A dynamic and compassionate leader, Sarah brings a wealth of experience in both independent and public education, most recently serving as Interim Head of Upper School and Assistant Head of School for Academics at The Potomac School in McLean, Virginia. Throughout her career as a teacher, administrator, and curriculum innovator, Sarah has demonstrated a deep commitment to unlocking potential in students and educators alike. Known for her strategic insight, inclusive leadership, and intellectual curiosity, she embodies Windward’s mission to provide a dynamic, engaging education within a nurturing and inclusive community. Sarah is joined by her husband, Nico, and their son, Oscar, as they begin their journey as proud members of the Windward family. The Board is the guardian of the School’s mission. It is the Board’s responsibility to ensure that the mission is relevant and vital to the community it serves and to monitor the success of the school in fulfilling its mission. The Board does not intervene in the daily affairs of the School, such as curriculum development and faculty and staff personnel decisions. Instead, the Board focuses on three areas critical to the success of any independent school: It selects, evaluates, and supports the Head of School, to whom it delegates authority to manage the School; It develops broad institutional policies that guide the Head of School in running the School; It is accountable for the financial well-being of the School. In the conduct of its official business, the Board acts only as a whole; individual Trustees, including the Board Chair, have no authority to act unless specifically authorized to do so by the Board acting as a whole. Each Theme is anchored by specific Goals, each with their own Rationale and Guiding Questions. This plan marks an exciting new chapter in the School’s history, and will serve as a welcome roadmap as we approach the next six years in the only way we know how—together. THEME 1: Belonging THEME 2: Growth THEME 3: Partnering Together to Reach our Goals THEME 1: Belonging GOAL 1: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND BELONGING Rationale: Our work with respect to Community Engagement and Belonging is and will be ongoing because our growth in this area is linked to the mission of the School. Diverse perspectives and experiences enrich the lives of all of our students and lead to better decision making and learning outcomes. We must ensure all community members understand that they play important roles in the success of building an inclusive community that fosters a sense of belonging. True excellence can only be achieved in a community in which all members unite to create a culture that fosters belonging. Guiding Question: How can the Windward community cultivate an environment in which all members of the community feel seen, heard, connected, and valued as their authentic selves; and how can our actions reflect our values of community engagement and belonging? GOAL 2: STUDENT AND COMMUNITY WELL-BEING AND MENTAL HEALTH Rationale: Students need to learn to develop and nurture their own physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being. In addition, in order to support the growth of our students, it is essential to promote and support the well-being of the adults in our community, providing our students with faculty and staff who have the capacity to support them and can serve as role models for living meaningful and balanced lives. Guiding Question: How do we develop and nurture in all members of our community the awareness, emotional capacity, habits, knowledge, and skills they need in order to take on challenges and lead fulfilling lives? THEME 2: Growth GOAL 3: FOSTERING OUR CORE COMPETENCIES Rationale: Now that we have identified the traits we seek to develop, it is vital to develop a framework for introducing and growing these skills. We need to identify milestones based upon the different developmental stages our students are at in order to assess the progress that our students are developing as they approach graduation. We must also evaluate our curriculum, program, and activities to ensure our students are developing the human aspects that technology cannot replicate: problem solving, kindness, creativity, emotional intelligence, and empathy. Guiding Question: How can we develop and refine our curriculum, program, and activities to ensure that all Windward graduates are critical thinkers, effective communicators, resilient problem-solvers, inclusive leaders, and ethical and culturally responsive citizens? GOAL 4: INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE EDUCATORS AND EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES Rationale: The concepts for the Academic Hub, the Student Gathering Plaza, and the Innovation and Arts Center have been driven by faculty and student feedback and our programmatic aspirations. It is important to foster a culture in which faculty and staff are encouraged to take thoughtful risks by engaging in ongoing research and best practices, creating a path toward ongoing innovation and exploration. As we develop our students’ core competencies and provide the highest level of service to our community members, it is important for us to support faculty and staff in life-long learning and professional growth in a world that continues to change at an increasingly rapid pace. Guiding Question: How can we support our educators and staff in their ongoing research of best practices and innovative approaches that reflect our student learning and institutional goals and aspirations? THEME 3: Partnering Together to Reach our Goals GOAL 5: ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY Rationale: We need to be aware of the potential impact climate change may have on the world that our students will one day inherit. Environmental studies and research need to be integrated into our curriculum. It is essential for Windward to engage in sustainable practices that support an ideal learning environment for our students, and for our community to foster an environmentally sustainable culture in which we are stewards of our campus and positioned as leaders in the broader community. Guiding Question: How can Windward model environmental best practices and create an ideal learning environment for students? How can members of the Windward community be leaders in the development of habits of environmental sustainability? GOAL 6: INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT AND FINANCIAL STABILITY Rationale: Windward recognizes the value of the continuing support and engagement of our community of faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, neighbors and friends of the school throughout their lives. Our students and parents build strong ties during their years at Windward. Our parents and alumni engage in efforts to support our current students an Home - Windward School Skip To Main Content Close Menu Summer Give myWindward About About Strategic Plan Leadership Careers Learning & Belonging News & Publications Faculty/Staff Directory Admissions Admissions Tuition & Financial Aid Community Commitments FAQ Inquire Academics Academics Divisions Curriculum Learning Opportunities College Counseling Arts Arts Performing Arts Visual & Media Arts Student Work Athletics Athletics Teams Schedules Training and Performance Wildcat Wins Watch Live (opens in new window/tab) Community Community Student Life Parents/Guardians Alumni Windward Network Service Learning Mar Vista School Store (opens in new window/tab) Giving Giving Windward Fund Innovation Campaign Ways to Give Make a Gift Summer About About Strategic Plan Leadership Careers Learning & Belonging News & Publications Faculty/Staff Directory Admissions Admissions Tuition & Financial Aid Community Commitments FAQ Inquire Academics Academics Divisions Curriculum Learning Opportunities College Counseling Arts Arts Performing Arts Visual & Media Arts Student Work Athletics Athletics Teams Schedules Training and Performance Wildcat Wins Watch Live (opens in new window/tab) Community Community Student Life Parents/Guardians Alumni Windward Network Service Learning Mar Vista School Store (opens in new window/tab) Giving Giving Windward Fund Innovation Campaign Ways to Give Make a Gift Summer Summer News Close Search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search Popular Searches Calendar Bus Schedule Special Schedules How to Apply Visit Windward Curriculum at Windward Summer Give myWindward Open Search Open Menu In this Section About About Strategic Plan Leadership Careers Learning & Belonging News & Publications Faculty/Staff Directory Admissions Admissions Tuition & Financial Aid Community Commitments FAQ Inquire Academics Academics Divisions Curriculum Learning Opportunities College Counseling Arts Arts Performing Arts Visual & Media Arts Student Work Athletics Athletics Teams Schedules Training and Performance Wildcat Wins Watch Live (opens in new window/tab) Community Community Student Life Parents/Guardians Alumni Windward Network Service Learning Mar Vista School Store (opens in new window/tab) Giving Giving Windward Fund Innovation Campaign Ways to Give Make a Gift Summer Home Photo Title Displayed Here Empowering Learning. We believe that learning and belonging are not separate pursuits; each depends on and strengthens the other. When students feel they belong, they can engage more deeply in learning. When students are challenged to learn in a supportive environment, their sense of belonging grows. We believe that belonging is about being known, respected, and supported as your full self. It is not a program or a place, but a living practice shaped by relationships, shared expectations, and opportunities across school life. Belonging thrives when students feel socially connected, intellectually safe, and academically supported—able to stretch, struggle, and grow without being judged or left behind. Belonging is closely tied to student agency. When students lead, co-create, and influence the culture of our community, they are not just included, they are empowered. In this way, belonging is not something given to students, but something we help build together. We recognize that moments of not belonging are a natural part of growing up. At some point, every student may feel uncertain or disconnected. Part of adolescence is learning to navigate these moments with resilience and support. We also acknowledge that there are those in our community for whom these moments are not occasional but persistent and often rooted in feeling excluded or misunderstood because of core aspects of who they are. Belonging must never be framed as a test of personal toughness or adaptability; it is a shared responsibility to ensure that all community members feel seen and valued. The belonging of students and adults is intertwined. When faculty and staff feel valued, supported, and connected, they are better positioned to create those conditions for the young people they serve. As a community, we are committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, and we believe that our differences make us stronger. This work requires intention and care. We pursue belonging not through shaming or blaming, but through empathy, curiosity, and kindness. As we grow together, we will continue to listen, learn, and act so that belonging at Windward is not just a value we name but a daily practice of the mission that guides us. Allowing young people to participate in a range of academic and extracurricular experiences fosters social growth and responsibility, as well as personal development. Woven through the traditional college-preparatory courses—English language and literature, a complex social studies curriculum, mathematics, science, and foreign languages—are opportunities that enable students to be actively involved in their own education. Windward’s comprehensive and rigorous course of study teaches students to think independently, to reason with care and logic, to write and speak with clarity, and to identify and develop their aesthetic talents. This strong academic preparation is complemented by the development of ethics, character, and people skills. The School hopes its graduates will go forth from Windward with a strong sense of personal integrity, self-confidence, and pride in their particular talents, inspired by learning, and prepared for college and for life in the 21st century. Academic Programs STEAM Global Online Academy Creative Expression Speech & Debate Robotics Entrepreneurship & Innovation Global Studies STEAM The STEAM program is grounded in hands-on, collaborative learning that empowers students to design, create, and explore advanced technologies together. Rooted in community, the program fosters open, inclusive spaces where diverse perspectives fuel innovation and creativity. By connecting ideas across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, students develop imaginative solutions to real-world challenges. Embracing iteration, risk-taking, and responsible tool use, STEAM encourages bold thinking, learning from mistakes, and continual growth in the pursuit of meaningful work. Global Online Academy The mission of Global Online Academy (GOA) is to reimagine learning to enable students to thrive in a globally networked society. GOA provides a positive, interactive, and academically rigorous environment for students to learn. We offer courses that connect students to topics they care about, and we offer a network that connects students to peers as passionate as they are. Any GOA course taken during a student’s time in Grades 9-12 (including summers) will be listed on the student’s Windward transcript, and the grade earned will be included in the Windward GPA. Creative Expression Through creative expression, students are able to reflect on their experiences and find their voices. With the opportunities and challenges of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, it is more important than ever to give students opportunities to develop their unique ideas. In support of our Core Competency to help students become Effective Communicators, this program unites creative writing, multimedia presentations, oral presentations (including speech and debate), and written expression in the visual and performing arts. Students may join on a yearly basis beginning in ninth grade, and in recognition for additional coursework and outside of the classroom learning, they receive recognition on their transcript. Speech & Debate Windward’s Speech & Debate program helps students develop the confidence, clarity, and critical thinking needed to communicate effectively. Beginning in Middle School and continuing through Upper School, students learn how to research complex topics, evaluate multiple perspectives, and present well-reasoned arguments with poise. Through coursework and the Speech & Debate Club, students refine their public speaking, argumentation, and listening skills while engaging in thoughtful discussion of contemporary issues. Many students also participate in tournaments through the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA), connecting with a broader community of young speakers and debaters across the region. Robotics The Windward Omnicats are a robotics team that believes in building a great robot independently while still having fun. We are a close-knit team of friends and companions who aspire to build robots not just for FRC, but for the enhancement of our community as a whole. Entrepreneurship & Innovation At Windward, we define entrepreneurship in the same way as the World Economic Forum: “a process that results in creativity, innovation and growth. Innovative entrepreneurs come in all shapes and forms; its benefits are not limited to startups, innovative ventures, and new jobs. Entrepreneurship refers to an individual’s ability to turn ideas into action and is therefore a key competence for all” (World Economic Forum, quoted in Zhao, 2012, Page 3). The Entrepreneurship program seeks to inspire an entrepreneurial spirit in students. It is designed to raise students’ confidence while at the same time developing mental fortitude and flexibility. It also seeks to present students with real world experience and opportunities at solving difficult problems through creative thinking. Global Studies Windward School strives to prepare our students for effective participation in the global community. Through academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular opportunities to learn about different perspectives and cultures, students will utilize 21st-century skills, such as inquiry, collaboration, communication, leadership, and problem-solving. In doing so, Windward ensures it remains a welcoming and inclusive community whose graduates are knowledgeable, compassionate, and prepared citizens of the world. Our Deans of College Counseling steer students toward discovering college environments and learning communities best suited for their individual talents and goals. Our goal is to create a culture focused not on a school’s selectivity, but rather upon how each institution meets the individual needs of our graduates. We encourage students to take ownership of the college search and application process; this includes conducting research by reading college guidebooks, exploring websites, visiting college campuses, and attending college information sessions both on the Windward campus and in the Los Angeles area. While finding the appropriate college match for each student is our goal, we hope to build skills that will serve our students beyond their college years. College Counseling - A Four Year Journey Windward collaborates with families to help students understand the ways that college admissions should support student goals and interests. Our program helps students reflect and build a college plan with confidence and clarity. Too often the message in college admissions seems to be that where a student matriculates is more important than other factors in a teenager’s life. The pressure and publicity surrounding college applications can make families lose sight of what is essential: maintaining a sense of balance and appreciating and enjoying the entire high school experience. 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade 12th Grade 9th Grade At the 9th Grade level, Windward presents students with opportunities to explore their interests and develop their individual talents. Parents have opportunities to attend college financing and financial aid presentations in addition to parent coffees that address issues pertinent to students beginning their high school experience. 10th Grade Students are assigned to a specific Dean of College Counseling in the Spring. Sophomores meet individually with their assigned counselors to select appropriate courses for 11th Grade. Counselors introduce students to key features of the Naviance college counseling website; students receive individual logins and passwords that allow them to explore the website’s college search options, personality tests, and other features. 11th Grade No one-size-fits-all approach exists with regards to standardized testing. Juniors take the PSAT in October and have the option to take both SAT and ACT practice exams. At this time, students may wish to consider pursuing standardized test preparation. Many colleges will continue to offer test-flexible policies, so standardized testing may not be necessary if a student chooses only test-optional or test-free schools. Each November, students take a week-long college trip to the East Coast. The itinerary highlights a variety of colleges and universities in the Northeast, including schools on large, urban campuses and small liberal arts colleges in suburban and rural areas. Beginning in the Spring, Deans of College Counseling meet with their individual cohorts of Juniors during weekly Seminar time. Topics include Naviance, college list building, requesting letters of recommendation, building activity lists, case studies overview, and college application essay writing, among others. Individual meetings with Deans of College Counseling begin in the Spring. Students meet with their counselors to select courses for 12th Grade. Windward School joins with Brentwood, Crossroads, and Marlborough to host a workshop for 11th Grade students and families to learn more about the components of the college application via a mock application review and college fair. 12th Grade In late August, students participate in a one-day intensive application workshop that addresses The Common Application, University of California application, dates/forms/timelines, and other information pertinent to the college process. Students meet individually with college admissions representatives to receive feedback on their personal statements. Each Fall, more than 100 college representatives visit Windward during the school day to meet with interested Juniors and Seniors. During the Fall, Deans of College Counseling meet with their individual cohorts of Seniors during weekly Seminar time. Topics include reviewing college lists for balance, writing essays and supplements, filling out applications, building activity lists, among others. Windward offers Senior parents and guardians the opportunity to meet one-on-with with a financial aid advisor. We aim to show students that college is a match to be made and not a prize to be won. We realize that this investment in your child's future, while worth the sacrifice, is challenging for many families. Our comprehensive financial aid program, along with flexible payment options, are ways we hope to make a Windward education accessible. 2026-27 Tuition & Fees Base Tuition: $58,101 New Student Fee: $3,000 Traffic Mitigation Fee: $1,800 Senior Fee: $1,250 Tuition Structure Overview Additional Expenses Traffic Mitigation Payment Plans School-Issued Technology Tuition Structure Overview Beginning in 2026-27, families will see one inclusive base tuition and one unified traffic mitigation fee, creating a clearer and more predictable cost structure. We want our tuition model to better reflect Windward’s core values of transparency, partnership, and access. By simplifying our approach to fees, families gain a clearer understanding of the full cost of a Windward education, supporting our shared commitment to thoughtful planning and a dynamic learning experience for all students. Additional Expenses Beginning in 2026-27, incidental fees—including retreats, Parent Guild membership, and student activities—are incorporated into base tuition as part of our updated and simplified tuition structure. Some costs that depend on student choice and participation (such as textbooks, OneCard expenses, and certain program-related trips) will be billed separately. Traffic Mitigation The traffic mitigation fee brings together costs that were previously applied in different ways across grade levels and is included in the total tuition amount for each student. In the past, families’ use of services such as busing varied by grade and need. This updated structure shares the cost of campus-wide services required by the School’s Conditional Use Permit more equitably across the community, including: Security and traffic monitoring Parking management Daily transportation systems (including busing to and from school, as well as a convenient shuttle route) This approach ensures that every student benefits from the essential infrastructure that keeps campus safe, accessible, and environmentally responsible. Payment Plans Windward offers flexible tuition payment options: 1 payment – pay tuition in full. 2 payments – split tuition into two installments. 12-month plan – spread payments across the year. School-Issued Technology Windward issues a school-issued iPad to all new students. Base tuition also covers ongoing student tech support and the maintenance needed to ensure each device meets campus security requirements. In addition, each new student will be issued a Yondr bag upon entry. Please note that repairs resulting from misuse, as well as optional upgrades such as enhanced WiFi service, will be billed separately to families. Significant investment: In the 2025–26 academic year, over $4.6 million was dedicated to financial aid.
