About the Court
It is the mission of this Court to resolve disputes arising under the law in a fair, accessible, effective, and efficient manner; and to interpret and apply the law consistently, impartially, and independently to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitutions of California and the United States of America.
Alpine County is situated along the eastern border of the State of California, astride the crest of the Sierra Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,204, making it California's least populous county. The county seat is Markleeville, and the largest community is Alpine Village.
The courthouse was built in 1928 out of local rhyolite tuff in a Romanesque Revival style. As of 2004 the courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.

Community Outreach
Community outreach in a small county is a part of everyday activity. Judges campaign door-to-door for election and have the opportunity to talk to every citizen directly about the court and their perceptions of the services rendered. Formal opportunities, facilities, or activities that exist for community outreach in larger communities are not present in Alpine County. There is no high school or college in Alpine County. There are no service clubs, no radio or television broadcasters, and only a limited monthly newspaper. Only a few opportunities exist, or can be created, for the purpose of reaching the approximately 1,200 residents of the county. This plan contemplates the limited opportunities for community outreach in Alpine County, and incorporates the admonition from the members of the Alpine County community that public funds not be spent on public relations activities.

The California Courts Self-Help Center is a resource for the public that covers multiple topics, including traffic. Traffic and Infraction Violations General Information Alpine Superior Court's Traffic Division handles infraction violations of the California Vehicle Code by adults or juveniles, and infraction violations of other codes such as Alpine County Ordinances. An infraction is a violation, or failure to comply with, a certain provision of a code, ordinance, or other law. Most traffic tickets are an infraction violation of the California Vehicle Code such as speeding, having a broken tail light, or having outdated registration . An infraction is not punishable by imprisonment; the maximum sentence on most infractions is a $250 fine (plus assessments and fees). You may not be sentenced to alternate jail time on an infraction and cannot have a trial by jury. Misdemeanor or felony violations of the Vehicle Code (such as DUIs) are handled by the Criminal Division . Parking Violations are handled by the Alpine County Parking Agent as a civil penalty. [email protected] Resolving Your Ticket Courtesy Notice After receiving a traffic or other infraction citation, the court will mail a courtesy notice to the address on your citation . It can take up to 4-6 weeks for the court to receive and then process courtesy notices. On the notice, the court notifies you of: Your docket number, which is the case number for the court. Your appearance date. Alpine County Superior Court calendars all traffic defendants based off of the response date on your citation. You do not need to call to put yourself on calendar. If you do not intend to appear, this is your due date. Your bail, or fine amount. The court provides payment options on the back of the courtesy notice. Your options for appearing or resolving your traffic case without appearing in court. General eligibility criteria for Traffic School. If more than 6 weeks have passed since you received your citation and you have not received a courtesy notice, you may call the court clerk's office. Court staff will confirm your current mailing address. Note: Not receiving your courtesy notice is not a legal excuse for failing to take care of the citation by its due date. To Appear in Court You may appear in person at the Alpine County Courthouse on the scheduled date and time on your courtesy notice. If you did not receive your courtesy notice, appear at the courthouse at 10:00 a.m. on the date noted on your citation. This date is found at the upper left hand corner of your citation. A box is checked next to either "Appear in Court at _" or "Respond to Citation Before _". You may appear remotely via Zoom, a videoconference platform, for no cost. To sign up for a remote appearance, call the Clerk’s Office at the following number no later than five days prior to your appearance date: (530) 694-2113, Ext. 2. Alpine County Superior Court allows for all traffic matters to be heard remotely, up to and including trial. For more information about appearing by Zoom, go to " Remote Appearances ". To Request a Trial If you wish to contest your citation, you may enter a plea of not guilty and request trial in one of two ways: a Court Trial, or a Trial by Written Declaration. Go to " Contesting Your Ticket " for more information. If You Fail to Respond To Your Citation If you fail to appear in court, pay your fine in full, or make alternative arrangements with the Court by the due date on your citation, you will be deemed to have elected to have a trial by declaration in absentia pursuant to California Vehicle Code section 40903. If you are found guilty, you will be charged the bail amount shown on your courtesy notice. If you do not pay your bail on or before the due date, you will receive an additional civil assessment of up to $100.00 for your failure to appear, and the Court will refer your account to an outside collection agency or California Franchise Tax Board, which may include wage garnishments and/or attachments of your bank accounts and personal property. Before You Join the Hearing Download Zoom to the device you plan to use for the hearing, and create an account if you do not have one. Use your full first and last name as it is shown on your driver's license or court documentation. It is recommended to include your case/ docket number if you have room. Please make sure you are not using a username or nickname that is inappropriate to be shown in court. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with computer technology, please consider using the telephone call-in number in the Zoom invite to participate. How to Join Check your email for your Zoom Invite from the court clerk's office. If you did not receive your invite, contact the clerk’s office no later than the Friday before your hearing. Join the Zoom Meeting 10 minutes before your scheduled time. Clicking on the link will open your browser (if on a computer) and prompt you to either open your Zoom application or select “Launch Meeting.” On a mobile device, clicking on the link will automatically open your Zoom application if installed. After you connect, a screen should load showing your face. After you see this screen, click join with video. Once you have joined, you will be placed into the Zoom Waiting Room. (When in the waiting room, you cannot hear or see the court proceedings. A courtroom clerk will still be able to message you to make requests or update you on the status of the proceedings. ) When the court is ready to hear your case, you will be allowed entry in the Zoom meeting from the waiting room. You will then see a message to “join with computer audio”, or “join with internet audio”. Choose the one that will allow you to connect with your device. Headset: We strongly recommend using headphones with a built-in microphone. If you do not have a headset with a microphone, you may join the video portion with your computer and use your phone for audio. Please keep yourself on mute until it is your turn to speak. When you are muted there is a red line through the microphone icon. You mute and unmute by clicking on this icon. Make sure the video icon does not have a red line through it when you enter the virtual session. Enabling video will allow others to see you. Call in Options If connecting by phone (without video), you will need to dial one of the phone numbers listed under “Dial by Location” on your Zoom Invite, or use the Toll-free option. When prompted, enter the meeting ID and Passcode. Pressing *6 will mute and unmute your phone.
