Where have you faced opposition when seeking to do the work of God? How can you grow in expecting that opposition without becoming cynical or fearful? 2. The enemy often uses doubt to undermine God’s work in us. What specific lies or questions have you recently been tempted to believe about God, yourself, or what He’s called you to do? What would it look like to actively replace those lies with truth? 3. Nehemiah and the people responded to opposition first by going to God in prayer. What is your natural first reaction when you face opposition or frustration? How can you intentionally build a habit of turning to God before reacting? 4. The people trusted God and kept building with faithfulness. What is one area of obedience or “work” God has called you to that has become difficult because of opposition? What would persevering in faithfulness look like for you this week in that specific area? Our mission and hope is to lead people to love and live for Jesus in San Francisco, the Bay Area and the world. Nehemiah was willing to confront sin within the community of God instead of ignoring it or excusing it. Why is it often easier to point out problems “out there” in the world than to deal with selfishness, injustice, or lack of care within our own lives and relationships? 2. The wealthy leaders in this passage used a difficult situation for their own advantage instead of caring for people in need. When you look at your own life, what tends to compete with generosity? What would it look like for you to move beyond simply avoiding wrongdoing and actively pursuing generosity toward others? 3. Nehemiah responded with righteous anger, but he was also thoughtful and guided by God. How do you typically respond when you see sin, injustice, or wrongdoing? 4. Nehemiah says he refused to burden the people “because of the fear of God,” and the sermon reminded us that Jesus used His power not to take from people, but to give Himself for them. How would a deeper fear of God and a greater awareness of the grace of Jesus change the way you use your time, resources, influence, or position to serve others this week? And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." - Hebrews 12:1 How it all started... Planted in August of 1849 (making it the first protestant church in California) and spanning 22 pastors, 4 buildings and even one tent, First Baptist Church San Francisco has experienced a long and rich history over its 170-plus years of ministry to the City by the Bay. Since the beginning, FirstSF has been engaged in ongoing and impactful mission work both locally and around the world. Expanding the vision... When one of its previous buildings burned down in the 1906 earthquake, the congregation moved their facilities to what has now become the heart of the City. In all of this, God's providential hand has been evident in the way FirstSF has continued to be gospel-centered, Biblically-driven and mission-focused, even as cultural norms have shifted over time. Where we are headed... No doubt, God has worked powerfully in the past of this church and we give thanks for the men and women of faith who laid the foundation on which we build. Today, we look forward with faith, believing that the best years of this church's story are ahead. We believe God is not done in San Francisco. We have an active role as we walk with Christ, praying, believing and living for the Kingdom of God and His glory in our city. FirstKIDS | Birth - 5th Grades Sunday Mornings, Other Events We are currently working through the Gospel Project by Lifeway, a biblically sound curriculum that is age-appropriate and relevant to the lives of kids. Our vision at firstKIDS is to partner with families in the discipleship of their children. FirstYouth | 6th - 12th Grades Sunday Mornings, First Fridays, Other Events Our Youth Ministry is committed to partnering with families to help our Youth develop lifelong faith in Christ. We seek to accomplish this in three ways: 1) by discipling teens in the Gospel, 2) doing so within the context of the home and church community, and 3) sending them out to their schools and the nations. College & Young Professionals (YPs) Tuesdays @ 7PM, Holiday Events, Retreats, Other Events We are a multicultural group of college and young professionals. We believe the Bible is the guide for our lives and that a relationship with God is the most important aspect of our lives. We also put great importance and value in consistent involvement with a community of other followers of Christ. We have various events throughout the year such as Bible Study, retreats, lunches and gatherings. "Breathe” Accessibility Ministry Sunday Mornings , Respite Events The vision of this ministry is to identify and break down barriers that keep individuals with disabilities and their families from being able to fully participate in the life of the church. It is our prayer that everyone in our church would understand that the Body of Christ includes those who don't talk, walk, think, feel, see, or hear the way other parts do. Community Groups Time & Location Varies, Link Below For List The mission of our Community Groups is to provide a space for deeper community, growth in Christ, and service and mission opportunities. Our Community Groups are named as such for the various communities they meet and exist within our City. Our hope is that through these groups, every member would grow in unity with others in the church, have a space to deepen their understanding and application of the Gospel, and serve alongside one another for greater mission and outreach to our City. community groups list Urban Ministry Outreach 4th Saturday of Every Month Are you interested in serving our community in word and deed? First Impressions Team (F.I.T) Sunday Mornings A warm, welcoming environment on Sunday morning helps set the tone for our worship experience. This team shapes a person’s first impression of our church by providing a friendly welcome, helpful directions and connections to our church. As well, we serve coffee before each week’s worship celebration. This is a generous way to serve and meet newcomers and to enjoy casual conversation. Worship Team Wednesdays @ 7PM , Sunday Mornings, Special Services At FirstSF, we believe every aspect of worship should be accessible to all, participated in by all, and glorifying to God above all. To that end we continue to champion the arts in our city and encourage musicians, artists, and singers from within our membership to lead in worship. Production Team Wednesdays @ 7PM , Sunday Mornings, Special Services In this technology age, there is a place to serve FirstSF through audio/visual production and technology. The church is a place where we get to serve the body of Christ together! There are needs we have that could use your gifts and skill set to be the hands and feet of Jesus: whether that is greeting someone on a Sunday morning, sitting and sharing truth with a youth student, or serving alongside our partners near and far. We truly believe serving is a vital role in following the way of Jesus. "Two years ago, I volunteered for Respite . I was nervous and wondered if my participation would make a difference. But God knew what He was doing ... Sharing God’s spirit and laughter with a person with special needs is far more awesome than I ever expected." "I love building relationships with our students from around the world and getting to share English and Christ with them. To see their smile when they are welcomed to class each week makes me so happy!" "The Lord used the Preschool Ministry to plant seeds into my little girl's heart and at the age of 5 she asked Jesus into her heart!" Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me." John 14:6 (ESV) Jesus made this statement to his disciples (his followers), so that they knew the only way to be in relationship with God was through Him. Why Jesus? Because He is God's Son and the only person who lived a sinless life. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 (ESV) Why did Jesus die? Romans 3:23 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This means that we were all born with sin, and we all personally choose to sin, and our sin separates us from God. Not only that, because of our sin, we all deserve death and separation from God. Knowing that the punishment for our sins could not be removed from us by doing good deeds, God had a plan. He sent Jesus to earth to live a perfect, sinless life and to sacrifice his life on a cross for our sins. Not only that, after Jesus died, he rose three days later from the grave, showing that He had power over life and death. WHAT MUST I DO TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN? First, we must repent of (turn from) our sinfulness. Confess your sin/sins to God recognizing your need of a Savior. Romans 10:9 (ESV) says, "if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." In the book of Acts, a jailer asked some church leaders, "what must I do to be saved?" To which they replied, "believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved," Acts 16:30-31 (ESV). And this is the same method for us today! Simply put, becoming a Christian means repenting of (or confessing) your sin and believing in Jesus (His life, death, and resurrection) and surrendering your life to him as Lord. Jesus and Jesus alone saves us. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ. Have you repented of your sin and believed in Jesus? If so, please let us know. We'd like to help you take some next steps . next steps WEEKLY SERVICES @ 10:30AM In Person In Our Sanctuary Livestream Available -Available On Homepage And App - FirstSF YouTube Channel CONTACT US Address: 22 Waller St, San Francisco, CA 94102 Phone: (415) 863-3382 Email:

Hebrews 10:24-25 Community Groups are designed to foster true Biblical community and are a great way to build real and lasting relationships with others in the FirstSF church family. Community Groups meet in homes throughout the week at various times and locations across the City and Bay Area. Each group is unique, with some designed for people in specific demographic categories and others more diverse in their makeup. While each group may look different, every group will include elements of fellowship, prayer and Bible study. We believe that participating in Community Groups is important to the unity, life and ministry of our church as well as the spiritual maturity of every person. You are encouraged to explore and visit more than one group until you find the one that is right for you! It is through these groups that FirstSF becomes smaller and more personal as it grows larger, impacting more lives in San Francisco! We look forward to growing and doing life with YOU in a Community Group soon!
