The documentary has been instrumental in educating the public about the impacts to our beaches and environment from single-use cigarette filters and plastics used in our daily lives. The incredible news is that the Cigarette Surfboard’s campaign has resulted in the ban of single-use cigarette filters in Santa Cruz County. On August 28, 2025 the City of Capitola became the third jurisdiction in Santa Cruz County to ban (with a unanimous vote) the sale of single-use cigarette filters . Now all three ordinances – from the County of Santa Cruz, the City of Santa Cruz, and the City of Capitola – will go into effect in 2027. This is monumental in the fight against Big Tobacco and the Cigarette Surfboard’s campaign for a clean ocean and coastline in Santa Cruz and around the world. According to the Cigarette Surfboard, other cities and counties are excited to follow suit – the momentum is truly just beginning. Funds for Eye Clinic in Nubri Valley Himalayan Region of Nepal $14,000 to the Delek Children’s Foundation to greatly expand the eye care services that were provided in 2024. This grant was significant in many ways. First, it was FFI’s largest grant since its formation in 1991. Second, the public health impact was enormous. 126 villagers were screened and 72 cataract surgeries were performed. 250 warm jackets and pants were provided to students along with 125 pairs of shoes and school supplies. 200 reading glasses and eye medicines were given to the locals. Funds for Eye Care for Students Nepal $3,813 to the Charity Health Foundation (CHF) to provide essential eye care and treatment in the far western region of Nepal where access to quality eye care and screening services Is limited Since its inception in 2016 under the leadership of senior eye specialist Dr. Bidya Prasad Pant, CHF has been committed to delivering high-quality, free eye care services, including comprehensive eye examinations, surgical interventions, distributing reading glasses, eye medicines and conducting the School Health Program. By continuing to fund CHF, FF’s grant is an important step in the preservation of eye health, prevention of vision impairment, and improvement of the quality of life among children with secondary benefits of improving children’s academic performance and their future professional opportunities. The program examined 5,026 students in 44 schools. 396 refractive students were identified with refractive errors, 819 students received necessary medications, while 327 students were provided with corrective eye glasses. Public Interest Litigation – Prakash Mani Sharma Academy for Public Interest Law Nepal $13,000 to fund public interest/environmental litigation in Nepal including the second year of a legal Fellowship program to mentor some of the smartest law students who passed their legal exams. This project is working to promote the next generation of public interest lawyers to work on cases to protect the environment, culture, consumers and the poorest of the poor in Nepal. FFI has been supporting public interest litigation in Nepal for decades as Prakash Mani Sharma and his staff continue to stop environmentally destructive projects such as the largest airport proposal in Asia that would have destroyed millions of trees and habitat. Current projects include drafting a petition to stop the Nagmati Dam proposed to be built in a National Park that would destroy large forest acreage, threaten biodiversity, disrupt wildlife and create risk of public safety, working to strengthen existing laws to limit single use plastics, working to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling requiring the closure or relocation of polluting industries by the World Heritage site where the Buddha was born and prohibiting new industries within a 15 km area of the heritage site. The Academy is also working on finding a mechanism for the courts to recognize that attorneys who confer a significant public benefit should be fairly compensated for their work. In a recent case, the Supreme Court issued an order so that government funds that were allocated to control and reduce air pollution not be diverted and misused for other purposes but used for its designated purpose of protecting the environment. Support to Elementary School in Basa Nepal $5,000 to the Basa Foundation to provide funding for two school teachers, supplies and projectors in the small Himalayan village in Basa, Nepal. $4,000 went to provide salaries to two full time teachers for 13 months at the base salary of $150 per month, $800 for purchase of several classroom projectors and $200 for school supplies. Assistance to Schools Nicaragua $1,500 to Lacross the Nations to provide scholarships, academic materials and mentorship support to 42 student athletes in Nicaragua who are unable to attend school because their families cannot afford the cost of basic school supplies. Lacross the Nations was founded in 2017 to remedy this problem. This small grant accounted for 31% of the program costs in 2025 and helped purchase school uniforms, shoes and sneakers, school supplies and tuition assistance at a cost of just $114 per student. Along with this support has come improved academic progress by the students. Providing Safe Drinking Water Tanzania $4,700 to Ali Olishan to continue his work in bringing water to remote schools in Tanzania. Located within 50 km of Arusha in a very rural and dusty area, the Lomolok School previously relied on fluoride-heavy mud water and a tarp-based catchment system, posing health risks to students and staff. Following the successful delivery of a large water tank in March 2024 funded by FFI, Ali working with the community installed two additional 5,000-liter tanks and a catchment base to ensure a reliable and safe water supply for up to 2,000 children and staff. Providing Safe Drinking Water in Chenjeni Kenya $4,200 to Harambee Centre who have been doing community work in rural Kenyan villages since 1994. The purpose of this project is to provide clean and safe drinking water for at least 30,000 people in the Chenjeni village near Chwele in Kenya and to reduce incidences of water-borne diseases where at least 80% of diseases are related to contaminated water. The project also serves to benefit young girls who would ordinarily spend an inordinate amount of time fetching water from many miles away from home that is often contaminated. With prior funding from FFI in the amount of $4,400, water drilling and piping was completed in August, 2024. The 2025 funding was to purchase and install a pump with a solar power system to pump water from 155 meters deep. Planting Organic Vegetables to Provide Income to Villagers and Planting Trees to Combat Climate Change Myanmar $6,000 to purchase and plant organic vegetables so that village families in Mingun and Mandalay regions in Myanmar can grow healthy food and provide income by selling their produce in the market. The village teams also planted 150 additional trees to battle skyrocketing temperatures in the country. Life is extremely difficult in Myanmar due to on-going military attacks on the local people. FFI has supported this project since 2018.
