Superintendent's Message
Hello and welcome to the Whittier Union High School District website. I am Dr. Monica Oviedo and I have the privilege to serve as Whittier Union’s Superintendent. Although new to this role, I’m not new to our district and this amazing community. Over the past 25 years, I’ve served in various capacities including teacher, assistant principal, principal of both Santa Fe High (2004 - 2009) and Pioneer High (2009-2016). Most recently, I led the Business Services Division (2016-2020) and led the Educational Services Division (2020-2022) as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services.
Serving students and families of the greater Whittier community is deeply personal for me. I was born and raised in Whittier, attended many of our local schools and have continued to make Whittier my home. As a long-time resident, I am deeply committed to ensuring that every one of our students receive a first-class education taught by a highly qualified and collaborative team of teachers, counselors, support staff and administrators in state of the art facilities.
Over the years, I’ve been asked Why do you choose to lead? My response is always the same: because I want for the students of our schools, what I would want for my own two sons - a college education. I know that a college education is an advantage for life. Our Whittier Union students who graduate college- and career-ready have demonstrated that they are effective communicators, quality producers, critical thinkers and collaborative workers. As such, they are very likely to contribute to the success of their families and uplift our communities.
I’m genuinely looking forward to this new role in which to serve and doing Whatever It Takes to ensure our students continue To Achieve and Maintain Excellence.

Zamora and Iniguez are captains of the cross country and cheer teams, respectively, and both have maintained a 4.0 GPA during their time at Santa Fe High. “It’s been such an honor to watch Benjamin and Itzel grow over the course of four years,” Santa Fe athletic director Jennifer Hughes said. “To see them mature as athletes and campus leaders has been wonderful. They represent what Santa Fe is all about.” Zamora has been a member of the Santa Fe cross country and track & field teams since he was a freshman and has helped lead his team to the CIF playoffs. Zamora also participated in the CIF-SS-Ford cross country Div. 3 finals in November 2025. For the Chiefs, the speedy Zamora is on the starting blocks for the 3-mile run, 1600 meters, 800 meters, and 4x4 1600-meter relays. In the classroom, Zamora has taken numerous Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including AP Government and Economics and AP Statistics. Looking to major in public health, Zamora has committed to Cal State University, San Marcos, where he will continue his passion for running as a member of the cross country and track teams, while studying to become a nurse practitioner. “It sounds hard to balance out the athletics and academics, but I keep everything well maintained. It can get tough if I have a lot of homework after practice. Coach [Erik] Mallory has played a big part in helping me become better,” Zamora said. “My favorite moments are the big races…the night races. It’s a great atmosphere, with everybody rooting for you, including teammates and family.” Iniguez is a Posse Foundation scholar who has committed to Pepperdine University, where she plans to study biology. Commuting to Santa Fe High from her home in South Gate, Iniguez has never hesitated to challenge herself. Joining the cheer team as a freshman, Iniguez has developed into one of the school’s top cheerleaders. After serving as STUNT captain in her junior year, Iniguez was named Varsity cheer captain her senior year. Iniguez also keeps a full schedule of AP courses, including AP Human Anatomy, AP Calculus, and AP English Literature. As a four-year member of the college prep elective, Advancement Via Individual Determination, and president of Santa Fe’s Interact Club, Iniguez successfully balances schoolwork, athletics, and home life. She also received an Award of Merit from the Whittier Union Board of Trustees in March. “It’s a big honor to be named a student-athlete of the year. I never did cheer before I came to Santa Fe, but I love the athleticism and the opportunity to switch from cheer to STUNT,” Iniguez said. “More than anything, I love going to the football games and hanging out with my friends. If you put yourself out there and try new things, you will always be on the path to learning.” The CIF-SS-Ford academic award program recognizes high schools and individual scholar-athletes for their hard work and dedication to excelling in academics and sports. “Congratulations to Benjamin and Itzel for being selected to represent Santa Fe High and our outstanding scholar-athletes,” Santa Fe principal Craig Campbell said. “Both Benjamin and Itzel came to Santa Fe with purpose, and it has been a joy to watch them develop into academic and campus leaders.” PHOTO CAPTION WUHSD_ATHLETES1: Santa Fe High School seniors Benjamin Zamora and Itzel Iniguez were both recognized as CIF-SS-Ford 2026 Student-Athletes of the Year, reflecting their commitment to excellence on the playing field and the classroom. County Finalist Whittier Union Junior Selected as Distinguished Women of L.A. County Finalist When La Serna High School junior Gianna Sarmiento began looking for post-secondary scholarship opportunities, she searched for a program that could not only pave the way for success in college and career, but one that was also competitive and allowed her to showcase her academic prowess and creative abilities. Sarmiento was one of just 22 Southern California students selected as a finalist for the Distinguished Young Women (DYW) of Los Angeles County’s Class of 2027 Showcase, held April 18, where she competed for an opportunity to represent L.A. County at the Distinguished Young Women of California showcase in July. Though Sarmiento was not among the four young women chosen to represent the state, as part of the DYW Los Angeles County Class of 2027 she is eligible for college scholarships at a select list of universities and colleges across the United States, with potential scholarships worth anywhere from $1,000 to $31,000 a year. “My experience with the DYW program has been great,” Sarmiento said. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful women. I’m making connections and receiving excellent advice on college and careers. When I first came to the program, I was a little intimidated. But they have made me feel so welcome.” The DYW Showcase competition is divided into five categories: scholastics, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression. A judge’s panel awards points in each category. “I was excited for the talent portion,” Sarmiento said. “I’ve played piano for about 10 years but have never really put myself out there. But I’m a competitor, so this was a perfect chance for me to showcase my skills. For the panel interview, it was intimidating to be interviewed by five judges, but to have my public speaking skills both tested and improved was an amazing experience for me.” The DYW is a national scholarship program that promotes academics, leadership, and talent in young women who receive opportunities to earn scholarships and develop their skills through the DYW Life Skills Workshop. Sarmiento said she discovered DYW while searching for scholarship opportunities through La Serna’s College and Career Center. “I am interested in majoring in public health and am looking towards a career as a pediatric oncologist,” Sarmiento said. “My dream colleges are UCLA and UC San Diego, which are expensive, so I have been looking for scholarships to help pay my way through college.” Sarmiento has developed into a campus leader since she arrived at La Serna and enjoys volunteering her time to help her classmates, especially incoming freshmen. Sarmiento is also a member of Link Crew, a program designed to make new students feel welcome as they transition from middle school. Sarmiento helps to organize La Serna’s Summer Bridge program, which allows incoming freshmen an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the campus and meet their new classmates. Sarmiento also serves as a mentor for La Serna English learners. Sarmiento is an avid reader and a member of La Serna’s Creative Writing Club Board, where she contributes short stories. One of Sarmiento’s favorite authors is Kristen Hannah, whose 2024 novel “The Women,” which focuses on the overlooked contributions and trauma of women on the battlefield, particularly resonated with her. “We are so proud of Gianna for being selected as a Distinguished Young Woman. She is truly an inspiration for any Lancer student who is looking to empower themselves with knowledge and leadership opportunities,” La Serna principal Griselda Castro said. “We can’t wait to see where the future takes Gianna.” PHOTO CAPTION WUHSD_DYW1: La Serna High School junior Gianna Sarmiento was one of just 22 Southern California students selected as a finalist for the Distinguished Young Women of Los Angeles County’s Class of 2027 Showcase, held April 18.
