The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center is a recreation center that serves the youth, family and senior population of Los Angeles. It is a place where people young and old will have opportunities to learn and grow, to build dreams and friendships, and to find sanctuary and hope. From first-time swimmer to experienced athlete, the L.A. Red Shield has something for you. Located on Union and 11th Street, the L.A. Red Shield serves the local community through a multifaceted program that includes a pool, gym, group exercise studio, dance studio, game room, computer lab, stage and performing arts space, gathering spaces and more. The community center offers tutoring in math, reading and writing; computer education; recreational swim and swim lessons; and sports, including basketball and soccer leagues. Find out what The L.A. With several different venues and classes focusing on health and wellness, the arts, science and education, youth leadership, ministry, and so much more, The Salvation Army L.A. Red Shield Community Center has something for everyone. The History of The L.A. Red Shield In 1929, The Salvation Army established a community playground adjacent to its headquarters building on 832 West 9th Street. The playground was lit at night and was heavily used by youngsters in the neighborhood.  In 1942, seeing the growth of the community and the rise of delinquency warranted an increased program, the Red Shield boys club was organized and housed in a small wood frame building at the rear of the playground. By 1947, the Program was flourishing and had severely outgrown its small facility on 9th Street. A Capital Campaign was organized by The Salvation Army for the purpose of raising necessary money for the Booth Memorial Center and the Los Angeles Day Care Center, and the funds to construct a new and enlarged Red Shield Center. When all the money was in, the Booth Center and L.A. Day Care Center had met their fundraising goal, but the money raised for the Red Shield was just enough to buy a couple of vacant lots on 11th Street and none to consider beginning construction. The new Red Shield building would cost $100,000 to build. At this point, the radio industry of Los Angeles was asked to help. Under the direction of The Salvation Army's Public Relations Director, Lloyd Doctor and KFI Radio Station Manager Charley Hamilton, a unique fundraising "gimmick" was devised that proved quite successful. The "gimmick" was the formation of "Committee of One-Hundred Thousand", with each committee member enlisted by an all-out radio appeal by the city's disc jockeys. To become a member, listeners were asked to send in one dollar to be used to construct the Red Shield. Soon local newspapers took an interest and sufficient funds were raised in no time. The first to be built in 1949 was the gym and game room, which officially opened in 1950. Again the Red Shield experienced tremendous growth and in 1954, the Los Angeles Junior League Girls Club wing was built and the "Harry Chandler Memorial Pool was also built that same year. Once again to accommodate growth, the expansion of the Red Shield continues with the construction of a new two-story building that will house a new computer lab, library and state- of-the-art dance studio. Moonbeams: Boys & Girls Ages 4–6 Moonbeams is a national character-building program sponsored by The Salvation Army for boys and girls in grades Preschool (age 4) through Kindergarten. Explorers: Boys Grades 1–4 A program similar to boy scouts; this Christian based program encourages boys in grades 1–4 to explore & discover the world around them, while learning different skills, and earning badges (4-6 weeks average per badge). By participating in a variety of activities including team building, sportsmanship, and memorizing Bible verses, these young boys develop personal, social, and spiritual skills, as they grow in a relationship with God. Liability Waiver Please read this Waiver carefully as it affects your legal rights in the event of an injury, contraction of a communicable disease, infection and/or damage to property.  Participants understand that the use of the facilities and/or services may involve risk of bodily injury, property damage, contraction of a communicable disease and/or contraction of a viral or bacterial infection and agree to assume any such risks. In case of illness or accident at our facility, The Salvation Army Community Center is authorized to secure emergency medical treatment at member/participant’s expense. It is up to the participant to consult physicians and other professionals to make sure that they can safely participate in activities and events offered by The Salvation Army Community Center. Participant also understands and agrees that by registering, they are giving up their right (or the minor for whom they register) to make any claim against The Salvation Army, its agents, employees, and volunteers, including the right to sue them, for bodily injury, property damage, contraction of a communicable disease and/or contraction of a viral or bacterial infection of any type and/or any other loss that they might suffer while using The Salvation Army Community Center facilities and/or services, except as limited by law. Family Membership Definition One or two adults living in a household and dependents who are eligible up to the age of 17. At age 18, an individual with a disability or an elderly parent who is living in the same household will remain eligible for the Family membership. Verification of family status and residency may be required. For example utility bill, health insurance, etc. Membership Change/Cancellation Billing Any requested change that affects the automatic billing of your membership, including membership cancellation, must be submitted by the 10th of the month to be processed for the following month. If changes occur after the 10th of the month, you will have one more billing before the change takes effect. Lapsed Membership If a member cancels or if membership payments lapse for more than 30 days, the appropriate registration fee will be charged to reopen the membership account. Insufficient Funds Policy There is a $20 charge for each insufficient funds transaction. This places your membership on hold until payment is received. Financial Assistance/Scholarship Program Individuals, families, and seniors who cannot afford Community Center membership or fees for youth camps and/or group classes can apply for a discount. The Community Center may use this information to consult public sources to help determine whether a guest may pose unreasonable harm to our patrons, staff or visitors. Your safety is important to us. We are focused on locating long term housing for each family, including transitional and permanent housing options.
