Turn your goals into action sooner. FPU guarantees graduation within four years in the traditional undergraduate areas of study.  We commit to providing the courses, advising, instruction and preparation . If you fulfill your responsibilities and are unable to graduate in four years, you will receive the needed courses the following semester at no cost in tuition or fees. Incoming Requirements This guarantee is limited to basic graduation requirements of 120 minimum units including general education, upper-level and elective courses sufficient for a single major with no minor. Where options between courses are available, students are not guaranteed their first choice. This guarantee does not apply to “fifth-year” programs (teacher education credential requirements) or minimum units beyond graduation requirements (CPA qualifications, etc.) beyond the basic four-year bachelor’s degree. The guarantee does not apply to transfer students or to FPU's degree completion programs. Students not able to register for the courses needed within four years must complete the free course(s) within two terms of the end of four years (e.g. a summer and fall for those completing four years in the spring; or spring and summer for those completing four years in the fall). The four-year period may be extended for students required to leave the university for up to one year (see the Leave of Absence section) for medical, military or personal reasons. Student Responsibilities To qualify for the guarantee students must: Meet with your mentor during the fall semester of the freshman year. Finalize a major and begin prerequisite or lower-division major courses by the second semester of the freshman year and keep that major until graduation. Complete at least 32 units per year (average 16 per semester) with passing grades in each course. Maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA and remain in good standing behaviorally with the university. Meet with the mentor each semester for advising before registration opens and take the courses approved by the adviser/mentor that complete general-education and major requirements, in the appropriate sequence and as they become available. Register within the first week of registration every semester to gain a spot in the classes needed. Notify mentor if unable to register for an approved course so that an alternative plan can be made. Apply for financial aid and submit required documents by appropriate deadlines. Keep student account up-to-date. (Accounts not up-to-date may be placed on hold, preventing registration for courses.) Complete required courses successfully (see Academic Policies section for minimum acceptable grades) without dropping required or approved courses during a semester. The theological witness statement expresses two consistent aims of Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary. First, these words articulate our understanding of what the Mennonite Brethren [MB] church believes. Second, these words describe the direction in which we, as teachers and theologians in the church, seek to lead the MB conference. The theological statement condenses our MB confession of faith into a single sentence. We use the terms “biblical theology,” "anabaptist" and “evangelical” to describe our faith because these words also grow out of our history. Because MBs have been shaped by other movements that we have found compatible, a brief review of our story is helpful in understanding the context for such words as “evangelical” and “anabaptist.” We Mennonite Brethren have always considered ourselves a  biblical  people. While at times we use such statements as the Apostles' Creed, we describe ourselves as confessional rather than creedal. That is, we confess that we seek to believe, study and obey the Bible as our primary authority. Our confession of faith is a statement that describes how our reading of the Bible (as God’s inspired Word) connects us to the world in which we give witness. As a biblical people, we have instinctively tried to resolve theological and ethical questions by asking, “What does the Bible say?” or “How do we interpret Scripture as our authority for today?” We speak of a  biblical theology  in contrast to a systematic philosophical theology. We make this distinction because we seek always to be guided more by the Bible than by a particular theological system—be that systematic, evangelical or even Anabaptist. Our norm should always be the Bible. We use the word theology because we recognize that we need to read the whole Bible—to avoid lifting any single verse as a proof text that silences other biblical words. At the same time we recognize the priority of Jesus' teaching. We have tended to use the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) as our first lens. We read the Gospels through the lens of the Sermon, the rest of the NT through the lens of the Gospels, and the OT through the lens of the NT. The term theology points to the need for interpretation. We seek to interpret the Bible within a world-wide community of faith under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This biblical faith aims to rekindle the dynamic of the early church. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we gather to study the Word together. As the early church discerned God’s will together at the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15, we pursue a community hermeneutic. The early church gathered around and evaluated the apostolic testimony of Paul, Barnabas and Peter; so also we gather around the biblical text to discern together how its authority guides our lives. We seek to be a biblical people, but we recognize that our biblical interpretation has always been influenced by a range of theological currents. When our church formed in 1860, the first members expressed their agreement with Menno Simons. They were also strongly influenced by the Lutheran pietist movement with its emphasis on (1) group Bible study, (2) warm Spirit-filled faith growing out of personal conversion, (3) thoughtful faith nurtured by disciplined study, and (4) evangelistic witness. MBs also were open to influences from the larger evangelical church, especially Baptists who encouraged world missions and helped the young MB church develop its congregational polity. This openness to other evangelical churches continued in North America in the twentieth century and still characterizes MBs today. Beth Hannah encourages FPU grads to “walk on and walk steady.” Michael Hammond May 14, 2026, 10:01 am More than 800 Fresno Pacific University graduates were invited to celebrate their current rite of passage while also being reminded to continue moving forward at commencement on May 9, 2026. While speaking to graduates, commencement speaker Rev. Beth Hannah equated life to a series of summits experienced during a mountain climb. “I want to encourage you in the climb you’ve accomplished,” Hannah said, “and the climb still ahead.” Hannah spoke during both the undergraduate and graduate ceremonies in Selland Arena in downtown Fresno. A total of 854 students were eligible to graduate, of which 458 were undergraduate students and 396 were graduate students. Over 12,000 attendees joined the graduates in person, while another 4,500 watched online.  Three parts to a rite of passage According to Hannah, every rite of passage in life is made up of three parts: the ending, the in-between and the new beginning.  Ending By the very nature of an ending, things are left behind. Hannah recognized that endings can cause a range of emotions, from nostalgia to grief, and in the case of the graduates, likely a good deal of relief. “Feel all the feels,” Hannah said, “because for a new thing to begin, something else must end.” Endings, however, are actually the beginning of the transition process. “You must let go in order to move forward,” she said. In-between The in-between is a period of uncertainty and waiting. As students sat and listened, they had already finished their coursework and yet still had not received their diplomas. They were no longer students, but not yet graduates. “I know some of you are thinking, ‘The faster she finishes this speech, the faster we’ll graduate,’” Hannah said to laughs. But there is value in waiting. “The most important changes of your life happen during the in-between,” Hannah said. “So wait well.” New beginning Even after a rite of passage is completed, it doesn’t mark the final end, but the beginning of a new journey. “The completion of your rite of passage is to step forward,” Hannah said.  Hannah also reminded students that they don’t face this journey by themselves. “We do not reach summits alone,” she said. “We do not achieve our greatest moments without support. Never forget; God is a guide who will never fail.” As FPU graduates reached their current summit, they were reminded to look and see the help that God and others have given them. As they begin a new journey, Hannah encouraged them to look for others they could help along the way. “The question is not just what you will achieve,” she said. “Will you use your life to help others reach their summits too?” Ultimately, graduates were encouraged to keep moving forward. “Do not shy away from the journey. God is with you. Release what has been. End well. Wait gratefully in the in-between.
