We believe chronically homeless people who are isolated, sick, disabled, addicted, or mentally ill and have not been able to access existing services deserve compassion, dignity and the chance to lead a decent life. The HOT Team was launched by St. Vincent’s in 2016 to find supportive housing solutions for people who had been suffering on the streets in Marin for far too long. Our housing first HOT program is now so successful, it has dramatically improved our entire county’s “system of care” to prioritize those who are most vulnerable with complex problems and are least able to help themselves. We work collaboratively with key Marin County partners with authority to provide housing, case management, mental health, and community support services. St. Vincent’s deploys our highly skilled H ousing O utreach T eam of five case managers who are experts at triage, helping those with the most complex challenges overcome fears and mistrust. HOT case managers build trust on the street and assist people on their journey to housing and the opportunity to lead a safe and stable life. Over the last six years, HOT has reduced chronic homelessness in Marin by 28%, saving our community about $20 million annually by housing more than 600 high-risk people since 2016. We initiated the HOT program in Marin based on a successful HOT program in San Mateo that experienced similar challenges. We can’t stop now. We plan to use this momentum and the commitment of our partners and individual donations to reduce chronic homelessness by 50% in Marin by May 2024 – one person at a time. Candidates for the HOT program are identified through collaboration with partner agencies using several factors to determine their level of need. VINCENT DE PAUL FREE DINING ROOM: Through pandemics and power outages, our dining room has been providing free meals since 1981! Open Dining Room Volunteer Opportunities: Dining Room Volunteers needed Monday – Friday to take dishes back to get washed and greet diners at the door. Kitchen Volunteer needed Monday and Wednesday to prepare food. Hundreds of bag lunches are distributed each day at our 820 B Street location in San Rafael. Individuals and groups needed to make a minimum of 50 bag lunches. Email [email protected] to coordinate and meet this need. HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION TEAM VOLUNTEERS (must be an adult): Prevention Desk volunteers are a critical piece of St. Vincent’s ability to respond to folks in crisis. They are the first line of people who retrieve requests for assistance from precariously housed Marin residents from our voicemail and forward the information to our conference volunteers. Sometimes, if people leave incomplete information, they need to be called back. A volunteer shift is equal to a day and most volunteers check the voicemail more than once during the shift. At the end of each shift the volunteer sends an email listing the calls that came in and what action was taken. This is a remote volunteer job. A Prevention Desk volunteer must be able to: Retrieve voicemails remotely Read a map and understand geographical boundaries Email or phone in the caller information to the appropriate conference Represent St. Vincent de Paul appropriately and treat all callers with dignity and respect SVDP CONFERENCE VOLUNTEER (must be an adult): Our conferences are comprised of volunteers who field calls from people in their neighborhood who need some sort of assistance. Our conference volunteers might offer food, some help with bills or rent, referrals to other resources or just an ear and a shoulder to lean on. This is open to adults only and involves an ongoing commitment (as opposed to a one-off event), but the length of time is negotiable. You will also need to pass a background check. If you are interested, contact the person below and you will be connected with the conference volunteers in your neighborhood. Our orientation provides more information about our services as well as the various volunteer positions and you’ll learn how you can schedule your time online. What hours are available for volunteering? Volunteers are welcome in our Free Dining Room from 6:30am-1:30pm , seven days per week; and in our administrative offices upstairs from 9am-3 pm from M-F. What are the best parking options? The best public parking garage is located on the corner of 3rd and B Streets. We strongly suggest that you park in this garage, because it is easy to forget about a parking meter while volunteering and can result in a costly parking ticket. Metered parking is available, but is limited to 2-hours. Free 4-hour on-street parking is located nearby, if you drive past Safeway on B Street to the Albert Park area. What rules apply to volunteers? 1. All volunteers must sign in and out each day to comply with our record keeping requirements. 2. Volunteers are subject to the same rules of conduct and confidentiality which apply to paid staff, including those that apply to non-discrimination, sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. We require all volunteers to act in a responsible and professional manner when providing services to our clients. 3. While we encourage you to be a compassionate listener, agency rules do not allow staff members or volunteers to give cash or other material aid to our clients. Staff members and volunteers are also prohibited from giving clients a place to stay, even for one night. Instead, staff members and volunteers are trained to help guide guests to the appropriate resources available to them that will ensure they receive the best long-term solution that is possible. Often the sudden loss of a job, a divorce, major rent increase, expensive car repair or serious illness can put an isolated individual, parent, child, veteran, senior or family at imminent risk for eviction. At SVdP, our goal is to keep people from becoming homeless . First, our volunteers visit those in crisis in their own home, at their convenience, to assess the situation. Next, we provide assistance like temporary rent, or groceries, to stop the crisis. Finally, we offer trainings in budgeting and money-saving life skills, and explore additional support resources to build each family’s ability to remain self-sufficient. In partnership with Marin Superior Court and Legal Aid of Marin we host a monthly Community Court in our dining facility after hours. Last year, we assisted 370 individuals to successfully resolve their cases. How can we help you? Marin Community Court makes court proceedings accessible to you in a friendly atmosphere to help resolve minor offenses and outstanding fines that are damaging your credit, impacting your driver’s license, or otherwise holding you back. Community Court personnel work with you to secure community service hours, connect you with social services, medical treatment, rehabilitation programs, and job seeking assistance. How do I apply to attend Community Court? You must apply in advance to participate in Community Court. You can apply by call or text through Legal Aid of Marin at 415-622-6108 . Understanding Poverty in Marin In Marin County, there are approximately 23,000 (9%) individuals living below the federal poverty level, or 57,000 (22%) people living below the economic “self-sufficiency” standard described by the County of Marin, which factors in the high cost of living here. Many of these individuals and families are extremely vulnerable to experiencing a financial crisis and becoming homeless as a result of: Rent increases Serious health problems, injuries Mental illness, addiction Domestic violence Loss of job or family The County reports that on any one day there are typically more than 5,000 people who are at-risk of becoming homeless or are already homeless in Marin. We Serve People in Crisis Our hot meals and crisis assistance services are open to all who come to us for help, including seniors, single-parent families, as well as veterans, working-poor, unemployed and homeless people. Most of our clients work in low-wage jobs in Marin. Many have run out of resources and are close to giving up hope, and succumbing to a life on the streets. Together, with our supporters and community partners, we always find a way to extend a helping hand. Failure is not an option – we never give up on helping people in need. HELP DESK St. Vincent’s Housing Help Desk provides a variety of services to help individuals or families experiencing homelessness. No appointment is needed at our drop-in Help Desk for in-person requests every Wednesday from 1:30-3:30 pm, at 747 B Street in San Rafael, or we are available by phone (415-454-3303 ext. 25) Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Help Desk Eligibility To be eligible for services through our Help Desk , an individual must be currently experiencing homelessness in Marin County and is required to complete a Help Desk intake appointment with one of our staff members. Help Desk staff will assist individuals and families to receive support through several SVdP programs, including: Rapid Rehousing programs, CalWORKs, and Coordinated Entry. The following describes specific services and related documents needed to expedite your service delivery: Transportation Services DMV ID Voucher License fee payment Bus Tickets Vehicle Registration, documentation needed (valid driver’s license and insurance) Housing Services Conduct an assessment for single adults and families in need to determine the programs and housing options available to them. Housing help is provided once the client is assigned to a SVdP case manager. Assistance to return to previous residence or relocate outside of the area, documentation needed (ID for transportation purposes, verbal and written agreement from the family member, friend, or loved one with whom client will be residing) Clothing Services Goodwill Vouchers Referral to Bloom Purchase of uniform, specialized shoes, or required clothing items for clients who are newly employed Quick links to other low-income and homeless related services: Ritter Center Healthcare, day services and support for homeless people Homeward Bound of Marin Individual and family resources for emergency, temporary, and transitional housing and support in Marin Buckelew Programs Services and housing to increase the self-sufficiency and enhancing the quality of life for adults with mental illness in Marin, Napa and Sonoma County of Marin Housing Authority Assistance to secure and maintain high quality, affordable housing for low and moderate-income residents of Marin Gilead House Located in Novato, California, Gilead House is a residential home that houses up to six families. Each family receives a private bedroom, bathroom, and closet. Canal Alliance Services, education and legal resources for low-income Spanish speaking immigrants in Marin. Need Help Paying Bills Free online resource that locates local agencies near you capable of helping with financial assistance, obtaining free items, housing, food, and emergency or long term help. If you are sleeping outside, in a car or on someone’s couch in Marin, we encourage you to visit our Housing Help Desk. We understand that this is a very high-risk situation than can quickly get worse without help. How can we help you? Right Now We can provide you with some basic items (blanket, clean socks, toiletries) and may provide limited financial aid for critical needs. We can try to place you in temporary shelter programs, or come up with other temporary solutions. Into the Future We can assess your barriers to housing and create a personal housing plan that will allow us to work with you to remove those barriers and find a place to live. Once suitable housing is located, we may be able to help with some of the initial expenses and support you through the transition back into housing. What should I do to get help? We welcome you to visit our Housing Help Desk Monday – Friday to see how we can help you. Spanish-speaking volunteers are available. The Housing Help Desk is located above our Free Dining Room at 822 B Street in San Rafael. Sign-ups begin at 10:45 am each day. Please sign-in at the counter when you arrive. Our experienced volunteers in our St. Vincent de Paul conferences are available to meet with you to help assess your situation. You may receive immediate assistance like groceries, financial support to temporarily help pay your rent or other bills, and information about other resources. The only requirement is that you must be a resident of Marin County. Into the Future Our volunteers are also ready to meet with you over time to help you create a plan and assist you to make sure you can get back on track to maintain your housing. We want to help you develop a network of support for you and your family, so you can enjoy greater stability into the future. What should I do to get help? The first step is to call our Prevention Desk at 415-454-0366 and provide us with your name, phone number, and complete address, and a brief description of your need. What will happen next? You can expect one of our experienced volunteers to contact you to set up an appointment. The evening was spent at the highest point in San Francisco with spectacular views, shared stories, hors d’oeuvres, and fine wine. For eighty years, SVdP has stood with Marin, committed to ending hunger and homelessness, and offering hope where it is needed most. Federal Tax I.D. # 94-1207701 Did you know retirees age 70½ or older are able to donate up to $50,000 from their IRAs to fund gift annuities and get back monthly retirement paychecks at fixed rates of up to 9.7% depending on your age? The gifts count toward required minimum distributions, the annual withdrawals older Americans must make from retirement accounts. Normally these withdrawals are taxed as income, but when directed to charity they are tax-free. In exchange for your kind gift, SVdP agrees to make fixed annual payments to the giver. Any money left over at the end of your life will be donated to SVdP. What are the tax benefits of an IRA-funded charitable gift annuity? The IRA withdrawal doesn’t count as income, and it can count toward any required minimum distribution amount for the year. The IRA owner gets a minimum payout of 5% annually, taxed as ordinary income. Are there restrictions on the donations? IRA-funded gift annuities come with special rules. A donor can make the gift in one tax year only. That could be one $50,000 gift, or several smaller gifts up to the $50,000 limit. The $50,000 amount counts toward a separate $100,000 limit per taxpayer for outright gifts to charity made with IRA dollars. The annuity can make payments to the donor or to the donor and spouse only. Payments have to start within a year of funding it. How safe is a gift annuity? We are also affiliated with one of the oldest and most effective charitable organizations in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul , a Catholic lay organization of nearly 700,000 people headquartered in Paris, France that helps people living in poverty in 142 countries on five continents. In the US, membership totals 172,000 in 4,600 local communities. We believe that everyone needs food, housing, dignity and a chance for a better life – no one can do it alone. Our goal is to provide compassionate care and critical services to residents of Marin County who are struggling to make ends meet, but are not receiving the help they need. St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County is an independent, nonprofit organization that is governed by its own Board of Directors and is solely responsible for its own fundraising and program operations. All of the donations we receive serve the people of Marin. We are also affiliated with one of the oldest and most effective charitable organizations in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul , a Catholic lay organization of nearly 700,000 people headquartered in Paris, France that helps people living in poverty in 142 countries on five continents. In the US, membership totals 172,000 in 4,600 local communities. Here in Marin, since 1946, our key crisis assistance programs support over 8,000 people annually and have grown to include: Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) collaborative program to help chronically homeless individuals with multiple health problems. Free Dining Room serving nearly 180,000 meals, open every day. Rapid Rehousing Assistance for people experiencing homelessness. Crisis Assistance to prevent people from evictions.
