We have now completed our Visioning Our Tomorrow listening campaign in which our community identified who we are today, what we value for our future, and what is most important to us in a senior rabbi. Our listening campaign was a huge success, gathering valuable information while bringing our community together.
We are pleased to share the report below, which will be the foundation for the work of our Seeking Our Sacred Partner Committee, LBT’s search committee.

Our Leo Baeck Temple community members are at the heart of this process. On this page, we provide updates on the status of our transition. Latest Updates Below is a communication that was sent out to our community on May 6, 2026 by LBT President, Todd Bloomfield. Through the now-completed Visioning Our Tomorrow listening campaign, we defined who we are as a community and what we seek in our next senior rabbi. We conducted extensive research on best practices for rabbinic transition. We met with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). We also consulted with clergy and lay leaders from congregations across the country that were going through rabbinic transition and who had an internal candidate. Our long-standing Associate Rabbi, Lisa Berney, has expressed interest in our senior rabbi position. Guided by this research, the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees have decided to begin our search by considering Rabbi Berney’s candidacy prior to the national placement process, which begins in August. The insights from our Visioning Our Tomorrow listening campaign will inform this process, which will be led by the Seeking Our Sacred Partner Committee. That committee will make a recommendation to our officers and trustees. Consistent with our bylaws, you, the Leo Baeck Temple congregation, will vote to make the final decision. I look forward to your participation as we take this important step together. Seeking Our Sacred Partner The second step of Our Community, Our Future, is literally to seek our next sacred partner. We have now begun the search process to identify our next senior rabbi. The Seeking Our Sacred Partner Committee will use everything we learned from Visioning Our Tomorrow as our guide. The unprecedented pain of the two years initiated by Hamas’s ruthless massacre on October 7, 2023 will remain a part of the Jewish conscience forever. The healing we wish for both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples will require time and tending. Our congregation stands with all those in and beyond the Jewish community who are devoted to the vision of an enduring peace. We pray and commit to working for continued progress along the path accepted by both the Israeli government and Hamas, and we implore President Trump to lead the world effort to hold both parties accountable to their word. May the families of those killed, wounded, or formerly imprisoned by Hamas feel the strength of our love and loyalty. We pledge to support them as they seek to mend their hearts, their minds, and their belief in tomorrow. May the people of Gaza summon the strength to rebuild their lives, from the entire neighborhoods that have been demolished to the entire families that have been shattered. While others may succumb to voices of hatred, we align ourselves with our religious tradition, which affirms that every human being is created in the image of God. A river of blood has been spilled to repudiate forever anyone who believes a peaceful future will be forged without both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples enjoying full rights of self-determination. Those who dream of an Israel without a Palestine, or a Palestine without an Israel, are advocates for war, no matter how much they may speak of peace, for there is no road that leads to their ambitions without war. Let us be among those who join in the pursuit of peace and human dignity for all. We are proud to build upon our rich history of social justice work with the goal of creating a more just, caring, equitable, and livable society. Our congregation takes action at the local, state and national level alongside our Jewish and interfaith partners. Leo Baeck Temple’s Community Organizing Leadership Team (COLT) works to heal the world through building relationships, acting in partnership, and engaging politically. Our City Leo Baeck Temple is committed to meeting immediate needs, from feeding the hungry to comforting the homeless, as well as building power through LA Voice our local interfaith organizing partner. With LA VOICE we work on increasing affordable housing, advocating for immigrants, and ending mass incarceration. We are also a Sanctuary congregation and work with Sanctuary, Asylum and Refugee families to support them to settle in Los Angeles and find stability in their lives. Our State We work closely with two partners, RAC California, a coalition of 60+ Reform Synagogues working across the State of California and PICO California, our Interfaith Organizing partner which is the umbrella organization for LA Voice and nine other PICO affiliates up and down the State. We are proud to partner with RAC CA on our climate justice work. Though I may need breaks from time to time, when I delve deeper into working with others at LBT on social justice, I feel more connected and hopeful.” “The opportunity to live one’s values is invaluable. Having the opportunity in a small way to participate (in politics) gives me the sense that this small contribution can make a difference certainly in my own life – but in the lives of those with whom I come into contact.” “Community organizing at LBT gives you a rare opportunity to get to know other members of the community deeply while actually changing the world (or the state or city). By the end of each campaign, people are really a team, and those relationships change everything about your experience at LBT, from attending services to participating in classes or community events.” Our Partners History of LBT’s Justice Work Social action and civic engagement have been a hallmark of Leo Baeck Temple since its inception. Founding Rabbi Leonard Beerman was known for his political activism and leadership in interfaith dialogue. In 2017, Leo Baeck Temple began our partnership with LA Voice, a multi-faith, multiracial coalition dedicated to transforming Los Angeles County into a place that reflects the dignity of all of its people. LA Voice, the local affiliate of Faith in Action, is deeply connected with other synagogues, churches, and mosques – thereby leveraging our impact. This partnership is a complement to our partnership with the Religious Action Center, the social justice arm of the Reform Movement, and Reform CA, the California coalition of the Religious Action Center. We build our congregational community upon the three pillars that are said in our tradition to sustain the world. Al HaTorah (On Torah) We seek to engage members of all ages in meaningful Jewish learning. Our Jewish tradition acknowledges the unique sanctity, joy and peace that emerges from study, and our congregation cherishes the role that lifelong learning plays in deepening the bonds of community, emboldening the resolve to improve the world, and enriching the Jewish spirit. Al HaAvodah (On Worship) We seek to celebrate together the joy, beauty, depth and mystery of life through communal prayer. Our synagogue is a welcoming home to spiritual exploration for worshippers possessing a wide range of theological orientations and diverse conceptions of God. We are bound together in the pursuit of holiness to be found in the blessings, melodies and rituals of our sacred heritage, shared during the week, on Shabbat and Festivals, and at the important passages of our life. Al G’milut Chasadim (On Acts of Loving Kindness) We seek to embody Judaism’s deepest values in our lives and reflect them in the type of temple community we create. Sustained by this warm, caring and open community, we work together to improve the quality of human existence and to heal our world by speaking out and by taking action where our religious tradition demands that we do so. We embrace our Jewish obligation to one another and to the stranger – to those in our city and nation, to those in the land of Israel and to Jews of all lands, and to those in need throughout the world. Leo Baeck Temple is where our congregants want to be. The design for our campus is grounded in two principles: community-building and integration with nature. All across our sprawling campus, you will find informal gathering spaces, those that encourage more intimate in-the-round worship, and places to maximize the connection between indoors and out, providing ample natural light – all of which reinforce the temple’s deep communal identity. Book an event History of Leo Baeck Temple In 1948, a small group of families in Los Angeles dreamed about founding a temple that would become a part of the sweeping movement to establish Reform Judaism in Southern California. It was a dream of a religious home, the simplicity and sincerity of which would reflect our faith. With the leadership and guidance of Rabbi Alfred Wolf, Temple Beth Aaron was formed. Soon after, members of this young congregation heard a legendary rabbi speak. This rabbi had survived the Holocaust and risked his life as one of the most important leaders of German Jewry in its struggle to survive under Nazism. He was a model of the human capacity to rise above the most degrading experiences. This rabbi’s name was Leo Baeck. So moved were they by his inspiration – our founders chose to rename the young congregation Leo Baeck Temple. Learn more about our early leadership—founding rabbi, Leonard I. In Judaism, tzedakah is not merely an act of giving; it is a commitment of faith. Each gift to Leo Baeck Temple, whether time and/or resources, reflects that tradition – a commitment of much more than a single act of giving. Financial contributions provide inspiring worship services, stimulating educational opportunities for children and adults, connection and caring for our congregational community, fulfillment of our commitment to tikkun olam (repairing the world) and K’Lal Israel (the Jewish community worldwide), membership to all who wish to join regardless of ability to pay our full membership commitment, and maintenance of our buildings and grounds. Likewise, gifts of time and talent provide much needed support of our programs and initiatives. Everything we do is possible because of your generosity! Annual Giving Campaign Build with Us LBT’s ability to continue to thrive is dependent on the support of our community. Even in an ordinary year, it takes a lot of resources to make our community what it is. Membership commitments and religious school fees alone do not fund Leo Baeck Temple and we always rely on the generosity of our supporters to contribute beyond the fundamental level of membership. As you reflect on the impact LBT has had on you and your family, we ask that you make LBT’s annual giving campaign a philanthropic priority this year. With your support, Leo Baeck Temple will be able to continue to enrich our lives, in both good times and challenging times, for many years to come. Make Your gift Now Relax. Remember. Reflect. The LBT Memorial Garden is a first-of-its-kind approach to synagogue remembrance. Learn More Ways to Give Annual Giving Campaign Annual Spring Event - Heroes & Angels ATID - Into the Future While the membership commitment and Religious School tuition help pay for much of the cost to run the temple, we also rely on philanthropic annual gifts from LBT congregants. These gifts allow us to provide innovative programming and engagement opportunities for our congregation, while also enabling LBT to have a positive impact on the broader Jewish community. Give Now Every spring, we gather as a community for an annual gala event - Heroes and Angels. This event honors those whose contributions to our community have left an indelible mark on Leo Baeck Temple and who help make it the special place that it is. Sponsorship opportunities are available, along with a tribute book, and event tickets in the months leading up to the event. Learn More ATID was created to ensure the ongoing strength and self-sufficiency of this community to serve our members and to prepare, adapt and respond to unforeseen challenges that may come our way. The way in which Reform Jews choose to experience their Judaism has been changing, and those changes have only been accelerated by the pandemic. In order to adapt to the changes, both those we can foresee and those we cannot, we seek to make investments in technology, the future of our membership, scholarship and educational opportunities for our students, and in the recruitment and retention of top clergy and senior staff. Learn More Planned Giving - L'Dor V'Dor Bequest Society Sustaining Tzedek Volunteer One of the greatest gifts someone can give is that of a legacy – a gift that will provide for the present and future of their community. A planned gift can make a lasting impact and is perhaps the simplest way to provide an endowment or other special gift to Leo Baeck Temple. Naming LBT as a beneficiary for a set amount or percentage of one’s estate in either a will or trust can create your Jewish legacy and fund our future. Learn More The Talmud teaches “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh b’zeh” – “all Jews are responsible for one another.” Leo Baeck Temple has long embraced the conviction that members who are financially able should be counted upon to help those of our members who are less able to afford membership. Sustaining Tzedek at LBT maintains our egalitarian community, where no one is denied the opportunities of temple membership because of monetary difficulties. Learn More While there are many ways to contribute financially, another important way to give to Leo Baeck Temple is with your time. Whether it be serving on an event committee, spearheading our social justice initiatives, or volunteering to call another congregant in need, we could always use your support. To get involved, click below and complete the interest form. Volunteer now Donations/Tributes An option for a donation is to make a tribute. Tribute donations may be made to honor a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion, to express sympathy, to honor the memory of a loved one, or simply to say thank you. Suggested minimum contributions is $36 per tribute, and may be designated in general support to Leo Baeck Temple or to a particular fund or program. Tributes can be made online or by mailing a check to P.O. Box 418, Montvale, NJ 07645, Attn: Leo Baeck Temple. Death & Mourning One of the most important aspects of synagogue life is that people are there for each other at times of crisis, pain, and loss. At the time of a need, call us first so that we can be available for you and your family. LBT’s Chesed Companionship Program is about building relationships, showing up for and supporting our mourners through life’s most challenging moments and transitions. Chesed is structured to bring comfort to LBT mourners by providing a specially trained LBT congregant who walks alongside them. Supported by a grant from Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries. In accordance with Jewish tradition, some of our members “sit shiva,” receiving comforting guests at their home following the service. While the tradition is seven days, many people observe for one or sometimes two or three days. A rabbi, cantor, or layperson will officiate at shiva minyan services in the home of the bereaved for one service or up to the full week of shiva. LBT provides appropriate prayer books as needed.

The shiva service culminates in the recitation of Mourner’s Kaddish. Mourners may choose to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish during "shloshim" (the first 30 days following the death of a loved one) and on the first anniversary. Traditionally around eleven months, an unveiling takes place as the stone is placed at the grave. There is no set requirements for an unveiling so you can make it what you want it to be. Contact the temple if you want assistance with planning an unveiling service. Connect with Us Our LBT clergy want to be there for you in your time of need or celebration.
