In fact this program is one of the oldest programs of our club. Looking back at our history our first cruise out was to Sausalito to visit the San Francisco Yacht Club in May of 1892. This is according to author Woodruff C. Minor in his book On The Bay . To see details of each cruise out, visit the Cruise Schedule link below. We have 14 cruise outs planned this year. Each one is to a different destination. Each town and club we cruise in has a unique character. All members are welcome. If you can’t come by boat, feel free join us for a dinner at the event. If you would like to join, check out the Cruise Schedule below and sign up with the cruise leader. For additional questions, please contact Cruise Captain Robert Etchell . Whether you enjoy the excitement of racing competition, the adventure of cruising to beautiful venues in and around the bay, or just being with friends, old and new, enjoying a cocktail or dinner overlooking the water, a yacht club can provide you with a whole new level of experience. We feel being a member of Encinal Yacht Club provides all of this and more and invite you to consider applying for membership. Few yacht clubs can match our combination of location and club facility, beautiful pool and surroundings, and extensive docking facilities. It is a perfect lo-cation for formal events such as weddings and social events and a great place to relax and unwind. Our bar and lounge with a large outdoor deck is perfect for observing the multitude of on the water events. We are especially proud of our Award-Winning Junior Sailing Program where kids as young as 5 years old learn the fundamentals of sailing and the techniques of racing. Many have gone on to represent EYC in sailing regattas around the country. It's a wonderful opportunity for young people to grow up in a safe environment and learn valuable skills. Applying for membership is easy. Here's how it's done: Complete the Application for Membership (available in the EYC office). Obtain the signatures of three (3) Regular members who have been members for over one year. The Membership Committee is ready to assist you in this. Submit the application to the EYC office along with your initiation fee and the first month's dues. We will post your application in the main lobby for 10 days for member review. A person from the membership committee will meet personally with you so you can ask questions or request information. Finally, your application will be submitted to the Board of Directors for approval at the monthly Board Meeting. That's it. Please join us! Membership Classes Regular Membership As a "Regular" member you are eligible for all club benefits: extended credit in dining room, bar, and other services and merchandise supplied by the Club; full voting privileges; may be an elect-ed club officer; and have full privileges for spouse and children less than 21 years of age. If you decide to join, expect to be asked to volunteer. Running as many events as we do takes a lot of people helping. Come join the fun! PICYA Member-Club List EYC Club Members Membership in the Encinal Yacht Club includes the privilege of visiting other clubs that recognize EYC as a reciprocal organization. It is advisable that the members contact any club they plan to visit in advance to avoid disappointment upon arrival. Some clubs require a letter of introduction from the Commodore or General Manager of EYC and a current membership card. Please provide the name and address of the club you wish to visit and EYC will be happy to accommodate your request for an introductory letter. Visiting Guests The Encinal Yacht Club can accommodate members of legitimate yacht or boating clubs (generally, those having a permanent facility to meet, established bylaws, and elected officers) that in turn recognize EYC as a reciprocal. Membership in US Sailing or Pacific Inter- Club Yacht Association may be considered when there are questions about a club's eligibility. Proof of membership is required, and usage is subject to EYC’s house rules. Please note, our pool is restricted to Members and their accompanied guests. All guests are directly responsible for charges incurred. We do not allow charges to be billed to your home club. We accept Master Card and Visa. We do not except cash. With advance notice, the Encinal Yacht Club can accommodate groups or individuals from visiting clubs as may be appropriate to a cruising rendezvous’, race destination, or similar activity. As Encinal YC is approaching 132 years of operation, a review of our time-tested traditions and events may be of interest to both our new and longtime members. Club Management Our two-level management structure in itself is unique, not frequently seen in other clubs. We have the senior FLAG side of the administration that consists of the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Other Flag officers consist of the Port Captain, Fleet Captains, and our Staff Commodores. The Flag is responsible for all events having to do with the water, such as race organization and use of our dock facilities for events and interclub relations. The actual BUSINESS side of the club, all things pertaining to the running of the club and the clubhouse, is the responsibility of the President, Senior Vice President, Vice President and the Board of Directors. Senior Flag officers also serve on the Board of Directors. The hands-on work is done by members of the standing committees, in coordination with the General Manager. Members are encouraged to join in and help with the many details of running a successful club. The weekly Signal Flag and the monthly Soundings as well as the EYC online Website keep members in touch and aware of upcoming events. Annual Traditions & Events Like many yacht clubs, EYC has many events that we hold on an annual basis. They have become part of the fabric of our club and are the chief occasions when our members gather together to celebrate and play. They are the essence of what makes EYC a yacht club. New Year's Day The year starts with the Around the Island cruise with stops at Aeolian YC for chili and fizzes then on to the Ballena Bay YC for burgers before heading back down the estuary to Encinal for Clam Chowder. Since the tide is a big factor, many members go by car and enjoy the festivities to start the year. April • Opening Day on the Bay (sponsored by P.I.C.Y.A.) This tradition goes back to 1917 and is held on the last Sunday of April. A parade of decorated boats starts near the Golden Gate Bridge and circles the bay. EYC has been well represented and has had entries winning the best award several times. May • Mother’s Day at the Club Two seating’s will allow you to enjoy a wonderful brunch from our famous chief and celebrate with your family. May • Master Mariners Race Classic wooden yachts race around the bay and then sail down the estuary to tie up and party at Encinal. It is a grand party held on our great lawn with dancing up in the clubhouse. July • Fourth of July A signature event for EYC, this is a full day of celebration at the club with sailing, swimming, and barbecue, with games on the lawn for the kids and adults. Our junior sailors build floats and enter the famous Alameda 4th of July parade. July • Encinal Regatta Another annual event for EYC, this brings racers from all over the Bay down the Estuary to Encinal for an after-race party. Once again, the great lawn is a showcase for logo wear, drink tickets, drinks, music, and dancing. September • Junior Sailing Auction / Dinner Fundraiser A huge event in August and a fun party to help support our Jr. Sailor Program September • Wheel Chair Regatta This is our opportunity for “giving back”. It is an annual event where we provide a chance for disabled veterans to enjoy a cruise on the bay and a nice dinner on the lawn. The event (sponsored by PICYA) features boats from many clubs and the help of local Firefighters and the Coast Guard. October • Commodore’s Ball An annual formal event for most yacht clubs to honor the Commodore and President for a good year on the water. The event is electric as members don their finest and fill the club with a fine dinner and dancing. November • Change of Watch / Annual Meeting Outgoing Board members report on the state of the club for the year and the new Board members are introduced. Many yacht clubs celebrate this event with a black tie formal dinner. Bring your nautical wear and following reception is a little less formal but still more than street clothes blazers, slacks, ties, and bullion. Part of the protocol is the ceremony of the Eight Bells. November • Eight Bells Ceremony The ringing of eight bells is a short ceremony to memorialize the life of a departed member(s). The eight bells signify the end of a person’s watch on earth. Eight Bells and All is Well –A Sailors time for rest. The audience is asked to rise and observe a minute of silence in honor of the departed member(s). During the silence, eight bells are rung in pairs of two. Aboard ship, the day consists of six watches of four hours each. The time is told by the number of bells rung. One bell at the end of the first half hour, two bells at the end of one hour, three bells at l 1/2 hours. One bell is added each half hour until eight bells at the end of four hours denotes the end of the watch. November • PICYA Awards Dinner Held on the first Monday in November. Full formal nautical dress is the tradition. December • Lighted Yacht Parade We co-sponsor the parade with OYC to the enjoyment of thousands of people watching from both sides of the Estuary and Jack London Square. The parade is followed by a normally sold out dinner event at the club. December • Cruising Awards Dinner The first Friday in December holds the fun-loving celebration of the year by the Cruising Fleet. This is a vibrant event all held in good-humor and the award of the EYC Half-Fast trophy to the deserving recipient. December • Children’s Holiday Party The club shines in its Holiday Dress, the kids meet Santa, who arrives by boat, and enjoy their own buffet dinner while the adults do the same at bigger tables. The club usually has a modified operating schedule for two weeks so the staff can enjoy the holidays with their families and friends. New Year's Gala Formal dress is optional but does add to the grandeur of the evening. Dinner and dancing with good friends, champagne and chocolates, hats and whistles –it was a very good year. Reciprocal Privileges One of the nice things of belonging to EYC is enjoying reciprocal privileges at other yacht clubs around the bay, around the country and the world. HOWEVER, not every club acknowledges and extends these privileges to us. You must contact the club you intend to visit and see if they acknowledge reciprocity with Encinal. It may also be wise to obtain a letter of recommendation from our club manager confirming that you are a member in good standing at EYC. Proper Dress EYC is a rather casual dressing club. There are some events that are enhanced by upgrading ones apparel, such as the Commodore’s Ball, the Change of Watch and the New Year's Eve party, but many clubs are much more formal and have dress requirements, so if you are planning on visiting other clubs it is advisable to check about proper attire. Guidelines: The most universally accepted Yacht Club dress for men consists of: Blazer –black or blue-shirt white or blue shirt. Collar insignia, if used, only on white, non-button down. Slacks –Grey in winter, white in summer, Breton red or tan Tie –Black or navy blue four-in-hand, club tie or other conservative colors. Bow ties may be worn for special occasions at the Commodore’s option. Shoes: Black or white, or boat shoes. Name tags are placed on the right, club bullion over left breast pocket of coat. Historically the race has started in San Francisco Bay and had three finishes: Catalina (360nm), Santa Barbara (277nm), and Ventura (298nm). The Coastal Cup is now part of California Offshore Race Week which includes the Spinnaker Cup, the Coastal Cup, the Socal 300, and Socal 500. The Spinnaker Cup is a race from San Francisco to Monterey. The Coastal Cup race is from Monterey to Santa Barbara. The final race of the California Offshore Race Week is the Socal 300 with a start in Santa Barbara and the finish in San Diego. The race starts near the Golden Gate Bridge and ends in Southern California. The end of the race has moved around over the years to keep the race interesting. The Socal 500 race starts near the Golden Gate Bridge and ends in Southern California. Jack Frost Midwinter Series The Jack Frost Midwinter Series is sailed off the YRA Mark 10 over the Winter. The first race in the series is held in November with one race per month for 5 months. Race days will include 2 or 3 races per day depending on the weather's cooperation. The Jack Frost Midwinter Series is very popular with racers because we utilize inflatable marks to ensure an even line and square course. See the Race Schedule for dates and times. Friday Night Twilight Series The Friday Night Twilight Series is one of the EYC's most popular races. There is a Spring & Summer series, each with five races spaced approximately two weeks apart. The races are sailed in front of the club in the Alameda/Oakland Estuary. See the Race Schedule for dates and times. Small Boat Fleet Series The estuary is a perfect venue for sailing small boats. Mercurys and Millimeters are the current active fleets that enjoy the club's access to the estuary. If you’re fleet is interested in setting series dates for this incredible venue, please have your fleet captain contact the EYC Rear Commodore at [email protected] Other Races: The Encinal Yacht Club sponsors several additional races such as the Encinal Regatta, Commodore's Challenge, Gracie and George, Commodores Cup, as well as several Northern California and National events. The club was established by residents living in Alameda’s Gold Coast, on the south shore of the Island. The club’s unique management structure was set at the beginning, which designated separate Executive and Flag Officer functions. The club became famous for its moonlit parties, regattas, and cruising events. The club encouraged family participation from the very beginning. The first clubhouse was designed and built by Commodore Joseph A. Leonard, at the end of a 1,000-foot pier extending into the bay from the foot of Grand Street. The clubhouse was an elaborate Victorian design, the main floor was reserved for dancing and the second floor was the residence of the club manager. The San Francisco Chronicle declared the clubhouse to be the finest of its type on the entire Pacific Coast. Soon after the clubhouse was built the members set to establish a fleet of boats and an enviable social calendar. By 1892, the member’s boat fleet numbered about 30, with half of them being small-craft sailing canoes and the remainder being larger sloops and sailing yawls. There was one power boat a steam-powered launch. Social events included Opening Day each spring, where a parade of decorated yachts sailed past onlookers at the clubhouse, combined with swimming events and an elaborate party. Entertainment included music, dancing, Vaudeville acts, and poetry reading. A tradition of regattas was established, with member’s boats competing against those from the other yacht clubs on the bay. Members also cruised their boats as a group for overnight stays to different parts of the bay each season. Popular cruise destinations were San Leandro, Redwood City, and to yacht clubs including San Francisco YC and Corinthian YC. By the late 1890s, the country was in a recession and in response the club transformed to a small-boat club. Into the 1950s small boats including sailing canoes, Star boats, Snipes, and El Toros were the primary boats in the club fleet. Most of the boats were built in the workshops at the clubhouse. For a time, our meetings were held at Aeolian YC, and the membership even considered merging with Aeolian, except that EYC wanted a swimming pool and Aeolian did not. At the same time, Marina Village was being developed on the Estuary, and a deal was struck to build the new clubhouse on the other side of the island. Marina Village was being developed on the Estuary, and a deal was struck to build the new clubhouse on the other side of the island. This was not without controversy, as many of the members wanted the clubhouse near their homes on the south shore. The new clubhouse was built in 1960, complete with a full-size swimming pool and guest dock facilities. Traditions established more than 100 years ago are still the primary goal of our club family-oriented social events combined with boating Club History Membership Club Traditions Reciprocal Clubs Contact Info Encinal Sailing Foundation Signup Portal Encinal Yacht Club 1251 Pacific Marina, Alameda, CA 94501 Phone: (510)522-3272 © 2026 Encinal Yacht Club FED CSS Docks - Encinal Yacht Club Toggle Click to Edits 61º F Facebook Instagram About The Club Club History Membership Club Traditions Reciprocal Clubs Contact Info Encinal Sailing Foundation Signup Portal On The Water Race Program Race Schedule Paddle Club Cruise Program Women's Sailing Boat Share Program The Lipton Cup Information Club Hours Club Management Ships Store Facilities Soundings Menus Directions Calendar Youth Program About Classes Race Team Youth Calendar High School Coach's Corner Docks MENU Docks Cruising Into EYC's Crosson's Cove Encinal Yacht Club is a popular weekend destination for many local cruisers and hosts "Cruise Outs" by many local yacht clubs. Directions by Sea Vessels approaching from the Pacific Ocean Proceed with the requisite caution passing through the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Be advised that there is a channel separation zone in place for commercial shipping traffic, and that commercial traffic can be very heavy coming into the Port of Oakland. Upon entering the Bay, continue East leaving Alcatraz Island to port, gradually turning ESE to pass beneath the Oakland Bay Bridge. Currents can be very strong so be sure to maintain a safe distance from the bridge towers. Passing under the bridge, bear E again towards the entrance of the Oakland-Alameda Estuary. There is a day marker off the NW corner of Alameda Island, while the enormous cranes of the Port of Oakland can be seen just to the north entrance of the channel. Encinal YC is located approximately 3 miles from the entrance to the Estuary, just past Jack London Square on the South side of the channel. The Estuary is quite deep (approximately 35-40 feet) and vessels can hug the South side of the channel to avoid container ships entering and exiting the port of Oakland if necessary. The Club's guest dock is located directly in front of the clubhouse.
