A Brentwood education goes well beyond academic achievement. We guide our students to grow in integrity, self-understanding, resilience, and leadership. The school defines and communicates its Core Values, which permeate daily life and help build character. One example is our Lower School composting program, led by our 1st graders to keep food out of our landfills and provide nutrient-rich soil for use on the West Campus. The goal of our program is to provide every child with the chance to play. Playing times are rotated equally to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop their talents, regardless of their initial level of skill development. In addition to regularly scheduled games with teams from the Coastal Canyon League and other schools, the league hosts an annual Track and Field meet for all 4th and 5th grade students who wish to participate. Fall Winter Spring Fall Co-Ed Flag Football —Eight v. Eight Flag Football is offered to boys and girls who wish to play during the Fall Season. Girls Basketball —Teams are fielded in both Girls and Boys Basketball. Girls Basketball takes place in during the Fall Season. Winter Boys Basketball —Teams are fielded in both Girls and Boys Basketball. Boys Basketball takes place during the Winter Season. Girls Volleyball —Teams are fielded in both Girls and Boys Volleyball. Girls Volleyball is played during the Winter Season. Spring Boys Volleyball —Teams are fielded in both Girls and Boys Volleyball. Boys Volleyball is offered during our Spring Season. Co-Ed Soccer —Soccer home games are played Eight v. Eight. By connecting the notes to words and movement through rhythm, music lessons are a whole body experience, inspiring creativity and innovation. Throughout their six years in the Lower School, students will study both classical and contemporary composers, bringing their work to life through song and dance. Each year, students grow in their experience with unpitched percussion instruments, xylophones, and the recorder and begin to accompany their own performances as early as Kindergarten. These experiences teach concepts such as rhythm, melody, harmony, style, and expression and integrate with the thematic learning at each grade level. Moving forward. Our 30-Year Education Master Plan was approved by the City of Los Angeles in conjunction with a new Conditional Use Permit in 2017. This plan set a course for our future. It’s ambitious and innovative, and best of all, the first phase is already complete. But big dreams like these manifest only when determination, faith and enthusiasm come together. The Brentwood School community tackled the monumental task of launching and funding an unprecedented capital campaign, Brentwood, even better, to make the first phase of our plan a reality. The first phase of our Educational Master Plan included a new 70,000-square-foot Middle School building to house grades 6-8 and a building on our Lower School campus for kindergarten, 5th grade, and specialty electives. This phase also included refurbishing and updates on the East Campus for the use of our growing Upper School, the Belldegrun Center for Innovative Leadership, and the Multicultural Center. In addition, our plan improved the transportation, queuing, and arrival sequence for families. It also allowed for our first enrollment increase in 23 years, an addition of 265 students over four years, which included relocating our 6th grade and small increases in grades 7-12, while also maintaining a hard cap on peak hour vehicle trips. Guidelines Brentwood School adheres to the following guidelines, which are designed to promote the most equitable and consistent allocation of available funds. Family Responsibility The primary responsibility for financing a student’s independent school education rests with his/her family. Non-Working Parent/Guardian The school expects both parents/guardians to contribute to tuition. If a parent/guardian makes the decision not to work, the school imputes an annual income for a non-working parent/guardian after the youngest child in the family reaches Kindergarten age. The imputed income will be based on the perceived earning potential of the non-working parent/guardian. Divorce or Separation In the case of a divorce or separation, the school requires each parent/guardian to file an application and submit all related materials. The school is not bound by any divorce agreement specifying a parent’s/guardian’s responsibility for educational expenses. It would be unfair for the school to subsidize a child’s education if one of the parents/guardians is capable, but unwilling, to contribute to their child’s tuition. Step-Parents The financial and other applicable information of a step-parent should be included on the application of the applicable parent/guardian. Consideration of Assets and Expenses In addition to income, the school takes the following into account when calculating a family’s ability to pay Brentwood School tuition: Home equity Family trusts Student’s assets Liquid assets Other assets Tuition for children in other K-12 schools Payments to pensions and retirement plans Discretionary spending Families who are denied financial support, or who receive an award which they question, may make their concerns known in writing to the Chair of the Financial Support Committee, within two weeks of receipt of the award. The Financial Support Committee will review the appeal and the Chair of the Financial Support Committee will inform the family of their decision. If necessary, the family may be invited to or request a meeting to better explain the situation. Our college counseling athletics liaison meets regularly with student athletes and their parents to answer questions and walk them through the recruiting process. It must support them as they navigate the complex waters of childhood and adolescence. Our students benefit from an extensive support network. School counselors, learning specialists, advisors, and peer mentors help them traverse challenges both in and out of the classroom and guide them to make decisions about their future. We even have trained therapy dogs in both the Middle and Upper Schools — adorable companions that provide both care and joy. Brentwood helps its students find the equilibrium that will allow them to thrive academically, artistically, athletically, and socially, and to anticipate their future with a sense of confidence. Lower School Middle School Upper School Lower School We devote care and attention to every Lower School student’s academic, physical, emotional, and social development through a team of professionals who work closely with classroom teachers to support student needs. Learning Specialist Our Learning Specialist serves as a resource to teachers and a liaison to a network of professionals outside of the school, including educational therapists, speech and language pathologists, and occupational therapists. Health Our Lower School nurses provide day-to-day health services to the Lower School student body. In coordination with our Director of Public Safety, the nurses also plan, coordinate, and implement the Lower School safety and disaster preparedness programs. Counseling Services Our Lower School counselor coordinates the Community of Caring program to promote and integrate the school's seven core values of trust, respect, responsibility, honesty, caring, diversity, and community into the daily life of the Lower School community. Ms. Taylor also serves as a resource to students, parents, and faculty, helping work through specific student issues and/or developmental concerns. Middle School Advisory The Middle School Advisory program allows students to develop connections with faculty members who are available to support students throughout their Middle School experience. The faculty advisor helps students integrate into the Brentwood School community both academically and socially, monitoring academic success and steering students toward academic support when necessary. In the Lower School, students meet weekly in small groups to explore topics such as Brentwood School's Core Values, sportsmanship, and conflict resolution. Carefully planned advisory programs in Middle and Upper School pair students with faculty mentors, and weekly gatherings create a forum to reflect on questions of ethics, friendship, and more. National School of Character Our Lower School has earned the distinction of National School of Character since 2011. Students meet weekly for Community of Caring time where they discuss conflict resolution, problem-solving, sportsmanship, our Core Values, and our Honor Code. These weekly discussions provide children with a forum where they can ask questions, present concerns, and model open and effective communication. Sign up for the VCRE Newsletter VCRE Resources for Service Providers The Need for Housing Those who have served our country deserve housing, and Brentwood School’s extensive services to Veterans support the plans to build a thriving community for Veterans on the West LA VA campus. Through recreational, educational, and social activities, as well as transportation services, the school helps make the difference between housing and a home. Veterans appreciate the open-air fitness facility, and its caring trainers, in a peaceful, green environment. And Brentwood School’s job preparation classes have led to employment — and hope — for Vets. To complete Veterans' new homes, we have supplied move-in kits with kitchen, bathroom, and living room essentials for the more than 275 units now open on the VA campus (buildings 205, 207, 208, 209, and 671 MacArthur Avenue). The school routinely exceeds its lease obligations; for example, Brentwood School prepares and delivers more than 21,000 meals each year to homeless Veterans, using the resources offered through HUD/VASH, the VA Welcome Center, and Safe Parking. We also donated $200,000 to help fund individual shelters at Care, Treatment, and Rehabilitative Services (CTRS), a West LA VA program that helps Veterans transition from unhoused to housed. Brentwood School leases land on the West LA VA campus for athletic facilities, and students are permitted on the Veteran land only during specific hours. All of Brentwood School's non-athletic facilities (including academic buildings) are on land owned by the school, purchased from Urban Military Academy in 1972. 1996 in conjunction with Brentwood School's 25th Anniversary. The series presents speakers each year, providing unique opportunities for Brentwood School students, parents, faculty, alumni, and community members to engage with highly notable, world-renowned authorities in literature, journalism, science, the arts, history, philosophy, and politics. Arts Middle School performing arts courses expose students to new opportunities and also take their skill to the next level. Students in 7th and 8th grade choose at least two semesters of the arts, one visual and one performing, and at least one oratory course. Advanced, audition-based ensembles in theater, music, and dance, as well as after-school musicals allow students to grow in skill and responsibility. 6th Grade Program All 6th graders take Music 101, a yearlong course designed to give students the opportunity to grow their cognitive abilities through learning an ensemble instrument — either the violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, or trumpet. This student-centered environment allows both beginners and experienced players to thrive. Classes rotate between music theory exercises and instrument lessons culminating in an end-of-year performance.
