EXPLORE FURTHER
INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
The Montessori method features the spiral method of learning to stimulate critical thinking, foster curiosity, and broaden the mind. At Bowman, children learn in an experiential manner. Students explore using the senses to touch, feel, and see the work and then draw conclusions alongside a teacher. This promotes a deep and interdisciplinary focus on subject areas.

THE BOWMAN FRAMEWORK
LEARNING AT BOWMAN
Developmental Focus
The Montessori curriculum is characterized by developmental stages. Students are in multi-age classrooms based on these groupings, and each level targets the specific developmental needs of that stage. As the child grows, their capacity for abstraction increases – concepts are revisited at each stage with greater complexity. Everything is interconnected, and each lesson builds on and leads to others. Activities throughout the curriculum aim to inspire wonder, curiosity, appreciation, and finally, understanding.

We are indebted to this group for their vision, their spirit, and their unwavering dedication and hard work in the formative years of our school. Bowman's founders sought to: Create a unique educational model and non-profit school Provide a strong, individualized, self-directed, academic program for their children Expand the concept of community and citizenship to the global level, the “neighborhood” and “workplace” of their children’s future Integrate the use of state-of-the-art technology into the curriculum Contribute to educational choice and innovation in schooling Recognize and support the demanding work-life needs of today’s families Our Journey 1995 Children’s International School (CIS) opens its doors to 13 students from kindergarten through fourth grade, led by two teachers in a rented room at Cubberley Community Center. 1997 The school expands to include grades 6–8. 1998 Music and art is added to our program, the first of many enrichment subjects offered at Bowman. 2000 Our signature travel program begins! Our youngest students engage in service within their classroom community while Elementary Level students consider their larger communities. By Secondary, students are able to engage more deeply in service projects both on and off campus. ELEMENTARY LEVEL HIVE DAYS At Bowman, we believe that learning happens in a variety of settings not limited to the classroom. Hive Days provide an opportunity to engage in outside service or cultural activities without it counting as an absence. Students have used Hive Days to engage with family culture and elderly relatives as well as to volunteer with local organizations. SECONDARY LEVEL SERVICE HOURS Prior to receiving their diploma, 8th grade students are required to complete a total of 20 hours of service outside of Bowman’s campus. Students typically find volunteer opportunities related to their areas of interest – examples include service at horse ranches, dance studios, habitat restoration projects, local community gardens, and local sports leagues. Professional Involvement Bowman believes that the best staff members are committed, life-long learners. As such, we support and incentivize our staff to engage in Montessori training and a wide range of professional development opportunities. In addition to regular in-school professional development, staff members attend international, regional, and local workshops and conferences on Montessori and other fields related to their work. They are presenters at local and national conferences, active contributors to education-focused publications, and leaders in numerous Montessori organizations. From entertaining events that include parents and siblings to Head of School Roundtables that provide support on academic and social topics, Bowman is committed to helping families grow, learn, and succeed together. Below are a few examples of annual events for the whole family. Fall Festival At the beginning of each school year, Bowman hosts a casual gathering for families and teachers to meet and mingle. All-School Ice Skating In late winter, Bowman partners with a local ice rink for an evening of skating, pizza, hot cocoa, and good company. All-School Dance In early spring, a student-led committee works with our parent volunteer group to host a school dance for all ages. International Fair In early May, we celebrate the founding of the school by bringing the community together to explore and enjoy food, games, and crafts from various cultures following our three-year cycle of continent study. < > Getting Involved Bowman encourages parent participation while also recognizing the demanding daily schedules of many of its parents. Consequently, the school invites parents to share their talents in ways that fit best with their busy lives. There are many opportunities for involvement at Bowman, including: Giving classroom talks on an area of expertise Creating and running after-school clubs around specific interests Assisting the Athletic Director and faculty coach for a certain sports team Working with the Bowman Community Association (BCA) to serve as a liaison for other parents or to volunteer at community events Assisting the Head of School with a variety of activities and events, such as admissions tours, capital campaigns, and other marketing activities Sharing time and talents is a wonderful way parents can partner with the school. What People Are Saying On the Montessori Method at Bowman “We have looked on in wonder, respect, and appreciation as each of our children has grown and thrived at Bowman. Both of them, nurtured in their individual learning styles and exposed to rich experiences and opportunities, have excelled in core academics, as well as having built skills in multiple languages, a spectrum of unique interests beyond ‘the basics’, a deep respect for world cultures, and a sense of individual responsibility.” On Bowman’s Staff “Bowman staff members understand each child’s strengths and challenges. Their thoughtful, informed, and caring feedback helps me guide my son’s academic, social, and ethical development.” On Bowman’s Multicultural Community “Imagine our daughter arriving here from Japan, not speaking a word of English and visiting the school for the first time, quite nervously. As she stepped into the classroom, the Bowman students spontaneously formed a queue to greet her individually in Japanese! We literally saw her eyes sparkle. From that moment, our daughter felt part of the team. The students’ outstanding attitude at Bowman is a reflection of the school’s core values – the pursuit of both humanity and academic achievements.” On Individualized Learning “I’m particularly impressed with the entire administration and staff’s dedication to each individual’s success in life and learning. There is a deep commitment to finding what works best for each child. I know my child has benefited immeasurably from their approach.” On Critical Thinking “We were looking for a school that would challenge our son’s intellect and promote his love of learning. Bowman provided the rich learning environment we were looking for. By the time our son went to high school and college, he was a joyful, self-directed learner. He knew how to figure things out, how to do research, and how to communicate his ideas. He was able to complete two bachelor's degrees at Stanford, and is now in a doctoral program at U.C. Berkeley, and attributes much of his success to the skills he learned at Bowman.” In This Section Families Alumni Extracurriculars Beyond Bowman Bowman School (EAST) Main Office Elementary & Lower Secondary 4000 Terman Drive Palo Alto , CA 94306 Bowman School (WEST) Children's House & Enrichment 693 Arastradero Road Palo Alto , CA 94306 Facility License Number: 435700719 BOWMAN SCHOOL (PAGE MILL) Upper Secondary 835 Page Mill Road Palo Alto, CA 94304 BOWMAN SCHOOL (BAYSHORE) Children's House 3801 East Bayshore Road Palo Alto, CA 94303 Facility License Number: 435700792 Administration Phone: 650.813.9131 Email:

Children learn in mixed-age classrooms: Lower Elementary (Grades 1–3) and Upper Elementary (Grades 4–6). We start each year off with the Great Lessons, exploring the origins of the world, sparking imagination, and creating a framework through which students learn core academic subjects. In Lower Elementary, students begin to move beyond what and why to how. Working to move from concrete to abstract thought, this age seeks to make sense of facts and ideas they are encountering in the world. Children receive small group and individual lessons and learn to plan their daily schedule. Collaborative work allows children to learn to respect the ideas, thoughts, and opinions of others. In Upper Elementary, children continue to learn abstraction and there is an increased importance placed on morality, justice, and social interactions. This is honored by offering more collaborative projects, allowing for lessons in independence, cooperation, and peer relationships. In this level, we continue small group and one-on-one lessons, and students plan their daily schedule in one-week increments. Each year of this level includes Special Projects that allow children to further explore their own community and interests: Collections, MEA FAMILIA, and Integrated Passion Project. Elementary Level Curriculum Math Language Science Social Sciences Practical Life Math The mathematics curriculum introduces mathematics concepts, number theory, and computation through the use of Montessori materials. Hands-on learning makes abstract concepts clear and concrete. Materials proceed through several levels of abstraction until the student grasps them conceptually. The Great Lesson "The Story of Numbers" familiarizes students with the history of numbers, its importance and influence in the evolution of civilization, and its place as the foundation for the mathematical and geometrical systems used today. Language All aspects of language are integrated into all areas of the curriculum. In the lower elementary classroom, the focus is on reading fluency, writing, and oral expression. The Great Lesson "The Story of Language" familiarizes students with the history of symbolic language, its importance in the evolution of civilization, and its use as a means of communication. At the upper elementary level, the study of language builds on reading fluency and foundational writing skills and expands to the comprehension of texts. Written expression is a continued emphasis. Science Montessori’s Cosmic Education fuses the study of geological history, physical geography, and earth/natural sciences. Lessons satisfy the child’s need to understand relationships, cause/effect, associations, and morality while utilizing the imagination and sparking curiosity and interest. Based on hands-on inquiry, the focus is on scientific language and principles. Students spend more time focused on the details of the natural world as well as the processes and issues of science: the study of life, laws, and structure of the universe, and how humanity has struggled throughout history to put our understanding to practical use. Students explore science through lessons, demonstrations, experiences, experiments, and independent research. Social Sciences Bowman's curriculum fuses the study of geological history, physical geography, and earth/natural sciences. Lessons satisfy the child’s need to understand relationships, cause/effect, associations, and morality while utilizing the imagination and sparking curiosity and interest. The study of geography has two basic aims. The first is to help children develop a clear sense of spatial orientation, and the second is to become aware of and accepting of other cultures. Geography is introduced through oral lessons with tactile materials to allow repetition. In Montessori education, we begin with the big picture and gradually move to details like the names of rivers and mountains. The framework is based upon our relationship to the earth and how humans meet their basic needs under varying conditions. History is shared through stories based on the contributions of all of humanity. Students receive lessons on the concept and passage of time, as well as how it relates to the earth and the different cultures living on it. The children start with how the world began and cooled, the formation of the atmosphere and oceans, and the emergence of life. Lessons satisfy the child’s need to understand relationships, cause/effect, associations, and morality while utilizing the imagination and sparking curiosity and interest. Students are in an intellectual period for reason; they are concerned with the role of society, morality, and social interaction. They are still sensitive to the use of the imagination, but maturity results in more advanced thinking, research, and interest. Geography is tied to both the history and science curricula and serves as a bridge to the development of the child’s understanding and appreciation of the story of humankind and nature. Practical Life The purposeful work of practical life helps children develop and refine a strong and realistic sense of independence and self-reliance. Activities at this level focus on care of self, care of the environment and living things, cooperation, and continued practice of grace and courtesy. Activities become experiences and exposure that allow them to learn to navigate and respond effectively in life.

Children have the capability to learn quickly and almost effortlessly through activity; they are encouraged to be sensorial explorers, learning through the engagement of their senses. Our classrooms offer a wide variety of hands-on activities and materials designed to meet each child’s individual needs and periods of readiness. Children’s House students are free to work independently within a structured environment, doing real activities with an intelligent purpose. Children's House Programs Infant Program (12 weeks—18 Months) Toddler Program (18 Months—3 Years) Preschool & Kindergarten (3—6 Years) Infant Program (12 weeks—18 Months) Our Infant classroom is a calm, secure space designed to support your child’s earliest experiences with movement, language, and connection. Montessori-trained educators offer individualized attention and care, fostering trust, responsive communication, and early independence. The environment encourages safe exploration with materials and routines that support the development of gross motor skills, visual focus, and early language. Daily routines such as feeding, diapering, and napping are consistent and respectful, helping infants build a strong sense of order, security, and belonging. Toddler Program (18 Months—3 Years) As children become more mobile and curious, the Toddler classroom offers increasing opportunities for independence, movement, and purposeful activity. Through hands-on work and thoughtful guidance, toddlers develop concentration, coordination, language, and social-emotional skills. Freedom within limits allows them to make choices and practice independence in dressing, toileting, and caring for their environment. Montessori materials are designed to match their developmental needs and natural desire to “do it myself,” nurturing confidence and joy in learning. Family partnership is essential during these foundational years, and we support parents through communication, education, and opportunities for connection. Preschool & Kindergarten (3—6 Years) Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten students work and learn together. Children receive small group and one-on-one lessons in core subjects. Each student reads one-on-one with a teacher each day for at least 15 minutes. Children plan out their day to begin practicing time management. Special attention is paid to the natural world with observation and care of plants and animals, outdoor play and exploration, and opportunities for gardening. Children's House Curriculum Math Language Science Social Sciences Practical Life Math Math is logic, sequence, and order. The young child’s mind is innately mathematical. Development drives the young child to absorb, manipulate, classify, order, sequence, abstract, and repeat. Montessori materials take advantage of these tendencies by presenting discrete concepts, proceeding from the sensorial and concrete to the abstract, and using precise lessons that offer keys to exploration and planning for repetition. A hands-on emphasis dominates the entire Children’s House sequence, and the passage to abstraction (math work without the use of materials) is considered developmental and proceeds individually for each child. Preceding lessons and work in practical life and sensorial provide direct preparation for work in mathematics. Language Complex spoken language is a human capability. The mental capacity for creating language is unique; it allows the child to speak the language of their culture correctly. The sensitive period for language development is from birth to six years of age, and in this period, the child absorbs and learns language with very little effort. Therefore, in the Children’s House, the initial focus of language is on spoken language and vocabulary enrichment. Phonological study leads to writing, reading, and the function of words. Science Young children are intensely interested in the natural world. They ask questions constantly in order to build a framework to classify the world that surrounds them. The science curriculum at this age takes advantage of the young child’s natural curiosity. It offers concrete exploration that helps build vocabulary and understanding of physical and life sciences. Social Sciences The goal of the geography curriculum at this level is to introduce geographical concepts through a concrete sensorial approach. We first give the big picture (land, air, and water) and gradually move to details like the names of continents, oceans, or states. An awareness of the physical features of the earth is built through concrete exploration of land/water formations and maps. The study of culture is integrated with Practical Life and strives to provide children with multi-sensory impressions of the people, lands, and cultures of other nations. Practical Life At Bowman, children learn to independently care for themselves and their environment through the exercises of practical life. These activities provide opportunities for the development of concentration, fine and gross muscle coordination, a sense order including an orderly work cycle, independence, and attention to detail. The exercises of practical life support the child's natural development of executive function skills. Thus, the activities of practical life lay the foundation for all other future academic work. Practical life is the starting point for the youngest members of the class. Children continually develop and refine the skills of practical life throughout their time in Children’s House. Salve! Welcome to our school! Bowman is a community of children, parents, faculty, administrators, board members, and friends working together to create an environment that promotes a love of learning, as well as working to educate the whole child and, in doing so, creating lifelong learners. The Bowman program is an impressive example of the principles of Montessori education at work for your child. At Bowman, self-directed and individualized learning forms the core of the educational experience. Based on years of educational research, we believe that children can and must learn to accept responsibility, develop independence, and make decisions that help manage their own learning. Working individually with their teachers, all Bowman students help plan their daily and weekly goals. They supplement their core academics with materials and topics of their own interest. They also participate in evaluating and communicating their own educational progress. Because each child brings a unique mix of strengths and weaknesses, children often progress at different rates in different areas. To support and respect each individual’s development, the children at Bowman who can move faster in a subject area move ahead freely and are not held to the pace of slower students or the limitations of a grade-structured curriculum. Children who need more time and attention on a subject are provided the resources they need to succeed. Through their years at Bowman, our students acquire strong academic skills, yet also: Maintain their love for learning, creativity, and discovery Develop a sense of responsibility and confidence about themselves and the world Build a strong foundation for lifelong decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking Become well-rounded and socially adept individuals Bowman School is so fortunate to share this journey with your family! Below are a few examples of what Annual Fund gifts have gone towards. The playground provides a place for elementary-aged students to explore and play during freeplay. Field trips allow our students to learn and explore outside of the classroom. School vans provide transport as students go to and from field trips and sporting events. Kitchen carts allow students to cook and bake right outside their classroom, an important aspect of practical life. Technology upgrades help our older students access information, complete assignments, and learn valuable skills. < > Bowman Learning Village (West Campus): In 2019, Bowman families, staff, alumni, and friends contributed an astounding $3 million towards the "Discover. Create. Become." Capital Campaign. The Bowman Community has been deeply invested in our mission and values throughout the history of our school, and we are honored by their generosity and commitment. The Learning Village enhances Bowman's campus and program in several key ways: The IDEALab provides students with a dedicated space for STEAM and enrichment activities, including a science and media lab, woodshop, and maker center. The Children’s House includes three- and four-year-olds in two multi-age classrooms with specially designed indoor and outdoor environments to set a foundation for future Bowman learners. The Multi-Purpose Gymnasium allows for hosting school-wide activities, on-site sports practices, and community events. The Stage expands our commitment to the performing arts as a means to stimulate students’ creativity, self-expression, and confidence. Outdoor Learning Environments offer open-ended interactions, exploration, discovery, and connection with nature through our science gardens, greenhouse, sunken learning circle, patios, walkways, and terraces. Students feel a greater sensitivity to their surroundings, so activities begin to take the children outside of the classroom. At Bowman, children learn in an experiential manner. Students explore using the senses to touch, feel, and see the work and then draw conclusions alongside a teacher. This promotes a deep and interdisciplinary focus on subject areas. Expand Global Perspective Our study of the world is multidisciplinary. Histories, cultures, languages, geography, and cooking projects are focused on the continents of study for the year. As students age, they dive deeper into their global studies and focus on developmentally appropriate ideas to build in a rich understanding and appreciation for other countries and cultures, and fosters true global citizenship. Expand Responsible Citizenship Bowman students are defined by their kindness and respect for others. These skills are worked on in all areas of our development. Our classroom and community jobs build a sense of purpose and respect. Expand Learning at Bowman Developmental Focus Learning at Bowman Developmental Focus The Montessori curriculum is characterized by developmental stages. Lessons begin to be more abstract and aim to make sense of facts and ideas that students are encountering in the world. Social interactions are very important, and we honor this by allowing more collaborative group projects. Our program continues to feature small group and one-on-one lessons, and children plan their own schedules for multiple days at a time. LEARN MORE ELEMENTARY PROGRAM Secondary (12–18) Adolescents aged 12-18 are beginning to form a profound ideology of the self. Your child will be at the center of their education and through embracing Montessori principles in all aspects of our community, your child will discover their passions, create innovative solutions, and become a compassionate leader. We embrace the challenge of equipping the next generation through an individualized, integrated, hands-on approach based on proven Montessori methods of learning and development. Bowman students practice resilience and confident problem solving in all of their endeavors. Lessons at Bowman have an interdisciplinary focus. The integrated approach addresses the need for strong academics as well as the demand for creativity and flexibility in order to succeed in our rapidly changing world. Bowman teaches all subjects to encourage true learning and understanding rather than just memorizing facts specific to tests. Thus, the humanities, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), and enrichment subjects allow for critical thinking, student inquiry, and real-world problem solving. Whole School Curriculum The Montessori curriculum is characterized by developmental stages. Math Language Science Social Sciences Practical Life Math Montessori materials allow students to explore arithmetic and geometry while gaining a concrete understanding of mathematical concepts. With repeated use of the materials, students move toward abstraction and mental math, including more abstract concepts in geometry and algebra. Lessons and activities are individualized, allowing each child to learn at their own pace. Language Reading and writing are fundamental skills, and we have created a well-rounded program for language arts exploration. Each academic level includes developmentally-appropriate areas of language instruction such as handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, creative writing, speaking skills, and analysis. Science Botany, zoology, and other sciences are a major focus of the Children’s House and Elementary levels. Secondary level students follow a two-year cycle, alternately emphasizing life sciences and physical sciences for deeper exploration. They also begin to incorporate design thinking into their projects. Social Sciences World history and global studies aren’t just classes. They impact every aspect of our multidisciplinary teaching under our three-year cycle of continent study: (1) Asia and Africa, (2) Europe and Oceania, and (3) North and South America. The World Language curriculum includes Mandarin, Spanish, and Latin. Practical Life Real-world activities foster children's coordination, independence, and confidence. The practical life curriculum covers care of self, care of environment, grace and courtesy, and culinary and fiber arts. Our secondary level adds seminars and preparation for life beyond Bowman. Coursework includes cooking, woodwork, and gardening. The whole Child SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING Bowman’s two simple school rules are taught from day one – respect others and respect things. The concept of respect is integral to mediation, conflict resolution, and our peaceful classrooms. We see our classrooms as interconnected communities of learners, and social growth is the natural product of a community-centered approach. Children are supported in the development of caring, helpful, and empathetic relationships in natural, real situations in their classroom community as well as the larger school community. WELLNESS At Bowman, we believe that good health and academic success go hand in hand. Healthy children make better students, and better students become healthy, successful adults who are productive members of their communities. Helping children learn healthy habits from an early age supports all aspects of development. In our classrooms, wellness is an interconnected part of the daily life of the community, including personal wellness, physical wellness, social and emotional wellness, and community wellness. LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Bowman provides leadership opportunities for children at all levels. For the youngest students, this looks like classroom responsibilities and peer teaching. As children grow, they are able to to serve as classroom reporters, meeting chairs, and have school-wide responsibilities through community jobs. Older students become peer mediators and practice sharing expertise. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Service learning supports students in building a sense of community and developing tools for meaningful civic engagement. Our youngest students engage in service within their classroom community while Elementary Level students consider their larger communities. By Secondary, students are able to engage more deeply in service projects both on and off campus. Enrichment classes have a well-developed curriculum and are taught by a combination of Montessori-trained teachers and professionals in the field. In Children’s House, most enrichment subjects are embedded within the classroom activities, and lessons are given by the teachers. From Lower Elementary to Secondary, enrichment subjects are taught out of the classroom, where classes will get full-immersion into the subject. Each of these programs expose our students to new opportunities for learning and further develop their understanding of self and their place within the greater community. Enrichment Classes Art Music World Language Physical Education Cultural Studies Library & Media Mindfulness Technology & Programming Woodshop & Design Art Bowman endeavors to instill and cultivate an appreciation for art in each student in all levels (Children's House, Elementary, and Secondary). Art teachers use a variety of mediums, materials, and techniques to keep students engaged in formal lessons and other creative opportunities. Students explore a wide variety of artists and their work. Music Our music program aims to instill an appreciation and understanding of music in students in all school levels. The musical experience is connected with movement, dance, and song. Students explore the historical background of musical genres and composers. We teach children how to read music, play an instrument, and perform in an ensemble. World Language Language study is a means of developing an appreciation for the people of other cultures in our community and around the world. Students in all levels learn Spanish and Mandarin through a variety of means including songs, games, books, conversations, and cooking projects. We first focus on exposure before adding emphasis on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Physical Education Our PE program for Elementary and Secondary aims for students to become physically literate individuals – that is, they have the ability to move with competence and confidence in a variety of physical activities and environments to benefit the healthy development of the whole self. This includes coordination, movement, fitness, and sports. Cultural Studies Elementary students are exposed to a variety of interconnected disciplines including anthropology, zoology, geology, botany, geography, and history. When studying a specific country, students research its people, food, vegetation, animals, and history. We emphasize the natural order of nature and respect for one another and the environment. Library & Media Library and Media classes offer opportunities to solve problems using primary sources and resources. The primary goals are to expand students' understanding of literature and the ability to use libraries as resources. Secondary level students also explore technology, media, and visual literacy. Mindfulness Our Elementary SEL (social and emotional learning) classes teach students tools to build emotional intelligence and resolve conflicts. They also explore storytelling and use their wondrous imaginations to create original characters and stories with rich detail. Technology & Programming Our Elementary and Secondary technology curriculum works to prepare students for a tech-filled world while remaining true to the Montessori tenets of hands-on learning and developmental appropriateness. Students begin by exploring basic computational thought and programming concepts without using devices. In later years, devices are slowly introduced along with lessons on keyboarding, computer parts and care, and the personal discipline to use technology responsibly. Woodshop & Design At Bowman, we recognize that nothing can match the sense of accomplishment that comes from planning and making something by hand. Students in Elementary are exposed to a variety of hand tools that develop their understanding of how raw materials are used to create everything around us. In Secondary, Design challenges expose them to new skills and support the practices of research, product analysis, and detailed documentation. Montessori promotes mindfulness Courtesy of Jack Esten/Popperfoto/Getty Images (1951) Whoever touches the life of the child touches the most sensitive point of a whole which has roots in the most distant past and climbs toward the infinite future. Maria Montessori Montessori At Bowman Bowman teachers develop a personal understanding of each student’s unique learning needs. Our teachers act as a resource by guiding students in small, multi-age classrooms for two to three sequential years. Sensitive to individual needs, our teachers carefully prepare the environment to meet those needs, giving students a sense of agency. Bowman teachers are advocates for empowerment and excel at helping children become actively engaged in ways that lead them to discoveries, drawing their own conclusions, and following their own developmental paths. Over 75% of our teachers have advanced degrees, and over 75% of all teaching staff (including 85% of classroom staff and 100% of lead teachers) have Montessori credentials. All teachers participate in annual professional development opportunities from international, national, and local Montessori organizations.
