Ashby Village has a “volunteer-first” policy , finding a qualified volunteer to fulfill a request before referring members to a professional provider. Ashby Village volunteers include members (and their children and grandchildren!), students, empty nesters, retirees. Ways to Volunteer Support members : - Provide rides to medical appointments - Help with minor household repair - Computer and technology support - Light gardening - Friendly visitor or walking buddy Support the organization : - Marketing and Outreach - Events - Fundraising - Photography and Videography - Projects and Programs - Administrative Some benefits our volunteers enjoy : - Staying active – physically, mentally and socially - Connecting with others, and feeling part of community - Putting talents, skills and capacities to good use - Paying it forward – knowing that someday each of us will also need support It's Easy to Apply 1. Complete the Volunteer Application and submit 2. Attend an engaging half-day Volunteer Orientation and Training (offered quarterly in February, May, August and November) 3. Complete a Sterling Volunteers online background check and a DMV records check, if driving. ( To meet the requirements of our background checks policy, a social security number is required.) Today, Ashby Village membership has grown to include more than 450 older adults (and over 300 volunteers!) who live in Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Kensington, Oakland and Richmond. Each member brings to this community their unique life story – formed by their experiences, passions, talents and abilities, and the people they’ve met along the way. Enjoy getting to know some of them here! Meet Member Phyllis Isaacson A Meaningful Arrival in Berkeley Phyllis moved from Brooklyn, New York to Berkeley on October 12, 2012. She didn’t realize it then, but that day was auspicious for her. Why? Not because it was Columbus Day, but because it was NOT Columbus Day. She had arrived on what Berkeley called “Indigenous Peoples Day” instead – and that made all the difference! This was her introduction to Berkeley, a place where people are politically aware and active and are very sincere about their politics. Early Independence and a Life in New York Phyllis grew up in Shaker Heights, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. “It was an idyllic place to live,” she says. She recalls the independence she had as a child and teenager in a city that was accessible and safe for kids, with public transportation that could take them to downtown Cleveland or the local public library or to a movie theater. She continues to visit frequently with her friends and family there. In 1963, after two years at Sophie Newcomb College (then, the women’s college at Tulane), she moved to New York City to attend Columbia University. Throughout the rest of the 1960s, she was a 20-something “working girl” as a proofreader and copy editor in the college department of Harper & Row Publishers. In the following decade, she married Rick Isaacson, who worked in the sports management business, and they made their home in Brooklyn, New York. Once her sons could get around New York City by themselves, she went back to work – first at Zagat Survey, a national restaurant guide, and later at the James Beard Foundation, now the country’s premier culinary organization. After Rick's death in 2010, she moved to Berkeley, where both of her sons were living. Her older son, Daniel, is now a rabbi at Jewish Family and Children’s Services and has three sons of his own; her younger son, Andy, is a journalist and lives in the family home in Brooklyn Heights. Finding Community at Ashby Village Even before moving to Berkeley in 2011, Phyllis knew she would become involved at Ashby Village. She had met Andra Lichtenstein, former Chair of the Ashby Village Board, through Andra’s daughter, Cia, a colleague at the James Beard Foundation. She began as an office helper and has remained actively involved—helping organize the Clarewood Neighborhood Group and serving on the kitchen crew at Friday Social Hours. She is especially grateful for tech volunteers and enjoys the monthly hikes, as well as the Village's wide range of interesting and vital programs. “If you’re over 70 and concerned about your physical and mental well-being, Ashby Village is the best medicine there is,” she says. Meet Member Monroe Pastermack “I’m a dilettante,” says Monroe, “a dilettante experience collector.” And so he is. What else could you call someone whose interests and life’s work range from the sciences — archeology, ecology, entomology, geology, epidemiology, and parasitology — to human health, human sexuality, pyrotechnics, and allegorical pseudo-history? He has also been an avid baker, spelunker, and shell collector. Monroe has done it all. Widely educated and brimming with ideas, he continues to pursue new questions. Underlying it all is his fascination with culture — particularly the relationships between ecology and human health, and between culture and disease. Growing Up Between Worlds How did Monroe become such an academic adventurer, captivated by culture? He was born in New York City and grew up in a secular Ashkenazi Jewish household in an Irish Catholic–Jewish neighborhood. When he was 16, his parents’ work with Aramco took the family to Beirut, Lebanon, where Monroe spent his junior and senior years boarding at the American Community School of Beirut alongside the children of diplomats and missionaries. Living in a diverse Islamic/Christian country while attending a school rooted in Christian beliefs deepened his interest in diversity, geography, and the ways culture shapes experience. Following the Science Monroe spent a year studying geology at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico. After a summer working at the Climax Molybdenum Mine in Climax, Colorado, he transferred to Oregon State College (now Oregon State University). While earning his degree in entomology, he worked one summer in California as a Khapra beetle inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and two summers in Saudi Arabia as a medical entomologist studying malaria and other arthropod-borne diseases. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree, Monroe came to Berkeley for graduate work in parasitology, earning an MS. He lived at International House, where he was pleased to be surrounded by students from around the world. A Season of Change Following graduate school, Monroe enlisted in the Navy. Though those three years were a difficult period in his life, they included four months in Thailand, where he worked with military, Thai, and World Health professionals on disease prevention. In Okinawa, he and his corpsmen focused on disease prevention education for Marines. To relax, he collected seashells on the reefs and walked the beaches of Okinawa. During his time in Thailand, Monroe became increasingly angry with the military and U.S. government over its involvement with Air America, mercenary pilots, and the CIA. The wisdom he now shares is simple: “If you feel rage, seek help.” In 1967, he resigned his commission, returned to UC Berkeley, became active in anti-war efforts, and worked as a TA in medical entomology and a lab technician in molecular biology. He later entered UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, earning a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Administration. Over the next several decades, Monroe remained active in both the sciences and social sciences. He taught medical entomology and parasitology at Cal State Hayward and biology and Health Sciences at Diablo Valley College for 30 years. Connecting With Fellow Villagers & Staying Curious When Monroe and his wife Madeline learned about Ashby Village from a friend, they saw it as a way to continue living in their own home. He is active in the Clarewood neighborhood group and the Over 80s group — and now, the Over 90s group. Though he now uses a rollator walker because of arthritis, Monroe continues to follow world events throu Program teams of members and volunteers that keep Ashby Village thriving: Member Engagement, Member Support, Member Help at Home, Activities & Events, and Village Support - Ashby Village Skip to main content  Print This Page  Text Size  Scroll To Top Member Login My Shopping Cart Shopping Cart cancel Share This Page Share this page on Facebook Share this page on Linkedin Share this page on X/Twitter Menu NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER VOLUNTEER DONATE About Us About Ashby Village Staff, Board & Advisors Contact Us Visit Us Programs Direct Services & More Interest & Support Groups Neighborhood Groups Professional Providers Program Teams Join Become a Member Service Area Membership Fees This is Us: Meet a Member What Members Say How to Learn More Volunteer Become A Volunteer Volunteer Spotlight Support Us Donate Legacy Giving Calendar Home Program Teams Programs Teams That Connect and Care Ashby Village programs grow from the energy and creativity of members and volunteers working together to support older adults and strengthen community. We hear from our volunteers that providing this support is so rewarding that they often feel that they receive more than they give. Membership fees currently account for approximately 35% of the Ashby Village operating budget. The remaining 65% comes from donations made by generous individuals and community supporters, as well as grants from foundations that have made it possible to keep our fees from increasing since Ashby Village founded in 2010. Ashby Village offers memberships for individuals and households with annual, semi-annual, and quarterly payment options. Individual and household memberships are active for a period of 12 months and are renewable annually . The Ashby Village Legacy Circle recognizes donors whose generosity secures their personal legacy by carrying our mission into the future. Joining the Ashby Village Legacy Circle is one of the most powerful ways you can help create a lasting impact on older adults in the East Bay. Designating Ashby Village in your will, trust, or other charitable giving plans sustains the caring community, practical programs, and supportive services villagers rely on to live life on their own terms. A Gift in Your Will or Trust Including a charitable bequest in your will or revocable living trust is a gift that costs you nothing to make today (or during your lifetime), but will sustain Ashby Village programs and services into the future. Beneficiary Designation There’s no easier way to help older adults age with dignity, purpose, and self-determination than by naming Ashby Village as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance, annuity or donor advised fund. Qualified Charitable Distributions If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can give up to $100,000 per year from your traditional IRA to nonprofit organizations like Ashby Village and exclude the gift amount from your income, even if you don’t itemize. Non-Cash Assets Donating certain assets like appreciated stock or real estate can provide significant tax benefits to donors and provide Ashby Village with funding that will sustain our mission and deepen our impact in the community. Gifts That Pay Income Charitable Gift Annuities and Charitable Remainder Trusts can provide lifetime income and significant tax benefits while providing the financial support that is essential to ensure Ashby Village is here to empower older adults for years to come. Circle Stories Meet people just like you…ensuring a bright future for Ashby Village and our community. SUSAN PIERPOINT Legacy Circle Member Ashby Village supporter since 2012 Village life offers community and support, and also the opportunity to give back in meaningful ways not just to elders, but to the generations to come as well. I learned that having my kids as beneficiaries of my IRA is not a great idea because of the taxes they would have to pay. It was easy, really easy, to change beneficiaries of my IRA – and that is where my legacy gift to Ashby Village resides now. Some really interesting gifts offer income and tax advantages, like my gift annuity, that is working exactly the way I want it to work. I’ve been part of gatherings where people have asked, Why didn’t anyone tell us about these options sooner? In this chapter of my life, everything I do is legacy work – a chance to leave the world a bit better place. Get in Touch If you have any questions for us, we want to provide the best support for you. Please reach out! Also, if you’ve already included Ashby Village in your will or estate plan, let us know! Feeling at home at Ashby Village “ I went to a Sunday afternoon Living Room Chat. I even gave up a day of football to go, so I was serious! They answered a lot of my questions. They had a member talking about personal experience, which was what I wanted to hear. For me it was all just entirely satisfying. I felt right at home immediately.” Read more . DIANE & DON North Berkeley Neighborhood Group Coordinators “ I am always concerned about members getting isolated without the help they might need. One of my goals is to check in on inactive members", says Don . Read more . TOBEY K. “One reason neighborhood groups are working so well is that they really help us to get to know people in our own neighborhoods,” says Tobey Klein, who started the Emery Bunch neighborhood group with other founding members about five years ago. "Pat, I loved having your team and you here to wash my windows both inside and out. In addition to the service (and the windows do look beautiful!) it was just fun and such a nice group. Thanks so much once more - that great name "Hearts and Hands" says so much in just a few words, and the joy which you spread to the three volunteers. Thanks again. Janet" ANNETTE H. "Dear Jean, Thanks so much for being a volunteer! I really appreciated the ride to and from Carol's home for the Puzzle event. They are a great group of gals and working the puzzle is fun. It's people like you that makes Ashby Village so special!" Annette hugh H. "Dear AV, I'm writing to express particular appreciation for an Ashby Village volunteer. Melissa has provided invaluable help in solving mysteries in the operation of my automatic sprinkler system. Her knowledge in this area (and gardening, generally) and enthusiasm are a rare resource and perfectly suited to my request for assistance. Ashby Village and its members are fortunate to have them both as volunteers. Regards, Hugh " bill and tari F. “We had our first encounter with using the Ashby Village referral system. We needed a good reliable plumber, and SOON. Our kitchen sink was flooding and we couldn't find where the leak was coming from. We called Ashby Village and they gave us several referrals, including Naomi the Plumber. She was just what we needed, and she also fixed a five-year- long slow seepage on an outside pipe, all within half an hour!” -- Tari and Bill F. joan c. "My husband and I joined Ashby Village, excited by the concept and eager to discover what it might have to offer. My husband's wish to complete a memoir has been made possible by an amazing woman who is volunteering to help him finish work that he can no longer complete on is own. Michelle McGuinness now comes once a week and we have together crafted a form that works for Bob, and that promises completion of the project. An oral history, which will likely be transcribed into written form as well, is well underway. Michelle arrives with her Smart Phone and is videotaping stories which Bob will soon present to our family. This is incredibly satisfying to both of us, and we are so grateful to Ashby Village for finding Michelle and to the time she is donating to his work." -- Joan Cole bob d. “I want to thank Ashby Village for responding to my request and making a volunteer available to my wife during my brief trip to Maine following my brother's death and being with my sister during this grieving period. My wife Merle has been recovering from hip replacement surgery, and it gave me peace of mind to know she had someone to call if necessary. This is exactly what we had hoped for when we joined Ashby Village.” -- Bob Davis irene m. “Frozen yogurt delivery, prunes and prescription pick-up, pastries and tulips, split pea soup, cookies, caring professional advice from nurse and a social worker all came my way through Ashby Village. I want to thank Thelma Peck, Marion Anderson, Elaine Hooker and Charlotte Herzfeld who played such an important role in helping me heal after surgery on my knee. This is another example of the assistance the Village can provide and I want to call out the names of these wonderful women to whom I am so grateful. “ -- Irene Marcos herrick and elaine j. “We're some of those people who say that we don't yet need the help to remain in our homes. We're only 65 and 70! But we joined Ashby Village even before we moved here because we believe in the concept and want to help ensure there is such a service for others in the community. It's also an excellent way to meet people with common interests. Lo and behold, after we moved, the tags we so carefully put on our stereo before leaving Connecticut made a lot less sense once we tried to put the components back together. Ashby Village to the rescue. Volunteer Raynard Lozano set up our stereo in about an hour's time. We also attended the luncheon at Filippo's, so got to meet a few Ashby Village members. Although we moved to Berkeley to be near some of our children--our own"village"--we look forward to watching Ashby Village grow.” -- Herrick and Elaine Jackson marcia f. “Shortly after joining the Village, I needed to re-hang art after a paint job. Since I don't climb ladders anymore, I needed help. I thought about using the Village's concierge service to get a volunteer, but I found myself hesitating to do so for weeks on end. I finally made the call after struggling with myself to ask for help, and the next day member-volunteer Paul Axelrod came over and hung the pictures exactly as I wanted them. But why was it so difficult to make that phone call? Ashby Village is fueled by five generations of volunteers, ranging in age from 16 to 94. Many of our more than 300 volunteers are Ashby Village members themselves and they enjoy the opportunities to help their fellow members. Some volunteers collaborate on program teams and at the highest levels of leadership, some provide direct member services, and others lend a hand on specific events, projects, and in the office. Collectively, our volunteers are truly the heartbeat of our village. We're grateful for the rich life experience each individual shares with our community, and we're sure that you'll enjoy getting to know a few of them! Meet Volunteer Mimi Woff January 2026 Smack in the Right Place Mimi moved to the Bay Area with her family in 1961. She was born into the helping fields, as her parents were both therapists and political activists. As an 8th grader, Mimi earned her activist’s badge of honor: a three-day suspension from school when she spearheaded a walkout at Willard Jr. High School in Berkeley to protest the Vietnam War. The need to protest was completely obvious to Mimi, who had been attending antiwar demonstrations with her parents from early childhood. She attended the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz for two years before transferring to the University of Washington, where she completed her undergraduate studies in History and subsequently earned a master’s degree in social work. She stayed in Seattle working as a medical and psychiatric social worker. After 14 years in the Northwest, Mimi returned to the Bay Area and shifted her career to social science research at UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley. She managed community-based research projects, developed protocols and consent forms, trained and led research assistants in recruitment and interviewing, worked as a field interviewer. Since 2005, Mimi also has been on the Institutional Review Board at the Public Health Institution, which reviews human subjects research to ensure the protection of research participants’ rights and confidentiality. Mimi and her partner spent two winter seasons (Nov – May) on their sailboat in Mexico during consecutive pandemic years. An enriching, life-changing experience that brought her close to nature and sailing on the open seas. Caring is Camaraderie When it comes to caring for herself, Mimi loves physical activity, including dancing and hiking, and has a fondness for swimming, particularly on Master’s teams for the last 35 years. The camaraderie on the Master’s teams is one of the great aspects of participating on the team. Mimi is in love with her sweet 3½ year old dog, Cinnamon. The two share their own kind of camaraderie as they walk, play, swim and snuggle together. In the early days at Ashby Village, Mimi helped in the office, shopped for members and was a participant on the Social Care Team. Soon she realized that her place was on the Connections Team (CT), where she remains as a co-leader with Jane Selby. Mimi’s face lit up talking about this work. “Volunteers may forget this as an available service, so much is mentioned during orientation and not everything sticks.” As loneliness rises nationwide, providing companionship is one of the most important things we can do for Villagers. The CT is currently looking to match three members with a CT volunteer who will meet regularly to do an activity together or simply talk. “Companionship often evolves into friendship as people get to know each other. It’s important that the relationship is rewarding for both parties.” Volunteers receive support through monthly meetings, and Jane and Mimi are always available by phone to assist. “It is a wonderful thing to play a significant, supportive role in another person’s life”. What Gives Mimi Hope? Helping others through attentive listening and focused presence is Mimi’s sweet spot, and it’s at the heart of what CT volunteers offer their matched members. For her, it’s the reciprocity of the Village that gives her hope. If this profile intrigued you to find joy through helping others, call the Village office at (510) 204-9200 or email Volunteer Manager Jessica Sterling at

Remember “It takes you out of yourself,” as Marty says, and “it’s really something worth doing.” Meet Volunteer Marty Ramey December 2025 Paying It Forward Marty joined Ashby Village to provide a service that was not available at her mother’s senior living facility 2,000 miles away: driving residents to where they needed and wanted to go. She decided to do this at least for someone else’s mom here and in 2017 became an Ashby Village volunteer, specializing in driving 90+ members. Instant gratification arose: ”If only more people knew how rewarding this work is. When we can help someone with mobility, we get a lot of intangible rewards.” Marty only allowed us to feature her here because she hopes that it will inspire others to find joy in this way. Soon, Marty took on additional responsibilities. For years, she called to welcome new members and explain “the ropes,” then followed up at regular intervals to check in and further assist as needed. Many good conversations came out of this, and even if the talks didn’t yield a new friendship every time, it was rewarding: “You hear about so many life paths.” Marty loves the connections this work builds. Outside of Ashby Village, she volunteers for a few food-related organizations, such as Mercy Brown Bag and Daily Bread, nourishing community in so many ways. Up Close and Personal This is Marty’s least favorite part, as she is a self-proclaimed “quiet introvert” with a sense of humor that may be under-appreciated. Colleagues say she may be quiet, but more importantly responsible, if not relentless. You know things get done when Marty signs on. She was born and raised in Shreveport, LA, traveled to Europe right after high school, and, when a job she thought she had been promised did not materialize upon her return, she quickly pivoted and found one at the French Consulate in Houston. There, she met her husband, who was working for Shell Oil. They moved to the Bay Area, and she followed her father’s footsteps in studying law. Berkeley has been their home ever since. Spurts in women’s rights, family law, tax law were unfulfilling, so she went back to school and became a French language teacher; she happily taught at Berkeley High until her retirement in 2015. Marty is the oldest of three: her brother lives in Shreveport, LA, and her sister in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her son and a daughter live in Colorado and Connecticut, respectively. When her daughter studied and lived in London, Marty and her husband visited her there and traveled to many other European destinations. They did not visit their son in faraway New Zealand, as he only lived there for a year. Close to home, and outside of Ashby Village jobs and joys, Marty finds pleasure in vegetable gardening, reading, and enjoying local theatre and Geographical Service Area - Ashby Village Skip to main content  Print This Page  Text Size  Scroll To Top Member Login My Shopping Cart Shopping Cart cancel Share This Page Share this page on Facebook Share this page on Linkedin Share this page on X/Twitter Menu NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER VOLUNTEER DONATE About Us About Ashby Village Staff, Board & Advisors Contact Us Visit Us Programs Direct Services & More Interest & Support Groups Neighborhood Groups Professional Providers Program Teams Join Become a Member Service Area Membership Fees This is Us: Meet a Member What Members Say How to Learn More Volunteer Become A Volunteer Volunteer Spotlight Support Us Donate Legacy Giving Calendar Home Service Area ASHBY VILLAGE GEOGRAPHICAL SERVICE AREA Ashby Village serves older adults who live in Albany, Berkeley , El Cerrito , Emeryville, Kensington, Richmond, and Oakland . Together with staff and Board members, we “villagers” are inspired by the neighborly practice of helping each other stay engaged and connected. Mutual care and reciprocity are at the heart of everything we do. What began as a grassroots effort 15 years ago has grown into a vibrant gathering of neighbors who come together to share support, friendship, and a strong sense of community. Since our founding in 2010, members and volunteers have co-created a caring community inspired by their interests, talents and needs. Social, educational, and cultural events; neighborhood group activities; support group meetings; and interest group gatherings keep us connected, supported, informed and entertained! Many events are offered free to the community — such as Arts & Culture and Health & Wellness presentations, and our lively monthly Social Hours — and villagers are encouraged to bring family, friends, and neighbors! Get to know some of the members and volunteers of our village! Meet a member through the This Is Us profile series, learn about What Inspires us, and celebrate the wonderful people who Volunteer their care, time and talents to enrich our community. A Bit of History After many discussions and community meetings that began in 2007, Ashby Village launched in 2010, connecting older adults in Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Kensington, and parts of Oakland. In December 2019, our community expanded to include neighbors in Richmond, and in July 2020, we welcomed our North Oakland Village friends as our villages merged. Ashby Village is part of the National Village Movement and Village Movement California (VMC). The Movement emerged as a natural answer to the question many older adults face: how can I remain in my home as I age? A Village is a membership organization that connects older adults to the community, programming, and expertise they need to continue living lives of purpose and promise. This innovative, community-based solution improves quality of life and expands choices at all stages of aging, empowering older adults to sustain independence and remain in charge of their lives.
