Who We Are and How We Help
At Marin Montessori, we see education as an act of hope.
Every day at Marin Montessori School, we empower students with the time and space to dig deep, to learn by doing, to tackle real challenges, and to ignite their passions.
When students take ownership of their learning, they develop the skills to confidently navigate academics and life.
Here, students are confident and independent. They explore their curiosities, learn from mistakes, and iterate—essential skills they’ll need to master in order to live successful, meaningful lives.
MMS is the school where curious minds and good hearts come to flourish. We’re a community that cares for each other. We’re down to earth and aspirational. That’s why we say:
Marin Montessori: Grounded & Soaring.

It’s no secret that our world is changing at a rapid pace, but it may be surprising just how effective the Montessori approach in our Elementary program is at solidifying in students the qualities experts know will be most important for our children’s futures: a passion for learning and problem-solving. To get there, students need to be pilots in their education and not just passengers. We offer a program that’s ideal for this moment of disruption and possibility. The Elementary curriculum is vast. While every child learns the essentials (e.g. mathematics, language, science, history, art, etc.), students are not limited by a curriculum for their single grade level. Each child is given time, space, and support to dive deeply into their interests; through this approach, they fall in love with the satisfaction of working hard and learning deeply. Students regularly go farther in their learning than might be typical at their grade level. With this experience in the Elementary, MMS students activate their internal mindset of curiosity and enthusiasm for lifelong learning. By the end, students have so much of what they need to navigate the rest of their lives in this ever-changing world. Our Lower and Upper Elementary Programs offer: Environments that mirror life. Fuel for the growing mind. Opportunities that celebrate the Elementary child’s hunger for fairness. Interconnected learning that helps students see the parts and the whole. An approach that inspires metacognition . An environment that honors the social nature of the elementary child. < > The Making of the Mathematical Mind Our Elementary program integrates and expands upon conventional academic subjects, offering a comprehensive and enriching educational experience that nurtures academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and social-emotional development. Through thoughtfully designed learning experiences, we ensure rigorous academic instruction in core subjects, fostering a love for learning and empowering students to become confident, responsible, and compassionate individuals Our emphasis on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Executive Function development are integrated throughout. Emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and collaborative skills enable children to navigate interpersonal relationships with grace and authenticity. From Mathematics and Language to Humanities, Sciences, Arts, and Physical Education, our students acquire a strong foundation in various disciplines, while "Big Work" integration projects encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and independent thinking. Beyond the classroom, we provide real-world learning experiences, allowing children to develop independence, explore the community, and engage with diverse perspectives. Parents can trust that their children are receiving a well-rounded and supportive education, preparing them for future academic challenges and personal fulfillment. The Gather for Good 2026 An Unshakable Foundation This year’s theme, The Gather for Good: An Unshakable Foundation, will be a community-wide celebration to mark the third year of our endowment campaign, which raises funds to directly support long-term stability for our teachers, families, and programs. This year’s Gather will authentically showcase the true spirit of our students and programs, illuminating the depth of their learning, their leadership, and the vibrancy of our Montessori education. Learn More Why We Gather The Marin Montessori School Endowment Founders’ Pledge and Sponsorship Opportunities Volunteer Roles Frequently Asked Questions NonProfit Partner The Musical Guests Why We Gather Since its inception in 2019, The Gather for Good has been more than a fundraiser; it is a platform where we delve into the challenges our children will face in the future, educate ourselves on how we can have the greatest impact, and actively contribute to initiatives that foster a healthier and more sustainable world. Over the past six years, this event has transformed our ability to serve the community and bring our core mission to life. The impact has been profound–from helping underwrite our Tuition Assistance program to launching the innovative Play, Learn, Create initiative that reimagined our campus spaces. The Gather continues to catalyze positive change, creating lasting ripples throughout our community. In 2026, we are embarking on the final year of our three-year campaign to secure, enhance, strengthen, and empower MMS to ensure our community and mission thrive in perpetuity: The Marin Montessori School Endowment for an Unshakeable Foundation. The Marin Montessori School Endowment Building Our Legacy In 2023, our 60th-anniversary celebration marked a transformative moment in our school's history. Our community united to launch our first-ever endowment fund to ensure that Marin Montessori School will thrive for generations to come. In honor of the visionary families who established MMS as a one-room schoolhouse six decades ago, 139 Founding Families stepped forward to champion authentic Montessori education for the future. Today, we have the opportunity to grow this vital resource into an unshakeable foundation that transcends annual tuition and fundraising. Our permanent endowment will fuel innovation, expand access to more families, and attract and retain exceptional educators, ensuring the best possible education not just now but through all the changes ahead. We have answers. In This Section Welcome from the Director Open Houses Application Process for 2026-27 Tuition and Tuition Assistance FAQs Contact Us Are all Montessori schools alike? What is AMI? How many openings do you have? Do you have openings in Kindergarten? Is there a wait pool at Marin Montessori School? Do you have a financial aid program? How is class placement determined? Is diversity a component of admission decisions? Are all Montessori schools alike? No. Any school can call itself a Montessori school but Marin Montessori School’s accreditation from the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) ensures that MMS adheres to the highest standards of Montessori principles and methodology. We are one of just two AMI schools in Marin County. What is AMI? Dr. Maria Montessori founded Association Montessori Internationale ( AMI ) in 1929 to protect the integrity of her work. AMI has remained the worldwide authority on Montessori education and practice. AMI accreditation indicates that our school performs according to the highest standards of the Montessori philosophy, receives regular consultations from trained and qualified AMI consultants and is staffed by qualified AMI teachers and administrators. How many openings do you have? We seek to enroll approximately 12 children at the Toddler level (18 months – 30 months) and 40 children at the Primary level (2 ½ - 6 years old) each year. Most children enter our program around the age of three and continue on through Junior High school. Our Elementary and Junior High level classrooms are largely filled by students who have completed our Primary program. Openings vary from year to year. Do you have openings in Kindergarten? In our school, each classroom is set up as a multi-age community. A student usually spends three years in a classroom before moving on to the next level. For example, a child will enter a Primary classroom when he/she is 3 years old and remain in that classroom until he/she moves up to Lower Elementary (1st to 3rd grade). A child’s “kindergarten” year is the last year in his/her Primary classroom. Any spaces at the “kindergarten” year are based on attrition, as most students enter the Primary level at the age of three and continue through the Junior High level. Is there a wait pool at Marin Montessori School? We have a wait pool when we receive more applications than available spots. Often our programs do have a wait pool after the priority admissions period. It is called a wait pool because students in the pool are not ranked. When a space becomes available, the Admissions Committee considers many factors and fills the space accordingly. Do you have a financial aid program? Our Sustainable Tuition Program enables families who might find our standard tuition fees a challenge to pay an amount that is thoughtfully calibrated to their financial standing. This ensures that the power of the MMS education is accessible to all. Here's how it works: Thorough Assessment: Families submit financial details via our financial assessment tool, Clarity , which evaluates various factors to determine an “Expected Family Contribution.” The consideration is not solely numerical but also appreciates the unique circumstances of each family. Consistent Support: Upon being awarded Tuition Assistance, MMS pledges to continue tailoring the tuition in alignment with your family’s yearly "Expected Family Contribution," subject to annual reapplication. Tuition Assistance is available for families in Primary, Elementary, and Junior High . We consider the needs of each individual child and the needs of the existing classroom community. Once your child is placed, he/she will remain in the same classroom within his/her level. Is diversity a component of admission decisions? We strive to give every child a diverse and realistic view of the world. We are committed to offering the broadest possible experience to our students and families by maintaining a diverse community that reflects the variety of experience, culture, development and physical abilities, economic diversity, lifestyles and philosophies in the Bay Area. Raising children in today’s world can feel daunting one moment and exhilarating the next. Parents need trusted partners as much as children need exceptional schools, and I can tell you both as a parent and a school administrator that Marin Montessori offers both in profound ways. I’ve spent time in many schools, and while all have their attributes, none matches what I’ve witnessed and experienced here. At Marin Montessori, we celebrate the uniqueness of each child, offering an educational experience that empowers them to lead, develop their passions, and dive deep into subjects that ignite their curiosity. More than that, though, our Montessori pedagogy matches both what children naturally crave and what they need to thrive in a fundamentally changed world that rewards those who can concentrate in a sea of distraction, that requires independent thinking more than conformity, and that needs citizens rather than consumers. Our approach celebrates the diversity of our students' passions and learning styles, providing them with the freedom to go above and beyond because we understand that education isn't one size fits all. Our school is built on the foundation of meaningful and relevant learning attained through "uninterrupted work periods.” These periods of deep study allow students the freedom to attain concentration and passion without the constraints of traditional hourly blocks. This promotes a state of productive flow where the joy of learning becomes a lasting part of your child's life - in the classroom and beyond. At Marin Montessori, your child will learn how to challenge themselves, collaborate with peers, and develop their passions. Our multi-age classrooms, carefully crafted environments, and opportunities for personal agency create confident, self-reliant students who are able to navigate the challenges of an ever-changing world. We also want families to continue at MMS so their children can experience the benefits of the full-cycle structure of our school. Our commitment to forging and sustaining a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive community is reflected in our Sustainable Tuition Program. What is Sustainable Tuition? How Does It Work? How to Apply for Tuition Assistance Our Guiding Principles Toddler Level (18 months – 30 Months) Primary Level (2.8 – 6 Years) Elementary Level (1st-6th Grade) Junior High Level (7th-9th Grade) Additional Fees What is Sustainable Tuition? The Sustainable Tuition program is not merely a financial aid program but a testament to our dedication to making MMS accessible to a wide array of families. By aligning tuition costs with each family’s financial capacity , we not only facilitate but also celebrate the rich tapestry of varied life experiences and perspectives brought into our community. The Tuition Assistance that our Sustainable Tuition Program provides is an invaluable tool for making the MMS experience more accessible, welcoming, and inclusive. Sustainable Tuition enables approximately 30 percent of our students to attend and continue at MMS. How Does It Work? For current MMS families, applications are due on December 1, 2025. For families new to MMS, the Tuition Assistance application is due on February 1, 2026. Tuition Assistance Awards are sent with Re-Enrollment Agreements for returning families or with the Acceptance Letter for new families. They are included in the Enrollment contract. If you need any additional guidance or documentation, please reach out to
[email protected] . Our Director of Admissions will offer additional resources to support your application. How to Apply for Tuition Assistance To get started, please go to the Clarity Application and create an account. The application typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. The Clarity Application is also mobile-friendly, so you can complete it from anywhere. You are also able to save your progress and return at any time. At the end of the application, there is a $60 fee to submit, and you can share your application with additional schools that accept the Clarity Application for no additional charge. Simply use the dropdown menu in the application to select those schools. Please remember to return to your dashboard after you complete and submit your Clarity Application. The deadlines for completing the financial aid application, including relevant supplemental documents, are: December 1, 2025 - returning families February 1, 2026 - prospective families If you need support during the process of completing your application, there is in-app support available through the “Help” button in the bottom left of the screen, as well as email and phone support at
[email protected] or 206-210-3752, in both English and Spanish. The application itself is also fully translated into Spanish. At MMS, your child learns with expertly trained faculty credentialed by Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and alongside supportive peers. Primary students work and grow in carefully prepared environments with beautiful Montessori materials precisely designed to meet the developmental characteristics of this age and stage of development. While students discover their unique potentials and interests, faculty support their developmental needs at each step of their growth. Our expert faculty employ a deliberate approach to liberate each child’s inherent sense of wonder and purpose based on these crucial principles: Age-appropriate opportunities for independence honor curiosity and build confidence. Choice sustains motivation. Individualized paths of learning celebrate the fact that each child is unique, capable, and motivated from within. Pace and environment should promote focus. We serve children aged 18 months to 15 years. We encourage every child to discover his individual potential so that he can contribute to and thrive in a better world. Montessori programs occur in three-year increments. These mixed-aged classrooms are rich with developmentally appropriate materials, teaching methods, and individualized instruction. Intellectually rigorous, yet reassuringly nurturing, our programs are carefully designed to help each child successfully make the journey from a wonder-filled childhood to a self-assured, optimistic adulthood Our Approach Toddler Primary Elementary Middle School | Junior High Our Additional Programs You may notice we like birds. Each class on the Corte Madera campus bears the name (and sometimes the personality) of the birds students often see around our stunning home. It may take a while to learn all of the names, but eventually, you will likely feel great referring to your child and yourself as a Burrowing Owl. Toddler (18 months to 2 years and 6 months): Sandpiper Primary (2 years and six months to 6 years old): Song Sparrow, Great Blue Heron, Mourning Dove, Quail, and Pelican Lower Elementary (1st through 3rd grade): Chickadee and Burrowing Owl Upper Elementary (4th through 6th grade): Belted Kingfisher and Great White Egret Our mixed-aged classrooms are extraordinarily rich in developmental opportunities. This structure offers many benefits: Children can progress at their own pace without grade level limitations. Younger children learn from older children and aspire to do what they are doing. In turn, older children hone their leadership skills, develop empathy, and further their mastery of subject matter by acting as guides to younger children. As children stay together for three years in our mixed-aged classrooms, they develop strong social bonds and work together closely to create vibrant class communities. Our rigorous and joyful program is based on scientifically-grounded best practices in teaching and learning. And, in an innovative and ever-changing world where most careers haven’t even been invented yet, our students have the time and space to dig deep, solve real world problems, and learn by doing. At the culmination of the Marin Montessori journey, our graduates are confident, capable, grounded people who have learned how to be innovators, leaders, and uniquely self-aware individuals prepared for a lifetime of success. Our Faculty and Staff Our Graduates Our Mission Our Values Our Homes Our History Our Board of Trustees Awards and Accreditations Our Mission In This Section Head of School Welcome: Why MMS? Our Faculty and Staff Our Graduates Our Mission Our Values Our Homes Our History Our Board of Trustees Awards and Accreditations Our mission is our map. At the front and center in all we do are our priorities: to nurture each student's independence and to inspire intellectual and personal growth. Our mission ensures that when our students graduate they remain passionately curious and whole. If great potential exists in every child, how will it be unleashed and honored? Mission Vision Mission Our mission is summarized in three words: "Education for Life" The mission of Marin Montessori School, in adherence to the principles of the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) as envisioned by Dr. Maria Montessori, is to nurture the development of each child in our diverse community to his or her fullest potential – an independent, responsible, compassionate, learned individual who thinks critically and realizes clearly his or her role in the world. Thus, our mission is to provide education for life. Vision Marin Montessori School is a private, non-profit, AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) accredited school serving the diverse needs of children from toddler age through adolescence. The school is a community of families, faculty, staff, administration, and a volunteer board of trustees. Collectively, we nurture the development of each child to their fullest potential – intellectually, physically, socially, creatively, emotionally, and spiritually. Therefore, we strive to provide more than an academic education alone; our goal is to provide education for life. We accomplish this by preparing a stimulating classroom with beautiful tactile materials where our children, with the guidance of our specially trained faculty, follow their natural tendencies to master skills. We are dedicated to maintaining a warm, nurturing, joyful environment where each child: Receives a quality education that supports their individual development; Has the freedom to choose, balanced by the responsibility to be productive; Learns according to his/her personal learning styles and timelines; Can reach his/her academic potential without grade level limits; and Enjoys beautiful, orderly, harmonious surroundings. This program fosters self-motivation, self-discipline, compassion, independence, critical thinking, social and personal responsibility, and respect for others and the environment. It is our vision that our children and adolescents gain a strong sense of self and realize a life-long satisfaction and joy in learning, working, and exploring life. We believe this will enable our children to contribute happily and productively their unique talents to the world. These tax-deductible gifts play a vital role in sustaining every aspect of our school; ensuring inspiring learning environments, upholding the highest standard of AMI Montessori education, and supporting our tuition assistance program. Like most independent schools, MMS relies on fundraising to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the full cost of delivering an exceptional education. Rather than raising tuition to close this gap, we intentionally plan for it, allowing us to keep tuition more accessible and welcome a wider range of students and families. Every Annual Fund gift directly supports our operations. Donors may choose to direct their gift to the area that most resonates, or allow the school to allocate it where it's needed most: Extend Access & Affordability Enrich Academic Programs Beautify & Expand Campuses & Classrooms Retain & Elevate World Class Faculty We invite each member of our community to give as generously as they are able. Contact: Carolyn Woolf , Assistant Head of School MMS Endowment The Time to Prepare for the Future is Now Marin Montessori School has a strong history of planning for the future. Starting with the bold vision of a small group of Marin families seeking to provide the best possible education for their students, our one-room schoolhouse in San Rafael has transformed into one of only two fully accredited AMI (Association Montessori International) and CAIS (California Association of Independent Schools) independent schools in California. On the 60th Anniversary of our founding, we took bold action to secure Marin Montessori School for generations to come. To safeguard the financial flexibility that goes beyond annual tuition and fundraising goals, we established a permanent endowment to support innovation, access, and excellence for all our constituents. Ensuring MMS Endures for the Next 60 Years Why Create a Permanent Endowment? Founders Pledge Ensuring MMS Endures for the Next 60 Years Our vision for the next 60 years depends on our ability to navigate the threats and opportunities of the changing world around us. As a community of engaged parents, educators, alumni, and trustees, we came together to review our past and analyze our future with this guiding question: “How does Marin Montessori School leverage its greatest assets today to ensure our community and mission thrive in perpetuity?” This question challenged us to look ahead and face the real threats to our mission and sustainability: The rising cost of living and operating in the Bay Area The challenge of attracting and retaining world-class AMI-trained faculty Necessary tuition increases that threaten the sustainability and accessibility of our program The growing need for additional tuition assistance and scholarships to ensure the socioeconomic diversity of our community Our conclusion: More than tuition increases and annual fundraising will be required to meet the needs of our community in the following decades. Our Commitment: Sustainability and longevity must be prioritized for the long-term health of our school and mission through an endowment designed to fund mission-critical objectives that enhance sustainability, increase access for students, reduce the cost of living, and support professional development for our faculty and staff. To ensure our life-changing AMI Montessori program remains accessible to a diverse community and protect and grow our greatest resource, an outstanding AMI faculty, we commit to the following initiatives: Competitive Compensation to attract and retain top AMI talent AMI Training Sponsorship to build a bench of trained, highly qualified AMI candidates Expanded Programming to support the needs of our students and working families for continuity of care and additional program enrichment Indexed-Tuition & Tuition Assistance to welcome families from all socioeconomic backgrounds Why Create a Permanent Endowment? When most people think of endowments, large universities with established planned giving departments come to mind. This may be true, but endowments are not reserved solely for universities. A permanent endowment ensures long-term stability, provides an added layer of support in the event our school experiences an unusual financial challenge, and funds specific programs and initiatives. A recent example of an unexpected challenge that threatened the financial sustainability of many independent schools was the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools with endowments were better able to circumvent the effects of the pandemic versus those that did not. According to our audit report from Armanino , our peer Marin independent schools have endowments of $20,000 to $200,000 per student. Because of the practice of calculating annual spending rates based on a rolling average, this translates into a steady income stream for these schools; this is income that remains stable even during downturns. When a financial crisis hits, without an endowment, Marin Montessori would likely have to cut staff, reduce tuition assistance, and impose tuition hikes; all this endangers our long-term sustainability and mission. Stable endowment spending provides institutions with the ability to plan for long-term initiatives and the flexibility to manage financial challenges, including drops in enrollment, tuition pressures, and increasing operational costs. Founders Pledge Founders Pledge | Fall 2023-Spring 2026 Inspired by the 11 founding families that first established Marin Montessori School in 1963, we look to take a similar leap of faith in the future and sustainability of our school and community by creating the “Founders Pledge.” During our three-year campaign, the Endowment Advisory Board and School leadership will solicit gifts to reach our goal of $6 million. Founding Families We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Founding Families of the Marin Montessori School Endowment. Their extraordinary generosity will leave an enduring legacy. Our Primary program inspires each student to move along a carefully calibrated sequence of exploration and discovery. In the first few years, your child’s foundational capacities are nurtured: cognitive and social-emotional development, curiosity and creativity, gross and fine motor skills, focus and concentration. Emotional and social understanding can flourish at this developmental moment. < > Our Primary program offers a nurturing and enriching educational experience that lays a strong foundation for children's academic and personal growth.
