We provide a broad range of advanced learning and enrichment experiences responsive to the special needs of gifted and talented students. Identification Students qualify for GATE during their third or fourth grade year and have demonstrated their abilities, effort and talent in three ways: Academic Achievement: Student’s performance on nationally standardized tests of achievement, such as the California Assessment of Student Progress and Performance, or Measures of Academic Progress. Cognitive Abilities: Students are given a nationally normed achievement test evaluating intellect. Teacher Appraisal: Teachers evaluate students’ classroom performance, creative thinking and leadership. Middle School Students have the opportunity to take Honors Level English Language Arts and/or Mathematics classes. To enter the Honors Level classes, the middle school administration and staff annually evaluate students based on grades, teacher recommendation and standardized test scores. Services to Identified Students During the school day, students are provided differentiated instruction to extend their learning. Students in 4th - 8th grade are provided differentiated instruction by their classroom teachers in all content areas. After the school day students are offered enrichment activities during our Expanded Learing Opportunities Program (ELOP). Professional Development for Teachers Our teachers are trained in Making All Kids Smarter. In this 30 hour GATE certification course, teachers learn how to increase engagement and learning through using depth and complexity strategies that help students build deep comprehension and understanding in language arts and math. Please be sure to scroll down to your desired transfer application and complete the appropriate form. If you have any questions please contact us at (562) 690-2317. IntraDistrict Transfers An IntraDistrict Transfer is when parents/guardians wish to enroll their student(s) at a school other than the designated school that is in their attendance area within the La Habra City School District. All IntraDistrict applications must be sumbitted during our transfer application window. Although IntraDistrict Transfers provide the opportunity to choose a school other than school of residence, it is important to note that under current District Board Policy AR 5116.1 an IntraDistrict transfer application may be denied for any one of the following reasons: Actual student enrollment at a school may not fall below or exceed previously established capacity. No student currently residing in the attendance area of his/her assigned school shall be displaced from his/her assigned school by students transferring from outside the school’s attendance area. Students exercising the option to transfer to an alternate school within our District must provide their own transportation, except for the Dual Immersion program. A request to attend a school within LHCSD, other than the school of residence may be denied based upon documented attendance issues. A request to attend a school within LHCSD, other than the school of residence may be denied based upon documented misconduct of the student at another District. In addition, once a student has been approved to their designated school of choice, that school becomes their designated school of attendance (home school) through the completion of their last elementary school year. A new application must be submitted if the student would like to attend a middle school other than their school of attendance. Students placed in specialized programs through the IEP process do not require an Intra-District Transfer Request. The Superintendent/Designee may revoke a student’s Intra-District Transfer Request at any time and the student may be transferred back to his/her school of residence for any of the following reasons: Unsatisfactory attendance or continual tardiness Failure of parent to make adequate transportation arrangements or provide for adequate safety measures in getting to the requested school campus Unsatisfactory behavior or citizenship. District transfer requests are subject to IEP team review as well as programming impact Although IntraDistrict space is available at every campus, it is anticipated that some schools may have a limited number of spaces available in certain grade levels. In any instance, where the number of IntraDistrict transfer requests exceeds the space available, the filling of spaces will be determined by the date and time of the applications submitted. Requests that are not selected will be placed on a waiting list. Please Note: If you were previously granted an Intra-District permit, there is no need to reapply each year, except when transitioning from elementary school to middle school. InterDistrict Transfer into LHCSD An InterDistrict Transfer into LHCSD is when a parent/guardian who lives outside of our district boundaries wishes to enroll their student(s) into the La Habra City School District. All Inter-District Transfer Renewals must be initiated in the district of residence. Permits are valid for ONE YEAR with the La Habra City School District and must be renewed EVERY SCHOOL YEAR. There is no guarantee of future renewal. The parent/guardian is responsible for providing transportation. InterDistrict Transfer out of LHCSD An InterDistrict Transfer out of LHCSD is when families reside in our district boundaries and want to exit the La Habra City School District. When submitting your application, please be sure to attach the required supporting documentation (acceptable documents are listed on the back of the transfer agreement). Additionally, as part of the application process, a meeting with your residence school principal is required. Be sure to schedule this meeting for both new requests and renewals. Failure to do so will result in a delay in processing your application. **Please note that incomplete applications will not be processed.** Board Policy Regarding InterDistrict Attendance Child Care Form Principal Meeting School Contact Information Appeal Process - Interdistrict Transfers If you disagree with the decision of LHCSD you can appeal in writing within 30 days of the date on your denial letter.
