The organization was founded in 1996, when Liisa Nenonen, an operating room nurse, was looking for environmentally sound solutions for the wise reuse of healthcare resources. Thanks to the support of the San Francisco Solid Waste Management Program and Alameda County Recycling Board, ReCARES began its operations to collect used durable medical equipment, assistive devices, and surplus home care supplies donated by families, hospitals, and assisted living facilities and to then distribute them to people in need. Nowadays, ReCARES serves a diverse population. Many of the people who benefit from our service are people with disabilities, caregivers, or senior adults who come to find the equipment and supplies to live safely and comfortably in their homes. ReCARES helps an important number of individuals who also belong to the African-American, Asian-American, Latinx, and multiple immigrant communities of the East Bay Area. With its current distribution sites in Oakland, San Francisco, and Marin County, ReCARES serves over 3,000 people a year and distributes more than 6,000 items ranging from wheelchairs to adult incontinence supplies and personal care items. Since its foundation in 1996 up to date, ReCARES has consolidated as an essential community resource that provides safety and dignity for vulnerable elders, supports the independent living of individuals with disabilities, and eases the stress of families that face the age and health challenges of a beloved one. Mission We aim to decrease environmental waste and increase access to medical equipment and supplies in the community. Values Respect For the environment and the world that we inhabit. For the people, especially those navigating health issues and their caregivers. Inspiration We encourage others to reduce their environmental impact by inviting them to donate the DME and supplies that no longer serve them. We help others to give and receive without looking at social markers such as SES, race, ethnicity, legal status, etc. Service We offer compassionate assistance to everyone who comes to ReCARES. How do we do it Every week volunteers at our three Bay Area sites accept no-longer-needed durable medical equipment and supplies and pass them on to local individuals who might have difficulty affording such items. The walkers, wheelchairs, adult diapers, medical supplies, and many other items we provide free of charge, help individuals and families with their healthcare, mobility, and safety needs while preventing much waste from going to landfills. Its mission is to increase access to medical equipment and supplies while decreasing environmental waste. For 30 years, ReCARES Network volunteers have enhanced the quality of life and improved the independence of Bay Area residents by collecting no-longer-needed durable medical equipment and home health care supplies and redistributing those to underserved community members across three Bay Area counties: Marin, Alameda, and San Francisco. Every week, the walkers, wheelchairs, adult diapers, medical supplies, and other items are collected and made available free of charge to local seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals who might have difficulty affording such items. In 2023, we served 8,800 recipients and diverted 28,000 items of medical equipment and supplies from landfills. Position Summary The Oakland ReCARES location is the largest and busiest collection and redistribution site. The site manager position is responsible for safe and efficient program operations–including space and inventory management, volunteer coordination, and managing the movement of patrons and vehicles through the site during weekly service hours. The manager maintains positive relationships with our landlord and other neighboring tenants at our 2619 Broadway location. This is an independent contractor position with responsibilities that require approximately 10-15 hours each week to complete. Starting compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will range from $20-22 per hour. Most responsibilities will be completed at the Oakland site preparing for and overseeing provision of services to the public on Fridays, with flexible scheduling and remote completion for other tasks via phone and computer. Desired Qualifications Some combination of leadership, supervisory, and space management experience is preferred; a bachelor’s degree is desired. 1-2 years of customer service experience with the general public, or in the healthcare community, or with teams of volunteers. Should have the ability to balance the setting of boundaries, while gracefully managing potential conflict. Strong oral communication. Experience engaging respectfully and competently with others from differing racial, generational, cultural, and economic backgrounds, including marginalized people. Bilingual (Spanish or Cantonese) is a bonus. Mechanical aptitude or willingness and ability to learn how to assess or perform minor and quick repairs to commonly donated healthcare equipment. Familiarity with: Gmail, Google Docs/Sheets/Forms, Google Meets, Google Calendar, Google Voice, and social media (Facebook, Instagram) desirable. Physical Demands The job involves standing, walking, lifting and working with and around a variety of equipment, parts, and inventory of medical equipment and supplies. Must possess maneuverability to work in a small warehouse-style storage setting with strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium physical work. Must have adequate vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard. Positions in this classification require bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching to perform work. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Core Responsibilities: Propose yearly site performance goals and objectives. Manage allocation of program resources. Lead activities—including weekly set-up, breakdown, and service to patrons. Problemsolve as needed. Coordinate and supervise volunteer orientation, scheduling, and participation. Provide regular feedback on needs for additional support and direction. Ensure ongoing opportunities for meaningful volunteer experiences. Manage workflow–receiving, handling, storing, and give-away–of medical equipment and supplies. Maintain site organization, cleanliness, and operational efficiency. Coordinate receipt and distribution of large/bulk donations in a manner that maintains partner relationships consistently with the mission. Serve as ReCARES’ primary spokesperson to constituents and the public during program open hours. Collaborate with the Program Director to maintain the program’s visibility and positive reputation in the community. Receive and deposit weekly donations, including checks and cash. Maintain regular, responsive communication with administrative staff in support of accurate responses to email, social media, and telephone inquiries regarding equipment and supplies availability. Other duties as assigned by the Program Director. We operate out of small spaces with limited storage capacity and so we prioritize those donations that we are confident we can quickly find a home for. For these and other reasons, we do not accept certain kinds of donations and we are not a great option for finding certain kinds of items. To address these shortcomings, we have compiled some other resources below that may be of service. Donate and/or receive Assistive Technology (including electric wheelchairs and scooters) The Center for Independent Living NorCAL Spinal Cord Injury Foundation Assistive Technology (including equipment specifically for children) Able Closet Cancer (including literature, wigs, soft hats, scarves, and breast prostheses) Bay Area Cancer Connections CPAP (including CPAP and BiPAP machines and supplies) Breathe California of the Bay Area, Golden Gate, and Central Coast Diabetes (including syringes, insulin, insulin pens, test strips, lancets, devices, insulin pumps, and pump supplies) Diabetics Pay it Forward (Facebook group but there is also an email link on the page) Insulin For Life Larger Medical Equipment (including hospital beds, lifts, trapezes, and reclining chairs) ReCARES Large DME Referral System Miscellaneous (including various medical equipment and supplies) VIDA Ostomy (including pouching systems, rings, strips, belts, powder, barrier films, stoma measuring templates, and drainage bags) Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Tube Feeding (including feeding tube supplies) TubieLoved Support & Supplies Exchange Group (Facebook group) Local communities There may be someone in your local community who needs what you have! Try posting your items on some of the following exchange sites: Nextdoor BuyNothing Facebook Marketplace Animal shelters / veterinarian hospitals Due to insurance policies and other factors, many human-centered clinics and facilities cannot use donated medical supplies, even if they are unopened and unused. The same does not always hold true when it comes to animal-centered clinics and facilities. There are tons of animal shelters and veterinarian hospitals all over the Bay Area. Find the nearest shelter or veterinarian hospital and call to ask whether they can use what you have. Please bring them over if you are looking to donate! Boots and braces of any kind Knee scooters How much does it cost? Everything we receive is donated to us, and everything is freely distributed in turn. We ask that you do not attempt to sell or profit from the items we distribute. Do I need insurance or ID? We don’t ask for insurance or ID, but we do ask you to sign a liability waiver upon receiving an item. Everyone is welcome to our services. Can I make an appointment or reserve an item? We do not take appointments and we cannot reserve items. Everything is distributed on a first come, first serve basis. We receive donations throughout the day, every Friday; therefore, there is just as good a chance of finding what you need at the end of the day as there is at the beginning. How do I find out if you have what I need? Our inventory constantly changes, and we have limited availability to return calls. Even if we have an item when you call, we cannot guarantee that we will still have it when you arrive. Therefore, it is best to ask what is available onsite. Incidentally, our services are best suited to local communities. Can I have something picked up or delivered? We cannot pick up or deliver, but you can send someone on your behalf to pick up an item or deliver a donation. Can I drop something off outside your open hours? Each site only has open hours one day a week. We can only accept donations during our open hours. Leaving anything at any other time is considered dumping. Dumping at our site jeopardizes our lease and negatively impacts our operation. If you cannot bring your donation in during the appropriate times, please find another outlet or dispose of it properly. Can I pick up or donate a larger item, like a hospital bed or patient lift? Donate/Receive Larger Medical Equipment How do I know if you’ll be open this week? We will give notice of any site closures here as well as on our social media accounts ( @recaresoakland ). In general, we only close around major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. A gift from the Global Data Registry

When the Global Data Registry crawled http://www.recares.org/, we found no structured data — the language AI systems use to understand and describe a business online.

Schema is how ChatGPT, Google, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity know what your business does and how to describe you accurately to your customers. Without it, AI systems are guessing.

The most important field in this block is sameAs — a verified edge connecting your website to your permanent record at the Global Data Registry. This is a free, confirmed link to a real verified source. It costs nothing and gives your website a confirmed node in the graph that AI systems traverse when building answers about your business.

Copy the block below and paste it into the <head> of your website. Or drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and ask it to extend it with your full business details — that is the fastest path to a complete schema record.

▶   What is schema?

Schema is a standard vocabulary maintained at schema.org that lets websites describe themselves in a language machines can read. When you add schema to your website, you are telling AI systems, search engines, and knowledge graphs exactly what your business is and how it connects to the rest of the web.
