Overview ʿUmrah consists of ihrām , ṭawāf (7 circuits), two rakʿahs, saʿy between Ṣafā-Marwah (7 laps), then ḥalq/taqṣīr (shave/trim). Step-by-Step Miqat & Ihrām: Before crossing miqāt, perform ghusl, men wear two white cloths (women wear normal modest clothing). Make niyyah for ʿUmrah and recite Talbiyah: “Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna-l-ḥamda wan-niʿmata laka wal-mulk, lā sharīka lak.” Enter Masjid al-Ḥarām: Right foot first; say the masjid duʿāʾ. Ṭawāf (7 circuits): Begin at al-Ḥajar al-Aswad; keep Kaʿbah to your left; proceed counter-clockwise 7 times. For men: idṭibāʿ and raml (first 3 circuits) if not overly crowded. Two Rakʿahs: After ṭawāf, pray 2 rakʿahs behind Maqām Ibrāhīm (or anywhere available). Saʿy (Ṣafā → Marwah): 7 laps starting at Ṣafā; walk briskly between green markers (men). Recite duʿāʾ and dhikr throughout. Ḥalq/Taqṣīr: Men: shave (preferable) or trim all around; Women: trim a fingertip’s length from the end of their hair. Exit Ihrām: Ihrām ends after hair is cut. ʿUmrah complete. Notes: Avoid prohibited actions in ihrām (fragrance, nail/hair cutting, marital relations, hunting, etc.). Women do not perform idṭibāʿ or raml. Suggested Duʿāʾ & Dhikr At ṭawāf start: “Bismillāhi Allāhu Akbar” (upon facing the Black Stone, if possible). Between Rukn Yamānī and Ḥajar: “Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār.” Disclaimer: This is a concise guide per Hanafi fiqh. For crowd management, women’s specifics, or multiple ʿUmrahs, consult a scholar. © 2025 Islamic Society of East Bay (ISEB). A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Pillars & Obligations (Summary) Arkān (Pillars): Ihrām with niyyah; Wuquf at ʿArafah; Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah. Wājibāt: Saʿy, stoning jamarāt, staying in Muzdalifah, nights of Minā, ḥalq/taqṣīr, Farewell ṭawāf (for non-residents). 8 Dhū al-Ḥijjah (Yawm at-Tarwiyah) Enter ihrām (if doing Ḥajj al-Tamattuʿ, re-enter ihrām for Ḥajj). Go to Minā; pray Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ and Fajr of next day (shortening 4-rakʿah prayers). 9 Dhū al-Ḥijjah (ʿArafah → Muzdalifah) After sunrise, depart to ʿArafah. Wuquf (standing) from Ẓuhr until sunset – the heart of Ḥajj. After Maghrib (without praying it in ʿArafah), move to Muzdalifah; pray Maghrib & ʿIshāʾ combined, stay overnight. Collect pebbles (7+21 for the next days). 10 Dhū al-Ḥijjah (Yawm an-Naḥr) Stone Jamrat al-ʿAqabah (7 pebbles). Offer Qurbānī (if required by your Ḥajj type). Ḥalq/taqṣīr (men shave preferred; women trim fingertip length). Change into normal clothes; proceed to Makkah for Ṭawāf al-Ifāḍah + Saʿy (if not done earlier). Return to Minā for the nights. 11–12 (optionally 13) Dhū al-Ḥijjah Each day after Ẓuhr: Stone all 3 jamarāt (7 each, total 21 per day) in order: Ṣughrā → Wusṭā → ʿAqabah. Remain in Minā nights (wājib). On day 12 you may leave before sunset; otherwise stay to 13 and repeat stoning. Farewell Ṭawāf Before leaving Makkah, non-residents perform Ṭawāf al-Wadāʿ (Farewell ṭawāf). This is wājib in Hanafi fiqh. Tips: Recite Talbiyah until stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah on the 10th. Follow group timings and safety instructions; crowds can be intense. Women: no idṭibāʿ/raml; keep hair covered; trim only. Disclaimer: Practical steps summarized per the Hanafi school. Local circumstances and group logistics may adjust exact timings; consult your scholar/group leader. © 2025 Islamic Society of East Bay (ISEB). A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
