New Park Coming to the City of Lynwood! Read On... Search Government Services How Do I... About Lynwood Home NewsFlash City of Lynwood Addresses Public Safety Concerns Near Helen Keller Elementary School News Flash City of Lynwood Addresses Public Safety Concerns Near Helen Keller Elementary School Home - Secondary News Posted on April 20, 2026 Our community has raised serious concerns about sex worker solicitation activity along Long Beach Boulevard, particularly near Helen Keller Elementary School, and the City has been working to address it. We hear you. The safety of our children and the dignity of our neighborhoods are at the heart of everything we do. We want our families, students, and school staff to know that their concerns are not only being heard—they are driving action. What We Are Doing The City has already taken several concrete steps, and more are underway: Motel Compliance Program —The City launched a compliance program targeting nearby motel establishments that may contribute to solicitation activity along the corridor. Red Curb Installation —The City is moving forward with red curb installation along Long Beach Boulevard between Carlin Avenue and Palm Street, eliminating the stopping and standing activity that enables vehicle-based solicitation. Sheriff's Deputy Presence —LASD has committed to stationing a deputy in front of Helen Keller Elementary during morning drop-off (8:00–9:00 a.m.) and afternoon pick-up (2:30–3:30 p.m.) for the next several weeks. Lighting and Camera Assessment —The City is evaluating enhanced lighting and additional camera installation along the corridor to deter activity and support public safety. Regional Coordination —City staff are participating in a regional working group alongside law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office to develop shared strategies across affected communities. City–School District Collaborative —The City Council and Lynwood Unified School District have established a formal, Brown Act-compliant joint collaborative to improve communication and align priorities on shared concerns, including public safety near schools. The City and District are scheduling the first meeting of this collaborative now. Why This Is Complex We want to be honest with our community about the challenges we face. Individuals engaged in solicitation activity are aware of their legal rights to move freely in public spaces. While their conduct is deeply inappropriate, especially near a school, it does not always meet the legal threshold required for a citation or arrest under California law. Enforcement requires specific elements to be witnessed directly by a Sheriff's deputy. We are working within those legal realities while pursuing every available tool to protect our community. This is not a problem with a single or immediate solution, but the City will not stop working on it. We encourage residents to report suspicious activity to Century Station. Your observations matter and help us respond more effectively.
