From phones and laptops to scooters, e-bikes, and even power tools, the little power packs make modern life easier. But as convenient as they are, the City’s partners at the Orange County Fire Authority warn lithium batteries can also pose a fire risk if they are damaged, misused, or improperly disposed of. October is Fire Prevention Month, the perfect time to brush up on safe battery habits. The month commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which began on October 8 and forever changed the approach to fire safety. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) created Fire Prevention Week in the 1920s to honor that anniversary. Today, the campaign continues, with a focus on new challenges like the safe use of lithium batteries. Signs of Trouble Like most things, batteries often give warning signs before they fail. If you notice an odd odor, discoloration, overheating, swelling, leaking, or unusual noises, stop using the device immediately. If it is safe, move it away from anything that can burn, and call 9-1-1. A Simple Reminder This year’s NFPA Fire Prevention Week campaign sums it up simply: Buy only listed products Charge devices safely Recycle batteries responsibly Everyday Safety Tips The good news is that a little care goes a long way in keeping you and your family safe: Purchase devices that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Use only the battery and charging cord designed for your device. Unplug chargers once a device is fully charged. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Charge in a flat, dry area, away from children, direct sunlight, and exits. Store batteries at room temperature and away from anything flammable. Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Recycle batteries through your local waste management or recycling center. Avoid piling discarded batteries together in a single container. Keep spare batteries locked away from children and pets. They are toxic if swallowed. Lithium batteries may be small, but their safety deserves big attention. With thoughtful use, proper storage, and responsible recycling, we can enjoy all the benefits of our modern devices while keeping our homes and families safe. Founded by Don Jose Serrano, the City incorporated on December 20, 1991 and merged the areas of Foothill Ranch and El Toro. Lake Forest, located in the heart of South Orange County, is known for its charm of a small community with the convenience of a large metropolitan city. The City’s motto, “remember the past, challenge the future,” is the Lake Forest way of life and ensures Lake Forest will always be an ideal place for business to prosper and people to live, work and play. Over the past three decades, the City has grown and welcomed new developments throughout the City. Although the City will continue to grow in the coming years, with no large undeveloped parcels slated for development, the City is focused on maintaining Lake Forest's beauty and transitioning into a maintenance city, which encompasses repairing roads and highways, caring for public parks, and providing other public services to improve the quality of life for Lake Forest residents. 30 Interesting Facts 30 Reasons to love Lake Forest City News & Updates: Sign up for the City of Lake Forest e-Newsletter Local Business News & Updates: Sign up for the Economic Development e-Newsletter Follow us on Facebook, opens in a new tab Follow us on Instagram, opens in a new tab Follow us on X, opens in a new tab Follow us on Youtube, opens in a new tab City Government Departments Community Business Services Explore Location View address on Google Maps, opens in a new tab 100 Civic Center Dr. Lake Forest, CA 92630 Phone (949) 461-3400 HOURS Mon - Thu | 8am - 6pm Fri | 8am - 5pm * Building & Planning counter times vary. Orange County Sheriff's Department Crime Mapping is a timely and accurate map that identifies recent crime in one's community and neighborhood. Crime Mapping uses an advanced mapping engine and crime data is extracted on a regular basis from law enforcement agencies so it is the most current information available. The offenses are organized by types of crime and address information is generalized to a block to protect privacy. View any recent crime activity in Lake Forest . Crime Statistics As of January 1, 2021, the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) became the national standard for law enforcement crime data reporting in the United States. The transition to NIBRS represents a significant shift – and improvement – in how reported crime is measured and estimated by the federal government. NIBRS captures detailed data about the characteristics of criminal incidents, including: a broad array of offenses types and amount of property lost demographic information about victims, offenders, and persons arrested what type of weapon, if any, was used in the incident NIBRS data more accurately reflect the types of crime addressed by police agencies, like simple assault, animal cruelty, destruction of property, intimidation, and identity theft. The broad scope of the information collected in NIBRS will greatly improve the nation’s understanding of crime and public safety. In June 2021, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department transitioned from the Uniform Crime Reporting Program Summary Report System (UCR SRS) to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The public can access crime statistics by area through the State of California Department of Justice website https://openjustice.doj.ca.gov/exploration/crime-statistics/crimes-clearances and search for Orange Co – Lake Forest. The City publishes the statistics so residents can quickly get a snapshot of crime trends in the community. Approval of the concept plan confirms the overall design direction for the park. Funding for construction will be considered at a future City Council meeting, once detailed cost estimates and engineering analyses are completed. The concept plan was developed by David Volz Design following an extensive community outreach effort. Outreach included two in-person community meetings and a digital survey that generated more than 1,500 public comments, which were used to inform the design and identify community priorities. Key elements of the proposed concept plan include: Relocating the playground and basketball court to the larger “bulb” area of green space at the opposite end of the park, creating a more open, visible, and centralized activity area. A significantly upgraded playground with two distinct play areas designed for ages 2–5 and 5–12. Removal of the existing berm, which currently creates hidden areas that contribute to vandalism and vagrancy, improving visibility and safety throughout the park. A future walking path with exercise stations planned as part of a later phase of the project. Together, these improvements would transform the park from being approximately 80 percent unusable today to an estimated 75 percent usable, greatly expanding active recreation and open space for the community. The walking path and exercise stations are anticipated to be part of Phase 2 of the project and would likely be incorporated after completion of the nearby I-5 Freeway on-ramp project, currently estimated between 2030 and 2032. All elements of the concept plan are subject to change based on future engineering, environmental review, and funding considerations. City staff will return to the City Council at a future meeting with refined plans and cost estimates for consideration as the project moves forward.
