to significant achievements, including a near 100% literacy rate worldwide. Women in the community excel in education and thrive in diverse careers, such as healthcare, academia, and business. In the United States, nearly all second-generation Dawoodi Bohras have graduated from college, far surpassing national averages and reflecting the transformative power of education. For the Dawoodi Bohra community, knowledge holds true value only when paired with action. It is not sought for worldly recognition but as a means to cultivate good character and humanity. Community members, whose educational achievements span a wide range of fields, are encouraged to give back and make meaningful contributions to society. Bohras in Society Despite our relatively small numbers, Bohras in the United States play productive roles, enriching the fabric of this nation wherever they live. Many Dawoodi Bohras run successful businesses creating jobs, generating wealth, and contributing to the growth and development of the nation. We also count among our community many doctors, IT professionals, teachers, artists, and academics. Learn more about how Dawoodi Bohras are working to make a difference in their communities. I’m proud of the work Governor Whitmer and I have done to protect Michigan’s environment, and I encourage every Michigander to take time to step up and make a difference. Garlin Gilchrist Lt. Governor The month of Ramadan embodies the spirit all of us at City Hall should be bringing to our work to make Los Angeles a place we’re proud to call home. Nithya Raman Council Member “This community stands for things that we can all learn from. That's what we should all aspire to be" Montgomery County Police Chief Yamada “These are the things that make the people, who are kind of down on their luck, feel like they are part of our community and that we care. And I know that's what the Dawoodi Bohras want us to feel. And I have always felt that love coming from this building and these people.” Kim Sanchez Tampa “The Dawoodi Bohras of Tampa continue to give so much to this great city. While small in number, their presence is felt far and wide, both in their professional contributions and in their extensive charitable work to support local vulnerable people and protect our natural environment. I thank them for their tremendous service.” Mayor of Tampa “One of our incredible sponsors is the Dawoodi Bohra community. I want to thank them for embodying the spirit of California Volunteers and living the values every day that we can take care of our environment and we can take care of our community at the same time”. Josh Fryday Chief Service Officer, California “The level of dedication and involvement demonstrated by the Dawoodi Bohras in their local community is exemplary. Their commitment to serving others and contributing to the betterment of the community is truly inspiring.” Haley Stevens Representative “The Dawoodi Bohra community’s values of fighting food insecurity, caring for people in need, and limiting waste are aligned with purpose…. I find this commitment inspirational…” Reverend Mary "Mimi" Biedron CROP Hunger Walk “Thank you for the work you’re doing to promote harmony and peace in our world. I’ll always be supportive of your efforts to help the local community.” Leroy Comrie Senator of New York “From my early days on patrol to rising through the ranks to elected sheriff, I have always appreciated how much this community respects us and welcomes us.” Sheriff James Mendrick of DuPage PD “Your Holiness, under your guidance, the Dawoodi Bohra community has made and continues to make incredible contributions to the global community.” John Kerry Former United States Secretary of State "It is a pleasure for me and my staff to be here, and to join hands with this community that truly lives out the values of its faith -- a faith that is practiced by serving others in their communities." Our community comprises nearly 572 members, made up of students, professionals, and families, who proudly call this beautiful Southern California region, home. Where We Are From the sunlit classrooms of Orange County to the innovative sectors of the Inland Empire, our community is proud to be part of a city celebrated for its educational institutions, cultural diversity, and opportunities for growth. We regularly gather at our masjid in Ontario for educational seminars and family-friendly workshops. Beyond our masjid walls, we participate in local initiatives that promote learning, such as public library drives, mentorship programs, and youth science fairs. Where We Are Our Story The Dawoodi Bohras of Southern California have a long legacy of valuing education. Since the 1950s, when the first families arrived here from India, Pakistan, and East Africa, the pursuit of knowledge has been central to our community’s identity. Today, our community spans three generations of learners. Whether it’s a kindergartener reciting the alphabet, a young adult acing their college exams, or a senior completing Quranic memorization, we believe that learning never stops. Our Story Our Community We are doctors and engineers, teachers and technologists, artists and entrepreneurs—but above all, we are students at heart. Our youth attend some of the best schools and universities in the state, such as UC Irvine, UCLA, and USC. Others pursue advanced religious and cultural studies at Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, our premier Arabic academy. Our masjid hosts programs for all ages, including Quranic memorization classes, STEM workshops, creative writing contests, and even robotics camps. These activities inspire our members to innovate, collaborate, and excel in their chosen fields. Our Community Community Center Community Center Masjid Name: Masjid Al Jamali Address: 1027 E Philadelphia St, Ontario, CA 91761 Our masjid isn’t just a place for prayers; it’s a space of learning and exploration. Kids creating science projects in one room, parents discussing sustainable practices in another, and elders sharing wisdom during intergenerational storytelling sessions. It’s where curiosity meets community, and a pursuit of knowledge is not just celebrated, but integrated. Serving the Wider Community The Dawoodi Bohras of Orange County and Inland Empire are deeply committed to supporting their neighbors and enhancing the well-being of the broader community. Regular food drives and partnerships with local food banks ensure that we play an active role in addressing food insecurity in our region. Environmental responsibility is at the heart of our efforts, with tree-planting initiatives, clean-up drives, and recycling programs creating a lasting positive impact on the local environment. Serving the Wider Community We also prioritize sustainable practices to preserve the natural beauty of Orange County and Inland Empire for future generations. Whether it’s reducing waste or participating in community clean-ups, we strive to leave a lasting, positive impact. With deep roots and strong foundations, the Dawoodi Bohra community of Orange County and Inland Empire are proud to grow alongside Southern California, contributing to its enduring legacy. The initiative reflects a sustained commitment to addressing global hunger through consistent, community-driven action. Over the past seven years, volunteers have packaged approximately 200,000 nutritious meals, contributing to school feeding programs in underserved regions around the world. The effort has brought together more than 1,000 volunteers across faiths and backgrounds, including local partners such as LifePath Church . What began as a singular community initiative has evolved into a meaningful platform for interfaith engagement, where shared values are expressed through collective action. “It gives me real joy that we aren’t just talking about interfaith harmony—we’re living it,” said Husain Jabalpurwala, one of the event’s lead organizers and a community engagement board member with Rise Against Hunger. “What we have is not simply dialogue, but an actionable service project where our diverse community comes together to serve. This proves that when we take action across faiths, we make a real impact.” Faith partners echoed this sentiment. Jackie Barreto, Youth Pastor at LifePath Church, highlighted the strength of the ongoing collaboration. “We are thankful for our ongoing relationship with the Dawoodi Bohra masjid in our community and the opportunity to serve together over the years,” she said. “Though we come from different faith traditions, we believe God’s love calls us to love our neighbors through action and service.” For many volunteers, the experience is both impactful and deeply personal. “Working together to stay synchronized and pack each meal correctly really highlights the power of teamwork,” said Adnan Kapadia, a participating volunteer. “Serving alongside our neighbors from LifePath Church has strengthened a sense of community and connection. The events are very well organized and truly fulfilling.” Project Rise, the Dawoodi Bohra community’s global philanthropic initiative, focuses on key areas including hunger relief, education, health, and environmental stewardship. In Houston, the Rise Against Hunger event stands as a consistent example of how sustained local action can contribute to broader global efforts. As the initiative enters its eighth year, organizers and volunteers remain focused on expanding participation and deepening partnerships—continuing to turn shared values into meaningful, measurable impact.
