Search Sewer Recycled Water Projects Biosolids Power Generation Utility and Electrical Reliability Program Co-Digestion Home Sewer Resource Recovery Biosolids Biosolids At the Monterey One Water Regional Treatment Plant, aquatic bacteria and gravity are used to remove solid particles from the water. These small particles contain both organic matter and mineral material such as silt and clay. Once separated from wastewater, these particles are treated and then tested. If they meet certain standards, they are called "biosolids" and can be put to beneficial reuse. Biosolids can serve as a valuable source of energy and as an agricultural soil amendment to benefit crop production. M1W’s biosolids are highly processed, regularly monitored, and tested to ensure that they meet or surpass the strict quality and safety standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the State of California, and local governments. Biosolids Handling Primary Clarifiers: During wastewater treatment, the flow of water is slowed to allow gravity to separate the waste within. Solids settle to the bottom (sludge) while fats, oils, and grease (FOG) float to the top. Both types are skimmed, removed, and sent to the Anaerobic Digesters. Anaerobic Digesters: Through heating and mixing, the majority of volatile solids are destroyed from the thickened sludge. This produces methane gas, carbon dioxide, and Class B digested sludge. Dewatering: The Class B digested sludge enters the dewatering process. Screw presses compact the sludge, squeezing out additional water. When the sludge leaves the digesters, it’s about 2.5-3% total solids. After dewatering, this increases to 17-20% total solids. Drying beds: Dewatered sludge is spread throughout drying beds to further remove water, where it remains for seven to fourteen days. Disposal: B iosolids are trucked to our neighbor ReGen Monterey, used to cover waste piles in the landfill, and some are transported out of the County for composting or land application. Capital Improvement Solids Handling and Resource Recovery Improvements Project Summary Changes in regulations and services have led the existing solids handling system to become undersized, inefficient, and labor/land intensive. Improvements will increase the facility’s dewatering capacity to handle an increase in biosolids from the co-digestion process, aim to achieve ≥50% total dried solids content in concentrate, and eliminate duplicative onsite loading and transport of solids for treatment. Updates to this system include: Replacement of dewatering and drying equipment to increase capacity and streamline process Installation of a nutrient recovery system to remove nutrients from liquid pressed out of the solids, convert to commercial-grade fertilizer Addition of nutrient recovery and removal system for phosphorus and ammonia Impacts Improve facility’s operational flexibility and reliability Recover/utilize all resources inherent in biosolids (energy, carbon, and nutrients) Reduce volume/weight of biosolids and long-distance hauling of cake for disposal Decrease potential odors from outdoor sludge drying beds Address increase of biosolids linked to biogas production program Prepare infrastructure efficiencies for the completion of liquid treatment process Master Plan and associated upgrades Status: Design; estimated completion of design June 2026 Biosolids after screw press Agendas & Minutes Work With Us Payment Options Auto Pay Sign Up Bids & RFPs Public Records Requests Pay Online Careers Agendas Contact Us --> Contact Us Administration: 5 Harris Court, Building D Monterey, CA 93940 Phone: ( 831) 372-3367 Regional Treatment & Recycling Facilities: 14811 Del Monte Boulevard Marina, CA 93933 Phone: (831) 422-1001 Site Links Home Site Map Contact Us Website Accessibility /QuickLinks.aspx Government Websites by CivicPlus® Loading Loading Do Not Show Again Close Arrow Left Arrow Right [] Slideshow Left Arrow Slideshow Right Arrow Sewer | Monterey One Water, CA Skip to Main Content Customers Sewer Recycled Water About How Do I... Cities and districts collect the wastewater leaving the homes and businesses. Once this flow enters the regional sewer system, it becomes the responsibility of Monterey One Water to convey the wastewater to its facility, treat the wastewater, and safely reintroduce it into the environment. Learn more about this joint responsibility and how you can help be a Clog Buster. Prevention The "first step" in wastewater treatment is source control. With increased awareness and everyone’s help, the amount of pollutants entering the sewer system can be reduced each year. Through careful, and sometimes regulated, monitoring of what is put in the sewer system, you can reduce the amount of toxic pollutants in the environment and also positively impact treatment costs. Treatment Monterey One Water is here to protect public health and the environment. Every time water is used indoors within our Service Area, from washing dishes to flushing the toilet, it’s pumped through an underground series of pipes to the Monterey One Water Regional Treatment Plant. At the Regional Treatment Plant, the used water, also known as wastewater, is cleaned through a multi-step process and safely reintroduced into the environment. Resource Recovery You might think wastewater is only filled with pollutants and contaminants, but there are also valuable elements we can turn into new resources. At Monterey One Water, we are committed to utilizing the most innovative and cost-effective technologies out there to provide valuable resources for our community. Capital Projects Monterey One Water was formed in 1972 in response to the Federal Clean Water Act. Careful operations and maintenance have leveraged the community's essential wastewater infrastructure, but this alone is no longer enough to guarantee reliable service. Strategic upgrades and replacement projects are needed to ensure the safe and uninterrupted treatment of your wastewater. Readiness Planning Monterey One Water’s sewer system consists of interceptors connecting each of the 10 Member Entities’ flows via a system of 12 M1W - owned pump stations and 34 miles of pipeline, both gravity and force main. The Sewer System Management Plan (SSMP) was initially adopted by M1W’s Board of Directors on April 28, 2014 and last re certified on April 29, 2019. The SSMP is a living document and is updated as necessary.
