Register × Founders HandsOn Bay Area Founders In 1988, three friends from Stanford had a powerful idea - engage professionals in volunteer service by making it accessible to people with busy lives. With this idea, Community Impact was born. A couple of years later another group of friends created Hands On San Francisco with the same premise. By 2004, each organization was thriving and providing much needed volunteer activation to the Bay Area and they agreed that they could do even more together. The merger created HandsOn Bay Area. Today, HandsOn Bay Area continues with the goal of making volunteering a valuable response to the needs of the community. We thank our founders for their vision and tenacity and we look forward to many more years of service to the Bay Area. Not a member? Register × CommUNITY Calendar FAQ How do I sign up a group? If your group is interested in volunteering on an ongoing basis, we recommend that each group member makes an individual account. This saves you time and helps our nonprofit partners know how many volunteers to expect.  If your group is interested in a project please email [email protected] . For a one-time $75 group sign up fee, we can assist you and your team to reserve available slots . If the project on the calendar can accommodate the number of volunteers you have, then you can avoid the group sign up fee by having each volunteer log on and create a calendar account and sign up for the project! If you have any additional questions, you may e-mail [email protected] How can children volunteer? Do they need an account? We love when kids and teenagers get involved and give back!  All volunteers over the age of 13 should create an account. This allows us to have a more accurate headcount and allows you to track your volunteer hours for future applications and scholarships! Next, use our Community Calendar to search for projects where you or your child meets the age requirement.  If a parent or guardian is required to attend with the minor, they will not be able to sign-up under their own account. A parent can sign them up by providing their name, birthdate, and registered email in the sign-up confirmation page. We will be sure to sign you up!  If you are 13 or younger, a parent can sign you up as a guest on the sign-up confirmation page. How do I get proof that I've volunteered? For quick reference of all your volunteer hours, log in to your HandsOn Bay Area account, click on “My Account” and you will see your volunteer history listed. Please note that attendance is done manually, so allow Project Leaders at least 1 week to complete your verifications. Depending on your need, you can also get proof of your service in the following ways: If you need your hours to be signed off on a log, our Project Leader can sign a volunteer hours form for your school or court-ordered service at the project site. Please note that this could take 2 - 3 weeks for approval.  If you need a verification letter with our letterhead, contact us ONLY after you've completed your hours and we can send you the letter. Please allow 2 - 3 weeks for all requests. If you need your hours verified sooner, we recommend having your volunteer hour sheet signed directly by the nonprofit partner. Once it's signed, you can email us the verification so we can begin processing your hours. Please use this log and email to [email protected]   I need to cancel. What should I do? It's OK, we won't hold it against you. Please make sure to remove yourself from the project as soon as you know, so you leave space for another volunteer to step in. Log in to HandsOn Bay Area and click on "My Account." Find the project you cannot attend and click “Remove Me.” If it's the day of the project, please also e-mail, call or text your Project Leader so they know not to expect you. How do I become a Project Leader? Project Leaders help us coordinate all of the volunteer opportunities on our Calendar. To become a Project Leader, you must attend at least three HandsOn Bay Area projects. You can then fill out our Project Leader Application. For more information, visit our Project Leader page . How do I volunteer with my co-workers? HandsOn Bay Area has many ways to volunteer with your company: Custom volunteering events for your team. We’re grateful for the interest and support this program has received and look forward to sharing any future updates via our newsletter. While this program won’t be moving forward next summer, we’re actively exploring other opportunities to expand our youth offerings on our CommUnity Calendar. We welcome sponsorships that will assist in relaunching our program in the future to ensure Bay Area  youth have access to HandsOn Tomorrow. For any sponsorship-related questions, please contact Lou Reda at [email protected].   HandsOn Tomorrow is a volunteering enrichment program aimed at developing high school students’ community engagement, communication, and project management skills. During this 2-week summer program, students experience up to 40 volunteer hours doing purpose-driven work with local organizations; focus areas may include houselessness, environmental conservation, food insecurity, etc. In addition to on-the-ground experience and team-based workshops, HandsOn Tomorrow will provide students the resources to confidently produce their own service event from scratch! 2024 HandsOn Tomorrow Project Example In the 2024 Palo Alto Cohort, students partnered with East Palo Alto’s Ecumenical Hunger Program to support their Food Bank and Clothing Closet initiatives. Students assembled 130 produce boxes and 220 dry-good boxes that were directly distributed to the community; additionally, they sorted an x-large cart of newly donated baby clothes. Through hands-on involvement, curriculum, and educational activities, students gained a deeper understanding of food insecurity in the South Bay.   Testimonials   Participating in HandsOn Tomorrow has exposed me to not only leadership opportunities and volunteering experience, but also some of society's greatest social issues. Working towards these issues has greatly altered my perspective on societal contribution and purpose. Matt Lai HandsOn Tomorrow Alumni 2015 It's super important for young people to get involved in their community and start making a difference because no one is going to do it unless you step forward. Anushka Joshi HandsOn Tomorrow Palo Alto Team 2016         Young people need to be prepared when they go out into the real world. I would recommend HandsOn Tomorrow highly to any high school student thinking of doing volunteer work and getting exposure to life outside their own world. Sujata Joshi HandsOn Tomorrow Parent Palo Alto Team 2016           My time at HandsOn Tomorrow opened me up to so many problems that I didn't know the Bay Area was facing and made me feel a responsibility and passion for making change in my community. As a part of the YVC, I would like to foster empathy and education in communities around me so that stigmas can be cleared around prevalent issues in the Bay Area. The goal of the program is to encourage participants to be the change they wish to see in the world, and to organize together to become community leaders in the Bay Area and beyond. Cohorts are divided by region and complete projects with several Bay Area nonprofits over the course of a two week period. At the end of the program, participants will design, develop, and manage a capstone service project of their own. Through HandsOn Tomorrow, participants gain a greater understanding of pressing community needs, use critical thinking to brainstorm solutions, act on specific plans, and reflect on the successes and challenges of implementation. The opportunity gap The Bay Area has undergone tremendous changes over the last decade, and faces numerous challenges that are unique to California. The California Department of Education’s College/Career Indicator found that white and Asian American students are more likely than African American and Latino students to be prepared for college. Additionally, socioeconomically disadvantaged students are half as likely to be prepared as their more prosperous peers. We believe that HandsOn Tomorrow provides its participants with the resources to gain a deeper understanding of these challenges, channel their energy into action that spurs positive change, and helps bridge the opportunity gap facing many young members of the Bay Area community.  How you can help Currently, we are seeking sponsorships that will assist in covering program enrollment fees for Bay Area students who would otherwise be unable to participate in the program. Sponsorships will help us ensure that all students have access to HandsOn Tomorrow, regardless of economic background.  In 2023, HandsOn Tomorrow had three cohorts (San Francisco, Palo Alto, Oakland) and engaged 28 high school students from across the Bay Area. You see an issue affecting your community, you identify an opportunity for change, and you get involved. We still firmly believe that simple acts of service have the power to unite communities, bridge gaps, and develop empathy for the more vulnerable among us, but we also recognize that our mission is not as simple as it may seem. Whether you are exercising your green thumb in a park, painting the walls of low-income housing units, or helping a fellow human break down the barriers that keep them from employment, no volunteer work is complete without a social justice lens that acknowledges the deep-seeded effect that Racism has on every one of these issue areas. For this reason, we accept the responsibility to learn, educate, give and do more. Where we find ourselves It is quite shocking that while we are, “sort of,” “finally…..maybe” coming out of two years of dealing with the worst of COVID, we find ourselves confronting yet more horrors in the world.  The vicious attack on the Ukraine by Russia, the escalating attacks on the freedoms of our own citizens through hateful legislation aimed at preventing people of color from voting, a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body, or a transgender person’s right to be who they are.  Not to mention the backdrop of the increasing toll of climate change on our lives or the continuing toll of police brutality toward people of color.  It is really hard to maintain any sort of positive outlook on the world we find ourselves in. Those of us in the nonprofit world are often tasked with trying to find the hope hidden in the despair; trying to point out the ray of light that still shines in the darkness.  For me, even after 18 years at HandsOn Bay Area, I still turn to the healing power of service to others in need.  Just today I felt a renewed sense of joy when I saw the smiles of children as they received a stuffed toy made by a volunteer.  Or when I saw the happiness on the faces of people tasked with making a warm blanket for a senior or for a family experiencing homelessness.  Yes, these are tiny things and they seem so insignificant as an antidote to the horror of the world where we find ourselves, but I believe it is exactly these tiny acts of human kindness that win the day in the end.   Now, as always, I take comfort in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King jr. who told us “Darkness can not drive out darkness; only light can do that…'' and that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”  Where we find ourselves today is staring at a very, very long arc.  Through our service to others and these tiny acts of hope we inch towards the justice that awaits us at the other end. Below is a list of great organizations and ways that you can make a tiny act of hope and bring light into the darkness. In peace, Lou Reda Bay Area-Based Efforts The Ukrainian American Coordinating Council, based in San Francisco, is raising funds to pay for medical supplies to ship to Ukraine.  Palo-Alto based group Nova Ukraine puts together humanitarian aid packages for Ukrainians, and is currently raising funds to continue doing so. They also have a volunteer Facebook group .  Hromada, a San Francisco-based organization, runs the Anhelyk Foundation, which collects money to send children whose families died from fighting in eastern Ukraine. It also provides college scholarships. Ruslan Gurzhiy, the editor-in-chief for Slavic Sacramento, started a GoFundMe to send food, water, gas and medications to Ukrainian refugees. We expected better from those who have been entrusted with the laws of our nation. Let’s be clear that this decision will end in the death of low income women in our nation who do not have the means to travel to a place of safety for their health. It is for them and all women who have lost the right to choose that our hearts are breaking.   If you are compelled to action by this tragic decision - here are some organizations that help women with their reproductive rights: If/When/How Planned Parenthood La Casa Madres Help for the Fight Against Racism On January 07, 2023, Tyre Nichols was stopped by Memphis police officers for “suspected reckless driving,” with no evidence to substantiate this claim. He was hospitalized in critical condition and died three days later. RowVaughan Wells is Nichols’ mother who set up  an official gofundme  to allow Nichols family to afford time to grieve and take time off work. Wells is planning to create a memorial skate park for Nichols “in honor of his love for skating and sunsets.” Tyre Nichols Memorial Fund Black Futures Lab Black Lives Matter   Help for Queer and Transgender People  Rainbow Railroad LYRIC Housing Assistance to LGBTQ+ Youth   Help for Ukraine International Rescue Community Doctors Without Borders Medical Services: Unicef USA International Medical Corps Project HOPE Women's Rights  Equality Now : Equality Now works to achieve legal equality and promote women’s rights for women and girls through legislation changes, policy shifts, and advocacy. Center for Reproductive Rights : The Center for Reproductive Rights aims to advance women’s sexual and reproductive rights by challenging existing policies, norms, and legislation that are discriminatory to women’s wellbeing. ActionAid USA : ActionAid USA challenges social and cultural norms that suppress women and put them at risk for violence or discrimination. Juneteenth 2021 Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. While tens of thousands of people will attend parades, rodeos, cookouts, contests, live music, community awards, workshops, and other outdoor activities, this year’s Juneteenth is difficult to celebrate as Black people still must fight for equal rights in labor, health care, housing, education and more. In 2021, as Juneteenth was officially established as a federal holiday, some groups are simultaneously banning critical race theory in schools, destabilizing COVID mutual aid efforts, and refusing to fix systemic racism in our police force. Thus, as we move into the weekend, HandsOn Bay Area recognizes Juneteenth as a day of celebration and freedom but also acknowledges that there is more work that needs to be done by all of us. Projects must require at least three volunteers Projects must happen at least once a quarter - no one-time events, galas, or marathons Volunteers are not required to attend a training, get a background check, or sign-up through an additional system other than our website Corporate volunteering: Our staff works with you to design and manage a customized, done-in-a-day volunteer event in support of your organization. Generally take place during the workday (Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm) Groups are rarely less than 10 people, but can be as large as 200 Because companies plan these events with specific dates in mind, we can rarely shift these dates to accomodate pre-existing work days and events Get started If your organization... Register × Gap Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Levi Strauss & Co., Visa Inc., and Wells Fargo and Co.   Form Downtown Volunteer Coalition to Host Cross-company Volunteer Events  Supporting Revitalization of Downtown San Francisco  San Francisco, May 2, 2024 -- Gap Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Levi Strauss & Co., Visa Inc. and Wells Fargo and Co. – all companies that are committed to San Francisco – are proud to announce the formation of the Downtown Volunteer Coalition, with the support of HandsOn Bay Area.   The Downtown Volunteer Coalition will collaborate on cross-company volunteer events across downtown San Francisco to support cleaner and more vibrant streets, starting today with its first volunteer effort. Kicking off with remarks from company leaders at 1:00 pm in Embarcadero Plaza, more than 200 volunteers from the five companies will take part in twelve park beautification activities and neighborhood trash pickup projects across downtown and culminate with a group celebration at SF’s inaugural “Downtown First Thursdays” street festival.  In partnership with Hands On Bay Area, San Francisco Department of Public Works, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, and Refuse Refuse San Francisco, the volunteers will participate in activities like weeding, playground cleanup, pathway clearing, planter bed improvement, trash collection, and more. The park beautification projects will take place at the Rincon Hill Dog Park and Sue Bierman Park, and the neighborhood trash pickup projects will include the neighborhoods around the Embarcadero Plaza.  Going forward, the Downtown Volunteer Coalition will continue to develop quarterly cross-company volunteer events centered around downtown and surrounding neighborhoods to meet the needs of local nonprofit partners and local businesses.   The five founding companies of the Downtown Volunteer Coalition have long standing legacies, proud traditions and deep community ties to San Francisco that bridge generations. Together, these companies believe deeply in all that the city has to offer, that its best days are ahead, and that their employees want to be part of revitalizing downtown.   Other companies in San Francisco are encouraged to join the effort by visiting www.handsonbayarea.org/downtown-volunteer-coalition.     Quotes from Member Companies:  "Don and Doris Fisher opened our first store here in San Francisco to bridge the generation gap with clothing and experiences that spoke to a new idealism and imagined a better future,” said Amy Thompson, Chief People Officer at Gap Inc. “Fifty-five years later, we are still proudly bridging the gaps in our hometown by supporting activations like the Downtown Volunteer Coalition and First Thursdays that celebrate what we love about this city – engaged communities, supportive businesses, and a thriving culture of arts and music."  “JPMorgan Chase is proud of our history and long-standing commitments to San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. Healthy communities are integral to our business, and showing up as a community partner is in our firm’s DNA, so we're very excited to join forces with our corporate peers to help write the city's next chapter that strengthens its community and economy,” said Dan Schrauth, Managing Director, Wealth Advisor at J.P. Morgan Private Bank and Chair of JPMorgan Chase’s Bay Area Market Leadership Team. “We’re proud that our employees are teaming up and volunteering to support our community and lift up our shared values."  “Levi Strauss & Co. has called San Francisco our home since we were founded here more than 170 years ago. Starting with Levi Strauss himself, our employees have volunteered countless hours across the city over the decades. The Downtown Volunteer Coalition is an opportunity, alongside other iconic companies, to show up once again for our hometown,” said Kelly McGinnis, Levi Strauss & Co. Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. “As businesses, we have a vital role to play in creating the community we all want to call home. We hope other companies will join us in this effort, and subsequently, deepen our collective impact.”  “Visa has been part of the San Francisco community for over 60 years, and our commitment to the city is united with Visa’s purpose of uplifting everyone, everywhere.” said Worku Gachou, Head of North America Inclusive Impact & Sustainability, Visa. “We are proud to join our neighboring businesses to introduce the Downtown Volunteer Coalition to help uplift the vibrant and resilient community that makes San Francisco an epicenter for innovation.”  “Wells Fargo has been serving San Francisco and its local businesses and community since 1852. We are proud of our tradition of volunteerism and are excited to work with others on this initiative to help revitalize San Francisco’s downtown,” said Darlene Goins, head of Philanthropy and Community Impact at Wells Fargo." A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled https://www.handsonbayarea.org/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
