A Video from Saul Many people come to me to communicate more effectively and to feel better while they’re doing it. So I made a video about a potentially surprising aspect of feeling better. You’ll get a deeper sense of the perspective I bring to my work in the My Approach section of this website and in my short articles about communication challenges and opportunities. Clients My clients include professionals—executives, founders, visual artists, writers, podcasters, therapists, academics, politicians, clergy, athletes, lawyers, and a wide range of others—as well as performers and people looking for personal development. They typically share a passion for transformative learning as well as a desire to realize positive change in the world. I work with clients in Los Angeles and all over the world. See Testimonials for a sample of my clients. Bio I graduated from Columbia University with an MA in Buddhist Studies. For several years I worked as a conflict resolution and organizational development consultant. During that time, I also did some acting. Because anxiety about speaking was holding me back in both areas, I took a class in Fitzmaurice Voicework®, and to my surprise I realized I was home. Its emphasis on being present, relaxed, and vibrant, and bringing that to communication, became the perfect bridge for my coaching practice which over time became more and more focused on voice, public speaking, and presence. That difference really matters. For more public speaking, voice, and presence tips, see Tips. Myths about Public Speaking If I can just get rid of my anxiety, I'll be fine. You might feel fine, but it's likely you'll also be flat. When you try to dull anxiety, this either makes it worse or it tends to dull all feelings. A presentation without feeling might as well just be a report on paper. The key is learning how to welcome and make use of the energy that you experience as anxiety. Here's an article which references good research on relating with performance anxiety. Here's a good TED Talk that addresses the significance of how we view and deal with stress. The realities of what leads to effective public speaking are more nuanced than in the study or TED Talk, but the principles are worth understanding. Here’s an article I wrote about one key aspect of intense public speaking or performance anxiety. For more myths about public speaking, see Myths. (updated May 2026) VOICE COACHING IN LOS ANGELES I’m a private voice coach for Los Angeles-based professionals, performers, and others seeking to develop or find their voice. In addition to helping people become vibrantly expressive, and helping people find their voice, I work with clients whose voices tend to get hoarse or feel weak, and with people who lose their voice, or don't feel their voice is adequately conveying their experience. I help people whose voice is habitually tight, high, or soft. I also train people to become more resonant and gain a fuller, more vibrant voice. Literally and metaphorically.  I also work with people who experience anxiety around their voice. With people who may experience stage fright when they speak. With people who freeze. With people who mumble.   In addition, I have experience working with stuttering and conditions such as muscle tension dysphonia. Some of the work with stuttering and muscle tension dysphonia is done in conjunction with voice therapists or other medical professionals. Some of my clients are receiving voice therapy when they begin working with me, or have undergone voice therapy and are looking to continue their development.  While I am a vocal coach for singers and singing teachers, I don’t teach singing. That said, I do teach singers how to find greater freedom and expressivity with less effort. I focus on linking freedom & breath management to being vocally expressive in healthy ways—as well as focusing on embodied presence, connecting to the song, connecting with the audience, and working with anxiety while singing. For more information, see My Approach to Voice. PUBLIC SPEAKING COACHING IN LOS ANGELES I offer private lessons and group workshops in Public Speaking. Private coaching in public speaking provides an opportunity to focus on what is important specifically for you. How to prepare your content and delivery, how to engage an audience (including developing presence), and how to approach your goals and challenges in ways that work specifically for you.  Many people feel some variation of anxiety, nerves, stage fright, or fear when public speaking. Finding genuinely helpful ways to address this can be challenging, but it's deeply worthwhile. Private coaching can provide a good foundation for addressing these challenges in a safe context, and group coaching can be the added springboard that helps clients face their challenges in a highly relevant environment. While some of my clients are already quite accomplished, most want to discover how they can become better speakers. This can be true for CEOs, presidents, board members… as well as for people interviewing for their first job. This can be true for artists and other professionals and for people exploring pubic speaking for personal reasons. For more information, see My Approach to Public Speaking. PRESENCE COACHING IN LOS ANGELES Presence manifests externally as a relaxed vibrancy and is supported by a foundation of groundedness. All of us have a strong presence, innately, but in many of us it’s covered up. Sometimes the covering is constant and is primarily physical—or vocal, psychological, emotional, relational, or breath-related—and sometimes the covering of presence emerges only in certain contexts. Most of the time, it’s a combination, and the exploration to uncover inner and outer presence traverses through what is most necessary and available for exploration. The work I do in this area is influenced by many different disciplines, including mind/body integration techniques, acting and performance techniques, Fitzmaurice Voicework, Somatic Experiencing and Castellino Blueprint work. For more information, see My Approach to Presence. BREATHING COACHING IN LOS ANGELES Breathing is fundamentally linked to our experience, behavior, and effectiveness, and it's often unconscious. For many of us, the physiological processes of breathing have become encumbered to such an extent that our breathing inhibits our actions and reflects limitations rather than freedom. The good news is that it’s possible to relearn how to breathe in truly helpful ways. Rather than teaching "correct" breathing, I can help you undo unhelpful breathing habits that you may have accumulated over the years. That process of undoing, supported by compassionate awareness, is itself a lesson in breathing. Then we can give attention to what your body wants to do when it feels more free. As a breathing coach, I find special satisfaction in helping people in person—I work in Los Angeles, and generally in-person breathing coaching is more helpful to discover what is possible with the breathing. The work I do in this area is rooted in Fitzmaurice Voicework and is also influenced by Somatic Experiencing and Castellino Blueprint work. For more information, see My Approach to Presence and my article about why we focus on breathing. ONLINE PUBLIC SPEAKING & VOICE COACHING Before the pandemic, I did most of my work in my Los Angeles studio and at clients’ locations, but because of COVID-19 my coaching shifted for some time to remote coaching. Now I have a hybrid practice, and we can work together in person or work remotely via Zoom or by phone. I offer online public speaking coaching for both individuals and groups. Since so many people these days attend and present at a lot of remote meetings, remote learning can be a deeply relevant and helpful format. Remote sessions also offer the opportunity to learn within the convenience and comfort of your own home or office. While I typically do remote coaching via Zoom and phone, I do also use other platforms such as Teams and Hangouts. I also offer online voice coaching for individuals. If you’re interested in remote voice coaching, my experience is that it can work really well, depending on what your specific goals are. No matter where you are in the world, if you’re looking for voice or public speaking training, we can work together. For more details about remote coaching, see Private Coaching. FITZMAURICE VOICEWORK COACHING IN LOS ANGELES Fitzmaurice Voicework includes specific adaptations of yoga, shiatsu, Reichian bodywork (from Wilhelm Reich) combined with classical theatre voice training techniques. Fitzmaurice Voicework was developed by Catherine Fitzmaurice over several decades of teaching, coaching, research, and personal exploration. Catherine adapted various disciplines—such as hatha yoga and shiatsu—to make them relevant to the voice. In many ways the specific genius of her work is the synthesis that she developed—that she then asks the Fitzmaurice Voicework voice teachers she certifies to discover anew for themselves. Catherine Fitzmaurice’s work was originally created to train theater professionals—Fitzmaurice Voicework is taught as a core class in many professional theater training programs along with acting technique, movement, etc.—but has since found wide-ranging application beyond theater. Speech pathologists, for instance, have increasingly become interested in Fitzmaurice Voicework as an aid in treating people who chronically suffer from a lost or hoarse voice, as well as those who lose their voice often, have a weak voice or quiet voice, have restricted breathing patterns which limit their expressivity, or other voice problems such as nodules or muscle tension dysphonia. For more information, see my Fitzmaurice Voicework overview page and the Fitzmaurice Voicework website. VOICE TEACHER CERTIFICATION: I was a lead trainer for the Fitzmaurice Voicework Teacher Certification Program and am Director Emeritus of the Fitzmaurice Institute. If you’re interested in in-depth, holistic voice training and specifically want to be certified as a voice teacher, this program might be for you. Here is some basic information on the Fitzmaurice Voicework voice teacher certification. For more information on voice teacher training, including application information, visit the Fitzmaurice Voicework site. PUBLIC SPEAKING WORKSHOPS IN LOS ANGELES The public speaking workshops I offer are attended by a range of professionals: CEOs, mid-level managers, other professionals, students, lawyers, artists, writers, therapists, influencers, clergy, etc. In these workshops, we explore how to develop more compelling content, as well as how to deliver that content in more compelling ways. Beyond the important technical learning, a lot of this boils down to presence. Whether you call it presence, executive presence, embodied presence, charisma—or being present—it is learnable! The public speaking training I offer in Los Angeles is a great way to develop your presence as well as a lot of specific public speaking skills. Most of my public speaking workshops are located in Los Angeles, but I also travel when needed. See Public Speaking Workshops for more information. VOICE WORKSHOPS IN LOS ANGELES The voice workshops I offer are intended primarily for performers or teachers of performers (including voice teachers); however, some voice workshops are also open to everyone who wants voice training. Once or twice a year, I offer a two-day introductory voice workshop in Los Angeles for performers and teachers of performers. From time to time, I also teach five-day workshops that explore the whole arc of Fitzmaurice Voicework. In addition, I teach workshops of varying length that cover specific subjects. The core of the voice workshops is an exploration of breathing techniques in service of developing a free as well as easily managed breathing system—in order to support your speaking in a free, embodied, and connected way. If you're an actor and you feel like your acting technique is solid but you know you can be more available (but you don't know how), the introductory workshop is an ideal place to start. If you’re not a performer, please inquire about which workshops are right for you. Most of the voice workshops are in Los Angeles, but I also teach internationally. If you’re wanting voice training in Los Angeles, or you’re looking to sponsor a workshop in your area, please inquire. See Voice Workshops for more information. VOICE CLASSES IN LOS ANGELES My voice classes are for performers and teachers of performers. They are ongoing and offered at a variety of times each week. My voice classes are used primarily by LA-based actors who employ a wide variety of acting techniques and have a wide variety of experience. For some actors, attending voice class means having a place to develop and practice effective, healthy vocal technique; for some it's related to becoming more vocally expressive or developing certain aspects of the voice; for some it's overcoming phobias and facing their fear of revealing themselves in front of others in specific contexts; for some it's opening up the body and finding a deeper connection to oneself; for some it's about repatterning a habit of getting hoarse after being very expressive; for some it's having a place to play each week. Often actors in Los Angeles don't consider voice to be a relevant part of their training. In most professional actor training programs in other parts of the world, however, voice class is considered an essential companion to acting technique. For examples of how voice training can specifically benefit actors in Los Angeles, see my article, To Breathe or Not to Breathe. My Los Angeles based voice classes are appropriate for theater actors as well as television and film actors. Any actor who is serious about voice training can apply. See Voice Classes for more information. PROCESS CONSULTING If I’ve worked with you extensively, in the spirit of helping you continue to develop your voice, I offer a service called process consulting. Its essence is to help you get from point A to point B. A = Where you are now and B = Where you want to go. The work begins with recognizing and moving toward what you really care about, what nourishes and excites you, what you find deeply meaningful. Naturally, over time, as you achieve your goals or your circumstances change, A and B will also change, and as that happens, we begin the process over again. PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS For some clients, private voice coaching is preferable to group coaching. For most people, this will either be because of a desire for the coaching to be more individualized or because of desire for a greater sense of safety or privacy. Whatever your reasons, if you’re looking for private voice lessons—and you’re not looking for traditional singing training—we may be a great fit. See Private Coaching for more information. PRIVATE LESSONS IN PUBLIC SPEAKING Private coaching in public speaking may seem like an oxymoron, but it's not. The value of private lessons for most students is really three-fold: First, having a private coach allows you to focus very specifically on your own learning objectives and to do so in a way that fits your own style of learning. The work we do will be catered specifically to you. Second, having a private teacher for public speaking allows many students the opportunity to face fears and concerns that they want some privacy about. This privacy can allow for a deeper, more constructive learning process to emerge. Third, for some people, public speaking is at first too frightening to explore in a group setting. So having the opportunity to train in the fundamentals through relatively risk-free private coaching can be a crucially valuable opportunity. If you're looking for private coaching in public speaking in Los Angeles, I welcome you to contact me. See Private Coaching for more information. TED TALK COACHING IN LOS ANGELES Doing a TED Talk? I have supported many clients with their TED Talks and TEDx Talks. If you want to help people—and have your voice heard—by doing a TED Talk, and you want help with content or delivery preparation, or with presence or nerves, I’m happy to support you. If you’re wanting in-person coaching, and want to work on your TED Talk or TEDx Talk in Los Angeles, please contact me. For more information, see Private Coaching or Public Speaking Workshops. TED TALK COACHING ONLINE If you’re wanting coaching on a TED Talk or TEDx Talk, and you don’t live near a great coach to do in-person training for your TED Talk, online coaching can be an excellent alternative. Most of the dynamics related to giving a TED Talk can be worked with on online. If you elect to do remote coaching, you may be surprised by how successful that coaching can be. For more info, see Private Coaching. ADDITIONAL INFO LOCATION My studio is in Los Angeles, and I also travel widely to teach and offer remote sessions online. I have clients from all over California, the United States, and the world. I do most of my in-person voice coaching and public speaking coaching in these and other nearby Southern California cities: Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Century City, Culver City, Westwood, Studio City, Burbank, Sherman Oaks, Venice, downtown L.A., Bel Air, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, and many other areas. REFERENCES Actor and director David Schwimmer says of his experience with me a voice teacher: “Saul’s approach is invaluable for any actor working on camera and essential for working in the theatre.” Singer and actor David Rasche says of his vocal training with me, “When I worked with Saul, things moved very quickly. I have been able to do things vocally that I would never have imagined possible.” Catherine Fitzmaurice, the founder of Fitzmaurice Voicework, says, “Saul is the lead trainer in my teacher-training program because he teaches with a rare combination of clarity and compassion.” See Testimonials for additional information about clients. TOUCH While it isn't a requirement, touch can play an important role in the work I do. Through touch, students can learn to become aware of what was previously unconscious and invite the breathing into those areas in subtle ways. Any touch is always done with consent, and sometimes consent itself is the most important aspect of touch to explore. Ask about my Info Sheet for more on this and other details related to private coaching. EMOTIONS It's never the goal of my work to make someone emotional. Instead, the easy attention and awareness that is developed in this work can lead to people gradually opening their emotional experience, or learning to integrate emotional experience, in safe ways. I use aspects of Somatic Experiencing® and Castellino Foundation Training to make the work more easily digestible. Ask about my Info Sheet for more on this and other details related to private coaching. If you have questions, please contact us directly at [email protected]   Who Attends These Workshops Participants at our public speaking workshops come from a wide range of fields and professions, have varied goals and challenges, but share one trait: a desire to make fundamental, lasting changes in their public speaking. These workshops are not the right choice for those seeking one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, these workshops are designed for people who want to develop their individual potential as public speakers, in an environment of healthy challenge and support. Benefits of a Group Setting While some people prefer private coaching, public speaking workshops offer one real advantage—the group setting. Being in a group allows you to face and learn from some of the biggest challenges and opportunities of public speaking. Public speaking classes, like those offered by community colleges or Toastmasters, offer an excellent opportunity to practice with a group. Our public speaking workshops take this a step further: the learning is accelerated and condensed, and in a single, intensive weekend, it's possible to experience real and lasting change. If you want to focus on discovering your potential as a public speaker, explore what really works for you, and address any fear or confusion you may have about speaking to a group, the workshops that I and my co-teachers offer can be a great way to learn. Public speaking workshops are taught in very different ways. We encourage you to do your research, and find an approach that really suits you.  If you’re based near Los Angeles CA or Vancouver BC, our public speaking workshops may be the perfect fit for you.    Application Form TBA, Fall 2026 **  your information will not be sold or shared  ** Feedback from participants about our Los Angeles based public speaking workshops: “I've been to various public speaking workshops so I wasn't sure how your workshop could be different. But, Wow! It transformed everything I thought I knew. I now feel so much more confident and comfortable when speaking to groups.” Celine   F. — Human Resources, formerly at Google "My experience with your workshop this weekend was phenomenal. I'm so truly grateful for the experience. I came to you terrified of public speaking, but left feeling a sense of accomplishment.  It was life changing, and by far one of the best things I've ever done to develop myself." Lilian H. — Real Estate Developer "This class really helped me, and I am so glad I did it! Thank you so much!" Catherine Fitzmaurice with Saul Kotzubei   Four Parts of Fitzmaurice Voicework: Freedom and Spontaneity This part of the work, called Destructuring, frees your voice and your breathing. Fitzmaurice exercises loosen muscular rigidity, increase natural resonance, develop a felt sense of internal flow, and encourage the breathing to become spontaneous. As your breathing becomes more free, you gain access to previously unconscious or frozen impulses. This part of the work expands your experience of your self, your sense of being present and free, and your ability to express these experiences vocally. Focus This part of the work, called Structuring, teaches you to communicate with vocal support and power that come from your core. This work helps you (re)discover the efficient process that emerges when you need to communicate something vocally. While this part of the work is technical, it is rooted in an organic process that many of us have lost access to by the time we become adults. Presence This part of the work supports greater vibrancy in practitioners, and results in a rich combination of receptivity, expressivity, and the ability just to be. Play and Application This part of the work combines freedom and focus with your imagination to address communication in contexts that are helpful for you. For performers, this work also helps you explore the full range of humanity that can be expressed through your voice.   Public Workshops & Classes — Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home About Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials Resources Contact Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home / About / Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services / Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials / Resources / Contact / Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Communicate what really matters Public Workshops & Classes These are the main influences on my public speaking coaching and voice coaching practice in Los Angeles Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home / About / Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services / Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials / Resources / Contact /   PUBLIC WORKSHOPS & CLASSES       Public Speaking Workshops Clear, compelling content is very important, but when you're speaking, it's not enough. Brief statement about why you'd like to do the workshop How you heard about this work These workshops are kept small, and they sometimes fill as much as a month in advance. What's Covered This intensive introduction helps you free your voice and find greater freedom, power, connection and ease in your work. Using Fitzmaurice Voicework, we do exercises to free the voice and explore a sense of being vibrantly relaxed. In this part of the work, called Destructuring , we pay particular attention to freeing the breathing and related muscles through bodywork adapted for that purpose. At a basic level, this part of the work focuses on allowing yourself to be and to breathe. The internal nature of this experience is then shifted to bring you into relationship with others, with the space, and with voice and text. We also briefly cover the second part of Fitzmaurice Voicework, Structuring . Structuring helps you communicate with greater vocal flexibility, ease, and power, and do so with a greater sense of presence. Goals These introductory intensives have four goals: Experience how this work addresses your specific needs. Develop a highly effective vocal warm-up that can become a part of any regular training routine you use. Uncover a deeper experience of the role of breathing in vocal production and in developing greater presence, connection, and spontaneity in your work. Prepare to join ongoing classes held in Los Angeles, if you wish to do so. Cost The cost of the workshop is on a sliding scale to accommodate people of different means. The regular cost is $600 and the minimum cost is $300. The amount you pay within that range depends on your ability to pay. It's on the honor system, and it doesn’t require explanation. Deposit and Refunds If you are accepted into the workshop, a deposit of $100 is required to reserve a space. The balance is due a week before we start. If you cancel a week or more before the workshop begins, you will not be responsible for the balance of the workshop fee, and you may apply your deposit to workshops held within the next 12 months. If you cancel less than one week before the workshop begins, you are responsible to pay the minimum workshop fee (less your deposit). An exception will be offered if you book paid professional performing work during the times of the workshop. In that case, you can use your deposit to attend another introduction anytime during the next twelve months. Some enjoy public speaking, and some are afraid of it. All of my clients have different needs and individual styles of learning, and I enjoy discovering what really helps each person. See Testimonials . Basic Approach When we work one-on-one , an open dialogue between us (rather than a fixed road map) keeps our focus on your individual needs and what really helps you. This process is sometimes unconventional, often enjoyable, and surprisingly effective. In a group workshop setting , our focus is on fundamentals like dealing well with anxiety, developing greater presence, engaging an audience, and creating compelling content. There's also individual coaching to address your specific needs. Focus Areas Depending on your needs, we can focus on these and other areas: Confidence : learn how to work with fear and other challenges until you can turn them into strengths. Delivery / Presence: engage and inspire an audience by becoming more vividly present. Preparation: learn what helps you practice effectively before presentations, speeches, lectures, pitches, trials, meetings, interviews, etc. Content / Story: clarify and simplify what you're communicating, focusing on why it matters to you and to your audience. Leadership and Communication: develop your leadership skills by developing your capacity to communicate what really matters. Become aware of what's hindering you and hone what makes you most effective. My Influences I use a variety of approaches  to address your public speaking needs. In addition to specific approaches, I bring a fundamental curiosity to my work, and a willingness to learn and be surprised by what is most helpful to each client. Types of Public Speaking Some types of public speaking my clients do: Speeches and presentations (including keynotes, TED Talks, work presentations, and lectures) Workplace communication (with individuals and groups) TV, social media, and radio (hosting, newscasting, reporting, expert guest appearances, press conferences, marketing videos) Other high-stakes interactions (pitches, interviews, panels, advocacy, and trials) Approaches to Learning The work will be conceptual, experiential and practical, and the emphasis will change as needed.  Why Conceptual? Because how you understand something affects how you do it. Why Experiential? Because it’s not enough just to understand something. In order to learn something deeply, you also need to experience it directly. Why Practical? Because it’s important that our work is useful outside of the studio.   What I offer: Private Sessions Private coaching in public speaking in my Los Angeles studio, your location, or remotely provides the opportunity to focus on your specific needs. Public Speaking Workshops Public speaking workshops in Los Angeles (or your location) offer substantial learning in a short period of time. Here are just a few. If you’ve worked with Saul, and you’d like to share your experience, we’d love to hear from you .       "Saul's approach is invaluable for any actor working on camera, and essential for working in the theatre." David Schwimmer Actor, Director (American Crime Story; Friends series regular) IMDB         "I called Saul when I had a big speech to prepare for. What Saul taught me has helped me not just in live speaking but also in the rest of my life. Our work transformed not just how I say things but literally how people respond. I feel Saul was as vested in my success as I was, and I recommend him unequivocally to anyone preparing for an important speech, or seeking connection and genuine, effective expression in their everyday encounters." Alex Wilcox Co-Founder & CEO, JSX Airlines Website         “I experienced significant improvement upon learning about the breath and breathing. The warm-up exercises/explorations focus me in such a way that I find I am very ready to work. Contrary to popular belief, you can teach an old dog new tricks.” Charlayne Woodard Actor, Singer (Tony nomination for Ain't Misbehavin') IMDB         “An amazing experience. This unique training, adapted specifically to my individual situation, has opened a world of possibilities. Speaking as a professional introvert, I found Saul's methods practical and immediately useful.” Susan Mallery #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Website         “Working with Saul was an incredible and impactful experience for me. He goes so much further than just helping with a speech. He becomes a coach, mentor and fan. And you can tell immediately that his guidance is all from his heart. With Saul by my side, I’ve made really amazing progress with my love/hate relationship with public speaking. And while the work continues, knowing he’s in my corner makes it all so much more possible, and rewarding.” Mike Farah CEO, Funny or Die; Board Member, Producers Guild of America Website         "Saul is an incredibly gifted teacher. He sees through layers of conditioning and tension and provides a pathway toward greater, more fulfilling forms of expression. Although the work can be challenging, Saul's keen wit and insights also make the learning process fun!" Shana Waterman Head of Television, One Race Films Website         "We were looking to find a coach who could help our attorneys communicate effectively with audiences from 5 to 500. Saul has the innate ability to assess each attorney’s style and immediately pinpoint how to maximize their potential. We could not be more pleased with the accolades we received as our attorneys applied their new skills in presentations and in the courtroom." Paul S. Fleck Senior Partner, AALRR Law Firm (Top 50 in size; #1 in diversity in California) Website         “Working with Saul gave me so much insight into my own physical instrument, particularly in how connected my breath and voice are to everything I do as an actor and artist. It’s helped my creativity, emotion, and impulses flow freer in both my work and life.” Chen Tang Actor (Warrior series regular; Mulan) IMDB         “I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Saul for several months to develop a personal speaking style that is both genuine and engaging. In addition to his technical expertise, Saul is also a gifted listener and a natural motivator. He was always patient and encouraging, even when I was feeling anxious or frustrated. He also created a safe and supportive environment where I felt comfortable sharing my thoughts and ideas. He assisted me in becoming a better speaker in ways that I never imagined possible.” George Moringer Founder, tapouts Website         "My work with Saul has been transformational. His individualized approach has helped me find more depth and connection. I am seeking longevity and growth in my career, and I find this work vital to achieving those goals." Alyssa Diaz Actor (The Rookie series regular; Army Wives series regular) IMDB         "I was losing my voice consistently for two years and found out I had 2 nodules on my vocal cords. I was terrified I would never speak normally again. Working with Saul changed my life. I haven't lost my voice since and the lessons he teaches go way beyond voice work. I am forever grateful." Kit Rich Pilates Instructor and Health Educator Website         “Saul is amazing. I owe an important part of my company's growth to Saul.” Andrew Zhou Co-founder, Kona Website         "I thought I was coming to Saul only to fix vocal problems  – but with him, the voice is simply the gateway to a deep, pure connection with the source of creativity. It’s about more than being a better actor - that's barely touching the surface. This work is about uncovering the mystery of being, connection with the self, and the world around you." Bojana Novakovic Actor (Instinct series regular; Rake series regular) IMDB         “When I worked with Saul, things moved very quickly. I have been able to do things vocally that I would never have imagined possible.” David Rasche Actor, Singer (Succession series regular; In the Loop, Men in Black 3) IMDB ,  IBDB        “After years of enjoying public speaking, I suddenly developed a paralyzing and inexplicable fear of talking to groups. This was particularly distressing because my job requires daily public interactions and presentations to groups.  Fortunately a fellow academic introduced me to Saul Kotzubei.  Working with Saul was truly a transformative experience and one of the best personal and professional decisions I have ever made.  He gave me my voice and my life back, but most importantly he helped me recover my soul. That’s quite a skill set and I will be forever indebted to this amazing, caring, intelligent, and talented individual.” Sharon H. University Dean         “If you're willing to go there, Saul can help you access parts of yourself buried or forgotten. Hard Work. If so, consider this: moving toward a positive goal (while also developing a friendlier attitude toward shame) is often more helpful than working hard to avoid shame. Read about shame . Public Speaking Tip Rather than talking at people, you have the opportunity to talk with them. That difference really matters. Read more about how I approach public speaking . Anxiety Tip Rather than trying to conquer your anxiety, develop a better relationship with it. It’s a part of you, and being at war with a part of yourself can make your anxiety worse by creating a kind of anxiety loop. Read about the anxiety loop . Voice Tip Water matters. Once you feel dry, and you drink a glass of water, it takes about 4 hours for the water to hydrate your vocal folds. Don't wait until you're dry. Drink water, and drink it often. See how I approach being a voice coach in Los Angeles. Presence Tip Get grounded. What does that mean? For a start, it means softening your knees, allowing yourself to breathe, and feeling the floor underneath your feet. Read about posture . Public Speaking Tip Are you seeing the whole room? Even professional speakers have an unconscious tendency to favor one side or part of a room. That leaves the rest of your audience in the cold. You may be highly accomplished, just beginning, or somewhere in between. You may be ready to hone skills, discover new capacities, work on something specific that matters to you, or simply play. You may sense something is missing and be fiercely driven to uncover it. Or you may arrive unsure, even hesitant, guided by a quiet yearning for change. When we meet, we won’t follow a fixed path. Instead, we’ll clarify your context and goals and then cultivate a shared curiosity about what truly helps you— whether you're preparing for a keynote, finding or strengthening your voice, learning to feel more grounded and effective in high-stakes moments, or wanting to address something entirely different. The process we’ll go through together is sometimes unconventional, often enjoyable, and surprisingly effective. You can check out some of my clients’ perspectives on the Testimonials page. Looking for coaching for your team or organization? See Group Coaching for Organizations . What We Can Focus On Most clients don’t fall neatly into just one of these three tracks — if helpful, we can move fluidly between them, or beyond them: Public Speaking & Other Communication Confidence : Transform fear and stress into strength and clarity. Communication: develop your ability to communicate clearly, expressively, and effectively in a variety of contexts. Content / Story : Simplify and clarify what you’re saying—and why it matters to you and your audience. Preparation : Learn effective strategies for practicing speeches, presentations, lectures, pitches, trials, meetings, interviews, etc. Leadership : Become more aware of what hinders or supports your communication as a leader. Voice Find Your Voice : Access your voice in healthy, expressive, open-hearted, and creative ways. Increase Your Vocal Power & Freedom : Speak from your core, reduce fatigue, and find greater resonance. Free Your Breathing & Increase Embodiment : Discover how breath, body, and voice can become freer and more fluidly integrated. Integrate Physical Exercise and Voice : Learn how exercise and Voicework can reinforce each other, and learn warm-ups that support your specific needs. Undo Harmful Habits : Heal or prevent issues like vocal nodules. (This can be done in conjunction with medical professionals.) Presence Charisma : Cultivate a vivid, grounded presence, and feel more at ease when expressing yourself. Nervous System Regulation : Shift out of fight/flight/freeze and into grounded responsiveness. Stress Relief : Learn practices to help you manage stress and anxiety — and use these feelings in helpful, even supportive, ways. Play & Pleasure : Reignite expressiveness through playfulness and enjoyment. Mindfulness & Self-Care : Develop sustainable practices that help you feel better and perform better. Methods & Practices We can also integrate any of these into our work together, if relevant: Fitzmaurice Voicework ® To help you rediscover a free and powerful voice. An integrated approach that incorporates the body, breathing, presence, and effective communication. My main teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework is Catherine Fitzmaurice . I attended her very first teacher certification training in 1998. Somatic Experiencing ® To work effectively (and healthily) in high stress situations. The work was primarily developed by Peter Levine . My main teacher was Steven Hoskinson , with whom I completed the three-year Somatic Experiencing® Practioner Program and received my SEP designation. Body-Mind Integration Techniques To forge the critical connections between awareness, relaxation, and effective communication. Some of teachers and practices I’ve worked with include Kathy Kain (bodywork to support stress resilience); S. N. Goenka (vipassana meditation); Sandra Wells (embodiment practices); MBSR Program (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). Parts Work and Loving Kindness Practices To explore the effectiveness of embracing challenges rather than overcoming them, and learning to work with rather than against involuntary experiences. I don’t have significant formal training in IFS (Internal Family Systems) Parts Work , but I’ve found the basic principles of that work—when combined with embodied loving kindness practices—to be particularly helpful for working with past experiences that have affected clients’ presence as well as their experience of voice and public speaking. Process Consulting (Organizational Development) To help you or your organization get from A to B. The hallmark of process consulting is the realization that moving effectively towards goals requires a fluid process that takes into account what is really happening (not only what we want to happen). Using this work, I help clients clarify what is most important to them and then help them get there. My main influence was the late, great process consultant and conflict resolution specialist, Peter Chipmann (former COO of Digital Equipment Corporation). I worked with Peter for 8 years in organizational development and conflict resolution. Role Playing and Improvisation To practice communicating in the contexts that are relevant to you — without the pressure. This can help you prepare for specific events as well as address specific aspects of communication that you need to develop in. Because the learning environment is safe and clear, what you learn becomes more digestible and applicable to the outside world. My main teacher was Richard Seyd  who developed his innovative stretch work . I worked with Richard for several years and taught his work in group classes for many years afterwards. "Bridges" to Performance To help performers find accessible connections between the work we do in the studio and the work outside the studio: auditions, shoots, rehearsals, live performance, recording, warmups, etc. One of my major influences in this area is the great acting teacher, Stuart Rogers . I studied with Stuart for several years and taught alongside him at his studio in North Hollywood, California. Games and Clown To bring enjoyment, ease, and spontaneity into the process of learning and into what you take outside of the studio. My main clown teacher was also Sacha Baron Cohen's teacher, the late Philippe Gaulier . I worked intensively 8 hours/day for a year with Philippe in London, and later co-taught a series of workshops with him in the United States. Physical Activity/Movement/Exercise To integrate our work into the activities you engage in regularly — everything from working out to writing at a desk. This leads to a much deeper and useful integration of the material we work on. In the early 90's, I began working in the field of conflict resolution. In that work, in group situations in general, and as an actor, I struggled to be present and communicate effectively. To address my challenges, I began a long and wide-ranging process. I found people in diverse fields who could help me. I paid attention to what was really happening in the moment. And slowly I began to realize what I needed to focus on to improve my experience and effectiveness in communicating. As I began to teach, these experiences deeply informed my approach. I learned, amongst other things, that to realize fundamental, lasting change, cookie-cutter approaches don't get at what is needed. In that spirit, I offer a genuine, practical inquiry into what really helps each client, and a supportive environment in which clients can challenge themselves to do their best work. I now teach voice, public speaking, and presence in Los Angeles and internationally. I am a lead trainer for the two-year Fitzmaurice Voicework Teacher Certification Program and Director Emeritus of The Fitzmaurice Institute (which trains voice teachers worldwide). This approach to working with voice and presence was founded by my mother, Catherine Fitzmaurice, and is now taught at Yale, Harvard, NYU, and hundreds of other institutions worldwide. I have a Masters degree in Buddhist Studies from Columbia University. I received my SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) designation after completing the three-year Somatic Experiencing Professional Training program to help clients address the stresses associated with public speaking, performance, and daily life. I also completed the three-year Castellino Foundation Training program to help people integrate early life experiences in helpful ways. I can also draw on years of experience in acting, improv, and clown to support clients’ enjoyment and freedom in the act of speaking. I have taught at NYU, New York’s Actors Center, and in workshops in Boston, Los Angeles, NYC, and San Francisco, as well as in Barcelona, Bogota, Dublin, Havana, Ljubljana, London, Paris, Santiago, Shanghai, and Vancouver. In addition to voice, public speaking, and presence coaching, I do a wide range of communication-related teaching and consulting, including teaching theater games to Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas, consulting for the municipal government of Prague in their transition to democracy, doing conflict resolution in educational institutions (including a Zen center), and teaching creativity workshops in Russia. I was born in London, England, and lived most of my life in California, Michigan and New York. I spent a year in China (and still speak a little Mandarin) and have traveled all over the world for work and for pleasure. Appreciate your being here! -SK     Associates   To offer truly high quality services to organizations , I bring together a team of gifted colleagues. If you have problems with your voice, the answer may be obvious, but for most actors it's not so clear. So I'm going to begin by looking at two benefits of voice training that may not be obvious: the ability to be emotionally available and the ability to communicate when you're experiencing heightened states of emotion. While many factors can affect these two things, the linchpin of both is breathing. Simply put, developing a free and easily managed breathing system expands your emotional life and your ability to communicate when you're experiencing powerful emotions. You've probably noticed that sometimes when you're stressed - from fear or anxiety or frustration or sadness or the stress du jour - your body responds by getting tense. In addition to any physical protection tightening your muscles might offer, its main function is to protect you from the intensity of your experience. Tightening allows you to numb out, to create a sort of physical and psychological shield. This isn't a bad thing. It's a crucially important ability you have. Without it, life would sometimes be overwhelming. For the actor, however, this great ability to numb out in your life can become a great problem in your acting. If tightening becomes a habitual, unconscious process, it can stop you from being emotionally available at the most inopportune times: in auditions, or when playing a character who vividly feels emotions that you habitually avoid. Over time the unconscious habit of tightening your muscles can turn into chronic tightening in some parts of your body, creating a kind of body armor that keeps protecting you even after the cause of the stress is gone. This is fine for some people, but it's bad for you as an actor who needs to be emotionally available on cue. If, like most people, you habitually avoid many kinds of discomfort, as part of your acting training you need to learn safe ways to embrace uncomfortable or unfamiliar parts of your experience, including those in your emotional life. A part of that process is learning that you have a choice to tighten or to stay open. In many ways, being open and breathing are the same thing. When you're breathing freely, it's hard to be tight. When you're tight, it's hard to breathe freely. Try this: tighten your abdomen and then try to take a deep breath. It’s difficult, right? In the simplest terms, the more you breathe (or the more free your breathing is) the more you feel; the less you breathe (or the more unconsciously tightened your breathing is) the less you feel. Think about the last time you played a character whose experience made you uncomfortable. Do you know if you were tensing your jaw, your neck, your shoulders, your chest, your stomach, your hips, groin, your perineum, your knees, your feet? Do you know if you were breathing? If you were breathing, do you know if you were controlling your breathing to minimize the experience? An unconscious habit of tightening your muscles and your breathing doesn’t only limit your experience, it also limits your voice. That's true for a lot of reasons. Perhaps the most central reason is this: breath is the energy source for your voice. No breath, no voice. Period. Try this: hold your breath and keep holding it while you talk about what you had for dinner yesterday. Go ahead. Did you make any sound at all? If so, you weren't holding your breath. The gentle pressure from your breathing vibrates your vocal folds -- they vibrate only about as loudly as a bee’s wings and the vibration becomes louder by resonating, amplifying in your body -- so naturally voice teachers are interested in breathing. In order for you to have a free, flexible, and powerful voice, your breathing needs to be both free and efficiently managed. Consequently, in many kinds of voice training, freeing the breathing and developing the ability to manage the breathing are both fundamental. And as a bonus, as you learn to free your breathing, you can also slowly learn to increase your capacity to feel a range of emotions (rather than unconsciously avoiding your feelings). But feeling isn't everything - you've got words to speak, and often your characters can't afford to be overwhelmed by feeling because they've got important things to communicate. Once again, a flexible breathing system comes to play. Here's how. When you get emotional, you may have experienced your body tightening in response to the intensity of your experience. That tightness almost always constricts your breathing. If it’s hard to speak when you're very emotional it’s usually because you’ve tightened your breathing too much to speak or in your intensity you’ve forced too much breath out too quickly. The pitch of your voice might go up as a result of the tightening and lack of breath; just like a guitar string goes up in pitch when it's pulled tighter, when you have excess tension in your neck, your vocal folds and areas that typically resonate can tighten, making your pitch go up. You might also start to rush your words because you literally don't have enough breath to sustain your spoken thought. Having a trained breathing system can help you get the words out, literally, and get them out with relative ease. If that sounds good, it's important to recognize that it’s only half the story. Tightening is human. Characters might tighten sometimes or all of the time. An actor needs to be free to tighten whenever it's appropriate. It’s just that you don’t want to tighten habitually, unconsciously, always in the same way. You need to have the option to be responsive to the situation you’re in. By helping you free and then manage your breathing, good voice training helps you increase the options available to you: to feel more, or to feel less; to speak more easily when stressed or to speak with more difficulty — all are useful to you, and all should be available to you. Different approaches to voice training treat breathing in different ways. The approach that I teach, Fitzmaurice Voicework (developed by my mother, Catherine Fitzmaurice), has a strong emphasis on freeing the breathing in healthy ways through specific adaptations of yoga, Shiatsu, and Reichian bodywork combined with classical voice training techniques. To simplify the description of the process a little, you begin Fitzmaurice Voicework by learning a sequence of physical positions that helps your body breathe freely while encouraging a deep release of old patterns of tension. Once your breathing is more free, you learn how to use your breath in a highly efficient and organic way for speaking. Other major teachers of voice training, for instance Kristin Linklater, Arthur Lessac, Cicely Berry, Patsy Rodenburg and Roy Hart, have all addressed freeing and using the breath in different and helpful ways. The process and benefits of voice training are individual Private Coaching in Public Speaking and Voice — Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home About Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials Resources Contact Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home / About / Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services / Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials / Resources / Contact / Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Communicate what really matters Private Coaching in Public Speaking and Voice Private Coach in voice and public speaking, Saul Kotzubei, offers these services in Los Angeles. Do you offer remote sessions for public speaking, voice, communication, or presence? Yes, I teach using Zoom and other services. Online sessions work remarkably well and for some people have obvious advantages over in-person sessions. That said, if you are able to work in person at some point, that is also worth trying in order to discover what helps you most. What are your rates? My rates for private coaching are on this page (a couple of paragraphs down). Rates for workshops and other group coaching vary. You can find my group and corporate Rate Sheet on my Group Coaching page (part way down, in the Fees section). You can find rates for my public speaking workshops on that page. How do your rates compare with other coaches? My regular rates are competitive with other quality coaches. My discounted rates make it possible for more people to work with me. There are great coaches who charge less than I do. If I'm too expensive, I’m happy to give you excellent referrals. Do you offer a free first session or consultation? I don’t offer free first sessions. We begin working as soon as we meet, and I give you 100% of my attention. Before committing to a session, however, if you want to talk on the phone or over Zoom for fifteen minutes to ask questions, share something about your specific context, or hear my voice, I’m glad to do that. If I need your sliding scale, do I really choose how much to pay you? It’s on the honor system based on your ability to pay, and I rely on you to determine the maximum amount you are able to pay within my sliding scale (without harming yourself). If you prefer that I set the price for you, let me know your general financial circumstances, and I will suggest an amount to pay within my range. Do you work with children?  It’s rare that I work with children. I do however know great coaches who do. Please ask for a referral. Do you help with accent reduction or dialects? I don't, but I know excellent coaches who I can put you in touch with. Ask me. On this subject, I also have a strong point of view: the idea of accent reduction is not nearly as helpful for most people as accent acquisition -- rather than making it your goal to reduce or eliminate your accent in order to become American-sounding, make it your goal to acquire a clear American accent. This way you become more, not less, of yourself; and you can embody more possibilities of who you are, not fewer. Later in your work, this distinction can make a big difference not only to your voice but also to your sense of self.  Do you help people prepare songs for auditions? Sometimes. We can use your own backing tracks. I can't if you need me to accompany you on an instrument, or you are needing ear training or music theory. In that case, ask me for a great referral. What Will We Do? (See SERVICES and ABOUT/MY APPROACH in the navigation links above) What should I expect in a first private session? The first session is a little longer than a standard session. We’ll talk, I’ll ask you a lot of questions. My goal will be for both of us to have a sense of whether we’re a good fit, and for you to have a glimpse of what our work will be and how it can help you. If you want more information, you can request an info sheet with all the basic details. How are you different from other coaches? The hallmark of my work is using a wide variety of principles and approaches along with a razor-sharp focus on learning what really works for you. I’m also willing to fail with you in a particular exploration—with a good spirit—in order to discover what really works for you rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. I have real problems. Can you help me? If we're a good fit. Even if we are a good fit, some clients need additional support beyond me, and I may suggest seeing someone else while continuing to work with me. Depending on what's needed, it could for example be a movement specialist, a therapist, a body worker, or an ear, nose and throat doctor (ENT). Can you make me sound confident? I’m not so interested in making you sound confident (because in my experience that doesn’t lead to great results). I am interested in helping you become confident (the root of the word confidence means trust ), and then helping you reveal that confidence in the circumstances you are in. Can you help me conquer my fear of public speaking? I approach anxiety and fear as natural and common experiences that need to be worked with skillfully rather than obliterated. Trying to conquer fear is like trying to conquer your own arm—”conquering” isn’t so helpful because it’s a natural part of you. I, for example, still feel anxious before I speak in front of a group of people I don’t know, but I can experience that anxiety as supportive rather than detrimental. Fear, when worked with well, can help you communicate more effectively. That said, many people’s problem with fear becomes a fear of fear itself (which creates an unhelpful feedback loop), and our work may lessen your fear or help you realize it’s in fact truly manageable. This could apply to stage fright, fear of public speaking, fear of high stakes conversations, social anxiety, and fear of intimate conversations. See an article by me on fear of public speaking and performance anxiety . Will you be able to teach me a few steps to make me great? Commitment can lead someone to being good. Passion and curiosity can lead to more. I wish I could teach these, truly, but it's your responsibility to bring them to our work. Do I have to roll around on the floor and make strange sounds? Nope. What we do depends on your needs. Some people do floor work, others work entirely in chairs or standing. Some clients will make a lot of sound, others won't. Is touch necessary? When it's helpful, my work can involve touch. Often it doesn’t, and there is no touch requirement. Consent is a foundation of my work. You say you teach Public Speaking. What areas do you cover? I work with people in a wide range of related areas: presentations or speeches (this can include working on developing a presentation or delivering a presentation, helping you learn how to prepare content or delivery, working with technical issues such as PowerPoint or microphones, etc.), communication challenges at work, developing leadership through more effective communication, working with anxiety, preparation for interviews, hosting, pitches, high-stakes meetings, media appearances, press conferences, trials, etc. You say you teach Voice. The relationship between breathing and voice is rich and complex. Here I’ll briefly describe some of the aspects of that relationship which you’ll encounter in the first part of Fitzmaurice Voicework, Destructuring . The basic process of Destructurin g involves putting yourself into various physical positions and then inviting your experience, your breathing, and your voice to unfold spontaneously. As you do this, your breathing begins to open in places where it has been inflexible. At the same time, parts of your body, feelings, imagination, voice, and awareness of the outside world that have been chronically limited, for any number of reasons, also begin to open. Throughout this process of Destructuring , the breathing is central. Here’s why: Breath is the energy for voice: EXERCISE: hold your breath and speak or sing at the same time. Did you make any sound? If so, you weren’t really holding your breath. Breath pressure is required to make sound; it is the energy source for your voice. No breath, no voice. Simple. Restricted breathing constricts the throat and the voice: When the breathing in the torso is restricted, and there is too little air to sustain sound easily, the throat constricts in order to prolong the exhaled airflow, to help you keep on speaking or singing . For some people this restriction is chronic and for some it happens only in specific contexts. When the breathing is freer and there is more range of capacity, the throat and voice do not need to constrict to prolong airflow. EXERCISE: without inhaling first, express the following thought WITH GLEE five times without stopping to inhale: “I am the greatest performer of all time.” Don’t push too hard and hurt yourself! Notice what happens. Does your throat constrict? Some of you may notice that your pitch rises like it does for some people when they are emotional. It isn’t so much a “pitch problem”: it is the direct result of constricted breathing and the tightening that is a part of that. Likewise, some of you will notice that you are rushing to get the words out. In this case, it’s not really a “speeding” problem; it’s a lack of air. Excessive force of breath constricts the throat and the voice: Here we have the opposite problem – too much force rather than too little – but the results are the same. When the breath is forced out too quickly, the throat constricts to prolong airflow so you can sustain sound. When the breathing is more free and easy, the throat and voice do not need to constrict to prolong airflow. EXERCISE: blow air out and talk or sing at the same time. Don’t hurt yourself! You will notice either that it is impossible to sustain sound or that you need to limit the airflow to sustain sound. We can limit what we experience, and our sense of being present, by controlling and restricting our breathing: We can control our breathing to reduce the impact of difficult feelings and experiences. That’s not a bad thing. It’s an important ability we have. For performers, a problem arises when our ability to manage our difficult experience by controlling our breathing becomes an instant, habitual, and largely unconscious response. Over time, many aspects of our experience can become unconsciously locked away and unavailable. It is very hard to express vocally what you cannot experience, and performers often push the voice to compensate. In addition to causing the voice to be disassociated from the truth of the moment, this can also cause vocal strain or fatigue. EXERCISE: close your eyes and imagine that the experience you are having right now is extremely pleasurable… Take your time. There’s no need to be perfect with this… Notice your breathing. Now imagine that you really don’t want to be where you are now, that it feels wrong, perhaps a little unsafe. Don’t push this. Just touch in with it… Notice your breathing again. How has it changed? 90% of the time, people’s breathing will become easier in the first scenario and harder in the second. I used to think that that was a very simple response. If I am comfortable my breathing would be easy, and if I am uncomfortable, my breathing would become more restricted or otherwise controlled. But I think something more interesting is happening: If I am willing to have the experience I am having, my breathing will help me by becoming more free; if I am not willing to have the experience I am having, my breathing will help me by becoming more restricted such that it limits my access to my experience. It isn’t only internal experience that we can limit by controlling or restricting our breathing. We can also avoid the outside world. Learning to be with our experience fluidly, internal and external, while allowing ourselves to breathe, is a big step toward learning to be more present. We can limit what we express by restricting our breathing: Restricting or limiting our expression at times is a normal and helpful ability. However, most of us have internalized so completely a belief that certain kinds of expression (such as joy, sadness, power, vulnerability, etc.) are not okay that we chronically inhibit our breathing to stop the expression. This inhibition of the breathing is achieved by tightening muscles and by limiting muscular movement. This not only limits our expression in the moment, but over time it also chronically “armors” the body in a protective tightness. This armoring, in turn, reduces access to our experience, to our impulses, which then further limits our ability to express and communicate. An analogous process happens with bodily injury. If you sprain an ankle, your body very intelligently swells to prevent movement. If after the sprain is healed you don’t begin to move your ankle, it will become chronically stiff. In this way temporary tightness can become chronic armoring that limits the healthy functioning of the body. So in some sense Destructuring is a gentle invitation to experience movement where there has been holding. Places we have chronically inhibited breathing limit resonance: In order to produce a sound, you need three things: an energy source, something that vibrates, and a resonator (a place for the vibrations to multiply). For our voices, the energy source is the exhaled breath, what vibrates are the vocal folds, and the resonator is the whole body. When parts of the body are chronically tight, our resonance is diminished: The entire torso can be involved in breathing, and chronic inhibitions in the breathing tighten and lock the torso. This in turn limits resonance and the feeling of the whole body vibrating, experiencing a sonic massage, as we make sound. Sometimes the trapping of experience, expression and breathing hap Myths — Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home About Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials Resources Contact Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home / About / Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services / Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials / Resources / Contact / Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Communicate what really matters Myths Common myths about public speaking.  Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Home / About / Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services / Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials / Resources / Contact /   MYTHS ABOUT PUBLIC SPEAKING   It's important to look at each person for 3 seconds (or any other specific number of seconds) while I speak. This leads to robotic speeches and presentations. Instead of counting the seconds, learn to feel the audience and sense when it's helpful to shift your focus. If I can just get rid of my anxiety, I'll be fine. You might feel fine, but it's likely you'll also be flat. When you try to dull anxiety, this either makes it worse or it tends to dull all feelings. A presentation without feeling might as well just be a report on paper. One key is learning how to welcome and make use of the energy that you experience as anxiety.  Here's  an article which references good research on dealing with performance anxiety. Here's a good TED Talk that addresses the significance of how we view and deal with stress. The realities of what leads to effective public speaking are more nuanced than in the study or TED Talk, but the principles are worth understanding. Here’s an article I wrote about one key aspect of intense public speaking or performance anxiety . It helps to imagine the group with their pants pulled down. This could help if you hold people in too high esteem, or if your goal is to talk to a bunch of half-naked people. But instead of doing this, try focusing on what matters to you and your audience. If you're not sure what that is, figure it out. It will make it much easier for the people you're talking with to follow you. If I pause, or slow down, I'll lose the group's interest. A well-timed pause, or just about any pause in which you're present, tends to draw an audience closer to you. It makes them wonder what you're thinking, what you’re going to say next. And their curiosity is a good thing. Talking quickly often makes an audience feel like you don't really want to be there. If I prepare, I won't be spontaneous. This is half true: there are better and worse ways to prepare. But if you learn to prepare in ways that really work for you, it leaves you open to responding to what is happening in the moment. And that engages an audience.   Home / About / Who I Am My Approach What Matters to Me FAQ Services / Private Coaching Group Coaching for Organizations Public Workshops & Classes Teacher Certification Testimonials / Resources / Contact / Voice, Public Speaking, & Presence Coach Saul Kotzubei Saul Kotzubei is a Master Teacher of the Fitzmaurice approach to voice training. The anxiety and fear associated with public speaking and performing can be truly challenging, and there's no single right way to approach it. What helps one person is often very different from what helps another. That said, there are basic ways to make sense of the anxiety and fear that can be a useful starting place for many people. Here’s one of these ways of making sense—something you can think of as a loop of anxiety— and I hope it will be helpful. At the outset, it’s important to recognize that anxiety and fear are involuntary reactions to a perceived threat. In some cases, these reactions are helpful because they protect you in times of real danger. In other cases, however, these reactions emerge when there is no obvious external threat or the nature of the threat is vague (like when speaking publicly to a group, or when performing). Experiencing a familiar but somehow vague threat while speaking or performing can be uncomfortable, but with a lot of experience or good training, these involuntary reactions can become manageable (even helpful). That said, there’s another kind of difficulty associated with fear of speaking or performing that can seem truly baffling: the difficulty that arises when you begin to perceive your involuntary stress reactions themselves as a threat. When your involuntary stress reactions themselves become a threat, a loop forms. Here’s an example of how this can play out: I have to speak soon, and my mouth is drying up… Oh no, my mouth is dry! Not again. I'm nervous. I wish this wouldn't... It's not going away... Oh, it's getting worse. My heart is speeding up. Why is this happening again...? It's getting... I’m too nervous… My chest is tightening, legs shaking, throat constricting, vision narrowing, mind blanking… (If reading that was fine, great! Skip to the next paragraph. If reading that was stressful, and you want help with the stress, take a moment now to read this paragraph. Once you’ve read this paragraph, go through it again, taking your time to explore these two steps: 1) Look at your surroundings. Notice what your eyes like to see around you. Really take the time to clock that before you go on... 2) Again look around your environment. If you’re not being threatened by anyone or anything, it’s likely you’re safe in this moment. Let yourself really register that…) The loop works something like this: at some point in the past, you developed a negative view of your threat response (faster heartbeat, sweaty palms, shaky legs, tight chest, shaky voice, etc.). Now, when you’re in a situation in which you feel anxious or afraid, you notice your threat response, and you perceive this response itself as a threat—which in turn causes even more fear. This escalating fear then generates even more threat response. Which then generates greater fear. And so on and so on, in a self-perpetuating loop. Essentially what’s happened is this: you've developed an adversarial relationship with your own involuntary experience. And when you begin to view fear as your enemy, it’s as if you are beginning to go to war with yourself. In some cases, this works itself out naturally. In some cases, seeking out a gifted mental health professional or trauma specialist is most helpful. In some cases, it’s really helpful to work with a public speaking or acting coach who specializes in stage fright and fear of public speaking. The choice of what path to take depends in part on why you’re wanting help. The process with which you address your public speaking fear or performance anxiety may include general approaches to working with stress and anxiety as well as approaches specifically tailored to your circumstances. The good news is that once you really understand what's happening, and you have clear ways of addressing it, what once felt terrible and terribly confusing can begin to feel SO MUCH BETTER. If this loop seems familiar to you, here are some areas you might want to explore: Your body and breathing : these house your primary involuntary threat responses, and the relationship you have to your body and breathing (especially when under stress) can dramatically affect your sense of confidence, presence, and freedom. Your relationship to groups and to your environment : you may have habits of perception that make being present and communicating in groups much more difficult than it needs to be. Your content, and your connection to your content : when your material is clear, and you have a strong and helpful connection with it, speaking and performing can become much, much easier. Your goals for speaking or performing : you may have conscious or unconscious goals that unintentionally increase your stress, and you may be able to discover new goals that not only reduce your stress but also help you focus much more clearly on what matters. Your emotions and mindset: how you make sense of your emotions and thoughts can deeply affect how you feel. Your preparation habits : the way you prepare for speaking or performing can unintentionally make it much harder, and so much less effective, than it needs to be. Your relevant history : sometimes your history holds important clues about your fear of public speaking—or your fear of performing—as well as what could help you. So many people come to me looking to overcome stage fright, and that totally makes sense. But the goal to overcome stage fright can actually reinforce stage fright— because that goal is rooted in a sense that stage fright itself is a threat. Overcoming stage fright is fundamentally different from making friends with stage fright and learning to work with it in helpful ways. If fear of public speaking or fear of performing is preventing you from offering your best to the world, if stage fright trips you up, and what you’ve tried on your own hasn’t worked, consider finding help. Since coaches and therapists each work so differently, and because the work needs to be nuanced and tailored to you, it’s worth taking the time to find someone who is a really good fit for you. Some people prefer therapy, and this makes sense. Some people prefer to use voice, public speaking, acting, presence, or breathing coaches for help with speaking anxiety, performance anxiety, and stage fright, and this also makes sense. The word anxious comes from the Latin word angere , which means to choke . Your breath, your voice, your ability to speak are all are intertwined — and all can be profoundly affected by anxiety and fear. However you choose to work on it, eventually you might just view the onset of your nerves as a sign, a truly positive sign, that you’re about to do something thrilling. Because anxiety about speaking was holding me back in both areas, I took a class in Fitzmaurice Voicework ®, and to my surprise I realized I was home. Its emphasis on being present, relaxed, and vibrant, and bringing that to communication, became the perfect bridge for my coaching practice which over time became more and more focused on voice, public speaking, and presence. For more information, see My Approach to Voice . Soon after I began teaching in 1999, I realized that cookie-cutter approaches to communication training don’t create fundamental, lasting change. I founded Voice Coach L.A. to offer a highly individualized, practical inquiry into what really helps each client. My clients include corporate and non-profit leaders, TED speakers and Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actors and producers. I’ve taught at NYU, and given public workshops in Boston, Los Angeles, NYC, and San Francisco, and internationally in Barcelona, Bogota, Dublin, Havana, Ljubljana, London, Paris, Santiago, Shanghai, and Vancouver. In addition to voice and public speaking coaching, I do a wide range of communication-related teaching and consulting: I’ve taught theater games to Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas, consulted for the municipal government of Prague in their transition to democracy, done conflict resolution in educational institutions (and at a Zen center), and taught creativity workshops in Russia. Since our work together can help increase your influence, I want to be clear about what I stand for — and what I won’t support. I stand for basic human dignity.   I won’t help anyone use their voice to degrade or dehumanize others — on the basis of gender, sexuality, race, immigration status, disability, economic position, or any other dimension of human identity. I stand for the responsible use of power.   I won’t support the use of power as an end in itself — having power does not confer the right to use it without restraint or accountability. I also won’t support advocacy that fails to take seriously foreseeable harm — even when the intent is good. I stand for recognizing that we are a part of and dependent on the world we live in.   I won’t support the careless destruction of the natural systems everything depends on. I stand for open-hearted curiosity and discernment. I believe that good people can hold genuinely different views about how to live, and that these differences deserve open-hearted curiosity. I also recognize that some people act on their beliefs in ways that cause harms that I can’t make peace with. Acknowledging that isn't a failure of open-heartedness — it's an expression of it. I aspire to keep learning and stay open-hearted, even in fierce disagreement. The commitments I’ve articulated here aren’t a wall; they’re a foundation — the conditions I believe are necessary for real difference to exist and be held with care.
