Every student also has an advisor—who gets to know the small group of peers in the advisory very well, becoming a trusted adult to celebrate achievements with and seek guidance from when challenges arise. Grade-Level and Class Deans At some schools, grade-level deans work with the same age group every year. In this model, the 6th grade dean is always the same person and that person works with a new group of 6th grade students each year. At other schools, class deans move up as their students do, so the Dean for the Class of 2030 would remain with those students from one year to the next. At Castilleja, we see the benefits of both models, so we use both. In 6th through 9th grades, there are grade-level deans who specialize in everything from developmental milestones to important study skills to joyful community traditions associated with that grade and stage in life. Then in 10th through 12th grades, the class deans travel with their students, getting to know the grade as a community and the individuals within that group extremely well, gaining a deeper understanding of them as they become more independent and rise into leadership roles. This flexible approach is a perfect example of the adults at Castilleja modeling the Learning and Leading Competencies—including Agility, Collaboration, and Valuing Multiple Narratives. The Role of a Dean 6TH GRADE DEAN MARCELLA RAMIREZ As a grade-level dean, I plan engaging and growth-oriented activities for advisories on Mindset Monday, Task Tuesday, and Thoughtful Thursday. I also keep students informed about schedule shifts and work with the 7th grade team of teachers to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. Being a grade-level dean allows me to make sure students are organized and not worried about the minutia, so they can focus on the important work growing into themselves. It also allows me to support my grade-level colleagues in their work with students. CLASS OF 2027 DEAN JEFF MAYFIELD As a class dean, I strive to be seen as an approachable adult, student advocate, behind-the-scenes coordinator, and faithful fan of extracurricular endeavors. I like being a dean because it allows me to engage with more students and support them in various ways, whether academic, socio-emotional, or extracurricular. Furthermore, being a grade-level dean presents many opportunities for me to work with other community members in meaningful ways. Advisors In the Middle School, students meet in advisory groups daily. Some days they might play lighthearted games and other days they might be asked to step outside their comfort zones by taking on a leadership role or exploring complex issues of the day together. No matter what, this daily practice of coming together is extremely grounding, helping students to feel known and gain confidence at the same time. In the Upper School, students meet in advisory groups on a rotating schedule during community time. Like in Middle School, some of that time is spent in relaxed conversations, allowing bonds to grow and students to feel more at ease with each other and their advisor. At other times, they explore more complex questions related to current events or global issues. Upper School advisors also help students navigate the academic and extra-curricular landscape, supporting them as they select their classes and make choices about after school, leadership, and other opportunities. In both divisions, these groups are built carefully, trying to make sure that students have people they can count on as friends and people they can build new relationships with over the course of the year. The Role of an Advisor 6TH GRADE ADVISOR EVELYNE NICOLAOU At first, we help the girls connect with each other, navigate a new school, and feel a sense of belonging. The girls are very busy, and advisory gives them time to think, hear from each other, and realize that they have the same concerns or dreams. We talk about their expectations of themselves, what success means to them, and how their attitude can impact their experiences. Some of the girls are very serious in class, and during advisory I discover other aspects of their personalities and see how creative they are. Being an advisor also influences my choices as a teacher—during advisory they might share concerns that they would not mention in class, and as a result sometimes adapt what I do in the classroom. Advisory allows me to get to know the whole child. 9TH GRADE ADVISOR CHRISTY STORY Advisory is where connection happens. I love being part of a student's journey to build resilience, practice compassion, take risks, and stretch beyond their comfort zones—all while creating a safe space for laughter, growth, and authentic relationships. Through shared experiences like retreats, campus-outings, and playful games in advisory, 9th graders grow socially, emotionally, and academically throughout their first year in high school while building friendships outside their usual social circles. Being an advisor means getting to know students in a completely different way, acting as a trusted adult mentor, connecting students to resources, and helping them determine what they need to thrive. 1310 Bryant Street, Palo Alto, CA 94301 (650) 328-3160 Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) LinkedIn (opens in new window/tab) Become a Student (opens in new window/tab) Careers Contact Us Media Inquiries Privacy Policy Powered by Finalsite Search Results - Castilleja Close Menu Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search About Admission Learning & Leading Athletics Arts Alumnae Giving at Castilleja Employee Directory My Portal Search Skip to Main Content Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search Menu Home Employee Directory My Portal Search About Head of School Welcome Mission and Values In the Company of Girls Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging School Leadership Campus Modernization Project Our News Careers (opens in new window/tab) Neighborhood News Getting Here Student Experience Our Traditions Conduct and Safety Admission Welcome Request Admission Information Applying to Castilleja Discover Castilleja Visit Castilleja Tuition & Affordability Frequently Asked Questions Transportation Options Information for Families Relocating to the Bay Area Learning & Leading Our Program Our Departments Learning to Lead Teaching and Learning Antiracism Experiential Learning Student Wellness Learning Support College Counseling Portrait of an Alum Deans and Advisors Athletics Welcome Schedules Sports Performance Alumni Athletes Teams Coaching Staff Arts Welcome Visual Art Theatre Dance Music Alumnae Giving at Castilleja Giving at Castilleja View360 Make a Gift Make a Pledge Tuition Assistance Ways to Give Meet the Team Search Results In This Section Search Results Search Results × 1310 Bryant Street, Palo Alto, CA 94301 (650) 328-3160 Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram (opens in new window/tab) LinkedIn (opens in new window/tab) Become a Student (opens in new window/tab) Careers Contact Us Media Inquiries Privacy Policy Powered by Finalsite Make a Pledge - Castilleja Skip to Main Content Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search Menu Home Employee Directory My Portal Search Giving at Castilleja View360 Make a Gift Make a Pledge Tuition Assistance Ways to Give Meet the Team Giving at Castilleja / Make a Pledge In This Section Giving at Castilleja View360 Make a Gift Make a Pledge Tuition Assistance Ways to Give Meet the Team Make a Pledge This form requires Javascript to be enabled for submission and authorization. * Required At Castilleja, we believe the world needs more women leaders. We encourage students to explore, to further develop their interests, define their talents, and deepen their values. The Castilleja college counselors seek to empower students to direct their own college searches. Our program is a natural extension of Castilleja’s educational philosophy, emphasizing independent thinking, introspection, personal responsibility, leadership, and informed decision-making. Our college counselors give students the tools to reach their own decisions about college– by providing information, advice, reflection, and resources throughout the process to both students and their parents/guardians. Our mission is not about placing students in particular colleges – it’s about educating students to seek excellence and balance in all that they do and to engage fully in the world. Instead, we want our community to become a place where people feel they can be themselves even when that does not conform to the prescribed "Casti way.” Commitment is measured by time, resources, and processes that inspire curiosity and demand accountability. To that end, we commit to continuing to: Reviewing and expanding our antiracist curriculum for all students across all disciplines, while enhancing our social justice and integrated leadership programming Bringing a greater number of racially “Ethnically or in all areas of identity” diverse voices and experiences to campus to highlight their contributions to society and their impact on local, national, and global platforms Ensuring Student Affinity Groups have protected time in the weekly programming schedule to meet during the school day Haga clic aquí para recursos antiracistas en español. It doesn’t stop there! The annual Middle School musical is practically a rite of passage at Castilleja, with the vast majority of students participating at some point between 6th and 8th grade. The Upper School mounts both a play and a musical each year, as well as student-produced one-acts performance. The shows are chosen by the student-run advisory board, which gives students a powerful sense of agency. Upper School students have multiple courses to choose from, ranging from acting to directing and encouraging them to find their creative voice. Scenes from the Middle School and Upper School Musicals Learn About Our Course Offerings: Middle School Courses Upper School Courses Middle School Courses Theatre 6: Telling Stories Theatre for the sixth grade is an introduction to storytelling, movement, voice, mime and character development. Students are encouraged to take risks, expand their comfort zone and rediscover their ability to play. Using improvisational techniques, the girls will explore characters, relationships, and objectives to create believable scenes and short plays. Theatre 7: Creating Characters Required for one semester of all seventh graders, Theatre 7 explores movement, voice and characterization through games, activities and scene work. Students will explore the world of Commedia dell’Arte and modern acting styles, and will learn to command the stage and embody characters vocally and physically. Film 8 This eighth grade course offers students the opportunity to learn how to create films. Through a series of hands-on projects, we learn the basic components of film, including cinematography, editing, storyboarding, screenwriting, and directing. In addition, students will be exposed to classic movies and the artists who created them. The class will culminate in the creation of multiple short films, written, directed, edited and performed entirely by the students. Theater 8: Acting Students in this class will build on the performance skills of 6th and 7th grade, delving deeper into acting skills and techniques. We will read a series of plays, analyze them in the context of historical and social significance, rehearse, and perform scenes. Students will be exposed to a variety of acting techniques, including Meisner, Viewpoints, and Stanislavsky through a series of units in Characterization, Objectives/Actions, and Motivation. Theatre 8: Production Theatre 8 covers every aspect of theatre, with units on playwriting, directing, set design, costume design, lighting, stage management, and publicity. Students will receive hands-on, practical training as well as guest lectures by professionals in the theatre world. The course culminates in the creation and performance of a one-act play directed, designed, and acted by the class. Upper School Courses Theatre I A course for students curious about acting and theatre (as well as those who have studied it before), Theatre I is designed to develop the ability to play dramatic action honestly and believably, using realistic, naturalistic, and expressionistic material as well as self-scripted autobiographical writing. Course work includes exercises and improvisations exploring awareness, relaxation, observation, the senses, and emotional life, while gaining greater physical and vocal agility as they study (and perform from) a variety of play texts. A diverse set of acting techniques and approaches to finding believability, spontaneity, and repeatability will be explored throughout the semester as the framework for building technique. The objective is for students to deepen their creativity, experience greater freedom of expression, and gain confidence in trusting their unique voice and perspective on stage and off. No previous theatre experience is necessary; students may enroll in this course in the fall semester only. Theatre II Theatre II is a continuation of the fundamental work covered in Theatre I in an advanced context. Over the course of the semester, students will encounter plays that present unique challenges for actors in terms of heightened language, physicality, characterization, style, content and text analysis. Students will engage in more intensive preparation of their craft and, through ongoing exercises and scene study, will continue to deepen their experience and understanding of the physical, vocal, emotional, and mental aspects of performance. As a culmination of their work, students will participate as actors in the Spring student-directed One Acts. Prerequisite: Theatre I; students who enroll in Theatre II during the first semester will focus on deepening and expanding their skills within the Theatre I curriculum. Theatre Honors: Fundamentals of Directing Fundamentals of Directing is an introductory course in directing for the stage. It is designed for students interested in pursuing Acting or Directing and focuses on the role and function of the Director in contemporary theatre. This process-oriented course focuses on scene study and staging, including composition, picturization, movement, gesture, and guiding actors to make strong, actionable choices on stage. Directors will learn to communicate effectively with actors while bringing their unique point of view to the work as they learn how to develop a Director’s Vision. Actors will have the opportunity to perform in multiple scenes with different Directors, gaining an appreciation for the relationship between Directors and Actors in the rehearsal process, as well as for the different working styles of Directors. Prerequisite: successful completion of Theatre II. Students may enroll in this course in the fall semester only. Theatre Honors: Directing & Production Directing and Production is designed for students interested in pursuing Acting or Directing, as well as gaining more experience creating theatre. Grounded in research and informed by experience, our leadership development program is woven into daily life around and beyond the Circle. As our students grow as leaders, we help them think about two important concepts: exercising choice and building capacity. Exercising choice fills students with a sense of agency, allowing them to take active roles in reaching their goals and exploring new ideas. Building capacity involves developing and reflecting on specific leadership skills and competencies. In addition to these themes, our pedagogical principles and enrichment experiences ensure that every student graduates from Castilleja with an appreciation of her own personal leadership style. Initiative, Agility, and Purpose In Middle School, learning to lead begins with understanding the importance of initiative, agility, and purpose. Students define these terms in relation to leadership and explore how they use these qualities both to lead and to collaborate effectively. Middle School students grow as leaders through: Theme-based Global Week exploration that extends learning beyond the classroom and provides students with a range of ways to express their points-of-view. Electives that allow students to delve more deeply into an area of interest and develop a flexible approach to problem-solving and teamwork. Upper School students grow as leaders through: Grade-level, student-driven programming and outreach, including Global Investigators and Leadership Lab . ACE Organization participation in clubs that tackle local and global issues and offer leadership roles in junior and senior year. Annual events and workshops such as Global Week and Beyond the Circle, programs that are designed to expose students to new ideas, innovations, and professions. Meaningful Action Our core leadership competencies are best practiced through experiences that the students find personally compelling, so we design opportunities for each student to learn within a context that is meaningful for her. Suzanne and Eric O'Brien P'21 (Alum Parents) After attending a co-ed middle school, our daughter quickly recognized the unique benefits of the Castilleja mission when she entered as a 9th grader. Watching her grow as a leader alongside her inspiring classmates affirmed our support for the capital campaign to reimagine the campus. We're excited to see the next generation of leaders thrive on their new campus. Stephanie and Sherwin Chen P’26 (Current Parents) Supporting this campaign extends beyond our gratitude for what Castilleja has meant to our family—we view Open Their World as an opportunity to support women's education and the future of women's leadership. Our daughter's experience at Castilleja has been truly transformative. We've watched our shy, hesitant girl become a leader in a way uniquely authentic to her. She's grown into a confident and thoughtful speaker and someone who is eager to engage with everything around her. As we imagined the generations of future students graduating from Castilleja, each with the experience that our daughter has had, each ready to make a difference in the world in whatever they choose to do – of course we wanted to be a part of that. Andie Sobrato '08 (Alum) What inspired me to support this campaign was my desire to give back to the institution that gave me so much. During my seven years at Casti I had the opportunity to learn from engaging teachers, participate in sports that taught me about teamwork and listen to amazing speakers from around the world. When I reflect about my value system, I know I undoubtedly got so many of them from Castilleja. In addition to the values, I found life-long friends that are supportive, fiercely driven in their pursuits and incredible citizens of the world. As an alum who received financial aid during my time, I feel it is my turn to support this school that provided me with so many opportunities. Ultimately, I want to be part of creating transformative experiences for the next generation of young girls and pay it forward as generous donors did before me. See how we're opening the world for Castilleja girls. --> Campaign Newsletter - Fall 2024 --> Campaign Newsletter Fall 2024 Castilleja has always been bold and innovative, but this plan for our future is about going further. At the time, women could gain admission to Stanford, but they weren’t thriving there because they weren’t as prepared as their male classmates. Mary Lockey wanted to change that. Over a century later, as I took in the school community that has become her legacy, I realized that she had far exceeded her hopes. Everywhere I turned I saw girls and young women who were prepared for so much more than success in college. They were also inspired to ask hard questions and imagine new solutions, they delighted in their friendships and the world around them, and they were confident that they would lead lives of purpose. As a student, I attended girls’ school from kindergarten through 12th grade because my mother felt certain it was the right setting for me. At a very young age, I was drawn to science, and the curiosity that was instilled in me throughout my education led me to pursue my PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, but it was my love of teaching my undergraduate students that shaped my career. My family valued education, but not just for the pursuit of knowledge. It was also meant to help me understand how I was going to make a difference in this world, and I knew that being part of a school was where that would happen for me. At Castilleja, I see teachers who are drawn to education for the same reason, and I see students who take true joy in the pursuit of knowledge. They also take joy in robotics, athletics, the arts, spirit days, chalk drawings, and churros. Most of all, though, I see that they understand this remarkable education will help them learn how they will make a difference. Whether you are a prospective student, a current parent, a colleague, or an alum, this website will help you discover Castilleja as I saw it on that first day and as I see it now—a place where the next generation of women leaders are asking deep questions, forging lasting friendships, and amassing courage and confidence that will guide them long after they graduate. Warmly, Betty Noel-Pierre Betty's Bio Dr. Betty Noel-Pierre comes to Castilleja after serving as Head of Upper School at the Brearley School in Manhattan. Before joining Brearley, Dr. Noel-Pierre was Head of the Middle School at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn and Director of Equity and Diversity at the Browning School. As a student, Dr. Noel-Pierre attended girls’ school from kindergarten through 12th grade, so she brings deep and unique insight to her role as Head of School at Castilleja. After graduating from the Chapin School, she went on to pursue a BA in Biology and PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and began her teaching career during her graduate studies, earning the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Department. Since then, she has taught science in university, Upper School, and Middle School classrooms and has risen into leadership roles that established her strength as a collaborator who brings her vision and experience as a student and a teacher to all strategic conversations. Dr. Noel-Pierre also volunteered her time to help steward her alma mater when she served on Chapin’s Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2017, and she has rejoined the board now. Paper—the others only for travel or out of necessity. Who is one of your mentors? My grandmother, Betty. She has high standards and offers so much wisdom and laughter. She’s a real empowerer of women and has an uncanny ability to connect with just about everyone. Favorite club or leadership role as a student? No previous photography experience is necessary; students may enroll in this course in the fall semester only. Photography II Photography II will build upon the knowledge and skills that were introduced in Photography I. Students will learn more advanced studio lighting and editing techniques. In this class we will continue to address formal problems in photography (lighting, composition, color, etc. ) and historical analysis, but projects now will enable students to pursue individual interests and concerns. At the end of semester, students will curate a final photo collection that is cohesive and showcases personal interests, photographic style, and learning from throughout the semester. Prerequisite: Photography I; students may enroll in this course in the spring semester only. Visual Arts I In Visual Arts I students learn to create using techniques that allow for the free flow of ideas and are structured around research. At Castilleja, we believe the world needs more women leaders, and we know that the girls' school environment builds them. Every day we draw on a century of expertise in teaching and mentoring girls, and we inspire them to explore bold questions with intelligence, curiosity, and a sense of purpose. With the confidence and insight that they gain from their experiences around the Circle, our accomplished graduates lead for good in a diverse and complex world. The moment—it happens for every Castilleja student. At some point fairly soon after she arrives on the Circle, she looks up to realize she’s become completely engrossed—in robotics, in primary research, or in an improv scene. Whatever it is she's doing at that moment, as she stops to recognize the depth of her engagement, she also understands she’s truly at home. This happens because, at Castilleja we put girls at the center of everything we do. Girls thrive socially, intellectually, emotionally, and physically, and in this unique setting, they are able to explore challenging subjects with boundless enthusiasm while developing sustaining friendships. These strong connections, formed across grades and divisions, prepare girls to seek out mentors and step into leadership roles. Graduates of girls’ schools learn how to advocate for themselves, and decades of research prove this environment breaks down barriers to careers in STEM. But the moment we are talking about isn’t about data or glass ceilings. It comes before all that, and it marks an internal shift. It’s the joy that comes when our students discover that at Castilleja, they can really be their full and authentic selves: funny and focused, determined and direct, courageous and compassionate. This moment is what defines a Castilleja education, but even more important, it’s what makes our students special. Girls’ teams aren’t just part of what we do—they are everything we do. Our coaches understand what our student-athletes need to build mental strength and perform at their highest level by teaching leadership, self-confidence, well-being, collaboration, and resilience. With 13 Upper School and 11 Middle School sports and three-quarters of students participating, our athletic program is an essential part of daily life around the Circle. Our teams are coached by former Division-I players and professional athletes, and our campus boasts state-of-the art training facilities, and many of our athletes go on to compete at the collegiate level . Mentorship begins in Middle School, with Upper School students assisting the coaches. Our younger student-athletes see the future ahead of them as competitors and leaders. The entire community comes out strong to support our student-athletes, whether they are just starting a new sport in 6th grade or getting recruited for play beyond Castilleja. There is a place for every athlete to thrive within our comprehensive and competitive program, and we know sports foster the teamwork, skills, and self-confidence that a young woman needs for a lifetime of effective leadership.
