News Flash Posted on May 06, 2026 The City of Rancho Santa Margarita invites residents to attend the 5th Annual Fire Safety and Preparedness Community Meeting on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center. This annual community meeting brings together public safety agencies, utility providers, emergency preparedness organizations, and residents for an evening focused on wildfire readiness, emergency planning, and community resilience. The event will begin with a Preparedness Expo from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by the formal program beginning at 5:30 p.m. Residents will have the opportunity to connect directly with emergency response professionals, learn about local preparedness resources, and gain practical information to help protect their homes and families during wildfire season and other emergencies. Hosted by the City of Rancho Santa Margarita in partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority OCFA, and the office of Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez, this year’s meeting emphasizes the importance of community participation and preparedness through collaboration between residents and local agencies. As wildfire risks continue throughout Southern California, the annual meeting serves as an important forum for sharing information, strengthening partnerships, and encouraging proactive emergency planning. Expert presentations will cover a range of timely topics, including wildfire home resilience, evacuation preparedness, insurance challenges in high-fire severity zones, public safety power shutoffs, water reliability during emergencies, and Firewise USA community initiatives. Residents will also learn how local agencies coordinate during emergency situations and what steps households can take now to be better prepared. Participating agencies and organizations include: California Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez, 71st District Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) Rancho Santa Margarita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Southern California Edison (SCE) Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) Orange County REALTORS® (OCAR) Community Associations of Rancho Santa Margarita (CAR) Rancho Cielo Firewise USA Community Mission Viejo Animal Services SAMLARC Orange County Fire Watch Be Fire Safe Coalition The first 50 attendees will receive a free preparedness tool courtesy of the Rancho Santa Margarita CERT program. The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Residents are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and take advantage of the many resources available to help improve household and neighborhood preparedness. Community members can also visit the City’s YouTube channel to view presentations from previous years’ Fire Safety and Preparedness Community Meetings. The event is free, and registration is not necessary. Home NewsFlash Honor a veteran through the City’s Commemorative Plaque Program News Flash Honor a veteran through the City’s Commemorative Plaque Program Create a lasting tribute as part of the new Veterans Monument. Personalized plaques will become a permanent part of this memorial. News Flash Posted on May 15, 2026 The City of Rancho Santa Margarita is proud to invite residents to participate in a lasting tribute honoring the courage, sacrifice, and service of America’s veterans through the new Veterans Monument at City Hall. The monument, currently under development adjacent to City Hall and Central Park, will serve as a permanent place of reflection, remembrance, and community pride for generations to come. The project was unanimously approved by the City Council as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to recognizing and supporting the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. As part of the program, residents now have the opportunity to honor a veteran through personalized commemorative brass plaques that will become part of the monument installation. Families, loved ones, and veterans themselves may submit inscriptions recognizing military service and preserving individual legacies within the community memorial. The monument’s design includes military service seals representing the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force, along with a central dedication plaque, decorative stonework, integrated lighting, and shaded seating areas designed to encourage reflection and remembrance. “This monument will serve as a lasting tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of all who have worn our nation’s uniform,” said Mayor Tony Beall following the project’s approval. To qualify for the plaque program, the honored veteran must have a connection to Rancho Santa Margarita, either as a current resident or a former resident who lived in the community for at least five years. Applicants must provide proof of residency and military service documentation. Plaque inscriptions are limited to three lines of text and are subject to City review for formatting consistency. The non-refundable plaque fee is $150, which covers fabrication, engraving, and professional installation as part of the permanent monument display. The Veterans Monument reflects Rancho Santa Margarita’s longstanding commitment to honoring veterans and preserving opportunities for remembrance and community connection. Construction of the monument is anticipated to align with the City's Flag Day observance. Residents interested in participating in the commemorative plaque program can learn more, review eligibility requirements, and complete the application online through the City’s Veterans Monument webpage. To have your plaque included in time for the Monument Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony on June 14th, please submit your completed form and payment by May 21, 2026. Additional Info... Home NewsFlash Report coyote encounters directly to Mission Viejo Animal Services News Flash Report coyote encounters directly to Mission Viejo Animal Services In light of the many coyote encounters posted on social media, the City is reminding residents to report them directly to the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center to ensure coyote activity is tracked and appropriate actions are taken. News Flash Posted on February 04, 2026 If you encounter a coyote, report it online to Mission Viejo Animal Services, the City's animal services provider. Known for their adaptability and resilience, coyotes are common in both rural and urban areas. These intelligent animals are typically wary of humans but can pose a threat to pets if left unattended, especially small dogs and cats. Ensuring pet safety in coyote-prone areas requires awareness, preventative measures, and community cooperation. Coyotes are most active during dawn and dusk, though they can be seen at any time. They are opportunistic feeders, meaning they will take advantage of easy food sources, including pet food, garbage, and small animals. To protect pets, it's essential to keep them indoors and on leash and supervised closely when outside. Here are some key tips for safety in areas with coyote activity: Secure Feeding Areas: Avoid leaving pet food or water outside, as this can attract coyotes. Feed pets indoors or remove any food dishes immediately after feeding. Proper Waste Management: Keep garbage in secure containers and avoid composting meat scraps, as the smell can lure coyotes into residential areas. Pet Supervision: Always accompany pets outside, especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime. Keep dogs on a six-foot leash during walks and avoid areas where coyotes have been known to be sighted. Nighttime Precautions: Install motion-activated lights or sprinklers to deter coyotes from approaching your property at night. Noise and Deterrents: Make loud noises or use coyote deterrents like whistles, air horns, or garden hoses if you spot a coyote nearby. These can scare them away and reinforce their natural fear of humans. Community Awareness: Work with neighbors to share information about coyote sightings and collectively implement safety measures. Educating the community about coyote behavior and deterrent strategies can enhance overall safety. Report encounters to animal services. Pet Training: Teach pets to come when called and discourage them from chasing wildlife. Training can be crucial in preventing potentially dangerous encounters. While coyotes are a natural part of the ecosystem, pet owners can take proactive steps to ensure their pets' safety. By understanding coyote behavior, securing homes and yards, and fostering community cooperation, we can minimize risks and coexist peacefully with these adaptable animals.
