The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising effort at MCDS each year. Tuition alone does not cover the actual cost of providing an MCDS education; the school relies on voluntary, tax-deductible contributions to make up the 7% annual operating budget gap. The Annual Fund is a philanthropic opportunity to make an impact today that directly supports the people and programs that make MCDS a unique and unparalleled educational experience. Consistent with the independent school financial model, the Annual Fund is a collective gift from the community to fill an intentional gap in the annual operating budget. Tuition is intentionally set below the full cost of education. We do this to provide for greater affordability, engaging a wider-ranging student community, as well as allowing families to pay for a portion of educational expenses through a tax-deductible donation. For these reasons, the Annual Fund is the most important yearly fundraising effort at MCDS. We aim for 100% participation from the board of trustees, current families, and faculty and staff. Gifts of all sizes matter and are appreciated, they make a difference to our students and the community. Annual Fund pledges are payable by May 15. Current families are asked to make a specific pledge or gift before December 31st. See if your employer will match your donation! Our school's mission is to create an inclusive community of learning that inspires curiosity, empathy and action. In 1956, a group of inspired parents and educators from Marin County and San Francisco came together to establish Marin Country Day School. They believed that learning is a joyful and lifelong process and that each child's unique gifts should be nurtured. They emphasized the equal importance of developing the mind, body, and spirit. The founders envisioned a learning environment immersed in nature, fostering both study and laughter, noise and quiet, thought and action, where children would fall in love with going to school. MCDS provides an exceptional education based on distinct values, aspirations, and practices. Students at MCDS benefit from innovative teaching, a deeper understanding of how children learn, tools for clear and creative expression, and a vibrant and inclusive learning community. Our comprehensive core curriculum includes a strong foundation in academic disciplines such as English, Mandarin, Spanish, mathematics, science, and social studies. Art, athletics, drama, music, and outdoor education are integral parts of the program. Additionally, the school incorporates developmental physical education, and age-appropriate curricula covering nutrition, human sexuality, and substance abuse to promote health and wellness. We also aim to prepare our students to thoughtfully and meaningfully participate in a changing world, equipping them with flexible skill sets suitable in a more competitive and technologically integrated world. The program integrates initiatives promoting ecoliteracy, global awareness and engagement, and proficiency in the use of technology. Continuous review of the core program ensures that the curriculum is dynamic, incorporates current pedagogy and best practices, and is well-aligned throughout the nine grade levels. Stretch Your Mind and Body Our learning requires us to be nimble and flexible in what we learn and the way we learn it. When we allow ourselves to grow and stretch, whether in the classroom or by the creek, there’s no limit to what we can accomplish. Cherish the Natural World From the beginning, the natural world has been woven into the MCDS experience. Leveraging the outdoors as part of our classroom, we hold ourselves accountable to educate, inspire, and empower every member of our community to protect the earth. Value Every Voice As an inclusive community of learning, we welcome others’ experiences, ideas, and viewpoints. We want all members of the MCDS community to be— and feel—seen, heard, and valued. To that end, we seek every day to create and nurture a sense of belonging among students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Practice Compassion As with any muscle, compassion must be practiced daily, so that it becomes comfortable and commonplace. With an open heart, we approach each situation as an opportunity to embrace and understand our shared humanity. Cultivate a Playful Spirit We believe in fostering joy through play, learning, and community connection to nurture the child in all of us. The Bay Area is one of the most diverse places in the country and we are committed to reflecting the vibrant mix of cultural, economic, racial, ethnic, sexual orientations, and family structures that are part of our everyday lives. We believe an inclusive school community makes us better informed, more compassionate, and better prepared to effect positive change in the world. Our families, faculty and staff represent an increasingly broad spectrum of economic backgrounds, family compositions, racial, ethnic, and gender identities. We believe this diversity of experience equips our students with the perspectives and skills necessary to thrive in a complex, multicultural, and increasingly connected world. Inclusion and Belonging is one of the major strategic initiatives set forth by the Board of Trustees . Setting this initiative has led us to set thoughtful goals and make progress among our students, faculty, staff, and parents in this work. Affinity Groups @ MCDS MCDS fully supports affinity groups as a way of fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging. Affinity groups are intentionally designed to create a safe space for students, faculty/staff, or parents to discuss topics of interest, support one another, and explore one’s affinity experience. Most affinity groups meet several times during the school year. Parent/Guardian affinity groups are parent-led and organized, with support provided by the MCDS Family Association. Current affinity groups include: Adoptive Family; Asian/Pacific Islander; Being Understood (Neurodiversity); Black/African American; Familias Unidas; LGBTQIA+; Jewish Families; Solo Parent/Caregiver. Student affinity groups in Upper School are optional and student input is used to form the desired affinity spaces. Student affinity groups are supported by a faculty or staff member who shares the group's affinity. Faculty & Staff affinity groups are peer-led and provide space for members to connect and explore their affinity experience. Affiliations & Community Partnerships MCDS maintains partnerships and affiliations with the following organizations: Breakthrough San Francisco Bridge the Gap (Marin City) Next Generation Scholars (Marin) Our Family Coalition (Bay Area) People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS) Schools Mentoring & Resource Team (SMART San Francisco) Statement of Community and Inclusion Statement of Community and Inclusion Our Community We are an intentionally diverse Community of adults and children who share the core values of respect, responsibility and compassion. To successfully realize our mission and values, each of us must actively help build and cultivate our multifaceted community by developing cultural competency: the will and ability to create, nurture and sustain authentic relationships across differences.* We define diversity as including, but not limited to, the human facets that collectively and historically correlate with differences in social experiences and, in turn, give rise to diverse perspectives: race, ethnicity, national origin, geography, religion, gender, affectional or sexual orientation, learning style, age, physical ability, family structure and economic status.** In living our mission and values, all community members must be willing to take intellectual and emotional risks; learn from mistakes; improve upon successes; show persistence, integrity, flexibility and courage in solving problems and, through it all, maintain a sense of wonder and of fun. Each of us has much to offer and much to learn. Ours is a Community that would be uncomfortable without diversity. We expect all our members to honor and value multiple ideas and experiences, seek missing voices and embrace one another’s story. We understand the interrelatedness of our local, national and global communities. We work cooperatively, value human dignity and advocate for social justice. We appreciate that our work in all of this is iterative, ongoing and never done. Our Vision Our Community members inspire, nurture and challenge one another. Grounded by these core values through their MCDS education, our students gain the knowledge, skills and character necessary to step up and lead effective and fulfilling lives as engaged global citizens in a complex multicultural and interdependent world. *Adapted in part from national diversity educator Gary Howard and The Blake School (MN). **Adapted in part from the work of Alison Park at Blink Consulting Inquire Visit Us 5221 Paradise Drive Corte Madera , CA 94925 415.927.5900 Code of Conduct Privacy Policy The Kite Magazine Site Map Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram Vimeo (opens in new window/tab) Notice Of Nondiscriminatory Policy As To Students:Marin Country Day School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. The purpose of indexed tuition (IT) is to help fulfill the MCDS mission by increasing economic diversity in the school community. Representation of families all across the full range of the economic spectrum broadens perspectives; reinforces core values of curiosity, empathy and action ; and expands students’ vision of and for the world. Economic diversity enriches our community, fosters inclusion, and enhances the educational and social-emotional experience for both children and adults. Tuition Ranges Grades K-5: $1,000 - $46,915 Grades 6-8: $1,000 - $49,535 * For the 2025-26 academic year Tuition includes: The cost of instruction, books and educational materials, lunch, outdoor education, field trips, laboratory fees, yearbooks, and athletic uniforms. Tuition does not include: The cost of optional items such as transportation, special tutoring, and extended care or after-school programs. Tuition below the top of the index: includes bus transportation at no extra cost. extends to programs such as tutoring and after-school care; additional fees are indexed at the same rate as tuition. Tuition fees for the 2026-27 school year are determined in February 2026. 19% of MCDS families pay below the top of the index. Indexed tuition (IT) at MCDS was launched in 2001 as a way to increase socio-economic diversity at MCDS. Every student's tuition is indexed to some degree; the highest tuition rate does not completely cover the full cost of educating a student at MCDS. Families must apply for IT each year and tuition can move up or down in line with a families economic profile. Tuition determinations are made by a family's entire financial profile, not solely income, and are assessed by the MCDS IT Committee and Clarity. Indexed tuition dollars are derived primarily from the school's operating budget and unrestricted endowment income. Indexed Tuition Applications Due January 15, 2026 MCDS uses Clarity to manage applications for indexed tuition. These trips are a natural extension of the learning that goes on in the classroom, with science and social studies often providing the basis for each trip. The trips also help to foster a sense of community and togetherness among students. 4th Grade Trip: California Gold Country Bringing the Gold Rush to Life The fourth grade culminates their intensive study of the California Gold Rush by taking a trip to the historic town of Coloma. Students participate in authentic Gold Rush activities and enjoy the outdoor opportunities in the area. The trip and hands-on activities bring to life the many different aspects of California history that students learned about in the classroom in a rich, interactive way. 5th Grade Trip: Santa Cruz Mountains Fostering Teamwork and Leadership Skills The fifth grade spends a day and night at the Happy Valley Conference Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Professional facilitators from Naturalists at Large engage our students in appropriate challenges that develop teamwork and individual skills, including hiking and ropes course activities. In addition, students kayak on Elkhorn Slough. The goal of the fifth grade overnight is to foster teamwork and leadership skills that students will employ throughout the school year. 6th Grade Trip: Yosemite National Park Studying the Natural Wonders of Yosemite Sixth graders take a four-day trip in late fall to Yosemite National Park. The students stay in Curry Village and hike daily, taking in the wonders of Yosemite. Led by guides from the NatureBridge, the sixth graders study the watersheds, geology, ecology, plants and animals of Yosemite valley. 7th Grade Trip: Joshua Tree Rock Climbing and Hiking Through Joshua Tree Each spring, the entire seventh grade class spends a week at Joshua Tree National Monument hiking, rocking climbing, and learning about nature and the desert ecosystem. While at Joshua Tree, students share leadership responsibilities and chores. The trip also tests and expands the character of students who are asked to step outside familiar, comfortable and traditional roles to explore more of themselves, others, and the natural world. Students often cite the Joshua Tree trip as one of the most memorable experiences of their time at MCDS. 8th Grade Trip: Ansel Adams Wilderness Backpacking Through Ansel Adams Wilderness In early fall, eighth graders take a four-day trip to Ansel Adams Wilderness. Students backpack through the region and learn how to filter water from one of the spectacular lakes in the region. Fishing is a highlight of this trip. Additionally, towards the end of their 8th grade year, students have the option of participating in one of several intensive projects in an area that reflects their interest. The projects vary from year to year and can range from marine science to sewing and textiles to local day trips to overnight backpacking trips. Many of the projects involve field trips to destinations in the greater Bay Area, including Point Reyes National Seashore, Bolinas and Monterey. From kindergarten through eighth grade, our core program balances rigorous academics with the arts, athletics, outdoor education, social-emotional learning, and community engagement. Our curriculum emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning that fosters problem-solving and critical thinking skills, the ability of students to apply their learning in new ways, and collaboration. Bordered by Ring Mountain and the bay, the natural beauty of our campus is more than just a backdrop. Nature serves as a second classroom for students , enhancing their on-campus learning in a variety of subjects including art, science, and social studies. Starting in fourth grade, our extended outdoor education program allows students to deepen their learning and connection to nature in settings such as Yosemite, historic Gold Country, and Joshua Tree. Through a supportive school environment and meaningful connections with teachers and peers, MCDS students develop a foundation of belonging and confidence to stretch the boundaries of their learning and growth. We encourage our students to think independently and critically, to make connections among ideas, to take risks, to overcome adversity, and to develop a lifelong love of learning. Students graduate from MCDS with academic mastery, resilience, an understanding of different perspectives, and the curiosity, empathy and passion to contribute meaningfully to their communities. We believe MCDS’s co-educational environment provides an excellent foundation for academic growth and social-emotional development. At MCDS, students learn and work together in an academic and social setting where they benefit from being with peers of different genders, and where they can interact and collaborate in ways that will better prepare them for high school, college, and beyond. Additional benefits include: Vibrant Academic Learning Environment Learning alongside peers of different genders enriches the educational experience, and fosters a sense of community and belonging for all students. This vibrant and inclusive environment helps students to develop an understanding of different perspectives. A co-educational setting also allows students a chance to break down the stereotypes that favor one gender over another in certain academic areas. Vital Social and Emotional Development Research has noted that co-educational schools provide opportunities for positive interactions across all genders, supporting the development of empathy, emotional intelligence, and healthy relationships. Learning to work and collaborate effectively with others helps students develop strong communication skills and build meaningful friendships. Students Are Better Prepared for the Real World A report by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) emphasized that co-educational environments better prepare students for the diverse and integrated workplaces and communities they will encounter in college and adulthood. At MCDS, students develop essential social and leadership skills, learn to solve conflicts, and to work well in groups. The school community is actively engaged in experiences both on and off campus that foster growth and deepen understanding of all kinds – academic, social and emotional. This is at the heart of the school’s Community Engagement program, one of the primary tools used to integrate the school’s mission and core values into the life of MCDS. Students engage in activities that help them to see their place and role in the greater community through both community service projects that address short-term needs and a robust curriculum with deeper and more thoughtful preparation and reflection. Students learn how a healthy community benefits them and how this mutual connection is integral to the development of equity and social justice. All MCDS students engage in the immediate school community through classroom jobs, helping with lunch cleanup (Lunch Bunch), collecting compost, working in the school gardens or supporting parents and staff at special events. Throughout students' K-8 experience, the academic curriculum is deepened by community engagement opportunities in collaboration with over 50 different community partners who focus on education, the elderly and people with special needs, environmental sustainability, food justice, healthcare, homelessness and poverty. By the eighth grade, students are fully engaged in Community Internships, with six full days spent off campus working with community partners and practicing Design Thinking strategies to gain empathy, identify a need or an opportunity, prototype solutions and share their ideas with agency staff. Our Community Partners Include: Bahia Vista Elementary School Cedars of Marin The Cove School Homeward Bound of Marin Institute on Aging Muttville Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary SF Free Clinic SF/Marin Food Bank We believe that well-informed, responsible and self-aware global citizens are those who most effectively envision and work towards a better world. To accomplish this, we ask students to practice and reflect on the following cultural competency skills, habits of mind and core attitudes: cooperation flexibility mindfulness perseverance and resiliency integrity empowerment humility empathy patience Adults in our community model these skills, habits of mind and our core values through our active parent volunteer program, regular family outreach experiences in the greater community and opportunities for faculty and staff to engage in the broader community both alongside students and individually. This core belief is woven through every facet of our school—from the classrooms and the curriculum to the many events, activities, and gatherings that help build a deep sense of community. Every student is understood, appreciated and individually guided by teachers. Through collaborative learning, outdoor education and many other programs, students are constantly forming new connections with one another. We encourage our community to share feedback so that we may continually learn about its needs and strengthen our programs. We believe that each of us at MCDS is engaged in a partnership to ensure that every member of our community —students, families, faculty, and staff—experiences authentic belonging and support. Statement of Community and Inclusion MCDS Community Norms Statement of Community and Inclusion Our Community We are an intentionally diverse Community of adults and children who share the core values of respect, responsibility and compassion. **Adapted in part from the work of Alison Park at Blink Consulting MCDS Community Norms Inquire Visit Us 5221 Paradise Drive Corte Madera , CA 94925 415.927.5900 Code of Conduct Privacy Policy The Kite Magazine Site Map Facebook (opens in new window/tab) Instagram Vimeo (opens in new window/tab) Notice Of Nondiscriminatory Policy As To Students:Marin Country Day School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the School. We provide a Lower School curriculum that allows children to learn important skills by exploring complex and engaging topics and issues, all while prioritizing their social-emotional growth. The Lower School consists of kindergarten through fourth grades. There are three homerooms at each grade level. Each homeroom has 18-20 students and one full-time head teacher and one full-time associate teacher. In Lower School, students develop foundational math and literacy skills, building towards independence in these areas. Integrated social studies units at each grade level provide opportunities for students to apply academic skills to learn about topics in depth. Students have specialist classes in science, art, music, physical education, world languages (in grades 3 and 4) and library, while our social and emotional curriculum helps students understand themselves as learners and sets the stage for collaboration, empathy, and self-advocacy. Students of all aptitudes, abilities and ambitions have ample opportunity to learn, evolve, achieve and succeed in a nurturing and supportive environment. Student-Athletes seeking an enriching, educational and competitive outlet may begin representing MCDS in interscholastic athletics beginning in the 5th grade. MCDS participates in the Bay Area Independent Athletic League (BAIAL), fielding teams of boys and girls at the 5th Grade, 6th Grade, Junior Varsity (predominantly 7th Grade), and Varsity (predominantly 8th Grade) levels. Sports offered include: volleyball, cross-country, soccer, basketball and track and field. Values emphasized on athletic teams are: commitment, persistence, resilience, and perspective. All teams recognize that one goal of an athletic event is to win, and players and coaches will employ specific strategies for success. In addition, teams are conscious that they are representing MCDS in the larger community, so their personal conduct assumes equal value with their competitive efforts. Our mission is to create an inclusive community of learning that inspires curiosity , empathy , and action . We invite you to experience this mission firsthand as you explore our 35-acre campus, nestled alongside Ring Mountain. Here, learning unfolds through the everyday moments and experiences shared by our students, faculty, and families. At MCDS, we offer a robust academic program centered around place-based, project-based, and experiential education. Our curriculum is intentionally scaffolded around skills acquisition to ensure that all learners—from kindergarten through eighth grade—develop the intellectual, social, and emotional foundations to thrive. Our learning environment is alight with wonder, alive with inquiry and discovery, as students are encouraged not only to ask what and how, but to interrogate the “why” behind ideas, systems, and experiences. At the heart of all this work is an enduring devotion to the preservation of childhood—a deep belief that learning should be joyful, developmentally attuned, and respectful of the pace and rhythm of growing up. We hold this as both a privilege and a responsibility, ensuring that each child is known, valued, and allowed the time and space to wonder, grow, and flourish. MCDS is a warm, vibrant community where adults love to teach and students love to learn; where children are known, valued, and encouraged to explore their identities, interests, and ideas in a supportive and caring environment. While our website is a great resource, the best way to learn about MCDS is by connecting directly with us. We encourage you to reach out to our admission team with any questions you may have during the application process. We look forward to welcoming your family to our campus! Ensure the Future! Parents of Alumni Your gift to MCDS is an investment in the lives of our faculty, our programs and and future alums. Support teachers and students Student Support Class Endowments (e.g. Class of 1991 Class Endowment) Timothy W. Johnson Fund Hope Williams Fund Kwentyn Wiggins Fund Class Endowments (e.g. Class of 1991 Class Endowment) Your gift to a class endowment is a long-term investment in indexed tuition. Alumni gifts to class endowments support indexed tuition. These dollars are put into an endowment fund (similar to a savings account), which either generates revenue through investments or interest. The revenue is then applied to the operating budget, leaving the initial gift available to generate more. In 1991, parents of graduates launched the first Class Endowment in recognition of the excellent education their children had received at MCDS. Subsequently, each graduating class has established its own fund to support indexed tuition, and funds are being established retroactively for classes prior to 1991. As alumni and their parents make additional gifts, the Class Endowments are becoming an increasingly important factor in supporting access to school. Ensure the Future Timothy W. Johnson Fund Established in honor of Tim Johnson, Head of School for fifteen years, this fund supports indexed tuition. Tim was such an articulate spokesman for the belief that matriculation at MCDS creates many opportunities for all kinds of great kids to develop the skills, habits and motivation to encourage them to “envision and work toward a better world” as they mature. This fund create opportunities for many more children and their families to participate in the school community. Support Indexed Tuition Hope Williams Fund Established in memory of this revered Lower School teacher who came west to teach as MCDS moved to our Paradise Drive site in the school’s second year. Income is directed to indexed tuition. Support Indexed Tuition Kwentyn Wiggins Fund Established to honor the memory of Kwentyn Wiggins (Class of 2016), income from this fund supports indexed tuition for students from Marin City, which helps create the inclusive community that Kwentyn so valued. Support Indexed Tuition for students from Marin City Faculty Support Barbara and Ernest Mendenhall Fund Barry Mineah Fund Edward Sibley Fund Barbara and Ernest Mendenhall Fund Established to honor the school’s founders whose dream launched MCDS in 1956, income from this fund is directed to faculty compensation. Barry Mineah Fund Established to honor this legendary founding music teacher, income from Barry’s fund supports faculty compensation. Edward Sibley Fund Established to honor this esteemed math teacher and Upper School Head, this fund supports faculty and staff professional development. Program Support The Mindfulness Fund Tim Hall Fund The Mindfulness Fund Established to honor Janet Daijogo’s 36 years of exemplary teaching, income from the fund supports Energy Time/Mindfulness/Social Emotional Learning as core to our work with students. Tim Hall Fund Established to honor the memory of Tim Hall (Class of 1997), income from this fund supports the music program and development of young musicians. The Board of Trustees, through its Investment Subcommittee of the Finance Committee, exercises its fiduciary responsibility by selecting and evaluating the performance of investment advisors and by setting spending policy. The Marin Country Day School endowments are managed by the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees. Endowment income equivalent to no more than 5% of a rolling five-year average was directed to the operating budget. With nearly 30 years in education—as a leader, teacher, and lifelong learner—I’ve come to believe that the true heart of a school beats not just in the pursuit of intellectual wonder, but in the powerful sense of belonging it cultivates, the strength of character it inspires, and the unwavering devotion to its values and community that defines it. MCDS nurtures thoughtful, confident, self-aware students through an uncompromising, child-centered, and deeply engaging academic program that delivers both breadth and depth of content, skills, and knowledge. Our students are challenged and supported in equal measure, emerging exceptionally well-prepared for high school and beyond. Just as essential is our campus itself—an expansive outdoor classroom that is intentionally woven into the academic curriculum, allowing children the freedom to explore, connect with nature, and discover themselves in the process. None of this would be possible without the extraordinary faculty, whose skill, warmth, and passion for teaching spark intellectual curiosity and creativity in every classroom. MCDS is a place where an inclusive community of learning is not just an aspiration, but a lived experience—one that inspires curiosity, empathy, and action in our students and adults alike. We warmly invite you to learn more about MCDS, visit our campus, and meet our dedicated faculty and staff. Molly K. Our unique location allows us to use areas of our campus as outdoor classrooms and to offer students an environmental education that is integrated into the curriculum. We also aim to teach students to be good stewards of the environment. Outdoor education at MCDS is not only limited to our campus. Beginning in fourth grade and continuing through eighth grade, students take overnight trips to extend the learning that takes place on our campus. Campus Details 35 acres 40 Classrooms Science Building and Labs Learning Resource Center (Library, Technology, Student Support Services) Music and Art Rooms Performing Arts Auditorium Marine Science Dock Gymnasium and PE Pavilion Multi-Purpose Rooms Tutoring/Practice Rooms Athletic Fields Gardens and Greenhouse Sustainability & Stewardship In keeping with our mission, MCDS seeks create "an inclusive community of learning that inspires curiosity, empathy and action." We strive to create students who not only care deeply about the environment but are also highly motivated to take action. MCDS models sustainable practices through our composting and recycling programs, our efforts to reduce electricity and gas consumption, and by raising awareness among faculty, staff, and students about the need to conserve resources. Our "green" campus buildings/spaces are both a physical manifestation of and an ongoing inspiration for our commitment to creating ecologically literate students and transformative new curriculum around educating for sustainability. The "green" features include: Photovoltaics Daylighting Radiant heating and cooling Rainwater harvesting Natural ventilation Green roof Reused materials and sustainably harvested wood Stewardship We seek to instill and nurture in students a sense of stewardship for the environment, grounded in a foundation of science and ecology. We do this by weaving a sense of connection to the natural world through the curriculum across all Divisions and grade levels. In Lower School, students use the outdoor classroom of the Lower School Garden to learn about the planting, tending, and harvesting of food crops. Students also use the scientific inquiry process to learn about the positive impact recycling, reusing materials, and reducing consumption can have on the environment. In Upper School science, students study the planets and learn that Earth is the only body in our solar system that appears able to support life. Upper Schoolers study biology to learn more about caring for themselves and the environment. They study environmental issues such as water use, recycling and conservation. Our Upper School garden provides teachers and students with an outdoor extension of their science labs. Students serving on the "Green Team" gather items for our recycling collection programs such as TerraCycle. By encouraging students to think critically and apply solid scientific skills, we aim to nurture an appreciation of the interconnectedness of life on our planet and an understanding of the impact of personal decisions on the common good. We remain committed to enrolling an equal number of students from Marin and SF in our kindergarten class each year. In addition to the excellent academic program, here’s what our San Francisco families say they value about their MCDS experience: Campus Bus Community Co-Education Campus Ten minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, nestled between Ring Mountain Nature Preserve and the Bay. Our 35-acre campus features: easy access to nature expansive outdoor classroom spaces (including a dock, three gardens and a greenhouse) walking trails hillside cross country trails Testimonials: “ MCDS’s singular location and dedication to an indoor/outdoor campus, with “trees for hallways,” is unparalleled and greatly influenced our decision to attend as a San Francisco family!" “The extension of the classroom to the outside environment, field trips and the various classroom projects, have been a remarkable hands-on learning experience for our daughter." “As SF residents, MCDS was our top choice as a co-ed school offering academic excellence with a shared set of values, particularly a kind and compassionate environment that is close to nature and where kids can be kids.” Bus Community Bus Community MCDS buses serve areas throughout San Francisco. We maintain our own transportation department and the bus drivers are all MCDS employees. Our San Francisco families appreciate and value their bus stop communities. Other bus highlights: 100% ridership from San Francisco 4 San Francisco buses Kindergarten students are paired with an MCDS student Bus Buddy at the start of the school year Late bus leaves MCDS for San Francisco at 5:00pm (making it easy for students to participate in after school enrichment programs and athletics) Testimonials: “It is pretty magical that they take a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and through the "rainbow tunnel" (where the sun usually comes out) on a big yellow school bus every day." "Our bus driver just loves the kids, and the bus ride has become a great source of companionship with other SF friends. And with a bus stop just blocks from our house, there is no commute!” “Our bus stop community is wonderful and one of the daily reminders of what we love about MCDS, we found the parents of older children were great resources for any questions we had. Now, we play that role for new families." Co-Education Co-Education Skill building across all genders is a crucial part of inclusion and belonging at MCDS and in the real world. Learning to work and collaborate effectively with others helps students: cultivate friendships strengthen their communication skills break down stereotypes develop confidence and crucial leadership skills gain from multiple perspectives feel secure in their identities and free to be themselves Testimonials: "A coed education is very important to us since we want to prepare our sons for the coed world we live in. In preschool our older son adopted an “I don’t play with girls” attitude. We were a little worried that he’d carry that into kindergarten but we were relieved to hear how his good friends at MCDS have been a healthy mix of both boys and girls alike!" "Watching our daughter grow into such a well-rounded individual with a boost in self confidence nurtured by open mics in class and after-school programs, like theater, has been very rewarding.” "The MCDS mission to create an inclusive community of learning that inspires curiosity, empathy and action is at the foundation of everything MCDS does...what this looks like is an environment where each child feels safe, seen and excited to learn."
