Please note we are not a 24 hour emergency facility & do not function as a walk-in critical care hospital. If you think your pet may require emergency care please do not hesitate to call our office immediately however we may direct you to an emergency hospital depending on veterinarian availability & individual case details. If it is outside of regular working hours we recommend you contact the 24-Hour Emergency Service at: SF Animal Medical Centre Animal Care & Emergency Services (ACES) Blue Pearl (Daly City) SAGE (The Mission & Redwood City) OakVet (Oakland)   Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care Your dog may need emergency care because of severe trauma, choking, heatstroke, an insect sting, household poisoning, or other life-threatening situation. Here are some signs that emergency care is needed Pale gums Rapid breathing Weak or rapid pulse Change in body temperature Difficulty standing Apparent paralysis Loss of consciousness Seizures Excessive bleeding Next Steps Pets who are severely injured may act aggressively toward their pet parents, so it’s important to first protect yourself from injury. For dogs: Approach your dog slowly and calmly; kneel down and say his name. If the dog shows aggression, call for help. If he’s passive, fashion a makeshift stretcher and gently lift him onto it. Take care to support his neck and back in case he’s suffered any spinal injuries. For cats: Gently place a blanket or towel over the cat’s head to prevent biting; then slowly lift the cat and place her in an open-topped carrier or box. Take care to support the cat’s head and avoid twisting her neck in case she’s suffered a spinal injury. Once you feel confident and safe transporting your pet, immediately bring them in. We recommend calling the clinic on your way so the staff knows to expect you and your pet. First Aid Treatments to Perform At Home Most emergencies require immediate veterinary care, but first aid methods may help you stabilize your pet for transportation. If your pet is suffering from external bleeding due to trauma, try elevating and applying pressure to the wound. If your pet is choking, place your fingers in his mouth to see if you can remove the blockage. If you’re unable to remove the foreign object, perform a modified Heimlich maneuver by giving a sharp rap to his chest, which should dislodge the object. Performing CPR on Your Pet CPR may be necessary if your pet is unconscious. First, check to see if he or she is breathing. If not, place them on their side and perform artificial respiration by extending their head and neck, holding their jaws closed, and blowing into their nostrils once every three seconds. (Ensure no air escapes between your mouth and the pet’s nose.) If you don’t feel a heartbeat, incorporate cardiac massage while administering artificial respiration—three quick, firm chest compressions for every respiration—until your dog resumes breathing on their own. What To Do If Your Pet Eats Something Poisonous If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic substance, please call our office immediately. If it is outside office hours consider taking your pet directly to a 24-Hour Emergency facility or contacting the  ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center 's 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435 . Trained toxicologists will consider the age and health of your pet, what and how much he ate, and then make a recommendation—such as whether to induce vomiting—based on their assessment. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card. DHPPV / DAPPV Vaccination The parvovirus vaccine is given as a 4-in-1 vaccination standing for Distemper, Hepatitis (Adenovirus), Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus. The first dose is administered as young as six weeks old and is then given in a 2 to 4-week interval until at least the age of 16 weeks old (totaling 3-4 times depending on when the 1st vaccine was given). A booster shot is given one year after the last interval dose, then again every three years. What is Canine Distemper? Canine distemper  is an extremely contagious viral disease. This disease is closely related to the virus that causes measles, and spreads through the air, attacking the tonsils and lymph nodes. The virus replicates in the body and attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, urogenital, and nervous systems. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for canine distemper; however, some dogs can recover fully after receiving treatment for symptoms and constant care.  After a dog has fully recovered, she will no longer carry or spread the disease. Symptoms can include; High fever, runny nose, eye discharge, red eyes, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and paralysis. Some dogs also experience thickening or enlargement of their footpads. What is Adenovirus & Hepatitis?  The canine adenovirus type 1 causes canine hepatitis. Dogs who suffer from this virus experience swelling and cell damage in the liver, which can result in hemorrhage and death. This virus can be contracted through the feces and urine of infected dogs. Symptoms include pain in the abdomen, abdominal distension, lack of appetite, pale color, lethargy, fever, and tonsillitis. Fluid swelling in the corneas often results in the appearance of the dog having blue eyes. Death within one to two days is common in more severe cases. However, if a dog survives the first few days, it can result in a full recovery and future immunity to the virus. The canine adenovirus type 2 is a relative of the hepatitis virus and is one of the causes of kennel cough. Once your dog receives the vaccine for this virus, the severity of it is limited, so the chance of death is unlikely. Symptoms include the development of a hacking cough a week after exposure, inflammation in the airways, white foamy discharge after coughing, pink eye, inflamed nasal passages, and nasal discharge. What is Parainfluenza? Parainfluenza, or canine influenza is highly contagious. Symptoms include dry cough, fever, wheezing, difficulty breathing, runny nose, sneezing, pneumonia, reduced appetite, lethargy, eye inflammation, runny eyes, and conjunctivitis. Most dogs recover on their own, but most vets like to treat them immediately using antibiotics and antiviral drugs since it is so contagious. A cough suppressant and additional fluids may also be given to your dog. What is Parvovirus?  Canine parvovirus (parvo)  is extremely contagious and is contracted through the feces of an infected dog & can live in the environment for up to 3 days. Unfortunately, parvo often kills young puppies with poorly developed immune systems. Around 91% of untreated parvo cases result in death. The parvo vaccine is the only way to prevent a dog from contracting this virus. Parvo cannot be spread from dogs to humans. Dogs that have contracted parvo generally show symptoms within three to ten days. The most commonly seen symptoms of parvo include secondary infections, dehydration, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, endotoxemia, shock, and eventually death. If a dog has a confirmed case of parvo they can infect neighborhood dogs with their feces and through soil that has come in contact with their feces. Dogs can still shed the parvovirus in their feces once they have recovered from the virus. The vaccine can take up to two weeks to take effect and fully protect a dog from it. Rabies Vaccination The rabies vaccine is given at 16 weeks of age & is compulsory for all dogs living in San Francisco.  Rabies  is a viral disease that can be carried by many mammals. This is one of the few zoonotic diseases (diseases humans can catch from their dogs). Rabies is commonly transmitted through a bite from an infected mammal. Rabies causes acute encephalitis and eventually infects the entire nervous system causing death. Rabies can be stopped if it is treated before symptoms occur. Once symptoms appear it becomes a fatal disease. Rabies can take anywhere from two to 12 weeks to present itself; however, some cases can take much longer. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by the pathogen Leptospira. Leptospira, or Leptospirosis, can affect canines and humans and can result in death in some cases. Dogs become infected with Leptospires (an organism that thrives in water) by consuming urine-contaminated water or contact with infected urine. Leptospires use a dog’s kidneys to breed and continue living out their life cycle. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, depression, loss of appetite, generalized pain, and conjunctivitis. Later symptoms include a drop in temperature, increased thirst, change in urine color, jaundice, frequent urination, dehydration, difficulty breathing, muscular tremors, vomiting, and bloody feces. Antibiotics can help shorten the length of the disease and reduce potential organ damage if caught in the early stages. In more severe cases, kidney filtration and blood transfusion may be necessary. About 10% of Leptospirosis cases result in death from secondary complications. Information about Non-Core Puppy Vaccinations What is Bordatella?  Bordatella (Kennel cough ) is caused by bacteria and is spread through airborne contaminants. Bordatella is spread through exposure to infected dogs or the transfer of bacteria in food bowls, cages, and water bowls. As bacteria multiply, it destroys the lining of the dog’s trachea, which results in a high-pitched cough. Dogs may also gag and wretch as they cough. Symptoms include fever, sne Pet Euthanasia | Saying Goodbye Skip to Main Content Skip to Footer CAREERS | Create Online Account Hours 100 Church St Suite B San Francisco, CA 94114 (415) 658-7745 Patient Center Payments Options Hospital Policies Puppy Information Kitten Information News & Articles Resources Close Services All Services Dog & Cat Wellness Care Diagnostics Pet Dental Care Holistic & Alternative Care Surgical Procedures Ophthalmology Pet Allergy & Dermatology Health Certificates Telemedicine Pet Emergencies Palliative Care Close Pharmacy & Pet Products About Us Locations Meet the Team Careers Rabies Free Africa Close Contact Contact Online Booking Client Forms Refill Request Close Online Booking Online Booking Call: (415) 658-7745 Hours Patient Center Payments Options Hospital Policies Puppy Information Kitten Information News & Articles Resources Close Services All Services Dog & Cat Wellness Care Diagnostics Pet Dental Care Holistic & Alternative Care Surgical Procedures Ophthalmology Pet Allergy & Dermatology Health Certificates Telemedicine Pet Emergencies Palliative Care Close Pharmacy & Pet Products About Us Locations Meet the Team Careers Rabies Free Africa Close Contact Contact Online Booking Client Forms Refill Request Close Create Online Account Careers Palliative Care A difficult decision. At The Castro Animal Hospital, we believe in maintaining the quality of life for our patients over all else. The concept of veterinary palliative medicine is a philosophy of care in which a decision has been made to decline or withdraw curative therapy for a life-limiting illness to ensure that a patient does not suffer unjustifiably. Therapy becomes more targeted toward keeping our patients comfortable. Palliative medicine is, by definition, care that is delivered as a dog or cat approaches their end of life. The most common circumstances that lead up to the decision to initiate palliative care include: The diagnosis or progression of a life-limiting illness The decision not to pursue curative therapy The progression of disease symptoms so that they interfere with the activities of daily living Euthanasia Making the decision to humanely euthanize a pet is never easy. Our veterinarians will help guide your decision-making so that when the time comes, you make a well-informed, comfortable choice. The Castro Animal Hospital provides a quiet room for you to say your 'goodbyes' & allows you and your family to be present with your pets throughout the process if you choose to be. Our Veterinarians will place an IV catheter and typically administer a small sedative to our patients to ensure they are calm and relaxed prior to putting them to sleep.  Private Cremation Private cremation is provided through Bubbling Well and is billed directly by their business. This service includes a Certificate of Private Cremation and one of several urn options. All arranged through Bubbling Well’s website . Communal Cremation For those who do not wish to keep the remains of their pet, we provide communal cremation services through Bubbling Well. This is billed directly to you from their business. At Home Burial Some owners may choose to take their pet home and bury them. Though The Castro Animal Hospital can release your pet's body to you, please keep in mind that there are some legal restrictions regarding pet burial pertaining to land ownership, burial depth, and proximity to residences, depending on your jurisdiction and the circumstances of your pet's death. Alternative burial options can be arranged through Bubbling Well.  We strongly recommend contacting your local public health official for more information prior to burying your pet.  Finally, we understand that some people may choose to euthanize their pets at home. Unfortunately, The Castro Animal Hospital does not offer At-Home Euthanasia services, but recommends the following mobile veterinarians who can provide this service. Your pet's oral health is important to their overall well-being as dental problems can not only cause bad breath but can also lead to more serious problems. Decreased appetite, difficulty chewing, weight loss, and depression could be signs of oral disease. Poor dental health may result in periodontal (gum) disease which can lead to tooth loss and infection. Bacteria that collects in the pockets between the tooth and the gum line can enter the bloodstream and may cause liver, kidney, or heart disease. Good oral health begins with scheduling an appointment for an examination. Recommendations for your pet's individual needs can then be determined. As a disease with a near 100% fatality rate once clinical symptoms appear, the decision to vaccinate is not just a routine check-up item—it is a life-saving necessity for your pet, your family, and your community.   Rabies Is 100% Preventable  Rabies is a virus that affects the central nervous system of mammals. It is most often spread through the bite of an infected animal. In the U.S. and Canada, wildlife such as bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes are the most common carriers. Pets can be exposed if they come into contact with these animals, even briefly.  What makes rabies especially concerning is that once symptoms appear, there is no effective treatment. The focus is entirely on prevention, and vaccinations are highly effective at stopping the disease before it starts.  Key Prevention Tips & Facts  Vaccination schedule  Most pets receive their first rabies vaccination between 12 and 16 weeks of age, followed by a booster one year later. After that, boosters are given every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine and local regulations.  Know the signs of rabies  Early signs can be subtle and may look like a change in your pet’s normal behavior. Watch for:  Unusual anxiety, restlessness, or withdrawal  Increased irritability or aggression  Sensitivity to light, touch, or sound  Fever or decreased appetite  As the disease progresses, symptoms can include:  Difficulty swallowing or excessive drooling  Staggering, weakness, or lack of coordination  Paralysis, especially in the hind limbs  Seizures  Unusual vocalization or behavior that seems out of character  If you ever notice these signs, especially after a possible exposure, contact your veterinarian immediately.  Avoid contact with unfamiliar animals  Do not approach or handle unknown animals, even if they seem friendly. If you see an animal behaving strangely, such as appearing disoriented, unusually aggressive, or overly tame, contact your local animal control.  Protect your community  Keeping your pet up to date on rabies vaccinations helps protect not only your household, but also your neighbors, local wildlife, and the broader community.  Protecting the One Health Connection  The idea of One Health is simple but powerful. The health of people, animals, and the environment are all connected. What affects one can affect all. Rabies is one of the clearest examples of this connection.  When you keep your dog or cat up to date on their rabies vaccinations, you are not just protecting your own pet. You are helping create a barrier that keeps this deadly virus from ever reaching people. Because rabies can be transmitted through a bite, even one exposure can have serious consequences. Preventing that exposure in the first place is what keeps families and communities safe.  Public health efforts rely heavily on strong vaccination rates in pets. In many areas, rabies vaccinations are required by law for this reason. These laws are not just about individual pets, they are about protecting entire communities. Keeping accurate, up to date vaccination records also becomes incredibly important if your pet is ever exposed to a wild or unknown animal, as it can significantly impact the next steps in care and monitoring.  Beyond the Individual Pet  When a large percentage of pets in a community are vaccinated, it creates what we call a protective buffer. The virus has fewer opportunities to spread, which helps stop outbreaks before they start.  This protection extends beyond your own home. It helps safeguard:  Other pets in your neighborhood  Older animals or those with compromised immune systems  Veterinary teams, animal control, and others who work closely with animals  Local wildlife populations, by limiting the spread of disease across species  Rabies prevention is truly a community effort. Each vaccinated pet plays a role in keeping that protection strong.  Vaccination is also one of the most effective tools we have in medicine. It is safe, cost effective, and has a long track record of success. Most importantly, it offers peace of mind. Whether your pet is exploring the backyard, going on a hike, or simply enjoying a walk around the neighborhood, you can feel confident they are protected from a disease that is otherwise devastating.  Schedule Your Visit Today  Protecting your pet is one of the most meaningful ways you can protect your family and your community.  If you are unsure whether your pet is up to date on their rabies vaccination or if they are due for a booster, we are here to help guide you. Keeping vaccinations current is one of the simplest and most important steps you can take for their long-term health.  Please contact us at (415) 658-7745 to schedule your pet’s wellness exam and stay on track with their vaccinations.  Next Article The Castro Animal Hospital 100 Church St Suite B San Francisco, CA 94114 email: [email protected] phone: (415) 658-7745 fax: (415) 651-9867 Veterinarians serving the San Francisco, CA area, including (but not limited to): Sausalito, Marin, Oakland, Emeryville, Daly City, San Mateo, South San Francisco, and San Bruno. A pet's dental health is just as important as their physical health, however, it often goes overlooked. The reality is that oral hygiene plays a huge part in ensuring your pet lives a long, healthy life. Dental disease is a common but serious problem. Approximately 80% of pets will develop it by the time they’re three and if left untreated, it will spread to the tooth socket and destroy bone. It also allows bacteria to travel from the mouth and through the body which can affect the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver and cause chronic health issues. The good news is that dental disease is entirely preventable and with regular preventive care, you can help your pet avoid the pitfalls associated with poor oral hygiene. How can I help my pet maintain good oral hygiene?  The best way to make sure your pet’s teeth remain healthy is by having routine annual exams. Whether you have a puppy or kitten with a mouth full of baby teeth or an adult pet whose teeth need to be checked for plaque, tartar, or dental disease, having a veterinarian examine them is the first step to making sure they’re in good health. During your pet’s comprehensive physical, your veterinarian will perform a dental health assessment and make recommendations for preventive care. Sometimes this will mean performing good home preventative care, other times, it will mean scheduling an appointment for a dental cleaning or extraction. Although we recommend brushing your pet’s teeth daily as part of a good preventive care routine, we understand that it’s not always possible. Luckily, there are other ways to maintain your pet’s oral health when you can’t brush their teeth. Utilize water additives  Give your pet a dental chew every other day Choose food and treats that control plaque and promote dental health Schedule dental cleanings as recommended by your veterinarian Basics of the Dental Procedure Anesthesia For proper dental cleaning and treatment general anesthesia is required. This allows for a thorough oral exam, cleaning and polishing of all tooth surfaces, and other procedures that may be required. We understand that anesthesia can be a concern for most clients. We take several precautions to be sure that anesthetic risk is minimized. Pre-anesthetic screening includes a physical exam, blood tests, and in some instances specialized testing to identify potential risk factors. This allows us to customize the anesthesia protocol for your pet's needs. Our trained veterinary technicians and assistants monitor heart rate, respiration, and other parameters during the procedure. IV catheters are placed prior to anesthesia to allow for easy administration of fluids and medications. For patients requiring more involved procedures, local anesthesia as well as other pain medication is administered for comfort. Use caution when considering  'no-anesthesia' teeth cleaning services  at pet stores or elsewhere. Although the teeth may look better in appearance, many problems may go undetected and in some cases, more harm than good may be done. It is illegal for dental treatments to be performed by anyone other than a veterinary professional in the state of California. Cleaning/polishing The teeth are cleaned (including below the gum line) with an ultrasonic scaler and then polished. Periodontal Evaluation/ Oral Radiography The gums are inspected and problem areas are identified. Radiographs (x-rays) help to identify bone loss or tooth root disease that may not be readily apparent. Antibiotic therapy may be applied in areas where 'pockets' have developed. Extractions Sometimes it may be necessary to extract badly diseased or damaged teeth. Ultimately, removing these teeth will result in a more comfortable patient and a healthier mouth. Home Care Introducing your pet to regular brushing is the ideal way to prevent dental problems after a proper cleaning. There are many dental products available to suit every pet's needs including treats and special diets. We can help you in deciding what works best for you! The cost of veterinary international health certificate appointments can be attributed to the comprehensive nature of the services provided. These appointments are not just routine check-ups; they involve a thorough examination of your pet to ensure they meet the specific entry requirements of the destination country, which may include a variety of vaccinations, tests for contagious diseases, and sometimes even parasite treatments. Additionally, the veterinarian's expertise in navigating the complex requirements for international pet travel is a specialized service and requires a special USDA accreditation and complete continuing education to maintain their accreditation. The process also requires the veterinarian to complete detailed paperwork compliant with international standards that often requires the endorsement of the USDA or other regulatory bodies, which adds to the cost. Considering the time, resources, and knowledge required to prepare a pet for safe and compliant international travel, the fees reflect the extensive care and attention to detail necessary to ensure a smooth journey for your companion.   Booking a Domestic Health Certificate Appointment If you require a CVI (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) for interstate travel, you can schedule a Domestic Health Certificate appointment  online  or by calling our office. PLEASE NOTE : The USDA APHIS (United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) provides state-specific requirements for starting your Domestic Health Certificate Process   Booking an International Health Certificate Appointment Create an ‘Alita’ account  to get started Alita is our compliance partner & will review your pet's records against destination requirements and ensure your health certificate appointment is booked within the correct time-frame. Alita will guide you through every step - including timeline, any required tests or vaccines, and the paperwork your destination needs ahead of your Veterinary Health Certificate Exam IMPORTANT : Alita Clearance is  required  to confirm any international health certificate appointment PLEASE NOTE : International health certificate appointments are only available to existing clients. To schedule an ‘Establish Care’ appointment please contact our office directly via phone or email or you can  book online . For additional information on international travel with pets, please visit the  USDA International Travel  website Know What is Required The Castro Animal Hospital is not responsible for ensuring that veterinary services, flights, and/or any other transportation arrangements are booked in accordance with the travel requirements.  Health Certificates can only be issued on the day of an appointment and cannot be issued retroactively.   The USDA may require a separate endorsement fee. See the "Additional USDA Endorsement Fees" section above. Some destinations do not accept digitally endorsed health certificates & therefore, a prepaid overnight envelope is required for the USDA to mail you your Health Certificate (Varies by destination; please check ahead with the USDA prior to your appointment) Airline Requirements We strongly recommend going to your airline's website and ensuring that you meet all of your airline’s requirements, as they may differ from the destination requirements. Some airlines require health certificates, while others do not, so calling and checking in with them to understand their requirements before your appointment can help us get you and your pet ready for travel Re-entry into the United States As of August 1, 2024, the CDC has changed its import requirements for dogs coming into the United States pertaining to rabies vaccinations and travel to countries deemed ‘High Risk’ for rabies. This includes dogs RETURNING to the United States. Failure to meet these requirements is not the responsibility of the USDA or USDA-certified veterinarian, and dog owners are responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate documentation for re-entry prior to travel. Full details & resources can be found on the  CDC website here  and the answers to FAQ’s on the  AVMA website here .   Additional Information: Rabies Titer (FAVN) Testing A Rabies Titer Test is a test for the production of antibodies in your pet in response to a Rabies vaccine & is a requirement for some countries for entry with a pet. This test can only be run through the  Kansas State Rabies Laboratory  and can take 6 to 8 weeks for turnaround from the time of your pet's blood draw. This test can therefore impede your traveling plans, so please keep this in mind when booking your appointment and travel plans.  Emotional Support Animals vs Service Animals Most Emotional Support Animals are no longer recognized for airline travel unless they are registered service animals. If you are traveling with a registered service animal, we recommend that you research what forms your airline may require you to complete prior to travel. We kindly ask you to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. To secure your first appointment with us, we kindly ask you to pay a deposit of $47. This deposit will be deducted from the total cost of your appointment unless you cancel or reschedule without giving us enough notice as per our cancellation policy below. We understand that emergencies may occur unexpectedly, so we always prioritize unscheduled emergency cases. However, this may cause occasional appointment delays. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we try to see each client on time. For your convenience, we also offer drop-off appointments. A drop-off means you can bring your pet to us at a time that suits you and leave them with us for a couple of hours. Usually, we will ask you to drop off your pet in the morning so our doctors can examine them in between appointments or at a reserved time for admitted patients. Once the doctor has finished examining your pet, they will call you to discuss the diagnosis and give you discharge instructions. Cancellation Policy We understand that unexpected changes can occur, and you may need to reschedule or cancel your appointment. We established a cancellation policy to ensure we can accommodate all our patients and provide the best possible care. If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, please notify our client service team at least 24 hours in advance for doctor and technician appointments and at least 48 hours in advance for specialty and procedure appointments. Appointments canceled outside the specified timeframes, or if missed entirely, will result in a cancellation/no-show fee being applied to your account. Additionally, arriving more than 10 minutes late may require you to reschedule, and a cancellation/no-show fee also may be applied. The Castro Animal Hospital team is grateful for your patience and cooperation! Patient Policy   For the safety of all animals in our care, we require that all vaccinations be up to date. Even though we make every effort to make our patients feel comfortable during visits, they may be a little uneasy about new people, new surroundings, and other pets. For this reason, we may ask you to restrain your pet or ask that we be allowed to bring your pet to the treatment area.  We require that all pets be placed on a leash or in pet carriers before entering The Castro Animal Hospital lobby. Prescription Policy State laws prohibit a veterinarian from dispensing or prescribing legend (prescription) medications without prior examination of your animal and current knowledge of your animal's health. Current knowledge is considered to be within one year's time. California Code of Regulations:  Title 16 Section 2032.1   Business and Professions Code: Section 4051(a) When prescription medication is necessary for your pet, you have a choice between obtaining the medication directly from us (the prescriber) or, if you prefer, we will provide you a written prescription that you may have filled by a pharmacy of your choice. Preventive care is an essential part of keeping your dog happy and healthy. It will give you peace of mind and increase the odds of detecting underlying health conditions before they become advanced and expensive. How often should my dog see a veterinarian? At The Castro Animal Hospital, we make our preventive care recommendations using the guidelines established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). From there, our veterinarians further customize their suggestions based on hereditary factors including your dog’s age, lifestyle, and medical history. Typically, we suggest scheduling at least one annual exam during which one of our veterinarians will review your dog’s medical history, assess their behavior, make dietary recommendations, and evaluate any known health conditions they may have.  What should I expect from a preventive dog care exam? Think of your dog’s annual exam like your own yearly physical. At the appointment, we’ll read their temperature, examine their eyes, ears, teeth, and skin, listen to their heart and lungs, and evaluate their joint health.  You can also expect your veterinarian to make recommendations for: Vaccines based on your dog’s lifestyle or breed - Core vaccines include rabies, distemper, and Leptospirosis, although your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccines like canine influenza, Bordetella, and Lyme Parasite prevention products to keep your dog safe from fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and heartworms Diagnostic testing to identify any health conditions that cannot be detected during a physical exam and to confirm your dog is free from internal parasites At your dog’s annual exam, your veterinarian will answer any questions you may have and discuss other services that could improve their overall health such as spay or neutering , microchipping , and dental care . To schedule your dog’s annual exam, call us at (415) 658-7745 or request a  dog exam appointment online . A wellness visit is more than just a checkup. It's a chance to talk with your veterinarian about your pet's lifestyle, to understand potential risk factors that might develop as they age, and to establish a diagnostic baseline while your pet is healthy. Research shows that including diagnostic testing in a wellness visit can uncover potential issues in up to 40% of dogs and 60% of cats. Identifying problems early can help your pet live a happier, healthier life and avoid additional costs associated with treatments if a disease goes undetected. What do we look at during a wellness visit, and why? A comprehensive wellness visit can give us a clearer picture of your pet's health so we can make the best recommendations for its care. The exam includes diagnostic screening tests and a physical exam from nose to tail. A Wellness Exam Eyes – Small changes in the eyes may cause problems with vision or may be a sign of underlying diseases that would require treatment. Ears and Skin – Evaluation can help us detect skin parasites like ear mites or fleas and changes that can signal infection or other conditions. Mouth and teeth -  Evaluating the health and color of the gums and teeth can help us take proactive measures to protect and maintain healthy teeth and possibly identify signs of other underlying systemic diseases. Abdomen – Abnormal size or shape of organs or changes in the digestive tract can point us to disease, even without symptoms.  Heart and Lungs – Issues with the heart and lungs affect the body's ability to circulate blood and oxygen, which can have far-reaching effects in the body. Joints, muscle, and mobility – Looking for evidence of arthritis or changes in muscle and ability to move can help us determine if other treatments are necessary for support.  Proactive Diagnostic Screening Blood cell health - Evaluating blood cells provides insight into the immune system, risks of bleeding, and the ability to distribute oxygen to the body. Organ function - Blood testing can help us evaluate liver and kidney function and determine levels of important proteins, electrolytes, and thyroid hormones. Urine testing provides additional information on hydration and bladder health and deeper insights into organ function. Infectious disease - We also test the blood for dangerous parasites like heartworms and diseases that ticks can transmit. We can also test cats that go outdoors for diseases that can be contracted by contact with other cats. Pets may harbor intestinal parasites without outward signs; some are transmissible to humans. Fecal testing for pets detects intestinal parasites to help reduce pet infections and protect humans. Note: This data is based on wellness profiles that included a complete chemistry profile, CBC testing, urinalysis, and for cats 7 years old and older, total T4 testing.  Talk with your veterinarian about including proactive, diagnostic screening tests at your pet's next wellness visit. To schedule your pet's next wellness visit or if you have any questions about wellness exams or proactive diagnostic screening tests, please call us at   (415) 658-7745 .  Information and data provided by our friends at Idexx . As a result, every new kitten (or adult cat) should be tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Both of these viruses are contagious and can be life-threatening.  Vaccines Vaccines are critical to the health of your new kitten.  FVRCP is a 3-way vaccine used to help protect against viral upper airway infections and gastrointestinal diseases. It is a series of between 2-4 vaccines. FeLV is also known as the Feline Leukemia Virus vaccine.  FeLV infection can attack the immune system and can be life-threatening.  FeLV is transmitted by infected cats through blood and saliva, so if your kitten will be strictly indoors, this vaccine may not be necessary. Rabies is a vaccine given to kittens over 16 weeks of age in California to protect against the rabies virus.  It is important and required by county law, due to human health concerns. Vaccine Reactions Typically pets will feel sleepy or sore the day they receive the vaccines. They may also run a low-grade fever. We have taken great care to provide what we feel are the safest vaccines available for your pet, but there is a slight chance that vaccines can predispose cats to tumor development.   ? Additional Information Fleas Fleas can be a nuisance and health risk to you and your pet. Once they infect your pet and home, they can be more difficult to get rid of so we recommend treatment even if you aren’t seeing fleas currently. Polk Street Animal Hospital carries: Revolution (>6 wks) topical insecticide which kills fleas, some ticks, and  some internal parasites.  Fecal Exam There are many intestinal parasites your kitten can carry.  It is very important to bring in a fecal sample for us to evaluate with special testing under a microscope.  Some parasites are transmissible to humans (zoonotic) so this is a critical step for the health of your pet and the protection of your family.  Diet Kittens should be fed a commercially available and balanced kitten diet of moist or dry food from weaning until 1 yr of age.  We do not currently recommend any of the “raw” or “grain-free” diets for kittens. Ideally, train your kitten to be meal fed rather than free feeding.  This will help control problems with obesity that could develop later in life.  Toxicities  Although rare, kittens are more likely to be exposed to toxins than adult cats. Radiator fluid, lilies, garlic, onions, grapes, and raisins can all be extremely toxic to cats. Please call if you think your cat has been exposed. Spay & Neuter We recommend your kitten be spayed or neutered at 5-6 months of age. Neutering your male kitten will help reduce the risk of spraying and marking behaviors.  Sterilizing your pet is the most responsible choice you can make to prevent cat overpopulation. Pets can struggle with dermatological issues the same way people can. It’s common for the issues to cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms that range from minor itching and discomfort to outright pain. We can diagnose and treat numerous skin conditions including allergies, autoimmune conditions, dermatitis, infections, hormonal disorders, parasites, tumors, and skin cancer.  Diagnosing Skin Conditions At The Castro Animal Hospital, we rely on state-of-the-art technology to help us identify the cause of skin conditions in pets. We may require blood work and/or a biopsy to aid us in diagnosing the issue. Once we diagnose the condition, we can treat using a number of modalities, some of which may include medications, supplements, topical creams, and surgery. We don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” treatment, so your pet’s treatment plan will be tailored to meet their individual needs.   Managing Allergies in Pets If we conclude that an allergy is causing your pet’s discomfort, we’ll establish whether the allergy is environmental or food related and then try to further pinpoint the exact cause. From there, we’ll work with you to develop a strategy to limit your pet’s exposure to that specific trigger. We’re often able to alleviate symptoms of allergies in pets. In cases where the condition is chronic we focus on alleviating the symptoms with long term management using a variety of treatment modalities. Your pet may have an allergy if they exhibit the following behaviors: Obsessively chewing or licking the affected area Grooming more than usual  Constant scratching that leads to flaking skin, bald spots, and/or scabs Other common signs of allergies include unusual lumps or bumps and smelly ears.  If you notice these symptoms and think your pet may be struggling with a skin condition caused by an allergy, let us address the issue and help them live a more comfortable life. Call us at (415) 658-7745 or request online to schedule a consultation. Acupuncture is a gentle, non-invasive treatment used to treat sick and injured pets. This particular treatment is especially helpful for animals living with chronic health conditions such as arthritis. Much like reiki, acupuncture is a holistic healing practice that has withstood the test of time. Centuries ago, acupuncture originated in ancient China and has since been used to promote healing and balance energy. The process involves placing thin, sterilized needles into specific parts of the body, known as acupuncture points, to stimulate the immune system.  Acupuncture can be used to provide relief from the following conditions: Neck and/or back pain Arthritis and musculoskeletal injuries Cancer and symptoms associated with chemotherapy Respiratory problems such as asthma Skin problems such as allergies Acute and chronic conditions that have not responded to traditional medicine Acute and chronic conditions that are currently being treated with traditional medicine Additionally, acupuncture aids in neurological recovery, immune system support, and senior pet care.  How will my pet react to veterinary acupuncture?  Luckily, most pets accept veterinary acupuncture with ease. Of the few that initially dislike needles, many become receptive over time. Because acupuncture needles are so fine, pets rarely experience any discomfort and most lie down to rest during the session.  Treatments are relaxing, balancing, and tailored to each individual patient. The number of sessions your pet will require is based on the issue being addressed as well as their response to treatment. For some pets, three to eight initial treatments will suffice while, for others, a single session every three to four weeks works best. Every session lasts approximately 30 minutes. If you’d like to learn more about acupuncture or you’d like to schedule a consultation for your pet, call us at (415) 658-7745 .  The Castro Animal Hospital 100 Church St Suite B San Francisco, CA 94114 email: [email protected] phone: (415) 658-7745 fax: (415) 651-9867 Veterinarians serving the San Francisco, CA area, including (but not limited to): Sausalito, Marin, Oakland, Emeryville, Daly City, San Mateo, South San Francisco, and San Bruno. Rabies Free Africa empowers countries in East Africa to establish self-sustaining programs aimed at eliminating human rabies deaths and implementing surveillance systems to identify and contain future outbreaks. Through innovative research and initiatives, the team focuses on conducting mass vaccination campaigns and community-based programs, targeting areas where rabies poses the greatest threat. We are donating a portion of proceeds from rabies vaccinations to support this cause. Every dollar donated contributes to vital vaccination programs, bringing us closer to our goal of a rabies-free world. Additionally, our veterinarians have the opportunity to participate in annual trips organized by Rabies Free Africa, where they lend their skills and knowledge to support vaccination efforts in communities in need. Our team also supports this great cause through other initiatives including: Local school presentations Celebrating World Rabies Day Vaccination clinics If you want to support this cause, please visit the button below:     Rabies Facts Rabies is a viral disease that is predominantly transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. It affects the central nervous system and if a person does not receive proper medical care after a potential rabies exposure, it can result in infection and death. In the United States, rabies is primarily found in wild animals like raccoons, bats, foxes, and skunks, but in several other countries, pets are still rabies carriers. The majority of worldwide rabies deaths are the result of bites from dogs and cats.     Zero By Thirty Major health organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are working together to eliminate rabies deaths in people by 2030. We have the vaccines, medicines, tools, and technologies to prevent people from dying from pet-mediated rabies. For a relatively low cost, it is possible to break the disease cycle and save lives. There are two types of glaucoma. Primary, or chronic, glaucoma is hereditary or develops as your pet ages. Secondary, or acute, glaucoma develops as the result of an injury or illness. Because secondary glaucoma can progress rapidly, it is considered an emergency situation. Symptoms of glaucoma to look for include: Redness in the eye Tearing or discharge Eye sensitivity to light Pain Cloudy-looking eye Bulging eyeball At The Castro Animal Hospital, we recommend that your pet receive a routine glaucoma exam as part of his or her regular wellness care. The exam is not only an effective screening measure for chronic and acute glaucoma, but it can also help set a baseline measurement of your pet's normal intraocular pressure (IOP). Establishing an IOP baseline is important because the normal measurement can vary between species, breeds, and even individual pets. This is a noninvasive, simple procedure that should not cause your pet any pain or discomfort. We apply a mild anesthetic eye drop to ensure your pet is comfortable during the exam. Call us at (415) 658-7745 if you think your pet needs an eye exam. Preventive care is an essential part of keeping your cat happy and healthy. It will give you peace of mind and increase the odds of detecting underlying health conditions before they become advanced and expensive. How often should my cat see a veterinarian? At The Castro Animal Hospital, we make our preventive care recommendations using the guidelines established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). From there, our veterinarians further customize their suggestions based on hereditary factors including your cat’s age, lifestyle, and medical history. Typically, we suggest scheduling at least one annual exam during which one of our veterinarians will review your cat’s medical history, assess their behavior, make dietary recommendations, and evaluate any known health conditions they may have. What should I expect from a preventive cat care exam? Think of your cat’s annual exam like your own yearly physical. At the appointment, we’ll read their temperature, examine their eyes, ears, teeth, and skin, listen to their heart and lungs, and evaluate their joint health. You can also expect your veterinarian to make recommendations for: Vaccines based on your cat’s lifestyle or breed. Core vaccines include rabies and feline distemper, although your veterinarian may recommend additional vaccines like feline leukemia (FeLV) Parasite prevention products to keep your cat safe from fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and heartworms Diagnostic testing to identify any health conditions that cannot be detected during a physical exam and to confirm your cat is free from internal parasites At your cat's annual exam, your veterinarian will answer any questions you may have and discuss other services that could improve their overall health such as spaying/neutering , microchipping , and dental care . Call us at (415) 658-7745 or request an appointment online to schedule your cat's annual preventive care exam. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled http://castroanimalhospital.com/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
