LACOE PBIS Unit Statement of Purpose The LACOE PBIS Unit is committed to building the capacity of educational organizations by using data to support their development of systems and practices that promote equitable social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for each student. We provide training, coaching, and technical assistance to guide partners to make data-based decisions informed by a research-based PBIS implementation framework. PBIS is a customized approach to organize behavioral interventions into a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students. The fundamental purpose of PBIS is to make schools more effective, efficient, and equitable learning environments for all students. The LACOE PBIS Unit training program aligns with the National Technical Assistance Center for PBIS. We use a Train-the-Trainer Model with districtwide systematic implementation as the final outcome. If you are interested in participating in PBIS training, please contact us at: pbis@lacoe.edu or 562-922-6789 What is PBIS? Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based , tiered framework for supporting students ’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives. We use ‘students’ to refer to all children and youth in any educational or therapeutic setting (e.g., K-12 school, early childhood program, treatment program, juvenile justice program). We must systemically reject and disrupt inequitable and racist practices within our own organization and within the local education agencies, we serve. This work begins with inward reflection and continues with an examination of the existing structures that contribute to the marginalization of students, families, and staff. We are developing strategies and actions across four priority areas, and we will continue to share updates on our journey and the best practices we develop as an organization. Organizational Culture Create a diverse, inclusive and culturally responsive organization that respects and values all staff. Leverage data-driven decisions to identify and disrupt systemic barriers to equity. Foster positive workplace culture and climate. Professional Development & Growth Invest in opportunities to build a foundation of cultural competency aimed at lifting strengths, needs and opportunities of all staff. Ensure continuous learning and feedback cycles. Policies, Processes and Practices Assess LACOE’s policies, processes and practices to identify factors that may lead to inequities. Develop and enhance practices that promote fair, equitable and just workplace opportunities.place culture and climate. Staff Engagement Engage employees in conversations along LACOE’s journey toward equity and social justice. Create organization-wide opportunities for employee voice and feedback loops. Each public school district and charter school organization in the county is invited to send one winner to compete in the regional competition. The competition also invites students who attend a private, parochial, independent charter, or homeschool to participate by qualifying as a top scorer on the Scripps Online Test or by winning a Community Spelling Bee. The LA County Regional Spelling Bee tests the skills, smarts and stamina of participating students. The top two, grades 4-6, winners of the regional competition are sponsored by LACOE to participate in the California State Elementary Spelling Bee in May.
