CLASS SIZE Class sizes average 18-21 children. STUDENT TO TEACHER RATIO Peninsula School is proud of our 7:1 student to teacher ratio. In addition to a head teacher, all classes have one assistant who shares teaching responsibility. Having an excellent teacher to student ratio enhances the opportunity for authentic academic and social-emotional growth to occur. EXCEPTIONAL FINE ARTS & ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES Peninsula School provides K-8 students with remarkable opportunities in fine arts with ten specialist teachers. Our well-equipped studios include visual art, weaving, woodshop, music, rock band, and ceramics. We offer additional choices to students to enrich their free time each day including general arts, music, library, physical education, science, and drama. OUR GROUNDS — SUPPORTING PLAY & DISCOVERY Peninsula School is located on 6.6 acres of wooded land in Menlo Park, California. The school exists in a natural and rustic setting, which provides a sense of seclusion, safety, and timelessness. There is no place on campus too precious for hand or footprints, so students feel at ease and have a sense of ownership. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Founded in 1925, Peninsula School is recognized as one of the few early pioneers of progressive education still in operation. Our founders, Josephine and Frank Duveneck, incorporated the progressive education philosophy, practice and reforms of Francis Parker, John Dewey, and Maria Montessori, as well as contributing to the history of social justice land conservation movements in California. CAMPING — VALUING NATURE AND EACH OTHER Peninsula School’s collective camping trips add up to an average of 10 unique trips and approximately 45 overnights across all grades each year. These trips begin at a developmentally appropriate age for each child, often around seven or eight. Through camping, students build a deeper awareness of nature, self, and others, growing in self-confidence and the ability to collaborate and problem-solve. FIELD TRIPS — EXPLORING THE RICHNESS OF THE BAY AREA Our teachers take over 35 field trips each school year to support our students in gaining a broader understanding of the world beyond school. We tour over five local science museums including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, California Academy of Sciences, and the San Jose Discovery Museum. We participate in environmental and service learning at local parks, sustainable farms, and wildlife refuges. TUITION See the Tuition & Affordability page. 16% of tuition is allocated to make Peninsula School more affordable to a diverse range of families. In the 2022-2023 school year, approximately 25% of families enrolled at a reduced tuition rate. Known on campus as Upper School, we extend experiential exploration to an intellectually rich program utilizing adolescents' need for social collaboration, choice and voice, hands-on engagement and inquiry into the world around them. Middle School classrooms are characterized by joyful debate and dialogue, mutual trust and respect between teachers and students, and active engagement in a middle school program that celebrates adolescence. AS ADOLESCENTS WORK TO FIND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD, THEY BENEFIT FROM A COMMUNITY WHERE THEY ARE KNOWN AND SUPPORTED. A Typical Day A visitor to any grade level in the Middle School program might see students collaborating over analysis of a historical document or engaging in dialogue around a novel, deliberating possible methods for solving an equation, working closely with a teacher one-on-one during free time, reading in small groups, or hanging out in the net below the treehouse with new and old friends. Although the specifics of the schedule varies for each grade level, the mornings and directly after lunch are reserved for more traditional subjects and project work in grade level classes. In the afternoons, students can choose to go to any of the specialist studios for Activities , finish homework, seek support from teachers and peers, dive into projects, or connect with friends. Twice per week students have “flex” time with their grade level Head Teacher and their classmates. During this time, classes might hold community meetings, take field trips, engage in community service, and work on grade level projects directed by one of the Middle School Teachers. At the end of each day, students each fulfill their work jobs around the school wrapping up the day and helping ready the classrooms and grounds for the following day. As adolescents work to find their place in the world, they benefit from a community where they are known and supported. In Middle School, we extend the play-based experiential exploration to an intellectually rigorous program utilizing adolescents' need for social collaboration, hands-on engagement and inquiry into the world around them. Middle School classrooms are characterized by joyful debate and dialogue, mutual trust and respect between teachers and students, and active engagement in a rigorous program that celebrates adolescence. As students move through their school days in the Middle School, they are engaged in interdisciplinary inquiry and student-led projects as well as more traditional, teacher directed lessons. Daily academic work includes the expected middle school subjects of Humanities, Math, Science, and Spanish as well as Art, Ceramics, Physical Education and “Choice” elective courses taught through interdisciplinary inquiry and exploration. Learn more about our Middle School Program below: Choice Program Humanities Math Science Spanish Camping Program Social & Environmental Justice Homework After School Sports & Activities Choice Program The Choice Program is offered four times a year, with two 8-day and two 12-day sessions, during which children spend about 45 minutes a day focusing on a special topic they have selected from a menu of options designed by the Middle School teachers, Specialist teachers, and Peninsula Staff. Choice topics are wide ranging and may focus on history, writing, sciences, sports, handcrafts, or any of the arts. Recent Choice classes include: the World and History of Tea, Making Various Types of Dough, Film Critique, Songwriting, Backpacking, and Learning Basic Computer Assisted Design. Since Choice classes are based on student interest rather than on grade, the mix of students in any Choice class is multi-age. These multi-age classes enable students to experience learning in a variety of social situations, explore unusual topics, and connect with teachers and students they might not see everyday. Choice classes are an opportunity for students to dive into niche topics with teachers who are also passionate about those topics. Humanities Across Middle School, students engage in questions central to the study of the Human Condition. Who am I? Who are we? How did we get here? What is my role in the story of humanity? At the core, our humanities program explores what it means to be human, throughout history, today, and into the future. In 6th grade's study of ancient civilizations, students read A Single Shard , by Linda Sue Park, a novel about a young boy in ancient Korea. In 7th grade's unit on race in American History, students are exploring how artists in the Harlem Renaissance forged new identities through their art. After engaging with primary sources, they write a short response on their Chromebooks. As students consider this question, they will also build towards an arts integrated project, where they are tasked with communicating an answer to the larger unit question on race in the United States. As part of a study of Genocide and the Holocaust, 8th grade students design, create, and install an art exhibit memorializing Holocaust victims and honoring individual children during their time in the Terezin Ghetto. Math During math, students work on grade-level math tasks that encourage mathematical questioning, problem-solving, and reasoning. Curricula include the middle school material of the Common Core and emphasize problem-solving, collaboration and growth mindset. Student work includes grade-level textbook work as well as class and individual projects such as miniature city building to study geometry or creating a restaurant to practice decimals and percents. Students often work in pairs or small groups requiring colla Site Map - Peninsula School | Serving PK-8 in Menlo Park, CA Skip To Main Content Close Menu Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search About Us Mission & Strategic Plan Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging Quick Facts Calendar Calendar clone Our Staff Board of Directors Publications Contact Join our Team Program Program Overview Preschool Lower School (K-4th) Middle School (5th-8th) Specialist Program Portrait of a Graduate Admissions Welcome to Admissions! Students often work in pairs or small groups requiring colla Giving Methods - Peninsula School | Serving PK-8 in Menlo Park, CA Skip To Main Content Close Menu Search search-form#clearSearch'> Clear Search About Us Mission & Strategic Plan Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging Quick Facts Calendar Calendar clone Our Staff Board of Directors Publications Contact Join our Team Program Program Overview Preschool Lower School (K-4th) Middle School (5th-8th) Specialist Program Portrait of a Graduate Admissions Welcome to Admissions! The Activities Program at Peninsula School exemplifies progressive education by offering students time daily to engage in diverse activities based on their interests and choices. Starting from kindergarten, children can select from various options including Art, Science, Clay, Woodshop, Library, Weaving, PE, and Music. By having choice, the children gain a sense of how to meet their personal needs on a given day. Kids select for the following: running, playing, and healthy competition; undirected, hands-on, open expression of creativity; exploration and discovery; committing to lengthy and complicated projects; listening to stories and quiet time; deeper learning through games and play. The broad range of activities fosters enthusiastic participation, an opportunity to develop bonded relationships with peers across grade levels and specialist teachers, and an understanding that exploring new things, and making mistakes is integral in the cultivation of skills and passion. Limited space teaches Lower School students flexibility and resiliency, while Middle School students have the freedom to choose any activity and undertake personal projects. During Activities Classroom Integration During Activities Unlike traditional curricula, there are no predefined outcomes during activities; instead, students are provided time and space to take ownership of their interests and practice self-directed learning. This nudges each student to determine how they wish to spend their time and to negotiate with multi-aged peers on how to collaborate on an idea or project, choose a book, game or song, and take turns with equipment or leadership effectively. Specialist teachers provide quality materials and in-depth knowledge that challenges the individual student to expand their skill set and build their confidence and capacity. Creative problem-solving and experimentation are equally as important as the products of the learning process because students practice how to bring ambitious innovative ideas to fruition. Classroom Integration At Peninsula School, the collaboration between specialist teachers and classroom teachers is foundational to our approach of progressive education. Students receive regular instruction from specialist teachers which promote the development of multifaceted interests in students, engage their brains through tactile, kinesthetic, visual learning and overtime creates trust between students and specialists because they see the same teacher year after year. Throughout the week, the entire class visits the specialists in their studios and prepares for 30 minutes or an hour long lesson, book, project, game, or experiment. The length and frequency of the class varies from Preschoolers to 8th graders. Between K-1 and 6th grade, the students of each class begin building their repertoire of skills and deepen their understanding of materials by getting to do hands-on projects in - Art, Science, Woodshop, and Clay: Over the course of their time at Peninsula, these specialists will regularly introduce new lessons while also interspersing early projects back into the schedule. A spiraling curriculum helps students remember and engage in foundational skills while challenging them with increased complexity, responsibility, and quality of instruments and materials. - PE, Music, and later (rock) Band: While the students engage in a class-wide and cross-campus game or music-making, students also spend a substantial amount of time working on social dynamics. Cultivating relationships, problem-solving, and flexibility results from playing, getting into conflicts, negotiating and recognizing the importance of balancing personal voice and the wellbeing of the class as a whole. - Library teaches literacy and critical thinking through socratic styled discussions after read-alouds that helps them notice age appropriate themes, understand alternative perspectives, and examine language. Students have the opportunity to check out books, have quiet reading time, listen to read-alouds and discuss and critique with friends. - Art, Library, Science and Clay play an important role outside of their weekly scheduled class times. Specialists seamlessly integrate into the broader classroom curriculum by providing historical art lessons and lectures, teaching books that thematically align with new ideas, and going on field trips to museums, zoos and parks to study animals, plants, to create a relationship with the natural world. In essence, the value of having specialist teachers instruct and collaborate with classroom teachers at Peninsula School lies in the richness and depth it brings to each child's education. This approach not only broadens their academic knowledge but also nurtures a range of essential life skills—from creativity and critical thinking to resilience and social responsibility. It’s an education that prepares students not just for the next grade, but for life. Read more about each studio below Weaving Lower School Music Woodshop Science Clay Art Library Middle School Music Physical Education Weaving In the Weaving Room, Alexandra, affectionately known as "Lasagna," teaches that every knot of tangled yarn is a puzzle, not a problem. We value the unique qualities and interests of each child, and we are eager to learn what excites, delights, and challenges them. As an admissions team, the most important question we explore is how the Peninsula School student experience and our progressive educational program can help your child to thrive. Your family will thrive here. We also understand that engaged families are essential to a successful school experience. We seek to cultivate a community of families who are supportive of our mission, vision and values , including our commitment to equity and belonging , are eager to partner with teachers, and who share our commitment to the growth of the whole child: socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Your child and family will be part of a thriving community. Peninsula School is a community where everyone is learning and growing. In our admissions process we consider how each child and family will contribute to the richness and culture of our school, both in the classroom and in our broader commitment to raise competent, thoughtful and contributing members of society. We value diverse backgrounds, experiences and interests, and the unique ways in which these interact to create a dynamic school community. Finally, we consider the composition of each class , and seek to cultivate diverse, well-rounded and balanced cohorts in our preschool through 8th grade classrooms. To do so we consider age, gender, academic and social development, and group dynamics, in addition to many other nuanced factors. Peninsula School is exactly what we were looking for. We are thrilled and beyond grateful to be part of such a wonderful, loving community. They wanted it to be a positive, meaningful experience with a solid connection to our school’s core values. Our program aims to strengthen children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development through play and connections. As a group of educators, we care deeply about student choice and responsibility in making those choices, as well as voice, freedom, play, independence, and self-advocacy. We celebrate multiple perspectives, democratic participation, and collaboration. That said, we also provide comfortable areas for quiet reading or reflecting when that is needed. Our program is like a safe neighborhood street; kids of all ages play together, build forts, climb trees, play ball, read, play board games, and negotiate disagreements with each other under the gentle eye of their teachers. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we have exceptional participation rates! AGC donations typically contribute 5-6% to our operating budget annually depending on the year. Unrestricted gifts can be targeted towards the most pressing and critical needs at the school during any given time. If you are interested in designating your bequest towards a specific purpose, please contact the Development Office in order to ensure that we will be able use your gift as specified. RAISE YOUR PADDLE Raise Your Paddle (RYP) is an annual fundraising effort for a specific restricted Peninsula cause. This initiative usually takes place in the spring and is associated with our Community Party, formerly the auction. In the past, this fund has helped to raise dollars for tuition assistance, staff wellness, and various building and grounds projects. 8TH GRADE COMMEMORATIVE FUND The Eighth Grade Commemorative Fund is an endowed fund created exclusively for families of graduating eighth graders to honor their child’s Peninsula journey. The goal of the fund is at the heart of Peninsula’s values - supporting the School’s commitment to affordability and accessibility for both students and teachers. Affordability Keeping Peninsula School financially affordable for: - Families by offering financial support for tuition and other school-related expenses - Our staff by maintaining competitive and livable compensation and benefits Accessibility Continuing to honor all of the differences that enrich our community through support for initiatives to make the school culturally accessible, supportive and welcoming to families and staff If you have questions or would like to contribute, contact our Development Director at [email protected] . PENINSULA SCHOOL ENDOWMENT & TRUST FUND The Peninsula School Endowment and Trust Fund (PSE&TF) was established in 1970 by forward-thinking Peninsula parents to provide a permanent trust fund which will grow over the years and in time furnish a broad financial base for the support of Peninsula School. Over 50 years later, with a current endowment of over $1 million, every year the PSE&TF draws make a substantial annual contribution to support the operations of the school. Current parents can contribute to this fund annually by marking the designated box on each year’s enrollment agreements. We develop intellectual work for children to be creative and critical thinkers, to reason and problem solve, to be thoughtful communicators, and collaborators. In our classrooms, we create a community where students are known and supported, help children to be upstanders for social justice and our world, and prepare children to thrive in the upper school and beyond. As Lower School students move through their school days, they are engaged in inquiry projects, teacher-directed lessons, and choice-based learning. Learn more below: Social Emotional Learning & Democracy Critical Thinking Through Literacy Writing & Analysis Mathematics Science Social Justice & DEIB Social Emotional Learning & Democracy Nurturing Thriving Learners: Social Emotional Learning & Democracy Our program nurtures thriving learners by promoting social-emotional learning within a democratic community. Our work is anchored in research on social-emotional learning, which identifies how emotional intelligence correlates with academic success, as well as supports the well being of our children. Our work is also informed by research on social thinking, responsive classrooms, conflict resolution, and restorative justice. We focus on growth mindset & persistence. We grow children’s independence and interdependence by building self awareness, self regulation, and relationships skills. Our practice develops children's empathy and supports children to be active members in a diverse, democratic community. Critical Thinking Through Literacy Developing Critical Thinkers Through Literacy We develop literacy as a habit of life where everyone is a lifelong writer and reader. Most importantly, our literacy program develops children as critical thinkers. Our work is anchored in research on the science of reading, National Council for Teachers of English, and essential learnings from the common core state standards. We grow foundational skills and knowledge of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We build each student’s voice, while fostering empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives through texts that provide “mirrors” that reflect self and “windows” into others’ experiences. If you look across our classes, you’ll see children deeply engaged in learning to read and reading to learn. We build a coherent progression for our students as they go from class to class. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are taught with a multi-sensory approach in order to meet the various learning needs of all students. As they start their literacy journey in Lower School, children may be writing out their alphabet and sounding out letters in decodable texts. By 4th grade they engage in analysis and cross-text class discussions comparing texts. Writing & Analysis Writing & Analysis Throughout their Lower School experience, students practice writing and gain confidence to view themselves as writers and develop their voices. Writing instruction is taught through a workshop model, focusing on the process of writing. This approach offers children opportunities to brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, publish, and celebrate their fiction and nonfiction writing craft. Students are explicitly taught foundational writing conventions and morphology to develop their understanding of language and vocabulary. We develop critical thinkers, questioners, and active learners who look for multiple perspectives; and organize, synthesize, and critique information. Accompanying literacy is the importance of writing. Children learn to analyze other author’s writing, develop writing strategies in different genres, and participate in giving and receiving feedback to inform revisions. We uplift and amplify children’s authentic voices, ideas, choices, in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Mathematics Growing Problem Solvers: Mathematics We firmly believe that everyone can think mathematically and feel successful at math. There is extensive research to show that all students can learn math and that there isn’t a “math brain”. Not knowing how to solve a problem at the outset is expected! By engaging in productive struggle with the support of and collaboration with peers and teachers, students develop strong habits of mind, such as perseverance and flexible thinking, instead of simply seeking the correct solution. Examining and learning from mistakes is an essential part of being a successful math student. At Peninsula, students understand math, do math, and use math. To develop deep conceptual understanding, children engage in rich, inquiry-based tasks that support collaboration, challenge, and flexible approaches to problem solving. Hands-on materials and real world experiences ground abstract mathematical concepts. "Math talks" center student thinking and engagement. Routines, puzzles, and games build number sense and fluency. Throughout Lower School, students follow a progression of mathematical reasoning: counting leads to addition and subtraction, which progresses into multiplication and division before beginning on fractions and decimals. Algebraic and spatial reasoning as well as data science are found at each level of the program in developmentally appropriate ways. We have been graduating students for the last 100 years, and are honored to have such a varied, interesting and rich community of alumni. Whether one was a student in the 1930s or the 2020s, Peninsula School is a home away from home. We would like to help Peninsula classmates stay in touch with each other and the school. In an effort to help this connection, we have our alumni newsletter, The Big Puddle Post , which includes alumni updates; we support special reunions for the 10th, 25th and 50th (but are happy to help with any other reunions that arise); and we have a Facebook group. We want to make sure to invite alumni to these special events and to the annual Spring Fair. As one alumna recently said, "Neither friendship nor learning end at 8th-grade graduation," and neither should your connection to Peninsula and this wonderful community! Through play-based activities, social interaction, and creative projects, we cultivate a love of learning and nurture the development of critical social skills. This includes collaboration, communication, and emotional regulation. We empower young voices by using everyday situations to spark discussions about fairness and injustice. We foster a culturally sensitive anti-bias environment where all students feel like they belong, celebrating the richness of cultural backgrounds and integrating those identities into the daily life of the classroom. Positive Conflict Resolution In our classrooms, disagreements are stepping stones to learning, fueled by the spirit of loving kindness. To support this commitment, the school allocates 14% of tuition dollars and an additional 3% from fundraising for flexible tuition to families who would not otherwise be able to attend. Approximately 25% of our families participate in our Flexible Tuition program. A number of factors are taken into consideration in the allocation of flexible tuition, including family income and assets, family size and basic living expenses, total tuition and childcare costs, any extraordinary expenses as well as the local cost of living. Flexible tuition decisions are also informed by available school financial resources and the number of qualified applicants. Please note that priority consideration is given to families who submit all materials according to the deadlines. For further information please speak with Beth Lee , our Director of Finance and Operations . We are happy to provide technical assistance upon request. Flexible Tuition Information Peninsula School partners with a Flexible Tuition application platform, Clarity . The goal is to make the school’s Flexible Tuition application process as inclusive and as easy as possible for our families. The Flexible Tuition application typically opens in early December and applications are due by mid-January . Exact dates will be posted in the Fall, so please check back. Applications for the 2026-2027 Flexible Tuition Program are available through the “Clarity” platform and are due Thursday, January 15th . Clarity offers a user-friendly application process that is also available in Spanish. It is mobile-friendly, so you can complete your application on your phone or tablet and it can take as few as twenty minutes to complete. Furthermore, your Tax Return will be automatically transferred from the IRS when you complete the verification step. You will need to upload your most current paycheck stubs and W2s. Included here are application instructions in English and Spanish as well as FAQs . Is my financial information confidential? Do we need to apply each year for Flexible Tuition program? What if parents/guardians are separated or divorced? Will applying for flexible tuition affect my child’s application for admissions? No. Our admission and flexible tuition processes are separate, and decisions regarding flexible tuition are not considered until after a child has been accepted. Peninsula School does not use flexible tuition requests in assessing a student’s eligibility for admission. Is my financial information confidential? Yes. Peninsula School does not publicly identify participants in our flexible tuition program. Our Flexible Tuition committee treats applications for and commitments to flexible tuition as strictly confidential. Do we need to apply each year for Flexible Tuition program? Yes. Because financial circumstances change, families must apply each year for the flexible tuition program. Peninsula strives to provide flexible tuition as long as the family continues to qualify and the student is enrolled. What if parents/guardians are separated or divorced? Peninsula School considers all relevant family resources when making decisions about flexible tuition. Peninsula School 920 PENINSULA WAY Menlo Park CA 94025 USA (650) 325-1584 (650) 325-1313 Facebook (opens in new

A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled https://www.peninsulaschool.org/?utm_source=GBP&utm_medium=GBP&utm_campaign=GBP, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the
of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶ What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
