Before they ever step into a classroom, admitted students at Cal State Long Beach are already asking a bigger question: Can I see myself here?   At Saturday's Day at The Beach, that answer took shape in real time, as thousands of students and families moved through campus in search of direction, support and a sense of place.   In welcoming remarks at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid, CSULB President Andrew Jones ‘82 — himself a first-generation college graduate — congratulated admitted students for being chosen from a pool of 110,000 applicants and promised their families not only excellent faculty and mentorship, but “a campus culture where students can bring their full selves, pursue big goals and know that they belong.   “Imagine,” he said, “what your future would look like here at The Beach.”   Image CSULB President Andrew Jones addresses a packed audience at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid during this year's Day at The Beach. Incoming business major Sarina Waite didn’t have to go far to do just that.   In a ballroom beneath the Pyramid, Waite found the annual Admitted Black Student Reception, featuring food, music, speeches and a ceremony honoring Black elders.   It’s so inviting here. Even on a simple Instagram page you can meet your best friend. At one point, Daria Graham, associate vice president of Student Success and Engagement, asked guests to look around the room while the Black faculty, staff and students in attendance greeted them with a wave.   “Every hand that waved is part of your community,” she said. “Every hand that waved is part of your network. Every hand that waved is here for your success . . . It’s the difference between when someone says, ‘You are welcome,’ and when they give you the keys. Here are the keys.”    For Waite, the message resonated.   “I grew up in El Segundo — so a predominantly white area,” she said. “To be able to find another community where there are people that look like me, it’s definitely refreshing. It feels like a part of my identity can be more vibrantly shown.”    Image Image Image Anaheim native Yousef Rizkalla, who plans to major in mechanical engineering, accompanied his friend Blen Zekarias-Dammena, an aspiring nurse. Zekarias-Dammena said she’d met Waite on an Instagram account for Class of 2030 students, and they jelled immediately.   "I was really scared coming in,” she said. “I was like, 'Oh my God, I’m not going to make friends.’ And then I connected with Sarina and I'm like, ‘That’s it.’”   It’s the difference between when someone says, ‘You are welcome,’ and when they give you the keys. Here are the keys.”    Waite agreed, crediting the university with creating so many inclusive spaces.   “It’s so inviting here,” she said. “Even on a simple Instagram page you can meet your best friend.”    That theme — of small but meaningful connections at an event of such scale — repeated itself throughout the day. Across campus, students spread out in every direction, moving between tents, classrooms and courtyards, touring labs and campus housing, loading up on CSULB merch at the bookstore. Along the way, they encountered student-led clubs and campus resources — from cultural centers and identity-based groups to first-generation programs, LGBTQ+ services, women-focused organizations and transfer support.    Image Attendees could not have asked for better weather Saturday. Despite a forecast of possible rain, hundreds of tents, tours and talks remained outdoors. At the admissions booth, where students could officially accept their offers, cowbells rang out each time someone made it official.   “Zayla! Zayla!” organizers cheered as a beaming Zayla Robinson, a transfer student from Morgan State University in Maryland, accepted her offer to study sociology.   “The communication and the resources have been amazing,” said her mother, Zanetta Robinson. “I was looking at the safety [as well as her potential for] cultural and academic success, and all of that seems to be here. I mean, it’s just a win-win. I love it.”   Imagine what your future would look like here at The Beach. Nearby, Long Beach native Sofia Sund arrived with her parents and grandmother, already familiar with campus through years of visits and family ties.   "Something that really surprised me was the amount of people here to help with financial aid,” she said, adding that, despite scholarships, cost is still a concern. What comforted her was "actually being here and hearing them tell us they’re going to help.”   By the end of the day, those moments — of recognition, resources and reassurance — had done their work.   Students weren’t just imagining themselves at Cal State Long Beach.   They were choosing it. He wanted to reach those too often dismissed as unreachable, so they could express themselves and be understood.   And that’s what he did — just not in the way he had planned.   In a poignant turn that took him from psychology to primatology, Fouts helped teach the world’s first chimpanzee to use American Sign Language, a breakthrough that would influence the rest of his life, eventually guiding him from research to advocacy.   In fact, by the time Fouts retired 15 years ago, he had become a leading critic of great ape research and a key voice in the movement that ultimately brought an end to invasive chimpanzee experimentation in the United States. Alongside renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, he argued that chimpanzees are intelligent, socially sophisticated beings whose treatment should mirror that of humans.   “We are not different in kind,” he said. “We are different in degree.”   A defining detour   Fouts’ trajectory may have been unplanned, but he traces the throughline straight back to a CSULB professor who recognized and nurtured his unique talents. The professor was Joseph White, a clinical psychologist who would later become known as the godfather of Black psychology.   “Joe White was amazing,” Fouts said. White prioritized relationships over theory and built immediate trust, especially with children. “He saw that in me, too,” Fouts said. “He called it ‘a knack.’”   By his final year in college, Fouts had plans to marry fellow alumna Deborah Harris Fouts ’65 and move straight into a top clinical psychology doctoral program.    Joe White was amazing . . . He had a tremendous effect on me. White supported his ambition, but not his approach.    “He was very realistic,” Fouts said, “in that he knew that my grades weren't always the best all through my career.”   White suggested widening the field and considering other disciplines — which led Fouts to the University of Nevada, where researcher Allen Gardner was raising a chimpanzee named Washoe as a deaf human child while attempting to teach her sign language; he needed a graduate assistant.    Fouts flew to Reno for an interview, which didn’t go well. “I basically blew the interview,” he said.   Image Roger Fouts teaches hand signs to Washoe, a chimpanzee whose ability to communicate challenged long-held assumptions about animal cognition. (Photo by United Press International) Image Fouts and Washoe receive a visit from the late Jane Goodall, who would write the foreword for Fouts' memoir. (Photo courtesy of William Morrow and Company, Inc., New York) Image Under Fouts' care, Washoe, would eventually begin creating her own words: Swans became "water birds." Radishes were “cry hurt food.” (Photo by Lee Balterman, Getty Images) A major breakthrough Before leaving for the airport, though, Gardner walked him to a fenced area where Washoe was playing. She spotted them, ran forward and leapt over the fence — not toward Gardner, but to Fouts.   “She jumped into my arms,” he said, still marveling at the encounter. “I'm sure she saw that I needed a hug.”   Gardner may not have wanted Fouts for the job, but Washoe did.   “For 20 hours a week, I was with Washoe. I changed diapers, prepared meals, played games.”   Caregivers signed constantly, modeling communication as part of daily life. Over time, Washoe acquired hundreds of signs and used them intentionally.    She jumped into my arms. I'm sure she saw that I needed a hug. The real breakthrough came years later when she began generating her own language — swans as “water birds,” Thanksgiving as “Bird Meat Day,” and radishes as “cry hurt food.”   “She wasn’t just imitating; she was communicating.”   With Deborah as his collaborator, Fouts expanded his research, eventually landing at Central Washington University, where the couple founded the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute , a sanctuary where chimps were allowed to interact with humans only when they chose to do so.    Washoe would live out the rest of her years there, dying in the Foutses’ arms in 2007 at age 42 — a loss they felt deeply, having come to view her as family.   Image Roger Fouts, left, and his wife, Deborah, at a memorial to the primate program they founded at Central Washington University. The university, where Fouts taught for many years, honored Washoe, as well as four other chimpanzees, following her death in 2017. A shared commitment   Meanwhile, Fouts had begun using his platform to speak out against the scientific community’s often-barbaric use of chimps. In 1997, he co-authored “Next of Kin,” a book that framed chimpanzees as relatives — biological, emotional and moral.    Image Although he was invited to serve on advisory panels and regulatory discussions, biomedical researchers framed his concerns as sentimentality.   “They called me ‘activist’ and so on. As if there’s something wrong with having compassion.”   Fouts never lost touch with White — who established CSULB's Educational Opportunities Program in 1967 to serve historically low-income, first-gen students; the program later expanded across the CSU system. Over the years, their conversations often returned to questions of race and power, and the importance of standing with those who don’t have it. White called Fouts “his voice,” he said. “He took ownership. He had a tremendous effect on me.”    Reflecting on what he would tell students today, Fouts pointed to the impulse that first drew him to psychology — a desire to give voice to those unable to speak for themselves.   “Keep your mind,” he said, “but most important, keep your heart.”   About this series Dreams in college are rarely discovered fully formed. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled https://www.csulb.edu/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
