Offices went dark, streets were empty, and everyone was asking the same question: what's next for the city's core? Five years later, our city's core is coming alive again. The Downtown SF Partnership (DSFP), working hand in hand with our stakeholders, has reimagined what a Downtown can be: vibrant public spaces, streets alive with art and activity, and businesses not just recovering, but thriving. From Let's Glow SF , the largest holiday projection arts festival in the nation, to California's first Entertainment Zone , we have turned Downtown into a destination where bold, unforgettable experiences happen around every corner. Our mission has always been bigger than clean and safe streets. We are creating an environment where Downtown drives the city's economy, sparks connection, and fuels energy. Through our Public Realm Action Plan , underused spaces are transformed into experiences that make people want to be here again and again. That is why DSFP is renewing the Downtown Community Benefit District a full 10 years early and expanding our district boundaries. This renewal will sustain and grow the programs proven to make a difference, ensuring Downtown remains a hub where business, creativity, and community converge. Downtown's future is ours to shape. Property owners, now is the moment to reaffirm your commitment. Together, we can create a stronger, more vibrant San Francisco today and for decades to come. His untimely demise in 1848 started a race to control the vast fortune of this remarkable man who concealed his biracial identity for much of his life.  The tour begins and ends on Leidesdorff Street at the large mural “Beyond the Sea” created by Elaine Chu and Marina Perez-Wong of the Twin Walls Mural Company . We’ll also visit the sites of his many achievements, from bustling wharves and luxury hotels to the foundations of California’s first public school. Along the way, we’ll weigh his impact on early San Francisco, consider the battle to control his legacy, and visit several public works of art that attempt to reflect and sometimes direct his fascinating story. Meet on Commercial Street, just east of Montgomery, where the location of the original shoreline from 1850 is painted in bright colors on the street. As a major hub served by a wide range of regional transit operators, activity in the district tends to move closely with the systems that connect it to the broader Bay Area. A Data-Driven Foundation The Downtown SF Partnership maintains the transit dashboard to provide a data-driven foundation for advocacy and urban planning. By quantifying how regional mobility trends align with downtown visitation, we can better support transit investments and policy discussions that strengthen the urban core. Visitation here is measured using Placer.ai’s estimated foot traffic, which represents aggregated device-based visit counts within the Downtown SF Partnership district boundary. This metric includes employees, residents, and visitors and reflects total visit activity rather than unique individuals. Transit dashboard Explore the Historical Associations To provide a more detailed view of the relationship between transit and visitation, we developed the  Downtown Visits: Transit Sensitivity Simulator . This tool models historical associations, allowing users to explore how changes in transit ridership corresponded with changes in downtown foot traffic. Use the simulator below to adjust BART, Ferry, and Bridge activity and see the model-implied change in downtown visits based on the historical elasticities estimated in the analysis. Considerations MUNI ridership was excluded from the model because it lacked independent explanatory power. Most of its variation is explained by other transit variables, thus it was dropped by the ElasticNet regularization. These are associational elasticities, not causal, based on historical data from 2020 to 2025. Sliders stop at −99% (not −100%) because the model is log-based and requires positive values (a full −100% would imply zero ridership/crossings, which is outside the model’s valid range). Important Note on Interpretation These results represent associational elasticities derived from historical data. They describe patterns of alignment and do not imply a direct causal relationship or a guaranteed forecast of future visitation. Because visitation is shaped by many forces (employment patterns, tourism, major events, and broader economic shifts), the model should be interpreted as a measure of historical co-movement, rather than an isolated transit effect. The Value of Modeling and Data Monitoring Recovery Benchmarking Our transit dashboard uses 2019 levels to benchmark the district’s transit recovery. The simulator specifically highlights the modes that provided the strongest statistical signals in our model. Regional Connectivity Modeling these historical trends further highlights downtown’s role as a central destination and a vital link within the greater Bay Area transportation network. Downtown Accessibility Transit brings people into the district, while walkable streets and destinations may influence how long visitors stay. The close alignment between ridership and visits underscores the importance of maintaining an accessible urban core. Methodology: Robust Variable Selection and Validation The simulator is based on monthly ridership and visitation data from 2020 through 2025. Transit ridership is used here as an indicator of broader regional movement into and through downtown. For data collection, this analysis combines publicly available regional mobility data with downtown visitation estimates from Placer.ai, restricted to the Downtown SF Partnership district boundary. Key inputs include: BART Ridership Monthly ridership data from BART, limited to the two downtown core stations: Embarcadero and Montgomery. MUNI Boardings The average daily boardings by route and month from SFMTA, restricted to lines operating within the district, were converted by weekday and weekend counts to monthly totals for the purpose of this analysis. Ferry Ridership Monthly ridership statistics from regional ferry operators, including: SF Bay Ferry and Golden Gate Ferry Bridge Crossings Monthly traffic volumes from major regional bridges, including: Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge Data Analysis Downtown visits were treated as the dependent variable, with transit ridership and bridge crossings modeled as explanatory variables. To account for recurring seasonal patterns in travel and visitation, we included month indicator variables ("monthly dummies"). All primary variables were modeled in log form, allowing coefficients to be interpreted as elasticities (percent change relationships). We applied ElasticNet regularization, an update from previously using pure LASSO, to identify which transit modes provided the strongest independent explanatory power. ElasticNet handles multicollinearity gracefully by distributing coefficient weight across related variables while still performing variable selection. Model specification was confirmed on held-out chronological test data to ensure stability. Under this process, MUNI ridership was excluded from the final model. This does not suggest MUNI is unimportant; rather, its month-to-month variation closely overlaps with other regional mobility measures and does not provide an independent signal once BART, ferry ridership, and bridge crossings are included. To further test robustness and reduce the risk that results simply reflect post-pandemic recovery trends, we estimated an additional specification using log differences (month-over-month growth rates). This formulation shifts the analysis from long-term recovery levels to short-term fluctuations, isolating how changes in transit activity align with changes in visitation. The model has been updated through December 2025, bringing the total sample to 72 monthly observations. With the expanded dataset, the 70/30 chronological split yields a more representative holdout period, and the growth-rate model's out-of-sample predictions track observed visit changes more closely and consistently than earlier iterations. Across both the levels-based and growth-rate specifications, results remained consistent: BART, ferry ridership, and bridge crossings continued to show positive historical alignment with downtown visitation, reinforcing that these relationships persist beyond the initial recovery period and are not driven solely by shared upward trends. It is worth noting that the training period spans the high-volatility post-pandemic recovery phase, where month-to-month swings in both transit and visitation were larger and less predictable. As conditions settled after 2023, the relationships between transit and visitation became more stable, which is reflected in the model's stronger fit during the later holdout period. This pattern suggests the estimated elasticities are likely more reliable as a guide to behavior in the current, more stable environment than during the volatile recovery years from which much of the training data is drawn. The simulator applies historical elasticities estimated from the growth-rate model. These represent the estimated percentage point change in downtown visit growth associated with a 1% change in each transit mode, derived from the fitted model and consistent across a range of input values. Visit Website Details Presented by SF City Guides The 1985 Downtown Plan was one of the most important piece of red tape in San Francisco history. With accelerating downtown development, city officials laid down some ground rules: If you’re going to build here, you’re going to have to pay a little extra to cover the necessary infrastructure improvements. Oh — and you have to devote a portion of your project to a publicly accessible open space. Thus, Privately-Owned Public Open Spaces (POPOS) were born. Traverse through hidden parks, rooftop gardens, and views of nearly every building in San Francisco. Hear the real story of the Financial District while hanging out in some of the city’s most comfortable lookouts. Plus, discuss all the distinctive architecture that you’ll be face-to-face with. Whether you’re a commuter, resident, or first-time visitor, Market Street is often your first impression of downtown; we're here to ensure that experience is more consistent and supported every step of the way. Led by the Downtown San Francisco Partnership , the program builds on a successful pilot that deployed trained, uniformed ambassadors at key BART entrances during peak commute hours. In its expanded form, the program continues this proven model, deploying ambassadors at key transit sites to assist riders and visitors with directions, offer a visible and friendly presence, and help address street-level issues before they escalate. What makes this program effective is the collaborative force behind it. As a true public-private partnership, the Market Street Safe Corridor Program brings together a network of public agencies, community organizations, and private-sector leaders to manage the complexities of our downtown thoroughfare in real time. Private-Sector Investment: SF Downtown Development Corporation Pilot Program Support: Amazon, Google, Visa Public Safety Partners: SFPD, BART Police, SF Sheriff's Office, SFFD City Leadership: The Mayor's Office, Department of Emergency Management Community Partners: Union Square Alliance, Yerba Buena Partnership Project Timeline The Market Street Safe Corridor Program has moved quickly from pilot to proven model—building momentum at each stage: JULY 28 – SEPT 5, 2025 Program launches at Embarcadero Station, introducing ambassadors and coordinated operations SEPT 8 – OCT 24, 2025 Expansion to Montgomery Station, increasing reach and testing scalability SEPT – OCT 2025 Rider feedback and community input collected to refine model OCT – DEC 2025 Program extended through funding from the San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation (DDC) APR 1, 2026 Expansion launched to Powell Street BART, extending the Safe Corridor model to one of downtown's busiest transit hubs Pilot Program Impact In just a few short months, the pilot program delivered measurable results, including faster emergency response times and fewer 911 calls. Just as important as the numbers is how people feel. Riders consistently report a stronger sense of safety in and around stations where ambassadors are present and overwhelming support for the continuation of the program. It’s a clear signal: when there’s a consistent, human presence on the street, it changes the experience of downtown in a meaningful way. 70,000+ interactions between ambassadors and the public 53% fewer safety-related 911 calls 1,900+ riders assisted with directions 400+ wellness checks connecting people to support Pilot Program Case Study "Our transit stations are essential arteries that keep Downtown thriving, making it all the more meaningful to see a program we helped launch with overwhelming success expand Downtown." Robbie Silver President & CEO, Downtown SF Partnership Project Partners The Market Street Safe Corridor Program is a true public-private partnership led by the Downtown SF Partnership with investment from the San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation, Amazon, Google, and Visa. This coordinated effort combines city leadership from the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Emergency Management, public safety partnership from SFPD, BART Police, SFFD, the Sheriff’s Office, and community-based partners like Union Square Alliance and Yerba Buena Partnership. From the Gold Rush Era through today, the core of San Francisco has been the center of transportation in the Bay Area, making it fairly easy to get to and get around. Cable Cars It doesn’t get more San Francisco than riding the hills of San Francisco in a cable car. The City offers three separate cable car lines, one beginning at Market St and California St, and two beginning at the Powell St turnaround, that will give you some of the most striking views in SF. Cable Car Schedule BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Wanna beat the traffic? BART is one of the fastest, most dependable, and most affordable modes of transportation in downtown San Francisco. With stations at both San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport and 50 stations throughout the Bay Area, BART can almost always get you where you need to go. Clipper Cards (which can be used for both BART and Muni) are available at all BART stations or via the Clipper App. BART SCHEDULE MUNI Muni is SF’s transportation system that operates buses, trains, and cable cars throughout The City. You can spot MUNI stops in San Francisco with either their red-roofed stops, yellow painted street poles, or white paint on the street. Muni stops can be both underground or above ground, and can make for some pretty scenic rides. Clipper Cards and CityPASS San Francisco Pack are accepted as fare. MUNI SCHEDULE Caltrain Caltrain is a hi-speed rail system that runs between San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose, and Gilroy and connect with other transportation systems like BART and Muni. Caltrain is ideal for folks visiting from southern California or flying into the San Jose Airport, as its large trains only run up and down the peninsula. Caltrain fares are based on the number of Zones traveled through. You can find the Caltrain Zone map here. Like MUNI and BART, Caltrain also accepts Clipper Card. You can also snag a ticket at the ticket machine if that’s your jam, but fare at the ticket machine is more expensive than if you utilize a Clipper Card. CALTRAIN SCHEDULE San Francisco Bay Ferry You’re the captain now! Ferries are one of the most scenic ways to get to downtown San Francisco and feature routes from Alameda, Harbor Bay, Oakland, Richmond, South San Francisco, and Vallejo. Much like Caltrain, fare levels are broken down by zones, which can be found here. The most cost-effective payment method on the ferry is Clipper Card, which ranges from $1 to $9 depending on the length of your trip. Discounts for youth and seniors are also available. FERRY FARES Parking in Downtown SF There are a multitude of parking garages available in downtown San Francisco. When parking, be mindful of the hours of the garage, as many close in the evening hours. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled https://www.downtownsf.org/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
