Children who struggle with any aspect of their learning, due to learning differences and/or social-emotional challenges, are supported at Marin Horizon through our Student Support Services. Our learning specialists and school counselor work alongside teachers and parents to develop student support plans. Our Program Marin Horizon offers a child-centered, developmentally based academic program. The majority of our students enter the school at the pre-school level before any learning differences or issues become apparent to teachers and parents.   When learning issues are identified, the school makes every effort to work with parents and outside specialists to determine strategies and accommodations that help children find success in our program. Agreements and timelines that result from conferences will be formally documented with copies for the school and parents.   Learning issues can be complex, and every child presents a unique learning profile. As children grow older some issues may resolve themselves, while others may persist and interfere more seriously in a child’s success as academic expectations increase. New issues may also present themselves at later stages of development. In some cases, periodic review may be needed to evaluate how Marin Horizon can best serve an individual child’s needs.   Anna Varnay-Truong Director, Curriculum & Student Support Services Anna joined Marin Horizon in 2019. Prior to her arrival, she served in roles in instructional leadership in San Francisco Unified School District and the Alt School. She began her career as a classroom teacher and has taught grades 1-8. She earned a B.A. in Sociology from Columbia University, and an M.Ed. from UCLA.  hr Ashleigh Brody Student Support Teacher Sarah Janoff-Brinn School Counselor Julia Ripperton Assistant Director of Lower School and Learning Specialist Anna Varnay-Truong Director of Student Support Services Carla Wilkins Middle School Student Support Teacher extract-horizontal-rule-1 extract-horizontal-rule-2 footer-container footer-location 305 Montford Ave Mill Valley CA 94941 (415) 388-8408 Marin Horizon School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. This commitment is a key element of our philosophy and illustrates the school’s aim to equip all of our students to be successful in both local and global communities.  Leading by example, Marin Horizon spearheads launch of Horizon Community School in Marin City. In 2017, Marin Horizon School forged an innovative partnership with Community Action Marin, a public agency, to provide quality early childhood education in Marin City through a new program, the Horizon Community School. Now in its seventh year, Horizon Community School serves over 45 children ages 2 through 4, providing essential preparation for success wherever they matriculate for kindergarten and beyond.  The partnership honors the Marin Horizon School goal to foster and respect diversity within the local community and the world, to provide real-world experiences that promote collaboration and multicultural respect. It aligns with the school's overall strategic plan to build relationships outside of its immediate community. The interaction among the campuses benefits all students as diverse learning environments promote higher student achievement and benefit all cultural groups. DEI is in our DNA. DEI isn't a checkbox at Marin Horizon. It is in the fabric of everything we do…whether it is discussing the best way to build a curriculum, putting on community events, recruiting faculty, selecting students…the diversity of backgrounds and ideas makes Marin Horizon a unique community and institution.  Why does it Matter?  Diversity drives excellence.  Research shows that diverse groups make better decisions, solve problems more effectively, and generally experience better outcomes than homogeneous groups. At Marin Horizon, we have always known that academic education by itself is not sufficient to prepare students for the world they will encounter after graduation. Becoming innovative, ethical thinkers and conscious leaders of the future requires direct exposure to diverse perspectives and life experiences today.   Horizon Community School Recognized as a model for putting ideas into action, Horizon Community School is a program of Marin Horizon School that offers a Preschool program (tuition free) to 45 students each year from the neighboring Marin City. Horizon Community School unveiled its brand new campus in the Spring of 2025. Learn more Culturally-Rich Curriculum At Marin Horizon, diversity is purposefully embedded into our curriculum. Every grade’s curriculum includes a range of voices and perspectives, whether through literature, civic discussions, or current events. Students explore topics that reflect the real world around them—race, culture, religion, and society—building understanding, empathy, and confidence along the way. A Diverse Community The Marin Horizon community is diverse. More than 35% of students identify as a person of color, and we enjoy celebrating different cultures and traditions in our classrooms and across campus. Beyond race and ethnicity, gender, identity, and sexual preference are appreciated. We want every student to feel seen, respected, and valued for who they are. It’s this sense of belonging that helps our community thrive and teaches students what it truly means to be part of a compassionate, inclusive world. extract-horizontal-rule-1 extract-horizontal-rule-2 footer-container footer-location 305 Montford Ave Mill Valley CA 94941 (415) 388-8408 Marin Horizon School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. Students are encouraged to think critically, adapt to challenges, and approach the world with kindness. In our classrooms, traditional subjects intertwine with real-world problem-solving, preparing students for an ever-changing global landscape. Our curriculum extends beyond four walls, incorporating outdoor experiences, the arts, and community involvement. This balance ensures that Marin Horizon students not only excel academically but also understand the importance of empathy and community in their everyday lives.  hr Our Mindsets We are insatiably curious. We believe in sparking curiosity in our students and nurturing their love of learning - from Toddler all the way through the 8th grade. We encourage them to follow their curiosity and pursue their unique interests. We are complex thinkers. Through project-based learning we purposefully develop connections between subjects at every stage of learning. We believe that the best way to stoke a curious mind is through rigorous, progressive, comprehensive academics that are rooted in a depth and foundation from the youngest ages. We embrace challenge. From the very beginning we are giving our students multi-layered questions to wrestle with, ones without simple answers. Our students become tenacious, eager problem solvers, who embrace technology as a tool and instead of asking ‘why,’ they ask, ‘why not?’ We encourage students to risk failure because we know it’s an essential part of the learning process.     We are active community members. We challenge our students to be inclusive leaders, big dreamers, and citizens of the world. We believe that every child can make a difference in the world. We give our students the tools to make a difference right now. We have a voice. Our students are confident about advocating for themselves and each other. We ensure that our students are known, heard and appreciated as individuals by their teachers and the broader school community.   Take The Next Step Inquire Visit Apply extract-horizontal-rule-1 extract-horizontal-rule-2 footer-container footer-location 305 Montford Ave Mill Valley CA 94941 (415) 388-8408 Marin Horizon School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. At Marin Horizon, the Lower School years are the essential building blocks of a child's education, laying the groundwork for a lifelong love of learning.   Our Lower School students build self-confidence and moral courage, develop communication skills, and practice how to work cooperatively in a joyful, safe, and academically engaging classroom setting.  A Journey of Self-Discovery and Intellectual Growth Our young scholars are embarking on a journey of self-discovery and intellectual growth. They learn to see the world with inquisitive eyes, asking questions and seeking answers that fuel their understanding. They begin to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. And they begin to appreciate the beauty of different cultures, the logic of mathematics, and the creativity of literature.  Embracing challenges with resilience and collaborating with empathy, our students grow into confident thinkers, caring classmates, and responsible community members. They are not only absorbing information but gaining a deeper understanding of self, community, and the world. They are shaping their personalities and developing the skills and values that will guide them throughout their lives. A Deep Sense of Belonging Marin Horizon recognizes that children benefit from an environment where social and emotional growth is intentionally nurtured and developed. Our Lower School endeavors to create an environment for our students that allows them to feel comfortable, safe, and confident, creating a sense of deep belonging. We celebrate our differences, share our perspectives, and cultivate a vibrant community. Warmly Victoria   Victoria Huerta-Miller Director, Lower School   Meeting Students at Their Academic Frontier Our approach involves students in hands-on, interdisciplinary projects grounded in solid academics. They learn to explore, create, and problem-solve in their own ways, supported by a solid structure. The result is deeper, more meaningful learning that lasts long after the lesson has ended. With intentional class sizes and a 12:1 student to teacher ratio in the classroom, we get to know our students deeply. Our students thrive in this environment. They gain a sense of trust and security to learn at their academic frontier--a place where they will be optimally engaged and challenged intellectually. 80% of Marin Horizon students are performing at or above grade level among independent schools. 90-100% of our Lower School students are reading at or above grade level. any text Curriculum At-A-Glance Mathematics Social Studies Language Arts Science & Engineering Spanish Arts Physical Education Mathematics Marin Horizon’s math curriculum provides students with an exceptionally strong mathematical foundation ranging from developing number fluency in the lower grades to solving complex equations in the upper grades. Challenges are viewed as learning opportunities, and students are guided to develop a growth mindset, learning from mistakes and developing the perseverance to seek solutions. Students are encouraged to find the joy in solving for the unknown as well as to make connections between concepts and see their application in the world around them. Through differentiated experiences, collaborative projects, and inspiring explorations, students emerge confident and enthusiastic math learners.  In the Lower School, we follow the  Bridges Math curriculum which emphasizes the importance of the students gaining a conceptual understanding of math. When students are taught algorithms and procedures before they get the chance to explore the underlying principles of mathematics, you might lose a few. By giving them the opportunity to experiment with how numbers work, students come up with multiple strategies to approach new problems. Sequenced Mathematics Trajectory     Social Studies Designed for students to understand cultures and history and establish relevance to present times, the curriculum focuses on in-depth, project-based learning, framed around essential questions. Social Studies classes are taught in mixed grade groupings, opening up opportunities for academic interactions with a larger number of students and providing deeper levels of collaborative learning experiences.  In the Lower School, our focus is on developing cultural competence and understanding interconnections between humans, animals, and the earth. Learners reflect on their own lives, of others in their community, and the world at large.   Sequenced Social Studies Trajectory     Language Arts The literacy curriculum is designed to develop in students the foundation needed to become successful and independent readers and writers. Using evidence-based practices, teachers focus on cultivating the joy of reading and the art of expression. In the Lower School, students experience a systematic and explicit word study program with elements of word recognition: phonics, morphology, orthographic mapping, phonemic awareness, and syllabication. The curriculum incorporates a wealth of reading materials from a diverse range of genres, providing children with an opportunity to utilize their newly honed skills in tangible contexts. This methodology underscores the hands-on application of their learning and cultivates a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance in the students.  Sequenced Language Arts Trajectory     Science & Engineering Marin Horizon’s science curriculum promotes scientific inquiry, critical t Alumni - Marin Horizon School Skip To Main Content menu-container mobile-top-container menu-trigger-container Close Menu header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login mobile-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search mobile-main-nav ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners header-container logo-container logo-image logo-image-interior menu-trigger-container Open Menu right-container right-top-container header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login search-container trigger-search Open Search search-popup Close site-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search right-bottom-container nav-main ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners Horizontal Nav Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners In This Section Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners Hey, Alumni! Read on. Before discovering his calling to teach, Sean’s life was a whirlwind of Los Angeles graveyard shifts and rock-and-roll. He worked long hours in a film vault color-correcting The X-Files so that he could play in his band during the rest of the day.  But it was a rough existence and he sought a way out of the late night work. An unexpected call from a former professor led him to a middle school Latin position—a job he initially accepted under the mistaken impression it was a university-level post. (Sean had studied ancient Greek and Latin at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.) These early years were a bit of a balancing act: he taught Latin by day and played in his band by night, often showing up to the classroom in ripped jeans and a bit sleep deprived. He eventually left teaching to tour Japan with his 60s inspired pop band, Bikeride (you can still watch/listen to the band here - that’s Sean How on the keyboards!), and later found success directing commercials for Mattel Toys. Here's the band Bikeride back in the day! See if you can pick out teacher Sean.   However, he longed to be back in the classroom. After returning as an art substitute at the independent Westside Neighborhood School , he was challenged to lead a fifth-grade class dominated by high-energy boys. By combining his love of music into the curriculum—choreographing Thriller and practicing African step dance—he helped transform the group's reputation. He also cut his teeth in teaching all subjects—including math.  This pivotal year shifted his perspective from viewing teaching as a temporary gig to embracing it as a career. So when an opportunity opened up to teach middle school math, he jumped at it. In many ways, it felt familiar: he’d gone from teaching the language of the Romans to teaching the language of numbers. And he’s never looked back. For Sean, middle school is the "perfect middle ground" of human development.  Fifteen years later, during Covid when Sean and his wife were looking for a new and greener place to raise their young son, 4th grader Declan, an opportunity opened for him to teach Middle School math at Marin Horizon.  Sean has now been teaching middle school math for 20 years, including five here at Marin Horizon! When asked what he loves about this age group, Sean says that while high schoolers are almost "fully baked" and younger children too raw, middle schoolers possess a unique blend of high-level capability and still maintain a childlike silliness.      “The middle school for me, it's the perfect middle ground of kids who have enough experience to do the sort of stuff that I know I'm going to throw at them–because I will definitely throw high school level thinking and methodologies and strategies and conversations at them–but they're still childlike, so all my goofy dad jokes and all the silliness still resonates with them.” He is drawn to their eagerness to prove their maturity, even as they remain delightfully unpredictable. Sean also knows from his own experience that middle school can be a tough time, so he thinks it’s important to create an environment for kids to have as many positive foundational experiences–whether social or educational. From regular to accelerated math and beyond Sean teaches across the full middle school math spectrum, which gives him a strong view of how students develop over time. He teaches math to all of the 6th graders, building a common foundation, and this year he’s teaching accelerated math in both 7th and 8th grade.  Sean describes the accelerated math program as student-driven when it comes to placement. While teachers offer guidance, students ultimately choose whether they want the extra challenge.  In the classroom, Sean’s approach is often ambitious. He looks for openings to extend beyond the standard curriculum when students are ready. For example, with his accelerated 7th graders, he incorporates topics like trigonometry and geometric concepts such as apothems. His instinct is to deepen understanding by connecting ideas and showing students how math builds over time, not just adhering to grade-level concepts.  At the same time, he’s seeking to make real-world connections for students. For instance, he might talk about the number of listens for Spotify songs, and how you can monetize that. Or when he's teaching simple interest and compounding to his 6th graders, he’ll demonstrate how useful math can be when they arrive at college and they are bombarded by credit card offers, or when it’s time to get a mortgage on their future house. Composite geometric art yields “galorbo fruittodzillo” and “Italian brainrot” One of the projects exhibited in Sean’s classroom is both very curious and very cool. As part of the sixth and seventh grade geometry units, Sean gave students license to follow their imagination to create “composite geometric art”, combining shapes into both random and intentional figures.      “I'm such a math nerd that like, I love the art and I love that they get excited about the art, but for me, the most exciting thing is to get up close and read all the, the actual calculations and the numbers for area and perimeter.”  Teaching Math is a Day at the Beach Se Ways to Give - Marin Horizon School Skip To Main Content menu-container mobile-top-container menu-trigger-container Close Menu header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login mobile-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search mobile-main-nav ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners header-container logo-container logo-image logo-image-interior menu-trigger-container Open Menu right-container right-top-container header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login search-container trigger-search Open Search search-popup Close site-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search right-bottom-container nav-main ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners Horizontal Nav Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners In This Section Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners   Ways to Give Horizon Fund: Our Annual Giving Program Each year, the Horizon Fund is the school’s fundraising priority. From the get-go, we knew Horizon Community School would be here for the long haul. We knew that an impactful education includes so much more than learning to read, write, add, subtract. It includes social and emotional growth; play and fun; warm and nurturing relationships with teachers; celebrating students’ cultures, similarities and differences; healthy food and exercise; identifying and accessing care for learning differences; and advancing our teachers’ careers.  We built this program with intention, and we have now built our new campus with the same level of attentiveness and dedication. Our new school, scheduled to open in January, represents the deep roots we have cultivated in the community—with our families and caregivers, students, staff, volunteers and donors.  How do I feel HCS’s impact so deeply in my heart? I see it every day—the unique magic of HCS. I see it in the faces of our parents as they drop off their children each morning, feeling reassured and able to focus on their own studies or careers. I’m proud that our teacher turnover rate remains incredibly low, and that teachers return to HCS after having children of their own, choosing to continue building their careers here. I see our staff continually refining their teaching methods, inspired by professional development opportunities. I watch our families form a vibrant, supportive community, where they recognize and celebrate the beauty of their impact on one another.  And I see it in you, our dedicated supporters. Your respect, appreciation and commitment help make all of this possible.  I look forward to welcoming you all From Recyclables to Fabulous Fashion: the Annual Green Fashion Show (written by student Rachel M.) | Posts Details/Default Board Post Page Skip To Main Content menu-container mobile-top-container menu-trigger-container Close Menu header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login mobile-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search mobile-main-nav ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners header-container logo-container logo-image logo-image-interior menu-trigger-container Open Menu right-container right-top-container header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login search-container trigger-search Open Search search-popup Close site-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search right-bottom-container nav-main ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners Horizontal Nav In This Section From Recyclables to Fabulous Fashion: the Annual Green Fashion Show (written by student Rachel M.) From Recyclables to Fabulous Fashion: the Annual Green Fashion Show (written by student Rachel M.) Apr 28 2026 This article is written by student journalist and eighth-grader Rachel M.   While the Wildcats that roam MHS have many identities, they recently took on the mindset of fashion designers. It was the Green Fashion Show! The Green Fashion Show is a cherished yearly tradition–hosted and planned by the student-led Green Team–where learners of all ages design their very own eco-friendly outfits to proudly display on the runway. The rules were simple: no buying materials (it all had to be reused), the ensemble had to be ready by April 1st, and of course, it must be fabulously fashionable!     The show is sponsored and organized by the Green Team club The Green Fashion Show has been around for years. This April, students gathered together to create their outfits with friends and peers. While working in teams can be challenging, it teaches students to persevere, listen, learn, and contribute. Thanks to the Green Team, MHS Wildcats enjoyed this fun, artsy learning experience once again. Student Green Team leader, eighth-grader Nora C, shared that this is her favorite MHS tradition and that it inspires everyone to participate and be eco-friendly. The Green Team is a favorite Marin Horizon club with the main purpose of bringing joy and an eco-friendly mindset to our school community. When speaking with Green Team advisor Carla Wilkins, she shared that both she and the club members were confident this would be the best fashion show yet. With such a dedicated advisor, the fashion show wouldn’t be possible. Students have created many types of pieces to display this year 6th graders Shae, Eleanor and Lena made fashionable newspaper dresses with frills and flowers all the way to the hot-glued hem of their skirts. Fourth-grader Audrey wore her own cascading paper skirt that effortlessly flowed in the wind as she strutted down the runway.        Two years ago, Anika A., now a student at Convent & Stuart Hall High School, made a flowy frock from high school brochures representing her possible future around the Bay Area. Looking back, Anika said that while it was difficult it taught her how to be patient and diligent when designing with these unconventional materials.  And these are just a few examples—the possibilities are endless! In addition to being a designer, students could also walk as models on the runway at Marin Horizon School. Just take your pick—from shoes to dresses to pants—these designers created amazing pieces for others to style. At Marin Horizon, this is just one of the many ways we encourage student passions. While the end goal is a competition, students learned to enjoy both the ups and downs—the disagreements and successes, the rushed details and the final piece. The beauty of this fashion show is that you don’t have to win to experience the glamorous, eco-friendly life of a green designer.     extract-horizontal-rule-1 extract-horizontal-rule-2 footer-container footer-location 305 Montford Ave Mill Valley CA 94941 (415) 388-8408 Marin Horizon School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. It builds meaningful connections between students of all ages, fosters a sense of belonging, and strengthens our entire community. At Marin Horizon, each of our second- through eighth-grades students is paired with a younger buddy in Primary through first grade. Older students visit their younger buddies in their classrooms on a regular basis. And buddies also come together for special events throughout the school year. The true magic of the program is revealed in spontaneous moments when a first grader runs to hug an eighth grader on the playground or a sixth grader pauses to comfort a kindergartener who is having trouble saying goodbye to mom.  At Marin Horizon, big kids become mentors and our youngest students find someone to look up to. Older students embrace their responsibilities, knowing that little eyes are always on them. This means that our oldest kids remain connected to their younger selves, while also embracing the value of maturity. extract-horizontal-rule-1 extract-horizontal-rule-2 footer-container footer-location 305 Montford Ave Mill Valley CA 94941 (415) 388-8408 Marin Horizon School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. We also love the setting, it’s hard to beat the backdrop of the campus!” says Annie Prakash.     In fact community and the love of outdoors are central themes for the Prakash family. They moved to Mill Valley in 2020, when their oldest son, Zane—now a kindergartener at Marin Horizon—was born. Their middle child, Maya, is in Primary, and their youngest, Kiran, will join the Toddler program this fall. “Community” at Marin Horizon shows up in many ways for the Prakash family—from strong partnerships with teachers and a welcoming campus environment to volunteer opportunities and personal connections. “We love how the school treats every child as an individual and meets them where they are. It has been wonderful to watch teachers work with our children to help them make the most of classroom opportunities. The teachers and administration are so quick to partner with you, it truly feels like one team that is all working to create the best for your child,” says Annie. She continues, “Zane and Maya have loved MHS. Zane is now in Kindergarten and it’s been great to see him feel like such a member of the student community. Zane particularly loves any time spent with Stevie and loves learning new things in enrichment classes. Ceramics has been a big hit and Maya is excited to start soon.”     In addition, the Prakash family have enjoyed the opportunity to visit their kids’ classes and share the tradition of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. “Our kids, especially, are excited to talk about it, and we love the opportunity to be in the class. Aswin created a quick PowerPoint, we light diyas, have a sweet, and usually do a craft creating rangolis (a traditional Indian art form, where decorative patterns are created on the ground or floor). It's a lot of fun and a tradition we love!” shares Annie. As a family, they love to be outside. On any given weekend, you might find them swimming, hiking, and biking at playgrounds on the weekend. “With three high energy kids, it’s a form of survival!” jokes Aswin. They also love to travel, often planning trips around sporting events, as well as visits to cities and beaches. We’re delighted to have the Prakash family as part of our community, where their love of connection, culture, and the outdoors in many ways reflects the spirit of Marin Horizon.   extract-horizontal-rule-1 extract-horizontal-rule-2 footer-container footer-location 305 Montford Ave Mill Valley CA 94941 (415) 388-8408 Marin Horizon School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. Academically, they are well prepared—ready for the rigors of high school and beyond. Socially, they navigate new environments with openness. Coming from a small, tight-knit community, they learn to branch out, make new friends, and explore diverse perspectives. They engage in athletics, arts, journalism, music, and service, eager to discover new passions and contribute to their school communities. Perhaps most importantly, Marin Horizon graduates are self-advocates. They know how to seek support, build relationships with teachers, and use their voices with confidence. Whether on stage, in the classroom, or on the field, they take creative risks, speak up, and lead with authenticity. hr High School Acceptances Our graduates choose to attend a wide range of independent and public high schools. Rather than approaching the transition from middle school to high school as an endpoint, we view it as an opportunity for continued skill development, emotional growth, and student empowerment. Importantly, we want students and families to feel supported throughout their high school transition experience. While the majority of our students elect to apply to and attend independent schools, we feel strongly that students electing to attend public school are celebrated along with their peers. Above all, we want our students to derive benefits from the process of choosing high school, rather than tying success to a particular outcome. Finding the right "fit" for each student For families that apply to independent schools, we begin the process by focusing on finding the right “fit” for each student. When students emphasize identifying the right school, rather than the “best” school, they are able to present themselves with confidence and authenticity, which typically yields better outcomes for applicants. Students are encouraged to take the lead throughout their application process. They practice essential skills including researching, self-advocacy, resume building, interviewing, personal essay writing, and, ultimately, succeeding with grace and coping with disappointment. In the end, students are able to reflect on their achievements during their application process and recognize their own successes, regardless of outcome. At Marin Horizon, we are proud to say that our emphasis on the process yields excellent results year after year. Our students are consistently accepted at premier high schools throughout the Bay Area, with nearly every applicant finding a home at their first or second choice school.  95% of Marin Horizon graduates will enroll at their 1st or 2nd choice high school. 100% of our accelerated-track math students will enter high school on track to reach a Calculus AB class or higher. And non-accelerated track math students will cover two thirds of typical freshman year curriculum in 8th grade. Marin Horizon graduates consistently place into second and third level Spanish classes their freshman year in high school. I hear the symphony of joyful learning; I see the interactions among children and caring adults, and I feel the sense of community that sets Marin Horizon School apart. Our students learn how to think, not just what to know. Every day, they think deeply, ask questions, collaborate, and take intellectual risks. Through hands-on projects, discussions, and problem-solving, students become critical thinkers prepared to adapt as the world changes. Our students stretch themselves. Whether in the classroom, on the stage, or on the trail, students build confidence and resilience by pushing their boundaries and learning from mistakes. They do this surrounded by adults who pay close attention, offer direct feedback, and provide steady guidance. Our students belong here and in the world. Small classes, close relationships, and shared adventures create a sense of belonging that extends beyond the campus. Each student emerges from our program confident in their voice and with a sense of purpose, preparing them for meaningful participation in the world beyond the classroom. As Interim Head of School, I am honored to guide Marin Horizon during this transition. I invite you to visit, ask questions, and see firsthand why Marin Horizon is such a special place to grow, learn, and belong.  Warmly, Andy Davies Interim Head of School Marin Horizon School   Andy Davies INTERIM HEAD OF SCHOOL Andy brings over 30 years of experience in humanities education, spanning grades 5 through the college level in both public and independent schools. At Marin Horizon, the middle school years are a time of exploration and development, both academically, socially, and as a citizen of the world. It’s a time of extraordinary learning and growth.  Students are encouraged to work on self-advocacy and academic resilience as they develop critical thinking skills. And they are encouraged to celebrate differences and share their perspectives in an expanding community. Every morning, students gather in homeroom groups, grounding their experience with an advisor and a group of peers. Longer advisory meetings happen weekly and create a sense of belonging within the larger community. Our student-led Middle School Meeting is a gathering time to feel a sense of commonality while also celebrating the unique talents and interests of the student presenters. Above all, the Middle School endeavors to help students take ownership of their own education and graduate with a strong sense of self and a desire to contribute positively to the world. Regards, Ben     Ben Fussiner Director, Middle School Ben joined Marin Horizon in 2021. Prior to his arrival, he served as Head of Middle School at Friends Seminary in New York, Assistant Head of School at Turning Point in Los Angeles, and as Assistant Director of Elementary School at Wildwood School in Los Angeles. Ben earned a B.S. in Liberal Studies from Southern Connecticut State University, and an Ed.M. in Education from Harvard University.  any text How do we prepare our students to be critical thinkers in a world of unlimited information? We balance academic rigor and structure with imaginative, student-driven learning.   When students leave Marin Horizon, they walk away with a strong academic foundation and the confidence to think critically and use what they’ve learned in real life. We see creativity and academic discipline not as opposites, but as partners in great learning. Here, students are encouraged to think outside the proverbial box while mastering the fundamentals. Our approach involves students in hands-on, interdisciplinary projects grounded in solid academics. They learn to explore, create, and problem-solve in their own ways, supported by a solid structure. The result is deeper, more meaningful learning that lasts long after the lesson has ended. We push students to venture outside their comfort zones, while surrounding them with unwavering support.  We believe that students do best when they are both challenged and supported. Marin Horizon sets high academic expectations and encourages risk-taking, but does so in a nurturing environment, meeting each child where they are in their learning journey. We encourage our students to try hard things and view setbacks as part of the learning process. Many students often hold back in traditional classrooms, afraid of looking bad or getting a poor grade—but at MHS, trial and error is celebrated. Whether our middle schoolers are repeatedly launching and redesigning pumpkin catapults or tackling complex projects, students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, driven by curiosity rather than being spoon-fed information. Ultimately most of the kids, through tenacity and determination, go on to produce winning products or solutions. 80% of Marin Horizon students are performing at or above grade level among independents schools. Marin Horizon graduates consistently place into second and third level Spanish classes their freshman year in high school. any text   Curriculum At-A-Glance Mathematics Social Studies Language Arts Science & Engineering Spanish Arts Physical Education Mathematics Marin Horizon’s math curriculum provides students with an exceptionally strong mathematical foundation ranging from developing number fluency in the lower grades to solving complex equations in the upper grades. Marin Horizon's Upper School math program offers an "accelerated" option designed for math enthusiasts, where qualified students progress at a faster pace. These 7th and 8th grade students cover additional concepts from high-school, and typically place well entering High School. Sequenced Mathematics Trajectory     Social Studies Designed for students to understand cultures and history and establish relevance to present times, the curriculum focuses on in-depth, project-based learning, framed around essential questions. In the Middle School, the focus is on developing skills within the context of studying other cultures, ideas, and issues from the past. With an emphasis on close reading, research, primary documents and critical thinking, students ask thoughtful questions and examine various perspectives.  Social Studies classe Inquire - Marin Horizon School Skip To Main Content menu-container mobile-top-container menu-trigger-container Close Menu header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login mobile-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search mobile-main-nav ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners header-container logo-container logo-image logo-image-interior menu-trigger-container Open Menu right-container right-top-container header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login search-container trigger-search Open Search search-popup Close site-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search right-bottom-container nav-main ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners Horizontal Nav Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation In This Section Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation Let's Get Started With An Inquiry Form Marin Horizon is a place where we kindle a deep passion for learning, kindness, and positive change in our dynamic world. As part of this mission, we recognize the vital role that technology can play in modern learning. From interactive digital tools that support personalized instruction to platforms that connect our classrooms with the wider world, technology enhances student engagement, encourages creativity, and fosters critical thinking. However, we also understand that meaningful learning extends beyond a screen. That’s why we are equally dedicated to creating opportunities for face-to-face collaboration, hands-on exploration, outdoor learning, and the development of interpersonal skills. Our approach is one of balance: using technology as a powerful educational tool, not a replacement for real-world connection and authentic experiences. We believe that by thoughtfully integrating technology with traditional and experiential learning, we are equipping our students with the adaptability, resilience, and depth of understanding they need to thrive in all areas of life. any text Technology Use Guidelines Lower School Students in Grades K-4 are still experiencing rapid brain growth and learn best through hands-on experiences, play, and face-to-face interactions. While technology can provide engaging and educational content, it’s important to be intentional about how and when it is used. We know that many parents/guardians have chosen to delay giving their child access to phones or tablets—and we wholeheartedly support that decision. Still, we recognize how challenging that stance can be to maintain. Outlined here are our technology guidelines and recommendations for out of school: 1. Delay Personal Devices Lower school students benefit most from shared, supervised use of technology, rather than personal ownership of smartphones or tablets. If a device is necessary (for travel or communication), we suggest: Consider providing a basic “dumb” phone—limited to texting and calling, without internet access. Make it clear that the device belongs to you, and that your child is simply using it. Actively monitor your child’s online activity. Many apps can alert you to potentially harmful language or content. This last point is especially important. Just as you once held your child’s hand while teaching them to cross the street, they need your guidance as they learn how to safely navigate the digital world—likely through their high school years and beyond. 2. Hold Off on Group Chats and Social Media Children in grades K–4 are not developmentally ready for group chats or social media. These platforms often introduce them to misunderstandings, exclusion, and content they are not yet prepared to process. 3. Limit Screen Time to Quality Content If you choose to allow screen time, keep it short and focused on high-quality, age-appropriate content. Whenever possible, engage with your child during screen time to help them process what they see and connect it to real life. Introducing digital communication too early can lead to stress, confusion, or emotional harm. Waiting until children are more socially and emotionally mature helps lay the foundation for healthy digital habits, stronger self-esteem, and more thoughtful online interactions. We recognize that each family’s approach to technology is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Our aim is to partner with parents in making informed choices and to support families who choose to delay giving young children phones or tablets. Upper School For students in Grades 5–8, technology can be an incredibly powerful tool for learning—but it requires thoughtful guidance. This age group is developing greater independence, digital skills, and curiosity, but still needs strong boundaries and support to use technology wisely and responsibly. 1. Set Clear Expectations and Boundaries Define when and where devices can be used (e.g. not during meals or bedtime). Use screen time limits to promote balance between online and offline activities. Encourage “tech-free zones” or times during the day. 2. Use Technology with Purpose Prioritize educational apps, platforms, and tools that support critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration (e.g., Google Workspace, Flip, Canva, coding platforms, etc.). Encourage students to use tech for creation, not just consumption (e.g., making videos, podcasts, digital art, or presentations). 3. Encourage Digital Literacy and Citizenship Teach students to evaluate online information critically (What’s a credible source? What’s misinformation?). Discuss privacy, respectful communication, and appropriate sharing on digital platforms. Use frameworks like Common Sense Media’s Digital Citizenship Curriculum. 4. Promote Tech-Life Balance Ensure students engage in physical activity, social interaction, and hands-on learning daily. Encourage hobbies or interests that are tech-free (sports, art, music, reading). Model healthy tech habits as adults—students are watching! 5. Monitor and Guide, Not Spy Keep devices in shared family spaces whenever possible. Use parental controls as support tools, but pair them with open conversations about trust and responsibility. Encourage students to talk openly about what they’re doing or seeing online. 6. Foster Responsibility and Independence Teach time management using digital tools (like calendars, to-do lists, reminders). Let students have increasing autonomy with tech as the Community Association - Marin Horizon School Skip To Main Content menu-container mobile-top-container menu-trigger-container Close Menu header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login mobile-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search mobile-main-nav ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners header-container logo-container logo-image logo-image-interior menu-trigger-container Open Menu right-container right-top-container header-portals-nav News/Stories Calendar Summer Camp Horizon Community School Inquire Login search-container trigger-search Open Search search-popup Close site-search Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search right-bottom-container nav-main ABOUT What Sets Us Apart Head of School Welcome New Head of School Search Mission & Mindsets Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Faculty Administration Board of Trustees Employment ADMISSIONS Welcome Key Entry Points Inquire Visit Marin Horizon Applying to Marin Horizon Tuition & Affordability High School Matriculation Transportation ACADEMICS Academic Program Middle School (5-8) Lower School (K-4) Primary (Ages 3-5) Toddler (Age 2) Outdoor & Experiential Education Student Support Team STUDENT LIFE Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association SUPPORT US Making an Impact Alumni Ways to Give Make a Gift Merchant Partners Horizontal Nav Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association In This Section Enrichment Classes Aftercare Athletics Arts Buddy Program Summer Camp Smart Tech Habits Community Association Community Association At Marin Horizon, the vibrant Community Association is an important part of our community. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled http://www.marinhorizon.org/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
