Here’s what to expect during your visit: Once you are checked in, one of our team members will direct you into an exam room and weigh your pet. Your veterinarian will meet with you to gather information about your pet’s health. Your veterinarian will provide a thorough examination of your pet and discuss their recommendations. Our veterinarians will work with you to come up with the appropriate diagnostic and treatment plan. When your veterinary consultation is complete, you may be asked to remain in the exam room or return to the reception area while your pet is provided medical care. Any recommended diagnostic tests (e.g., blood work or X-rays) and/or treatments are usually performed in our treatment room. At the completion of your visit, one of our team members will handle billing for all services rendered using one of our hand-held payment terminals. Our team can even complete the payment process with you in the exam room. If you need to make any future appointments for your pet, any of our caring team members will work with you directly to book future services. Depending on the reason for your visit, you may expect a follow-up call from your veterinarian or one of our patient-care team members to get an update on how your pet is doing after their visit. We will do our best to make sure you are brought into an exam room as soon as we have one available. Our goal is to make sure all of our patients are seen on time, but there may be times when the occasional unexpected delay occurs. It may be due to an emergency or because we are providing care for a patient that needs a little more time. We appreciate your understanding when a doctor is delayed. We hope you enjoy your visit and the service we provide! Pet feeling blue? Try our pet health checker. Learn More OUR LOCATION Contact Us Phone: (925) 938-8010 E-mail:

At our practice, we try to see as many emergency or same-day appointments as our staff and hospital can handle, but there will be times when we need to refer a patient to our local emergency hospitals for care. We are fortunate that these hospitals also have board-certified specialists on staff in Dentistry, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Orthopedics, Oncology, and Homeopathic Medicine to name just a few! This allows us to refer our clients to experts in their field for more specialized diagnostics or care outside the scope of our practice. Meet the Veterinarians and Team of Geary Veterinary Hospital in Walnut Creek. We’re pleased to provide exceptional veterinary care for your pets. Please call us at (925)-938-8010 to speak to one of our caring staff members. Dr. Gillian Hamilton Owner Dr. Hamilton graduated from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology (1996) and from Emory University Rollins School of Public Health with a MPH in Epidemiology (2000). Before deciding to become a veterinarian, Dr. Hamilton worked as an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, and then as an infectious disease epidemiologist for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in Boston. She moved to California in 2003, where she eventually attended UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and met Dr. Weiss. After graduating in 2008, Dr. Hamilton completed a rotating internship at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists and then joined the team at Geary Veterinary Hospital, where she stayed for five years before moving to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. She later returned to California to be closer to family and pursue a future as a business owner. Dr. Hamilton understands the unique human-animal bond, and in her efforts to provide the best possible care for each individual, she works hard to get to know every client and patient. This new chapter in Dr. Hamilton’s life is especially exciting because she loves being back in California and embracing the challenges of small-business ownership with Dr. Weiss. In Dr. Hamilton’s words: “I’m grateful to Dr. Bjork, who established Geary Veterinary Hospital back in 1979, served so many families and pets for nearly 40 years, and then made plans to hand off the business to us as he eases toward eventual retirement. Dr. Bjork’s leadership has been invaluable, and I look forward to helping build on Geary’s success while taking the business into the future.” Dr. Hamilton lives in Orinda with her husband and their son, as well as a cat named Flair and a rescue German Shepherd called Roxy. Clients of Geary may have seen her son around the office, where he enjoys chatting with clients and staff, shredding documents, and learning about the business. Dr. Erica Weiss Owner Dr. Erica Weiss-Laroche graduated from Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA) in 1998 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology. After college she worked in research, analyzing human and veterinary pharmaceuticals and biomedical devices. Dr. Weiss moved to California in 2002, and in 2008 graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Four years later, she completed a residency in Laboratory Animal Medicine at UC Davis. She began working with Dr. Bjork in 2015 when Dr. Hamilton moved to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Dr. Weiss lives in Vallejo with her husband, who is a physician in Occupational Medicine. He also coaches sled hockey, an adaptive sport for children with disabilities, for the Bay Area Outreach Program (BORP). Dr. Weiss and her husband have a young son, who plays hockey and soccer—and loves scary movies. The family has four Devon Rex cats named Elsa, Ana, Giacomo, and Scooter. Dr. Weiss’s dream was to own a veterinary practice, and she was thrilled to partner with Dr. Gillian Hamilton whom she met at UC Davis. “Gillian and I got to know each other on our very first day of vet school. I sat down next to her, and we’ve been friends ever since! We feel so fortunate to have gone from friends and study partners to co-owners of a well-established veterinary practice, and we look forward to the journey ahead.” Dr. Weiss has worked with a variety of animal species including cats, dogs, guinea pigs, mice and rats, rabbits, pigs, and sheep. Veterinarians Dr. David Bjork Dr. Bjork has officially retired as of December 2025. We are so grateful for the clinic he built and entrusting us, Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Weiss, to continue his legacy. He has been apart of the community at Geary for over 45 years and a veterinarian for 57 years. We love that generations of families still come to Geary and it is because of what he started. Thank you for all you have done for us as your staff and the community! Enjoy retirement! We hope there is a lot of skiing in your future. Dr. Virginia Loo Veterinarian Dr. Virginia Loo received her D.V.M. Degree in 2012 from the University of California at Davis, a Masters in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999, and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia in 1997. Before entering Vet school, she taught organic chemistry at Mills College for 8 years. In addition to working at Geary Veterinary Hospital, she also does relief work at Joy Bound Shelter in Walnut Creek. Dr. Loo enjoys reading mystery novels, baking, knitting and enjoying the company of her three cats; Molly, Stoopy, and Stella. Dr. Nathalie Petersen Veterinarian Dr. Petersen grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent her summers in rural Michigan, where she developed a love for animals and nature. Her mother (a doctor) encouraged her daughter to choose a career that would allow her to find joy in her work. It only made sense to pursue her dreams of becoming a veterinarian! She graduated from Michigan State University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Biology and Zoology. She received her DVM from Louisiana State University in 2011 and has lived in the Bay Area since 2018. Dr. Petersen appreciates the variety that being a general practitioner brings. She is a Contra Costa Veterinary Medical Association board member and is Fear Free and PennHip certified. At Geary, she looks forward to forming lasting relationships with both the clients and their pets throughout every life stage. Outside of work, Dr. Petersen loves spending time with her long-term boyfriend and their three terriers: Maverick, Biff, and Ziggy Stringcheese. Her favorite activities include hiking, running, reading, and traveling. Dr. Mary Ann Wickes Veterinarian Dr. Wickes has been a veterinarian at Geary Veterinary Hospital since 2000. She received her veterinary degree from Cornell University in New York and returned to California for an internship at Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital. She then spent five years in emergency medicine in the East Bay, returning to daytime practice after she started a family. Dr. Wickes and her husband, whom she met at Heather Farm swimming pool, live in Walnut Creek and have three grown children and two young grandchildren (so far). The entire family has been involved with competitive swimming and/or triathlons for many years. Today, Mary Ann is still a member of the Walnut Creek Masters swim team, along with their two local children. Dean and son Greg also coach the UC Berkeley triathlon team. Getting to know our clients and helping their pets in the best way I can is what makes my career fun and rewarding every day.” Dr. Kenichiro Yoshida Veterinarian Dr. Yoshida grew up in Castroville, California—the artichoke capital of the world!—and started his training as a veterinary assistant throughout his high school and undergrad years. He graduated from CSU Fresno with a Bachelor’s of Science degree, focusing on pre-veterinary medicine. He then worked for several years in biomedical research, where he first met Dr. Weiss. We understand that finances are a huge consideration for our clients when deciding on the expensive diagnostics or treatments for their pet. Pet insurance may be a great option for you, and we highly recommend considering insurance to help with the costs of caring for your precious pet family member. Pet insurance companies offer many types of plans that often are customizable. The payments and deductibles vary depending on the plan you choose. You may choose to have only emergencies covered or opt for a more comprehensive plan that provides a larger reimbursement and has higher premiums. We work closely with four wonderful rescues: Golden State Greyhound Adoption (GSGA), Nor Cal Beagle Rescue, Purebreds Plus, and 3R Rescue. Golden State Greyhound Adoption (GSGA) Golden State Greyhound Adoption (GSGA) GSGA is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that places retired racing greyhounds in adoptive homes in Northern California. The greyhounds are ex-racers that come primarily from the Florida racetracks. GSGA was established in 2002 and is one of the largest rescue groups in Northern California. Stuart and Barbara Homer started coming to Geary Veterinary Hospital in 2004. With all the dogs coming to them and new adopters wondering who to use as their veterinarian, Stu and Barbara knew they had to do some research. They wanted to find someone who would listen and who was trustworthy. They found Geary Veterinary Hospital and the rest is history. On their first meeting with Dr. Bjork, he agreed to work with this organization and offered rescue rates on new dogs. The staff at Geary found ex-racers to be wonderful, friendly dogs. Stu and Barbara moved all their personal pets to Dr. Bjork and started recommending Geary to their adopters. Ever since both local adopters and those far away come all the way to Geary for veterinary care. Golden State Greyhound has adopted over 1,900 dogs and most have come through Geary Veterinary Hospital. In the words of GSGA: “We have all stayed with Geary because we trust they will do what is necessary for our pets’ care. It is important to work with veterinarians who listen and do research to find solutions, and that is what the vets at Geary do. The GSGA family is thrilled that Dr. Weiss and Dr. Hamilton are the new owners and are keeping the personal touch we value at Geary. We know the care that our dogs have received in the past will continue under their ownership.” Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue (PPCR) Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue (PPCR) PPCR is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, socialization and rehoming of purebred and other exceptional cats and kittens into permanent homes. These breeds are often found in hoarding situations, kitten mills, or shelters. This rescue group has found homes for hundreds of cats coming from these situations. Lee and Eric Kempter have been coming to Geary Veterinary Hospital since 1991. Lee wanted to foster cats, mostly Persian and Himalayans, and came upon PPCR. She started fostering with this group and spoke with Dr. Bjork about bringing the fosters and her pets to Geary. Lee brought her her beautiful Persian, Minxy, to Dr. Hamilton in 2011. Dr. Weiss had the privilege of seeing Minxy until the end of her life in 2015. At Geary, we all loved Minxy and she holds a special place in our hearts. Our staff has fostered many cats and kittens for this organization. We even have staff members who have adopted cats from them! We provide health checks, spays, and neuters prior to adoption. 3R Rescue 3R Rescue 3R Rescue was founded in 2012 by Linda Palagi Lynn and Jack Lynn in Winters, CA. Both are longtime animal lovers, rescue advocates and supporters of other successful rescue organizations. Over the last 25 years, Linda and Jack have personally rescued and rehabilitated dogs, cats, chickens, horses and other animals, even bringing them into their home. Most of the animals they rescue come from places of abandonment, neglect or abuse. Despite mistreatment, many of them still had loving dispositions and just needed a second chance. Linda and Jack have established a wonderful network of volunteers, behaviorists, and veterinarians who share a passion for their mission and help rehabilitate these animals and get them into loving homes. Dr. Weiss met Linda many years ago when working in the biomedical field. Their paths crossed again in 2016 when Dr. Weiss was trying to find a home for a beagle and she learned about 3R Rescue and Linda’s work there. In 2018, Geary Veterinary Hospital began working with 3R Rescue. Dr. Weiss has spayed, neutered and performed dental cleanings on many dogs for them. The staff at Geary helped raise money and supplies for animals that fell victim to the Solano Fires in 2017. Our wonderful clients donated money and supplies to 3R to help the animals rescued during the fires. We are happy to provide health-care services to their rescues before adoption. Pet feeling blue?
